WELCOME
WELCOME BACK
2022 - 2023 Orchestral Series Our second season since our transformation sees a diverse programme that features old favourites, major celebrations, and some surprises too. With worldwide celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of the birth of Sergei Rachmaninov in 2023, it’s understandable that his work features heavily in our season, with City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and The Hallé all presenting expertly chosen pieces by the composer, as do the visiting Estonian National Symphony Orchestra. The Estonians will be joined by pianist Freddy Kempf, who we welcome back after his breath-taking and thoroughly entertaining solo recital last season. But the season isn’t just about émigré Rachmaninov, who settled in the US after the 1917 Revolution, as you can also hear wonderful works from Thomas Adès, John Adams, Gerald Finzi, Arvo Pärt, Chineke! favourite Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, and Swede Bo Linde, while our rescheduled Maxim Vengerov Gala Concert - with one of the greatest violinists of all time will undoubtedly be a night to remember. Led by Principal Conductor Nicholas Collon, Aurora is the first orchestra in the world to present whole symphonies entirely from memory. The resulting electrifying performances have become the groups signature, and one of the most talked-about innovations in classical music over the past decade. Aurora present three pieces with a distinctly French flavour. Beginning with Three Studies..., Thomas Adès pays homage to the work of composer François Couperin, skilfully representing his harpsichord music in a rich orchestral setting. Following Maurice Ravel’s entertaining Piano Concerto in G, Aurora conclude with Berlioz’s dramatic Symphonie Fantastique, exploring episodes from the life of an artist.

<< SIR MARK ELDER
The Hallé “… no British orchestra can match the Hallé under Mark Elder. This is what peak performance sounds like, and it takes decades to achieve. Savour it while you can.” (The Spectator) Now in his penultimate season as Hallé Music Director, Sir Mark Elder’s visit is clearly not to be missed! Laden with the composer’s characteristic ardent, late-Romantic lyricism, Rachmaninov’s Third Piano Concerto is famed for being fiendishly virtuosic. Performed here by the London-based Siberian pianist, Pavel Kolesnikov, an artist praised for his daring originality. Shostakovich’s best-known symphony, his Fifth, is an emotional rollercoaster penned under the threat of communist suppression. The work re-established the composer’s reputation and its 1937 premiere was reportedly met with a 30-minute standing ovation. As the current world situation reflects equally turbulent events, this will certainly be a timely and relevant performance.

OLIVER JANES
CBSO returns for an evening rich in melody, lyricism, humour and with just a touch of melancholy. John Adams describes his The Chairman Dances as an ‘out-take’ from his opera Nixon In China. With its swooping, themes and heart-on-sleeve sentimentality, it’s unashamedly funny, but shot through with an unmistakable sadness too. British choral composer, Gerald Finzi’s Clarinet Concerto, his best-known work, will quickly dispel any gloom, however. There’s a searing intensity to its opening that will doubtlessly showcase the skills of soloist, CBSO clarinettist Oliver Janes. The evening closes with Rachmaninov’s Symphonic Dances, his final completed work and one that many view as his best. This is a work so rich in colour, melody, and effortless lyricism, that it’s hard to believe he had all but given up on composing a few years earlier. The award-winning conductor Ryan Bancroft takes to the podium, ensuring a night to remember.

Widely acknowledged as the one of the world’s greatest living string players, violinist Maxim Vengerov has spent 40 years performing on stage. First making headlines as a child prodigy, he studied with Galina Tourchaninova and Zakhar Bron, becoming a solo violinist at the age of five and making his first recording at the age of 10. Since then, he has gone on to win Grammy and Gramophone artist of the year awards, and was recently appointed Classic FM’s first ever solo Artist in Residence. Vengerov shall be teaming up with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra – Malta’s oldest and largest professional ensemble – for a programme featuring Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No.1, written during the 1917 Revolution, alongside Rachmaninov’s triumphant return to symphonic composition, and Ukraine-born contemporary composer Alexey Shor’s tonal and romantic work, Seascapes – a sublime piece in four movements for violin and orchestra. At the helm is the MPO’s celebrated Principal Conductor, Sergey Smbatyan. The concert is organised together with the European Foundation for Support of Culture.

BEETHOVEN
After two exciting (and packed) performances for our 20212022 Orchestral Series, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra returns to focus on three of the greatest composers of all time. Joseph Haydn’s L’isola disabitata was his tenth opera, best remembered for a surging ‘Sturm und Drang’ G minor overture which is almost a mini-symphony in itself. Composed in his final year, during a period of remarkable productivity that also produced The Magic Flute, Mozart’s ever-popular 1791 Clarinet Concerto was the master’s last major instrumental composition. It’s widely considered one of the greatest compositions written for woodwind. Beethoven’s Symphony No.3 is seen by many as a bridge between the Classical period (as epitomised by Haydn and Mozart) and the Romantic era. Challenging the symphonic form, Beethoven’s Eroica symphony also marked the beginning of his experimental middle period.

Founded in 1912 in the Swedish city Gävle, the Swedish Philharmonia (aka Gävle Symphony Orchestra) has been led by Principal Conductor Jaime Martín since 2013. For its Warwick Arts Centre debut, the Swedish Philharmonia performs Jean Sibelius’ second symphony, Tchaikovsky’s only concerto for violin, and the joyful A Merry Overture. Written in 1954, it’s an all too rare chance to hear a piece by Gävle-born composer Bo Linde - and what better way to experience his work, than with an orchestra who arguably know him best? The soloist is rising star Serbian-French violinist Nemanja Radulović, whose captivating appearances with leading orchestras across the world have amassed him a legion of loyal fans.

Building on their awe-inspiring appearances with us in 2019 and 2022 Chineke! makes a much-welcomed return to the Butterworth Hall. Chineke! is Europe’s first professional orchestra comprising a majority of black and ethnically diverse musicians. Each of their programmes include works by composers of ethnically diverse backgrounds - with their latest concert featuring Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. Famously dubbed The Black Mahler, his light yet spirited Two Novelletten is actually inspired by German Robert Schumann’s piano miniatures, the eight Novelletten. Completing the programme are Gustav Holst’s St Paul’s Suite, which takes its name from the Hammersmith school where Holst taught; Vaughan Williams’ Oboe Concerto, a wartime piece penned after his Fifth Symphony; and Beethoven’s enchanting Fourth Symphony, with its noteworthy second movement. The soloist is Armand Djikoloum, the 20-something prize winner who has appeared with such leading orchestras as Hannover Staatsoper, Staatskapelle Dresden, Stavanger Symphony, Frankfurt Opera, and Oslo Opera House.

Warwick Arts Centre favourite Freddy Kempf returns to conclude our 2022-2023 season joined by the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, led by Olari Elts who began his tenure as ENSO’s Music Director and Chief Conductor in 2020. A varied programme includes Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2, which marked the composer’s triumphant return to form after struggling with his mental health. Surprisingly, his Symphony No.1, which debuted in 1897, initially received a poor reception, but now the symphony is now seen as ground-breaking. Around the performance nestles Estonian composer Pärt’s elegy to mark the passing of Britten, a much-admired British giant who had passed away the previous year, and Musgrave’s short 1990 piece honouring the 125th anniversary of Sibelius’ birth before Jean Sibelius’ own Symphony No. 5. With its familiar ‘swan-call’ motif, the fifth was commissioned from the composer by the Finnish Government to honour his own 50th birthday, in 1915.
