WELCOME

The Journey

Much of the thunder, this summer, will be stolen by Christopher Nolan’s recreation of Dunkirk and Sofia Coppola’s subversive remake of The Beguiled, but there is a bounty of smaller movies to brighten even the gloomiest of summer evenings. Diane Keaton and Brendan Gleason will put a smile on your face with the charming fairy tale Hampstead (based on a true story, of course), while Timothy Spall and Colm Meaney perform the least likely of double acts as Paisley and McGuinness on the start of the road to peace in Northern Ireland, earning them the nickname The Chuckle Brothers. Brian Cox plays Churchill in his darkest hour, Geoffrey Rush is Alberto Giaccometti in Final Portrait and England is Mine features Jack Lowden as a young Steven Patrick Morrissey, whose world has never been brimming over with sunshine but he seems to have made out all right. John Hurt passed away earlier this year and it seems a good time to highlight his range and talent as an actor in a selection of his finest films including The Naked Civil Servant, The Elephant Man, the alarmingly timely Nineteen Eighty-Four and the less well known, but haunting, The Hit. Performances of note include Sally Hawkins’ exceptional turn as artist Maud Lewis in Maudie, Woody Harrelson, a compelling bundle of frustration, misanthropy and beguiling innocence in Wilson and Richard Gere, who just gets better with age, excels as the Washington fixer, Norman. Isabelle Huppert is a European Song Contest runner up in Souvenir, while in Whitney: Can I Be Me, Nick Broomfield explores the highs and heartbreak of one of the great divas of all time. We will also be screening The Graduate to celebrate its 50th Anniversary; Ben (Hoffman) may still be paying off his student loan. The surprise pictures this season include A Man Called Ove, which lost out at the Oscars but delivers a heartwarming transformation of spirit, Scribe is the best Hitchcockian movie of the last decade and Ma Vie de Courgette is an extraordinary portrait of childhood alienation and recovery. With so much to discover, it is sure to distract you from the hail and the heatwaves.

A Quiet Passion 12A

Fri 21 – Mon 24 Jul Dir: Vincent Perez UK/France/Germany 2016 103mins Cast: Brendan Gleeson, Emma Thompson, Daniel Brühl

Sat 22 - Mon 24 Jul Dir: Terence Davies UK/Belgium 2016 125mins Cast: Cynthia Nixon, Jennifer Ehle

Berlin 1940. The city is paralysed by fear. Otto and Anna Quangel (Gleeson and Thompson) are a working class couple trying to stay out of trouble under Nazi rule until their only child is killed in the fighting at the front. Driven to act, they start to drop anonymous postcards all over the city attacking Hitler and his regime, knowing that if they are caught it would mean execution. When their campaign comes to the attention of Gestapo inspector Escherich (Brühl), a murderous game of cat-and-mouse begins.

Acclaimed director Terence Davies presents a beautiful biopic about the ground-breaking American poet, Emily Dickinson (Nixon). From her youth through to adulthood, the film demonstrates Dickinson’s wit, intelligence and deep family connection, but also how at odds she felt with society and religion, and how this translated into her poetry. As her life is touched by tragedy and her frustration grows at her lack of recognition, loneliness and reclusiveness begin to dominate Dickinson’s life. “CYNTHIA NIXON IS SIMPLY MAGNIFICENT” Rolling Stone
