WELCOME After the awards season feeding frenzy comes a chance to reflect on what else has been going on in the world. Two of the highly tipped foreign language candidates feature in this programme: Ruben Östlund’s mischievous satire on the art world, The Square, and Sebastián Lelio’s A Fantastic Woman, an illuminating and engaging study of transgender issues. Both feature in my top 10 best films of the last 12 months. We have a preponderance of exceptional women; Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird (compulsory viewing for any student or parent of an older teen), Clio Barnard’s challenging Dark River and Lynne Ramsay’s unsettling study in violence and righteousness, You Were Never Really Here. I, Tonya tells the amazing story of the world champion figure skater from the wrong side of the tracks, spurned by the public and destroyed by an absurd act of violence. Margot Robbie is commanding at the centre, but Allison Janney delivers one of the most memorable studies in embittered motherhood I have seen.

Journey’s End 12A Thu 1 Mar Dir: Saul Dibb UK 2017 108mins Cast: Sam Claflin, Paul Bettany, Asa Butterfield Saul Dibb’s adaptation of R.C. Sheriff’s 1928 play follows young new recruit, Lieutenant Raleigh (Butterfield), as he pulls strings to join his childhood hero, Captain Stanhope (Claflin), on the front line on the eve of the Spring Offensive. Stanhope, cracked by the war, is horrified to find Raleigh in the claustrophobia of the officer’s dugout. Held together by whiskey and his second-in-command, Osbourne (Bettany), Stanhope is sustained by one thought: that when the war is over he can return to his beloved, Raleigh’s sister Margaret. Journey’s End

In contrast, Agnès Jaoui revels at the centre of I Got Life!, a delicious comedy about getting on and a fitting counterpoint to Richard Loncraine’s Finding Your Feet, which explores the quest for love in later life with Imelda Staunton, Joanna Lumley and a host of British treasures. Elsewhere, James Corden animates Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbit and Jo Brand’s novel on mental health and recovery, The More You Ignore Me, is brought to the screen. Beatrix Potter and Jo Brand in the same sentence: I never thought that would happen! Then, there is a short Criminal World season of original international thrillers. If you have enjoyed the Scadi Noirs of recent years, then try The Nile Hilton Incident, murder in Cairo against the backdrop of the Egyptian revolution, Loveless, the search for a missing child in Russia by the acutely observant Andrey Zvyagintsev, and The Third Murder, a complicated tale of crime and punishment by Hirokazu Kore-eda, the most compelling of Japanese story tellers. Finally, mark your diary for Sun 29 Apr, when we have a day that celebrates a very British kind of rebellion, Pushing Boundaries: 1960s British Cinema and its Pioneering Stars, which offers you a chance to see three controversial classics on the big screen.

Set in the glamour of 1950s post war London, renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Day-Lewis) and his sister, Cyril (Manville), are at the centre of British fashion, dressing royalty, movie stars and socialites in their distinct style. Women come and go through Woodcock’s life, providing the bachelor with inspiration and companionship, until he comes across a young, strong-willed woman, Alma (Krieps). As she becomes a fixture in his life as his muse and lover, Woodcock finds his once controlled and planned life disrupted by love.

Guillermo del Toro returns with an other-worldly fable, set against the backdrop of the Cold War. Hoping it will give them an edge in the space race, government agency Occam capture an amphibious humanoid creature known as The Asset (Jones). The Post 12A

Wed 7 & Thu 8 Mar Dir: Jennifer Peedom Australia 2017 74mins Cast: Willem Dafoe (voice)

Fri 9 – Thu 15 Mar Dir: Greta Gerwig USA 2017 94mins Cast: Saoirse Ronan, Laurie Metcalf

Mon 12 – Thu 15 Mar Dir: Steven Spielberg UK 2017 116mins Cast: Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks

Scored by the Australian Chamber Orchestra and narrated by Willem Dafoe, director Jennifer Peedom’s Mountain is a dazzling exploration of our obsession with the peaks. Only three centuries ago, climbing a mountain would have been considered impossible. Why, then, are we now drawn to them in our millions? Mountain shows us the spellbinding force of high places and their ongoing power to shape our lives and our dreams.

Greta Gerwig’s semi autobiographical directorial debut follows precocious teenager Christine (Ronan), or ‘Lady Bird’, as she drifts through her final year at a strict Catholic school in Sacramento, California in 2002. Full of daydreams and aspirations for her future, she continually clashes with her mother, Marion (Metcalf), who is more preoccupied with practical concerns. Beautifully and sensitively realised, Lady Bird’s sensational performances and sophisticated writing create a personal and authentic coming-ofage story.

The Post examines the Washington Post’s legal battle to publish the leaked Pentagon Papers in 1971, which contained damning classified information about the Vietnam War and a cover-up that spanned three decades and four U.S. Presidents. Based on the incredible true story, The Washington Post’s Katherine Graham (Streep), the first female publisher of a major American newspaper, and editor Ben Bradlee (Hanks) risked their careers and their freedom to help bring long buried truths to light.

The Final Year 12A

Wed 14 Mar Tickets: £12.50 (£10) Dir: David Batty UK 2017 86mins Cast: Michael Caine, Roger Daltrey, Twiggy, Paul McCartney

Thu 15 Mar Dir: Greg Barker USA 2017 90mins Cast: Barack Obama, John Kerry, Samantha Power

British film icon Michael Caine narrates and stars in My Generation, the vivid and inspiring story of his personal journey through 1960s London. Based on personal accounts and stunning archive footage, the film has been painstakingly assembled over the last six years. Featuring The Beatles, Twiggy, David Bailey, Mary Quant, The Rolling Stones, David Hockney and more, it tells the story of the birth of pop culture in London.

This slick, fly-on-the-wall documentary tracks Barack Obama’s final year in office, focusing on his administration’s foreign policy and looking forward to his presidential legacy. With extraordinary access to key members of Obama’s cabinet, as well as the president himself, the film is fascinating, timely and, at times, “West Wing-esque” (The Guardian) in its fast-paced political patter.

This screening includes a Q&A with Michael Caine broadcast live.

Leaving his wife, Clare (Weisz), and children behind he set off in his untested trimaran to circumnavigate the globe. However, due to his inexperience and the intense loneliness of the high seas, his journey soon turned into a dramatic and disastrous struggle for survival.

Following her father’s (Bean) death, Alice (Wilson) returns home to Yorkshire for the first time in 15 years to claim ownership of the family farm, only to find it in complete disrepair. In her absence, her troubled older brother Joe (Stanley) has been struggling to look after their father and keep the farm from going under. This film centres around Nora (Leuenberger), a seemingly unremarkable housewife from a small Swiss village, who must learn to become a resolute suffragette leader in the face of adversity. In overcoming the mockery and bullying accompanied by taking a stand, Nora convinces the women of her village to go on strike for an equal voice.
