PROTO-TYPE THEATER

A Machine they’re Secretly Building Wed 27 Apr 7.45pm From what might be a news desk, an office, a bedroom, a bunker under a mountain or a theatre, two people speak up, speak out, blow the whistle and lift the veil on the insidious machine of surveillance.

MADE IN CHINA

Tonight I’m Gonna Be The New Me Tue 26 Apr 7.45pm A woman takes to the stage. A man watches from the wings. They both wonder if their love will survive what’s about to happen. Disarmingly honest and comically imagined, Tonight I’m Gonna Be The New Me is an arresting physical endurance act that crashes headfirst into an impossibly true love story, exposing how we perform ourselves and our relationships. Intimate and startlingly immediate, it defies you to watch, in spite of yourself. “SLIPPERY AND TEASING, MURDEROUSLY ENTERTAINING” ★★★★ The Guardian 1hr 5mins / Age 14+ Studio £13 (£11) Under 26s £10

A Machine they’re Secretly Building charts a course from the Top Secret secrets of WWI intelligence (via the moon, 1972’s Chess World Championships, a disco in Oklahoma and the cafeteria at CERN) through to 9/11, the erosion of privacy, Edward Snowden and to the terror of a future that might already be upon us. 1hr / Age £14+ Studio £13 (£11) Under 26s £10 A Machine they’re Secretly Building was commissioned by Lincoln Performing Arts Centre, triggered@warwick and hAb/Word of Warning (Manchester). Broken

Thu 26 May 7.45pm

Fri 17 Jun 7.30pm

When Victoria Melody competed in beauty pageants for her previous show, Major Tom, a hairdresser advised her that she needed hair extensions. Freaked out by wearing a piece of somebody else’s body, she set out on an extraordinary quest to find out exactly where this hair comes from.

After their hugely successful tour in spring Motionhouse returns once more with Broken. The adrenaline-filled spectacle erupts onto the stage: athletic contact work, spectacular acrobatics and a gripping narrative combine with revolutionary set design and digital imagery. Broken takes audiences on a journey into the earth as they have never seen it before…

Victoria’s boundless curiosity takes Hair Peace’s audience from the temples of India to the shopping malls of Russia, via hair salons and forensics labs on a humorous, moving and serendipitous journey around the world.

Parents Bob and Fran have worked their fingers to the bone and with their four children grown and ready to fly the nest it might be time to relax and enjoy the roses. But the changing seasons bring home some shattering truths.

Imagine being told to leave your home…

Featuring Frantic Assembly’s celebrated physicality, Things I Know To Be True is a complex and intense study of the mechanics of a family that is both poetic and brutally frank.

Well it all happened (most of it anyway) in Slapton Sands, Devon, in 1944.

King Lear

Wed 8 Jun 7pm

Wed 28 Sep 7pm

Wed 12 Oct 7pm

Simon Godwin (The Two Gentlemen of Verona 2014) directs Paapa Essiedu as Hamlet in Shakespeare’s searing tragedy. As relevant today as when it was written, Hamlet confronts each of us with the mirror of our own mortality in an imperfect world.

Cymbeline is a ruler of a divided Britain. When Innogen, the only living heir, marries her sweetheart in secret, an enraged Cymbeline banishes him. But a powerful figure behind the throne is plotting to seize power and murder them both. Innogen embarks on a dangerous journey that will reunite Cymbeline with a lost heir and reconcile the young lovers. Melly Still directs Shakespeare’s rarely performed romance.

King Lear has ruled for many years. As age begins to overtake him, he decides to divide his kingdom amongst his children, living out his days without the burden of power. Misjudging his children’s loyalty and finding himself alone in the wilderness, he is left to confront the mistakes of a life that has brought him to this point.

Bruckner wrote some of the most beautiful, most thrilling and most heartfelt music ever composed – and, under its veteran chief conductor Dennis Russell Davies, the orchestra of Bruckner’s own home town, Linz, plays his music with an unparalleled insight, authenticity and power. It’s not every day that we get to hear the Sixth Symphony – the work that even Bruckner considered his most original – and no-one who loves great music-making will want to miss it. That goes double when it’s paired with a rare chance to hear Melvyn Tan – one of the world’s greatest advocates of historically informed performance – playing a modern piano in Beethoven’s Fourth Concerto. “Thoughtful, elegant and refined” is how The Guardian described Tan’s playing; his Beethoven will come up as fresh as new paint. That’s the heart of an evening that begins on the plains of Hungary with Haydn’s zingy Rider quartet, and then follows Franz Schubert on one of the greatest emotional journeys in all chamber music: as he ventures alone into the dark valleys and echoing Alpine vistas of his tremendous G major String Quartet. Four musicians travel to three incredible places – and you’re invited along. Helen Martin Studio £19 (£17)

“Rarely, rarely, comest thou, Spirit of Delight!” Edward Elgar headed his Second Symphony with a quote from Shelley – but some say that you can see the line of the Malvern Hills in its sweeping opening theme. Edward Gardner is quickly emerging as one of our finest living interpreters of Elgar, so prepare to hear England’s greatest composer baring his very soul, amidst great surging waves of golden sound. The Ukrainian violinist Valeriy Sokolov, has yet to turn thirty – but this self-proclaimed “natural born fiddler” has already won global acclaim. His sound has been compared to “silk and steel”; so he could have been born to play Sibelius’s Nordic epic of a violin concerto. Finlandia, meanwhile, is more than just a brand of vodka: a neat shot of Sibelius at his most stirring will get the evening off to a truly intoxicating start! Mark Watson returns with the followup show to his highly celebrated and successful Flaws. A seemingly minor problem at an airport is the starting point for a spiralling examination of identity in the digital age and search for meaning in our lives – but with an enormous number of jokes (luckily) as well as Watson’s customary flailing, chaotic audience interactions and all sorts of other fun.

With Craig Campbell’s record Everest base camp show looming beyond his hip-reshaping operation and a winter of snowboarding comedy shows, the challenge of keeping the wounded Moose’s chin up ensures Don’t Look Down to be his most appropriately titled show yet!

Welcome to Sudley-on-Sea. Take a look around. You don’t have long. Seriously.

“BELLY LAUGH BRILLIANT…THE AUDIENCE WAS WEEPING WITH LAUGHTER” Time Out Age 14+ Theatre £18

“A FANTASTIC YARN WEAVER, WITH CHARMING TALES OF HIS TRAVELS AND HUGELY FUNNY OBSERVATIONS” Time Out Studio £16

Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Award winners and Melbourne Barry Award nominees Max and Ivan embark on their first UK tour to tell an epic narrative sketch comedy tale about the hopes, fears and dreams of a doomed town. “A THING OF STARTLING PRECISION, IMAGINATION AND CROWD-PLEASING CHARM. I COULD WATCH IT AGAIN TOMORROW.” ★★★★★ The Times Studio £13

Animal

Graeme of Thrones

Grumpy Old Women

Thu 2 Jun 7.30pm

Fri 3 Jun 8pm

Sara Pascoe is a human animal, and so are you.

In this critically-acclaimed theatrical journey through the Seven Kingdoms, direct from sold out shows in London’s West End and Australia, avid ‘Thrones’ fan Graeme just wants to recreate his favourite fantasy saga on stage – aided and abetted by his best friend Paul and the girl he used to fancy at school – Bryony.

Fifty Shades of Beige featuring Jenny Eclair, Susie Blake & Kate Robbins

This show is a mixture of completely true stories about Tony Blair, Oedipus Rex and the wildlife of Lewisham, plus a load of stories that don’t sound true at all about Jason Donovan, Henry the Hoover and when God took over the tannoy in Sainsbury’s. All animals evolved, but only humans evolved to the point of knowing they evolved. This troubling and confusing position is explored in a creative and honest way in a show about empathy and its limitations. “PASCOE’S LIVELY MIND TEASES OUT BIG QUESTIONS WITH INTELLIGENCE, SILLINESS AND SELF-DEPRECATION” The Guardian Age 15+ Theatre £13

40

Created by a team of some of the UK’s top comedy writers, Graeme Of Thrones is an original and un-authorised parody on the international phenomenon that is Game Of Thrones. A treat for fans and an introduction for the unenlightened. See it before the inevitable lawsuit.

TICKETS SELLING FAST Sat 11 Jun 8pm Returning after a critically acclaimed sell-out spring 2015 tour the Grumpies are back to knock some sense into the nation. Perrier Award-winning comedian, writer and original star of Grumpy Old Women Jenny Eclair will be joined by fellow recruits Susie Blake (Mrs Brown’s Boys, Coronation Street) and actress and singer Kate Robbins (Where The Heart, Casualty).

“A MUST FOR ANY GAME OF THRONES FAN” Time Out

Come and bask in an orgy of fury and big laughs in this glorious live version of the hit TV show.
