hello One of the key things I ask of a movie is for it to take me somewhere I have not been before. The current programme will offer several opportunities for the enquiring mind and the armchair traveller, journeys across the world and into the mind. Fernando Meirelles’ 360, which opened the London Film Festival last year, is a kaleidoscope of stories from around the world and Woody Allen continues his grand film making tour of the most alluring cities of Europe with To Rome with Love. Joe Wright evokes the latter days of Imperial Russia in the Tom Stoppard-scripted adaptation of Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina and Zhang Yimou salutes courage and sacrifice during the Japanese occupation of Nanking in The Flowers of War, with Christian Bale exchanging his batsuit for a priest’s cassock. Elsewhere, Andrea Riseborough and Clive Owen take us back to the dark days of the Troubles in the thriller Shadow Dancer, Toby Jones finds himself baffled and bewildered as a sound technician for an Italian horror movie in Berberian Sound Studio and Nina Hoss is a country doctor under scrutiny in the last days of East Germany in Barbara. Earlier still, John Hillcoat takes us to the ‘Prohibition’, via gangster tale Lawless, which garnered warm praise at Cannes in May. Untouchable is a fresh and frank comedy of a quadriplegic and his carer which has broken box office records across Europe and the USA. In Hope Springs, Meryl Streep continues her current campaign to prove that ‘You’re never too old’ with Tommy Lee Jones. My personal guilty pleasure of the moment, however, is Hysteria, best described by the quaint English adjective, ‘saucy’! Also, have a look at Bertrand Tavernier’s Death Watch, shamefully overlooked and now reissued after thirty years, it is amazingly prescient and humane science fiction featuring the wonderful Romy Schneider in one of her last roles.

Berberian Sound Studio

Berberian Sound Studio 15

An aural feast for film lovers, as a sound engineer gets more than he bargained for as he works on the sound effects for an Italian horror film. Toby Jones is Gilderoy, a mousy sound engineer who spends his days mutilating vegetables to create sound effects for the gory foreign film he has been requested to work on. But as his work gets weirder, it seems that the gore is not merely restricted to the screen. A Lynchian delight that is full of slow-building tension.

Sat 6 Oct 11am – 3.30pm £10 (£7) Film members £8.50 (£5.25)

Fri 5 – Wed 10 Oct Dir: John Hillcoat US 2012 115mins Cast: Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Guy Pearce, Shia LaBeouf, Jessica Chastain

From Blackmail to The Birds

Over the span of 50 years, Alfred Hitchcock created a body of work that defined the art of filmmaking. To watch his films is to understand the grammar of cinema. This illustrated talk will look at the director's early life and influences, before discussing how Hitchcock, above all others, was the exemplar when it came to employing film as a visual language, always keeping to his most famous motto: show, don't tell. From Blackmail to The Birds, this talk will use excerpts from Hitchcock's work to highlight his singular genius and the timelessness of his canon and will include the classic Hitchcock feature, Vertigo. This talk will be led by Ian Haydn Smith. A writer and journalist, Smith is the Editor of the International Film Guide and has previously led a Saturday Film Talk on the 1960s back in 2010. 08

Depression-era deep south of America is the setting for this violent tale of bootleggers under threat from the corrupt authorities who are intent on taking a cut of their profits. Shia LeBeouf and Tom Hardy play the Bondurant brothers, illegal bootleggers of alcohol who fall foul of the corrupt force, led by Special Agent Charlie Rakes (Pearce). To add to their woes, they also find themselves in competition with local gangster Floyd Banner (Oldman), who hopes to move in on their turf. When Forrest Bondurant is injured in a gunfight, it’s up to younger brother Jack to step up and protect their livelihood, and their lives. With a screenplay by Nick Cave and a cast that also features Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska, Hillcoat’s (The Proposition) rip-roaring gangster tale has all the makings of a classic.
