Its 1500 pages are full of cutting edge science, maids vomiting pebbles, priests defecating in ditches, lovers unrequited, friends who can’t be parted, plus enormous expansive long lists of every food, herb, location, activity or occupation that can bring on or cure melancholy in any one of its many forms. In their stage version Stan's Cafe transform this extraordinary book into a guided tour of melancholy and the mind of its author; in so doing they consider how this 17th century self-help manual reflects our own concerns and obsessions. “Stan’s Cafe has a genius way of explaining things and making the difficult simple” Lyn Gardner, The Guardian. With the audience plugged wirelessly into its beating heart, the performance is both a hypnotic dance towards the limits of pleasure and an unsettling voyeuristic tribute to our private desires. It is an escapist's wet dream which grapples sleepily along the way with the dizzying highs and terrifying boredoms of the early 21st century: the soporific hum of mass communication; the television’s warm embrace. After discovering that her dog had prize-winning potential at a charity dog show, Victoria seized upon the opportunity to gain access to that extraordinarily exclusive members only club: the show-dog owner's club. But Major Tom’s first show was a disaster, and feeling an overpowering sense of guilt about her dog being criticised, Victoria decided to put herself through the same process by becoming a beauty queen. Based on a true story, Major Tom and Victoria increasingly immerse themselves into the obsessive and confusing realm of personal scrutiny as they participate as genuine contestants and aim to win. As we follow the ups and downs of her New York experience – making friends, avoiding her evil landlady and unexpectedly falling in love along the way – we find that reinventing oneself as a “thoroughly modern” individual is harder than it looks. MTW’s Thoroughly Modern Millie is set to combine toe-tapping dance routines and jazzy musical numbers with hilarious cases of mistaken identity, all the while showing its audiences that “this is 1922!”

One World Week One World Week at the University of Warwick is part of the world’s largest student-run international event and one of the most exciting weeks on campus. Taking place every January, One World Week is a celebration of the cultures and diversity represented at Warwick and features a huge range of events. This year, Warwick Arts Centre will again be hosting two of the week’s most spectacular events: the Fashion Show in the Butterworth Hall (Sat 26 Jan) and the World Music Concert in the Theatre (Sun 27 Jan). The Fashion Show features models from the numerous societies at Warwick in addition to dazzling performances by the One World Week Models. The World Music Concert showcases the best musical talent at the University together with professional acts from around the world.

Gavin Bryars has been in the news recently with the centenary of the sinking of the Titanic, owing to his iconic piece based on that tragedy. His response to another tragedy is the subject of his Cadman Requiem, which mourns the passing of a friend on flight Pan Am 103 over Lockerbie in 1988. Orlando Gibbons’ First Book of Madrigals & Motets was published in 1612, contains the most famous, perfect and one of the shortest madrigals: The Silver Swan. Al Davison is an artist based in Coventry with over 25 years of experience in teaching life drawing, anatomy and visual storytelling; he has also produced artwork for the ‘Doctor Who’ graphic novels. On Tue 12 Feb, Al will be introducing a variety of technical drawing exercises designed to improve hand to eye coordination and tap into your imagination. Then, on Wed 13 Feb, and with the assistance of a model, he will be introducing the challenges and rewards of figure drawing to the group. Participants are welcome to attend one or both sessions.

Super Everything* A live cinema performance project by The Light Surgeons Sat 9 Mar 7.30pm Theatre £15.50, £10.50 for TEDxWarwick pass holders (see page 16 for details) SuperEverything* is a cross disciplinary performing arts project created by leading audio-visual artists The Light Surgeons in collaboration with a group of Malaysian artists and string players from the Heritage Orchestra. It seeks to discover how our complex sense of identity is formed through rituals. Filmed on location across Peninsular Malaysia, this live audio-visual performance explores the relationship between identity, ritual and place. By combining traditional South East Asian instruments, western classical compositions, field recordings and electronic synthesis, the resulting soundtrack is manipulated live and complemented by an stunning, immersive visual experience.

Consisting of a remarkable singer, a slippery rhythm section, a blues harpist and a guitarist, The Swaps play hardrolling, funked-up, folky tunes that some would describe as a kind of blues, as well as electro-acoustic waltzes, pop wig-outs and dubstep boogaloos, and the odd heart-wrencher. All cooked up in Leamington Spa.

Conductors - Roger Coull, Alexander Parker, Matthew Clare A String and Wind Orchestra whistle stop tour through space takes us from Freddie Mercury’s Bohemian Rhapsody, past Sousa’s Transit of Venus, down to Earth with Gladiator, out to Mars by Holst and further to the distant reaches of the Saturn Overture by Victor Lopez.

Support from The Society, whose music is based on traditional English and Irish folk but with a contemporary rock feel and a mixture of electronic and acoustic instruments.
