OPERA NORTH, WEST YORKSHIRE PLAYHOUSE AND WARWICK ARTS CENTRE PRESENT
The Tiger Lillies: Lulu – A Murder Ballad by Martyn Jacques Fri 7 & Sat 8 Feb 7.45pm
The Tiger Lillies’ genre-defying brand of other-worldly vocals and unnerving performance style have carved them a unique niche in the cabaret and music theatre scene. The character of Lulu is one of the great creations of 20th century fiction, and one of its most disturbing. Her unbridled sex appeal, her youth, and her self-destructiveness combine to make her dangerous, unpredictable and tragic. With the men (and the women) who circle her, Lulu’s journey from the streets to the toast of society and back again is told as a hypnotic and kaleidoscopic dance of death. Journey with her from Berlin to Paris, to the dark London streets of Jack The Ripper. The band’s flamboyant live performance is enhanced by a projected immersive and richly atmospheric environment. Across the night, the ballad of Lulu unfolds as an uncompromising musical and visual melodrama. Directed and designed by Mark Holthusen Performed by The Tiger Lillies and Laura Caldow Based on Frank Wedekind’s plays Earth Spirit (1895) and Pandora’s Box (1904) 100mins (including interval) / Age 16+ Theatre £18.50 (£16.50), £15.50 (£13.50) Under 26s £10

Near Gone
Karaoke
A heartfelt story about survival.
UK Premiere
Putting into the words the utterly unspeakable, two performers have a difficult story to tell.
Karaoke is a performance about love and rockets for two performers and an autocue.
This performance fills an empty space with gypsy-inspired music and 400 fresh flowers. It transforms you too, your sense of what it is to be a mother, a father, a child. And you’ll leave feeling more alive than ever.
Playing out as an actual karaoke, the text and action read from screen and projected for the audience to see, the show is an exercise in manic anti-theatricality that’s either brazenly cynical or pathetically honest (depending on how you want to look at it). When the chorus kicks in we can all sing along.
Devised and performed by Katherina Radeva and Alister Lownie. Dramaturgy and additional direction – Charlotte Vincent. Near Gone is the winner of Pulse Fringe Suitcase Prize 2013 and was part of Pilot Nights Autumn 2012.
T. Post Show Talk Wed 15 Jan 60mins / Age 14+ Studio £11.50 (£9.50) Under 26s £9 Near Gone is a Colchester Arts Centre commission, supported by Arts Council England and The Point, Eastleigh. Two Destination Language is the collaborative performance practice of Katherina Radeva and Alister Lownie.
Karaoke is the middle part of Lost in the Funhouse, a loosely connected trilogy of performances about pleasure and boredom in this, the adolescent decade of the 21st Century. The first part of the trilogy AMUSEMENTS was performed at Warwick Arts Centre last spring as part of (L)one. CANDOCO DANCE COMPANY
Triple Bill
Tue 4 & Wed 5 Mar 7.30pm Candoco, the renowned contemporary dance company of disabled and non-disabled performers, is twisting perceptions of what dance is, who can dance and who enjoys it. This triple bill features a new full-company piece by award-winning choreographer Thomas Hauert, as well as American contemporary dance pioneer Trisha Brown’s iconic Set and Reset/Reset, and Two for C, Javier de Frutos’ newest Mexicana-inspired duet for the company. Thomas Hauert’s new piece challenges the dancers’ habitual ways of moving, creating patterns by swirling, pushing, jittering and side-stepping in and out of formations, shifting and changing like a flock of birds. A Candoco highlight is the restaging of one of Trisha Brown’s signature works. Set to the original upbeat, contagious Laurie Anderson score, Set and Reset/Reset is a fluid, joyful work of pure dance. Two for C is inspired by Tennessee Williams’ Camino Real. Set to traditional Mexican Ranchera music, the performance takes place in an intimate domestic world in which the use of Mexican wrestling masks suggests the deeper, darker forces at work.

The Rite of Spring & Petrushka
The Valley of Astonishment
by Peter Brook and Marie-Hélène Estienne
Tue 29 & Wed 30 Apr 7.30pm
Wed 11 – Sat 14 Jun 7.30pm
The two halves of Michael Keegan-Dolan’s thrilling dance theatre double bill are a contrast in light and dark that mirrors the Stravinsky music of the same name. The imagery in The Rite of Spring is dark, shocking, violent and sexual. The rhythmic elements of the music are played out in scenes of a pagan fertility rite, as age is sacrificed and mother earth is worshipped.
UK Premiere straight from Paris Only performances in the UK outside London
By contrast Petrushka is bright and light. Elements of folk dances and warmer days are conjured as the company dances for approval from their ancestors. Performed by an international cast of 14, both works are theatrical interpretations of the original music that created such outrage and excitement in the early 20th century.
Imagine a world where every sound has a colour. Where every colour has a taste. Where the number 8 is a fat lady. This breathtaking new play explores the fascinating experiences of real people who see the world in a radically different light. The Valley of Astonishment is a kaleidoscopic journey into the wonders of the human brain, inspired by years of neurological research, true stories and Farid Attar’s epic mystical poem The Conference of the Birds.

WORDS & IDEAS TEDxWarwick 2014 Sun 2 Mar 10.30am – 6pm TEDx returns to Warwick for the most stimulating and fascinating TEDx conference yet. Since its inception in 2009, TEDxWarwick has continually succeeded in setting the global benchmark in showcasing revolutionary technology, science and innovation. The core theme connecting all talks and performances at TEDxWarwick 2014 will be ‘Inside Out’. Whether it is human flourishing, imminent environmental and health dangers, economic cycles, and social norms; understanding them inside out is invaluable to stimulating the necessary solutions. However, with radical discoveries and inventions, such as the successful quantum teleportation of particles over 50 miles, or the first ever creation of human embryonic stem cells by cloning, established wisdom is constantly being questioned and challenged. Individuals who have the ideas and drive to get to the roots of the problem and look at issues from different perspectives are continuously arriving at pioneering breakthroughs. At TEDxWarwick 2014, our aim is to highlight these extraordinary men and women, these innovators, whose determination to advance the human understanding and challenge the accepted is second to none. Butterworth Hall £15 Please book tickets through tedxwarwick.com

Conductor Piano
Andris Nelsons Lars Vogt
He’s been described as “the greatest and brightest hope on the international conducting scene” – and soon he’s off to pastures new, so tonight grab the chance to find out why Andris Nelsons’ partnership with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra set the musical world alight. From the rocketing energy and playful humour of Prokofiev’s firecracker of a First Symphony, to the Shakespearean tragedy of Brahms’ Fourth, this concert demonstrates the range of Nelsons’ musical personality – and shows the gift that has made him one of the world’s most sought-after conductors. Few living pianists bring such poetry and personality to everything they touch – Lars Vogt is one of them – and Mozart’s beautiful last piano concerto is almost a mini-opera for piano and orchestra. Together, Nelsons, Vogt and Mozart should create something intensely special.

Philharmonia Orchestra Tue 4 Feb 7.30pm Britten Elgar Vaughan Williams
Four Sea Interludes Cello Concerto Symphony No.6
Conductor Cello
Nicholas Collon Natalie Clein
When Vaughan Williams completed his Sixth Symphony, audiences expected a vision of peace. Instead, he unleashed hell. Vaughan Williams’ Sixth is a firestorm of a symphony, forged amidst the carnage of the Second World War, and ending with an apocalyptic vision of a world in ashes. Is this the greatest British symphony since Elgar? Decide for yourself after the young British conductor Nicholas Collon conducts the Philharmonia in two 24-carat British classics: Britten’s salty East Anglian seascapes, and Elgar’s memorial to a different conflict, the haunting, hugely popular Cello Concerto. Collon has won awards for his freshness and energy, and soloist Natalie Clein has been a firm audience favourite since becoming BBC Young Musician of the Year in 1994. They both have something important to say in some of the greatest music ever written in these islands.
Pre-concert Talk Woods-Scawen Room 6.15pm £2 Paul McGrath, Director of Music, University of Warwick in discussion with Nicholas Collon.
The Hallé Fri 28 Feb 7.30pm Ravel Mother Goose (complete ballet music) Richard Strauss Orchestral Songs Beethoven Symphony No.7 Conductor Tenor
Sir Mark Elder Steve Davislim
The Hallé has long been a British musical institution – and in recent years, under Music Director Sir Mark Elder, it’s been creating new legends, together becoming one of the great conductor / orchestra partnerships of our time, with the kind of rapport, spontaneity and joint artistry that comes from years of shared music making. Hold onto your seats, then, as together they launch into Beethoven’s heaven-storming Seventh Symphony: 40 minutes of great melodies, headlong energy and pure rhythm. This is music that makes you glad to be alive. So, in a different way, does Ravel’s adorable fairy-tale ballet Mother Goose, and Elder and the Hallé will make it glow with delicate colour. Savour every magical note; and revel in the sumptuous romance of Richard Strauss’s gorgeous orchestral songs – a wonderfully indulgent way to celebrate Strauss’s anniversary year.

Water Music Suite in G Brandenburg Concerto No.3 Concerto for 2 violins in A minor Suite No.2 in B minor Concerto Grosso Op.6 No.1 Brandenburg Concerto No.5
Conductor & Violin Hans-Peter Hofmann Harpsichord Steven Devine Flute Fiona Slominska Imagine an orchestra of friends: a hand-picked premiership team of Europe’s finest young professional players, coming together to perform music they love with all the commitment of a great string quartet, and all the brilliance of a top virtuoso soloist. That’s this orchestra, and everything they play sparkles with the joy of shared music-making. So imagine the fun as they’re unleashed on five of the baroque era’s most brilliant concertos. Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos and Handel’s Concerto Grosso gives the whole team a place in the sunlight – and there’s a lot more to Bach’s B minor suite than just the tune that launched a thousand ringtones. Vivaldi delivers double the enjoyment of his Four Seasons in his extraordinary Concerto for Two Violins – and you might have heard Handel’s Water Music during the Queen’s Jubilee River Pageant. But it’s even more enjoyable on dry land!

Ludwig van Beethoven wasn’t just one man – he was everyman. And no music explores what it is to be human more powerfully than his string quartets. In just one concert, the Coull tells his whole story, from the hotblooded young rebel-about-town of Op.18 No.3 to the uncompromising artistic statesman of his quartet Op.95. Then, to finish, the phenomenal Quartet Op.131: a vision of another world, from a deaf composer operating at the outer limits of genius.

Ernest Bloch hears quiet poetry, Samuel Barber and Matthew Arnold ask the deepest of questions, and Henryk Gorecki sings out with all the passion you’d expect from the composer of the famous 3rd Symphony. But Alexander Borodin’s thoughts turn to love – and no string quartet has produced as many pop hits as his gloriously tuneful Second. First, though the Coulls join forces with the great British baritone Roderick Williams for the world premiere of a new song cycle by one of British music’s most haunting musical landscape-painters: the wonderful Sally Beamish.

Sung in English Fri 9 & Sat 10 May 7.30pm
Charming and dreamlike, Paul Bunyan is often described as part-opera, part-musical, with elements of blues, folk songs and hymns making it a very accessible introduction to the music of Benjamin Britten. A humorous collaboration with poet W.H. Auden, it is a witty, imagery-rich evening set in a lumberjack’s camp, telling a story of the American frontier.
Probably the world’s favourite opera, Mozart’s The Magic Flute has enchanted music and theatre lovers of all ages for hundreds of years.
Britten
The opera is populated by an exotic array of characters, including giants, singing geese, dancing Swedes, bad cooks and a smooth chef. Support from John Doe Tue 6 May 7.30pm
Somewhere in London, a musician carries the keys to the musical kingdom. In his Technicolor sonic scope are all kinds of sounds, from rock to country to soul to pop. Nothing is off limits, as long as it has a groove and goodness based in reality. The musician has been performing for 40 years, but is as fresh today as the first time he stepped on stage. There are no tricks or short cuts here. Far from it. His songs are as solid as the earth, yet carry no lingering hype or heaviness. The musician is Nick Lowe, the headmaster of British rock and he’ll be coming to Warwick Arts Centre as part of his tour in Spring 2014. Theatre £27.50

After sorting out politics (Hitler Moustache), religion (Christ on a Bike), love (What is Love, Anyway?) and penises (Talking Cock), Richard Herring returns to tackle the undiscovered country from whose bourn no traveller returns (apart from Jesus and that canoe bloke). Is death a tragedy or an excuse to have an extended lie-in? Are we snuffed out or forced to endure eternity without bodily pleasures? Death is inevitable, so let’s laugh in its face while our hearts still beat and our jaws are still attached.

Art Trail
Bank on It
Thank you for donating! Warwick Arts Centre is a charity and if you’ve booked recently you’ll have heard about donations supporting our artistic commissioning work and our pioneering education work in the local community. Your contribution, however small, really does help us make a difference. Here are a couple of recent examples:
Education work Donations have enabled us to offer, for FREE, expert artists to intrigue and inspire the school children participating in our Sculpture and Colour Trails. This will be continued throughout the year. Donations are also helping support workshops in schools with professional companies performing at Warwick Arts Centre.
Artistic commissioning This season we have collaborated with Opera North and West Yorkshire Playhouse to coproduce a new version of Frank Wedekind’s Lulu by The Tiger Lillies.
Led by Matt Burman, Head of Programme and Audiences and produced by our Associated Producers China Plate, we are triggering a new digital work for children by choreographer Tom Dale called Ragbones (see pg 17). Also returning this season is Contender Charlie’s unforgettable Macbeth Blood Will Have Blood, originally developed through triggered@warwick (see pg. 16). It’s already been seen by over 3,000 young people and this season we’ve brought back the production for hundreds more local school children to be introduced to Shakespeare, alongside a performance for the public. Last season the widely acclaimed Bank on It, installed in an empty office in Coventry city centre, delighted families and schools. The project came out of This_is_Tomorrow, a residency at Warwick Arts Centre and the University of Warwick that brings together artists and academics, which Theatre-Rites’ Artistic Director Sue Buckmaster was part of. Inspired by the economists she met Sue conceived Bank on It, which was subsequently co-produced by Warwick Arts Centre and the Barbican.
“WE HAD A WONDERFUL TIME, THE SET WAS STUNNING, THE PERFORMANCES WERE INTOXICATING AND THE MESSAGES GIVEN AND LEARNT WERE SERIOUS YET ENGAGING.” “CAN’T QUITE DESCRIBE JUST HOW GOOD BANK ON IT WAS LAST NIGHT. WHOLE FAMILY LEFT INSPIRED.” Audience comments on Bank on It

Illustration by Liam Brazier Freelance illustrator and animator Liam Brazier is probably best known on the printed page for his angular, shape filled, geometric artwork inspired by his own personal popular culture nostalgia loves. His work has been exhibited in the UK, US, and beyond, for both small and large clients and used by the likes of Apple, Samsung and Queens of the Stone Age. Liam’s animations have been seen on the London Underground, and at festivals worldwide. www.liambrazier.com
