theatre Government Inspector by Nikolai Gogol in a new version by David Harrower directed by Richard Jones

Celebrated comic actor Julian Barratt in a new production of this glorious Russian comedy. Multiple Olivier Award winners Richard Jones (Anna Nicole, Royal Opera House) and David Harrower (Blackbird, Knives in Hens) team up for a new version of this classic comedy featuring The Mighty Boosh’s Julian Barratt, Smack the Pony’s Doon Mackichan and the ‘superb’ Kyle Soller (Daily Telegraph on The Glass Menagerie at the Young Vic). The news that a government inspector is due to arrive in a small Russian town sends its bureaucrats into a panicked frenzy. A simple case of mistaken identity exposes the hypocrisy and corruption at the heart of the town in this biting moral satire.

Joe Bone

Bane

Fuel presents

The Summer House

Thu 23 Jun 7.45pm Studio £10.50 (£8.50)

a comedy thriller Joe Bone’s hilarious one-man genre parody Bane.

devised by Will Adamsdale, Neil Haigh, Matthew Steer and John Wright directed by John Wright

Hired hand Bruce Bane works the mean streets of pulp fiction. As he goes about his shadowy business down back alleys and eerie sidewalks, he shoots from the hip and asks questions later.

Tue 3 & Wed 4 May 7.45pm Studio £10.50 (£8.50) Ages: 14+

Then the Vikings arrive. This is a play about men and all their crap, about myths and what they’re for and about the weather and how it blows all the other stuff away anyway.

The Summer House is a first time collaboration between Will Adamsdale (Jackson’s Way), Neil Haigh (Cartoon de Salvo), Matthew Steer (Britain’s Best Mate) and John Wright (co-founder of Told by an Idiot and Trestle). “Director John Wright has a wonderfully unashamed sense of theatre.” The Independent

The Summer House photo: Edmund Collier

Three men arrive by car at a remote house in the countryside. Who are they? Where are they? Are those stuffed beavers on the wall?

Inspired by hard-boiled detective stories and classic film noir, Joe Bone plays all the parts bringing his comic antihero, a tale of bloody revenge and the city itself to life with just his body, his voice and live guitar soundtrack from Ben Roe. Acclaimed by audiences and critics alike this is one show you simply have to see. Since its premiere at Brighton Festival 2009, where it won the Fringe Review ‘Outstanding Theatre’ Award, Bane followed on with a total sell-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe 2010 where it was met with a sweep of five star reviews. “Bane is certainly an engaging anti-hero but it is Bone who proves himself the hero of this highly entertaining hour. It’s a remarkable achievement.” The Stage

People can’t fail to notice Mark Titchner’s bold work Everything Is Real, There Is No Audience as you enter the Butterworth Hall. This work provoked us into thinking about the relationship between us as programmers and you as audiences. Our summer studio season certainly blurs some boundaries between artist and audience. From Something or Nothing – which asks whether we are right to think of ourselves as something, when in fact might we actually be nothing – to leaving behind our theatre spaces altogether for the intimate It’s Like He’s Knocking (backstage in a makeshift bedsit) and every minute, always, an interactive headphones piece in our cinema. And then we have Ontroerend Goed (incidentally one of our favourite contemporary companies), who tell us “You’ll be safe – but we want to get under your skin…”. Unmissable. That’s just a taster. There’s lots more not mentioned here – please do read on and use this summer as a great opportunity to see a range of work right at the cutting edge of contemporary performance! Something Or Nothing created and performed by Guy Dartnell directed by Sinéad Rushe lighting by Katharine Williams produced by Natasha Davis Thu 5 & Fri 6 May 7.45pm Studio £10.50 (£8.50), Under 26s £7.50 1hr 20mins Ages: 16+

Guy Dartnell, international award winner and Improbable, Lone Twin Theatre and Dance 4 associate artist, brings us his latest solo creation. This is a show about mistaken identity – not just of an individual, but of the human race en masse. Employing his trademark humour, frankness, vulnerability and wit, and blending video and chalk images with performance, lecture, storytelling and stand up, Dartnell explores this possible error in our perception – that we believe ourselves to be something, when we might actually be nothing. “A daringly inventive piece of theatre that arrives on the fringe like a blast of fresh air.” Time Out (on Would say Something) Commissioned by Axis Arts Centre, Exeter Phoenix and Oval House Theatre and supported by Bristol Old Vic’s Ferment and Arts Council England. 2007 scratch phase supported by Lilian Baylis Theatre, Colchester Arts Centre, Lakeside Arts Centre and Merlin Theatre Frome.

Fri 29 Apr 8pm Butterworth Hall £18.50 Tickets Selling Fast!

“Leave your preconceptions at home,” begins one London critic’s assessment of sensual singer-songwriter Sarah Jane Morris, who straddles rock, blues, jazz and soul with a goosebump-raising four octave range. Famed for her association with The Communards in the mid80s and infamous for a banned rendition of the classic Me and Mrs Jones, Sarah Jane Morris has always attracted as much

attention for her politics as for her soul-driven, seismic voice. Eleven solo albums later, pop stardom on the continent, and a diverse set of musical collaborations on record, film and stage, Morris continues to steer her unorthodox career to greater heights.

Winners of Best Group and Best Live Band at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2011 Bellowhead are clearly a band with considerable boundary-crossing appeal. The 11 piece, who play more than 25 instruments between them (from Helicon to frying pan) and seamlessly merge English folk, world, jazz, rock and music-hall influences, are one of the few bands performing today who can dart effortlessly between the establishment and the fringes.

“Soaring, swooping, sensual and sophisticated, this voice is more than a style, it’s a force of nature…” The Observer

“Wild, joyous, perverse, bold, crazed, full-blooded, intricate, fearless, funny, epic and mostly BIG. Best live band we have. No contest.” fRoots

Hubert Dalwood Landscape into Sculpture Sat 7 May – Sat 25 Jun

22

www.warwickartscentre.co.uk

Hubert Dalwood (1924-76) was a leading post-war British sculptor, described by the art critic Norbert Lynton as ‘one of the most original and inventive minds in the field of modern sculpture’. In the 1950s and 1960s his work received considerable critical acclaim both at home and abroad, winning prizes and prestigious commissions. Dalwood’s early works, modelled in clay and plaster before casting, reveal his fascination with qualities of surface. Focusing initially on the female figure, from the mid-1950s he created a series of ‘mysterious’ objects. Their heavily worked and textured skins recall those of archaeological artefacts, excavated from the earth, as well as the craggy terrains of natural landscapes.

40p per ticket booking fee applies

From the mid-1960s, following a period spent teaching in North America, Dalwood became increasingly interested in architecture and its relationship to landscape. He started to create monumental architectural forms out of polished aluminium and sheet metal, which reflect their surroundings; and imagined, magical environments – vast landscapes on a small scale – which can be understood in their entirety when seen from above. The exhibition has been developed by the New Art Centre, Roche Court and includes works from the Dalwood Estate as well as from private collections. An illustrated catalogue accompanies the show.

Anni Albers Design Pioneer Sat 7 May – Sat 25 Jun Anni Albers was one of the pioneers of modernism. A pre-eminent textile artist, she studied with Paul Klee at the Bauhaus. Throughout her life she was uncompromising in her approach to art – pushing boundaries and experimenting with every medium she employed. She left the politically hostile Germany in 1933 with her husband, eminent abstract painter Josef Albers, to work at the experimental Black Mountain College in North Carolina. As well as working in textiles, she also made inventive jewellery from ordinary household objects and latterly worked in printmaking.

Foundation in Connecticut USA. This is the first time that Anni Albers’ prints, textiles and jewellery have been seen together in Britain. It is fitting that the only English showing of this exhibition is in Coventry, a centre for weaving since the medieval period and now at the forefront of innovative material design.

Crowd Pleaser

Thu 28 & Fri 29 Apr 7.30pm Theatre £15 (£10) Following his sell-out nationwide show The Manifesto, awardwinning comedian and activist Mark Thomas returns with his brand new show: Extreme Rambling (Walking The Wall). Never one to take the easy option, Mark decided to go rambling in the Middle East and walked the entire length of the Israeli Separation Barrier crossing between the Israeli and the Palestinian side. This is the story of 300,000 settlers; a 750km wall; six arrests, one stoning; too much hummus and a simple question... “Can you ever get away from it all with a good walk?”

For those of you who missed it the first time around, Ed Byrne returns with his hit show, Crowd Pleaser. Exploring subjects and situations Ed finds frustratingly maddening, Crowd Pleaser is a hilarious insight into Ed’s life. Continuing his quest to turn into a grumpy old man, whether he is talking about his cat, cake, religion or potential fatherhood, Ed is always certain to deliver the laughs in abundance.

Miles Jupp Fibber in the Heat Sat 7 May & Thu 26 May 7.45pm Studio £12 (£10) After pulling a few strings and telling some little lies, an unprepared and unqualified Jupp heads to India with the English press to embark on a month long, sun-soaked disaster (and some minor triumphs). A sorry tale of how he attempted to become a cricket journalist by the unlikely, ill–thought out and dishonest method of pretending to be one.

“Jupp poignantly and humorously captures that awful sense of desperation in knowing that you don’t belong somewhere… he is a wonderful storyteller… bloody marvellous” HHHH Fest

For the last ten years, since his multi award-winning international TV hit, Trigger Happy TV, Dom Joly has lead the most extraordinary of lives. Prepare to laugh-out-loud as Dom talks us through the perils of travelling the world drinking, skiing down volcanoes, holidaying in Chernobyl and North Korea, becoming a paparazzo, trying to fly across the Grand Canyon strapped to an eight foot rocket, turning into Tintin, being arrested in Switzerland while dressed as

a yeti, discovering that he was at school with Osama Bin Laden and eating from Gillian McKeith’s pants while imprisoned in the Australian jungle. In this highly original and funny show, Dom attempts to make sense of it all with the aid of some very peculiar holiday snaps.

Landscapes Tue 14 – Sat 18 Jun Tue – Fri: 9.45am, 11.15am, 1.15pm, 4.30pm Sat: 11am, 1pm, 2.30pm Helen Martin Studio £9 (£6) Ages: 4–11 50mins The sun rises over a buzzing desert… …a chick hatches… An eagle leaves its nest in search of food… below, the Meerkats are alert… Thus begins a wonderful journey which takes younger children to four landscapes lovingly realised in this exquisite and intimate performance set in a white canvas dome. From desert to rainforest and from beneath the sea to Antarctica, this is a journey that no child should miss and a theatrical experience that all adults will find unforgettable.

Using elaborate puppets, beautifully designed lighting, an original soundtrack, and choreographed gesture and movement, Landscapes is a non-verbal exploration of the atmosphere, rhythms and sounds of four contrasting areas of the natural world. It creates a theatre of remarkable visual effects and transformations. Following the performance there is an informal session where the Company can answer questions from the audience and show how the effects and puppets are created.

Dir: Kelly Asbury UK 2011 84mins Cast: James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, Ashley Jensen, Maggie Smith, Michael Caine

Dir: Reginald Mills UK 1971 90mins Cast: Frederick Ashton, Alexander Grant, Julie Wood, Wayne Sleep

This cheerful adaptation of Romeo and Juliet transfers the action to neighbouring London gardens with the blue gnomes (Montagues) and the red gnomes (Capulets). An all star cast includes James McAvoy and Emily Blunt as the star crossed lovers and Michael Caine and Maggie Smith as their parents. Complimented by a fun soundtrack from Elton John this is a treat for the whole family. (And the ending’s not as grim as Shakespeare!)

Potter’s beloved characters such as Mrs. Tiggywinkle, Jemima Puddleduck and Peter Rabbit are beautifully brought to life by the fantastic dancers of the Ashton Ballet Company. Faultless dancing on an exceptional set with charming music this is a true delight for the whole family.

Sat 25 Jun 1.30pm Cinema £4.50 (£2.50)

This critically acclaimed coming of age story follows the young Will (Milner) who, after seeing Rambo: First Blood, is convinced into making a sequel with the worst behaved boy in school, Lee (Poulter). Through making their sequel; the boys develop a deep friendship and become blood brothers. But when French exchange student Didier wants to get involved in the film, complications develop. A film that is warm, likeable and honest while avoiding sentimentalism. Certainly a grown up kids film.
