Celebrated comic actor Julian Barratt in a new production of this glorious Russian comedy. Multiple Olivier Award winners Richard Jones (Anna Nicole, Royal Opera House) and David Harrower (Blackbird, Knives in Hens) team up for a new version of this classic comedy featuring The Mighty Boosh’s Julian Barratt, Smack the Pony’s Doon Mackichan and the ‘superb’ Kyle Soller (Daily Telegraph on The Glass Menagerie at the Young Vic). The news that a government inspector is due to arrive in a small Russian town sends its bureaucrats into a panicked frenzy. A simple case of mistaken identity exposes the hypocrisy and corruption at the heart of the town in this biting moral satire.

Inspired by hard-boiled detective stories and classic film noir, Joe Bone plays all the parts bringing his comic antihero, a tale of bloody revenge and the city itself to life with just his body, his voice and live guitar soundtrack from Ben Roe. Acclaimed by audiences and critics alike this is one show you simply have to see. People can’t fail to notice Mark Titchner’s bold work Everything Is Real, There Is No Audience as you enter the Butterworth Hall. This work provoked us into thinking about the relationship between us as programmers and you as audiences. Our summer studio season certainly blurs some boundaries between artist and audience. From Something or Nothing – which asks whether we are right to think of ourselves as something, when in fact might we actually be nothing – to leaving behind our theatre spaces altogether for the intimate It’s Like He’s Knocking (backstage in a makeshift bedsit) and every minute, always, an interactive headphones piece in our cinema. And then we have Ontroerend Goed (incidentally one of our favourite contemporary companies), who tell us “You’ll be safe – but we want to get under your skin…”. Unmissable. That’s just a taster. Coming from a French family of singers, long summer meals were often rounded off with French chansons. Hubert Dalwood (1924-76) was a leading post-war British sculptor, described by the art critic Norbert Lynton as ‘one of the most original and inventive minds in the field of modern sculpture’. In the 1950s and 1960s his work received considerable critical acclaim both at home and abroad, winning prizes and prestigious commissions. Dalwood’s early works, modelled in clay and plaster before casting, reveal his fascination with qualities of surface. Focusing initially on the female figure, from the mid-1950s he created a series of ‘mysterious’ objects. Their heavily worked and textured skins recall those of archaeological artefacts, excavated from the earth, as well as the craggy terrains of natural landscapes.

From the mid-1960s, following a period spent teaching in North America, Dalwood became increasingly interested in architecture and its relationship to landscape. He started to create monumental architectural forms out of polished aluminium and sheet metal, which reflect their surroundings; and imagined, magical environments – vast landscapes on a small scale – which can be understood in their entirety when seen from above. The exhibition has been developed by the New Art Centre, Roche Court and includes works from the Dalwood Estate as well as from private collections. An illustrated catalogue accompanies the show.

Anni Albers Design Pioneer Sat 7 May – Sat 25 Jun Anni Albers was one of the pioneers of modernism. A pre-eminent textile artist, she studied with Paul Klee at the Bauhaus. Throughout her life she was uncompromising in her approach to art – pushing boundaries and experimenting with every medium she employed. She left the politically hostile Germany in 1933 with her husband, eminent abstract painter Josef Albers, to work at the experimental Black Mountain College in North Carolina. As well as working in textiles, she also made inventive jewellery from ordinary household objects and latterly worked in printmaking.

Foundation in Connecticut USA. This is the first time that Anni Albers’ prints, textiles and jewellery have been seen together in Britain. It is fitting that the only English showing of this exhibition is in Coventry, a centre for weaving since the medieval period and now at the forefront of innovative material design.

Using elaborate puppets, beautifully designed lighting, an original soundtrack, and choreographed gesture and movement, Landscapes is a non-verbal exploration of the atmosphere, rhythms and sounds of four contrasting areas of the natural world. It creates a theatre of remarkable visual effects and transformations. Following the performance there is an informal session where the Company can answer questions from the audience and show how the effects and puppets are created.

In Howl’s castle Sophie must help the wizard defeat the witch and find a solution to a grand war between two ancient kingdoms, while trying to rediscover her youth. Miyazaki is a master of animation and it shows in this stunning film with its amazing story based on a novel by Diana Wynne Jones.
