Much Ado About Nothing

If there is a theme in the summer programme it is that of strong and independent women, like Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing and with Cleopatra. We are currently graced by a plethora of female comedians who are exploring new territory and finessing both broad humour and insightful comment. Of these, Saturday Night Live graduates Tina Fey (30 Rock) and Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids) are consistently strong. Fey returns as an admissions officer for Princeton University in Admissions, where the personal becomes political and further education criteria get examined. Wiig’s Girl Most Likely looks at the consequences of early success and the aftermath.

Thérèse Desqueyroux

hello

Julie Delpy in Before Midnight is no shrinking violet either. Having wooed (Before Sunrise), lost and regained (Before Sunset) Ethan Hawke, they are now married with kids, wondering what happened to romance. Probably the most startling female on film is Wadjda, a 10 year old Saudi girl, on the cusp of adolescence and acting out, in this first film by a Saudi woman director. Of course, there is no shortage of psychotic men to balance things out. The most memorable of these is Klaus Kinski’s conquistador in Aguirre, Wrath of God. Elsewhere, Michael Shannon is a hired assassin in The Iceman, the biopic that charts his career from the 1960s to the 90s, and more male mayhem is unleashed in the Swedish thriller Easy Money. If that is too strong a meat for your taste, you might enjoy some classic Studio Ghibli animation with the classics, My Neighbour Totoro and the more challenging Grave of the Fireflies or the most recent release, From Up on Poppy Hill. One thing’s for sure, we shall have a great summer of film, whatever the weather decides to do.

Mon 1 - Thu 4 & Tue 23 – Thu 25 Jul Dir: Joss Whedon US 2012 107mins Cast: Amy Acker, Emma Bates, Sara Blindauer, Alexis Denisof, Nathan Fillion

Fri 5 – Thu 11 Jul Dir: Steven Soderbergh US 2013 118mins Cast: Matt Damon, Debbie Reynolds, Michael Douglas, Rob Lowe

After the success of Avengers Assemble and The Cabin in the Woods, director Joss Whedon returns with a distinctly low-fi and personal film. Shot entirely in his own house, with a cast of friends from previous projects (including Alexis Denisof and Amy Acker from Buffy/ Angel) Whedon directs a classy modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s comedy of mistaken identity, delivered in the original verse.

“A warm, funny and breezy contemporary version of William Shakespeare’s comedy of love and misunderstanding.” Screen International Behind the Candelabra

After the rumours that Side Effects was going to be his last film, Steven Soderbergh returns with another swansong, this time a biopic of the flambouyant pianist, Liberace. Starring a superb Michael Douglas as the closeted homosexual and Matt Damon as his young live-in companion Scott Thorson, the film traces their five year relationship, from their first meeting backstage to Scott’s surgery to look more like Liberace.

“The exceptional Liberace biopic... proves why film still needs Steven Soderbergh.”  The Telegraph

Before Midnight 15 Fri 5 – Thu 11 Jul Dir: Richard Linklater US 2013 109mins Cast: Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy Nearly two decades since their first encounter aboard a train in Vienna, Before Midnight (the follow up to Before Sunrise and Before Sunset) finds Celine (Delpy) and Jessie (Hawke) in their 40s in Greece. Now with two kids and grappling with the adult issues of child-rearing, missed opportunities and career ambitions, tensions soon reach boiling point. With superbly-observed dialogue and great natural chemistry between its two leads, Before Midnight is an honest and highly recognisable portrait of the joys and frustrations of modern relationships.

“One of the great movie romances of the modern era.” Variety

Queen comedian Tina Fey makes a welcome return to the big screen in this comedy from the director of About a Boy. Fey is Portia, a Princeton admissions officer who spends her time sidestepping bribes from pushy parents, desperate to secure their child’s college place. Invited to meet a prospective student at an unconventional school run by a former classmate (Rudd), Portia begins to think that the boy may be the son she gave up for adoption, and starts bending her own rules on his behalf. 04

Michael Shannon (Take Shelter, Man of Steel) delivers another intense and consuming performance in this true story of hitman and serial killer Richard Kuklinski. In 1970s and 80s New York, Kuklinski appeared to the outside world (including his wife and children) like a quiet family man and blue-collar worker. In reality, he had been hired by the mafia as a contract killer, and in practising his craft, he also killed hundreds of other men in random killings across New York State. When the police finally caught up with him, he estimated he had killed up to 200 people.

Renoir tbc Fri 19 – Thu 25 Jul Dir: Gilles Bourdos France 2012 111mins subtitled Cast: Michel Bouquet, Christa Theret, Vincent Rottiers It’s 1915 and deep in luscious landscapes of the French Riviera, Impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir is looking for inspiration. When injured son Jean arrives at the summer home, he encounters Andrée, a captivating red head who is his father’s latest muse. Like his father, Jean is entranced by Andrée and she stimulates the future filmmaker’s interest in cinema. A beautifully shot period piece with excellent performances from the three leads, Renoir is a gentle and intelligent portrayal of the Renoirs and the key woman in their lives.

“A lush, involving film that deals not with one Renoir but two.” Los Angeles Times

To the Wonder 12a

Terrence Malick continues his recent stream of films with this beautiful story of a doomed love affair. Described as a companion piece to his previous work, The Tree of Life, the film explores rapture, heartache and temptation through the relationship between Neil (Affleck), an American engineer and Marina (Kurylenko), a passionate free spirit. Intertwined with the central couple is Javier Bardem’s Catholic priest who’s struggling with a crisis of faith. Malick’s trademark lyrical imagery lights up the settings, from the romantic streets of Paris and the grand coastal castle of Mont Saint-Michel to the strip malls of Oklahoma. An absorbing and thoughtful portrait on the ecstasy and pain of love.

Sat 10 & Mon 12 Aug Dir: William Wyler US 1953 135mins Cast: Gregory Peck, Audrey Hepburn, Eddie Albert

This colossal epic was the most expensive film ever made when it came out in 1963 and it nearly bankrupted the studio giant 20th Century Fox. But it is probably better known for its off-screen romance, where Elizabeth Taylor first got together with Richard Burton.

Audrey Hepburn’s legacy continues to burn brightly, thanks to this remastered re-issue of one of her classic films, Roman Holiday.

The story covers the years leading up to the foundation of the Roman Empire, from Cleopatra’s (Taylor) first meeting with Caesar (Harrison) until her death alongside her lover Marc Anthony (Burton).

“A giant panorama, unequalled in the splendour of its spectacle scenes.” Variety This screening will include an interval.

Princess Ann is on a strictly scheduled tour of Europe’s capitals. When she arrives in Rome, she tires of the constant surveillance and escapes from her guards. Incognito in the city, she befriends an American journalist called Joe Bradley (Peck). When he realises her true identity, he promises his editor an exclusive interview with the princess, but will she want to take part? A classic romantic comedy, for which Hepburn deservedly won a Best Actress Oscar.
