WELCOME I’ve now been at Warwick Arts Centre for a year and it’s been a pleasure to oversee the start of our transformation. Exciting times lie ahead for our building, which you’ll see emerging in the coming months. In the meantime, however, we continue with our packed programme. It’s a programme for everyone, and I am confident that within these pages you’ll find something for you. It’s a season that includes a diverse range of artists and voices addressing some of the most urgent issues of our time. I believe that the arts have the ability to interrogate the world we live in and nudge us to take action. CHANGE Festival (see pages 20 – 22) is a great case in point. Three days of inspirational events that will help us imagine a better future. This year I’ve had the privilege of working with our programming team to champion artists who question the progress society has made in issues such as identity and gender politics. Our programme advocates both emerging and well-known voices using art to inspire, to challenge and to entertain. Enjoy – and don’t forget to try something new!

THEATRE, DANCE & CIRCUS One by Bertrand Lesca and Nasi Voutsas Tue 24 & Wed 25 Sep 7.30pm Exploring power dynamics and political themes on a micro human level, ONE is about polarisation; it’s about the left and the right. It’s also about two people who need to fix an awful, toxic relationship. ONE is a painful conversation, either late at night or the early morning, in which neither side can bring themselves to just leave the room. “THEY ARE, TO MY MIND, ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING PROSPECTS IN BRITISH THEATRE.” Whatsonstage 1hr 5mins / All ages Studio £15 Commissioned by Battersea Arts Centre and Bristol Old Vic Ferment. Candoco Dance Company Thu 3 Oct 7.30pm Candoco presents two works: a never before seen piece, Hot Mess, by internationally renowned choreographer and designer Theo Clinkard, and the wild and sensual Face In by Israeli choreographer Yasmeen Godder. Hot Mess is an unpredictable and anarchic performance set to a pounding, eclectic score by Joe Newman of alt-J, whilst Face In is an ode to intimacy and imagination, expressed through striking images interwoven with daring and uninhibited dance. Candoco Dance Company created a sensation last year when its contemporary dancers performed to over 10 million people on BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing. This renowned company of disabled and non-disabled dancers continues to deliver a profound, boundary-pushing experience in its latest double bill.

WARWICK ARTS CENTRE & CHINA PLATE

Trying It On written and performed by David Edgar directed by Christopher Haydon Tue 8 & Wed 9 Oct 7.30pm

06

It’s 1968. David is 20 and in his second year at University. It is the height of the world-wide student revolt. The Vietnam war rages. Powell delivers his “rivers of blood” speech. Martin Luther King is assassinated. These events will define David’s politics and give focus to his writing. It’s 50 years on. The 71-year-old is confronted by the 20-year-old. Do they share the same beliefs? If not, is it the world that’s changed, or him? Why did his generation vote Brexit? Has he sold in or sold out?

This magnetic performance by Australian artist, Justin Shoulder, introduces Carrion: a post-human spectre with the ability to shapeshift into multiple forms and speak multiple languages. Drawing on queer and bicultural ancestral mythologies, Carrion transports us into a place where the distant past collides with the far future, alerting us to the changes that already lie within ourselves. 60mins / Age 16+ contains nudity Theatre £17 (£15) Produced by Insite Arts Image: Alex Davies

How Did I Die Tue 15 Oct 9pm & Wed 16 Oct 7.45pm In How Did I Die time cannot be trusted: neither the period from the discovery of the body to a possible conclusion, nor the possible final hours of the deceased. Nothing is certain. Time and truth are manipulated, conspiracy theories revised. The truth is a complex puzzle in which our fantasies can be gruesomely real or unreal. Just one murder has taken place, but there are countless paths that could have led to it. Does the reconstruction bring us closer to the truth, or does it push us further away? How Did I Die is a realistically fictional, cinematic, physical production from Rotterdam artist, Davy Pieters. Walking Through Time An Art and History Trail Oct 2019 – Sep 2020 Open all day, every day of the week. FREE Created by Jake and Dinos Chapman, who are among the best-known artists working today, The Good and The Bad are two vast corten steel dinosaurs. They resemble huge children’s model-making kits and appear clumsy and lovable. From October 2019, The Good and The Bad are on loan to the University of Warwick for one year only and form the focus of a new art and history trail leading across the campus. In addition to The Good and The Bad, the trail incorporates a number of new and existing sculptures from the University of Warwick Art Collection and provides some fascinating and at times, gruesome facts, about the history of the site. Details of the new Walking Through Time trail are provided on a beautifully hand-drawn map by the illustrator Helen Cann, which can be collected from Warwick Arts Centre or downloaded from warwickartscentre.co.uk/walking-through-time

Groups & Schools Curator-led Trails for groups of 10 or more can be organised on request. As part of the Walking Through Time trail you can choose to enjoy FREE bespoke tours for EYFS, KS1 or KS2. We also offer FREE Art Detectives sessions. In these sessions we will take your school group on a half day trail exploring sculpture on campus and follow this with a practical session based on the morning’s discoveries.

University of Warwick Students and Staff The art and history trail is the perfect way to explore campus, get some fresh air and clock-up the daily step-count. Looking for an alternative social event for your society or department? We can design bespoke curator-led tours throughout the year.

Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra Sat 12 Oct 7.30pm Tchaikovsky Romeo and Juliet Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 2 Shostakovich Symphony No.10 Conductor Yuri Botnari Piano John Lill In Soviet Russia, censors called it an “optimistic tragedy”, but for Shostakovich, it was simply his Tenth Symphony. Epic in scale, compelling in emotional power, and featuring at its heart an electrifying musical portrait of Stalin himself, what’s certain is that Shostakovich’s Tenth is one of the mightiest of all 20th Century masterpieces. Tonight, Yuri Botnari leads the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra through its dark corridors, and these players have this music in their very souls. This will be a thrilling way to begin our season, and an overwhelming finish to a concert that begins with the star-crossed romance of Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet, before Botnari and the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra welcome the incomparable John Lill for Rachmaninov’s Second Concerto. Conductor Guitar

José Luis Gomez Miloš Karadaglić

Every generation produces at least one superstar classical guitarist, but for sheer charisma, there aren’t many that can touch Miloš Karadaglić. This concert with the Flanders Symphony Orchestra and the rising Spanish conductor, José Luis Gomez, doesn’t just offer the chance to hear Miloš in Rodrigo’s lovely Concierto de Aranjuez. He’ll be playing exquisite Brazilian miniatures, too: the heart of a sultry, Latin-themed evening that embraces the comedy of Rossini, the smouldering flamenco passion of Manuel de Falla, and the unforgettable melodies of Bizet’s Carmen. Messiah

Conductor/Director

Christopher Monks

Conductor Cellist

Courtney Lewis Nicholas Trygstad

“Today I saw 16 swans. One of the greatest experiences of my life. God, what beauty!” That transcendent vision inspired Sibelius to compose the finale of his Fifth Symphony, and one of the noblest, but simplest tunes, ever written. It’s hard to imagine a more magnificent ending to this concert from Manchester’s Hallé Orchestra, under the dynamic young British conductor Courtney Lewis, who has already made quite a splash in the USA.

Hallelujah! Handel’s Messiah is more than just another great choral work: it’s practically a national institution. Messiah is part of the soundtrack of all our lives, and from Ev’ry Valley and For Unto Us a Child is Born to I Know That My Redeemer Liveth and of course Hallelujah!, you’ll already know the tunes. No Christmas season is complete without it, and this performance by the Warwickshire-based period instrumental ensemble, Armonico Consort, under its Artistic Director, Christopher Monks, gets back to the style of performance Handel himself would have known. You’ll never hear a fresher or more joyful Messiah.

Sibelius’s Fifth Symphony will make a striking contrast to the wood smoke and autumnal poetry of Elgar’s haunting Cello Concerto: the Hallé’s own principal cellist Nicholas Trygstad takes the spotlight tonight, but not before we’ve visited the enchanted garden of Ravel’s ravishing Mother Goose Suite: an exquisite opening to an evening of fantastical visions and fairytale wonder.
