Fri 6 – Thu 12 Nov Dir: Wes Anderson. UK 2009 93mins Voices: George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Bill Murray, Michael Gambon In his first animated feature, Wes Anderson (The Life Aquatic, The Royal Tenenbaums) proves the perfect filmmaker to bring Roald Dahl’s much-loved story to the screen. Mr and Mrs Fox live an idyllic home life, but after 12 years this proves too much for Mr. Fox’s wild animal instincts. Soon he slips back into his old ways as a sneaky chicken thief, and in doing so endangers not only his own beloved family, but the whole animal community. Trapped 03 underground with not enough food to go round, the animals band together to fight against the evil farmers Boggis, Bunce and Bean, who are determined to capture the audacious, fantastic Mr. Fox at any cost. This comic and darkly ironic look at Romania under the Ceaucescu regime uses five urban myths from this so called ‘golden age’ to show the idiocies of daily life in a dictatorship. The tales present a rudimentary approach to media manipulation, doctoring the image of the leader to make him look taller; the lengths to which people would go to relieve the monotony of the mid-80s Romanian diet; and the impact of the growth of free enterprise on individual lives. This affectionate look at the absurdity of the communist regime is both knowledgeable and knowing, with plenty of laugh-out-loud moments.

Starsuckers tbc Wed 25 Nov Conference Room Dir: Chris Atkins UK 2009 100mins
Starsuckers is a dark, satirical polemic that examines the psychological reasons behind our irrational obsession with fame, a journey through the problems that overconsumption of celebrity-dominated media has inflicted on us and our children. This is a blisteringly paced, anarchic ride which uses humour and mischief to expose the immoral, corrupt and illegal practices of some of the biggest names in the media industry. The film has been written and directed by Chris Atkins, whose last feature documentary Taking Liberties was a critical and commercial hit and nominated for a BAFTA in 2008. Similarly hilarious and hard hitting, Starsuckers uses a combination of exclusive footage, real life stories, dazzling animation and undercover filming.

Michael Haneke’s latest, mesmerising work, which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes in May, surveys the life of a rural Protestant village in northern Germany over several months from 1913 to 1914, ending, tellingly, on the eve of World War One. The rituals and intimacies of domestic lives are experienced in the homes of the pastor, the baron, the doctor and the steward. But strange, violent acts start to occur: the doctor’s horse falls over a trip wire, the crops in the field are destroyed, an accident happens in the mill…
The unlikely pair started at odds; he thinking her a stylish minx, she unimpressed by literature in general. But by the time Fanny’s alarmed mother and Keats’ best friend Brown realised their attachment, the relationship had an unstoppable momentum. Together they rode a wave of romantic obsession that deepened as their troubles mounted. Only Keats’ illness proved insurmountable.
Partly a portrait of a time and place in history and partly a study of how sickness in the home can lead to sickness in society, it’s a mystery that, in typical Haneke fashion, is down to us to unravel.

The popularity of Shakespeare's tragedies appears to go in cycles. The close of the last century saw a spate of Othellos and the start of this a hesitancy of Hamlets. There are currently two new productions of King Lear in production or preproduction, one with Anthony Hopkins, the other with Al Pacino. It seems timely to examine the history of Anglo Saxon king on screen with Professor Anthony Howard and to focus on a recent production, My Kingdom in which Peter O'Toole plays Lear as a gangland boss in contemporary Liverpool. Director, Don Boyd will be here to introduce the film and talk about his realisation.
