A cryptic message from Bond’s past sends him on a trail to uncover a sinister organisation. While M battles political forces to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth behind SPECTRE. “DANIEL CRAIG HAS GROWN INTO THE ROLE OF THE BRITISH SPY WITH FLAIR AND SANG-FROID AND THIS INVENTIVE, INTELLIGENT AND COMPLEX NEW OUTING SHOWCASES HIM BRILLIANTLY”
The Guardian 02
The profoundly moving story of Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan), a young Irish immigrant navigating her way through 1950s Brooklyn, torn between her homeland and her future. Director John Crowley (Boy A, Intermission), adroitly balances tone and mood, combining the pristine romance of Pride and Prejudice with the nostalgic trappings of 1950s Americana. “THIS FAIRYTALE OF NEW YORK CASTS A SPELL” The Guardian
Suffragette 12a Mon 4 – Thu 7 Jan Dir: Sarah Gavron UK/France 2015 106mins Cast: Helena Bonham Carter, Carey Mulligan, Meryl Streep Sarah Gavron (Brick Lane) and writer Abi Morgan (The Iron Lady) reposition the often overlooked story of the earliest woman’s movement as a significant part of English history. It’s more than a nostalgic period piece, rather, it conveys the terror and immediacy of an unsettling time for women and men alike. Celebrating the passionate activists, Suffragette is an urgent and compelling film – made by British women, about British women. Carey Mulligan (Far From the Madding Crowd) is transfixing in the central role, bringing vulnerability and strength to a character whose story is both heartbreaking and inspirational.

Carol
Carol 15 Fri 8 – Sun 17 Jan Dir: Todd Haynes US 2015 119mins Cast: Rooney Mara, Cate Blanchett, Kyle Chandler Todd Haynes’s Carol is a deeply romantic, emotionally honest love story about two women who courageously defied the suffocating conformities of mid-century America. The film is based on Patricia Highsmith’s groundbreaking novel The Price of Salt, which was written and published in 1952 at a time when its subject was considered scandalous. “CATE BLANCHETT’S STURDILY TREMULOUS PERFORMANCE AS A SOCIETY WOMAN WITH EVERYTHING TO LOSE BRILLIANTLY CAPTURES THE THRILLS, TEARS AND FEARS OF FORBIDDEN LOVE.”
The Guardian 04
Based on Nathaniel Philbrick’s bestseller and the true story that inspired Moby Dick, In The Heart of the Sea is a seafaring epic. The film follows the crew of the Essex, a whaling ship that set sail in 1820, unaware of the violent natural forces they would encounter. What follows is an astonishing tale of human endurance in the most extreme of circumstances. Ron Howard (The Da Vinci Code and A Beautiful Mind) directs Chris Hemsworth (Thor) and Cillian Murphy (Inception) in their fight for survival.

Fri 22 – Fri 29 Jan & Sun 31 Jan Dir: Tom Hooper UK/Germany/US 2015 120mins Cast: Eddie Redmayne, Alicia Vikander, Ben Whishaw, Matthias Schoenaerts
Lily Tomlin stars in Paul Weitz’s (About A Boy) new comedy about three generations of women and how they interact with each other.

Elle (Tomlin) is a sharp-tongued, foul-mouthed poet in her 70s. Still reeling from the death of her long-time partner Violet, and in the process of breaking up with much younger new girlfriend Olivia, Elle’s defences are at an all-time high. When her granddaughter turns up needing help, the pair embark on a road trip through LA.
Oscar winner Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech) handles the characters’ emotional trials with extraordinary delicacy. Redmayne arguably gives the greatest performance of his career, following an Oscar winning turn as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything. 05

Sat 30 Jan 11am – 3pm
Sat 13 Feb 11am – 3pm
Ginette Vincendeau considers the extraordinary career of Catherine Deneuve
Patricia Highsmith (1921-1995) was one of the greatest crime and suspense writers of the 20th century. Her novels from Strangers on The Train, This Sweet Sickness and Carol through to her Ripley novels, were critically and commercially acclaimed. Her work also inspired major filmmakers past and present from Hitchcock to Todd Haynes.
War is hell, but also big entertainment. America’s wars provide the perfect setting for courageous heroes to battle the evil enemies of freedom. But where is the line between popcorn fantasy and political propaganda?
Adrian Wootton CEO of Film London, explores Highsmith’s colourful life, her extraordinary career and the films of her stories with slides and film clips. The event includes a complete screening of Ripley’s Game, with John Malkovich as the devious and brilliant deceiver Tom Ripley.

Three Hearts
Georg Löfflmann, visiting professor in Politics will take a closer look at the political role of Hollywood - from Sands of Iwo Jima to Independence Day and Star Wars - and how films shape our perception of violent conflict. The presentation includes a complete screening of Paul Greengrass’s Green Zone (2010) starring Matt Damon.
Sat 5 Mar 11am – 3pm From her early starring roles as blond ingénue in Jacques Demy’s 1960s musicals, Catherine Deneuve forged a unique career as the star of international art cinema. Now in her 70s, she shows no sign of slowing down, stepping gracefully into roles of strong, active older women, as in the recent successful art films Three Hearts and Standing Tall. This illustrated presentation discusses the various incarnations of Catherine Deneuve and asks what the secret of such longevity on screen is. Includes a preview screening of her latest film Three Hearts in which she stars with her real life daughter, Chiara Mastroiann and Charlotte Gainsbourg.
