Jodi Piccoult's novel My Sister's Keeper is brought to the screen and in The Private Lives of Pippa Lee Robin Wright Penn gives a spellbinding performance of the eponymous heroine with lustrous support from the likes of Alan Arkin, Julianne Moore, Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder. The production team that delighted us with Little Miss Sunshine has taken on an equally unlikely scenario and produced another little wonder in Sunshine Cleaning in which Emily Blunt (The Young Victoria) and Amy Adams (Doubt, Miss Pettigrew) put a positive shine on terrible events.

For Hardeep, Rashmi and Atul, terrible events appear to revolve around their family, thus Meera Syal, Nitin Ganatra and Zubin Varla try to sort out the consequences of their mother's death in a comedy that will make you wince with recognition as much as it makes you laugh in Mad, Sad & Bad. Losey’s adaptation of LP Hartley’s novel is one of his more impressive later works. Together with screenwriter Harold Pinter, he creates another of his depictions of the destructive side of the English class system, as a love affair between the daughter of an affluent country family and a local farmer is tragically thwarted by prejudice and convention. Seen through the eyes of a young boy who acts as the instrument for the couple’s assignations, the affair becomes the nexus for all the repression and unspoken manipulations brewing under the polite façade of an apparently civilised society.
Jacques Mesrine, last of the great French gangsters, was declared Public Enemy Number One during his lifetime. He regularly finished atop the list of newsmakers in opinion polls. His spectacular death, shot full of holes by police at close range in the middle of Paris, put the crowning touch on his legend. Thirty years after his demise in 1979, the myth of Jacques Mesrine is very much alive.
Featuring a career defining performance by Vincent Cassel (Eastern Promises and Ocean's Thirteen), Gerard Depardieu, Mathieu Amalric (Diving Bell and the Butterfly) and Ludvine Sagnier (Swimming Pool), the film follows the incredible series of hold-ups, prison breaks and kidnappings throughout the 70s and 80s and across several continents.
This, the first installment of the two-part biopic devoted to him, is a whirlwind introduction to the charismatic career criminal who became a household name in France.
The second installment of this biopic will arrive at Warwick Arts Centre in September.
