HELLO If you were putting together your fantasy music festival, the chances are that it would include John Lennon, Brian Wilson, Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse and The Who. All of these feature in the summer film programme: Lennon as the catalyst for Al Pacino’s ageing rocker, Danny Collins; Love and Mercy - the Brian Wilson biopic, with engaging performances from Paul Dano and John Cusack as Wilson young and old. Following that is the documentary of Lambert and Stamp, who took a promising beat combo and turned them into The Who. Home video and newsreel allows Frances Cobain to tell the tale of her father Kurt Cobain and Asif Kapadia follows up his documentary Senna with a revealing account of the life of Amy Winehouse. Mike Leigh Weekend: Mike will introduce his favourite film Les 400 Coups, and there’s another chance to see Mr Turner and The Pirates of Penzance. Celebrating Orson Welles, another cinema great, with a season of new prints of his films including his memorable performance as Harry Lime in the Third Man and as lead and director in Chimes at Midnight, his take on Falstaff, not seen on the big screen for decades. Among the new releases, Ian McKellen’s Mr Holmes is a reflective and distracted detective trying to set the record of his life straight, Gemma Bovery is a delicious summer cocktail of Anglo-French romance of life imitating art... almost. True Story is a game of journalistic cat and mouse with a devious James Franco venturing into Silence of the Lambs territory. Slow West is a western with a difference: Michael Fassbender as a hired gun in a violent and unexpectedly funny tale of the West.

Bill Condon and Ian McKellen last worked together on the Oscarwinning Gods and Monsters. Their latest film posits a fascinating idea: what if Holmes was a real person? It finds the celebrated detective - played with raspy charm by McKellen - in his autumnal years, troubled by a few remaining mysteries and his deteriorating memory. A beautifully mannered, gently moving and thoughtful film that offers a delightful final twist on the story of the world’s most famous detective.
Awaiting a blind date, Miranda (Pike), a small town nurse, is brutally attacked. When the assailant is arrested and jailed Miranda is left to pick up the pieces with the help of her father (Nolte).

From the writers of Crazy Stupid Love and Tangled comes a humorous glimpse into life as an ageing rock star. Al Pacino plays the protagonist whose discovery of a letter from John Lennon finds him questioning the course he has taken in life so far.
Based on Lisa Genova’s novel, Moore delivers an award-winning performance as Alice, slowly revealing the gradual erosion of memory and loss of confidence that comes with her cruel decline. “IT TOUCHES DEEP AND AFFIRMS LIFE.”

The 400 Blows
Before Monet and Renoir there was Turner, one of the greatest of all English painters. J.M.W. Turner was in love with light and what it could do to buildings and cities, to the sea and ships, to the mountains and the countryside. Mike Leigh, focusing on the artist as a middle aged man, finds a strange, anti-social mumbler, far more comfortable with his paint and canvas, than social niceties demanded by the era.

She’s Funny That Way
The film centres around call-girlturned Broadway thespian Imogen Poots (A Late Quartet) and follows the recurring intersection between these two facets of her life and the many men that appear infatuated with her. Peter Bogdanovich’s love letter to the type of freewheeling sex comedy that was staple Hollywood fare in years gone by is a real pleasure, blessed with a series of smart and knowing performances and driven by a frothy sense of mainstream fun.

Fri 24 – Mon 27, Wed 29 & Thu 30 Jul Dir: François Girard US 2014 103mins Cast: Dustin Hoffman, Kevin McHale, Josh Lucas, Eddie Izzard, Garrett Wareing
This often comic, off-kilter revisionist western follows Jay, a naive young man (Smit-McPhee) stumbling across late 1800s America in search of his sweetheart. With his Walden-esque guide to surviving the Canadian frontier, Jay takes a rational but ineffective approach to navigating the travails of his romantic quest. Luckily for him, along the way he meets bounty hunter Silas (Fassbender) who proceeds, for a few silver dollars, to ride shotgun, protecting his young companion from all manner of horrifying scrapes. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance Film Festival.
Stet (Wareing) is an angry elevenyear-old who can sing like an angel. Left an orphan after his mother is killed in a car accident, Stet ends up in an East Coast musical boarding school, far removed from his traditional Texan upbringing. It’s the schools Choirmaster (Hoffman) who sees great potential in the young boy and encourages him to put his soul into his music. Never missing a chance to show off his film’s lovely, often unexpectedly challenging choral arrangements, Girard lets the purity of the boys’ singing linger in the background, a beatific echo even in dialogue scenes.

Sat 8 & Sun 9 Aug Dir: Kenneth Branagh UK 2014 113mins Cast: Lily James, Hayley Atwell, Helena Bonham Carter, Cate Blanchett
Few musical acts are as widely loved as The Beach Boys. Bill Pohlad directs an intimate biopic looking into the life of singersongwriter Brian Wilson and how he shaped the sound of American popular music in the 1960s. Pohlad intercuts between two key periods of Wilson’s life, producing Pet Sounds in 1960 and recovering his health in the 1980s, leading to a remarkable solo resurgence. “EXTRAORDINARY, EVEN VISIONARY”
The Washington Post
Cinderella is a delightfully clear-eyed adaptation of Charles Perrault’s fable of goodness triumphing over adversity, which brings psychological depth to characters like Cate Blanchett’s magnificent, believable stepmother, and even provides a little geopolitical context for the story’s fantasy kingdom, without forfeiting the magic – both supernatural and romantic – that has made Cinderella such an enduringly necessary tale for generation after generation.
