Stephen Frears directs Meryl Streep in this true story of the New York heiress who believed, incorrectly, that she could sing. As she pursues her dreams of opera stardom with a comically bad voice, manager Hugh Grant must protect her from reality.

Following Boyhood, Richard Linklater returns with his most feel-good work since Dazed and Confused. In this nostalgic “spiritual squeal” comedy hit, a group of baseball players in 1980 are navigating their way through beers, pranks and bonding before term starts.

But when she decides to perform publically at Carnegie Hall in 1944, he faces his greatest challenge yet. “A FIZZY, FUNNY, PERIOD DRAMEDY WITH TOP-NOTCH PERFORMANCES.” Empire

Wed 13 & Thu 14 Jul Dir: Shane Black USA 2016 116mins Cast: Russell Crowe, Ryan Gosling, Angourie Rice

Fri 15 & Sat 16 Jul Dir: Gavin Hood UK 2015 102mins Cast: Helen Mirren, Aaron Paul, Alan Rickman

Academy Award winner Helen Mirren stars alongside Alan Rickman, Iain Glen and Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul in this thriller about a terrorist-targeting drone mission that escalates when a civilian girl enters the kill zone. A fascinating and relevant portrait of the moral dilemmas faced in modern military control rooms where critical decisions are made.

However, their investigation takes a dark turn and the pair soon find themselves wading through an alarming body count in this acerbically written comedy thriller. “SHANE BLACK TAKES ONE OF THE MOST SINISTER MOVIE GENRES OF THEM ALL – FILM NOIR – AND SHAKES IT INTO SIDECLUTCHING COMEDY.” The Telegraph

Tale of Tales

Inspired by the seventeenth-century Neapolitan fairytales of Giambattista Basile and drawing from a varied palette of influences, Gomorrah director Matteo weaves realistic and fantastical elements together into three different storylines, one of which involves Salma Hayek eating the heart of a giant beast. Deliriously inventive with an outrageous and twisted beauty, Tale of Tales is a riot of gothic fantasy, with a triumphantly unique vision of cinema at its macabre heart.

Fri 12 – Thu 18 Aug Dir: Paul Greengrass USA 2016 TIME TBC Cast: Matt Damon, Alicia Vikander, Julia Stiles, Tommy Lee Jones, Vincent Cassel

Fri 19 – Mon 22 Aug Dir: Whit Stillman USA 2016 93mins Cast: Kate Beckinsale, Chloë Sevigny, Jemma Redgrave, Stephen Fry

Eight years have passed since we last saw Jason Bourne in action. Matt Damon returns to his most iconic role as the CIA’s greatest lethal former operative in this action spy thriller. Now fully remembering who he is, Nicky Parsons (Julia Stiles) helps him to understand what actually happened.

Whit Stillman (Metropolitan) adapts an unpublished 18th century Jane Austen novella starring Kate Beckinsale and Chloë Sevigny. Remaining faithful to the tone and tenor of his source material, Love & Friendship is a refined and very witty comedy of manners. Stillman’s script is filled with sharp wit, much of it deployed superbly straight-faced by Beckinsale’s Lady Susan and a charming and relatable look at a multitude of romantic entanglements. 09

Set in the final hours before a nuclear war threatens to wipe out humanity, Alexander, surrounded by his family and friends as they descend into fear and turmoil, makes a deal with God: he will sacrifice all he holds dear to avoid the impending apocalypse.

Psychologist Kris Kelvin arrives at the planet Solaris to study the oceanic lifeform that covers its surface, only to discover that it is capable of recreating repressed memories. Taunted by illusions of his long-lost wife, Kris must choose whether to cling to reality or submit to the planet’s influence. Tarkovsky’s adaptation of Stanislaw Lem’s sci-fi novel has influenced countless filmmakers and brought a new humanity and artistic sensitivity to the genre.

Tarkovsky’s final film is a visually breath-taking meditation on existential terror and a melancholic swansong from one of cinema’s true auteurs.
