WarwickArtsCentre

WELCOME There is a hatful of exciting new British cinema coming to Warwick Arts Centre this season. I have been waiting to programme Lone Scherfig’s affectionate and beautifully observed Their Finest for over six months. Gemma Arterton brings the perfect balance of feminine charm and steely determination whilst Bill Nighy is having a whale of a time as a wartime thespian. Roger Michell, director of Notting Hill, returns with a new adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s My Cousin Rachel and Stephen Fry’s acerbic comedy The Hippopotamus assembles a cast of stalwart, tongue-in-cheek Brits. Fresh voices are found in Lady Macbeth, in which rising star, Florence Pugh, plays a vengeful young woman forced into marriage in rural England, and Mad to be Normal, portrait of the unconventional 1960’s psychiatrist R.D.Laing, is imbued with energy and passion by David Tennant. There are three outstanding films from East Asia in this programme. Park Chan-wook’s The Handmaiden is a ravishingly beautiful adaptation of Sarah Waters’ Fingersmith, moved to Japanese occupied Korea in World War II. You will not see a more stunning or sensual movie this year. Xiaogang Feng’s I am not Madame Bovary is an extraordinary tale of a peasant woman who takes on a corrupt administration in China, with unique methods of framing and subtitles in both English and Mandarin. From Japan is the incomparable Hirokazu Kore-eda’s latest film, After the Storm. Nobody gets inside families like him; his stories are simple, quiet and immensely affecting. There is also a new wave of Science Fiction emerging, represented here by Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, full of self-deprecating humour and Ridley Scott’s Alien Covenant, the next in a line of Alien prequels. Ghost in the Shell is one of the most engaging and provocative discussions of artificial intelligence through existentialism, political propaganda and gender representation, and is not to be missed on the big screen. The great thing about cinema at Warwick Arts Centre is that it is so much more reliable than a British summer!

Handsome Devil 15

British Museum presents:

Fri 2 – Mon 5 Jun Dir: François Ozon France/Germany 2016 114mins German/French with subtitles Cast: Pierre Niney, Paula Beer

Mon 5, Wed 7 & Thu 8 Jun Dir: John Butler Ireland 2016 95mins Cast: Fionn O’Shea, Nicholas Galitzine, Andrew Scott

Tue 6 Jun Tickets: £12.50 (£10) Japan UK 2017 90mins

Germany, 1919. Anna (Beer) finds young Frenchman, Adrien (Niney), laying flowers on the grave of her fallen soldier fiancé, Frantz. Upon learning that the young men were friends in their student days in Paris, Anna introduces Adrien to Frantz’s parents, who slowly warm to him.

A music-loving outcast with little interest in sport, Ned (O’Shea), struggles to get on at his rugbyobsessed boarding school. Planning another year of keeping his head down and surviving the bullying that he knows will come, he is surprised to form an unlikely friendship with his new roommate and rugby star, Conor (Galitzine). However, with athletic and artistic pressures mounting, along with the difficulties of subverting school cliques, their friendship is put to the test.

A reimagining of Ernst Lubitsch’s Broken Lullaby, and shot almost entirely in black and white by director Ozon (In the House), the second half removes itself from the source material and switches perspective to Anna as she has to decide between the brutal truth or a kind lie.

A heartwarming and observant coming-of-age film about bravery, loyalty and friendship.

Filmed in Japan and the UK, the film focuses on Hokusai’s work, life and times in the great, bustling metropolis of Edo, modern Tokyo. Hokusai spent his life studying and celebrating our common humanity as well as exploring the natural and spiritual worlds, using the famous volcano Mount Fuji as a protective presence and potential source of immortality. 09
