A Fantastic Woman

WELCOME Hello, In January an audience gathered in our cinema to celebrate the life and work of Ingmar Bergman with Geoff Andrew. We are now able to present the season of films promised at the time, six outstanding films from a prolific and consistently strong career, including The Touch (Fri 27 & Sun 29 Apr), Wild Strawberries, The Seventh Seal and, as a midsummer treat, Smiles of a Summer Night. This is also the 50th anniversary of the riots and revolts which engulfed the world in 1968. Inspired by BFI’s ‘Uprising: The Spirit of ‘68’ season, we welcome a short series of films which distil the spirit of the age, including Michel Hazanavicius’ wickedly funny portrait of Jean-Luc Godard, Redoutable, Lindsay Anderson’s tale of public school revolt, If…, a little known Ken Loach film from 1969, The Big Flame and the Cuban classic, Memories of Underdevelopment. Saoirse Ronan is a commanding presence, not only in the return of Lady Bird but also as the lead of the latest Ian McEwan adaptation, On Chesil Beach. Lily James and Jessica Brown Findlay lead the cast in the search for a lost writer and rebel in The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society, and Rupert Everett excels as writer, director and star of The Happy Prince, an exploration of the latter days of Oscar Wilde, offering more to consider than the quipping fop. Just like the buses, you wait around for months for some new French cinema and then half a dozen come along at once! 120 Beats per Minute, Let the Sunshine In and Custody have been gracing the festival circuit garnering awards and very warm reviews. Double Lover finds François Ozon back to his most mischievous self, and My Golden Days has been received as one of the best teen movies to come out of France. This season’s programme has the energy and diversity of a festival; you can enjoy your own Cannes here in Canley! Bring your own yacht!

Warwick Arts Centre 20:20 is a 3 year project to refresh, renew and redevelop our building to create modern, updated, larger spaces where we can continue our distinctive, creative, artistic and cultural programme. As we embark on Stage 2 of the project this summer, our cinema will be closing for two years in order to commence the new build. We will be building three new cinemas, moving the Mead Gallery to the ground floor; and creating a spacious new-look foyer and restaurant, offering a more welcoming and comfortable environment for our visitors. Warwick Arts Centre will be open throughout – please follow updates on our website regarding digital screenings, outdoor exhibitions and other events happening during the project. We apologise for this disruption – but please bear with us because on re-opening in Autumn 2020 our building and facilities will be fit for the 21st century. Warwick Arts Centre will be fully accessible, environmentally sustainable and a centre for world class cinema, live event transmission, contemporary exhibitions, live performances and much more. We look forward to welcoming you.
