HELLO
FAMILY FILMS Cinema £5.50 (£3.50)
It seems that awards season has started early with at least two key films appearing on UK screens before Christmas. Mr Turner is Mike Leigh’s affectionate but unvarnished biopic of JMW Turner, beautifully and suitably filmed and graced with an award winning performance by Timothy Spall as the artist. It is a performance of subtlety and humour and determination. The other front-runner, at this point, is The Imitation Game, an account of the breaking of the Enigma code by Alan Turing and his team at Bletchley Park. Benedict Cumberbatch plays the brilliant but troubled Turing, and Keira Knightley turns in a revelatory performance as colleague Joan Clarke. This is about both personal and collective struggle and goes some way to righting the record of Turing’s life. Our own eminent visitors include Ken Loach, who comes to talk about his work after a screening of The Spirit of ’45 and Debbie Isitt who will talk about the making of the third part of the Nativity series called Dude, Where’s my Donkey? The other guest for Christmas is Paddington Bear, whose eventful life is portrayed and supported by a galaxy of British acting talent. The UK French Film Festival returns with four new titles that are exclusive to the tour. These include Life of Riley - Alain Resnais’ last film and another adaptation of Alan Ayckbourn, and a beautiful new live action adaptation of family favourite, Belle & Sebastian. If you haven’t already invested in membership of our Film Club, now would be a good time to consider it.

It didn’t take long for Hollywood to get their hands on the smash-hit novel of 2013, but thankfully, it’s fallen into the very capable hands of The Social Network director David Fincher. Ben Affleck is Nick Dunne, a flawed man who nevertheless maintains his innocence when his seemingly perfect wife Amy (Pike) goes missing in suspicious circumstances. “ROSAMUND PIKE DELIVERS A FASCINATINGLY POISED PERFORMANCE” The Guardian “A SUPERB PIECE OF FILMMAKING” The Independent
This excellent British comedy is back by popular demand, recounting the true story of the gay and lesbian activists who threw their support behind the miners’ strike in 1984. Bound by a shared hatred of Thatcher, a group of young gay men and women team up with a remote Welsh mining community to raise money for the cause, and find more support and openness there than they would expect. An uplifting and heartwarming tale. “WARM AND WITTY, WITH TERRIFIC PERFORMANCES”
