Miss You Already

When life falls apart, friends keep it together. Director Catherine Hardwick (Thirteen) directs a tender, gently funny depiction of female friendship. Fri 13 – Wed 18 Nov Dir: Denis Villeneuve US 2015 121mins Some subtitles Cast: Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, Benicio Del Toro

Sarah Gavron (Brick Lane) and writer Abi Morgan (The Iron Lady) aim to reposition the often overlooked story of the earliest women’s movement as a significant part of English history. More than a nostalgic period piece, it conveys the terror and immediacy of an unsettling time for woman and men alike.

Canadian director Denis Villeneuve’s rock-solid thriller stars Emily Blunt as Kate, an idealistic US government agent assigned to a Black Ops team who carry out drug cartel raids across the lawless US/Mexican border area. Led by an enigmatic consultant with a questionable past (Benicio Del Toro), the team sets out on a clandestine journey forcing Kate to question everything that she believes in order to survive.

Carey Mulligan (Far From the Madding Crowd) is transfixing in the central role, bringing vulnerability and strength to a character whose story is both heartbreaking and inspirational.

The Lady in the Van

Spectre

The unlikely, slowly deepening bond between playwright Alan Bennett (Alex Jennings) and a cantankerous, malodorous homeless woman (Maggie Smith) is recreated with warm affection by director Nicholas Hytner. It tells the story of a woman of uncertain origins who ‘temporarily’ parked her van in Bennett’s London driveway and proceeded to live there for 15 years.

There is just one week until Kate Mercer’s 45th wedding anniversary and planning for the party is going well. 45 Years is an elegant and restrained film that explores how an apparently happy union can be tormented by an echo from the past. Andrew Haigh’s follow up to his successful feature Weekend, is delicate, thoughtful and moving; a well-crafted study of the fragility of human relationships in its twilight years.

Birth, Youth, Love and Death – Woody Allen and His Worlds

Shakespeare on Screen – Macbeth with Tony Howard

Alan Bennett in film with Michael Brooke

Sat 7 Nov 11am

Sat 21 Nov 11am

It seems everyone has an opinion on Woody Allen. An intensely private individual, the last 20 years has seen Allen’s personal life overtake a prodigious output that has averaged one film a year. an Haydn Smith will look back over the director’s immense body of work to present a thematic biography of the cinematic Woody Allen – the character we recognise from his performances and on-screen alter-egos.

Michael Fassbender is the latest screen giant to take on the mantle of the Scottish play. Macbeth has fascinated the world’s filmmakers for over a century. As Akira Kurosawa (in Throne of Blood, 1957) and Roman Polanski (in Macbeth, 1971) realised, Macbeth challenges the director to unite brutality and the spiritual. Is it an impossible task?

Alan Bennett made his reputation in the theatre, but went on to become one of Britain’s greatest screenwriters. In this illustrated talk, Michael Brooke, the author of most of BFI Screenonline’s extensive Bennett coverage, will be discussing all the cinema features from A Private Function (1984) to The Lady in the Van (2015), alongside a selection of his TV work for such major directors as Lindsay Anderson, Stephen Frears and John Schlesinger.

The talk will be followed by a screening of the film Allen has often stated is his own favourite, The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985). 10
