But by the 1960s, his career and personal life were in shambles following years of a profound heroin addiction. Creatively blending fact with fiction and driven by Hawke’s tender, virtuoso performance the film unfolds with all the improvisatory genius and stylistic brio of great jazz.

Fri 7 – Tue 11 & Thu 13 – Sun 16 Oct Dir: Sharon Maguire UK 2016 Time TBC Cast: Renée Zellweger, Colin Firth, Patrick Dempsey, Emma Thompson
British filmmaker David MacKenzie, with Sicario writer Taylor Sheridan, produces a heist picture with a satirical edge.
After breaking up with Mark Darcy (Firth), Bridget Jones’s (Zellweger) ‘happily ever after’ hasn’t quite gone according to plan.
Tanner Howard (Foster) is an unrepentant hell raiser who has somehow managed to stay out of jail for a year. Law-abiding Toby Howard (Pine), estranged from his wife and two teen sons, may lose his family ranch if he can’t raise the cash to pay off the mortgage before the bank forecloses it. The brothers team up to quickly and effectively plan a sequence of bank robberies which puts them on a collision course with a West Texas Ranger (Jeff Bridges) determined to take them down.
Fortysomething and single again, she decides to focus on her job as a top news producer and surround herself with old friends and new. For once, Bridget has everything completely under control. What could possibly go wrong?
The film tells the story of Bobby Dorfman (Eisenberg) who arrives in Hollywood during the 1930s hoping to work in the film industry. However, the slightly neurotic east coaster is not a natural fit in Tinsel Town, but his powerhouse uncle Phil (Steve Carell) helps out, giving him a job at his talent agency and introducing him to his beautiful secretary Vonnie (Kristen Stewart). Bobby falls in love, and despite it being unrequited, he finds himself swept up in the vibrant café society that defined the spirit of the age. A comedy tinged with heartbreak, looking at true love and unsatisfactory options with stellar performances by Eisenberg and Stewart. 10

Fri 28 Oct – Thu 3 Nov Dir: Tate Taylor USA 2016 TIME TBC Cast: Emily Blunt, Rebecca Ferguson, Justin Theroux, Lisa Kudrow
From the director of The Hunger Games and Seabiscuit comes this historic action drama based on the fascinating true story of Newton Knight (McConaughey), a simple Mississippi farmer working as a medic for the Confederacy during the Civil War.
Rachel (Blunt) is a divorced, ‘barren’, unhappy and increasingly unhinged alcoholic who fears she’s lost control of everything. Every day Rachel rides the train to work and every day she passes her old house, where her ex now lives with his new family.
Disillusioned by the conflict, which he sees as nothing more than a battle to protect the interests of rich Southerners, Newton deserts his regiment, deciding to oppose the Confederacy’s greed and defend his property against the government’s excessive taxation. His one-man rebellion quickly gains followers.
To distract from the pain caused by happy memories, she fixates on the life of an attractive, ‘perfect’ couple that live a few doors down. One day, as the train passes, she sees something shocking, filling her with rage. The next day, she wakes up with a horrible hangover, various wounds and bruises, and no memory of the night before.
Slaves and local white farmers form an unlikely coalition bonded together by their shared desire to live in freedom.
Tate Taylor, director of award-winning The Help adapts Paula Hawkins’ novel into a psychological thriller reminiscent of Gone Girl. 15
