WELCOME Hello, Peering into my crystal ball, as I do at this time of year, I have a fairly clear idea about the runners and riders of the forthcoming awards’ season. You need not cross my palm with silver, merely explore the current programme. It will take a lot to stop The Shape of Water winning Best Picture: Amélie meets The Creature from the Black Lagoon, it will chill and enchant in equal measure. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri stands a good chance of taking the Best Screenplay prizes as Martin McDonagh takes the acerbic wit and daftness of In Bruges to America. Frances McDormand will lead the Best Actress nominees for her delivery of McDonagh’s script, placing her in direct competition with Sally Hawkins for The Shape of Water.

Battle of the Sexes
The Post has Oscar nominations stamped all over it: Spielberg, Hanks and Streep challenging presidential corruption – in this case, Nixon and the Vietnam War. The ghost of ‘Nam hangs over Last Flag Flying too, with a trio of very fine performances in a funny and insightful drama about the fallout of the Iraq War. And what about Phantom Thread? Surely one of the most anticipated events of the New Year; Paul Thomas Anderson is reunited with Daniel Day-Lewis in what may be his final film. British attention will be focused on Gary Oldman as he embodies Churchill in Darkest Hour, providing the flipside to Nolan’s Dunkirk: while the boys were stranded on the beach, this was the crisis in Westminster. World cinema is well represented with Michael Haneke’s Happy End, Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Takashi Miike’s 100th film, Blade of the Immortal, and Kornél Mundruczó’s dazzling Jupiter’s Moon. Don’t miss some classic favourites, including The Silence of the Lambs, North by North West and A Matter of Life and Death; and Film Talks on Ingmar Bergman and Sidney Lumet.

In an act of rebellion, King launches the Women’s Tennis Association, designed to provide a more equal working environment for female tennis players. As secrets are unveiled through a series of flashbacks, what starts as a civilised get-together descends into sophisticated carnage as the characters reveal themselves layer by layer until the hidden violence at the core of civility is laid bare.
In 1890, Vincent Van Gogh died of complications resulting from a gunshot wound to the stomach. Unsatisfied with the conclusion that it was suicide, Armand Roulin (Booth), a postmaster’s son who sat for Van Gogh portraits, becomes obsessed with finding out the truth and understanding how a man could go from being calm to suicidal in six weeks.

Doc rejects the standard military burial and so the trio take the casket on a bittersweet trip up the East Coast to New Hampshire, coming to terms with the war that continues to shape their lives along the way.
Set in the glamour of 1950s postwar London, renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Day-Lewis) and his sister Cyril (Manville) are at the centre of British fashion, dressing royalty, movie stars and socialites in their distinct style. After Martin Scorsese and Woody Allen, Sidney Lumet is the third great New York filmmaker. If he is less known, his films are not: chronicling the city in Twelve Angry Men, Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon and Network and looking further afield with The Hill, Murder on the Orient Express and Equus. This talk looks at Lumet’s five-decade career, celebrating one of the great actors’ directors and his wide-ranging body of work.
