WELCOME Hello, Peering into my crystal ball, as I do at this time of year, I have a fairly clear idea about the runners and riders of the forthcoming awards’ season. You need not cross my palm with silver, merely explore the current programme. It will take a lot to stop The Shape of Water winning Best Picture: Amélie meets The Creature from the Black Lagoon, it will chill and enchant in equal measure. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri stands a good chance of taking the Best Screenplay prizes as Martin McDonagh takes the acerbic wit and daftness of In Bruges to America. Frances McDormand will lead the Best Actress nominees for her delivery of McDonagh’s script, placing her in direct competition with Sally Hawkins for The Shape of Water.

The Dinner

Battle of the Sexes

The Post has Oscar nominations stamped all over it: Spielberg, Hanks and Streep challenging presidential corruption – in this case, Nixon and the Vietnam War. The ghost of ‘Nam hangs over Last Flag Flying too, with a trio of very fine performances in a funny and insightful drama about the fallout of the Iraq War. And what about Phantom Thread? Surely one of the most anticipated events of the New Year; Paul Thomas Anderson is reunited with Daniel Day-Lewis in what may be his final film. British attention will be focused on Gary Oldman as he embodies Churchill in Darkest Hour, providing the flipside to Nolan’s Dunkirk: while the boys were stranded on the beach, this was the crisis in Westminster. World cinema is well represented with Michael Haneke’s Happy End, Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Takashi Miike’s 100th film, Blade of the Immortal, and Kornél Mundruczó’s dazzling Jupiter’s Moon. Don’t miss some classic favourites, including The Silence of the Lambs, North by North West and A Matter of Life and Death; and Film Talks on Ingmar Bergman and Sidney Lumet.

Battle of the Sexes 12A Tue 2 – Thu 4 Jan Dir: Valerie Faris, Jonathan Dayton USA 2017 121mins Cast: Emma Stone, Steve Carrell, Bill Pullman, Sarah Silverman In the wake of the sexual revolution, Billie Jean King’s (Stone) triumph at the 1972 US Open is overshadowed by the National Tennis League’s decision to refuse equal pay for men and women. In an act of rebellion, King launches the Women’s Tennis Association, designed to provide a more equal working environment for female tennis players. This irks the misogynistic ex-pro Bobby Riggs (Carrell), who challenges her to the ultimate test, a match between the pair that will, in his mind, prove that women are lesser players than men. “A SEDUCTIVELY ENJOYABLE, SMART AND WELL-ACTED FILM.”

Loving Vincent 12A

Tue 2 – Thu 4 Jan Dir: Oren Moverman USA 2017 120mins Cast: Steve Coogan, Laura Linney, Richard Gere, Rebecca Hall

Fri 5 – Sun 7 Jan Dir: Dorota Kobiela, Hugh Welchman UK 2017 95mins Cast: Douglas Booth, Aidan Turner, Helen McCrory, Saoirse Ronan

Paul Lohman (Coogan) and his wife Claire (Linney) go to dinner at a remarkably fancy restaurant with Paul’s relatively-estranged brother Stan (Gere), a high-powered politician, and his wife Katelyn (Hall) to discuss an incident involving their children. As secrets are unveiled through a series of flashbacks, what starts as a civilised get-together descends into sophisticated carnage as the characters reveal themselves layer by layer until the hidden violence at the core of civility is laid bare.

In 1890, Vincent Van Gogh died of complications resulting from a gunshot wound to the stomach. Unsatisfied with the conclusion that it was suicide, Armand Roulin (Booth), a postmaster’s son who sat for Van Gogh portraits, becomes obsessed with finding out the truth and understanding how a man could go from being calm to suicidal in six weeks.

“AN ALL-STAR ACTING MASTERCLASS”

The first feature-length film to be made entirely from oil paintings on canvas, Loving Vincent was made by 125 painters and over 62,000 paintings.

The Silence of the Lambs 15

Fri 12 – Thu 18 Jan Dir: Michael Gracey USA 2017 102mins Cast: Hugh Jackman, Michelle Williams, Zac Efron, Zendaya

Mon 15 & Tue 16 Jan Dir: Johnathan Demme USA 1991 114mins Cast: Jodie Foster, Anthony Hopkins

A bold and original musical that celebrates the birth of show business, The Greatest Showman is inspired by the true story of 1800s pioneer P.T. Barnum (Jackman). Ambitious and imaginative, Barnum harnessed his extraordinary vision to rise from nothing to create the first circus in New York. Mesmerising and sensational, it was not without controversy at a time when such entertainment was considered immoral. Featuring songs from Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (La La Land), this promises to be one of the most magical musicals of the year. Killing of a Sacred Deer

FBI agent Clarice Starling (Foster), a specialist in serial killers, is fresh out of training and on the hunt for psychopath Buffalo Bill. Taking a risk, she uses imprisoned, highly intelligent, psychiatrist Dr Hannibal Lecter (Hopkins) for his insight, but he draws her into his dangerous game. Remastered for the BFI’s Who Can You Trust? season, Jonathan Demme’s award-winning thriller is as unnerving and horrific as ever. “STILL MAKES THE PULSE RACE”
