Fagin’s Twist

The Fear of Fear Death is Certain

directed and choreographed directed by Sarah Meadows by Tony Adigun Wed 3 & Thu 4 Oct 7.45pm Fri 28 & Sat 29 Sep 7.30pm Fagin’s Twist is the untold story of a notorious and complex villain. It imagines Fagin’s youth, driven by greed and ambition in the face of overwhelming poverty. The streets are a place of little comfort and fairy-tale endings are hard to find in this poignant coming-of-age tale. This is Dickens’ Oliver Twist in a new light. Avant Garde Dance flips your expectations of five familiar characters, with their unmatched contemporary hip hop style. 1hr 40mins / Age 8+ Theatre £15 (£13) Students £5, Under 26s £5 Post Show Talk Fri 28 Sep

A mysterious figure haunts an untamed Scottish island. No one is immune to the heightened campaign of fear and terror she pours onto those who cross her path. But what does that fear actually feel like and how did wanting to create a scary ghost story mean I ended up 60 metres underground in a watery cave? The Fear of Fear wrestles with the question of what makes us afraid and why it isn’t always a bad thing. 60mins / Age 12+ Studio £15 (£13) Under 26s £11

Mon 8 & Tue 9 Oct 7pm & 8.45pm Cherries have tender skin, meat and a kind of bone inside them. Their juice is red like blood. When you treat them as humans sometimes treat other humans, then they become human themselves or at least animate objects, which invite you to identify yourself with them. Eva Meyer-Keller has installed sweet cherries as her protagonists. The stalks are removed from the fruit, but they are not washed or stoned. Instead they are being killed. She takes care of this business manually, in a way which turns the everyday into something brutal.

KNEEHIGH AND O-REGION

Fup: A Modern Fable based on the novel by Jim Dodge adapted and directed by Simon Harvey Tue 2 – Fri 5 Oct 7.15pm Sat 6 Oct 2pm & 7.15pm

The Santee family are unconventional, to say the least. 100-year old Grandaddy Jake and his enormous grandson Tiny live life on the fringes, drinking whiskey, building fences, boasting of immortality. But then Fup arrives – an ass-kicking, web-footed, feathery sonofagun. See, Fup is a duck. A very big duck. A very big duck indeed... And she is going to change their world forever. This is a big-hearted, uproarious modern fable about family, love and nature set in a weird and wild Cornwall not so different from the one you know. Featuring live, foot-stomping

music, quacking puppetry and Kneehigh’s infamous eccentricity and charm, Fup: A Modern Fable is a story like no other. “WITH LIVE MUSIC, BIG EARTHY PERFORMANCES AND HEART-MELTING PUPPETRY, THIS COMEDY HAS A JOYOUS, CELEBRATORY FIZZ AND A PIERCING MELANCHOLY” ★★★★ The Times 2hrs 10mins / Age 10+ contains strong language Theatre Tue – Sat 7.15pm £27 (£25), £23 (£21), £19 (£17) Sat 2pm £20 (£18), £18 (£16), £16 (£14) Under 26s £13 Post Show Talk Wed 3 Oct Schools programme available – see p22

OLD STOCK: A Refugee Love Story created by Hannah Moscovitch, Ben Caplan and Christian Barry Tue 9 & Wed 10 Oct 7.30pm OLD STOCK: A Refugee Love Story is a humorously dark folktale woven together with a high-energy concert. This Klezmer-folk music-theatre hybrid is inspired by the true stories of two Jewish Romanian refugees immigrating to Canada in 1908. It’s about how to love after being broken by the horrors of war. It’s about refugees who get out before it’s too late, and those who get out after it’s too late. And it’s about looking into the eyes of God. Award-winning OLD STOCK: A Refugee Love Story thrilled audiences at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2017 and is touring the UK following a hugely successful run in New York and across Canada. “A NOISY TREASURE…RARELY LOSES ITS SENSE OF MADCAP URGENCY” New York Times “DARKLY FUNNY AND MOVING…IT IS HARD TO IMAGINE A MORE APT TIME FOR A PRODUCTION WITH SO CLEAR A MORAL CENTER” The New Yorker 1hr 25mins / Age 14+ (Production includes some swearing and sexual references, plus language describing violent acts) Theatre £23 (£21), £21 (£19), £19 (£17) Under 26s £12 Post Show Talk Tue 9 Oct UK tour funded by the National Lottery through Arts Council England and Canada Council for the Arts, with support from the High Commission of Canada.

All That Fall Wed 17 & Thu 18 Oct 7pm & 9pm Fri 19 Oct 1pm, 4pm & 7pm Sat 20 Oct 2pm, 4pm & 7pm A life of unending misery in a world devoid of God, now that’s funny.

Image: Photograph by Tom Dale

In All That Fall, Samuel Beckett’s first radio play, we encounter Maddy Rooney in her seventies – unsightly, ungainly and unwell – laboriously to-ing and fro-ing between her home and Boghill Station. This is a landscape whose details are drawn from the Foxrock and Leopardstown of Beckett’s youth, but which may now exist solely in Maddy’s mind. All That Fall is a multi-layered composition of voices that can be experienced as a black comedy, a murder mystery, a cryptic literary riddle or a quasi-musical score, but gains from being experienced in Pan Pan’s uniquely atmospheric, theatrically tuned listening chamber, with the audience seated on specially-designed rocking chairs. 1hr 10mins / Age 16+ Studio £18 (£16) Under 26s £13 Post Show Talk Fri 19 Oct after 7pm performance Supported by Culture Ireland as part of GB18: Promoting Irish Arts in Britain

Othello by William Shakespeare Tue 6 – Fri 9 Nov 7.30pm Sat 10 Nov 2pm & 7.30pm Othello is one of Shakespeare’s most startlingly contemporary plays – a masterful depiction of a life torn apart by prejudice. Venice; a Western colonial power employs the newlymarried Othello, a Muslim general, to lead their army against the impending Turkish invasion. The strain of fitting into a society driven by discrimination and fear soon takes its toll. Manipulated by Iago, Othello’s life quickly unravels as he turns on everything he holds dear. Following a critically acclaimed tour and London run, Richard Twyman’s vital production of Othello is brought to the stage by UK Theatre Award winners English Touring Theatre in a co-production with Oxford Playhouse and Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory. “DIRECTOR RICHARD TWYMAN’S RIVETING PRODUCTION EXCELS AT DEPICTING THE RACIAL AND RELIGIOUS TENSIONS UNDERLYING OTHELLO AND DESDEMONA’S PERIL” ★★★★ The Guardian 3hrs / Age 12+ Theatre £25 (£23), £23 (£21), £19 (£17) Under 26s £13 Pre Show Talk Tue 6 Nov Post Show Talk Wed 7 Nov Captioned Performance Fri 9 Nov Touch Tour Sat 10 Nov 12.30pm. DEAD CENTRE (Ireland)

Hamnet Tue 20 – Thu 22 Nov 7.30pm William Shakespeare had one son. He named him Hamnet. Shakespeare then left Stratfordupon-Avon to pursue his theatre career in London, effectively abandoning his family. In 1596, he was told that the boy – then 11 years old – was seriously ill. By the time Shakespeare reached home, Hamnet had died. In 1599, Shakespeare wrote a play called Hamlet. Hamnet is too young to understand Shakespeare. And he is one letter away from being a great man. We are too old to understand Hamnet. How close are we to greatness? We meet in the middle, in a theatre, in purgatory; youth reaching forward to a life it will never know, an audience reaching back to a life it has forgotten.

KLAUS OBERMAIER (Austria)

FACELESS_VOICELESS Fri 16 Nov 7.30pm Keynote speech and public performance Internationally renowned as a ground-breaking digital pioneer, Klaus Obermaier presents his long term artistic research into nonverbal communication with facial and corporeal expressions and paralanguage. His work explores the human body as the interface between the real and the virtual, as an object of constant redefinition and reinvention. FACELESS_VOICELESS creates an immersive environment using performer Barbara Vuzem’s body, 12

Dead Centre, the Dublin-based theatre company responsible for groundbreaking and award-winning productions Lippy and Chekhov’s First Play, recovers the little-known Hamnet from history, placing him centre stage as he pieces together a portrait of his famous father. One of only three UK touring dates this year following an international tour, Warwick Arts Centre brings this very local story – and dazzlingly innovative production – home to Shakespeare country. “OVER THE COURSE OF A BEAUTIFULLY SPRY HOUR YOU CAN ADMIRE THE PERFORMANCE’S BRIGHT SURFACE OR PLUNGE INTO IT FATHOMS DEEP” ★★★★★ Irish Times 60mins / Age 12+ Theatre £17 (£15), £15 (£13) Under 26s £11 Post Show Talk Wed 21 Nov Supported by Culture Ireland as part of GB18: Promoting Irish Arts in Britain.
