Our cover photograph is the second in the series of three images of Warwick Arts Centre audiences and staff taken for our 2016 – 2017 season around the campus of the University of Warwick. The picture was taken on the path leading down to one of our beautiful lakes, which is a haven for local wildlife (did you know that our campus hosts the largest duck population of any UK University?). Featured in the photo is our dedicated Arts Centre bike, which we use to travel around campus spreading the word about our events and activities to staff and students. The two stars of our Spring 2017 cover are David and Jordan. David works at Warwick Business School and his favourite events at Warwick Arts Centre are dance and theatre, with the occasional visit to the Mead Gallery; and 17 year old Jordan, hailing from Birmingham, who comes to events and films with his family. this is an Irish Dance Thu 26 – Sat 28 Jan 7.45pm Irish dance legend (of Riverdance fame) Jean Butler’s new duet, created and performed with Belfast based cellist and composer Neil Martin, further unearths her roots by exposing the often-invisible interplay between dancer and musician in live performance. The piece reveals a dialogue between music and movement, and ultimately, between a man and a woman. “BUTLER AND MARTIN ENGAGE IN AN INTENSE, AFFECTIONATE, SOMETIMES FLIRTATIOUS MUSICAL CONVERSATION. BUTLER IS AN EXTRAORDINARY DANCER, THE ACCENT OF HER DANCING IS DISTINCTLY IRISH. HER FOOTWORK IS LIGHT AND CRISP – SHE SKITTERS ACROSS THE FLOOR, LIKE A BUTTERFLY SKIMMING THE SURFACE OF A LAKE.” The New Yorker 55mins Studio £15 (£13) Under 26s £10 Originally commissioned by Project Arts Centre, Dublin, Danspace Project and Irish Arts Centre Supported by Culture Ireland. My Arm
Early Adventures
Wed 8 & Thu 9 Feb 7.45pm My Arm is the story of a boy who puts one arm above his head and never takes it down. It’s the story of an empty gesture; the confession of a man who has lived for thirty years by the courage of his lack of conviction. Mesmerising, teasing, profound and beautifully written, My Arm tells its story through a combination of live performance, digital film and the animation of everyday objects. These are the only UK dates, so this is a rare chance to see the starting point of Tim Crouch’s award-winning work that encompasses him performing, writing and directing. This work includes ground-breaking plays such as An Oak Tree, The Author and Adler & Gibb. “HILARIOUS, HARROWING AND MADDENING.” ★★★★ Time Out 60mins / Age 14+ Studio £16 (£14) Under 26s £11 T. CHEEK BY JOWL
The Winter’s Tale by William Shakespeare Tue 7 – Fri 10 Mar 7.30pm Sat 11 Mar 2pm & 7.30pm One of Shakespeare's greatest plays, The Winter’s Tale, though written at the same period as The Tempest, smashes all the rules that The Tempest follows. Unity of time, place and action are hurled aside as we range across Europe, from court to country, from high tragedy to low comedy, across a time span of sixteen years. The Winter's Tale tells of a delusional and paranoid king who tears his family apart. But this is the new Shakespeare, after he completed his great tragedies, and the tough struggle for redemption yields flickers of hope. Initial darkness gives way to joy as Time leads the characters to a shattering conclusion... “ONE OF THEATRE’S MOST CUTTING-EDGE COMPANIES” The Times “WHATEVER CHEEK BY JOWL DOES NEXT CONSTITUTES A MAJOR HAPPENING” The Guardian Directed by Declan Donnellan Designed by Nick Ormerod Lighting Designer Judith Greenwood Composer Paddy Cunneen Movement Director Jane Gibson Assistant Movement Director Elizabeth Ballinger Assistant Director Marcus Roche 2hrs 45mins / Age 16+ Theatre £27 (£25), £23 (£22), £19 (£17) Under 26s £13 Produced by Cheek by Jowl in a co-production with the Barbican, London; Les Gémeaux/Sceaux/Scène Nationale; Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg; Piccolo Teatro di Milano – Teatro d’Europa; Chicago Shakespeare Theater; Centro Dramático Nacional, Madrid (INAEM)

Independents’ Day 15
Sat 21 Jan 11am – 3.30pm (including lunch break)
Sat 11 Feb 11am – 3.30pm (including lunch break)
Poland has one of Europe’s stronger film cultures, but there’s surprisingly little argument about its single greatest director, who died last October at the age of 90. Andrzej Wajda’s 65-year career spanned the Stalinist 1950s and the post-Communist 2000s (and in the 1980s he filmed the rise of Solidarity first-hand), but he also turned earlier Polish historical events into unforgettably potent and visually muscular drama. In this heavily illustrated talk, Polish cinema expert Michael Brooke celebrates Wajda’s unique vision.
What is an American Indie? Since the 1980s it has defined a specific style of filmmaking, but does it constitute a genre, a style of filmmaking or even a mode of production outside of the Hollywood studios? In this illustrated talk, Ian Haydn Smith will look back through the history of American cinema since 1960, when John Cassavetes made Shadows, to identify what Indie cinema was, is and might look like in the future.
The day includes a complete screening of Ashes and Diamonds.
The day includes a complete screening of John Sayles’ magnificent Lone Star from 1996.

Walton’s dazzling portrayal of the story of Belshazzar’s Feast will be brought to life with large, powerful symphonic and choral forces. This will be performed alongside Mahler’s ever-popular 1st Symphony. Originally described as a symphonic poem, this spellbinding work challenged the symphonic genre, offering a new kind of symphony which combines the pre-existing musical structure with a new level of imagination and narrative. An Evening of Chamber Music with Nicola Benedetti Fri 27 Jan 7.30pm Ravel Turnage Sierra Brahms
Trio for Piano, Violin and Cello A minor Duo for Cello and Violin Piano Trio Butterflies Remember a Mountain Piano Trio No.1 in B major Op.8
There’s a reason why they call chamber music “the music of friends”. It’s all about musicians coming together as equals, to enjoy and to share the music that the great composers felt was simply too intimate to shout to the world. Like any true artist, Nicola Benedetti loves it – and in her piano trio she teams up with her partner Leonard Elschenbroich and the masterly young Ukrainian pianist Sasha Grynyuk for an evening of private passions and quiet magic. Ravel’s only piano trio is a vision of rapturous poetry and sweet sadness, created in the depths of the Great War, while Brahms’s B major Trio is romance on the grandest of scales: the work of a young composer hopelessly in love.
24
In between, they play a new mini-masterpiece by Arlene Sierra, and the virtuosic Duo created for them by Mark Anthony Turnage – bringing a personal touch to a very special evening of music-making.

Haydn Beethoven Beethoven Mozart
Symphony No.57 Piano Concerto No.2 Romance for Violin & Orchestra Symphony No.40
Director Christopher Monks
Director/Violin Piano
Hans-Peter Hofmann Peter Donohoe
“He's a lion of the keyboard but he's also a poet” writes The Herald Scotland of pianist Peter Donohoe. You won’t need any introduction to this great British pianist, but even so, a chance to hear him bringing all his lifelong mastery to Beethoven is something not to be missed. Savour Donohoe’s experience in the innocence of Beethoven’s youthful Second Concerto – and enjoy, too, the uniquely fresh and spirited playing of the European Union Chamber Orchestra.
Overcome by emotion, a survivor of great and terrible events tells his tale. As he sings of his friend’s betrayal and killing, the ancient tragedy comes startlingly alive: the chorus becomes the angry crowd, and even the listeners are drawn into the story.
City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra Fri 17 Mar 7.30pm Strauss Don Juan Rachmaninov Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini Shostakovich Symphony No.5
Violinist/Director Hans-Peter Hofmann has framed the programme with symphonies that show the more reflective side of Mozart and Haydn at his most playful. He’ll also be starring as soloist himself: in one of Beethoven’s lyrical Romances for Violin and Orchestra.
Conductor Piano
Pre-concert Talk: Woods-Scawen Room 6.15pm £2.50 In conversation with Peter Donohoe.
There couldn’t be a more thrilling way to open this high octane concert from the Midlands’ own world-class symphony orchestra and guest conductor Robert Treviso – the rising American star who took the Bolshoi by storm. He conducts Russian music tonight, too: the evening finishes with Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony.
Robert Trevino Stephen Hough
A flurry of strings, a blaze of trumpets and Richard Strauss’s Don Juan goes off like a rocket.
For many listeners, Bach’s St Matthew Passion has more in common with Greek tragedy than with anything you’ll find in a hymn book, and whatever your own spiritual beliefs it’s quite simply one of the greatest works of art created in any form or on any subject. Everyone should hear it at least once, and there’s no more urgent or immediate way to experience it than in this exquisite performance by Armonico Consort – the critically acclaimed choir and period instrument orchestra that’s built a worldwide reputation for the freshness and drama of its interpretations. “IAN BOSTRIDGE IS THE TENOR EVANGELIST, ELOQUENT, PURE OF TONE, FLUENT AND STRONG IN COMMUNICATING THE IMPORT OF THE NARRATIVE.” ★★★★★ The Telegraph
The stakes are just as high in Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini – a glittering dance with the Devil, with a heart of pure romance. You know it, you love it – but until you’ve heard the phenomenal Stephen Hough play it, believe us: you haven’t heard the half of it! Pre-concert Talk: Woods-Scawen Room 6.15pm £2.50 In conversation with Robert Trevino. 25

COULL QUARTET
Quartet in G minor D173 Quartet in A minor Op.13 Quartet in B flat Op.67
Emotion recollected in tranquillity. When the great Romantics distilled their dreams and longings into the concentrated essence of the string quartet, those feelings only got stronger – and sweeter. Schubert and Mendelssohn wrote exactly the music you’d expect from a pair of teenage geniuses: passionate, impulsive and packed with emotions that they simply couldn’t keep to themselves. Brahms was older and wiser – but his spirit burned just as brightly. Expect musical jokes, quickfire wit, and – above all – deep, tender wisdom and warmth as the Coull Quartet plays his gorgeous Third Quartet. Helen Martin Studio £19.50 (£17.50)
Quartet in E flat K.428 Quartet No 1 in B minor Op.50 Piano Q uintet in F minor Op.34 (with Simon Callaghan, piano)
When you add a piano to a string quartet, something extraordinary happens – something that lets composers unleash their wildest imagination. Johannes Brahms poured all his youthful heartbreak into his mighty Piano Quintet – and with the Coull Quartet’s old friend Simon Callaghan on piano, it won’t just catch fire: it’ll positively blaze. It’s a long way from the spiky, sassy, super-dry vodka martini of a string quartet that Prokofiev wrote in jazz-age America. Or the sublime serenity of Mozart’s great Quartet K.428: the best conversation you’ll ever overhear. But passion is passion, and these very different masterpieces will strike brilliant sparks off each other. Helen Martin Studio £19.50 (£17.50)

In this critically acclaimed production, choreographer Wayne McGregor combines themes from three of Virginia Woolf’s landmark novels – Mrs Dalloway, Orlando and The Waves. British composer Max Richter incorporates a specially commissioned score of electronic and live music.
George Balanchine’s evocation of the sparkle of emeralds, rubies and diamonds is a brilliant ballet classic. The French Romantic music of Fauré provides the impetus for the subtlety and lyricism of Emeralds, while the fire of Rubies comes from Stravinsky and the jazz-age energy of New York. Grandeur and elegance complete the ballet with the splendour of Imperial Russia and the peerless music of Tchaikovsky in Diamonds.

This is a show about optimism and hopefulness and about looking for people and things to look up to. It’s about wanting more from life than it might be up for giving out. It’s about struggling with realising what you are, who you are and what you can’t change about yourself, and about really feeling like an outsider for the first time.
Richard Gadd brings one of the most memorable, genre-busting performances in years with the undoubted hit show of the 2016 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. A stand-up routine that goes to the depths of who he is – and what it means to be a man.
