Knot
The year is 1978. Isolated from the mainland, Eric Valentine and Bernard Humphries have been stationed at Echo Point lighthouse, somewhere off the coast of England. The unlikely strangers have begun to lay down foundations for their odd working relationship when the uncanny occurs. Renowned international choreographer Ben Wright and musician and writer Stuart Warwick collaborate to bring you their most intimate and theatrical production. Point of Echoes is a haunting tale of love, death and monsters, blending the tones of a Wes Anderson movie with the eerie dread of The Twilight Zone. “GIDDY, PENSIVE, VULNERABLE, UNCOMFORTABLE, SENSUAL... Mon 19 & Tue 20 Feb 7.45pm A chance encounter between two acrobats, a frustrated lover and a jilted dreamer. This is the story of two hearts making sense of perfection. The Knot is the invisible string that connects two people. Sometimes strong, sometimes just about to break, it is the complex yet simple bond that we juggle throughout our lives. Knot follows the journey of two individuals through the absurdity, joy and mundanity of making things work. Acrobatics, movement and storytelling combine to expose the hopes we hold for the ideal lover. Performed by circus aces Nikki and JD, Knot was awarded a place at the prestigious CIRCa Festival 2017 in Auch and the 2018 Avignon Festival, France, as part of the Spotlight UK programme.

Ryan is there to see the world, learn a trade, get a life. Training’s complete, combat is a buzz. But on one particular hot and desperate tour of duty, Ryan sees things he can’t talk about, to anyone. And when he returns home, the trouble really begins.
Spanish company Kulunka Teatro present André and Dorine; an old couple who are forced to find ways to remember what once joined them together after the sudden onset of Alzheimer’s disease – a moving story, beautifully told through full masks. In What Does Stuff Do? Bristol-based performer Robin Boon Dale will spend 30 minutes, literally, tripping his way through a part guide, part motivational speech on juggling. Romain Teule’s show, Légende, unpacks the possibilities of language, and plays upon the (mis)interpretation of words, with amusing results.

In a post-apocalyptic world, Hansel and Gretel are barely surviving. When a fateful foraging trip into the forest leads to a trap, they meet a sinister stranger – similarly starved, and with a very particular taste… In these haunted, hungry woods where witches ride, nothing is ever quite what it seems. And even if you escape with your life, just how much of yourself will be left behind, scattered like breadcrumbs on the ground? Perhaps Hansel and Gretel will find out… if the forest does not consume them first. Opera Warwick is excited to present an original English adaption of Humperdinck’s fairy tale opera. Join us. Paavo Järvi Gautier Capuçon
“Play me some village music” said Antonín Dvořák, when he returned to his home, deep in the Czech countryside. “That’s what I like!” And although he went on to conquer the musical world, Dvořák never forgot his humble roots – or lost his ear for a good tune. Tonight, Paavo Järvi and the Philharmonia Orchestra present a complete portrait of this most lovable of composers. We’ll hear him make the world shake, in his grand and stormy Seventh Symphony – the sound of a nation finding its voice. Some say it’s his masterpiece; others might choose his Cello Concerto: music of delirious passion and heart-melting beauty, written by a lifelong romantic a long way from home, and performed here by Gautier Capuçon. Tonight, you’ll get to hear both works, alongside the joyous Carnival Overture, in an ear-tingling explosion of pure, unstoppable fun. Pre-Concert Talk: Helen Martin Studio 6.15pm £2.50 In conversation with a panel of Philharmonia musicians. 14
Conductor Cello
Rory Macdonald Kian Soltani
A cello cries out in sorrow, the woodwinds sigh, and like mist on an autumn river, a quiet melody drifts into the evening sky. Some pieces are classics for a reason, and Elgar’s Cello Concerto is one of those works that touches everyone’s soul – just as Dvořák’s Symphony No.9 From the New World channels a nostalgia that seems to speak to listeners of all times and all nationalities (just don’t mention the Hovis advert!). The hallmark of a true classic is that it always has something new to say, and that’ll certainly be the case when the award-winning young cellist Kian Soltani – whose performance at the 2015 BBC Proms was described by the London Evening Standard as “superlative” – offers his perspective on Elgar’s uniquely British masterpiece. And with Rory Macdonald conducting the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Vaughan Williams’s Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis will open the evening in a vision of timeless beauty. Pre-Concert Talk: Helen Martin Studio 6.15pm £2.50 In conversation with Rory Macdonald.

You can’t have missed the buzz around Valentina Lisitsa, whose 83 million YouTube hits and hundreds of thousands of online fans have made her an internet sensation, and one of the most-watched pianists in musical history. But the real marvel is her playing; when she recorded Rachmaninov’s piano concertos, BBC Music Magazine praised her “genuine Russian-school weightiness and transcendental, glittering runs”. Tonight, she performs Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto, and with the Russian State Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Valery Polyansky, this should be far more than just a Brief Encounter with this best-loved of all Russian concertos! It’s set like a jewel amongst highlights from all three of Tchaikovsky’s great ballets. Enjoy the romance of Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty and of course The Nutcracker, before falling into the arms of Romeo and Juliet: some of the most passionate music Tchaikovsky ever wrote. John Lill
John Lill is the kind of pianist they don’t make any more – a true keyboard lion. But at the centre of his career has been a lifelong engagement with the music of Ludwig van Beethoven. “Beethoven is my leading light” says Lill. “His music transcends emotion. It becomes a pure spiritual experience which awaits us all”. Critics have agreed. The Scotsman said of Lill “His objective is always to serve the composer… Lill plays him with an integrity few can match”. So this recital, in which Lill performs what might just be Beethoven’s four most popular piano sonatas, is practically self-recommending. No matter how familiar this music, from the brilliance of the Waldstein sonata to the grandeur of the Appassionata and the deep romantic poetry of the Moonlight sonata, Lill is certain to have something new – and profound – to say. “GREAT COMEDY” ★★★★ The Telegraph
What A King Cnut: A Life in the Realm of Madness…
The Goose Nest £19
Fri 9 Feb 7.30pm If Suggs’ first smash hit tour My Life Story was about how on Earth he got there, this show is about the surprises that awaited him when he did. Vertigo on the roof of Buckingham Palace. Nearly blowing the closing ceremony of the Olympics. Watching his underpants fall to earth on Bowie’s driveway. Things have gone a smidge surreal since the Madness frontman was a 12 year old on the streets of North London. Constantly expecting that inevitable tap on the shoulder to hear “what are you doing here, sunshine?”, he frequently asks himself “how have I got this far?”. Fame is a tightrope and Suggs has fallen off many times. But for all the near death experiences he takes great solace in the words of the Greek philosopher, Blondie: “the tide is high, but I’m holding on…” Butterworth Hall £29.50

Turning Points: 1960 A decade of musical change Wed 7 Feb 7pm György Ligeti Poème Symphonique – for 100 metronomes (1962) Karlheinz Stockhausen Adieu – for wind quintet (extract; 1966) Pierre Boulez Domaines – for solo clarinet (extract; 1968) Luciano Berio Sequenza VII – for oboe (1969) György Ligeti 10 Pieces – for Wind Quintet (1968) Turning Points explores game-changing composers of the 20th century in new concert experiences. This event takes the 1960s as its focus, and the social and political background that provided the setting for many composers to radically reinvent the possibilities of composition. Presented by Jonathan Cross, the evening includes an illustrated talk featuring footage from the era and musical snippets from London Sinfonietta musicians, including performances of the music of Berio, Boulez, Ligeti and Stockhausen: the influence of whose ground-breaking styles can still be felt today. The evening begins at 7pm in the Mead Gallery with a performance of Ligeti’s radical Poème Symphonique for 100 metronomes, a rarely-performed work which creates a captivating audiovisual experience. Peggy Sue
Juan Martín
Fri 9 Feb 7.45pm
Sat 10 Feb 7.30pm
Indie duo Rosa Slade and Katy Young have toured with the likes of Jack White, Local Natives and Wild Flag and now present a headline show, featuring new single Slow Fade and songs from their upcoming fifth album.
Master of ‘nuevo flamenco’, acoustic guitar virtuoso, Juan Martín plays and introduces his compositions with the forms of the great tradition. His exquisite style is enhanced through minimal amplification to capture his very pure flamenco sound: just Juan and his sublime guitar to lift and transport you to another dimension. ¡Viva el arte!
Borrowing in equal parts from the perfectly constructed pop songs of the 1960s and the understated, noisy guitar experiments of 1990s indie bands such as The Breeders and Blur, Peggy Sue’s new material sees front-women Slade and Young joined by Dan Blackett (Landshapes) on drums and Benjamin Gregory (Grip Tight) on bass, who bring a fresh energy and clarity to the band’s captivating dual vocals.
