WARWICK 2020 A SPACE AS INSPIRING AS THE EVENTS YOU’RE COMING TO SEE… Warwick Arts Centre has a track record of providing a platform for the best, the most challenging and the most entertaining artists from around the world – and long may that continue. The public spaces, gallery and theatres designed in 1974 responded to the architectural trends and visitor expectations of the time. But expectations have changed since the 1970s and we now need Warwick Arts Centre to be an inspiring place that matches the significance of the work that we present and the expectations of our visitors today and into the future.
A CREATIVE CHALLENGE… The Warwick 20:20 Project will transform our public spaces and your experience as a visitor. In Phase 1 we invested in improvements to our Theatre, Studio and backstage facilities. In January 2019 we will launch Phase 2 which will dramatically modernise the building: • Opening up the foyer to create a welcoming and vibrant space for visitors and artists • Providing a more varied food offer in a new restaurant • Enabling us to expand our film programme with 3 new state-of-the-art cinemas • Relocating the Mead Gallery to the ground floor, making it more accessible and more visible. Phase 2 will ensure Warwick Arts Centre remains a ‘must go’ cultural destination for people like you who already know and cherish us, whilst also extending a warm welcome to those whose curiosity we are still to spark. Warwick Arts Centre will stay open and we will continue to programme in the Butterworth Hall, Theatre and Studio because we know how important we are to our visitors. Soon, you’ll have the chance to make your mark on this landmark development as it takes shape. In the new year, we’ll be telling you in more detail about how you can help. We’d love you to be part of it.

Welcome to the Spring 2019 Season at Warwick Arts Centre. This is my third month in post and it’s been wonderful to return to the West Midlands where I was brought up and started my early career. I would like to acknowledge the people who have produced this programme for you. This season has been skilfully developed by our programming team led by Julia Carruthers. My thanks to the whole team. I’m focused on the next stage in the life of Warwick Arts Centre and I am working with all the staff to reimagine the role of this University arts centre in Coventry, the region and beyond – and in particular how we create great experiences for our current and future audiences. We are developing a new artistic vision that we believe will ensure that Warwick Arts Centre is a world-class venue, deeply embedded in its local community; and a leading light in the regional and national arts ecology.

About Time Fri 8 & Sat 9 Feb 7.45pm “What then is time? If no one asks me, I know what it is. If I wish to explain it to him who asks, I do not know” St Augustine. What if time did not really pass or flow? If there was no real difference between the past and the future? If ‘now’ were just a matter of where you happen to be, just like ‘here’? How can we square our day-to-day experience of time with these incredible claims, all of which are made by leading physicists? Theatre, dance, psychology, and philosophy combine in a set of ground-breaking performances that grapple with what it means to exist in a time-bound world. Teresa McCormack (Queen’s University Belfast) and Christoph Hoerl (University of Warwick) join the artists to introduce the ideas. 1hr 45mins / Age 10+ Studio £13 (£11) Supported through funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.

Bells and Spells by Victoria Thierrée Chaplin with Aurélia Thierrée and Jaime Martinez Tue 21 & Wed 22 May 7.30pm There is plenty of humour and a spark of absurdity in Victoria Thierrée Chaplin’s world. In her new show, Aurélia Thierrée gets inside the skin of a kleptomaniac. She finds herself manipulated by the objects she steals, under their influence. These objects belong to a world which has a mind of its own. A coat rack gets up and walks. Chairs and a table slide and slip away, while a wall opens and a pair of dancers emerge. A dress suddenly takes on a life of its own. Here is where the bizarre rubs shoulders with the supernatural: mirages to make you smile and dream. There is no place for logic, reason, or sobriety as we are taken on a journey through hallucinatory lands, libertarian countries and surreal humour. 1hr 10mins / Age 11+ Theatre £30 (£28), £26 (£24), £21 (£19) Under 26s £16

Science Fiction Doctor Atomic Symphony Symphony No.2
Conductor
Kirill Karabits
Kirill Karabits unleashes the full power of the world’s greatest teenagers and until you’ve experienced these 164 players raising the roof of the Butterworth Hall, you don’t know what young musicians can do! The programme is out of this world too – Rick Dior’s Science Fiction is an uproarious salute to the imagination, and John Adams’ Doctor Atomic Symphony reimagines the world-shattering events of his Manhattan Project opera to devastating effect. Meanwhile, some say that Sibelius’s mighty Second Symphony draws its strength from the rivers and forests of his native Finland. Others hear it as the epic drama of a nation awakening to freedom. Hallé Orchestra Fri 1 Feb 7.30pm Wagner Saint-Saëns Berlioz
Lohengrin: Prelude to Act III Piano Concerto No.5 (Egyptian) Symphonie Fantastique
Conductor Piano
Sir Mark Elder Stephen Hough
It’s not hard to work out why Stephen Hough is one of the few living musicians to have been awarded a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship. Chances to hear him play the sparkling Fifth Concerto don’t come around every day, and here he’ll be accompanied by Sir Mark Elder and the Hallé, one of the most dynamic conductor/orchestra partnerships of our time. This is followed by Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, a delirious, psychedelic extravaganza composed by an obsessive young genius in opium-fuelled overdrive. Pre-concert Talk: Helen Martin Studio 6.15pm £2.50 In conversation with Stephen Hough. Box Office 024 7652 4524 | warwickartscentre.co.uk

City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra Wed 13 Feb 7.30pm Rautavaara Cantus Arcticus – Concerto for Birds and Orchestra Sibelius Rakastava (The Lover) Sibelius En Saga Grieg Incidental Music to Peer Gynt (with Soloist Klara Ek & CBSO Chorus) Conductor Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla Peer Gynt is a prankster, an adventurer and a rogue. Everyone knows some of the wonderfully tuneful music that Grieg wrote for him: Morning and In the Hall of the Mountain King are two of the most popular classical favourites of all time. Never one to do anything by halves, Mirga GražinytėTyla will retell the whole story of Peer Gynt, including lots of glorious music that you never usually get to hear! Two dark musical legends by Sibelius help to set the Nordic mood; and we travel far beyond the Arctic Circle with Einojuhani Rautavaara, and a hauntingly beautiful masterpiece in which the birds of Northern Finland actually become the soloists. Pre-concert Talk: Helen Martin Studio 6.15pm £2.50 In conversation with Stephen Maddock OBE, Chief Executive, CBSO.
Carducci Quartet with Emma Johnson Thu 28 Feb 7.30pm Brahms Stephen Johnson Mozart
Clarinet Quintet in B minor Op.15 Clarinet Quintet Clarinet Quintet in A K.581
Clarinet
Emma Johnson
When you add a clarinet to a string quartet, something magical happens – and five players suddenly become a single instrument capable of producing sounds of unmatched tenderness, beauty and warmth. Mozart knew that: his Clarinet Quintet might be the most sensuously beautiful music he ever wrote. Brahms knew it too, and his own Clarinet Quintet is the sound of a genius relaxing and remembering on a golden autumn afternoon. And of course clarinettist Emma Johnson knows it, with her unique presence and personality, she has an unparalleled ability to speak straight to an audience’s heart. Pre-concert Talk: Helen Martin Studio 6.15pm £2.50 In conversation with Emma Johnson and Stephen Johnson (composer). 24
Coull Quartet Of Kings and Sisters Wed 23 Jan 7.15pm Fanny Mendelssohn Quartet in E flat (Hensel) Mozart Quartet in F K.590 Beethoven Quartet in E minor Op.59 No.2 Rasumovsky Fit for a king: Mozart wrote his Quartet K.590 specially to impress the cello-playing King of Prussia – so he made sure that the cello has lots to do! Beethoven wrote his quartet for a Russian count – and Russian folksongs are woven into music that could be by no other composer. Fanny Mendelssohn didn’t get to mingle in such exalted circles, but from the inspiration and eloquence of her romantic Quartet in E flat, you’d never guess. Helen Martin Studio £21 (£19)
Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Thu 14 Mar 7.30pm Sibelius Mozart Tchaikovsky
Karelia Suite Piano Concerto No.22 K.482 Swan Lake Suite
Conductor Piano
Barry Wordsworth Leon McCawley
Tonight the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and veteran ballet maestro Barry Wordsworth devote the whole of the second half of their concert to Swan Lake – a story that continues to capture our imagination. It’ll make a stirring climax to a concert that also includes the Piano Concerto No.22 by Tchaikovsky’s favourite composer, Mozart. Mozart originally played the piano part himself, but believe us, the British pianist Leon McCawley is a lot more than just the next best thing.
ARMONICO CONSORT
Carmina Burana Thu 7 & Fri 8 Mar 7pm Young people from the Armonico Consort Academy Choirs will join the company’s professional singers and orchestra to perform the extraordinary Carmina Burana, made famous most recently by The X Factor, to create a spectacular event Inspired by a large collection of secular poems from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the German composer Carl Orff completed Carmina Burana in 1937 and described it as a “scenic cantata” made of “songs for soloists and choruses, accompanied by instruments and magic images”. Butterworth Hall £20.50 (£16.50)
As for Sibelius’s Karelia Suite; well, you might remember it as the theme from This Week. It’s one of those pieces that you can’t stop humming for days afterwards.
