WELCOME In the final year of our building development, we are bringing a blend of new, thought-provoking and established work to Coventry. We begin the new decade tackling complex issues, forging creative relationships and with welcome return visits from quality companies. We tell powerful stories that hold a mirror to contemporary society and examine the impact of conflict, resilience and climate change on the people involved. We have the UK premiere of Pleasant Island, the story of Nauru, once the richest place on earth and now an asylumprocessing centre and by contrast, in February, Birmingham Royal Ballet make their first of hopefully many visits to Butterworth Hall.
We Found Love in the 80s! Image: Dawinder Bansal
Welcome to the first half of 2020 at Warwick Arts Centre.
We continue to deepen our artistic commitment to local communities in both our visual arts offer and performances. Humans at Work is a new play about Coventry’s industrial past and in June, we bring a new commission by Dawinder Bansal, We Found Love in the 80’s, built on the real-life experiences of Coventry inhabitants. The Good and The Bad, two vast cortex steel dinosaurs created by Jake and Dinos Chapman – are with us until September.
We look forward to welcoming you in 2020. Doreen Foster Director, Warwick Arts Centre
Chineke! Image: Ntando Brown
Our orchestral programme continues with a first visit from Chineke! Europe’s first professional majority black and minority ethnic orchestra and we also continue to host world-class comedy and music so dive in, there’s something for everybody.

THEATRE, DANCE & CIRCUS For Sama Tue 28 Jan 7.30pm A love letter from a young mother to her daughter. The documentary film For Sama tells the story of Waad al-Kateab’s life through five years of the uprising in Aleppo, Syria as she falls in love, gets married and gives birth to Sama, all while cataclysmic conflict rises around her. Her camera captures incredible stories of loss, laughter and survival as Waad wrestles with an impossible choice – whether or not to flee the city to protect her daughter’s life, when leaving means abandoning the struggle for freedom for which she has already sacrificed so much. For Sama was awarded the Prix L’Œil d’Or for Best Documentary at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival and the Grand Jury Award for Best Documentary at the SXSW Film Festival. Come early to experience the Future Aleppo VR experience – details below. 1hr 40mins / Age 18+ Theatre £6 Post Show Talk
Future Aleppo Sun 26 Jan 1 – 7.30pm Mon 27 & Tue 28 Jan 3 – 7pm Future Aleppo is an exhibition and virtual reality (VR) experience based on the inspirational work of Mohammed Kteish. Amongst the gunfire and falling bombs, Mohammed Kteish dreamt of a better future for his city. On the rooftop of his ravaged building, he started turning that dream into reality by visualising and then constructing a cityscape of his own, sourcing whatever materials he could find in the debris to construct a papercraft recreation of the city. This is your opportunity to see an exhibition of Mohammed’s models and, through VR, be guided round Aleppo by him, engaging with the city’s inhabitants and experiencing the city from his perspective. Leamington Spa-based with an international reputation, Motionhouse bring their latest work to a special setting in the Butterworth Hall. WILD creates an urban forest in the everyday of the city. Using the powerful physicality distinctive to Motionhouse and combining dynamic choreography, acrobatic movement and hand-to-hand partnering, WILD is a juxtaposition of the complex relationships in the forest and the more atomised life of humans in the city. WILD explores our disconnect with the natural environment and how, in a world where many of us live in large urban areas, the wild environment is becoming increasingly alien to us. A forest of tall poles enables performance on multiple levels. From the top of the pole, we explore life in the canopy, looking down onto the forest floor – a dangerous world of unknown meetings. 50mins / All ages Butterworth Hall £18 (£16) Under 26s £12 Stay & Play after both performances

Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla Gabriela Montero
A cruel sultan, a beautiful princess and a thousand and one nights of pleasure: Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade might sound like a box of Turkish delight, but make no mistake, it’s one of classical music’s most sensuous treats.
In 2019 Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla made history when she became the first female conductor to be signed by Deutsche Grammophon – the fabled record label of Herbert von Karajan and Claudio Abbado. That came as no surprise here in the Midlands, where her partnership with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra has been creating sparks since 2016: so picture the energy when she teams up with pianist Gabriela Montero – the free-spirited Venezuelan virtuoso whose extraordinary gift for improvisation put creativity back at the heart of classical performance.
Tonight, let the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and its principal associate conductor Alexander Shelley sweep you off your feet: to a world of glittering excess, swashbuckling thrills and sheer, silken seduction, all painted in sumptuous orchestral technicolour. Featuring a Warwick Arts Centre debut for the phenomenal pianist, Mariam Batsashvili.
Bursting with melody, Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto is a white-knuckle ride. Gražinyte-Tyla frames it with a striking modern masterpiece from her native Lithuania, and Brahms’s gorgeous third symphony: music of stormy emotions and quiet secrets that ends with one of the most radiant sunsets in all of Romantic music.

Siberian Symphony Orchestra Wed 22 Apr 7.30pm Rimsky-Korsakov Rachmaninov Tchaikovsky
Russian Easter Festival Overture Piano Concerto No.3 Symphony No.4
Conductor Piano
Dmitry Vasiliev Freddy Kempf
Based in Omsk, the Siberian Symphony Orchestra is one of the world’s most remote orchestras, but is drenched in the great Russian tradition. This is a rare chance to hear it in the West: playing Rimsky-Korsakov’s colourful celebration of the Russian Easter Festival, and joining Britain’s own Freddy Kempf in the towering, typically Russian masterpiece they call the “Everest of piano concertos”.
Image: Freddy Kempf ©Denis Bald
From the moment that its opening fanfares shatter the silence, you can tell that Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony means business. Convinced that Fate itself was out to destroy him, Tchaikovsky poured everything into this shattering symphony. If you want to choose the ideal interpreters for this most Russian of symphonies – well, in the words of the critic and broadcaster, Norman Lebrecht, “The Siberian Symphony Orchestra, conductor Dmitry Vasiliev, play as if their lives depend on it”. Pre-Concert Talk with Freddy Kempf. Woods-Scawen Room 6.15pm £2.50
St Petersburg Symphony Orchestra Thu 21 May 7.30pm Sibelius Tchaikovsky Prokofiev
Finlandia Violin Concerto Romeo and Juliet
It shouldn’t work, but it really does. In Stalin’s Russia, Prokofiev took Romeo and Juliet and without using a single one of Shakespeare’s words, transformed it into a ballet as strong as steel and as tender as young love itself – packed with punchy melodies, dazzling colours, untamed passion and heart-breaking beauty. It’s one of the supreme masterpieces of 20th century music, but believe us: until you’ve heard it played live by a genuine Russian orchestra, you haven’t really heard it at all! St Petersburg Symphony Orchestra is the real thing, and with the distinguished British conductor Ben Palmer on the podium, its impassioned strings, characterful woodwind and fiery brass section will make Prokofiev’s vision spring thrillingly to life. First, though, experience the stirring patriotic struggles of Sibelius’s Finlandia – and hear East meet West, as former BBC Young Musician Jennifer Pike joins the St Petersburgers in Tchaikovsky’s gloriously tuneful Violin Concerto. COULL QUARTET
Beautiful Minds Thu 30 Jan 7.15pm Mozart John Ireland Beethoven
Quartet in D K499 Hoffmeister Quartet No.1 in D minor Quartet in C Op.59 No.3 Razumovsky
No Coull Quartet season would be complete without at least one quartet by the single most natural genius in all of chamber music: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. And at least one by the greatest master of them all: Ludwig van Beethoven, whose third Razumovsky quartet ends in a dazzling blaze of pure energy. In between though, comes a very special passion for this great British ensemble: the understated, deeply English poetry of John Ireland.
Beethoven Tippett Mendelssohn
Quartet Op.18 No.1 in F Quartet No.2 Quartet in E minor Op.44 No.2
Better worlds: Beethoven’s youthful first string quartet is the start of one of the greatest journeys in all music. Michael Tippett wrote his Second Quartet while facing imprisonment for his beliefs: the result positively dances with life and hope. And Mendelssohn’s E minor Quartet is the sound of a romantic genius stretching his wings and starting to soar, ending the season with the promise of a whole new adventure. Porgy and Bess Tosca The Gershwins’ Sung in English with surtitles Sun 2 Feb 3pm
Puccini Sung in Italian with English surtitles Sun 19 Apr 6pm
James Robinson’s stylish production transports audiences to Catfish Row on the Charleston waterfront, vibrant with the music, dancing, emotion and heartbreak of its inhabitants. “If you’re going to stage Gershwin’s opera, this is how,” raved the Guardian when the new production premiered in London. David Robertson conducts a dynamic cast, featuring the sympathetic duo of Eric Owens and Angel Blue in the title roles and an all-star ensemble.
Soprano Anna Netrebko, whom the New York Times hailed as “magnificent” when she made her role debut as Tosca in 2018, returns as Puccini’s explosive diva, back by popular demand. Tenors Najmiddin Mavlyanov and Brian Jagde alternate as the idealistic painter Cavaradossi, and baritones George Gagnidze and Michael Volle complete the opera’s fatal love triangle as the sinister Scarpia. Agrippina Handel Sung in Italian with English surtitles Sun 1 Mar 3pm
Collecting over 30 international accolades, including an Olivier Award and three Tonys on Broadway, Matthew Bourne’s powerful interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece is a passionate and contemporary Swan Lake for our times.

Terribly Funny contains jokes about all kinds of terrible things. Terrible things that might have affected you or people you know and love. But they’re just jokes – they are not the terrible things. Jimmy will be telling jokes to an adult paying audience who’ve got a good idea what’s in store. And there’s no point to the show, save for to make the audience laugh. Having political correctness at a comedy show is like having health and safety at a rodeo. Now you’ve been warned, enjoy the laughs. Butterworth Hall £31.50

Join Sukh as she tries to figure out how to move forward in reverse. From dealing with mental illness to moving back in with her parents, Sukh explores mental health, identity, and living a double life, in a searingly honest look at what happens when life doesn’t go to plan.
Rich Hall’s comedy/music locomotive keeps on rollin’. Ever-evolving, everchanging, Rich’s combination of keen acerbic stand-up combined with spit and sawdust alt-country lyricism is a “win-win” (The Guardian).
Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee for Best Newcomer and winner of the Herald Angel Award returns with a brand new show. A show about the little things, the smallest details, the fixed and distinct aspects that make up what we definitively are, how we expressly think and who we unambiguously love.

The Showing Off Must Go On
Sun 23 Feb 7.45pm In 2019 if you want to be a ‘successful independent woman person’ you better have something to say and you better be wearing a Serious Black Jumper™. “Britain’s funniest woman comic” (Daily Mail) has packed away the sequins (for now), because it’s time to get serious… If pop stars, razors and even sausage rolls can attach themselves to important causes, why can’t Jayde Adams?

Thu 27 Feb 8pm In an age of raging populism, MeToo, identity politics, the end of truth, the collapsing middle ground, peak avocado and £15 gin and tonics, Ardal is terrified of being on the wrong side of history and desperate to prove that his gender, race, age and class don’t necessarily define him. He is forced to saddle his high horse again and ride fearlessly into the culture wars (with a white hankie in his pocket just in case). Does My Mum Loom Big In This?
At Brownies, Lucy thought she’d be prepared for anything as long as she had her emergency 10p for a phone box, and knew how to tie a Fisherman’s Knot. Life turned out to be slightly more complicated than Brown Owl let on.
“It was 24 Jun 2016 and I found myself contemplating a supermarket meal deal. I only wanted a sandwich and I only needed a sandwich but given that I could get a snack and a drink for only 5p more it seemed financially irresponsible not to. I had spent so long pondering the EU Referendum result from the day before that I was now in a massive rush. The lad on the till scanned the first two items no problem but the third item he couldn’t get to scan at all. He tried to scan it one more time, it wouldn’t scan – so he went ‘bip’ himself and chucked it through. And it was at that moment I thought “oh we’ll be alright as a country we will”. And we will be alright.
