WELCOME In the final year of our building development, we are bringing a blend of new, thought-provoking and established work to Coventry. We begin the new decade tackling complex issues, forging creative relationships and with welcome return visits from quality companies. We tell powerful stories that hold a mirror to contemporary society and examine the impact of conflict, resilience and climate change on the people involved. We have the UK premiere of Pleasant Island, the story of Nauru, once the richest place on earth and now an asylumprocessing centre and by contrast, in February, Birmingham Royal Ballet make their first of hopefully many visits to Butterworth Hall.

Welcome to the first half of 2020 at Warwick Arts Centre.

We continue to deepen our artistic commitment to local communities in both our visual arts offer and performances. Humans at Work is a new play about Coventry’s industrial past and in June, we bring a new commission by Dawinder Bansal, We Found Love in the 80’s, built on the real-life experiences of Coventry inhabitants. The Good and The Bad, two vast cortex steel dinosaurs created by Jake and Dinos Chapman – are with us until September.

THEATRE, DANCE & CIRCUS For Sama Tue 28 Jan 7.30pm A love letter from a young mother to her daughter. The documentary film For Sama tells the story of Waad al-Kateab’s life through five years of the uprising in Aleppo, Syria as she falls in love, gets married and gives birth to Sama, all while cataclysmic conflict rises around her. Her camera captures incredible stories of loss, laughter and survival as Waad wrestles with an impossible choice – whether or not to flee the city to protect her daughter’s life, when leaving means abandoning the struggle for freedom for which she has already sacrificed so much. For Sama was awarded the Prix L’Œil d’Or for Best Documentary at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival and the Grand Jury Award for Best Documentary at the SXSW Film Festival. Future Aleppo Sun 26 Jan 1 – 7.30pm Mon 27 & Tue 28 Jan 3 – 7pm Future Aleppo is an exhibition and virtual reality (VR) experience based on the inspirational work of Mohammed Kteish. Amongst the gunfire and falling bombs, Mohammed Kteish dreamt of a better future for his city. On the rooftop of his ravaged building, he started turning that dream into reality by visualising and then constructing a cityscape of his own, sourcing whatever materials he could find in the debris to construct a papercraft recreation of the city. This is your opportunity to see an exhibition of Mohammed’s models and, through VR, be guided round Aleppo by him, engaging with the city’s inhabitants and experiencing the city from his perspective. February’s Café focuses on Coventry resident and acclaimed author George Eliot. Join Martina Hall, producer of BBC Arena documentary Everything is Connected – George Eliot’s Life, Prof. Ruth Livesey (Royal Holloway), artist Redell Olsen and writer Anna Lawrence, to explore what happened when Europe and Middle England’s philosophies and ideas met, resulting in Coventry forming a radical culture of its own.

Set against an arresting visual backdrop of digital projections, this performance combines the song from Varnam, the pièce de résistance of a Bharatanatyam dance repertoire, within an ever-changing, fluid contemporary moment. In this personal and multi-faceted exploration of the Mohamana Varnam, Divya Kasturi begins to unfold a complex relationship to this canonised text.

In March, Dash Arts debate the question, when art sets out to make a social or environmental impact – are we ticking boxes or are we changing the world? We’ll be joined by activists, theatre makers and artists including Sophie Austin and Dr Michele Aaron (University of Warwick) to delve into the challenges of activism through art, and look at the tension between art for art’s sake and art as a means to an end. Best of BE FESTIVAL 2020 Thu 12 Mar 7.45pm “An exhilarating medley of storytelling, dance and physical theatre all in one astounding evening.” Each year, BE FESTIVAL packages three of their favourite shows from their international festival and sends them on a tour of the UK. Hungarian dance-artist Anna Biczók mixes memories, imagination and shifting perspectives to explore the phenomenon of an ‘experience’ in her solo dance lecture Precedents To A Potential Future. The play centres on an ordinary Tuesday that suddenly turns very strange, when a

tear rips the sky over the schoolyard. Not only that, but it starts sucking up pupils and staff and, at the same time, raining down a completely new set of people. Welcome to the last Polish-English wedding before the borders close!

What is it to be wild?

Wesele/Wedding is an immersive one-woman comedy, where you, the audience, play the role of the wedding guests led by a charismatic Mistress of Ceremonies. There’s vodka to get you in the mood for wedding games, disco polo singalongs and stories of love across borders. Inspired by Wyspiańmski’s 1901 play, Wesele holds up a mirror to contemporary British society. It interrogates the role of traditional values and challenges gender and national stereotypes in both Polish and British culture. Please note: This is a participatory show, where the audience will be standing, moving around and sitting on the cushions on the floor at various times. Leamington Spa-based with an international reputation, Motionhouse bring their latest work to a special setting in the Butterworth Hall. WILD creates an urban forest in the everyday of the city. Using the powerful physicality distinctive to Motionhouse and combining dynamic choreography, acrobatic movement and hand-to-hand partnering, WILD is a juxtaposition of the complex relationships in the forest and the more atomised life of humans in the city. WILD explores our disconnect with the natural environment and how, in a world where many of us live in large urban areas, the wild environment is becoming increasingly alien to us. A forest of tall poles enables performance on multiple levels. Jake & Dinos Chapman: The Good and The Bad Walking Through Time An Art and History Trail Until Sep 2020 Open all day, every day of the week FREE Created by Jake and Dinos Chapman, who are among the best-known artists working today, The Good and The Bad are two vast corten steel dinosaurs. They resemble huge children’s model-making kits and appear clumsy and lovable. The Good and The Bad are on loan to the University of Warwick for one year only and form the focus of a new art and history trail leading across the campus. In addition to The Good and The Bad, the trail incorporates a number of new and existing sculptures from the University of Warwick Art Collection and provides some fascinating and at times, gruesome facts, about the history of the site. Details of the new Walking Through Time trail are provided on a beautifully hand-drawn map by the illustrator Helen Cann, which can be collected from Warwick Arts Centre or downloaded from warwickartscentre.co.uk/walking-through-time

Groups & Schools Trails for groups of ten or more can be organised on request. As part of the Walking Through Time Trail, you can choose to enjoy FREE guided tours for groups, EYFS, KS1 or KS2. These tours include hands on creative activities to help inspire imaginations. A cruel sultan, a beautiful princess and a thousand and one nights of pleasure: Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade might sound like a box of Turkish delight, but make no mistake, it’s one of classical music’s most sensuous treats.

In 2019 Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla made history when she became the first female conductor to be signed by Deutsche Grammophon – the fabled record label of Herbert von Karajan and Claudio Abbado. That came as no surprise here in the Midlands, where her partnership with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra has been creating sparks since 2016: so picture the energy when she teams up with pianist Gabriela Montero – the free-spirited Venezuelan virtuoso whose extraordinary gift for improvisation put creativity back at the heart of classical performance.

Tonight, let the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and its principal associate conductor Alexander Shelley sweep you off your feet: to a world of glittering excess, swashbuckling thrills and sheer, silken seduction, all painted in sumptuous orchestral technicolour. Based in Omsk, the Siberian Symphony Orchestra is one of the world’s most remote orchestras, but is drenched in the great Russian tradition. This is a rare chance to hear it in the West: playing Rimsky-Korsakov’s colourful celebration of the Russian Easter Festival, and joining Britain’s own Freddy Kempf in the towering, typically Russian masterpiece they call the “Everest of piano concertos”.

From the moment that its opening fanfares shatter the silence, you can tell that Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony means business. Convinced that Fate itself was out to destroy him, Tchaikovsky poured everything into this shattering symphony. It shouldn’t work, but it really does. In Stalin’s Russia, Prokofiev took Romeo and Juliet and without using a single one of Shakespeare’s words, transformed it into a ballet as strong as steel and as tender as young love itself – packed with punchy melodies, dazzling colours, untamed passion and heart-breaking beauty. It’s one of the supreme masterpieces of 20th century music, but believe us: until you’ve heard it played live by a genuine Russian orchestra, you haven’t really heard it at all! The Chineke! Orchestra makes its debut at Warwick Arts Centre at the start of a relationship that will see the orchestra perform regularly in Coventry and work closely with students and community groups in the area. Chineke! is Europe’s first professional orchestra comprising of a majority of black and minority ethnic musicians. Each of its programmes includes works by composers of BME heritage and this programme opens with Samuel ColeridgeTaylor’s Othello Suite taken from incidental music written for a production of the play in 1911, and including the bewitching Children’s Intermezzo. Tai Murray, a former BBC New Generation Artist is the soloist in Bruch’s ever-popular Violin Concerto and Chineke! celebrate the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth with a performance of his 7th Symphony. At Brownies, Lucy thought she’d be prepared for anything as long as she had her emergency 10p for a phone box, and knew how to tie a Fisherman’s Knot. Life turned out to be slightly more complicated than Brown Owl let on.

“It was 24 Jun 2016 and I found myself contemplating a supermarket meal deal. I only wanted a sandwich and I only needed a sandwich but given that I could get a snack and a drink for only 5p more it seemed financially irresponsible not to. I had spent so long pondering the EU Referendum result from the day before that I was now in a massive rush. The lad on the till scanned the first two items no problem but the third item he couldn’t get to scan at all. He tried to scan it one more time, it wouldn’t scan – so he went ‘bip’ himself and chucked it through. And it was at that moment I thought “oh we’ll be alright as a country we will”. And we will be alright.

Booking fee

We include a booking fee in the published price of all tickets. The booking fee applies to all tickets, whether purchased by phone, online or over the counter (excluding schools, group bookings & Concert Series subscriptions). The fee is £2 on events in the Butterworth Hall and £1 on other events. The sum is invested back into the organisation, helping to maintain the programme, services and activities you experience during your visit to Warwick Arts Centre.

Reservations

We can reserve tickets for four days – tickets not paid for within this time will be released for sale. Tickets must be paid for a minimum of 30 minutes before performance starts.

Exchanging tickets

Tickets are not normally refundable. Tickets can be exchanged for another performance or for a credit voucher valid for 365 days. However you MUST return your original tickets to Box Office at least 24 hours before the performance (14 days for groups of 9+). There is an administration fee of £1 per ticket. Tickets purchased as part of a subscription or package deal cannot be exchanged for credit vouchers. The booking fee is not refunded. Any credit voucher not used after 365 days will be deemed to have lapsed and will go to the Arts Centre Development Fund.

To save time we recommend that you print your tickets at home before you arrive. When booking online, just select ‘Print at Home’ and print the PDF email attachment, bring it with you and show it to a steward to enter the auditorium. Proof of ID may be requested. Warwick Arts Centre is committed to accessibility and aims to remain competitive with ticket prices. Please note that, on occasion, ticket prices are set by external promoters and we have no control over their value. Where we can, we offer a range of discounts. We are especially committed to accessible pricing for young people.

Discounts

For selected events, an allocation of tickets with no booking fee can be purchased at reduced prices for teacher-led school/college groups. ACCESS INFORMATION Although it is not essential, you are advised to book in advance so that we can readily provide assistance. If you require assistance, disabled patrons may also bring a companion FREE of charge. For full and updated access information please see the website or ask for information at Box Office. Registered disabled blue badge holders are entitled to free parking on campus upon display of a blue badge. Disabled parking spaces are available in car park 8 and on Health Centre Road. On designated evenings spaces are reserved for Blue Badge holders behind Senate House, which is located next to Warwick Arts Centre. On busy days, i.e. for Concerts, Parking Stewards are positioned at key drop off points to assist you. Wheelchair access at ground level to Butterworth Hall, Studio, CafĂŠ Bar, Woods-Scawen Room, Box Office and Helen Martin Studio. There is a stair lift to the Theatre and Theatre Bar â&#x20AC;&#x201C; if required please ask for assistance from the Duty Manager. Assistance dogs are welcomed and can be cared for during performances by prior arrangement. Receivers for our Sennheiser infra-red facility are freely available from Box Office. Toilet facilities accessible on the ground level.
