Spring / Summer January – June 2022
R U O Y S T AR CENTRE Warwick Arts Centre has been coming to life throughout the autumn. As the evenings get lighter, we will be screening more top-flight movies, opening our refurbished gallery spaces and, by March, welcoming our new dining facilities. Even more reasons to come on in, bring your family and friends, and make yourself at home. 2
A warm welcome! We’re thrilled to reveal the second season in our transformed home. Over the weeks ahead, you’ll find all the exciting performances, concerts, screenings and events you’d expect from Warwick Arts Centre. There are many unmissable surprises that will both amaze and challenge you, posing questions not just about how you connect and engage with art and performance, but how we relate to the world around us. Among the highlights, I’m especially looking forward to welcoming Black Voices, whose tribute to the late great Nina Simone recalls our winter season theme of Feelings Of Freedom; Warwickshire’s Ellie Gowers, whose voice is truly mesmerising; a rare performance of composer Max Richter’s powerful Voices, inspired by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; and Pleasant Island, which acknowledges the Commonwealth’s more problematic past. Finally, our remodelled Mead Gallery – the largest contemporary art space in the region – reopens with Dappled Light, a unique, must-see exhibition of new work by artist Rana Begum. DOREEN FOSTER

BLACK VOICES
As well as hosting performances that form part of these celebrations, we also use their overarching themes as springboards to explore issues that affect us all. For International Women’s Day 2022, the life and work of Nina Simone provides the inspiration for Warwick Arts Centre’s celebration. Join us on Tue 8 March for No Apologies: a public conversation hosted by Maokwo (see pg 31) discussing how we can challenge the many expectations placed on women. Then we welcome Black Voices, who are honouring Nina Simone’s life, music and activism with Celebrating Nina. Coinciding with the 150th anniversary of the publication of Nuneaton-born author George Eliot’s Middlemarch, the BBC and Warwick Arts Centre have commissioned seven contemporary female writers - Amanda Dalton, Tanika Gupta, Breach Theatre, Debris Stevenson, Sabiha Mank, Leanne Allen and Liz Mytton - to reimagine eight characters from the story, transposing them to the 21st century Midlands. Each writer brings their own distinctive voice to the text, creating new entry points to Middlemarch (a fictitious town generally acknowledged to be based on Coventry) and the work of George Eliot. Their monologues will be broadcast on BBC Radio 3 during February, with live readings premiering at Warwick Arts Centre in May 2022. Funded by Coventry City of Culture Trust

This exhibition has been curated specially for the new Mead Gallery by Cliff Lauson, Senior Curator at the Hayward Gallery, and includes a new largescale work that responds to its architecture. Through a variety of materials and painterly techniques, Rana Begum explores the shifting effects of light as it interacts with her work and the gallery space. The exhibition also includes her first moving image work that captures the fugitive light in a woodland through the changing seasons. FREE ENTRY We are grateful to The Henry Moore Foundation for supporting the commission of a new work for this exhibition.

A TALE OF TWO CITIES Wed 16 Feb – Fri 18 Feb (BSL Interpreted) 7.30pm If you’ve never read Dickens’ 1859 novel of revolution and excessive gestures of love, then this is the show for you. If you have read it, this might also be the show for you, depending on how well you remember it. From the creators of Paradise Lost (lies unopened beside me) and Juliet & Romeo, comes a re-staging of one of the bestselling novels of all time (allegedly). Part dance, part theatre, part fictionalised documentary, no-part costume drama, this is Lost Dog’s nearly unrecognisable retelling of a classic, focused on the central, but underwritten character of Lucie Manette.

LADIES OF LETTERS by Lou Wakefield and Carole Hayman
Tue 7 – Sat 11 Jun 7.30pm Wed & Sat Mat 2.30pm Adapted by Olivier award winner Jonathan Harvey (Coronation Street, Gimme Gimme Gimme) Starring Tessa Peake-Jones (Grantchester, Only Fools and Horses) and Gwyneth Strong (Only Fools and Horses, EastEnders), and directed by Joanna Read.
Irene Spencer and Vera Small, two suburban women in their sixties battle the big issues of the 21st century, from climate change protest and accidental imprisonment, to handy recipes for tasty petit fours and how to get stains out of slacks. They are best frenemies. Using the long lost artform of letter writing, they freely vent their views on their ungrateful children, how to find love at 60, and, on each other. Ladies of Letters is a riotously funny, sharply observant comedy, packed with acidic detail that women navigating ungrateful families and M & S in an unforgiving world know so well. Originally written for BBC Radio 4, running for 13 years, Ladies of Letters also became a hugely popular ITV series. Theatre £32 (£30), £27 (£25) £23 (£21) 2hrs / Age 13+

MAX RICHTER: Voices and Infra
PERFORMED BY THE MAX RICHTER ENSEMBLE Sat 12 Mar 7.30pm Max Richter gives the only British performance this year of his acclaimed new work VOICES and his classic piece INFRA.
INFRA is Max Richter’s musical response to the London 07/07 terror attacks, inspired by T.S Eliot’s poem The Waste Land.
VOICES is a major work created by Max Richter and his artistic partner, Yulia Mahr, featuring text adapted from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Max Richter is best known for his genredefining solo albums including The Blue Notebooks, Memoryhouse and Infra. Other landmark works include Sleep, an eight-hour album described by the composer as “a personal lullaby for a frenetic world - a manifesto for a slower pace of existence”. Richter has created over 50 film and television scores and his music featured in Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island and the Oscar-winning film Arrival, directed by Denis Villeneuve.
At the heart of VOICES is a profound sense of global community, born out of Richter’s view of music as activism and a desire to unite audiences. Described as ‘a place to think’ the piece was a response to our tempestuous political climate and the enduring need for compassion.
