A Young Vic / Wiener Festwochen and Ruhrfestspiele Recklinghausen co-production Co-commissioned by Warwick Arts Centre

Four young people risk everything in a tragic game of love, lust and adultery. Christine, a sweet, young girl from the lower ranks of Viennese society, is rapturously devoted to a handsome young drifter, Fritz, who, whilst falling for her, has previously been involved in an adulterous affair. The play starts with Fritz and his friend, Theo, hosting a wild party at which the romantic Christine and her more realistic friend, Mitzi, are the guests. The air is filled with the promise of orgiastic pleasure. But this pleasure is interrupted by a dark-clad figure who comes to challenge Fritz to a duel… Sweet Nothings captures the power of sexual longing, the cruelty of tradition, and the vulnerability of those in love. Arthur Schnitzler, an acquaintance of Freud, was the chronicler of Vienna in 1900. His La Ronde caused great outrage when first published in 1903 and still creates scandal today.

It provided inspiration for David Hare’s The Blue Room and Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut was based on Schnitzler’s Dream Story. Luc Bondy, is one of Europe’s leading directors, has been director of the Vienna Festival since 2001. Recent work includes Martin Crimp’s Cruel and Tender at the Young Vic, Tosca at the New York Met and Don Carlos at the Royal Opera House. David Harrower’s many plays include the Olivier Award-winning international hit Blackbird. “an exquisite production by Luc Bondy .. which vividly captures the irresponsible hedonism of youth… the performances throughout are as impeccable as the production”  The Guardian “Tom Hughes, looking like a young David Tennant, is excellent as Fritz, skittishly energetic yet also capable of gravity, and Natalie Dormer is a confident and poised Mizi, while Kate Burdette conveys Christine’s unexpected depths” Evening Standard

The Habit of Art a new play by Alan Bennett directed by Nicholas Hytner with Frances de la Tour, Richard Griffiths and Alex Jennings

Thu 22 Apr 6.45pm Cinema: Live screening £10 Sat 24 Apr 7.30pm Theatre: Repeat screening £10 Benjamin Britten, sailing uncomfortably close to the wind with his new opera, Death In Venice, seeks advice from his former collaborator and friend W H Auden. During this imagined meeting, their first for twenty-five years, they are observed and interrupted by, amongst others, their future biographer and a young man from the local bus station.

It looks at the unsettling desires of two difficult men, and at the ethics of biography. It reflects on growing old, on creativity and inspiration and on persisting when all passion’s spent: ultimately, on the habit of art.

Alan Bennett’s new play is as much about the theatre as it is about poetry or music.

“Bennett the maestro returns with a multi-layered masterpiece.”  The Independent

a Bron D oes

It’s summer and school’s out. Five lads act out their dreams and fears in their local playground in Scotland. Their game, known as ‘broncoing’, is fast and dangerous. Broncoing is a sign of manhood – which Decky and his friends all impatiently await. Little do they know how suddenly and abruptly it will be forced upon them this summer…

Multi award-winning Scottish company Grid Iron first toured this boisterous outdoor production in 2000 and again in 2001. A theatrical event unlike any other, and performed by eight actors who are all trained acrobats, this remount celebrates the tenth anniversary of the original Scotsman Fringe First and Stage Award winning production.

Sergeant John Hollis is dead and the gap he left needs to be filled. Stephen McManus is the man for the job, but no-one will believe him. And with the war raging in the skies over Germany, belief is the most powerful defence a young man can have. At a time when life hangs on the most delicate thread of a chance, the slightest breeze can snap the strongest man.

Gin. Skin. Sin. Fun! Set against the backdrop of decaying Vaudeville theatre, La Chiusa’s hit musical takes its audience through death, debauchery, love and lust all in the space of one wild party. Ageing stars Queenie and Burrs invite a miscellany of divas and dreamers for a night they will not forget, a night fuelled by gin, cocaine, seduction and a battle of stage personas to ultimately end in tragedy.

And with the Big City of Berlin the target for tonight, the breeze is really picking up... Looking at themes of family, brotherhood, youth and death, join the crew in this powerful new play presented by Freshblood Theatre as they spend another day waiting, wondering if it will be their last.

Sung by an ensemble of fading performers, drug addicts and wannabes, the show has an astounding soundtrack ranging from effortlessly cool jazz to classic Broadway duets. Ultimately, La Chiusa’s The Wild Party serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the dangers of greed and desire.

The Lady Is Not For Burning Wed 9 – Sat 12 Jun 7.45pm Studio £7 (£6) It is a warm, breezy afternoon in April in the town of Cool Clary. A war-weary soldier, claiming to be the Devil, climbs through the bay windows into the Mayor’s living room and politely demands to be hung for murder… Originally set in the 1400s, this dark, riotous farce moves to 1946. The Lady Is Not For Burning reads as both a challenge and parable for our own time, as well as society after WWII. The language stuns and surprises, accompanied by a surrealist design, fabulous characters and metaphors about love to rival even Shakespeare.

La Chiusa’s The Wild Party

Fri 25 – Mon 28 Jun Warwick Student Arts Festival is back as you’ve never seen it before. Campus will be transformed into a vibrant hub of creative activity; a place to celebrate the end of the academic year, welcome the beginning of summer and witness the impressive artistic talents and cultural diversity of the Warwick student body. A dance theatre work with 4 male dancers and 1 female, it looks at how the human body is essential to, and used in, warfare. 5 SOLDIERS explores the physical training that prepares you for war, as well as the possible effects on the body, and the injury caused by warfare.

“… one of the brightest and most enterprising young choreographers currently at work in the UK. Her choreography is definitely rooted in the body, but it also conveys a sharp, sound sense of the theatrical along with a conceptual savvy.” Donald Hutera, The Times

Featuring Rosie Kay’s trademark intense physicality and athleticism, 5 SOLDIERS weaves a journey of physical transformation, helping us understand how soldiers are made and how war affects them.

5 SOLDIERS is a unique collaboration between award winning choreographer Rosie Kay, art director David Cotterrell and dramaturg Petra Tauscher. It follows an intense period of research where Rosie was attached to 4th Battalion The Rifles and David spent time in Helmand Province with the Joint Forces Medical Group. Echoa

An unexpected dance experience in which we see the dance with our ears.

When two percussionists and two dancer-choreographers wished to create a new piece which questions the delicate relationship between dance and music, they decided to share the scenic space equally. How does a percussionist dance? What is the sound of a dancer’s body?

These four artists attack the stage, not in their habitual roles, but in a desire to profoundly share their similarities and to risk new territories. For each, it is never a question of losing one’s proper identity, but more to discover where the common ground between these two worlds is situated.

Echoa hones the dancer's musicality and highlights the choreography present in music.

“There is magic to be found in this piece as the artists exhibit the totality of their art; polyphonic voice, dance, music and theatre.” La Mareillaise du Var

“Sheer pleasure, offered with intelligence and humour… Whether in English or Spanish, the much-travelled singer’s left-field take on Latin music is quite beautiful.” The Observer

Kevin Jo

His privileged voice, ranging from deep Barry White style to highpitched Hindu, invades every song. Cumbias flamencos, Celtic Sambarera and Hip pop are just a few of the names with which Kevin himself defines the style of his songs. Because he cannot be defined into one specific style, he often likes to define himself as ‘de-genreate’.

ilg rim

Born of Argentine mother and American father, Kevin Johansen deliberately plays with his bilingualism and forces us into his own private world. Fun, deep, playful, smart, thoughtful are just a few of the adjectives that could be used to define his lyrics.

Rokia

Traoré

Two boundary-busting acts, one stage: several worlds collide in the most intriguing tour of the year.

18

Rokia Traoré takes African music to places nobody knew it could go, using rock, jazz and classical as a springboard to adapt and update traditional Malian sounds. Raised in Bamako and Europe, she applies an outsider’s perspective to her music inviting her audience to experience African music’s place in the 21st century. The Sunday Times described her 2008 album, Tchamantché as a ‘beguiling journey across borders’ and named it among the best of the year. Sweet Billy Pilgrim recorded their second album, Twice Born Men, in a shed. Nominated for the Mercury Prize, the result was, according to Uncut, ‘the best album of its kind since Elbow’s The Seldom Seen Kid’.

“…a sublime trio, a band heading for great things.” The Guardian “…world class pianist John Law’s new trio is as melodic, accessible and catchy as anyone in the crowded piano trio sector.” Independent on Sunday

Christy Moore has been singing, writing and collecting songs for most of his life. He has been on the road since 1966, and has made over 30 albums, both solo and with the prestigious bands Moving Hearts and Planxty.

Christy will be accompanied by well known musician and producer Declan Sinnott. “Moore leaves comfortable room for listeners to enter each of his songs and find new parts of themselves – and of the world. It’s a journey well worth taking.”  Rolling Stone

John Law, a classically trained British pianist, moves from Brad Mehldau’s hypnotically grooving lyricism to the rugged funkiness of EST. His series of Art of Sound CDs has been critically acclaimed and his compositions include everything from introspective hushed poised ballads to extrovert rock tunes, displaying both the history of jazz and the contemporary trends in music. The Trio was formed in 2006 and has toured widely with great success.

The Bellows and Resurrection Men

20

Fri 4 Jun 7.45pm Studio £6 (£5) The Bellows are an 8 piece outfit comprising of banjo, mandolin, 2 electric guitars, double bass and thunderous drums. Their trumpet fanfare and 5 piece vocal harmonies deliver a full theatrical assault. This husband and wife fronted festival favourite tell tales of twisted murder whilst stirring a swampy cauldron of country, punk and Gothic Victoriana, cooking up Cossack style upbeat to wistful melancholy. If you hunger for the dark beauty of Nick Cave’s murder ballads, the poetic chaos of Tom Wait’s bone machine or the world weary woes of Johnny Cash’s rambling characters – this is surely for you.

Formed recently from the shattered pieces of various other local bands, Resurrection Men have been securing a place in the Coventry music scene over the last year. Eschewing frills and bells, the band offer gimmick free alternative rock music stretching from Captain Beefheart style strangeness and Cream-esque Blues power to the angular fair you might expect to hear from Fugazi or Battles. This is the sound of the Coen Brothers and Stanley Kubrick if they had made a film without pictures. Along the way this brave and honest band take influence from wherever they find it... and they find it in the strangest of places.

Violin - Richard Gratwick Tenor - Peter Wilman Conductors - Lucy Griffiths, Paul McGrath

Tchaikovsky - Romeo & Juliet Tchaikovsky - Violin Concerto Aaron Copland - Appalachian Spring Samuel Coleridge-Taylor - Hiawatha's Wedding Feast

The University of Warwick Symphony Orchestra presents two of Tchaikovsky's best-loved works; his evocative Overture-Fantasy Romeo and Juliet, and the beautiful Violin Concerto in D major Op.35, performed by concerto competition winner Richard Gratwick. They also paint a musical picture of America with Copland’s Appalachian Spring. Originally a ballet score, the piece tells the story of a pioneer celebration in spring in the

Pennsylvania hills in the early part of the eighteenth-century. In 1898 Elgar described Samuel Coleridge-Taylor as 'far and away the cleverest fellow amongst the young men’. A few weeks later came his triumphant Hiawatha's Wedding Feast, which captivated the public, and established him as one of Britain's outstanding young composers. It is performed in this concert by the University’s Symphony Orchestra and Chorus.

As well as supporting the student ensembles of the university, the Music Centre also runs a programme of professional lunchtime concerts.

This is a comedy with zest, cream and an Italian accent in a new production directed by William Oldroyd with Dominic Wheeler conducting.

James Conway’s production, set in steamy Seville, is an elegant and energetic period costume production of one of the world’s most popular operas. Based on Beaumarchais’ controversial play, Mozart’s opera (sung in English) traces the intrigues of one day at the house of Count Almaviva. Figaro is to marry Susanna (a maid, but also a ‘favourite’ of the Count – and opera’s most charming heroine), but he must overcome every obstacle put in his way by the Count and his cronies, before he can be united finally with his bride.

ETO’s hugely successful production of the Britten/Shakespeare masterpiece returns. In a fairy-haunted wood, lovers’ knots are tangled and strange dreams create monstrous romances. Only in a hilarious play performed by working men are all the opera’s tensions and enchantments eased. James Conway’s production celebrates the best of English music and theatre as Michael Rosewell conducts Britten’s eerie, highly theatrical score.

Warwick Arts Centre has a long and distinguished relationship with City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.

Our inaugural season in the new Butterworth Hall ends with a visit from the distinguished Moscow State Symphony Orchestra.

On this evening we are welcoming them again, led for the first time in the Butterworth Hall by their exciting new Music Director, Andris Nelsons. Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.5 is one of the great orchestral show pieces and it will give you a chance to see why Andris Nelsons’ partnership with City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra is considered to be something special. We also welcome the brilliant German violinist Peter Zimmermann, who will perform Bartók’s Second Violin Concerto, with its ethereal second movement and pulsating finale. T. 6.45pm Pre-Concert Talk

Tchaikovsky’s dramatic Francesca da Rimini opens the concert and is followed by Philip Glass’s thrilling Violin Concerto, performed by Chloë Hanslip, the highly talented young British violinist. This piece is a Classic FM favourite and it is likely you’ll want to hear it again and again. Our finale is Rimsky-Korsakov’s much-loved Scheherazade with its exotic and highly coloured evocation of the Tales of the Arabian Nights and its mesmerising picture of the hero Sinbad, a tempestuous storm at sea and the lovely figure of Scheherazade herself. Ruby had it all – career, dream house, husband, kids – but people soon realised something was wrong when she painted her house the same colour ‘beige’ for the 47th time. There was only one thing for it – send her to the Priory! Told with wit, humour and a lot of heart, this is Ruby at her belting best – when she’s losing it! “Ruby Wax is on razor sharp form. I laughed and I cried. Don’t miss it!” The Sunday Express Join Ruby and Judith for a 20 minute Q&A session after the show. A contribution of all ticket sales will be donated to Comic Relief.

Following his visit in October (so successful that we had to move him from the Studio to the Theatre!), Stewart Francis is bringing his tour de force of a show, Tour de Francis back to Warwick Arts Centre this May and October. So if you missed him last time around, now’s your chance… Lonely, well-endowed, white Canadian male, with dreamy hazel eyes, 6ft. 4 inches, 40+, now living in London. Many interests include sports, cheese, hearing laughter and prompting encores. A Dogging I Will Go

written and performed by Polarbear

An evening of field reports and folk songs regarding lap dancers, cocaine smugglers and perverted ex colonial police men. “Well I’ve dogged me way through Scotland Gone beyond the highland line. And many’s the cloud of midges That’s attacked me bare behind. And a dogging I will go and a dogging I will go.” With a brilliant combination of bizarre ballads, saucy shanties and rattling good yarns, Murray Lachlan Young – one of the UK’s foremost performance poets and a regular fixture on BBC Radio 4’s Saturday Live and BBC resident poet at the Glastonbury Festival – leads us down a deeply amusing road to many strange places.

R E T UR

N

Young combines a heady combination of traditional and contemporary popular art, to create an often hilarious, always unique take on the dark corners of our modern society.

Noah left where he was from and can’t be himself where he ended up. Convinced he had to leave to make his mark, but is that mark attached to a place? ...a world where a lot of things seem the same and where nothing actually is. The girl he left behind. A younger brother he hardly knows. An older brother’s shadow, and the weight of why he left. Incorporating the mechanics of lighting and stunning cinematography alongside the immediacy and freedom of spoken word, RETURN is the story of a man trying to figure out where he fits. Illustrating his attempt to find home, captivating rhythms and patterns of speech create an experience that feels at once like a film and a campfire story - shared and completed in the imaginations of the audience. In this captivating and imaginative piece Polarbear has joined forces with critically acclaimed director Yael Shavit and award-winning new technologies designer Marie Blunck. Together the trio encourage you to explore and, like a film director, be challenged to re-imagine as the story unfolds...

Luke wrote Channel 4’s Alternative Valentine’s Day Message for 2009 entitled The Seven Ages Of Love, which was seen by over a million viewers. He’s extensively toured the UK for six years and co-wrote Who Writes This Crap? (Penguin 2008). “The hard-working heir to John Hegley.” The Guardian

Nothing that is so is so. A stormy night, a shipwreck, some cunning capers and concealments. All of this results in a love tangle to rival no other and a whole heap of mischief and mayhem in Shakespeare’s most captivating comedy. Following the success of last year’s production of Macbeth, Carl Heap returns to the National Theatre to direct their touring production of Twelfth Night especially made for younger audiences. Seven actors play multiple characters and instruments in this engaging and inventive production. Perhaps the best introduction for a child, not only to Shakespeare, but to the transforming magic of theatre itself.

Finding Leaves For Soup

Finding Leaves For Soup is a tale of adventures in a forest… – Mud pies and mucky magic soup – Fairies and flying friendship – Sailing boats and ‘stingies’ – Water and worms. Finding Leaves for Soup uses exclusively words taken from stories created by nursery and reception children. “A captivating, sensitive and thoughtful piece of theatre with the lovely title Finding Leaves for Soup – which is what it was all about… It’s leaves and trees and strange ukulele type instruments for me from now on.” John McGrath, Artistic Director, National Theatre of Wales “I really liked that story. I want it again. I like mud!” Asiya, age 3 “It wasn’t just good, it was funny!” Brychan, age 3

Modern Cautionary Tales For Children II

S o up

Murray Lachlan Young

Featuring all new material – bar the Nine Dead Williams, back by overwhelming popular demand – MCTfC II offers the same mix of rock and roll ‘n’ poetry, stand-up, storytelling and a touch of “shh” panto.

A hilarious and positive route to showing children that poetry can be fun, thought provoking and occasionally quite cool. NB. For maximum enjoyment children (and adults!) are encouraged to bring wigs and pig noses to the performance. Pig noses can be easily made out of egg boxes (suitably painted) and a piece of elastic! “Who’d have thought it. The big bad boy of performance poetry turns out to be one of the greatest children’s entertainers I have ever seen. There is not a patronising nanosecond in this show – children and ‘exchildren’ are treated exactly alike, so children and ‘ex-children’ enjoy it alike. Go on, practice your animal noises and give yourself some fun!”  The Scotsman

Teatro Kismet in association with Warwick Arts Centre

The Mermaid Princess written and directed by Teresa Ludovico inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid

Take off on an inter-planetary adventure! With friendly astronauts as your guide, jump into your space suits and join us as we float up into new and dazzling galaxies. Defying gravity we hold on tight to a comet’s tail and steer deeper and deeper into the glittering night. The silence of space is broken by a symphony of stars chiming a note of welcome to the visitors. This very special performance for 3 – 7 year olds combines beautifully designed environments, performance, live music and poetry to create a magical experience for young children and their families.

Once upon a time, in the depths of the ocean, a mermaid princess was singing, and a young prince was drowning… she saved him… he kissed her… I love you, you love me… The mermaid exchanges her tail and sublime voice for two legs, but the prince, alas, marries another… Enter a dreamlike, watery world of singing mermaids, scary sea monsters, wicked witches and mischievous clowns as Teatro Kismet brings you a dark and delightful retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid. “So visually arresting, so physical and spectacular… the children will never forget…” The Stage (on The Snow Queen)

Breathtaking and bold, this enchanting and hugely entertaining piece of family theatre brilliantly combines the beauty and raw emotion of the fairy tale with earthy humour and magical invention. This stunning production, from the people who last year brought us The Snow Queen, will appeal to children’s sense of wonder and infinite capacity for fun. Taking us back to the original tale, this is an adventure for daring children aged 8 to 80. “Fantastic fish and wonderful witches thrill the audience with a great fairy tale – wildly applauded on opening night.” La Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno (Italy)

Travelling Light and Sixth Sense

Bob The Man on the Moon by Simon Bartram directed by Sally Cookson

Thu 17 Jun 1.30pm, Fri 18 Jun 10.30am & 1.30pm, Sat 19 Jun 11am & 2pm Studio £7.75 (£5.75) Ages: 3+ 50mins Bob has a very special job – he looks after the moon. He knows almost everything there is to know about it. But there’s one thing he’s blissfully unaware of: ALIENS! Travelling Light and Sixth Sense have teamed up to create a funny and delightful new show for young children and families, inspired by the hugely popular, award-winning book by Simon Bartram. Both companies specialise in creating theatre for young audiences. Sally Cookson has a strong reputation internationally for directing funny, moving, absorbing

and inventive productions that connect strongly with very young children. Warwick Arts Centre has been delighted to present many of her productions in the past including Clown, How Cold My Toes, Papa Please Get the Moon for Me and our Studio Christmas show in 2008, the delightful and extremely popular The Ugly Duckling. “Beautifully crafted, wonderfully acted, and quietly enchanting.” Metro (on The Ugly Duckling)

Stories & Fables For Kids Who Like To Sit At Tables Sun 20 Jun 3pm Studio £7.75 (£5.75) Ages: 6+ New stories written and told by a 467 year-old Middle Eastern storyteller (who looks and sounds a lot like awardwinning stand-up comedian Patrick Monahan) for kids aged 5 to 105. It is surely a sign of an accomplished comedian when they can have both adults and children in stitches at the same time. Monahan, through a mixture of wit, slap stick and surrealism manages this feat. Playing the 467 year-old bard, Monahan takes us through the story of Ali the Quiz Master. Ali travels the globe challenging anyone to get one of his questions right.

Through this series of cunning questions, Ali gains a diamond for each wrong answer, and duly gets very rich. Being a fable, Ali’s greed for diamonds obviously leads him into trouble. A genuinely funny show for adults as well as children, which demonstrates Monahan’s wide ranging comic ability. “…playful, infectious, relentlessly affable.” The List “…a likeable comic with incredible verbal fluency, an unstoppable force of nature.” The Guardian

And, not surprisingly, girls have complained to us that boys are having all the fun. So here’s a chance for them to get to grips with challenging contemporary dance too – also making and performing their own work in just one day.

Led by Dave McKenna, Artistic Director of BeingFrank Physical Theatre and artistic lead on our Boys Dancing project.

Led by Kate Mason, Artistic Director and founder of Mobius Dance Theatre.

Five days to make a five-minute film, in a five-person crew. That’s the challenge. From that initial spark, right through to the world premiere, four films will be devised, scripted, storyboarded, rehearsed, shot, edited, soundtracked, mixed and mastered... all in a week – phew! With daily screenings and discussion of some of the very best

short films around, it’ll be hard work, but a guaranteed good time. On Friday, to end the week in true bigscreen style, friends and family are all invited to our cinema for the finished films’ World Premieres. The week will be led by Coventry filmmaker Dom Breadmore who is highly experienced in getting the most creative results from a young cast and crew.

Miguel Palma JAGUAR Sat 1 – Sat 29 May Miguel Palma is a leading Portuguese artist who is fascinated by technology, especially cars, and the way that it affects our lives. He has found a 1963 Jaguar Mark X car in Lisbon with its plate Jaguar Cars Ltd, Coventry, England. Intrigued by the history of this car, Palma is tracing its original journey from Coventry to a dealership in Paris and then to the owner of one of the most famous chocolate factories in France. The exhibition will include Palma’s drawings about cars and technology and archive material from the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Centre in Browns Lane, Coventry, as well as film of the Jaguar’s journey home to Coventry – the ultimate road movie!

Miguel Palma is recognised as one of the most significant artists living in Portugal today and has played a key role in the developing profile of contemporary Portuguese art. He has had a number of substantial exhibitions both in Western Europe and in the US and a major monograph was published about his work in 2005. His work is represented in the main public collections in Portugal and he has been invited to participate in the “warm up residencies” in New York in 2010 which will lead into the Harlem Biennial of 2011.
