We’ll be pitching the Footsbarn tent in Tocil Field, opposite the Arts Centre, for “Sorry!”; recreating a children’s playground in the Quad behind Coventry House for Decky Does A Bronco (pg 10/11) and two of the Mead Gallery’s exhibitions will take you on journeys across campus, opening your eyes to things you may never before have noticed (pg 43).

Finally, with the return of our iconic Koan by Liliane Lijn, back in its natural home outside our front doors, and the landscaping complete, this moment marks the last stage of our Butterworth Hall redevelopment project.

Four young people risk everything in a tragic game of love, lust and adultery. Christine, a sweet, young girl from the lower ranks of Viennese society, is rapturously devoted to a handsome young drifter, Fritz, who, whilst falling for her, has previously been involved in an adulterous affair. The play starts with Fritz and his friend, Theo, hosting a wild party at which the romantic Christine and her more realistic friend, Mitzi, are the guests. The air is filled with the promise of orgiastic pleasure. But this pleasure is interrupted by a dark-clad figure who comes to challenge Fritz to a duel… Sweet Nothings captures the power of sexual longing, the cruelty of tradition, and the vulnerability of those in love. Arthur Schnitzler, an acquaintance of Freud, was the chronicler of Vienna in 1900. His La Ronde caused great outrage when first published in 1903 and still creates scandal today.

It provided inspiration for David Hare’s The Blue Room and Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut was based on Schnitzler’s Dream Story. Luc Bondy, is one of Europe’s leading directors, has been director of the Vienna Festival since 2001. Recent work includes Martin Crimp’s Cruel and Tender at the Young Vic, Tosca at the New York Met and Don Carlos at the Royal Opera House. Interrobang: Regeneration Thu 24 – Sat 26 Jun 11am-11pm FREE (some events may require advance booking) Fierce Interrobangs are mash-ups of performance, experiments, enquiry, workshops, hot drinks, conversation and direct action. Interrobang: Regeneration, curated in partnership with Warwick Arts Centre, takes as its starting point Coventry’s complex history (and future) in relation to destruction and regeneration. It will include a special international edition of Hide&Seek’s Sandpit, an opportunity to meet with other Fierce artists, insight into the cultural regeneration plans for Coventry’s Far Gosford Street and the chance to explore the power of collective audience creativity. Every Interrobang day will be different. You can be there for five minutes or all three days. You may be building something, tearing something down, dashing through the streets in escape of someone. At a time when life hangs on the most delicate thread of a chance, the slightest breeze can snap the strongest man.

Gin. Skin. Sin. Fun! Set against the backdrop of decaying Vaudeville theatre, La Chiusa’s hit musical takes its audience through death, debauchery, love and lust all in the space of one wild party. Ageing stars Queenie and Burrs invite a miscellany of divas and dreamers for a night they will not forget, a night fuelled by gin, cocaine, seduction and a battle of stage personas to ultimately end in tragedy.

And with the Big City of Berlin the target for tonight, the breeze is really picking up... Looking at themes of family, brotherhood, youth and death, join the crew in this powerful new play presented by Freshblood Theatre as they spend another day waiting, wondering if it will be their last.

Sung by an ensemble of fading performers, drug addicts and wannabes, the show has an astounding soundtrack ranging from effortlessly cool jazz to classic Broadway duets. Ultimately, La Chiusa’s The Wild Party serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the dangers of greed and desire.

A war-weary soldier, claiming to be the Devil, climbs through the bay windows into the Mayor’s living room and politely demands to be hung for murder… Originally set in the 1400s, this dark, riotous farce moves to 1946. The Lady Is Not For Burning reads as both a challenge and parable for our own time, as well as society after WWII. The language stuns and surprises, accompanied by a surrealist design, fabulous characters and metaphors about love to rival even Shakespeare.

Fri 25 – Mon 28 Jun Warwick Student Arts Festival is back as you’ve never seen it before. Campus will be transformed into a vibrant hub of creative activity; a place to celebrate the end of the academic year, welcome the beginning of summer and witness the impressive artistic talents and cultural diversity of the Warwick student body. A programme of free events will be held in a variety of venues at the heart of campus, including a specially developed Family Day on Sun 27 Jun. As always, this year will feature exciting and innovative work and never-before-seen collaborations from some of Warwick’s biggest and best societies. Get into the festival spirit... WSAF 2010 is on its way.

A dance theatre work with 4 male dancers and 1 female, it looks at how the human body is essential to, and used in, warfare. 5 SOLDIERS explores the physical training that prepares you for war, as well as the possible effects on the body, and the injury caused by warfare.

Featuring Rosie Kay’s trademark intense physicality and athleticism, 5 SOLDIERS weaves a journey of physical transformation, helping us understand how soldiers are made and how war affects them.

5 SOLDIERS is a unique collaboration between award winning choreographer Rosie Kay, art director David Cotterrell and dramaturg Petra Tauscher. It follows an intense period of research where Rosie was attached to 4th Battalion The Rifles and David spent time in Helmand Province with the Joint Forces Medical Group. The piece has an original sound score by Annie Mahtani and theatre direction from Walter Meierjohann.

An unexpected dance experience in which we see the dance with our ears.

When two percussionists and two dancer-choreographers wished to create a new piece which questions the delicate relationship between dance and music, they decided to share the scenic space equally. How does a percussionist dance? What is the sound of a dancer’s body?

These four artists attack the stage, not in their habitual roles, but in a desire to profoundly share their similarities and to risk new territories. For each, it is never a question of losing one’s proper identity, but more to discover where the common ground between these two worlds is situated.

Echoa hones the dancer's musicality and highlights the choreography present in music.

This performance is created in front of your eyes by an international trio of acclaimed dancers: Jean-Hugues Miredin (FR), Adrian Russi (CH), and Charlie Morrissey (UK). Musician Scott Smith will also play live as part of this score.

A Quartet of Women Internationally renowned dancers Andrea Buckley and Lucia Walker have been brought together especially for this performance along with a third guest, while musician Sylvia Hallett will perform a spontaneous score. Each compelling performance is created in real time - each one highly physical and infused with a rare chemistry and immediacy. Moment by moment the audience become aware that they are witnessing the making of this live event.

Two boundary-busting acts, one stage: several worlds collide in the most intriguing tour of the year.

Rokia Traoré takes African music to places nobody knew it could go, using rock, jazz and classical as a springboard to adapt and update traditional Malian sounds. Raised in Bamako and Europe, she applies an outsider’s perspective to her music inviting her audience to experience African music’s place in the 21st century. The Sunday Times described her 2008 album, Tchamantché as a ‘beguiling journey across borders’ and named it among the best of the year. Sweet Billy Pilgrim recorded their second album, Twice Born Men, in a shed. Nominated for the Mercury Prize, the result was, according to Uncut, ‘the best album of its kind since Elbow’s The Seldom Seen Kid’.

Christy Moore has been singing, writing and collecting songs for most of his life. He has been on the road since 1966, and has made over 30 albums, both solo and with the prestigious bands Moving Hearts and Planxty.

John Law, a classically trained British pianist, moves from Brad Mehldau’s hypnotically grooving lyricism to the rugged funkiness of EST. His series of Art of Sound CDs has been critically acclaimed and his compositions include everything from introspective hushed poised ballads to extrovert rock tunes, displaying both the history of jazz and the contemporary trends in music. The Trio was formed in 2006 and has toured widely with great success.

Krystle Warren hails from Kansas City and learned to play guitar by listening to Rubber Soul and Revolver.

Muntu Valdo’s music is rooted in the blues, mixing African traditions (he was brought up in Cameroon and then France) with striking modernity and technical mastery, building up layers of sounds with loops and samples. He was last at Warwick Arts Centre with Congolese superstars Staff Benda Bilili. His debut album Gods & Devils was described by NME as “a rapturous record that shudders with joy and passion.”

Formed recently from the shattered pieces of various other local bands, Resurrection Men have been securing a place in the Coventry music scene over the last year. Eschewing frills and bells, the band offer gimmick free alternative rock music stretching from Captain Beefheart style strangeness and Cream-esque Blues power to the angular fair you might expect to hear from Fugazi or Battles. This is the sound of the Coen Brothers and Stanley Kubrick if they had made a film without pictures. Along the way this brave and honest band take influence from wherever they find it... and they find it in the strangest of places.

The University of Warwick Symphony Orchestra presents two of Tchaikovsky's best-loved works; his evocative Overture-Fantasy Romeo and Juliet, and the beautiful Violin Concerto in D major Op.35, performed by concerto competition winner Richard Gratwick. They also paint a musical picture of America with Copland’s Appalachian Spring. Originally a ballet score, the piece tells the story of a pioneer celebration in spring in the

Pennsylvania hills in the early part of the eighteenth-century. In 1898 Elgar described Samuel Coleridge-Taylor as 'far and away the cleverest fellow amongst the young men’. A few weeks later came his triumphant Hiawatha's Wedding Feast, which captivated the public, and established him as one of Britain's outstanding young composers. It is performed in this concert by the University’s Symphony Orchestra and Chorus.

As well as supporting the student ensembles of the university, the Music Centre also runs a programme of professional lunchtime concerts.

This is a comedy with zest, cream and an Italian accent in a new production directed by William Oldroyd with Dominic Wheeler conducting.

James Conway’s production, set in steamy Seville, is an elegant and energetic period costume production of one of the world’s most popular operas. Based on Beaumarchais’ controversial play, Mozart’s opera (sung in English) traces the intrigues of one day at the house of Count Almaviva. Figaro is to marry Susanna (a maid, but also a ‘favourite’ of the Count – and opera’s most charming heroine), but he must overcome every obstacle put in his way by the Count and his cronies, before he can be united finally with his bride.

ETO’s hugely successful production of the Britten/Shakespeare masterpiece returns. In a fairy-haunted wood, lovers’ knots are tangled and strange dreams create monstrous romances. Only in a hilarious play performed by working men are all the opera’s tensions and enchantments eased. James Conway’s production celebrates the best of English music and theatre as Michael Rosewell conducts Britten’s eerie, highly theatrical score.

Warwick Arts Centre has a long and distinguished relationship with City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.

Our inaugural season in the new Butterworth Hall ends with a visit from the distinguished Moscow State Symphony Orchestra.

On this evening we are welcoming them again, led for the first time in the Butterworth Hall by their exciting new Music Director, Andris Nelsons. Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.5 is one of the great orchestral show pieces and it will give you a chance to see why Andris Nelsons’ partnership with City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra is considered to be something special. Tchaikovsky’s dramatic Francesca da Rimini opens the concert and is followed by Philip Glass’s thrilling Violin Concerto, performed by Chloë Hanslip, the highly talented young British violinist. short films around, it’ll be hard work, but a guaranteed good time. On Friday, to end the week in true bigscreen style, friends and family are all invited to our cinema for the finished films’ World Premieres. Albert & Friends are back in town this summer with their usual week of fun, frolics and exciting circus skills.

dazzled by the fantastic new skills and colourful costumes in the Circus Showcase performance.

Children will spend the week experimenting with wire walking, trapeze skills, stilt walking, rolling globes and uni-cycling. Alternatively there are the gentler, but equally demanding skills of plate spinning, Diablo and juggling.

Albert & Friends encourages young people of all ages to explore and expand their potential through a unique, fun-filled mixture of circus skills, movement and costume making.

Commissioning new work from regional artists Enable young emerging artists and production companies within our region to create new works – theatre, music, dance or film – that will premiere at Warwick Arts Centre before touring to other venues across the UK.

“From an early age, we used to do a lot of baking in the kitchen, making a mess,” he confesses, chuckling. Citing his mum as a formative influence, Jon left behind the boyhood dream of joining the police force to concentrate on cooking.

Drawing inspiration from his visits to the Caribbean and exploring the hidden treasures of Europe’s largest cities, Jon has worked in the kitchen at major restaurants and hotels including Claridges, and has brought this wealth of experience to the Arts Centre, where he creates dishes within the busy environment of EAT. “What I enjoy is a lot of interaction with the customers,” he beams. “There’s a very regular clientele that comes to EAT, either theatregoers, concert-goers, or people who work on site like academics and students as well. Miguel Palma JAGUAR Sat 1 – Sat 29 May Miguel Palma is a leading Portuguese artist who is fascinated by technology, especially cars, and the way that it affects our lives. He has found a 1963 Jaguar Mark X car in Lisbon with its plate Jaguar Cars Ltd, Coventry, England. Intrigued by the history of this car, Palma is tracing its original journey from Coventry to a dealership in Paris and then to the owner of one of the most famous chocolate factories in France. The exhibition will include Palma’s drawings about cars and technology and archive material from the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Centre in Browns Lane, Coventry, as well as film of the Jaguar’s journey home to Coventry – the ultimate road movie!

Miguel Palma is recognised as one of the most significant artists living in Portugal today and has played a key role in the developing profile of contemporary Portuguese art. He has had a number of substantial exhibitions both in Western Europe and in the US and a major monograph was published about his work in 2005. His work is represented in the main public collections in Portugal and he has been invited to participate in the “warm up residencies” in New York in 2010 which will lead into the Harlem Biennial of 2011. Works from the University Art Collection Sat 1 May – Sat 29 May This is a rare opportunity to see University Art Collection works, new and old, displayed together in a temporary exhibition that shows how artists have explored landscape and ideas about place and journeys. Artists include Mary Fedden, Hamish Fulton, Fay Godwin, Richard Long, Marcel Mouly, Anne Redpath and George Shaw. This exhibition complements From Here To There: Contemporary Work from the Arts Council Collection at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum in Coventry from 22 May - 18 July.

Traverse Me Journeys Jeremy Wood into the Disregarded Like Hamish Fulton and Richard Long, Jeremy Wood makes works of art that are about walks. He uses Global Positioning System (GPS) technology to create drawings across landscapes.

The Mead Gallery has commissioned him to make a map, drawn by walks across campus, that invites the viewer to see a different landscape to that which surrounds them. It questions the possibilities of where they are and inspires a personal reading of their movements and explorations of the campus. Printed maps will be available from the gallery, and GPS users will be able to download their copies.

Jeremy Wood – 2006 Greenwich Park

Sat 29 May – 3 Jul Journeys into the Disregarded will highlight the beauty found in the ordinariness of life. Lorsen Camps will be inviting artists, students and the general public to make short journeys from the University campus discovering precious details of our surroundings that often go unnoticed. Photographs will be taken, poems and prose written, found objects gathered. The resulting work will be exhibited on campus in the Coventry Centre for Contemporary Art, one of Bob and Roberta Smith’s gallery structures which made its first appearance at the Mead Gallery in 2009.
