Welcome Welcome to the Summer 2019 Season at Warwick Arts Centre. It’s been wonderful over recent months to meet and see the people of Coventry, Warwickshire and beyond enjoying the enormous array of events and activities that Warwick Arts Centre offers. From families exploring our Art & Nature Trail and our new Creative Learning Space, to meeting drama, dance and music attenders, as well as student performers, it’s been a pleasure. Our development, alongside an exciting new Faculty of Arts building, is part of a multi-million pound investment to create a central arts and culture quarter at the heart of the University of Warwick campus. It’s business as usual throughout though, so read on for all the delights on offer. Doreen Foster Director, Warwick Arts Centre

Theatre, Dance & Circus Icons Fri 26 Apr 7.30pm Le Gateau Chocolat is a one-of-a-kind sensation in cabaret, drag and show business – a larger-than-life vocal talent who can belt out a tumultuous array of hits with his booming baritone and big personality, all parcelled up in a fabulous layer of lycra and sequinned dresses. In his latest work Icons, Le Gateau Chocolat walks the tightrope between his public and private personas, exploring the people, the moments, the relationships and the art that have come to shape us and the ideals we aspire to. Accompanied by a live band, Gateau unashamedly weaves through an eclectic mix of music; pop, opera, rock, Kate Bush, Whitney, Meatloaf, Pavarotti… investigating his own objects of worship through the songs and music of his personal icons. “HIS VOICE IS BOTH DELICATE AND GLORIOUSLY METEOROLOGICAL, HIS CEILING-LIFTING BARITONE RICH AND SILKY AS A LINDOR TRUFFLE AND RESONANT AS A BELL.” The Stage 1hr 10mins / Age 14+ Theatre £16

PAUL O’DONNELL
We’ve Got Each Other Fri 10 May 7.45pm SOLD OUT RETURNS ONLY The almost entirely imagined Bon Jovi musical from Coventry artist Paul O’Donnell. With the modern jukebox musical comes: a multi-talented cast, orchestra, opulent sets, decadent costumes, extravagant routines, dramatic key changes and the odd hydraulic lift or two. We’ve Got Each Other has none of these things (they cost lots of money), but Paul tries to create this all-singing, all-dancing spectacle using the powers of your imagination. Through entertaining descriptions of the show as it unfolds and 180+
lighting cues, Paul invites the audience to fill in the gaps imagining the breathtaking tragic love story of Tommy and Gina. Winner of Be Festival’s Audience Award 2018, Fitt Festival, Tarragona’s Audience Award 2018 and Best Performer Award 2018. 1hr 5mins / Age 12+ Studio £13 (£11) Captioned and Audio Described using Talking Birds’ Difference Engine Commissioned by China Plate, mac Birmingham, Warwick Arts Centre and In Good Company. Supported by Camden People’s Theatre and Arts Council England.
THE TIGER LILLIES
Devil’s Fairground Wed 15 May 8pm The Grammy nominated Godfathers of alternative cabaret return with a very special show celebrating their 30th anniversary. The world of The Tiger Lillies is dark and hilarious, with moments of immense beauty. Formed in 1989, they perform shows worldwide and remain one of the most provocative and genre-defying bands of all time, winning an Olivier award for their hit West End musical Shockheaded Peter. In this new show, they take you on a trip to the Devil’s Fairground – temptation and sin await! “THE EXECUTION IS IMPECCABLE THROUGHOUT. PHENOMENAL.” ★★★★★ The Guardian “BEHIND THE GREASEPAINT LURKS GENUINE EMOTION.” ★★★★★ The Independent Age 14+ Theatre £21 06
Bells and Spells by Victoria Thierrée Chaplin with Aurélia Thierrée and Jaime Martinez Tue 21 & Wed 22 May 7.30pm There is plenty of humour and a spark of absurdity in Victoria Thierrée Chaplin’s world. In her new show, Aurélia Thierrée gets inside the skin of a kleptomaniac. She finds herself manipulated by the objects she borrows, under their influence. These objects belong to a world which has a mind of its own. A coat rack gets up and walks. Chairs and a table slide and slip away, while a wall opens and a pair of dancers emerge. A dress suddenly takes on a life of its own. Here is where the bizarre rubs shoulders with the supernatural: mirages to make you smile and dream. There is no place for logic, reason, or sobriety as we are taken on a journey through hallucinatory lands, libertarian countries and surreal humour. 1hr 10mins / Age 11+ Theatre £30 (£28), £26 (£24), £21 (£19) Under 26s £16

HALF A STRING
Boulder Wed 19 & Thu 20 Jun 7.45pm In this reimagining of a Greek myth, a beautiful mechanical puppet struggles to move a colossal, burdensome stone. Doomed with the hopeless task of pushing the rock up a hill, he is condemned to watch it roll back each day. Trapped in an endless cycle, the man wrestles with his pointless existence cursing the futility of life. Augmented by hand drawn, earthy animation, Boulder fuses live and digital, all accompanied by live cello, atmospheric voices and original music. Within this intriguing blend emerges fluid transformations of set and scale as this trickster strains at the confines of his situation. 1hr 10mins / Age 12+ Studio £15 (£13) Under 26s £11 Post Show Talk Wed 19 Jun Boulder supported by The Marlowe and co-commissioned by Warwick Arts Centre & Arts Council England.

CIRKUS XANTI & ALI WILLIAMS PRODUCTIONS
As a Tiger in the Jungle Wed 29 May 2pm & 7.30pm “There was a tiger in the jungle behind her mother’s house.” “Crocodiles were hiding in the muddy river. Human sharks passed by in lorries on their way to India, leaving behind a trail of lost children.” Nepalese artists perform their deeply personal story of being trafficked into the circus industry as young children, using the means of their enslavement to speak against it. Circus, spoken word, movement and ceremony are used to show how, against all odds, Renu Ghalan and Aman Tamang survived their childhood and created their own destiny. “AS A TIGER IN THE JUNGLE IS LIKELY TO HAVE AN UNFORGETTABLE LIFE-LONG PROFOUND EFFECT ON YOU.” Theatre Reviews 60mins / Age 8+ Theatre £13 (£11) Under 26s £5 Post Show Talk after 2pm performance Produced as an international partnership between Ali Williams, ex-Artistic Director of the pioneering Welsh circus company NoFit State, and Norwegian company Circus Xanti. 1 Leave Warwick Arts Centre and go left along the main road. On the grassed area to your left, you will see three stone sculptures by the artist, Atsuo Okamoto: Forest Planet (2009 and 2011). Okamoto’s work explores the properties of the stone with which he works and the way it changes over time. Okamoto believes that stones hold memories and often the artist introduces sound into his sculptures.
6 To the right of the lake you will see a row of young Dawn Redwood trees. The Dawn Redwood is a living fossil that has barely changed in 150 million years and as a wild tree is confined to just a few sites in China. These trees may look like they are evergreens but are actually deciduous; their leaves drop off in autumn. 7 Looking up to your right, you may catch your first sight of Acrobats (1997, cast 2012) by Barry Flanagan. Barry Flanagan OBE (1941–2009) was a leading British artist of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. He is perhaps best known for his dynamic, often monumental, bronze hares, which were first exhibited in the early 1980s. When asked about his preoccupation with hares, Flanagan would describe the magical experience of seeing a hare running on the Sussex Downs. This event prompted his first Leaping Hare sculpture of 1979. For the Egyptians the hare represented life. In Chinese mythology the hare is the sole inhabitant of the moon and the symbol of immortality. Acrobats is almost 4.5m high; feel free to go closer for a better look.
Family Activities
11 Take a break next to Régis Chaperon’s Hare (2018). This is a model of an origami hare, carved into North African limestone. The material looks like manila brown paper. It appears as if it has been creased and folded to make a three-dimensional shape rather than carved from a solid substance. 12

At the back of the Sports Pavilion you will find the oldest and biggest Oak on the campus. You can age Oaks by measuring the trunk girth in inches (the trunks expand by about one inch per year). The girth on this one is about 210 inches, which suggests it was planted at the end of the 18th Century or start of the 19th Century – long before the University existed.
As you join the main path, turn left. Follow the path as it winds down towards a lake. To the right of the path, by the side of the lake, is Guy Stevens’ Reclining Stone (2018). This piece makes reference to Henry Moore’s reclining sculptural figures, but on this sculpture you are invited to be the reclining figure. Why not take a seat?
13
To the left of the path, can be seen Wind Sculpture (1985) by Paul Mount. Paul Mount has used the reflective properties of steel and the movement of the wind to create an artwork in constant flux. Cross over the lake at the first bridge you meet on the right and then follow the path to the right, which curves around the back of a nursery. When you meet a main road, turn right and head down towards the roundabout. At the roundabout, take a right and walk along the road. The building on your right-hand side is Warwick Business School.
Make and create in these drop in sessions inspired by our family programme. To find out more about the related performances, see the Families and 2 Go past the Oculus building on Young People section on pages 12 – 15. your right-hand side. Look out for an oversized stile on the grassy area beside the Oculus building. This is a sculpture by the artist, Lucy Tomlins, called Concrete Country in Red (2018). From a distance this stile looks wooden but it is actually made of Corten steel. The work serves as both a barrier and a gateway. It is strong enough to be climbed on and can also be used as a seat.

As the road veers left, follow the path that drops down, signposted ‘Tocil’. When the road levels, continue walking round to the left; the building on your left-hand side is the Sports Centre. At the corner of the Sports Centre, on the circle of grass to the right of the path, you can see one of the tallest trees on the campus: a Wellingtonia. Wellingtonia are extremely fastgrowing and this tree may not be as old as you might first think. A nearby younger Wellingtonia is triangular in shape, almost like a Christmas tree.

it curves to the right, goes over a stream and passes a running route leading off to the right. On your right you will see Alder woodland. This occurs on damper soils beside stream courses. Alders have small black cones and, from February to April, catkins. After the Alders, take the next right, between two black fences and through a vehicle barrier. Do not follow the footpath to the right. Instead, walk between the halls of residence ahead of you. At the spiral fire escape, when the road veers to the right, take the path to the left. This will bring you out onto a field with exercise and play equipment; why not have a go? There’s a basketball hoop here too. When you’re ready, follow the path to the right that runs down the side of this field.

At the crossroads turn right, heading up along the pavement. An avenue of young Horse Chestnut trees leads from the lakeside area to the heart of the campus. In autumn you may be able to find conkers beneath. When you see a building with a white fire escape, take a left. This will take you between two buildings; the one on your right is the student laundry. 9
As you walk round the Sports Pavilion, look up under the eaves of the roof and you will see Swallows’ nests. These birds spend the winter in Africa, flying back to their nesting areas here in April and May.
right-hand side of Leighfield Road, just outside the entrance to Cryfield Old Farmhouse, you will see a Ginkgo tree. Cross over the road safely and have a look. TThe Ginkgo is a unique tree, so primitive that it reproduces in a similar manner to ferns and mosses with a type of swimming pollen. It is another living fossil that has barely changed in over 200 million years and in the wild is confined to just a few places in China. Continue walking up Leighfield Road away from the Ginkgo. On your right you will see a signpost for Windmill Hill and a gate with a stile. Go over the stile or, if open, through the gate. Go straight ahead. Across the field to your left, you can see the University of Warwick’s new Sports Centre in the distance.

Continue walking and you will see the red sculpture, 3B Series I (1968) by Bernard Schottlander. This is one of the earliest works bought for the University Art Collection. It now has grade II listed status. A German Jewish refugee, Schottlander came to the UK in 1939. He was a sculptor and designer. He originally worked as a welder. Can you see any welding in the sculpture? You can also see an example of his design in the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry city centre; Schottlander created their chandeliers. Walk away from 3B Series I, take the diagonal path to your left and go up the steps and along the pavement between two buildings. The building on your left is called Benefactors. It has a pond which sometimes contains ducks. You are now very close to the Arts Centre. If you are tired, you may choose to end your walk here or to take a break in the Arts Centre Café. If you wish to continue, at the road turn left and when you get to a main road (Gibbet Hill Road) turn left towards a roundabout. If you can find any acorns, notice how they lack the stalk seen in English Oak. But if you can find some fallen leaves you will notice that they have a long stalk, unlike English Oak. 16 Near to the water are Elm trees. Huge Elm trees once dominated the Warwickshire countryside, resulting in the term ‘leafy Warwickshire’. Sadly Dutch Elm Disease (caused by a fungus transported by bark beetles) has killed most of the old Elm trees

20 On the left-hand side of the road you will see the colourful sculpture Needle of Knowledge Obelisk (1993–4) by Stefan Knapp. Cross over carefully and have a closer look. This sculpture is made of enamel on steel. Knapp spent many years researching and developing techniques for using enamel on steel and using them on a grand scale. He created the largest public mural in the world for the side of a department store in New Jersey, America. The mural included 280 panels and weighed 250 tonnes. 21 Continue along the main road in the same direction. Close to the road, on the right hand side, just before you reach the Bus Interchange, you will find Holly and Ivy: two plants strongly associated with Christmas, which feature in an old favourite carol. Can you remember the words? 22 Beside the taxi rank, you will see the sculpture of an anxiously pacing cat. This is Days of Judgement, Cat 1 (2012) by Laura Ford. Originally one of a series of seven, the poses of the cats were inspired by the figures of Adam and Eve in a fresco by the Renaissance artist Masaccio called The Expulsion from the Garden of Eden (1427).

Coull Quartet
European Union Chamber Orchestra Fri 26 Apr 7.30pm Haydn Mozart Fauré Tchaikovsky
Symphony No.44 in E minor Trauer Violin Concerto No.4 in D K.218 Nocturne Serenade for Strings in C Op.48
Director Violin
Hans-Peter Hofmann Tasmin Little
The European Union Chamber Orchestra is an orchestra with the spirit of a string quartet – a crack team of superb young players, united by the sheer joy of making music together. In this concert, they bring all their signature verve to a truly passionate programme. Fauré’s moonlit Nocturne, and one of Haydn’s darkest, most heartfelt symphonies prepare the way for the warmth, wit and unchained melody of Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings – Russian music at its most relaxed and elegant. National treasure Tasmin Little joins the EUCO for the sparkling Fourth Violin Concerto by the composer whom Haydn considered his greatest friend, and whom Tchaikovsky loved above all others – the teenage Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Champagne for the ears! Pre-Concert Talk: Woods-Scawen Room 6.15pm £2.50 In conversation with Tasmin Little.

Terror, Tenderness and Transcendence Thu 9 May 7.15pm Mozart Cecilia McDowall Beethoven
Quartet in G K.387 Quartet (2004) The Case of the Unanswered Wire Quartet in E flat Op.127
From the telegraph room of a doomed warship flood messages of terror, determination and, incredibly, love. Cecilia McDowall’s String Quartet dates from 2004, and though it’s short it carries a powerful emotional punch. It’s a vision of a lost world to set beside Mozart’s joyous G major Quartet and the transcendent beauty of Beethoven’s Quartet Op.127: music that never sounds any less extraordinary. Coull Quartet
From Suffolk to Schubert Thu 13 Jun 7.15pm Haydn Imogen Holst Schubert
Quartet in F Op.50 No.5 String Quintet (1982) String Quartet in C D.956
Imogen Holst loved the cold winter air in Suffolk: “It’s like having champagne without the hangover”, she said. Her atmospheric String Quintet of 1982 has that same intoxicating clarity, coupled with a very English melancholy – a magical contrast to Haydn’s wit and grace, and a wonderfully poetic counterpart to Schubert’s C major String Quintet: a regular choice on Desert Island Discs (and with good reason, because chamber music doesn’t get much more sublime).

Capriccio Espagnol Violin Concerto Symphonic Dances
Conductor Violin
Thomas Sanderling Alexander Sitkovetsky
Far from his native Russia, amongst the cocktails and swimming pools of Beverly Hills, Rachmaninov looked back over a long life and created the Symphonic Dances: three sumptuous, emotionally charged movements filled with joys, regrets and unforgettable melodies. It’s a wonderful way to end our 2018 – 2019 Concert Series and the perfect calling-card for a major Russian orchestra on tour. Violinist Alexander Sitkovetsky is British, but he’s got Russian heritage, and one critic described his interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto as “both exciting and intuitive”. But first, a musical postcard from a Russian abroad: RimskyKorsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol launches the evening in a blaze of rhythm, colour and pure Mediterranean sunshine.
