The scope of this dissertation will examine how cultural heritage is involved in the Syrian
conflict by taking the city of Aleppo as a case study. Aleppo was chosen for its importance
historically, culturally and economically, and for the strategic role it plays in the current
conflict. It is also the most damaged historic city in the situation. This will be accompanied
by a thorough review of Aleppo's history and how the previous clashes have damaged its
built heritage in the past, as well as in the current conflict, whilst also providing information
about the efforts to preserve it. The first part will examine the significance of Aleppo's
cultural heritage and review the main events that have destroyed and revived it, both
historically and more recently. The intent of the second part is to state the involvement of the
historic buildings in the battle of Aleppo and to identify the major damages to the tangible
and intangible heritage of the city.
