On behalf of the Association Board of Directors, Committee Members and Volunteers-welcome to the 2015 Mason County Forest Festival. Today the Mason County Forest Festival Association proudly presents The 71st Annual Mason County Forest Festival, one of the longest running large festivals in Washington. The theme of this year’s Forest Festival is “Celebrate The Seasons of Our Forest.” The Paul Bunyan Grand Parade will without a doubt be as spectacular as ever. The Honor Guard from the USS Nimitz is leading off the parade. There will be something there for everyone, parade floats, dance teams, logging trucks, marching bands, classic cars, fire trucks and much more. STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® is returning this year to Loop Field with the STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Western Regional Qualifier. It is a huge honor for us to host this regional event. The competition is going to be fierce with the 2 time National Champion competing here. STIHL and
RAM Trucks, two of the major sponsors, will both have booths at the Logging Show, showcasing some of their products. Come out to Loop Field for the Logging Show, root on your favorite competitor and visit the vendors while you are there. Forest Festival is not just the parade and the logging show, there are many other events to attend and participate in: The Goldsborough Creek Run/Walk/Jog, Firefighter’s Pancake Breakfast, The Shelton Car Show Off, The Wood Duck Race and the Spectacular Fireworks Show. Mason County Forest Festival Association is a volunteer organization, incorporated in 1947 as a non-profit. If it were not for the volunteers of the past we would not be celebrating the 71st Forest Festival. As with years past we are always welcoming new volunteers. If this is something that you think might interest you please contact us, give back to the community, it is very rewarding. Messages from the Festival board – CELEBRATE THE SEASONS OF OUR FOREST Janis Carter | MCFFA Vice-President
I was raised in Raymond, where my father was a log truck driver, so I definitely feel at home here. I Iove seeing the log trucks, watching the tug boats– yes, and even waiting for a train. (Well, sometimes). I heard that the Forest Festival Committee was in need of volunteers if the festival were to continue. Somehow I couldn’t picture there not being a float that represented our great County or bands that represent our schools. This event brings citizens together to celebrate all the beauty that God gave us. So I went to a meeting to see if there was something this “little-ole-lady” could do to help make a difference. I was needed. It was the time to come out of my comfort zone, step up, and say “How can I help?”
Before I knew it I was the Vice-President as well as the Grand Parade Chair. I won’t say I am not nervous about all this responsibility – but I have lots of help and support from the fine group of people who are also so sincere about keeping our Mason County Forest Festival a living legend for many years to come. I hope the citizens of Mason County will feel the same motivation and get involved in our community. There’s always a spot for you. See you there!

Have you ever noticed that everyone smiles when they talk about Festival memories? The MC Forest Festival is one of the longest running festivals in WA and each year brings new memories, the kind you smile about. When I moved here in the ‘90s, one of the delightful surprises was the Mason County Forest Festival and the Paul Bunyan Grand Parade. How excited I was to live in a small town where they still have parades! This event really unites the community – if you’re not in the parade, you’re watching it!
From the parade and logging show to the fireworks and the car show – Forest Festival is filled with free family fun that is sure to generate a smile when you relate your event memories! I hope you and your family enjoy making your own wonderful memories during the 71st annual Forest Festival.

MAY 28 – 31 | SHELTON, WA It is a fun time to celebrate our beautiful forest that we love so much! Come out and support the Forest Festival. Join the fun as events celebrate the rich timber history in Mason County with downtown Shelton Paul Bunyan parade, runs, fireworks, vendors, logging show, great food, car show and carnival. (See schedule page 24-25)
Cotton candy & corn dogs, brightly festooned parade floats, shiny classic cars and spinning carnival rides – all hallmarks of the start of Summer as locals flock to celebrate the local timber heritage. The history of Shelton is closely tied with logging operations in the area. In 1853, Michael T. Simmons built the first sawmill in Mason County on Mill Creek just south of present-day Shelton. Sol G. Simpson came to the area and founded the Simpson Logging Company in the 1890s establishing Shelton as a center of timber operations for much of the following century. The first Mason County Forest Festival in 1945 showcased the value of timber to the commu-
nity while demonstrating the importance of safeguarding the forests against destructive fires. Over the years visitors flocked to Shelton to see, in the words of an ad for the 12th annual Forest Festival, “the dramatic Forest Pageant, the thrilling parade and the exciting contests in which loggers demonstrate their skills at falling, bucking, tree topping and truck driving.” The 1953 Forest Festival celebrated the 100th anniversary of logging operations in Mason County, and a large sign
carved into a piece of Douglas fir was permanently dedicated in it’s location overlooking Shelton’s Oakland Bay. On the festival’s final day 30,000 people — about six times the regular population of the town — crowded into Shelton to watch the Paul Bunyan Parade through downtown. The Mason County Forest Festival Association is a non-profit organization run by dedicated volunteers. Have you wondered what’s become of the royalty of past Forest Festivals? Here’s a quick look at where life has taken some of them since they rolled down Railroad Avenue in the Paul Bunyan Parade. Presiding over the first Forest Festival, in 1945, was Irene S. Reed High School senior Lois Gibler. Eighteen years later, in 1963, her 14-year-old daughter, Linda LaBissoniere, was a Forest Festival junior princess.
The Journal reported that Linda said her mom, wearing the current queen’s robes, looked “even more beautiful” than she had in 1945. Five years later, Lois’s younger daughter, Leslee LaBissoniere, was a princess in the festival’s royal court.

Lois and her husband, Les LaBissoniere, had been married for 23 years when he died of a heart attack. Later, still living on Hood Canal, Lois met Bob Kussman, a retired Naval Air Corps pilot with two sons Lois and Bob married 42 years ago and lived in Tacoma, then Olympia. They have been active and honored volunteers with the Boys & Girls Club of South Puget Sound, and have enjoyed extensive travel. Bob’s health is failing these days, but “We’ve had a wonderful life,” she said.

Linda LaBissoniere Frady lives in Montlake Terrace and Leslee LaBissoniere Bailey lives in Olympia. Lois Kussler rejoices in 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. In its second year, the festival named Max Schmidt Jr. as Paul Bunyan. A 1937 graduate of Irene S. Reed High School, he began studies at Stanford but left to fight in World War II. After being injured in Germany, he returned to finish his degree in forestry at the University of Washington. Max spent his career as a real-life version of the legendary lumberjack, working for Simpson Timber Company as a log bucker, forester, logging manager and Washington Timberlands Manager from 1946 until his retirement in 1984. He and his wife, Louise, had two sons and a daughter; two live in Shelton. He died in December, 2012, at 92, and called Shelton home for all those years.

The 1964 festival queen, Liz Somers, and that year’s Paul Bunyan, Ron Orr, made it a permanent duo. Ron attended Washington State University, Liz the UW; when Ron entered the Air Force and was stationed at Williams Air Force Base, she put her speech therapy degree to work at the Gompers center in Phoenix; when he was posted to Rome, New York, she worked for the school system there. Later, he flew private planes for International Paper, and Liz worked in Vancouver schools.

Ron flew for Western Airlines and Delta, retiring in 2004. His last four years, he flew out of New York to Europe, Russia, the Middle East and India. When the Orrs moved to Bainbridge Island in 1980, Liz directed the Montesorri program there until her death at 52 in 1998. The Orrs had two children, Matt and Kjirste; Matt has one daughter. Ron resides on Bainbridge Island.

North Mason’s first Forest Festival queen was Patsy Bixenmann, who reigned in 1965. Patsy recalls with delight the court’s participation in other parades (she had her first taste of bear stew at McCleary’s Bear Fest), and chaperon Alma Burke’s proper manners and stunning Thunderbird car. Patsy, who lives in Olympia, married, raised a family of three, worked with senior services for Lewis County, went back to school, and became human resources manager for Providence Centralia Hospital. She’s now single again, enjoying retirement, and working as a CASA volunteer with Thurston County courts. Patsy notes that in its first decades, Forest Festival had a distinctive fire-prevention theme. “The queen was also Miss Keep Washington Green for the year,” she said, recalling that she and Smokey Bear visited children’s camps and other places all summer, promoting fire safety.
Smokey the Bear, the fire-prevention icon, was an appointed role in those years. Michael Connolly said he and his older brother, Jim Connolly, both of whom worked at KMAS Radio and participated in high-school drama, were probably chosen on that basis for the Smokey role in 1972 and 1970, respectively. “The Smokey the Bear costume was borrowed from the Forest Service,” he said. “The body of the costume was all one piece, with itchy fur above the blue jeans. There was an absolute rule that you were not to appear in public with the head off.” He recalls returning during his freshman year at the UW to do a Smokey interview with Katherine Wise on KOMO Radio. Jim (James A.) Connolly attended Gonzaga and law school at Willamette University before practicing law in Olympia. He died of cancer in 2010. Michael went on to study music, earned his master’s and doctorate in musical arts at University of Southern California and studied music in Vienna as a Rotary International Scholar. He is a professor of music at the University of Portland, and maintains his county connection at his family’s Hood Canal cabin and now with his own cabin at Kamilche Point. From the festival’s first year until 1967, Paul Bunyan with his axe stood atop a load of enormous old-growth logs. “I was the last one,” Art Tozier recalls. “I was up there on the top log of a three-log load.” Art figured that standing, he was about 24 feet up. “When we turned the corner at First Street I had to literally crawl through the wires.” Now Paul Bunyan rides at a lower level. Despite the danger, Art loved being Paul Bunyan. “It was a really special group of people,” he said of the court.

Art Tozier & Shayne Larsen, 1967
In subsequent years, Art did a brief stint in the woods himself, but has spent most of his career in business in Shelton with his brother, Evan. First, they bought the Western Farmers Co-op on First Street. “We had no idea what we were doing,” he said. But they got the hang of it; today, their Tozier Brothers business at the east end of First Street includes farm and garden supplies, equipment sales and rentals, and hardware. Forest Festival Queen Shayne Larson reigned the same year Art did. Shayne, however, didn’t stay local. She got her degree at Washington State University, went to work, married former Paul Bunyan Dan Barrom, and had a son. After five years, however, the two divorced and went their separate ways. Shayne worked in the financial department at Stanford University’s medical center; she remarried, and she and Mike Frankel have a daughter. She left her job as finance officer at Stanford when Mike was transferred to the Pentagon, but they have now retired and returned to San Jose. Dan lives in Laguna Hills. Remarried, he has twin daughters. His career has been in program planning in the world of business computers. Forest Festival tends to be a family event. The year after Shayne was queen, her mom,

Edee Larson, assisted Miss Burke, and the next year, Edee began a seven-year stint as the court’s chaperon. One year, with Edee’s encouragement, Queen Janice Wittenberg and her court made their own dresses. Art Tozier’s niece, Julie Johnston, was a Forest Festival princess in 1995. After completing her Master’s degree in college student services at Oregon State University, Julie works as an academic advisor at the University of Washington Tacoma Campus, and recently competed in a half-Iron Man competition in Lake Stevens. She lives in Covington. Billie Howard, Art’s aunt and Julie’s great-aunt, was the parade’s first woman Grand Marshal in 1999. Paul Hunter, who was Paul Bunyan in 1981, earned his bachelor of science degree at WSU and works in the family business, Hunter Farms. Paul married Leslie Schumacher;

Looking back on his festival experience, Paul said it gave him “the confidence in myself to face life as a young adult.” He says he encounters other Paul Bunyans as business and community leaders, and called his festival role “one of the most positive memories of my life.” Paul’s nephews followed in his festival footsteps. Tyler Schlauderaff carried the axe in the parade in 2003, and Abe Schlauderaff did the same honors in 2008. Tyler works for Paul in the farm business, and Abe’s in medical school in Wisconsin. Their brother, Caleb Schlauderaff, was the festival’s Smokey Bear; he went on to play football for the Jets, and is retired. At 27. “He was my timber faller this year,” his uncle said. Caleb plans to attend medical school in the fall. Molly Eveleth, who reigned in 1982, has lived in many places since. She attended the UW, married Sheltonian Bruce Parker, and soon afterward went to Germany where Bruce was posted with the Army. “Since then, we have moved into 19 different homes, eight different states, and will make our final move this summer to Aberdeen, N.C.,” she said. They have three daughters, Paige, Kayl and Cassie.

Molly later finished school and puts her RN degree to work as case manager for high-risk Medicaid and Medicare patients in Pinehurst, N.C. Bruce retired as a colonel after a career that took him to Panama, Iraq and Afghanistan. “We have lost friends and fellow soldiers and officers in the war – and we regularly visit Arlington Cemetery,” she said. Molly and Bruce, and often Molly and their daughters, have traveled widely: Mexico; Canada; 35 states; Berlin when the wall was intact and under guard and again when East and West Germany reunited; England; Italy; and most of Western Europe. Molly has spent hundreds of hours volunteering with military families. Two of their daughters are married, and one is in college in Georgia.

Forest Festival hosts professional logging competition MICK SPROUFFSKE | MCFFA President
We are excited to host the STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Series Professional Western Qualifier again this year on May 30th at Loop Field. Officials from STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® were so impressed with the success of last year’s event that they invited us to host it again. The Mason County Forest festival received many accolades from the STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Series organizers and competitors, many of whom have competed around the country and world. One of the competitors said that Forest Festival was one of the best overall logging show’s in the world he had been to in recent years, that we had the best setting at Loop Field and we always have a huge crowd of fans supporting us.
Loop Field has been the site of most of the Forest Festival Logging Shows. It truly is a grand setting with the lush green grass and the back drop of the majestic fir trees. We are grateful to the City of Shelton in particular Parks and Recreation for the way they go the extra mile in maintaining Loop Field. Established in 1985, the STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Series assembles lumberjacks from around the globe to compete. The Series is seen

FOREST FESTIVAL is pleased to once again host the STIHL ® TIMBERSPORTS ® Professional Western Qualifier. by over 20 million viewers annually in over 62 countries. Athletes compete in a variety of disciplines based on traditional logging skills to determine the best all-around lumberjack. Disciplines include Hot Saw, Single Buck, Springboard Chop, Standing Block Chop, Stock Saw and Underhand Chop. The professionals in the Series compete in five regional professional qualifiers throughout America. This Series Professional events will be broadcasted on ABC Network. Since 2011, with the growing popularity of the Series and growth of international competitions, the U.S. Series has only been open to U.S. athletes in the regional qualifiers. The World Championship competitions are the venue for international competition. There are 40 total open slots, 8 from each region, for professionals looking to compete and

The most famous is Hap Johnson, 18 time world champion speed climber. He performed at the World’s Fair in Seattle, New York and Montreal. As a major forest products enterprise in Mason County, Green Diamond Resource Company is an ardent supporter of Mason County Forest Festival. “So many people have kept this tradition alive over the years,” said Paul Wing, vice president and general manager of Green Diamond’s Northwest Division, based in Shelton. “On behalf of Green Diamond and the forest products industry, I want to thank each of the hard-working volunteers who are carrying this legacy forward today.” Wing and others at Green Diamond remember as children watching the parade, logging show and other traditions of the Forest Festival. He remembers having to maneuver the giant ax to get under the power lines. Today’s Paul Bunyan stands on a platform midway up the stack of logs, instead of perching on top. Wing saw his first logging show that same year. “It was fascinating to see how quickly the contestants could chop through logs, the big chips flying every which way,” he recalled.
Green Diamond’s employees are responsible for diverse activities in the forest such as planting 2 million-plus trees per year, laying out harvest units with protection for fish,wildlife and clean water, logging trees to be made into homes and other wood products around the world, or providing support to these management activities, Green Diamond celebrate Forest Festival every day. One of Green Diamond’s unique contributions to Forest Festival is a field day, open to 5th graders throughout Mason
County. Each year, since 2000, some 400 students learn the value of a tree, an applied math exercise; the habitat in a streamside buffer; forest history, including the teamwork required in operating a crosscut saw; how to set a choker and fell a tree; and how “round” logs are made into “square” lumber, among other lessons. 2015 Parade Grand Marshal: Carolyn Olsen Her smile – Her loyalty to everything Mason County. Her support for everyone and every cause. Her ability to laugh at herself and make others comfortable. These are a few of the reasons why Carolyn Olsen was nominated & chosen to be the 2015 Mason County Forest Festival Grand Marshal. Carolyn moved to Shelton with her husband, Rod Olsen, in 1969. She & Rod had 5 children – Sandy, Kristen, Karin, Robert & Rod Jr. – while building their business, Olsen Furniture. In 2002, Carolyn opened Sage Book Store- combining her love for books with her desire to bring a positive and fun retail store into the community she loves. For 13 years she fulfilled that dream for herself and the community. Carolyn is known as the “Energizer Bunny” in Kristmas Town Kiwanis.
She is a supporter of Harmony Hill as well as South Sound Senior Services. She is an integral part of Mason County Foundation For Hope, which is dedicated to success of Mason County Problem-Solving Court Programs. A Past President of the Shelton-Mason County Chamber of Commerce, as well as a member of the North Mason Chamber and the Mason General Hospital Arts Commission, Carolyn is currently an active advocate for Save the Pool, Save the Library, the Alcoholism Task Force,

The Optimist Club invites people of all ages, families, groups and pets to come downtown Shelton on Saturday morning, May 30th, at 10:00 a.m. to have some good old fashioned fun by participating in the Family and Pet Parade that kicks off the Forest Festival Grand Parade on Railroad Avenue. Dress up with your pets, decorate your bikes, wear a costume, have a forest theme or something totally different! Cash prizes for best entries will be awarded. Categories include Group and/or Family, DressUp with Pet, Forestry Theme, Costumes/Fairy Tales, Float or Decorated Wagon, and Decorated Bike. HOSPITAL GUILD HOSTS ANNUAL GOLDSBOROUGH CREEK FUN RUN The run has a history of about 20 years as an event for Forest Festival. It started as a low key gathering for friends to run around loop field and downtown before the parade and then grew to an event we know today. It was even held at Shelton High School with running around Island Lake for a couple of years. The event is for walkers or runners of all ability levels and their family and friends. All current events, except the junior jog, begin at Shelton Valley, a farming community west of Shelton city limits. Participants are bussed from the check-in point to the start line. 7 mile participants follow the Shelton Valley/Deegan Road loop before heading into Shelton. 2 mile participants leave Shelton Valley proper and go directly to downtown following the parade route on Railroad Avenue to the Shelton
Post Office where all races end. Mile sponsors mark each mile of the course(s). Âź mile junior joggers, ages 3 to 8, begin their jog at 7th street and continue to the post office, each receiving a medal and book about the forest at the finish line. Check-in and day of race registration begins at 6:00 AM at the Shelton Post Office Park on Saturday, May 30, 2015.

The 7 mile walk starts at 7:00 am so that walkers have completed the course by roughly 9:30. The main events, the 7 mile run and 2 mile run/walk begin at 8:00 am. The junior jog begins at 9:30 am on Railroad Avenue. An awards ceremony is held at the Post Office Park at 9:45, giving out medals to winners of age categories as well as giving random prizes donated from local businesses. Centennial Guild, a chapter of Mason General Hospital Foundation, has been managing the event for the Forest Festival Association since 2009. It is a major fundraiser for the Guild. Their proceeds are used to purchase equipment for Mason General Hospital. Title sponsor of the event for the last three years has been Regence Blue Cross. Mile marker sponsors are Hiawatha Evergreens, Armstrong and Armstrong Christmas Trees, Gillis Auto Center, McCarty and Associates Marketing Firm, Don Small and Sons Oil Distributors, Simpson Lumber Company, and South Sound Radiology. Lynch Creek Farm sponsors the finish line area. AAA Septic provides porta-potties at the race start and on Deegan Road for the 7 mile walkers. Meet the 2015 Mason County Forest Festival Court The Mason County Forest Festival 2015 Coronation Ceremony was held in March at the Shelton High School Performing Arts Center. Students competed for Queen, Princesses, Paul Bunyan and, new this year, Timber. Shelbie Garrick was crowned Queen of the Forest during the 2015 Coronation Ceremony. Chris Frost is Paul Bunyan and Kameron Jones is Timber the Axe Man. “After many decades with the Forest Festival Royalty, Smokey Bear has been retired. The committee gave careful consideration to several great ideas and “Timber the Axe Man” was selected. We congratulate Kameron for making Forest Festival history by being the first ever Timber.” Says MCFFA President Mick Sprouffske.

Hello! My name is Shelbie Garrick and I am honored to represent Mason County as this year's Queen of the Forest. I am a senior at Shelton High School and a second year Running Start student at Olympic College.

I will have my Associates degree from OC by this fall then will continue my education at Pacific Lutheran University where I will major in Communications to become a journalist. I have always enjoyed reading and writing and therefore hope to turn one into a career, but my favorite hobby is spending time with my family at the dunes, tearing up the sand on my pink quad. I had the blessing of being a part of this historic royalty court last year as the Princess of Hemlock and had the most amazing time at parades, elementary schools and meetings; simply just being more involved in our community. Hi! My name is Chelsea Saeger and l am the 2015 Princess of Spruce. I'm 18 years old and a Senior at Shelton High School and a New Market Skill Center student for their Nursing Program. This fall I will start my prerequisite to obtain my RN at Olympic College. Then I plan to transfer to a University to acquire my Bachelor's in Science and study Oncology. In the
future I plan to become a Pediatric Oncology Nurse. I love working with children and have been a volunteer cheer coach for a local Shelton Climber cheer program, formally known as Shelton King's, for 2 years. I could not be more excited to be more involved with Mason County. I cannot wait to make lasting memories with our 2015 Forest Festival Royalty Court.

I enjoy playing three varsity sports for Shelton: soccer, bowling and tennis! I also enjoy representing my school through leadership programs and ASB council. My parents own a restaurant in Hoodsport, The Model T Pub and Eatery, where I spend summers working. I also have a pet poodle named Bentley! My name is Emily Frost; I am currently 17 years old, and a Junior at Shelton High School. I plan on graduating from high school in the year 2016, then furthering my education at a Community College and receiving my Associate’s Degree. I am very active in my community as an Explorer of Mason County Sheriff’s Office and Mason County Fire District #4. I enjoy serving meals with Community Dinners for the less fortunate. I have participated in “Faith Acts!, a ministry of Faith Lutheran Church” theater for three years. With my youth group, I went to a California food bank last summer and sorted and packed over 13 ½ tons of crates full of oranges, and filled many boxes of food for people who could use it. At
school I am involved in Spanish Club and hold the position of Secretary. I am also involved in sports including: Cross Country, Bowling, and Track and Field. I can’t wait to make wonderful new memories with this amazing group of people. I am honored to represent my town and I can’t wait for the wonderful new adventures to come this year.

Outside of school I enjoy many outdoor activities such as fishing, boating and camping with family and friends. I am so excited to represent the wonderful community of Mason County and to spend quality time making memories with my fellow court members!
Hello my name is Chris Frost and I am the princess of… oh wait!!! Just kidding, I am actually Paul Bunyan for the 2015 Forest Festival Royalty Court. I am 18 years old and a senior at Shelton High School. I am so glad to have been chosen for this position, and to be able to share this opportunity with my other fellow royalty members. I am a proud Eagle Scout, athlete, actor, singer, musician,
Representing our Mason County as part of the 2015 Forest Festival Royalty Court is an honor and a duty that I take such pride in. I look forward to sharing the history of Forest Festival and our new story of Timber the Axe Man with community organizations, while meeting other courts and being a role model for children.

Hello, I’m Kameron Jones. As a senior preparing to graduate with honors from Shelton High in June, I realize I have been planning for this since I was eight years old, when I knew I had an important role to help others and to bring efficiencies to the world. Recently accepted into The Evergreen State College’s nationally recognized Psychology program, I intend to achieve my bachelors and PhD in psychology, as well as becoming a Lean black belt, with additional majors in philosophy and Japanese studies. I enjoyed paging for the Legislature, interning for the Governor’s Results WA Office, and spend my free time with family and independently collecting warm coats for the 400+ homeless children and the battered women of Mason County.

I am planning on attending community college so that I can keep costs down and then transfer to a four year university to obtain a major in either Law, Teaching or Electrical Engineering. Forest Festival is about tradition. This year we are retiring a tradition and starting a new one. For over 30 years Smokey Bear has been a part of the Forest Festival Royalty Court. Last year Smokey Bear celebrated his 70th birthday, 70 years of promoting the message “ONLY YOU CAN PREVENT FOREST FIRES”. SMOKEY BEAR is administered by three entities: the United States Forest Service, the National Association of State Foresters, and the Ad Council. Smokey Bear’s name and image are protected by United States federal law, the Smokey Bear Act of 1952. The Smokey Bear suit that Mason County Forest Festival has been using was determined to be out of date and in need of replacement. The current decision makers have said that we do not meet the guidelines for purchasing a new suit. Therefore, Smokey Bear will no longer be on the Forest Festival Court, though he will always be a part of the Forest Festival in spirit. Through much deliberation it was determined to welcome a new tradition into the Mason County Forest Festival. We are proud to welcome “Timber the Axe Man.” Check out the poem to the right to hear his story as created by our first Timber, Kameron Jones! Welcome, Timber the Axe Man!

Following 70 years of Forest Festival – there’s a legend that’s not been told, For our hero, Paul Bunyan, was always alone with no one but Babe as he grew old. A new story tells us there’s more info to be aware, His best friend was Timber – with thick black hair, They met as young children playing deep in the wood, Both carrying giant axes as lumberjacks should. Inseparable they were – for many reasons, Taking care of each other through each of the Seasons. Each Fall the friends hunted for food as a team, The forest – their home land, keeping them lean. Manke Fireworks Light the Forest Festival Night In the 1940’s Elmer Manke began a family’s legacy as a timber family in the Pacific Northwest. He and his circle saw are the foundation for what was, and to many people still is, a crucial part of the economy in the logging town of Shelton, Washington. Today Shelton has become more than a logging town, but its timber ties are evidenced by Forest Festival, “High Climbers” and the waterfront dominated by the wood products industry. In the 1940’s Elmer Manke along with sons Chuck and Virgil founded Manke and Sons, Inc. This began a family legacy as a timber, forestry and logging family in the Pacific Northwest. In 1963 Manke and Sons acquired a plot of land on the north bank of Tacoma. This became the
first mill of Manke Lumber Company. In 1965 Manke and Sons changed its name to Manke Lumber Company when Elmer retired from the lumber business. Today Manke Lumber Company is still a family owned business with ties to virtually every aspect of the wood products industry. They continue to explore new technologies and business practices to protect resources and provide quality products to their customers. The Forest Festival is an important way in which Manke Lumber honors and celebrates
our community’s heritage. Manke has been a proud sponsor of the Forest Festival’s fireworks show for the past 12 years, among many of the clubs and events they sponsor in the community.Annually Manke Lumber has supported the spectacular fireworks show Saturday evening of the Forest Festival event. PAUL AND BABE WELCOME FESTIVAL ATTENDEES One of the most famous and popular North American folklore heroes, Paul is usually described as a giant as well as a lumberjack of unusual skill, and is often accompanied in stories by his animal companion, Babe the Blue Ox. Over 30 states and nine provinces have some form of giant Bunyan to be proud of. Shelton is no exception. In the early 1960’s, the Bingers Brothers brought Paul Bunyan, a fiberglass statue of legendary proportions to stand tall overlooking the local Binger gas station in Shelton. Through Paul’s history in Shelton he had many faces and many locations, until he eventually fell into ruin. In 1995, Lloyd Prouty and a group of friends stepped forward and took on the daunting task to restore Paul. Later Babe was added to his side. With the restoration of Paul and Babe, Mason County has been able to step back into the ranks of the communities throughout North America that celebrate the heritage that is represented by these logging folk lore legends.
As the Paul Bunyan Grand Parade passes by on May 30 be sure to check out the hydraulic limbo action as Paul navigates the power lines! We need to look no farther than ingenuity and integrity of this community for the resources to enhance and honor this heritage even more. Paul Bunyan and Blue are iconic mascots for Shelton and Mason County, visiting parade and festivals throughout the Northwest. They are also great draws for tourists to the area. With the help of Jerry Larimer, the A & W restaurant was a registration point for that first show and they used the Mountain View neighborhood as the location for the event. For a time, the Shelton T.O.W.N.E. (Through Our Wheels Nostalgia Endures) Cruisers helped put on the car show and raised funds to provide scholarships to Mason County students that planned to work in the auto industry. Scholarships were later broadened to include vocational and technical skills.
According to Annette McGee, people were very supportive of the scholarship program. After a couple of years, the name was changed to the Shelton Car Show-Off. The car show moved a few times in the early years, but returned to its home on Olympic Highway North where it fills eight city blocks from “C” Street to “K” The inspiration for the plaque Street. Many people and organizations have been involved in putting on this car show over the years. In 2007, the
Shelton High School NJROTC Booster Club became involved in running the car show and has been planning and running the show since 2010. Proceeds from this event help support the Forest Festival and the NJROTC cadets’ citizenship/leadership program and activities. The Booster Club is able to help send cadets to leadership academy and help get their teams to competitions because of the funds they raise from the car show. Six months of planning go into putting on the Car Show-Off. On the day of the show, it takes about 50 people to run the show. In recent years as many as 400 cars have registered for the show.

Helen Thomson, Car Show-Off Chair, adds, “The Shelton Car Show-Off continues to be a success because of all the support from the car owners, the local businesses that help sponsor the event costs and the dedication of the cadets and volunteers that participate every year. The Shelton High School NJROTC Booster Club is proud to be a part of this 25th year celebration and we want to extend our thanks for all the continued support for the Mason County Forest Festival, Shelton Car Show-Off and the Shelton High School NJROTC.” The Car Show-Off is open and free to spectators on Sunday from 10 to 3. MASON COUNTY STUDENTS CREATE 2015 BUTTON DESIGNS In the early years of the Forest Festival, the button had two purposes. The first was to admit you to events that were held during the festival. The second, as stated by Rudy Werberger the President in 1959 of the Mason County Forest Festival Association, “it identifies you as a citizen who is interested in his community’s biggest civic event of the year.” For many years the design of the button has been the result of a contest for students. The contest is open to all Mason County students and each year hundreds of designs are submitted. The theme for the button design this year was “Celebrate the Seasons of Our Forest” and 469 entries were received. At the annual coronation ceremony held in March the top three designs in each age group were announced. The grand prize design by Lauren Dagle became the 2015 Forest Festival Button. All the outdoor events are now free to spectators but we encourage everyone to buy a Forest Festival Button and wear it proudly! Buttons are $3 each and the proceeds support the Forest Festival.

After the 1979 Forest Festival, a special meeting was called to vote on whether or not the Forest Festival would continue. Bill Valley cast the deciding vote and made it possible for this wonderful tradition to be part of Mason County’s history. In 1980, in debt and with a broken down float, Bill Valley and several others started a donation campaign called the “Green Chain Committee”. After several weeks of phone calls and solicitation of local businesses and individuals, the Forest Festival was able to pay all its debts in full and had enough money to start building a new float which Bill designed. The float he designed in 1980 was the first time the Mason County Forest Festival made an entry in the Seafair Torchlight Parade. He is also credited with the design of beautiful award winning floats for many years after that.
Bill has been instrumental in all phases of the Festival. He would willingly be the “go to guy” who you could rely on to get the job done. Bill and Lorena took over the button design competition and grew the number of designs submitted by local school students from a few to over 400 this year. Their enthusiasm is contagious and they are truly ambassadors of the Mason County Forest Festival. Please join us in thanking Bill and Lorena for their many years of heroic community support!

Button, Button – Who Has the Button? Dr. James Grimes does! In fact, Dr. Grimes has a Forest Festival Button for each of the last 70 years. Collecting these buttons has been a hobby of his since 1985. One of his complete collections is on display at the Shelton Civic Center for all to see. The first year of the Forest Festival was 1945 and the button was of Smokey Bear. The button was also printed in yellow and brown and is a very rare find according to Dr. Grimes. He continues to look for that button as well as ones from 1946, 47, 48, 98 and the nickel-sized children’s buttons from the early years. One button, the 2004, was issued incorrectly with the first year of the festival as 1944 instead of 1945. Photos of all 71 buttons are featured here for everyone to enjoy a little piece of our Mason County Forest Festival history. Want to start your own collection?
