Welcome to the 2014 Mason County Forest Festival! Judy Bidwell | MCFF president On behalf of the Association Board of Directors, Committee Members and Volunteers –welcome to the 2014 Mason County Forest Festival! It began as an idea back in 1945. We can only imagine how the conversation went: “Let’s have a festival to celebrate and educate our community about the importance of our forests.” Suddenly, a great idea turned into a conversation. Other folks in the community agreed, “We’ll teach people how important it is to prevent forest fires and about reforestation! …And, of course, we’ll have a parade!” One of the loggers in the group surely added, “And let’s put on a logging show they’ll never forget! I’ll call the boys…” Those early organizers would be happy to know that their original idea has turned into a 70-year tradition! Today, the Mason County Forest Festival Association proudly presents The 70th Annual Mason County Forest Festival. The theme is “Our Logging Legacy.”
represent Mason County on the Forest Festival Float at other regional parades and events, all the way to the Seattle Seafair Parade! Perhaps you’ll meet them as they attend the many events that make up the Forest Festival…including The Logging Show! This year, as part of the Logging Show, we will host the STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Western Regional Qualifier. It is such an honor to be selected and given the opportunity to showcase Mason County. What an exciting way to celebrate our logging legacy! In addition to the traditional events, over the years the Forest Festival has grown to include: The Goldsborough Creek Run/ Walk/Jog, Shelton Car Show-Off, Tour de Mason Lake Bicycle Ride, Roxy Family Fun Night, The Wood Duck Race and the Spectacular Fireworks Show! And now, we are happy to announce the newest member of Forest Festival events…The Anna’s Bay Chorale Bluegrass Concert on Sunday afternoon.
Thank you!

It never ceases to amaze me how beautiful the views are in Mason County! Equally amazing is how close Mason County is to the rest of the civilization, yet how pristine and abounding with recreational opportunities and community events! Even when the sun isn’t shining, cresting the hill on Highway 101, after a fresh fall of snow in the mountains, you are hit smack in the windshield with a view to rival any wonder of the world! All of us are going a million directions at once and our lives are scheduled and over scheduled– and we are still not getting it all done. Just for a moment pause. Put down the iPhone. Unplug the games. When was the last time you cheered on the under-hand chop contest? Admired classic cars? Ate cotton candy? Spun uncontrollably on the Twister?
Take a journey to your backyard. Take a sick day. It will become a health day for the whole family as you remember what is to share in the rich traditions of being an integral piece of a community. Mason County is full of opportunities for you to connect with friends, family and make new friends – the annual Forest Festival celebrates and embodies these! Enjoy your local community and your Festival. Get the whole family involved – you never know you when might discover something wonderful!

Simpson Helps Build a Neighborhood with Lumber Donation and Volunteers
Better on You
Fabulous Fair Trade Fashions!
Smiles and “thank you’s” filled the bright living room at a Habitat for Humanity home dedication recently. Simpson employees volunteered 300 hours working on the largest home ever built by Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity. Simpson also donated all the dimensional lumber for the 30 homes planned for the community. Tracy Huntley, Simpson employee volunteer, said, “Getting involved with this build through Simpson felt a little like ‘paying it back’ for a similar opportunity my husband and I were fortunate enough to be given in the 1980s. I even used the same hammer!” Simpson volunteers spent 300 hours with the team that built the home. The Simpson house is one of the first 10 homes to be completed in Habitat’s Parkland-area neighborhood.
Simpson has two operating subsidiaries: Simpson Door Company and Simpson Tacoma Kraft Company, LLC with production facilities in Tacoma, Shelton and Longview, Washington; Meldrim, Georgia; and Georgetown, South Carolina. Simpson Door Company, headquartered in McCleary, Washington, produces high-quality interior and exterior wood doors. Simpson Tacoma Kraft Company, LLC manufactures bleached and unbleached kraft pulp and linerboard at its mill in Tacoma, Washington. The mill employs some of the most advanced paper recycling techniques available. The mill recycles some 500 tons of waste paper and boxes every day, turning it into high-quality packaging paper while improving the environment.

Mason County Forest Festival celebrates 70 years ! Eben Lehman | Forest History Society, Durham, NC Adapted with permission from internet article
A parade, a pageant, and Paul Bunyan. Mason County residents in 1945 had their own unique ideas of fire prevention. To help combat the destructive wildfires in the region — while also promoting the importance of forests to the local economy — Mason County hosted a forest festival in the spring of 1945. The festival featured a parade through downtown Shelton, a beauty pageant, a Paul Bunyan impersonator, and various other events and activities. The idea proved even more successful than imagined. Today’s event still prominently features a parade, pageant, and Paul Bunyan, just like back in 1945.
The history of Shelton is closely tied with logging operations in the area. In 1853, Michael T. Simmons built the first sawmill in Mason County on Mill Creek just south of present-day Shelton. Around this same time, David Shelton staked a settlement claim on a nearby inlet off Puget Sound.
Sol G. Simpson came to the area and founded the Simpson Logging Company in the 1890s. The Simpson Company would eventually grow and expand throughout the country, but Shelton served as an important center of operations for much of the following century. (continued next page)

“The purpose of this corporation shall be the development of a public consciousness of the need for forest fire prevention and an appreciation of the growing forests of Washington, and by making provision for staging in Shelton, or any other Mason County community, annually or at such intervals as may be deemed desirable, a suitable community forest festival consisting of displays, musical concerts, dramatic exhibitions, pageants, parades and/or other appropriate ceremonies, services and activities, in which all may participate and find education and enjoyment.” 1946 Mason County Forest Festival Association Mission Statement.

(continued from previous page) The area was also notable for being the home of the Shelton Cooperative Sustained-Yield Unit, which became active in 1946 and ended in 2002. The first Mason County Forest Festival in 1945 honored the area’s logging history by showcasing the value of timber to the community, while demonstrating the importance of safeguarding the forests against destructive fires. Fire prevention was a prominent theme, as the Mason County Forest Festival Association was at this time operated as an auxiliary of the local chapter of the Keep Washington Green Committee. Following that first festival – in which Lois Gibler was crowned Festival Queen and Gus Anderson played the part of Paul Bunyan – the event only grew.
People from the northwestern Washington region flocked to Shelton to see, in the words of an ad for the 12th annual Forest Festival, “the dramatic Forest Pageant, the thrilling parade and the exciting contests in which loggers demonstrate their skills at falling, bucking, tree topping and truck driving. For three memorable days, the communities participate in a program which you can’t afford to miss.” The idea of a forest festival quickly spread across the country along with the Keep Green program. “You have in Shelton, in my opinion, the best all-around forest festival in the United States,” read a quote from a mid-1950s article on the event. “It has been the inspiration of many forest communities throughout the U.S.”

The ninth annual Forest Festival in 1953 was one for the ages. The monumental event celebrated the 100th anniversary of logging operations in Mason County, and a large sign carved into a piece of Douglas fir was permanently dedicated in it’s location overlooking Shelton’s Oakland Bay. On the festival’s final day 30,000 people — about six times the
regular population of the town — crowded into Shelton to watch the Paul Bunyan Parade through downtown. See the cover for image of the 1953 parade. The 1953 event was an early high point for the festival, but there have been many other great moments throughout the years.
The 2014 theme,“Our Logging Legacy,” is a fitting tribute for 70 years and an opportunity to embrace and educate about our forestry heritage. The Mason County Forest Festival Association is a non-profit organization run by dedicated volunteers. No matter what your skills or interests the group has a vast array of tasks that need to be completed.
From preparations leading up to the event to helping out the weekend of Forest Festival, volunteers are needed. Please consider volunteering or serving on the board. With your help, the Mason County Forest Festival will continue to be a memorable event for everyone – young and old, lifelong residents, and visitors alike. For information visit masoncountyforestfestival.org.

A local court full of talent & grace The Mason County Forest Festival 2014 Coronation Ceremony was held Saturday March 8th at the Shelton High School Performing Arts Center. Mason County Students compete for Queen, Princess, Paul Bunyan and Smokey Bear! Mason County Forest Festival Coronation Ceremony organizer, Jessica Smith announced: “We had a great turn out, a total of 12 contestants applied to fill the 2014 Mason County Forest Festival Royalty Court. Because of the large number of kids applying, we’ve expanded the number of Princesses to four!” This year’s court includes: The Queen of the Forest, Princess of Cedar, Princess of Douglas Fir, Princess of Hemlock and Princess of Spruce. Plus, Paul Bunyan and Smokey Bear.”
The Queen and Paul Bunyan are required to be Mason County high school seniors and each student received locally funded scholarships. The selection process for the court included an interview prior to the Coronation Ceremony as well as a one page essay on the 2014 theme,“Our Logging Legacy.” The contestants presented their essays orally at the Coronation Program and answered impromptu questions. The court member selectied are shown on the following page.
Thank you to Cooper Studios who were on hand to beautifully capture images of the 2014 court as well as preserve many other Forest Festival memories!

Meet your Forest Festival
Alan Medina SHS Senior $1000 Scholarship provided by Skookum Rotary It’s fun getting to know other people on the Royalty Court. I can’t wait to put on the costume and wave at everyone at the Forest Festival Parade! After high school I plan on attending The Evergreen State College, to pursue my goal of becoming a successful person. I won’t quit until I reach my goals! Well, even once I reach my goals I will make new ones to keep me busy so I can accomplish them as well!
SHS Senior $500 Scholarship provided by Kristmas Town Kiwanis This is my second year on court, I was last year’s Princess of Cedar. I am a part time student at the New Market Skills Center in their Nursing Program. After high school I plan to attend the Olympic College in Shelton, transfering to Bremerton to complete their nursing program. After I earn my bachelor’s degree in nursing and graduate as an RN I would like to be a pediatric nurse. I am excited to be a part of the Forest Festival Royalty Court again and can’t wait to make memories with my fellow court members and travel around western Washington. They are wonderful memories that I will keep with me forever!
SHS Senior $500 Scholarship provided by Shelton Kiwanis I am involved in many clubs at school but especially in DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America). I have competed in the Area, State, and National level and have attended Leadership Conferences. After high school I am leaving on a mission for my church and then when I get back I will further my education at a four year university. Ever since I was 8 I knew I wanted to be on the Forest Festival Court and be part of the legacy of my home town. I feel honored to represent my town and I can’t wait for the wonderful things to come this year.
Anna Liljas SHS Senior $1000 Scholarship provided by Phyllis and Duane Guenther Memorial Scholarship Fund After graduating this June, I will be attending California Lutheran University and double-majoring in Business Administration and Music (with an emphasis in Piano Performance). Choir, Theatre, and Piano have been a huge part of my life! On sunny days, I enjoy wakeboarding and playing volleyball with my friends. Being selected as Queen of the Forest has been one of the best parts of senior year. I love representing Mason County and being part of Forest Festival 2014!
Shelbie Garrick SHS Junior $500 Scholarship provided by Christmas Village I am 17 years old, a junior at Shelton High School, and a part time Running Start student at Olympic College. I plan on graduating high school with my Associates degree then furthering my education at a university. I enjoy riding quads at the dunes, spending time with my family, and eating Xtra Cheddar Cheese Goldfish crackers. So far the best thing about being on Forest Festival royalty court is being more involved in my community, and spending time with my awesome fellow court members. I am proud to represent my county alongside them this year.
Sarah Miranda SHS Senior $500 Scholarship provided by Morning Star Lions Next fall I plan to attend South Puget Sound Community College and get my Associates degree. I plan to transfer to a four year university and major in Psychology. I enjoy playing tennis and helping out at Evergreen Elementary. I work at the Burger King uptown, so if anyone wants to say hello to a princess, swing on by! This year I am very thankful to be the Princess of Cedar and I'm excited to be part of the Forest Festival court. Being on court has given me an opportunity to really become part of this community and learn about everything our town has to offer and I couldn't ask for anything better!
SHS Senior $1000 Scholarship provided by Shelton Rotary Some of my hobbies include playing football and working out. I like hanging out with friends, family and my girlfriend. My favorite food would probably have to be fish & chips. This fall I will be attending Washington State University where I will try to walk-on for football next spring. Both of my older siblings were on the Forest Festival Court in previous years and it means a lot to me to carry on the tradition in my family by being Paul Bunyan in 2014!

Volunteers: Why do we do what we do ? Kay Pearson | MCFF secretary, 94.5 Roxy
For me – It is because I feel blessed to live in a small town where people can still do what we do. Where places like Nita’s Coffee Shop still exist and you can walk in and meet the 96-year young woman named Nita who puts her heart into every pie she bakes and every pancake she flips. Our town is filled with history – not just concrete. That’s why I love it. It’s a place for our kids to be “from” and I want to do all I can to help our kids feel proud to call Shelton home! My volunteer history with the Forest Festival began in 1998. I worked for KMAS AM radio then and owner Harold
Greenberg called me into his office and told me to “go find a committee and volunteer!” The MC Forest Festival Committee was a natural fit. I had previously lived in Leavenworth where my best friends were loggers –here I witnessed first-hand the start of the Leavenworth tourism push. Back then I served coffee to the committee
that planned the very first “Art in the Park” for the Autumn Leaf Festival! I remember their excitement when they had ten artists signed up! These events are their identity now! I began working for 94.5 Roxy in 2000 and I have continued to volunteer with the Forest Festival ever since.
Over the years, I’ve been blessed to meet many committed, talented and awesome people in our community! Now as one of 94.5 Roxy’s owners I continue to do all that I can to support my community of Shelton and Mason County. After all, I want my kids –and your kids– to be proud to call Shelton home!

Forest Festival Parade Grand Marshal -Nita Bariekman
LOCALLY
Carolyn Maddux | author
OWNED & OPERATED
This year’s Paul Bunyan Grand Parade Grand Marshal, is Nita Bariekman, owner of Nita’s Koffee Shop. Judy Bidwell, MCFFA President, expressed “When the Forest Festival Committee reached out to the community for Grand Marshal Nominations, Nita’s name came up again and again.” Among the mainstays of downtown Shelton is Nita’s Koffee Shop, and you haven’t experienced Shelton until you’ve had a piece of Nita’s blackberry pie. At 96, she still juggles making her signature pancakes for breakfast customers and baking pies for the lunch bunch, and she revels in visits from former Sheltonians who come back for a piece of pie and reminiscence. A lifelong Mason County resident, Nita Cleveland grew up in Allyn, the adored youngest of a warm, blended family that included five brothers and a sister. She married Jim Bariekman just before World War II, kept working as Dr. A.C. Linkletter’s receptionist until “Dr. Link” was called into the medical corps, and then did war work herself in the shipyard in Bremerton until the war ended and Jim returned from overseas.

Her pies have helped out numerous charitable causes over the years, and her milkshakes and lunch specials are legendary. Regulars are welcomed by name and visitors get to sign her guest book. In 1999, the Mason General Hospital Foundation honored Nita as one of the Businesswomen of the Year. These days, Nita’s nephews Kirby and Daryl Cleveland help her with shopping and record-keeping. But retire? She hasn’t thought much about it. “This is my family,” she says of her restaurant. “This is what keeps me going.”

70th annual Mason County Forest Festival hosts professional logging competition
2013 Forest Festival Photo: Cooper Studios.
MICK SPROUFFSKE | Vice President
Not only celebrating 70 years, in 2014 our event will be garnering national attention as our town becomes the location for the the STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Series Professional Western Qualifier, May 31. An event big enough for Paul Bunyan! In the fall of 2006 I saw an article in the Shelton-Mason County Journal that Mason County Forest Festival was holding its first meeting for the 2007 season and that they were looking for volunteers. Wanting to give back to my community I attended that meeting. When I was asked what I could offer or help with, I asked the question of why the logging show had been absent from Forest Festival the last year. That was how I started organizing the logging show. The first year I really didn’t have a clue as how to put on a show. I just knew that it was that it had been a few years since there had been a logging show as part of Forest Festival and that it was time to bring it back. That year we hired Fred Scheers Lumberjack Shows of Hayward Wisconsin. The shows were great however they created quite a stir. It turns out that we had someone right here in the Shelton area that had put on the Go Fourth Festival Logging Show in Longview for many years. In fact he, Dane Marbut, had competed on the National and World circuit.
At the time he and my brother, Alec, were working on the Narrows Bridge project together. He asked Alec who is the Sprouffske in Shelton that hired guys all the way from Wisconsin to put on a logging show in Shelton? So Dane helped me put together the show the following year at a cost of half the prior year and continues to help every year.
This year FOREST FESTIVAL will be hosting the STIHL ® TIMBERSPORTS ® Professional Western Qualifier. Established in 1985, the STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® Series assembles top lumberjacks from around the globe to compete. The Series is seen by over 20 million viewers annually in over 62 countries. Athletes compete in a variety of disciplines based on traditional logging skills to determine the best all-around lumberjack.

Disciplines include Hot Saw, Single Buck, Springboard Chop, Standing Block Chop, Stock Saw and Underhand Chop. The professionals in the Series compete in five regional professional qualifiers throughout America. This Series Professional events will be broadcasted on ABC Network. Since 2011, with the growing popularity of the Series and growth of international competitions, the U.S. Series has only been open to U.S. athletes in the regional qualifiers. (continued page 21)

27 2014 Forest Festival Program
Roots in Mason County run deep with Manke Lumber In the 1940’s Kellen Manke’s great-grandfather Elmer Manke began a family’s legacy as a timber, forestry, and logging family in the Pacific Northwest. He began with a small saw mill that consisted of a circle saw powered by an old Chevrolet car engine. He and his circle saw are the foundation for what was, and to many people still is, a crucial part of the economy in the logging town of Shelton, Washington. Today Shelton has become more than a logging town, but its timber ties are evidenced by Forest Festival, “High Climbers” and the waterfront dominated by the wood products industry. Elmer Manke worked hard to create and pass on a family business that now owns and manages 60,000 acres in private timberlands, employs 490 people and has three locations in Shelton, Tacoma, and Sumner. Toward the end of the 1940’s and the beginning of the 1950’s Elmer diversified to growing and cutting Christmas trees. The profits from the Christmas trees and the small saw mill allowed him to purchase a portable saw mill. In 1952, with the portable saw mill, Elmer Manke, and sons, Virgil Manke and Chuck Manke, founded Manke & Sons Inc. In 1963, Manke & Sons acquired a plot of land on the north bank of the port of Tacoma. This became the first mill of Manke Lumber Company.
Manke & Sons changed its name to Manke Lumber Company in 1965 when Elmer retired from the lumber business. Being from North Dakota he preferred to farm Christmas trees as it was similar to farming back home. Today Manke Lumber Company is a still a family owned business with ties to virtually every aspect of the wood products industry. From the forest, to retailers, to residential and commercial projects, Manke Lumber offers a variety of quality services and industry leading products for the wholesale market. Relying on experience from over 50 years of hands-on operation, Manke Lumber continues to explore new technologies and business practices to protect resources and provide value to customers. Their business now consists of major categories: forestry management, saw milling, wood pellet manufacturing, wood treating and more recently a gravel mine in Shelton that will mine gravel for the next 150 years.
2014 Forest Festival Program

From small scale volume of lumber, between a father and his sons, to today cutting approximately 150 million board feet per year, today Manke is a respectively large lumber company. With over six decades of hard work and good decisions Manke Lumber has succeeded in providing jobs for 490 employees (many that have been employed over 40 years). Coordinating with local tribes, Dept. of Natural Resources, WA Dept. of Fish and Wildlife, and Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group, Manke Lumber is committed to using best practices on any land they harvest to ensure healthy forests and streams for generations to come. Manke Lumber is also proud that most of their lands are open to non-motorized recreational access. “The Forest Festival is an important way in which Manke Lumber honors and celebrate our community’s heritage and the great efforts of our family, friends, and employees since the company’s beginnings,” replies Kellen when asked what the
Mason County Forest Festival means to him, “We are proud to be the sponsor of the fireworks show for the Forest Festival.” Annually Manke Lumber provides the funding to support the spectacular fireworks show Saturday evening of the Forest Festival event. The community thanks them for their tremendous generousity! Speaking of her memories of the Forest Festival Joan Manke, wife of Virgil spoke of Judy, wife of Chuck Manke, “When the kids were little, Judy Manke and I, along with many other families, would get our kids new outfits and we would sit and watch the parade like it was an Easter event. We would wear our best attire and the day would be followed up by dinner with friends and family. It was a traditional event to celebrate our way of life.” Throughout Shelton many families share these memories. Thank you Manke Lumber and Manke family for your continued commitment to Mason County now and into the future!

Every day is Forest Festival for Green Diamond PATTI CASE | Green Diamond
GREEN DIAMOND’S employees are responsible for such diverse activities in the forest as planting 2 million-plus trees per year, laying out harvest units with protection for fish, wildlife and clean water, logging trees to be made into homes and other wood products around the world, or providing support to these management activities, the employees at Green Diamond celebrate Forest Festival every day.
A RICH HISTORY
Forest Festival is an iconic event here in Mason County, dating back 70 years. As a major forest products enterprise in Mason County, Green Diamond Resource Company is an ardent supporter of Forest Festival. “So many people have kept this tradition alive over the years,” said Paul Wing, vice president and general manager of Green Diamond’s Northwest Division, based in Shelton.
PAUL WING, vice president and general manager of Green Diamond’s Northwest Division, based in Shelton
“On behalf of Green Diamond and the forest products industry, I want to thank each of the hard-working volunteers who are carrying this legacy forward today.” Wing and others at Green Diamond remember as children watching the parade, logging show and other traditions of the Forest Festival. With older siblings in the North Mason High School band, Wing sat on the sidelines during many a parade. Later, Wing was a participant himself in the Forest Festival festivities. As a senior at North Mason High School in 1974, he was chosen as Paul Bunyan. He remembers having to maneuver the giant ax and duck, to get under the power lines. Today’s Paul Bunyan stands on a platform midway up the stack of logs, instead of perching on top and risking disaster.
Wing saw his first logging show that same year. “It was fascinating to see how quickly the contestants could chop through logs, the big chips flying every which way,” he recalled. “And the hot chain saws – as a teenage boy anything destructive was attractive.”
LOGGING SHOWS – AND REAL LIFE
Still, logging can be a dangerous business, which is why Green Diamond is particularly proud of its logging crew’s safety record. The crew hasn’t had a lost time accident in over seven years, an extraordinary feat for such hazardous work. “It’s particularly impressive when you consider that over half of our crew has been on the job five years or less,” Wing commented.
Most of the heart-pumping skills exhibited in the logging show are relics from days of old. “These days, we try to get as many people as possible into machine cabs and out of harm’s way,” said Wing.

FOREST FESTIVAL FIELD DAY One of Green Diamond’s unique contributions to Forest Festival is a field day, open to 5th graders throughout Mason County. Each year, some 400 students descend on Panhandle Lake 4H Camp to learn the value of a tree, an applied math exercise; the habitat in a streamside buffer; a little of forest history, including the teamwork required in operating a crosscut saw; how to set a choker and fell a tree; and how “round” logs are made into “square” lumber, among other lessons. The field day has been an educational component of Forest Festival since 2000.

Music Richard Nance (b. 1955, Hobbs, NM) is Director of Choral Activities at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington. He is also the professor of music and conductor of the Choir of the West and the PLU Choral Union at Pacific Lutheran University. His choirs have been selected to perform at professional music conferences and have toured Europe. Dr. Nance is nationally recognized as a composer and is a leader in the American Choral Directors Association.
Randall Thompson (b. 1899, Boston; d. 1984, Cambridge, MA) was an American composer particularly noted for his choral works.
Gwyneth Walker (b. 1947, New York City), American composer, gre up in Connecticut. She is a graduate of Brown University and the Hartt School of Music, holds B.A., M.M. and D.M.A. degrees in music composition. In 1982, after serving on the faculty of Oberlin College Conservatory, she left to pursue her career as a full-time composer. For almost 30 years, she lived on a dairy farm in Braintree, VT and now lives primarily in New Canaan, CT, her childhood home. Walker’s music catalog includes over 300 commissioned works for orchestra, chamber ensembles, chorus, and solo voice. The Quaker hymn, “How Can I Keep from Singing,” which dates back to the 1800s in the US, is a particular favorite of hers and her arrangement emphasizes the celebratory and lifeaffirming aspects of the song.
Robert Lee Frost (b. 1874, San Francisco; d. 1963, Boston): Surprisingly, this thoroughly American poet’s work was initially published in England before it was published in America. Frost is highly regarded for his realistic depictions of rural life and his command of American colloquial speech. His work frequently employed settings from New England rural life in the early 20th century, using them to examine complex social and philosophical themes. One of the most popular and critically respected American poets, Frost was honored frequently during his lifetime, receiving four Pulitzers and the Congressional Gold Medal.
Frostiana: Seven Country Songs was composed in 1959 by Randall Thompson who was commissioned by the town of Amherst, MA to write a piece for its bicentennial in 1959. The town was long associated with American poet Robert Frost and accordingly, the town chose Thompson, a friend of Frost’s, to write a commemorative work set to some of Frost’s poetry. Frostiana premiered on October 18, 1959, and Thompson later scored the piece for chamber orchestra and chorus, which was first performed on April 23, 1965.
He attended Harvard, became assistant professor of music and choir director at Wellesley College, and received a doctorate in music from the University of Rochester’s Eastman School of Music. Dr. Thompson’s most recognizable and popular choral work is “Alleluia,” commissioned by Serge Koussevitzky for the opening music festival at Tanglewood in 1941.
The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass blends the classical mass, modern choral sophistication, touching poetry and traditional bluegrass instrumentation into an exhilarating musical experience and has been brilliantly executed by composer Carol Barnett and librettist Marisha Chamberlain. The work was commissioned for VocalEssence, a Minnesota-based professional choral group led by Philip Brunelle, and was originally premiered by VocalEssence with the five-member bluegrass band, Monroe Crossing.

She attended college at Macalester in St. Paul, MN and remains a resident of that area. She has held fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Rockefeller, Bush, McKnight, and Jerome Foundations and has been artist in residence at the MacDowell Colony, the Anderson Center and the Rockefeller Foundation Center at Bellagio. Paul & Babe welcome you to the Parade One of the most famous and popular North American folklore heroes, Paul is usually described as a giant as well as a lumberjack of unusual skill, and is often accompanied in stories by his animal companion, Babe the Blue Ox. Over 30 states and nine provinces have some form of giant Bunyan to be proud of. Shelton is no exception. In the early 1960’s, the Bingers Brothers brought Paul Bunyan, a fiberglass statue of legendary proportions to stand tall overlooking the local Binger gas station in Shelton. Through Paul’s history in Shelton he had many faces and many locations, until he eventually fell into ruin. In 1995, Lloyd Prouty and a group of friends stepped forward and took on the daunting task to restore Paul. Later Babe was added to his side. With the restoration of Paul and Babe, Mason County has been able to step back into the ranks of the communities throughout North America that celebrate the heritage that is represented by these logging folk lore legends.
As the Paul Bunyan Grand Parade passes by on May 31 be sure to check out the hydraulic limbo action as Paul navigates the power lines!

We need to look no farther than ingenuity and integrity of this community for the resources to enhance and honor this heritage even more. Paul Bunyan and Blue are iconic mascots for Shelton and Mason County, visiting parade and festivals throughout the Northwest. They are also great draws for tourists to the area. Thank you, Lloyd Prouty, for dreaming big -really BIG- and bringing us Paul and Babe. Thank you also to all the sponsors and contributors to this project!

“Biggest Crowd?”
“Estimating Forest Festival crowd is at best a nebulous job, but from a source which should be as accurate as any comes the guess that this year’s crowd at the Paul Bunyan Parade was the largest yet. State Trooper Harry Deshields, who has patrolled the parade route for many years on his motorcycle, says it is so.”
