A NOTE OF THANKS “In this bright future, you can’t forget your past .” – Bob Marley Thank you . Thank you for being part of our past, present, and future . Thank you for trusting in our commitment to engage, delight, and challenge you through our programming—for enjoying the familiar afresh and for exploring the unknown . Thank you for embracing our commitment to equity in making the arts accessible and palpable to the youngest members of our community, whether in our venues or in their classrooms . When I listen to the extraordinary, wise, and vulnerable memories shared by those who are featured in our 50 Years, 50 Stories series, I am moved by the gratitude, sense of connection, and impact that Washington Performing Arts has had upon lives . This organization means so much to so many people . From a gift subscription for newlyweds that ignited a lifelong love of the arts, to the path taken by a young man who grew up in our Children of the Gospel Choir and followed his calling to a career as an acclaimed opera star, Washington Performing Arts’ true value is measured by the experiences people have when they’re with us (onstage or off), and how that experience lingers over time, enriching their lives and worldview, and touching their hearts and minds . In this special Annual Report, we are thrilled to share pivotal moments that shaped our 50th Anniversary Season, and to tease out aspirations for the future . We also wanted to place special emphasis upon collaborations, bold new efforts to amplify signature programs, and the sense of scale and impact to which we aspire . We look forward to sharing the “bright future” with you . Thank you for being part of the Washington Performing Arts family!

50 YEARS… AND COUNTING! We are thrilled to share this overview of our 2016/17 50th Anniversary Season with you! Milestone anniversaries are a perfect time for reflection, and throughout the past year, we looked back with pride upon our half-century history: Founded in 1966 by the D .C .-based impresario Patrick Hayes as one of the nation’s first non-profit performing arts organizations, the Washington Performing Arts Society (as it was then known) grew to become the region’s premier presenter of touring orchestras and recitalists; an eclectic and enthusiastic supporter of jazz, world music, and dance in venues throughout the Greater D .C . area; and one of the first and most committed proponents of gospel music on the concert stage—among many other programs and initiatives . Anniversaries are also, of course, a time for celebration . Throughout the 2016/17 Season, we focused our festive energies on the people who made the past 50 years possible: our vast and diverse community, comprising generations of artists, audience members, individual donors, students and teachers, parents and caregivers, foundation and government partners, corporate sponsors, staff and board members, our long-running and devoted Women’s Committee, embassy partners, our brand-new Junior Board, and many others . Our celebration is their (and your) celebration, and throughout the year, we told our story through our supporters’ voices—as in our expansive video interview project, 50 Years, 50 Stories (see opposite page) . Lastly, anniversaries are a time for looking forward . Throughout the collection of 2016/17 Season Spotlights that follow, you will see the fundamental elements that have shaped Washington Performing Arts’ 50th Anniversary, and will inform the next 50 years: weaving performance and cultural history into innovative and diverse arts, education, and community programming (The Migration Project); highlighting D .C .’s unique cosmopolitan expression of The World in Our City (Kronos Quartet residency); pioneering new approaches to orchestral music (SHIFT Festival); and championing a universally relevant, and perennially inspiring art form born in the African American community (Men, Women, and Children of the Gospel Choirs) . Guiding all of these new efforts—and all those that preceded them—is the simple, yet powerful message of inclusion with which Mr . Hayes inaugurated this organization a half-century ago: Everybody In, Nobody Out. 4

THE MIGRATION: REFLECTIONS ON JACOB LAWRENCE From the theater stage to the city’s streets, Washington Performing Arts’ 50th Anniversary season-opening celebration exemplified the organization’s longstanding dedication to collaboration and partnerships that yield unique programming and new works . The multi-day exploration of artistry and movement drew on our deep community ties to include performances, events, and panel discussions that allowed audiences to connect with themes expressed on the mainstage .

In partnership with Step Afrika!, Washington Performing Arts commissioned an expanded production to remount the dance work The Migration: Reflections on Jacob Lawrence, initially conceived in 2011 in a Step Afrika!/Phillips Collection collaboration to honor the renowned African American 20th-century artist. The new production—celebrating the reunification of Lawrence’s complete 60-panel masterwork in a co-exhibition by the Phillips Collection and MoMA—blended dance, projected images of Lawrence’s paintings, and music styles from jazz to spirituals, with a cameo appearance by our Men and Women of the Gospel Choir. Washington Performing Arts’ Mars Urban Arts Initiative (MUAl), launched in 2014 to facilitate conversation and creativity on a grassroots level in neighborhoods across the city, organized several community events to complement the performance. These included two panel discussions, the first exploring the deep music traditions of black religious communities, and the second about the history and significance of Jacob Lawrence’s works and their influence on The Migration, plus a Lantern Walk (pictured at right).

The event featured a lantern-making workshop and performances by local artists. 7

KRONOS QUARTET IN RESIDENCE The second year of Washington Performing Arts’ five-year partnership with the acclaimed, San Francisco-based Kronos Quartet celebrated our joint commitment to international understanding and exchange through continued support for the Fifty for the Future commissioning project, thought-provoking programs with artistic and cultural institutions, an ongoing collaboration with the Embassy Adoption Program, and mainstage performances— borne out over the course of a four-day residency involving students, artists, and members of the community . The activities of the Kronos residency underscored the central values of global citizenry and diplomacy that form the foundation of The World in Our City initiative, developed during the 2016/17 Season .

Residency Activities In partnership with Kronos Quartet, Washington Performing Arts’ Embassy Adoption Program (EAP) connected three D.C. Public Schools with four embassies [Israel, Mexico, the Netherlands, and Turkey] to attend a performance and discussion with quartet members about translating the sounds of other cultures through western instruments. Kronos founder and violinist David Harrington hosted a listening party at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace for young professional patrons and members of Washington Performing Arts’ Junior Board. He discussed the Quartet’s international travels, and played examples of music that have influenced the Kronos repertoire. Washington Performing Arts’ Mars Urban Arts Initiative hosted a panel discussion at the Mexican Cultural Institute featuring David Harrington with local artists, diplomats, arts managers, and cultural leaders on the subject of valuing and sustaining cultural identities. Kronos Quartet’s first Washington Performing Arts concert in 15 years included repertoire from around the world, featuring new works created through the Quartet’s commissioning, residency, and educational project Fifty for the Future: The Kronos Learning Repertoire.

A quarter of a century after the founding of the Washington Performing Arts’ resident youth and adult gospel choirs, we are poised to reinvest in and elevate these signature ensembles by redefining the curriculum for both choirs, developing leadership training and a mentoring program for the Children of the Gospel (COTG), and hiring new dedicated staff to facilitate our choirs’ commitment to excellence and growth. A generous multi-year gift from Jeffrey Bauman and Linda Fienberg, as well as the foundation of the Charlotte Schlosberg Scholarships for Vocal Coaching by Hubert “Hank” Schlosberg and the Schlosberg Family, fueled the evolution and implementation of the new plans in the 2016/17 Season.
The Gospel Choirs’ Silver Jubilee performance debuted two brand new, commissioned works— one created by American folk/blues musician Toshi Reagon, and the second composed especially for our choirs by longtime MWOTG artistic director Stanley J. Thurston, who assumes the role of Artistic Director Emeritus in the 2017/18 Season.
