You Made it Happen: Annual Report 2017/18 Season
A Day in the Life of Washington Performing Arts It’s my pleasure to share this dynamic overview of our 2017/18 Season! Our aim is to say “thank you” by showing the impact of your generosity every day – upon people of all ages, whether they’re on stage, in the classroom/practice room, or in the audience. We hope that in the abundance of photos you’ll see yourself, or be reminded of a program or event that changed the course of your day. Thinking it would be fun to give you a flavor of what you help us accomplish, we offer you a typical day in the life of Washington Performing Arts… MORNING: Teaching artists from our Capital Arts Partnership program fan out to 29 D.C. classrooms, teaching students how to tune violins, rehearse songs, or approach music theory. Meanwhile, a worldrenowned piano recitalist lands at Dulles, anticipating a full day ahead. And back at our office, our programming team engages a local artist to perform in a talked-about new venue through our Mars Urban Arts Initiative. AFTERNOON: An embassy diplomat visits one of the 80 participating D.C. Public School classrooms (in all eight wards) in the Embassy Adoption Program, expanding students’ horizons with stories and songs of his homeland. Across town, a group of seniors gathers in a community center to enjoy a swinging jazz quartet, courtesy of our Enriching Experiences program. Meanwhile, the world-renowned pianist demonstrates the joy and wonder of her instrument for elementary students before conducting a master-class with aspiring adult musicians. EVENING: Our Junior Board of 30+ young professionals meets at our office to plan a series of pre-concert social and philanthropic events, while over at Shiloh Baptist Church, our Children of the Gospel Choir rehearses for an upcoming performance with our Men and Women of the Gospel at the Kennedy Center—where, at this very moment, our world-renowned recitalist is taking the stage for a concert, whose audience includes 50 young people attending with discounted Gateway Student Tickets. Thank you for welcoming us into your lives and for being part of ours. And thank you for the visions of generosity and warmth that grace these pages.

Orchestras Beyond Boundaries In 2017/18 we continued to explore and explode what is possible for presenting orchestras and ensembles—and, in the process, how to surprise, engage, move, and delight audiences of all generations.

What is an orchestra?
In 2017/18 it meant many things: kicking off the season with the groundbreaking string ensemble the Sphinx Virtuosi; a Bernstein tribute led by the legendary U.S. Air Force Band; the world premiere of The Blue Hour, developed in a collaboration between five composers for A Far Cry ensemble; and a live-streamed evening with Ensemble Signal devoted to the work of Steve Reich, presented in partnership with the Library of Congress.

Getting contemporary Music plus
The 2018 SHIFT Festival offered multiple opportunities to expand audience experiences in new directions. The Indianapolis Symphony presented two fun, intergenerational lifelong learning programs—and Fort Worth Symphony fused music and dance to great effect.
During the 2018 SHIFT Festival, Albany Symphony’s resident ensemble, Dogs of Desire, lit up Blind Whino—a cutting-edge, multi-use performance space in southwest Washington, D.C. A partnership with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the SHIFT Festival featured four forward-thinking American orchestras in a weeklong series of performances and musical experiences that reimagined the symphonic experience for a new era.
Local connections
Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, led by Gustavo Dudamel, featured members of the Chamber Choir of The Catholic University of America, Choral Arts Society of Washington, The Washington Chorus, and the Men and Women of the Gospel Choir.

Nexus: Paul Huang Commissioning new work, connecting main stage artists to promising young talents, creating unique cultural experiences with diplomatic partners‌.What do all of these have in common? In 2017/18 at Washington Performing Arts: violinist Paul Huang.
6
Nurturing young artists
Providing a platform for some of the world’s finest emerging artists to perform has been a critical component of Washington Performing Arts’ presentation strategy from its earliest days. Paul Huang has been a part of our season four times since his Washington Performing Arts debut in 2012, while his artistic collaborator Conrad Tao made his debut in 2018 on our Hayes Series of recitals featuring keyboard artists.
Celebrating the World in Our City
This season we collaborated with the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States (TECRO) to produce two events featuring Paul Huang at historic Twin Oaks, Taiwan’s stately diplomatic home in Washington.

Washington Performing Arts commissioned composer-pianist Conrad Tao to write Threads of Contact for violin and piano. The piece was performed at the Kennedy Center by Paul Huang in April and was featured in a public coaching with Huang for the winner of our Feder Competition for aspiring young musicians at Twin Oaks in June.
Embassies and diplomatic entities participated in our Embassy Adoption Program in 2017/18 (a partnership with D.C. Public Schools).

Innovation through Collaboration We believe in collaboration to the core and that—through an exceptional array of diverse partnerships—we can reach more people, leaning into our “Everybody In, Nobody Out” ethos in ever-more dynamic ways.

New platforms, new programs On the edge
Cutting edge, that is. Our standing-room-only SHIFT community residency for the Indianapolis Symphony—featuring classical garage band Time for Three—was held at The LINE DC, one of the District’s hippest hotels, setting the stage for a season-long collaboration with The LINE in 2018/19.
Exponential reach
We reached audiences around the globe through three unique partnerdriven collaborations. Viewers online experienced Kronos Quartet and Wu Man in a masterclass with U.S. Army Band musicians, while gospel and new music fans witnessed the Children of the Gospel Choir’s Millennium Stage debut at the Kennedy Center and our evening of homage to Steve Reich, featuring Ensemble Signal and produced with the Library of Congress.
5 World
Premieres in 2017/18
We launched two new programs in partnership with D.C. Public Schools in 2017/18: D.C. Keys, a 12-year longitudinal initiative that teaches every student how to play the piano and compose, and the D.C. Honor Ensembles, a showcase for the District’s most promising instrumentalists and singers (in partnership with the Washington Chorus).
A haven for new music
2017/18 saw collaboration between artists with the WPA-co-commissioned premieres of The Blue Hour, a two-hour song cycle developed by Rachel Grimes, Sarah Kirkland Snider, Angélica Negrón, Shara Nova, and Caroline Shaw for A Far Cry (Sixth & I), and Steve Reich’s Runner, written for Ensemble Signal (Library of Congress).
How Do We Listen?
Another artistic collaboration took place between WPA Artistin-Residence Murray Horwitz and jazz pianist Aaron Diehl, who jointly answered this question in explorations of rhythm, melody, and harmony over a three-part series at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery—a new venue for us. The series gave our audiences a multifaceted look at the foundations of music, opening up possibilities for deeper understanding as we continue to explore our range of possibilities as a producerpresenter of original content for lifelong learners.

Mars Urban Arts Initiative: New Vistas; New Venues In 2017/18, the Mars Urban Arts Initiative’s (MUAI) programming, geographic footprint, and visibility reached new heights. Developed as a creative platform to celebrate and empower local artists, MUAI’s performances, educational programs, and collaborations continued to showcase the diversity and vitality of our city. The year featured the launch of the MUAI artist-in-residence program, which increased opportunities for synergy across programs and stakeholder groups.
Cheick Hamala Diabate of Mali performed at MarketSW for the World in Our City MUAI Showcase in October 2017. Events joining our MUAI and World in Our City initiatives offered opportunities to feature D.C.based global artists in performances presented around the city.
2017/18 MUAI Artist-in-Residence, violinist and vocalist Dr. Chelsey Green, performed at Music Distilled, an interactive performance and social event presented by the Junior Board at Republic Restoratives. Eight Artist-inResidence events were presented this year—reaching nearly 1,000 people.
Politics & Art SongriseDC performed at Politics & Art. Nearly 300 people attended and 80 artists performed at the eveninglong event celebrating vocal and spoken word artists.
LOC Concerts on the Lawn Batalá Washington performed at the inaugural Summer Concerts on the Lawn. Five concerts on the Library of Congress lawn featuring a range of artists in seven acts drew a total new audience of more than 1,000 people.

Gospel Choirs at Washington Performing Arts: A New Vision Our celebrated resident ensembles continue to dazzle audiences with their inspiring performances of traditional and contemporary gospel music that serve to uplift, comfort, and motivate all who hear them.
Men and Women of the Gospel Choir
Theodore Thorpe III completed his inaugural season as the artistic director of the Men and Women of the Gospel Choir, continuing to hone the ensemble’s artistry and bringing new music to its repertoire. A season-ending workshop featured noted local gospel artists/composers Patrick Lundy, Roderick Giles, and Phillip Carter, who taught their original compositions. These new works will be showcased in performances during the 2018/19 season.
Children of the Gospel Choir
In 2017/18, the Children of the Gospel Choir (COTG), led by Artistic Director, Michele Fowlin, made a triumphant solo return to the mainstage for its 25th anniversary celebration, Stay Woke, Still Woke, a youth-driven musical exploration of social consciousness and action through repertoire spanning multiple eras, cultures, and genres. The COTG program provides numerous opportunities for students to develop their artistic and leadership skills, including scholarship support for select students to further their studies. The Charlotte Schlosberg Vocal Scholarship provides oneon-one vocal coaching to students chosen for their talent, potential for artistic growth, and steadfast commitment to the COTG. A new award—”The Reggie”—was established in 2018 to recognize a COTG graduate who embodies the values of outgoing Board Chair Reginald Van Lee: self discipline, high goals and achievements, good cheer and generosity, enthusiasm for the arts, and commitment to a broader education.
