Ypsilanti Food Co-op

If you shop at Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods or Zerbos, you enjoy the availability of organic produce, locally sourced products, cage-free eggs and other natural products. Many of these specialty items were first available at food cooperatives or co-ops.

The mission of the Ypsilanti Food Co-op, which was incorporated in 1975, is to provide high-quality food and goods that are produced ecologically and sustainably, while practicing cooperative economics. The Food Co-op has served the community well over the years, and during the pandemic, rapid, somewhat unexpected growth occurred, increasing sales.

With the help of the MI-Small Business Development Center’s (SBDC) Ron Stevens, associate regional director and business consultant, the Co-op continues to grow and be a vital pillar in the community. “Ron Stevens has helped me to turn volunteers into staff, enhance communication with our board, develop budgets, assist with an expansion project, walk us through the process of borrowing money and help us manage our recent growth plans,” shares Corinne Sikorski, general manager of the Co-op.

During their recent expansion into a new café, bakery, and prepared food counter, MI-SBDC’s Stevens helped with understanding the costs of adding a different operation to the portfolio, budgeting and securing funding.

Want to grow your small business? SBDC can help.

Excel: Advanced Logical and Statistical Functions

Online Trainer

Clair Dickson helps people who work with data to maximize those skills by teaching the Microsoft Excel and Smartsheet programs at Washtenaw Community College. Today’s focus on data management motivates her. “Aside from being fun to see formulas and visualization in action, Excel is an in-demand skill for all levels of jobs in many fields.”

Along with coaching Excel and Smartsheet, Clair provides online and print resources for teachers on a freelance basis. She has degrees in Secondary and History education from Eastern Michigan University, a 4-year institution she transferred to seamlessly from WCC. She has taught secondary and post-secondary students online and faceto-face since.

“I have a particular fondness for non-traditional education paths and for WCC, since my time as a student,” she says. Excel and its power and possibilities became a fascination for her during an early gig as a junior instructional designer. She eventually obtained Microsoft Office Master Certification (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook) and has taught Excel online for over 4 years.

In this class, we will explore basic statistical mean, mode and median operations using IF and IFS groups for calculations. We will also cover SUMIFS for data and the logical functions of AND, OR and NOT to work with complex calculations for data analysis.
