The Final GIG

30th of October 2010 and here I am at the Legendary Leo’s Red Lion in Gravesend. There is a small group of people hanging outside and a few in the venue, this just feels like your average Saturday gig but we all know that today is very special day! Today is Denounce’s last gig before they break up! What a line up we have in store for us. This is going to be an awesome day!

Who are they? Black Market Karma are a psychedelic rock’n’roll band from South East London influencedby the likes of--The Velvet Underground, Spacemen 3, My Bloody Valentine, The Rolling Stones, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Jesus & Mary Chain, Spiritualized, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Black

ing “Celebration Days” festival out in the French countryside. The show was great, top vibe that night. We’re hoping it starts to get the exposure it deserves. The event’s only been held twice, but both times it’s been a stonker. You should check this one out people, big time!

Rebel Motorcycle Club, Nirvana etc. That about sums us up I reckon?

What have they been doing? We’ve spent the last few months playing as

Abandon The Faith: 8/10 Are first to take the stage today, they have a very tough job in front of them, starting an all dayer is never easy, especially one as big as this, but they pull it off very well! I enter the venue just as they start playing, its like a fucking wall of sound! These guys know how to get a crowd going. “Its too fucking early for this” says Adam (Vocalist), Sporting his Denounce t-shirt. This band have the perfect mix between Hardcore Metal, Deathly Vocals and nice synth keys. Epic beat downs, Blast Beats, Chugging Guitars and brilliant solos. The band are showing they truly deserve a place on this bill. “Fall To Your Knees” was may favourite song of the set, I like the way the drums and keys bring in the song, Adam gets into the pit to head bang with the crowd as the room is filling up! Another song I enjoyed a lot was “Down In Flames”, this band know how to add a good beat down to a strong song and how to please an audience, with their feet up on the monitors and nodding their heads along with everyone else. Avenge Thee + Naime: 8/10 Opening with their new single “Ear Of The Horse” gets the crowd really interested! Adam (Vocalist) gets straight into the pit getting up in peoples faces and telling them to suck his balls etc. Their set doesn’t start off great as there is a few problems with the bass equipment, but this is soon fixed and everything is fine. The band are really going for it, throwing themselves all over the place, knocking

out tune after tune, everyone is really enjoying this Spazzy set from the Hardcore 4 piece. George Coleman from Passion For Cats is sitting on the drum stall, playing in place of Chainy Rabbit for the day, really pounding those skins like the old Arcades days! The band are used to playing off stage in the crowd but they are pulling it off on stage for the day. As they end Adam gives a big shout out to the next band. . . Cursed As Angels: 7/10 The God parents of local Metal take to the stage, fully suited and booted in gory Halloween outfits. Considering how long Cursed As Angels have been around it is a surprise they are on so early in the day. “HOW WE DOING?” the crowd go crazy for the Metal 5 piece! “ARE WE HAVING A GOOD TIME

GRAVESEND?” They slam into their next tune, it’s a good one, “River”. The crowd are loving the local heroes, everyone is nodding their heads and singing along to the songs! Odessa Step Sequence: 7/10 The band go on later then scheduled due to some transport issues. Still a bass player down they get on with it and begin their set, the crowd aren’t going to wait any longer. FILTHY! This band are fucking sickening. . . in a good way! Duel guitar riffs and chugging break downs. The drums are fast pace and the vocals are hard hitting. Bursting out with fast solos. This is a really impressive set for a band who hardly had a sound check and are missing a member. They quickly go through their songs to try and make up time. They really ripped up the stage. I haven’t heard this band before but im sure it wont be the last time I hear them, I will definitely check them out again, won’t forget this set! Local Mad Man: 6/10 “We’re here, we’re shit, get used to it”, wise words from the Local Mad Man’s front Man as they kick off their set. Shouty Punk 4 piece are a man down tonight, the second band without a bass player, so surviving on drums, guitar and vocals, but they handle the situation well. “We haven’t played together since march”. The band have a very DIY sound, its really energetic, the vocalist is pacing up and down the stage and jumping around like a crazy man, I can see how they got their name! Sadly the room isn’t as packed

as it was earlier but I don’t think the music is every ones cup of tea. It is very energetic music but I’m going to have to say the band isn’t really doing it for me at all, as they say, each to their own.

just whats needed here to get the crowd going. Commanding the audience with filthy break downs and some real heavy riffs. “Gravesend where the fuck are ya?” This bnd really know how to get this room pumping.

Consecration: 6/10 Take the stage with what I can only explain as their take on Groove / Psychedelic / Death Metal, it’s a very strange mix and im not to sure if it works, it seems a bit to self indulgent, very crazy and far out. I can’t seem to take my eyes off the two people at the front of the stage head banging out of time! That did make me laugh a bit. I spoke to some of the members earlier in the day and they were very excited about playing, really nice guys but I just think the music is a little bit too weak, it seems like it needs a bit more work. There is a fair few people here watching the set so you can’t argue with that, but I’m not a fan myself. I like experimental music but I think this is a little bit too experimental for me.

Denounce: 10/10 7 years. It started and now it ends at Leo’s Red Lion. The band are sound checking as Greg pushes his way through the crowd to the stage. Their set hasn’t even started yet and the room is rammed, you can’t move at all and there are still people outside waiting to get in. This is possibly one of the biggest gigs leo’s has hosted in its history. As Jamie said to me outside before the gig, “It’s a shame it takes a band splitting up to put on a gig like this”. Silence as the bands intro music plays, people start to clap and cheer and Denounce drop into their 1st song of their last show, the crowd erupts. This is amazing and they haven’t even finished their 1st song. Dayve and Jamie’s solos put other guitarists of the dy to shame, tapping, sweeping and pinch harmonics everywhere. Such a fast pace band, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out this band should not be breaking up! It is a true shame when a band like this give up after 7 years, they should be playing main stage festivals all over the world. “ Seriously man, we are fucking blown away by the amount of people here” says Greg, “your awesome and its been a fucking pleasure playing for you over the past 7 years. So this goes out to everyone here”. I’ve never seen movement like this at Leo’s, it is a sight to behold. As if out of no where this beat down appears and everyone head bangs in unison. People are immerging from the pit covered in sweat and staggering towards the front door just to get some air, outside its brace monkeys but in here its as hot as a desert. Leon is moving his hands all over the fret bored of his bass with ease, the band are all head banging together, its amazing to watch. Tonight the boys have proved that metal does have a sense of humour. For the first and last time

The Kick Kick Murder Squad: 8/10 Here we have it, the long awaited return of The Kick Kick Murder Squad. Noise, noise and MORE FUCKING NOISE!!! The Hardcore Punk 3 piece are back together and ready to fuck shit up. I have always thought fast drumming is essential in this kind of music, but fast isn’t the word here, the word is crazy. Riff after riff of Groovy hard hitting goodness that won’t disappoint. It just makes you want to dance, jump, punch or make love (or all 4 at once!). Straight Forward, Loud, Fast Punk, quick and to the point. No song over 3 minutes long,

some songs are even struggling to push past 2 minutes! Sadly I never got to see The Kick Kick Murder Squad before they broke up so I’m so glad they have got together again and I had the chance to see them finally. Thoroughly enjoyable and my favourite band of the day so far, im glad im here right now. Messy and fucked up, but I love it. That’s how it should be! Silent Descent: 8/10 Silent Descent, the Trance Metal 7 piece, back at the lion. Everyone knows there were a lot of rumours that Silent Descent and Denounce hated each other but tonight proves these rumours wrong as SD come to support Denounce in their last ever show. “Good evening red lion, how you doing?” they burst into a song off their last album “Anagram”, it’s a real heavy old tune for all the fans! I know there are a lot of people that don’t like Silent Descent but even they can’t deny the wall of sound being thrust upon them. The band are really going for it today despite technical difficulties. For the 1st time today the crowd is REALLY moving, the pit is going crazy with arms and drinks flying everywhere. “I want everyone to give it up for Denounce, without them we wouldn’t be doing this. Some shitty Trance bull shit compared to them guys”. Everyone is loving SD being back. Just before they go into their last song, “This ones for all the people who don’t think we should be here, wankers”, “I Can I Will” an old favourite, with a massive wall of death. Nice. Carpathia: 7/10 The 1st thing I noticed with this band s I walked into the room was a really nice walking bass line! A real cool old school metal sound, crunchy guitars and real nice drumming. The band finish their 1st

song “I’m sorry everyone but I’m going to pull an Axl Rose and go throw up in the toilet, please enjoy this instrumental set” as he runs off stage, everyone is pretty confused including the band but they crack on and start the next song, he joins them near the end with second guitar and vocals. The bass and guitars really work well together making some dirty sounding harmonies. It’s really nice to see a decent old school black metal band at Leo’s. Internal Conflict: 9/10 3rd to last band of the evening, the place is packed and there are still people turning up, here is Internal Conflict. OH MY FUCK! I haven’t seen a Metal band like this in so long! Hardcore to the bone, Beat downs to blow your fucking brains out. I don’t think there has been a band like this at Leo’s in a long while, these guys should be playing big shows with the likes of Bring Me The Horizon. “Lets have a fucking party. Its Saturday night”. These guys are warming the crowd up, everyone is loving it! “Lets split this down the middle, all the way to the back”. What a pit, the lion hasn’t shook like this in years. The whole band is jumping up and down and so is the crowd, so much energy in this room. Internal Conflict are a band not to be missed. Real Hardcore. Fucking hell. Vendetta: 7/10 Its nice to hear a band that have a different take on metal today, Vendetta have a mixed musical sound and remind me of a cross between Hatebreed and Rage Against The Machine. The penultimate band of the evening sure are warming the crowd up for Denounce’s performance. The room must be full by now but people just keep flooding into the venue. A real fast pace Metal band like Vendetta is

they have added a lovely covers section, playing intros to well know songs by the likes of Nirvana, Green Day, Lost Prophets and the Darkness to name a few, but adding their own Death Metal ending, it was funny as fuck! An hour into their set and Denounce are still pounding them out. Most drummers would be shattered by now, but Dave is still beating those skins with force. Gregs voice should be ruined by now but he powers on as if he’s only just started. “Thank you very much for the last 7 years”. The band put their instruments down and huddle together. The crowd are begging for more, chanting “DENOUNCE DENOUNCE DENOUNCE”, will the 5 piece give them what they want? Of cores they fucking will. Greg sits on the floor with his thumb in the air as the rest of the band get there instruments again. “Lets do this one more time”. The crowd is going fucking mental. If you were at this gig then you will understand why the band have got a 10/10 rating, and if you weren’t here then you have missed out on something spectacular. Denounce were on top of their game and really showed what they were made of. “This is our last song. . . ever. I hope you all had as much fun as us, so lets get fucked and have a laugh”. They play their last song and no matter how much the crowd beg for more the guys aren’t having any of it. An end of something big, their outro plays over the monitors as people leave the venue. I think today has been amazing and emotional for some people. It’s a sad day when a band like Denounce break up, but if they think it’s the right time then so be it. A big thank you to Denounce from everyone involved in this music scene, without them we wouldn’t have half the bands we have in this area. Well done for 7 amazing years. I met up with the guys from Dethrone Exodus on a frosty night in November in a back alley in Maidstone behind the Argos. It’s where they meet to practice sometimes. I planned on catching them before hand, but for various reasons most of the members turn up late, and drummer Matt Mead is rather antsy the whole time, and obviously would rather be playing... Fake smiles all round!

Where you guys from? BEN [speaks with mouth full] I’m from the Isle of Sheppey. [Laughter] but I was born in Chatham [more laughter] Nathan I’m from Bearstead, which is near Maidstone NICK I’m from Upchurch (between Rainham and Lower Halstow) MATT its pretty shit either way LIAM I’m from Gillingham, but I live everywhere, Twiddle at the moment. MATT I’m from Shittingbourne Were any of you previously in other bands? [All Laugh] NICK don’t even go there BEN yeh I was, I was in a couple of bands, I was in a band with Matt previously, MATT [sings] I’m no Casanovaaaa BEN yeh, I’m no Casanova. Yeh it was shit. Erm. NATHAN I was in a Goth band called Kildren from Maidstone, it was a learning curve... we were crap, but I learnt s... NICK [interrupting]...Here we go, here he goes! Well here’s my one Me and Matt were in

our first band together well it was my first band, it was with matt, then that went tits up, as I realised Matt was a prick, then we decided to get along a couple of years after that. But yeh, we never gigged but I was in another band called ‘Shattered Boundaries’ yeh we were so good yeh [laughter] yeh then before I joined Dethrone Exodus I was in a band called Pantera and I faked my own death [laughter] then I regenerated 40 years younger and changed my name from Daryl to Nick NATHAN Dimebag Johns! [Laughter] MATT You still can’t play Guitar LIAM I was the vocalist in a local

band called Pandora, which was one of the most successful out of all the bands any of us has previously been in. [laughter] NICK just for the record, I’d like to say Liam Barker is a Cunt. So what happened with Pandora – They have a comeback show in December [link] does that mean they split up? LIAM they DIDNT split up, MATT it was a hiatus LIAM well it’s been ages since me and the guitarist left Have you gone back to Pandora as well? LIAM no no, no that was over a year ago, they have a new vocalist and a new guitarist. I realised I wanted to carry on doing it again [singing] so

when I heard these guys were looking for a new vocalist... BEN can I just say I used to be in a really good band called thrown from the fourth floor ALL Ohh yeh yeh hahaha MATT Brie Brie Brie Squeak Squeak Squeak. BEN I got kicked out for being ILL NATHAN actually that’s how I got in this band, he [Ben] was ill and so was he, and I just met the old vocalist, the old old vocalist [Rich]and he asked me to cover for them and then he asked me to join, NICK Cos Ben was the old Guitarist, I was in Shattered Boundaries, and this was just to help Matt out and I was trying to leave, so I got Nathan in so I could fucking leave the band, but then my other (shitter) band broke up, so I had to stay with these bastards. So who is from the original band? MATT it must be just me and Ben When and how did the original members start the band? NICK it was last April wasn’t it? BEN I don’t have a fucking clue! MATT I think! When me and

wouldn’t let us change it NICK the thing with ‘Dethrone Exodus’ is that it sounded cool yeh, I worked it out yeh, and ‘Exodus’ a passage in the bible relates to Moses freeing the Jews from the Pharaoh, parting of the red sea and all that. Right, so our band name kind of sounds a tiny bit antiSemitic, so it’s not too good. N AT H A N what ’s anti-

Semitic? NICK anti-Jews NATHAN Oh! God! No! I didn’t realise that! [Laughs] NICK we’re not Nazi’s. So... you just thought it sounded cool? NATHAN yeh it sounded cool. LIAM at the end of the day I’ve never heard of any other band name remotely like it. NATHAN yeh it does... it does stick out. NICK ohh, well I have! There’s ‘Dethrone’, and there’s another band called ‘Exodus’? LIAM but are they in the same sentence? Are they? NATHAN yeh but they’re Death Metal.

LIAM we ARE NOT Death Metal, we are Metal Metal NATHAN I guess we’re Metal Core? NICK I’d just call us Metal, I don’t like it how people break it up into a million and one subgenres NATHAN we’re just standard Metal. Metal Metal LIAM Metal with a lot of influences Who are your influences? BEN believe it or not, but the thing that got me into music w a s Jimmy

Hendrix, but for the band, I dunno really, ‘Open The Skies’ , ‘The Casino Rule’, ‘Deaf Havana’ NATHAN to start writing music it was probably ‘Green Day’, but when I write music now, it’s mainly ‘A Day To Remember’, and ‘Black Dahlia Murder’, AND EMMURE NICK I don’t know about a band, but I re m e m b e r o n e particular song that made me want to write music and that was ‘Linkin Parks’ – ‘Faint’. NATHAN that’s a

good song, that’s a tune. NICK it’s just that chorus, that made me want to play guitar but, Lamb of God, Metallica, Trivium are obviously a big influence with me, Park Way Drive, er Slipknot NATHAN Actually you and me are quite similar guitarists? NICK [Ignoring Nathan] if there was any bands I’d want to meet it’d probably be ‘Suicide S i l e n c e ’, or ‘Black Dahlia

Murder’, LIAM I originally started playing drums so Travis Barker was such an influence, so that’s what I first started listening to. It’s hard to say, but for like vocals, I guess it was ‘Park Way Drive’. It’s like theenergy

they’ve got when they play an everything, it’s like they’re the one main band that, for years and years, they obviously get better every time.

Jamie our old vocalist started out it was I think it must have been early January NATHAN yeh when I joined it was April NICK no I joined in April NATHAN what last year? NICK yeh, oh I don’t fucking know it’s all a blur MATT WE DONT KNOW! ALL [laugh] So how’d you come up with the name? NICK That was Jamie wannit? NATHAN Yeh that was me and Jamie, me and Jamie were on MSN chatting, we come up with a couple of names, that all had ‘Dethrone’ in, words before and after ‘Dethrone’, we kept changing it and we finally got to ‘Exodus’. MATT but we can’t forget our old name ‘Thrown from the fourth floor’ but our vo ca l i st

“We’re no t Nazi’s” MATT for me it started with’ Green Day’ NATHAN then the ‘Spice Girls’ ALL [Laugh] MATT obviously, then I got into ‘Avenged Sevenfold’, now I realise how shit they all are, well I still really like them, but I don’t really listen to them anymore, NICK it’s not that they’re shit, the Drummers shit hot, he’s a fucking amazing Drummer, MATT yeh the Drummers the only good bit

photos courtesy of Dethrone Exodus

But he’s dead right? ALL... Yeh... MATT But now my inspiration is Leecher from ‘As Blood Runs Black’ and Matt mumble Groening? from mumble mumble mumble red. Mumble Texas in July.. Who’s your favourite local band? NICK here we go! BEN er... NICK it’s got to be local to us Ben, it can’t be like Scottish. BEN er...

LIAM well, for me, this is not Arse Licking at all, but it was actually Tide of Virtue, NICK They’re Essex! LIAM it’s borderline! Fuck you! It’s just a river, who gives a shit! MATT no, actually Elliot is from Dartford way. LIAM ah, points for Liam. They’ve like, only because they’ve like worked so hard, they started from the bottom, and like really, become like successful, and they’re really

really good to watch, it’s such an experience as well. [ALL agree] My favourite local band is probable Kismet,’ Seven Year Kismet’, obviously Matt knows them better than me, he went to their first ever show, I remember when I was in my old band, seeing them and thinking, ‘I wanna play music like that’ ‘ I wanna be like them’ NATHAN for me it will probably be; I know I’ve mentioned them

a lot tonight, but it’s got to be Callous, purely because I saw them at a battle of the bands at Invicta School or it might have been MGGS (Maidstone Grammar School for Girls) and er, they just blew everyone away and I remember seeing them and thinking “this is like the catchiest local band I’ve ever seen” and it did influence me quite a lot actually. Made me realise I’d quite like to be in a local band. MATT Kismet, like they said, I saw them play early on, I think I was 15, NATHAN so they’ve been round got like over 5 years, and we’ve been around for just over a year, MATT yeh but they have worked, so, so hard. Top guys as well. Similarly – they’ve also gone through quite a few members? MATT yeh, but their sound hasn’t really changed all that much? Well from the first time that they recorded? NICK Seven Year Shannon, it should be called that. MATT also tides of Virtue, and Pandora, hate to be an arse licker again, but...yeh... What happened to Luke and Jamie? NATHAN Can I just say?! EVERYONE ELSE NO! No! No! You can’t just say! NICK To do this you need someone neutral like me. ALL [Burst out laughing uncontrollably] NICK Basically, with Luke went on holiday with Nathan and Jamie, and some frictions were caused there. Obviously there was a lot going on at the time, and we just decided to part our ways. With Jamie, that was one of the biggest shocks, we were playing one night, and Jamie kind of just decided after one gig that he wasn’t enjoying it anymore that he was getting sick, he kept fucking up his throat, he just said he wasn’t enjoying being in it anymore, it was probably one of the biggest hits for me, cos I joined the band FOR Jamie. Me and Jamie have always been musically involved;

doing it correctly, they MATT Danny is underrated! NICK Danny, even though he’s quiet, he’s one of the fucking funniest guys, he’s really intelligent. Adam, Adams a fucking Wanker, Chainy, kind of disgusts me sometimes, Because he spits dribbles, pulls his pants down, sticks glow sticks up is arse, and gets children to lick them. [I’d like to state for the record he did that as a dare and won a T-Shirt]

m “Danny [fro AT+N] is d!” under rate

I think he wanted to go heavier as well. Musical differences as well. Are they doing anything now? NICK We ‘aint got a clue. I know Luke’s not doing anything at the moment NATHAN I know Jamie’s tried out for a couple of bands, [They burst into argument about certain people putting their feet in their mouths by saying things Wasted! Doesn’t want to get involved in...] NICK...we might as well bring up Spawn of Psychosis while we’re at it. Aaanyway how did you go about getting your replacements? BEN basically, when they come to get me, I got a phone call from Nick saying like ‘is it alright to come round your house? – want to talk to you about some stuff’ and when he turned up and all of them got out of the car...apart from Luke, [all laugh] I kind of realised, as I got kicked out of the band before FOR BEING SICK for being ILL. At first I was just temping, NICK Liam had to go through the rigorous method of going through the thousands upon thousands of applicants (4) LIAM I didn’t actually know Jamie was leaving until I saw something on FB then I checked my inbox to find the same message from him and him *points* it had the

same header and everything, practically the same message, asking me to come along to the ‘auditions’, and I kind of won by default. Liam are you worried about filling Jamie’s Shoes? No. It’s not the case that I need to make a good impression, it’s kind of like, I’ve been there and done it. It’s more like just stepping back in to the game really. So no, it’s not like I have to fill anyone’s shoes or anything, yeh he was a really good vocalist and everything but yeh, I’m just replacing him really. Anyone else plan on leaving? NICK no. Well, me probably, no I’m joking. What are your plans for the Future? ALL TOUR! NICK Touring, I’m gonna take a gap year and we plan on going on tour next year, Liam’s helping us out there, as he lived... quite a nomadic life for a while, he has quite a few contacts, MATT i.e. he used to be a tramp Best gig memory? MATT Doomfest in Folkestone NICK yeh, cos I played in sandals NICK no! No! The Wall of death at Swanley YOG that was fucking amazing. NATHAN my favourite gig was probably our first ever gig

at YOG 7/11/10 in Maidstone, because we’d done recording a weeks prior posted it all over the internet and EVERYONE sung along NICK oh yeh! And we sold out! And we sold out Jamie’s last ever gig at a YOG too. MATT one that sticks out for me was when we played at the Wyvern (Sittingbourne) and everyone got on stage and was singing along. BEN what was the question? NICK Bleed from within gig at Ivy; we were wankered Ben agrees, if we’re wankered, its fun! MATT not for the rest of us... NATHAN yeh or for the fans and the people watching us. QUESTIONS FROM OUR READERS Whose idea was it to create this kind of synergy between homosexuality and metal? Ian from Ramsgate NICK that was me and Matt were the metal and Nathan was the homosexuality ALL laughs, NATHAN I have a girlfriend actually NATHAN (I’m not gay by the way) Do you think you’ll ever be as good as Avenge Thee and Naime? Chainy from Margate ALL [laugh] NATHAN never, I’m not going to lie, I love every member of that band, and you know what they’re

What will you do once this style of music has gone out of fashion? Kat from Ashford NICK We’ll go home. We’ll go wank or something LIAM you have to evolve with the times, MATT I think I’d just start a Jazz band, BEN I’ll just go get a job. NATHAN I think the aim is just to play music you enjoy playing, which is how we came up with our first two songs, we’re always trying to experiment, but trying to please at the same Would you guys ever play a gig without bringing your same group of friends? Sam from Medway NATHAN We don’t bring people, they follow us. LIAM Maybe when we get gigs outside of Kent... that’s why we’re trying to get a tour together. Keep an ear out, they’re in the recording studio as you read this. Join them online Facebook [link] Myspace [link] W!

As YumYum took the stage infront of 200 screaming youths, my first impression was of looking in on an acid induced 70’s throwback band. Imagine my surprise when they dropped straight into their first track, bringing to life a huge mosh pit as they piled their way through their collection of Hardcore tracks. The vocals have a real Hatebreed feel to them, as the vocalist takes charge of the chaos and orders the crowd around, showing real stage presence with the people hanging off his every word. The muted guitar riffs are a bick tricky to pick out in the mix, but the solid drums and tight bass work show this band are talented, and the beatdowns really lock together well to give the impression that this band know their stuff. (6) They leave the stage with the crowd baying for more and soon enough, up step A Crash Course In Collision, who spring to life with their own brand of melodic post hardcore, and despite how out of place they feel on the bill, you can’t help but feel yourself nodding away with the catchy hooks and chorus’s. The announcement onstage that this is their last ever show encourages the crowd to get on side as these boys really take the show into their own territory. The crowd join in with little prompting from the front man as he encourages them to start clapping along. They have a very polished feel to their sound that almost seems beyond the age of their members, showing real professionalism despite being the softest band on the bill. It’s clear that real thought and talent has gone into their song writing, which is rewarded by the level of crowd response they receive. They get better and better as the set goes on and you find yourself not wanting it to end as they swap instruments, bring on guest vocalists and bust out everything they have on their last hurrah. I’m glad to say I saw them play before they split. (8) Near Ruin kick in to a nearly empty room, which quickly fills up as their flawlessly tight songs fill the air. One guitarist switches to Keys in parts, giving this band a real sense of uniqueness. The vocalist screams powerfully and consistently through the whole set, as fresh at the end as when they started, and he hits every note of the clean sections with startling precision. Add to this the drummers impressive solidarity and creative playing and you have a very promising young group of musicians. Combining thrashy riffs, catchy chorus’s, atmospheric keys, brutally accurate

drumming and stomah churning bass lines, Near Ruin have developed their own sound. Closing the set with a song titled The Masterpiece, they extend the intro to set up a pretty worrying looking wall of death, as they push the crowd fully back, wall to wall, and as the track drops into its fast paced first section the pit that erupts nearly brings the building down around them. If they continue to play like this, it won’t be long before they are a very big name throughout Kent, if not the whole of the UK. (8.5) Avenge Thee + Naime take to favouring the floor rather than the stage as usual and begin to liquify the crowd with their well practiced, punchy and unique brand of sludgey punk metal that has yet to be given genre. They pound their way through their set, at one point bringing the entire crowd to a seated position on the floor with them as front man Adam Wesgate really shows his talent by engaging the crowd like a pro. As fantastically talented as they are outrageous, they have the crowd eating out the palms of their hands as they deliver a massive musical bitchslap to Swanley, finishing the set with a fantastic four sided wall of death. In keeping with their “Against the norm” mentality I did away with the normal scoring system to give them a review score of Pi. Trust me, that’s a good thing. They really stole the show tonight. (3.1413) The evening pushes on toward the headliners, and having heard some of their tracks before I was very much looking forward to hearing Despite My Deepest Fear. They opened straight into a beatdown filled audible barrage of insanity, the floor opening up for some crazy hardcore dancing. These guys need to be on a bigger stage in front of a lot more people, as they certainly know how to entertain them. The vocalist stalked the stage like it was where he was born to be, his voice consistent and brutal throughout the set, hitting soaring highs and disgusting lows, with the guitarist providing clean vocals for the odd melodic chorus. Throwing a nice little jazzy intro into one song to keep the crowd guessing, they powered through the rest of their set. Unfortunately the sound for them wasn’t as good as it could have been and this took away a lot from the show they are capable of playing. They were not at their best tonight, but this didn’t seem to bother the crowd, who all seemed to go home satisfied. I’m looking forward to seeing them again on a bigger stage. Veganism is becoming a more and more popular lifestyle decision these days. The pessimist in me says it’s just a fad linked with the scene and straighedgedness, but it seems with programmes on terrestrial channels like ‘Kill it, Cook it, Eat it’ - showing the live slaughtering of animals - and the ready availability of propaganda documentaries such as ‘Earthlings’ through torrenting, young people are becoming more aware of the horrors committed against our fellow ‘earthlings’. More and more young people are deciding to become Vegetarian, Vegan or Raw Vegan.

Are you not worried about the transience/fickleness

‘More than vegan’ is a new community site that aims to review products so animal aware consumers can have a better insight to what products to buy. I caught up with entrepreneurs and couple Aaron Tilley and Amy Barrett and had a chat about what the future holds for them. For those who are not aware, in your own words,

No definitely not, of course a lot of people will come and go as far as Veganism, but I think that people who are devoted to it are the people we are targeting. I don’t think that it should be viewed as a fad, because of the cruelty behind the meat and dairy industries, makes it very raw and a lot of people are passionate about the issues surrounding it. The word ‘fad’ taints it as a lifestyle, it isn’t just people who care about the scene that choose to be vegan, people of all ages have switched to veganism because of what they have read and because they are concerned about the treatment of animals and their health.

Wasted! Magazine will in the near future be showing some exclusive reviews of some of their vegan products, so keep an eye out, if you can’t wait that long, don’t forget to follow ‘More Than Vegan’ on twitter and facebook for those all important updates. W!

What’s actually happening in the world at the moment? For people like you and Me all we can do is read the popular newspapers and listen to what they tell us. Thing is, these newspapers show whatever image of the world they want to show and it’s in their own interests to show us what benefits them as a money making corporation. News at times is verging on propaganda for this or that political party. What is a political party? We’re given this illusion of choice, the idea that if we vote for one, we can make a difference and bring about change. And so, we vote and continue to complain that the same thing is happening all over again. An absurd thing is that politicians quite outwardly lie or make promises that they can’t keep, brainwashing people with “clever rhetoric” (Obama: “Yes we can”) which means absolutely nothing and has no real substance what so ever. The concerning thing is that people relate to these simple minded sayings and are not interested in such tedious matters such as “fact“. I recently watched a rap video on Youtube that I surprisingly liked. The artist was called “Dead Prez” and the song was called “Hell yeah”. The video was quite shocking, and I think a lot of people might take it the wrong way and just see the same old clichéd rappers boasting about guns and violence. What I actually saw was a group of anarchists lashing out at their unfair oppressors. The opening of the video shows a well off white, probably middle class American family and they’re typically a bit overweight. The chubby sons asking for burgers and they’re walking around a safe environment with a cinematic equilibrium. Then they’re driving and they get lost in a typical American ghetto. Completely out of nowhere all these young black men smash through their car window and steal the car. The rapping starts and it’s no musical breakthrough but if you listen carefully throughout you’ll find some clever lines, certainly better than a politicians. The video goes on to show the situation all these men are in. Loads of them all live in the

same bare and grubby apartment, they have no light, no food and alas they resort to other means, mainly stealing, or getting welfare (which the rapper cleverly renames reparations) to stay alive. One can say “These people are wrong for stealing and being violent”. In the same way people say that Somalian pirates are wrong for the terrible things that they do, and regardless of how true this may be, the question people fail to ask is why these people do it. I’m sure a Somalian pirate has a family to feed too… for they are “humans”. Something mentioned in the song was “Modern day slave conditions” which is reminiscent of Libertarian Socialist ideas, which oppose the coercive social relations of capitalism such as wage labour. “Adherents of libertarian socialism assert that a society based on freedom and equality can be achieved through abolishing authoritarian institutions which control certain means of production and subordinate the majority to an owning class or political and economic elite”. Things start to look a bit different when you look at it in this way. It is obvious why crime is higher in poorer areas and it also serves a purpose so that authority can seem to have a legitimate role… which quite frankly, most of the time, it don’t. A government should be serving the people and not a ruling class. Police should be justly protecting, not controlling. It would be naïve of Me to say that the rich and elite of this world are the only bad guys, but I think what is obvious here is that those of us who are wealthy tend to be greedy and content, and we should take just as much of the blame for all the bad things happening in the world. Those of us who are just about getting by don’t like to complain because we know we could have it worse, but also like this little fairytale idea that we might be able to achieve wealth and fame ourselves, and some of us do. The people at the bottom of the pile are vital in order to keep the system chugging along. After all, how could a few lucky people get unfairly and absurdly rich in the world without a whole bunch of people getting unfairly poor? George Orwell said that “In the long run, hierarchical society was only possible on a basis of poverty and ignorance“. This is the reason for crime and violence, (and no doubt it’s important for the ruling class that it does exist as an excuse for more control). How much more control do they want? Our coalition government have hypocritically formed the “Interception Modernisation Programme” which enables them access to every single text and email message sent or received, every phone call made in the UK and every webpage that is visited, a violation of human rights laws, especially privacy laws. This all sounds a bit too totalitarian for comfort. It may seem subtle but it’s a very real threat, far more existent in fact than the supposed threat from external “terrors“. And it’s our ignorance that will allow it to flourish. It is our ignorance; the reason for war and poverty and other terrible human rights violations. We are the reason, and it’s about time we changed. Papi
