What’s happening? North American cities are finally building cycling into their transportation infrastructure. Around the world kids are doing 360s before they hit double digits. And mountain bike technology is breaking new ground faster than you can say, “hot burning magma.” At Kona, we’re all about the freedom and empowerment of the bicycle. We have been since 1988. We still have the same founding owners. We’re still populated by a staff of keen, active, impassioned cyclists. We’re not big, nor are we that small. Just a dedicated group of cyclists making bicycles for people who love bikes—no matter if that love is new or long established. It’s why we have 67 different models this year—bicycles that cover the twowheeled spectrum. Over the years, we’ve focused on evolving our bikes from better to best, obsessed with making every major and minor improvement possible. For 2011, there’s revolution to build on this evolution. We’ve added new and fresh ideas by investing more in people and technology than ever before. It’s part of the process of completely re-inventing what Kona stands for. The results are our first carbon bikes, designed and built from the ground up. A completely new Freeride machine and more Magic Link platform technology. Capped by a newly minted range of state-of-the-art electric assist bikes to complete our rapidly growing and multicultural fleet of commuter machines. A new era in cycling is emerging in our little bike company that could. At our core, we want bicycles to do more. Inspiring people to explore the natural world. Allowing them to experience self-propelled velocity, from women who must travel 10 miles a day to fetch water, to those trying to forego car culture altogether. We want them to promote healthy lifestyles, whether you are five, or 85. Most of all, we want the bicycle to bring people big, unabated, totally ridiculous fun. How do I register the warranty? Each and every Kona bike comes with an owner’s manual in the small parts kit. Located on the inside cover of the manual is a warranty card. Who owns Kona and where do you make your bikes? Kona is 50% US and 50% Canadian owned. It is an independent company; no one owns us and we don’t own anything else. We design all of our bikes from the ground up and visit the factories that make our frames and components and assemble our bikes in Taiwan every month while they are being produced. Bikes these days are a virtual United Nations (we have parts on our bikes made in Canada, China, France, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, USA) so it is almost impossible to get even half the parts on a bike from one country now. It is great to support your home country but the most important thing for Kona is to make the best bikes we can because our bikes are ridden by serious riders all around the world who expect nothing short of perfection.

THE KONA TIMELINE 1988

1992

• Kona is founded by Dan Gerhard and Jacob Heilbron, with offices opening in Blaine, Washington and Vancouver, BC. First bicycles are introduced as Cascade, but changed later in the year to Kona. Joe Murray is the first bike designer/product manager. .

• The Future Shock fork is introduced, a leading-link design by Joe Murray. In a very amicable agreement with Specialized, the name is changed to Z-Link. The fork is a total flop, is never safe to ride, and all stock is dumped into the Straight of San Juan de Fuca.

• First race team consists of Joe Murray and Dave Turner. Joe is inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame.

• Kona presents Max Jones race clinics at NORBA and World Cup events. More than 200 dealer and 2-day mini-clinics are held, with over 5,000 riders learning from Max’s expertise as a racer and from his “Tricks of the Trade” booklet.

• Distributors in England, France & Sweden bring Kona to Europe. • Kona introduces the first set of front/rear MTB tires: Maximum/Reaction designed by Joe Murray. Other MTB tire sets introduced include Break/Enter, Equilibrium/Propulsion and Lumpy/Gravy. • Grassroots racing program introduced in October. More than 3,000 riders have raced for Kona since the inception of the program.

1989 • Project Two, the first straight leg MTB production fork is introduced. Throughout the Kona range today, there are more than 10 versions of this fork produced for 26”, 29” and 700c wheel mountain and asphalt bikes. • Ex-roadie Bruce Spicer (now Brodie) races on the Kona Factory MTB team.

1990 • Doug Lafavor, “Dr. Dew” joins Kona in July 1990. • Kona line is expanded to 8 models at Interbike Anaheim 1990, first Hawaiian names are introduced. • Sandvik Special Metals begins production of the Kona Hei Hei in July. 4,000 Kona titanium frames are produced during the next 10 years. • Kona Hot, the 2nd US-made XC hardtail begins production in August 1990. • Max Jones of Carson City, Nevada joins the Kona Factory Team in March 1990. He is inducted into the MTB Hall of Fame in 1995.

1991 • World Champion DH rider Cindy Devine joins the Kona Factory Team. She takes the Bronze medal at the World Championships in September 1991 and a World Cup DH victory at Mount Snow, VT in June 1992. She is inducted into the MTB Hall of Fame in 2003.

• Haole, the first Kona road bike, features a titanium frame made by Sandvik.

1993 • Kona Hahanna and Fire Mountain are the first Kona Asphalt models, designated as, “Mountain Cross” hybrid bicycles with 26 x 1.50 slick tires. • Kona Kilauea wins 1993 “Bike of the Year” from Mountain Biking magazine. • AA and Kula are introduced in September, the first aluminum (Easton tubing) bicycles produced by Kona. A total of 20 models are presented at Interbike Anaheim.

1994 • Sex One and Sex Too are introduced in September, the first Kona dual-suspension bicycles. • Humuhumu-Nukunuku-Apu’A wins out as the name for the Kona singlespeed cruiser over Unit. It’s the longest name used for a bicycle model and the first named after a state fish. • The great Steve Peat races DH in the UK on a Kona Hei Hei Ti frame. Future NORBA champion Kirk Molday races XC in Canada on the same bike.

1995 • Kona introduces the Buck-A-Bike program on February 14. A total of $80,000 is raised between 1995–1998 by the program which supported cycling advocacy organizations like IMBA, Rails to Trails and NORBA. • Made by Altitude Cycles, Ku is the first aluminum mountain bike frame produced by Kona in the USA. Altitude produced over 3,000 high-end steel and aluminum bicycle frames for Kona, their first US customer. • Kona Design Group creates first original dual suspension design—a unified, linear-rate design named Sex (for suspension experience) One, Too and Three.

THE KONA TIMELINE • A two acre parcel is purchased and a 15,000 square foot office/warehouse is built in Ferndale, Washington, expanded to 30,000 square feet in 1998. • Kona Europe is founded with headquarters in the Black Forest region of Germany by Jimbo Holmstrom. After moving to Monaco and finally Geneva, it’s now the largest division of Kona.

1996 • Dave Wiens, 1993 US National champion, joins the Kona Factory Team. Inducted into the MTB Hall of Fame in 2000. • Kona Factory rider Tomi Misser wins two World Cup DH races, the European DH championship and finishes 3rd overall in the World Cup during 1996 on the Kona Misser DH bike with 5 inches of travel. Limited production Kona DH Misser replica bikes are produced. The Stab Production DH bike is introduced in July 1997. • Dario Cioni of the Italian Mapei-Kona MTB team takes 2nd in the St. Wendel, Germany World Cup and 2nd in the European championships. • Roland Green of Victoria, BC signs with the Factory Racing team and has an outstanding year: he wins the Canada Cup, Canadian MTB Championships, is 5th at the Norba Finals in Mammoth Lakes, and is 4th Espoir at the World Championships in Australia.

1997 • Jake the Snake cyclocross bike is introduced. Peter Wedge of the Kona Factory team wins Canadian CX championship, the first of seven. • Canadian Olympian Lesley Tomlinson joins the Kona Factory Team.

1998 • Mapei-Kona cross-country MTB team is formed. Team leaders are Dario Cioni and Roland Green. Dario finishes the season with an 8th place result in the World Championships. Roland is 3rd overall in the NORBA National series. Stefano Migliorini of Italy races the 7-inch travel Stab Dee-Lux on the World Cup DH circuit. After retirement, Stefano becomes “Mr. Kona Italy”. • The first production Freeride bike, Stinky Dee-Lux is introduced, a 5-inch front and rear wheel travel “Out-ofBounds” machine, based on the Stab design, with triple chainring.

• The first IMBA-Kona Funraiser is held at the Interbike show in Anaheim. In the 10 year lifespan of this event, the annual bowling event has raised over $100,000 for IMBA as well as $10,000 for the purchase of the “Vietnam” trail network by NEMBA. • Former BMX World Champion Scott Beaumont (UK) races a Kona Mokomoko to 3rd place in Japan Dual Slalom World Cup and finishes 4th overall in the 1998 World Cup standings. • Kona website (www.konaworld.com) is launched. • John Gibson of Canmore, Alberta is appointed Kona Lensman. He breaks open the North Shore freeride story in Bike magazine (May 1998).

1999 • Kona-Mapei team back for a 3rd year with Dario Cioni. Geoff Kabush of Victoria, BC replaces Roland Green who heads south for GT’s big bucks. Ryder Hesjedal of Victoria, BC is a 1st year Espoir for Kona. Andreas Hestler spends a year with Kona. Washington rider Dale Knapp wins Seattle Super-Cross national cyclocross event, finishing 3rd overall in the US National series. • Stab Dee-Lux is named “Downhill Bike of the Year” for 1999 by Mountain Bike Action. • Kona “Feel the Flow” demo tour is started. The new 29 foot RV with a 20-foot trailer full of Kona demo bikes tours 20 states and provinces around North America. During the next 10 years, over 40,000 riders have had an opportunity to take a free Kona test ride. • Chute “Out-of-Bounds” hardtail bike for dirt jumping/dual slalom is introduced. Mountain Biking magazine calls it “The Future of Mountain Biking”. • Kona Europe moves its’ headquarters from Germany to Monaco. • The Kona Clump Freeride team is formed, consisting of New World Disorder riders John Cowan, Wheely King Bobby Root and Graham Kuerbis.

2000 • Glow in the Dark. Need we say more? • John Cowan and Graham Kuerbis ride the Ford Focus promotion tour in California and Texas. They are doing 40 foot gaps over a Ford Focus but Ford asks for a Ring of Fire. • Kona Europe holds 1st Kona Festival in Elba, Italy for media, distributors and dealers. There is much riding, and grappa flows freely.

THE KONA TIMELINE • Two BMX models are produced: Kuku (means “jump” in Hawaiian) is a dirt jumper and Mama (means “race”) is, um, a race bike. Being cute does not sell in BMX. • Stab Primo DH bike with 8-inches of rear wheel travel is produced. Tracy Moseley joins the Kona Factory Team and goes on to win 10 World Cup races during her career with Kona. • The first Kona Scandium-tubed bikes are introduced on the Explosif MTB and Kapu and Haole road bikes. Geoff Kabush races the Scandium Explosif to 9th in the Sydney Olympics— top North American.

2001 • The Rasta color Stinky Dee-Lux epitomizes the new Kona. It has a co-starring role in a Walt Disney movie: Max Keeble’s Big Move. • Greg Minaar races DH in South Africa on a Kona Stab. • Kona Ring of Fire chainguide/double chainrings is the set-up for dirt jumpers. • We introduce the Hula, a 24-inch wheel aluminum kids’ mountain bike with shock fork, our first Kona kids’ production bike.

2002 • Bear and Bear Dee-Lux, 4-inches of front and rear wheel travel, 28 and 30 pounds, pioneering the All-Mountain MTB category. A trademark dispute changes the name to Dawg • Jake the Snake is inducted into the MTB Hall of Fame. • The Whistler Bike Park opens, featuring a fleet of 135 Kona Garbanzo special edition high-performance downhill machines. By the end of the season, each bike will have been ridden more than a million vertical feet without a single frame failure. • Kona’s Queen of ‘Cross Ann Knapp marries Dale and goes on to win 5 Supercross races before overcoming a back injury to take her and Kona’s first ever US National Championship in Napa, California. Young Kona ‘crosser Barry Wicks takes 2nd in the U-23 event.

2003 • Stinky fever continues to rage and the first production kids’ Freeride bike, the Stinky JR with 24-inch wheels and 4-inches of front and rear wheel travel is introduced for Kona Kids.

• Asphalt is re-introduced. Dr. Dew goes disc, Tiki and Tiki Deluxe complement our growing range. • A is the shortest model name in the bike biz, a dual suspension bike with more shocks than its singlespeed gear. • New components include the JackShit freeride pedal and grips, Cromoly Bulge ISIS crank, and the Ring of Fire Rockguard. • John Cowan released Higher Learning, a 30-minute howto Dirt Jump DVD produced by girlfriend and future wife, Stephanie Drinnan. • The Kona-Clarks Team of Champions is formed with Fabien Barel (French DH), Tracy Moseley (English DH), Geoff Kabush (Canadian MTB) and Peter Wedge (Canadian CX). • Dave Watson makes history in July by jumping over the Alp d’Huez stage in the 100th Tour de France. The event is immortalized by Scott Markewitz’s award winning photograph and in New World Disorder IV. Dave goes on to be named the Guardian (England) newspaper Sports Personality of the year. • Kona is named Industry Advocate of the Year by BRAIN, awarded to National Advocacy Director Mark Peterson by Bikes Belong Director Mike Greeham in recognition of many advocacy activities including Buck a Bike, Freeride Grants, Bear Bell Program, IMBA Bro Deals, Collegiate Scholarship and IMBA “Above and Beyond” supporter for 7 years.

2004 • Fabien Barel wins the World Championships in Les Gets, France on a bike that was re-designed and re-developed by the quadrumvirate of Fabien, team mechanic Paul Walton, product manager Paddy White and technical director Dr. Dew. • Asphalt continues to expand with the Smoke, an urban workhorse & the BikeHotRod, an out-of-the-box chopper machine. • Introduce the 24-inch wheel Stuff JR, the first kids’ production Dirt Jump bike. • A whole new category is introduced with the Hoss and Hoss Deluxe, inspired by Maurice Tierney of Dirt Rag magazine, the originator of the Clydesdale category. Bikes for the 200+ pound rider. • The Kona Factory Team adds Les Gets mountain bike resort as a title sponsor. Ryan Trebon and Barry Wicks combine to build the Twin Timbers. Ryan takes 2nd overall in the NORBA series and 5th in the US National XC. Ryan and Ann Knapp both take the US CX series championship, then Ann travels to Belgium to the World’s CX championship and finishes just out of the medals in 4th.

THE KONA TIMELINE • The first 5 winners of the Kona-IMBA Freeride grants are announced to clubs from Colorado, Florida, Oregon, Illinois, and British Columbia. The 7th annual Kona-IMBA Funraiser raises another $8,000 for the 2005 grants. • Kona Bike Park Leogang, Austria holds their first Out of Bounds/Kona Festival where John Cowan pulls off the world’s first backflip on his own Cowan signature DJ frame. Fabien Barel and Tracy Moseley win the Top to Bottom Eliminator DH.

2005 • The Kona Global 24 Hour series is launched, with Kona sponsored days of pain in the UK, Australia and Colorado. It continues to expand to Finland and Switzerland, and moves to the Arizona desert in 2007. • Fabien Barel struggles through the race season, finishing in the top three in most World Cup qualifiers, but crashes out and suffers mechanicals for most of the season. He becomes the first Frenchman since Nicolas Vouilloz to win back to back World Championships with a perfect ride at the World Championships in Livigno, Italy. The Stab Supreme is the #1 bike on the World Cup circuit once again. • Dan Gerhard & Dr. Dew are inducted into the MTB Hall of Fame.

2006 • “Yesterday my old pal Leonardo and me we had some beer together. Then he started telling me a strange story. A few years ago when he was out on the trails, he said he met a beautiful Italian girl in black clothes riding a Kona. When she passed him, she gave him a mysterious smile. He fell in love immediately.” Three women’s specific models are introduced: the Lisa HT, DS and RD.

• The Kona AfricaBike and Bicycling’s Biketown Africa heads to Gabarone and Bobonong, Botswana in November. The Africabike is specifically designed for the needs of the mostly female healthcare workers where HIV and AIDS patients are currently serviced by walking. Built around a sturdy steel step-through frame, featuring heavy-duty tires and tubes from Continental and singlespeed coaster brake hubs from Shimano, this pilot project is likely to become the most important bike we’ve ever made. 3,500 AfricaBikes have been sent since the beginning of the program. • Three new riders are added to the Clump by the end of the year: Grant “Chopper” Fielder from the UK, and the biggest new names from Spain, Andreu and Lluis Lacondeguy—who were already on Kona.

2007 • The Kona Groove Approved Bike Park program adds Verbier (Switzerland), Livigno (Italy), Levi (Finland) and Killington (Vermont). There are now 20 parks on 4 continents featuring custom-built Kona Garbanzo park bikes in their rental fleets. • A total of 79 models for 2007 are introduced, including a complete Cowan signature dirt jumper, high-end women’s specific Queen Kikapu MTB and Lisa RD Supreme road machines, as well as Kula 2-9 and Unit 2-9 MTB 29ers. • On the Asphalt side, the Dews are joined by the full suspension Dew FS, the Paddy Wagon—a singlespeed drop bar track bike, and the Major Jake, a CX race machine. • Brian Berthold of Brake Therapy and Kona conspire to bring D.O.P.E. to Kona fans everywhere with an anti-brake jack system for the Stinkys and Coilers.

• The Velo Bella Kona women’s team rides the new bikes, including Wendy Simms from Parksville, BC who goes on to win 3 Canadian CX championships for Kona.

• Fabien Barel caps an up and down year with a surprising silver medal at the DH Worlds in Fort William. Despite breaking his foot twice during the year, Fabien also wins the Canadian Open during Crankworx, films a strong segment for New World Disorder Nine, and celebrates 5 years with Kona with a signature edition Stab Supreme.

• Ryan Trebon wins the US National MTB XC race, with Barry in 2nd place. Barry wins the Short Track Nationals, Ryan takes 3rd.

• Ryan Trebon wins the US Short Track MTB Nats and nabs silver at the MTB Marathon, as well as the overall USGP series of CX.

• Czech rider Kamil Tartakovic joins the Factory Team, riding the 4X specific Howler, winning the Schladming World Cup and taking 3rd overall in the WC series.

• The annual All Star Revue is introduced, with features on Kona Factory and Clump riders, Groove Approved bike parks and World Cup racing.

THE KONA TIMELINE 2008 • Magic Link, a patented auxiliary shock dual suspension system designed by Brian Berthold is introduced on the 6+1inch travel CoilAir. • Paul Basagoitia’s SE bike is one of the hottest new Kona’s for 2008. This 4x4 dual suspension slopestyle competition bike has a surf/snow inspired paint job. Paul breaks his collarbone in June, but Andreu Lacondeguy goes on to win Crankworx on the Bass. That makes 3 out of 4 Crankworx wins for Kona. 2011 KONA BIKES Steel is Real We've never given up on the original mountain bike material. You'll find the simplicity, strength, comfort, resilience, and playfulness of steel sprinkled throughout our line of road, asphalt and mountain bikes. 7005 Aluminum Aluminum is currently the most widely used tubing material in the bicycle industry. Aluminum is often mixed with a number of other elements to create aluminum alloys featuring a host of different ride characteristics, while increasing mechanical properties. Much of our tubing is butted and/or formed, meaning that the wall thickness of the tubing can be increased or decreased, as well as shaped, allowing us to fine tune a particular frame’s ride characteristics depending on the application. Kona uses butted 7005 aluminum extensively throughout our entire range of mountain, asphalt and road bicycles. A tough, durable, affordable, light, and dependable alloy, 7005 delivers great performance that lasts for thousands of rides. It is, by far and away, the ultimate aluminum tubing on the market today. Kona Race Light 7005 Kona Race Light 7005 is a lighter, more performance oriented fabrication of our 7005 Aluminum tubing. Designed to Kona’s racing specifications, the biggest difference is custom butting. The tubing is thicker at weld areas and important parts of the frame, providing great strength and torsional integrity to the ride. We remove wall thickness in other parts of the frameset to lighten up the bike, providing the perfect balance between quickness and stiffness. The emphasis here is on performance rather than durability, for applications where speed is more important than longevity. Kona Race Light Scandium Known to be one of the lightest and strongest alloys in the world, with superior ride characteristics, Kona Race Light Scandium is featured in many of our high-end bike models — from dual suspension mountain bikes through to some of our top ranking asphalt bikes. Scandium is a potent grain refiner that when added to aluminum alloys, elevates

the strength and durability of the material by 50%. It accomplishes this by aligning the grains of the alloy, making the metal less susceptible to failure. Kona Race Light Scandium alloy is twice as strong as 6061 or 7005 aluminum, allowing our engineers to use much less material. Because of the material’s strength, it can be butted thin enough to give the aluminum a more compliant ride similar to steel but without weight. In more specific terms, we’re shaving weight from our aluminum frames by 10-to-15%, without sacrificing strength and durability. For 2011 you’ll find Kona Race Light Scandium sprinkled throughout our entire line of bikes. Most notably, our Abra Cadabra 100-160mm variable travel backcountry bike uses a Scandium frame, a testament to our commitment and faith in one of the world’s most rigorous materials. Kona Race Light Scandium Highlights: • Light as titanium • More durable than carbon • Half the weight of steel • Five times stronger than aluminum • Fast as light Kona Race Carbon Fiber Technology New for 2011, Kona introduces two new carbon fiber bicycles, the Kula Watt, a lightning quick hardtail cross-country mountain bike, and the Major Jake, our top-of-the-line cyclocross race bike. Both Kona designed bicycle frames are built at one of the most advanced bicycle manufacturing facilities in the world, Hodaka. In addition to producing cold-forged bicycle and frame components including wheels for Shimano and Easton, Hodaka employs a carbon fiber fabrication process that leads the industry. Combine Kona’s race proven geometries with one of the lightest, strongest and ride savvy materials on the planet, in a facility known for its innovation, leadership, and attention to detail, and you have some of the most beautifully riding bicycles on the planet. • The Technology: Kona Race Carbon Fiber bicycles use Prepreg technology – specially formulated resin matrix systems reinforced with man-made fibers such as carbon, glass and aramid. When cured, the Prepregs used in Kona frames represent an incredibly solid

structural material that is highly durable, temperature resistant, exceptionally stiff, and lightweight. These resin formulations and fiber impregnation technologies are designed in concert with Kona’s stringent product design requirements, allowing our bikes to achieve the ultimate balance between stiffness, lightweight, and ride quality. • The Material: To create an unprecedented level of toughness, stiffness and good anti-vibration properties, epoxy resins used in the Major Jake and the Kula Watt use a special Nanopowder technology. Nanopowder resin is designed to fill microscopic gaps (see them like “nano” holes between the carbon layers) between the carbon fibers themselves, making the frame more homogenous (the forces generated while riding the bike are running through a more compact structure), lighter, and more comfortable. The result of having limited internal gaps also drastically reduces potential breaking points, increasing the fatigue limit of Kona frames by more than 30% over standard carbon monocoque frames. • Molding Process: At the bottom bracket, head tube and seat area, Kona Race Carbon Fiber frames use special internal silicon shells which increase the compression of carbon fibers layered in the mould. The method prevents the internal formation of wrinkles, another potential breaking point that, when avoided, increases the fatigue resistance of the bike, while at the same time, resulting in a lighter frame. Sloping Top Tube Kona recognized the advantages of sloping top tube frame design right from the original models we made in 1988, designed by inaugural MTB Hall of Fame legend Joe Murray. As a company, we’ve stayed true to this philosophy, going so far as to pioneer the design in road bikes before the benefits were understood. Today, you’ll find sloping top tubes in most high-end road race bicycles. We’ve since stayed true to all the many positives this design brings to overall bike performance and comfort. First, this design allows the top tube to be lower, providing more room for correct positioning and free body movement, enabling more standover clearance, which

2011 KONA BIKES is particularly useful on dual suspension bikes that have higher bottom brackets. Riders have a more secure riding position, which is especially beneficial when riding downhill sections. Also, the top tube is longer and more compliant. As the top and down tube become more parallel, there’s less triangulation, resulting in more compliancy. So not only is the frame stronger and more responsive, but it absorbs more shock than frames with horizontal top tubes. Compact Rear Triangle Short chain stays and seat stays provide a perfect balance of stability and power transfer when out of the saddle and pedaling hard. Shorter seat stays also have less deflection during braking and accelerate quicker than longer stays. The shorter rear triangle also helps the bike to negotiate tight twisting sections of trail. Hydroformed Tubing For 2011, you’ll find formed tubing on a great number of our bicycles. Hydroforming uses water specifically, but we also use Superplastic formed tubing, shaped using air, or cold formed tubing. This not only allows a tube to be tuned for compliancy on specific planes but it also improves grain alignment and increases all mechanical properties. Hydroforming is a tube shaping technology that uses super high-pressure liquid to form the shape of a tube and align its grain structure. Quite simply, the technology delivers a sound structure and ride performance like no other tubing in the world. The process results in a seamless, continuous, aligned piece of metalright down to the fiber structure itself. Hydroforming proves especially advantageous at weld points where it can be flared to increase weld areas, adding strength without adding weight in the form of extra gussets. The result is a strong, flawless frame with great lateral stability, durability and responsiveness. Not to mention, it looks real sharp too. Superplastic Formed Tubing Superplastic Forming (SPF) uses high temperatures to shape tubes, when the tube structure is in its most ‘plastic’ and formable state. SPF allows for better tube

shapes that cannot be produced using traditional forming techniques. Whereas shape designs can be applied to 20% - 30% of the tube using hydroforming, SPF allows up to 90%. The result: more optimized shapes and lesser weight. SPF tubes are the perfect alternative to the infinitely more expensive carbon fiber – comparable in weight and performance, without the accompanying disadvantages. SPF tubes are also recyclable. SPF Tubing is featured on the following Kona 2011 models: Blast, Cinder Cone, Caldera, Kula Lisa, Dew FS, Dr. Dew, Dew Deluxe, and Dr. Good. Internal Headset By having the headset bearing located inside the headtube (what’s sometimes called zero stack), rather than the top and bottom, we are able to achieve a wide array of advantages when it comes to front end stiffness and overall riding performance. With an internal headset, the head tube is able to take the stress directly, resulting in less play and less wear, with strong ride characteristics, and better bearing performance. An internal headset also reduces stack height, enabling the height of the stem and bars to be more adjustable, the bike has more setup options, resulting in the best fit possible. Tapered Head Tube For 2011, a wide variety of Kona bicycles feature tapered head tubes, meaning the top of the head tube is 1-1/8-inches at the top, while the bottom is 1.5-inches. From our cyclocross bikes to our cross-country mountain bikes, right through to longer travel dual suspension models, like our Cadabras and CoilAirs, a tapered head tube provides more support at the intersection of the top tube and down tube. The design also offers a more solid interface between forks with tapered steer tubes and the bicycle frame itself. More girth at the bottom of the head tube better distributes shock force, prolonging the bearing life of the headset itself. The design also allows for a stronger steering position and improved balance, giving the rider more control in rough terrain.

Kona Magic Link Active Geometry With the ability to change geometry, travel and suspension on the fly, Kona’s patented Magic Link Active Geometry represents a new era in dual suspension mountain biking. Released in 2008, Magic Link is a completely intuitive system. It’s always on. You and the trail are the switch. • Climbing: Increased pedal pressure keeps the Magic Link’s auxiliary shock from engaging, retaining good pedaling geometry and firmer suspension characteristics. Everything you need for comfort, traction and efficient power transfer. • Cross-country: Tire drag, faster corners and bigger bumps cause the Magic Link’s auxiliary shock to move deeper into its travel. Chain stays elongate, the saddle and bottom bracket lower, and the head tube slackens, all amounting to an agile, confident riding position, with increased wheel traction and plusher travel. • Descents: When the main shock and the auxiliary shock fully engage, Magic Link allows the bike’s geometry to slacken considerably, enabling the rider to position themselves further behind the bike, with a lower center of gravity and extended rear triangle for increased stability. • Variable Spring Rate: Throughout all three modes, Magic Link’s two separate shocks work in series, providing a variable spring rate that is lower and more plush in descend mode. Working in series also allows the rear wheel to pop over big, sharp bumps with virtually no resistance. Because the main shock becomes more progressive as the link engages, it won’t blow through the travel and it won’t bottom out. • Extended Travel: Finally, Magic Link also has the ability to lengthen rear travel. In our Cadabra models, travel ranges from 100mm in climbing mode to 160mm when fully engaged. In our CoilAir series travel ranges from 125mm to 200mm. In our brand new 2+2 cross-country models, travel ranges from 50mm to 100mm. Kona Walking Beam 4-Bar Linkage System Since Kona first introduced the platform in 1996, we've been refining and honing the most functional, durable and

2011 KONA BIKES performance-oriented dual suspension platforms ever invented. That's why you see versions of our 4-Bar linkage on everything from the Hei Hei XC Race bike to our DH Stab Supreme. • Function and Durability: Anytime you have a pivot in anything, there is sideto-side movement, or tolerance. It's what allows the pivot to move freely. When you have pivots that are close together, like in more complicated multi-pivot designs, the side-to-side movement in those pivots becomes amplified, what's called tolerance stacking. Kona's 4-Bar system keeps pivots as far away from each other as possible, thus minimizing tolerance stacking. Ultimately, it equates a stiffer rear end, as well a significant decrease in bearing and bushing wear. Another benefit of our 4-Bar system is minimized side load on the rear shock. If you've got close pivot points and/or the shock positioned so that it is exposed to lateral forces, you've got side load on the shock. Side load causes resistance, which negatively impacts suspension performance. Side load also causes premature seal failures. With our 4-Bar system the rear shock is protected from side-to-side forces. As a result, we have a super low rate of shock problems, as well as a very responsive feel to the rear suspension. • Tunability: 4-Bar allows for a rainbow of different suspension characteristics, after all, this is the suspension platform used for F1 racecars. For XC bikes, we can take an inherently progressive air shock and make the suspension more linear, allowing the rider to benefit from all of the bike's travel. For downhill bikes, like our Operators, an inherently linear coil shock can be set-up to be more progressive for big hits. • Plush Factor: Void of gimmicks, with pivots, bearings and the shock itself well supported, Kona's Walking Beam 4-Bar Linkage System delivers that beautiful, super plush feel we all crave as mountain bikers. Whether it's taking the edge of a technical XC race course, the burl out of a backcountry all-day epic, or smoothing the brake bumps at your local bike park, our 4-Bar suspension designs deliver bomber plushness, ride in, ride out.

Asymmetrical Chain Stays When a rider puts force into the bicycles drivetrain (cranks, chain and rear cassette), not only are they propelling the bike forward, they’re also putting a significant amount of torsion on the rear chain stays. Because the drivetrain is on one side of the bicycle, the frame wants to flex laterally. It is the one element of bike design that’s not in perfect balance. Used primarily on our dual suspension mountain bikes, asymmetrical stays help to stiffen the rear end by compensating for the offset forces of this imbalance. The drive-side stay is straight, while the nondrive takes advantage of no chain rings and chain, better able to deal with the torque, effectively countering the torsional forces in the rear triangle. By putting strength where it is needed, pedaling stiffness and rider efficiency is greatly increased. Electric-Assist Using low profile, re-chargeable Samsung 18650 Lithium Ion batteries, Kona’s electric assist technology is based on 700C bicycle trekking types that use a 24-volt, 250W battery-assisted Pedelec motor. Using a patented Dutch design TMM torque sensor and a precise digital processor, the power assist from the front wheel drive motor can be delivered in proportion with the exact power output of the rider. The result is a very smooth, effortless ride. The system’s battery capacity is 24V with 10Ah (Amp Hour), (24V 13Ah for the Electric Ute) delivering a long lifecycle of more than 700 rides. In power mode, the system can assist riding for up to 30km. In normal mode, power assist lasts up to 57km, while in economy mode, the battery has a huge 100km range (all range tests were conducted using a 85kg/190lbs in a mild headwind condition). We’ve also incorporated a very sophisticated battery management system to detect cell performance and balance, with an incredibly accurate charge indicator. Because Kona is all about quality, our electric assist bikes are the first on the market to pass the stringent CEN 15194 standard for Pedelec bikes in Europe.

Kona Sizing and Fit Sizing and fit have always been one of the main strengths of the Kona range, with more stock sizes available than any other bike company. With our range of bicycles expanding significantly over the last couple of years, we felt it was time to overhaul our size scale. We started with the overwhelming request for longer top tubes on our XC mountain bikes. The average increase is ½-inch (15-20mm), which we coupled with shorter stems and slightly shorter headset stack heights. The steps between sizes were evened out to ½-inch or 1-inch increments, and there are still up to 7 sizes: from 14inch to 22-inch on many models. In the asphalt range, top tube lengths were marginally lengthened, with the size gaps revised to even 15 to 20mm steps. There are still up to 6 sizes” from 46cm to 61cm on most models. When it's called for, seat posts are either offset or straight to maximize the reach and power output of the rider. More importantly, the overall sizing on mountain bikes and road bikes allow Kona dealers and riders to determine their fit more easily from model to model and category to category. The net result is better fit on the entire range, with a simplified system that allows easy fine-tuning and a perfect marriage of bike and rider throughout our entire 2011 range. Lifetime Warranty Kona warrants to the original owner that the frame of this new Kona bicycle purchased from an authorized Kona dealer shall be free of defective materials or workmanship for the lifetime of ownership by the original owner. Carbon frames have a 5 year warranty. During this warranty period, Kona shall repair or replace, at its sole option, the bicycle frame if Kona determines the frame is defective and subject to this limited warranty. The original owner shall pay all labor and shipping charges connected with the repair or replacement of the bicycle frame. hen it comes to road bikes, our approach is more practical than most. As long time cyclists, we don’t want you sacrificing comfort for fashion. We also know that performance is crucial, but not to the extent that it makes riding a pain—literally. When we first started building road bikes in 1993, we were one of the first companies to use sloping top tubes, a unique carryover from our revolutionary mountain bike geometry that results in a compact rear triangle and more efficient power transfer—with more comfort to boot. Since we’re not a Tour team brand, we make our bikes for the black sheep road rider, choosing more comfortable aggressive geometries and materials, as opposed to uncomfortable aggressive. Using steel, Scandium and carbon fiber, with a host of different models depending on individual style, we make road easy, efficient and fast.
