CONTENTS Message from Gerald Hurley, Waterford Chamber

W

hen we began putting this issue of Network together, we never expected to be in this situation with COVID-19. Things changed so fast and now it must be about how we act and react. We took the decision to publish the magazine so we can continue to promote Waterford and our members to our ever-growing audience. This issue still focuses on two key measures which are vital for the future of Waterford – going ‘Greener’ and the changing landscape of retail. Of course we have tips and advice on how to get through these tough times, but the most important thing among these darker days is that we work together and support each other. The Waterford Green Deal is a perfect example of this where the public and private sectors are coming together, through Waterford Chamber, to make Waterford ‘greener’. We need to take environmental issues seriously and have it firmly on the agenda as we look for investors to consider Waterford. But more than this we need it for future generations and, with the incredible technology and talented resources we have on our doorstep, Waterford can certainly lead

the way in this regard. Speaking of bright minds, we also meet Shana Chu in this issue, who is styling the future of retail through artificial intelligence. There is no denying our people are our assets and right now people’s lives are paramount. We must comply emphatically with the advice being given by Government and health officials amid the COVID-19 crisis. It has forced many to close their doors but rest assured Waterford Chamber is here to support you. In the meantime, there are still some businesses open and we are encouraging everyone to support their local stores as best they can. The local economy is relying on you. We need to work together as one big team now, because if we do, we will get through this and be stronger than ever before. Gerald Hurley CEO, Waterford Chamber

Striking a Balance  By JONATHAN EARL, President, Waterford Chamber

R

ecent circumstances have forced me to rewrite this piece. The original theme was about change and while it is still a topic which predominates our lives the current crisis dictates a new interpretation of that theme. Current events have made me think back to how our lives changed in 2008 and how this compares to that awful time. The effects may be similar, but the source of the crisis is very different. In 2008 the financial crisis produced a climate of blame and anger. The Covid-19 crisis in some ways has brought out the best in us. Politically our leaders are focusing on our welfare and the health service has shown what it is capable of in such unprecedented times. The Chamber and Skillnet have responded positively and used their considerable resources wisely and productively to communicate vital information to their members and continue services as best as

06

possible while fielding queries on an unprecedented level. On a community level, while the advice is for isolation, it seems to have brought the community together and heightened awareness for the weakest and most vulnerable in our society. On a personal level everyone is struck by the consequences of our new reality, but on a business level some are hit harder than others and, in the weeks and months which follow the Chamber will do its utmost to help Waterford’s business sector. It is a relationship which is mutual and vital. Two things are certain though, at the time of writing this article we have not experienced the worst of the effects, but equally certain is that it will pass. Yes, it will leave its mark on society and business will take time to recover but there will be a bounce back and it will be quicker than 12 years ago. The advice we are giving clients

is that there are actions to be taken but there is also the bigger picture. In a year’s time you want to be proud of the way you reacted to this crisis. Be sympathetic and patient with customers and suppliers, hopefully they will still be there in 12 months’ time. Stay connected both personally and professionally, use your Council and your Chamber, or any organisation to which you are affiliated and make the most of that resource for guidance and assistance. The first article I wrote as President, and the first speech I made was about the balance between long-term requirements and short-term needs. That balance seems particularly relevant now. What do we need to get through this crisis and how do we ensure we recover quickly, as better people and a better City and County?

OVID-19 has had a significant impact on the business community in Waterford and with vast amounts of information surfacing, it has become a minefield for many business owners. However, Waterford Chamber has been consistent in keeping its members up to date and providing ongoing support for those feeling the pressure. According to Waterford Chamber CEO Gerald Hurley: “Our offices are closed but we are all working remotely and in regular contact with our members. We are also working closely with Chambers Ireland putting pressure on Government to increase supports for businesses, while also sending out official communications to members on the latest developments. We have also organised a number of webinars on HR and Finance-related topics and we have also launched a new stateof-the-art system which has significant benefits for members. “In response to COVID-19, we are opening a new platform for members to advertise and promote special offers they have may to the entire Chamber network during these difficult times. This service is offered free of charge until the end of this year. Members can create their own account, share their business information and promote themselves to our extensive network. “We will also be holding online networking forums, where members can log on to discuss a range of topics and help each other through this crisis. In their latest update on Friday afternoon, Revenue relaxed the rule regarding tax free

08

vouchers. While the overall limit remains at €500 per employee, the rule that restricted this scheme to one voucher per year has been relaxed if an employer wishes to issue a voucher to reward employees for exceptional effort during the COVID19 crisis. Welcoming the measure, Gerald said: “The Waterford Gift Voucher has always been a great way to reward staff, particularly at Christmas, but employees need a boost now more than ever. I would encourage any employer looking to do so, to contact me directly and we can arrange the delivery of Waterford Gift Vouchers. Not only can they be used right now in a number of supermarkets, but they will also significantly add to the local economy once businesses reopen and are a tax free way of rewarding those on the front line right now.” Concluding, Gerald said: “This crisis is one of the major challenges of our generation and our personal priorities have switched to protecting human health. Disruption is not something new. We normally deal with disruption by remaining calm and having the patience to know that there will be light at the end of the tunnel. We have to focus on finances, operations, employees and community. “We know that there is strength and unity in working together. This is the basis for a Chamber and the current crisis adds urgency and resolve to this unity. The Chamber leadership team are in regular contact to determine how best to support you as members and be assured we are here to help in any way we can.”

Health & Safety First  MARY DARLINGTON, Darlington Consulting offers advice for employers & managers during COVID-19 THOSE WORKING FROM HOME  Work from home yourself, if you can.  Show your appreciation for all their efforts.  Communicate with those at home and in the workplace regularly, be optimistic, remain calm, ask about their family and then about work priorities.  Ask them what they need – office equipment, better internet connection, medication, shopping etc. and provide that help.  Look for clues that some may have mental health difficulties, refer them for help with EAP, healthcare provider etc.  Consider going into the workplace once or twice a week if others you manage are there to show support, taking all the right precautions. WITHIN THE WORKPLACE ITSELF  Develop a plan so that those in work can remain six feet apart.  Stagger shifts to minimise numbers in the building at any one time.  Provide hand sanitiser at all entrances, exits etc.  Provide plenty of soap in washrooms.  Put up signs everywhere re: the need for frequent handwashing, sneezing and coughing into tissues or elbows.  Scale up the cleaning of the building – sanitise handrails, door handles, buttons that employees press to get in or out, swipe card machines etc. every two hours or more often.  Increase the emptying of bins, cleaning of common areas, replacement of roller towels, cleaning of lifts, lift buttons, handrails on staircases and barriers etc.  Sanitise shared photocopiers and other equipment.  Supply protective equipment to those that clean as they will be handling paper towels from

NETWORK • Q1 2020

washrooms and tissues employees have sneezed into etc.  Stagger breaks if you can, to limit the numbers using the canteen and/or toilets. FEEDING YOUR WORKFORCE Consider varying the food in the canteen, such as:  Increasing the amount and variety of fruit and fruit juice for everyone. If you can provide them free then do so to encourage uptake.  Reducing chips and greasy foods and replacing them with lighter, tasty, healthier foods. ENCOURAGE ALL EMPLOYEES TO:  Eat a well-balanced diet.  Go for a walk at lunchtime while still maintaining social distancing.  Drink plenty of fluids, especially water (provide more water sources).  Get more sleep.  Do something to reduce their stress.  Reward themselves. Provide some supportive literature in the canteen about healthy eating, giving up smoking, taking exercise etc. IF EMPLOYEES MUST WORK AT CLIENTS’ PREMISES  Drivers of company vehicles should be given sanitiser so they can clean the doors, steering wheel, gear stick, indicators etc. regularly.  If employees normally travel together in company vehicles, consider how they could travel separately in several vehicles to maintain social distancing.  They have the right to a safe and healthy workplace where they are visiting. They need to report back to your company if they feel hygiene arrangements are insufficient.  They should co-operate with

whatever hygiene regime they find, re washing hands, wiping feet, sanitising before entering certain areas etc. DRIVERS DELIVERING TO YOU If drivers deliver to your premises make toilet and washing facilities available to them if possible. They want to stay healthy too. IF SOMEONE REPORTS CORONAVIRUS SYMPTOMS  Get medical advice  Check HSE.ie re: symptoms  Send them home and ask them to self-isolate for two weeks.  Keep in touch with them at home re: worsening symptoms which may mean they need a test.  Check in with others working close with them for any symptoms  Re-assure employees that getting sick is not their fault and that their job is safe, as far as you can. ULTIMATELY All employers must put the health of their employees (and their families) first, before profits, market share, share price etc. Communities are watching how each company is dealing with this unprecedented crisis and companies will be judged good or bad based on what steps they took to protect their employees and how they minimised risk. Your reputation is on the line. WHAT I CAN OFFER TO CHAMBER MEMBERS I am available to offer free health and safety advice, direction, access to any resources that I have etc. to all Chamber members during this crisis. COVID-19

COVID-19:

Some Thoughts for Business Owners  By GER FOLEY, Comerford Foley

I

will not pretend to be an adviser that has all the answers for business owners on this. I absolutely don't. What I can say though is that I am a business owner myself and so I can relate to all the uncertainty that business owners are facing... a number have already been forced to make difficult decisions and many more will have to do the same over the coming weeks and months. These are extraordinary times. My view is that there are possibly three phases to this for business owners to process. INITIAL REACTION For certain industries the impact has been immediate and those business owners have been spending the last few days figuring out whether to stay open or close. For those that have closed there have been the difficult conversations with staff and the focus over

10

the last few days has been trying to understand the reliefs and supports that have been announced by the Government and arranging the logistics of those with their staff. For other industries, while the initial impact has not been as sudden on staff or work, there is still huge uncertainty. Every business knows they will be impacted, but they just don’t know the extent of it as yet. The movement to home working has been the first step for those that can do that. NEXT STEPS I always think things are clearer when viewed in front of you… on a spreadsheet, on paper... it doesn't matter what you use at this time but make the financial state of your business visible to you. This allows you to make decisions.

NETWORK • Q1 2020

HOW SHOULD YOU GO ABOUT THIS? 1. What are the current cash reserves of the business? 2. How much is currently owed to you from customers and what exposure do you think you have to debtors that just won't be able to pay in the short-term? This will not be because they don't want to pay but because they just won’t have the cash. 3. What is the sales pipeline or order book? This can be for services or for product/ manufacture. Then risk profile this pipeline i.e. based on the customer, their industry and what you know about how their business might be impacted, what is the probability of that order still being fulfilled and paid for? We are looking shortterm here – 3 to 6 months. 4. Determine what the profit margin will be on those sales that you view as still being certain. 5. What are the current fixed weekly or monthly costs of the business – rent, light & heat, insurance etc? (ignore wages or loan repayments for now) 6. What is your payroll cost on a weekly or monthly basis? 7. What are the business loan repayments on a weekly or monthly basis? You are now armed with data to allow you to make decisions. It may be possible to defer or get some

NETWORK • Q1 2020

extension from suppliers in relation to the fixed costs mentioned at point 5. The banks have said they will help. This situation is evolving and we await clarity on exactly what this help will look like. Contact your bank ASAP. Tell them you are trying to understand your position and will need support. Request from them a holiday or some other short-term reprieve from your loan repayments mentioned at point 7. Point 6 is the difficult one but if the numbers don’t add up you have to have a very transparent and open conversation with your team. Allow them to understand the numbers and see do they have suggestions or input to the conversation. LONGER TERM How we do business is going to change. That is for sure. We are in for a severe economic shock in the short-term. We are all in the same boat. All we can do in the immediate-term is to survive but more importantly help each other and our communities. • Show leadership as business owners in following the HSE advice. • Community needs to support their local economy more than ever by where possible using their products and services. • Local business which remains open and operational needs to support the community. This will be done through ease

of access, quality of service, coming up with innovative ways of ensuring the community have access to the products and services they want. • Businesses that remain strong have a responsibility not to take advantage at this time. They need to pay suppliers quicker than they have ever done. • Local and national government need to help business owners with whatever supports are needed. We need a period where everyone can focus on the health of the nation and doing what is right. This is the most important and will be the quickest way of addressing the virus. Ensure people’s mortgages, rents and at least basic earnings are protected so that they have that level of security. Over the coming weeks, as we understand more about what the medium-term future environment will look like, all business owners are going to have to consider their business models and consider how they can adapt to that environment. Can we make adjustments based on what that environment will look like to allow our business to continue in a different way? By dealing with the immediate we can start to ask ourselves these questions over the coming weeks. LOOK AFTER EACH OTHER.

DEBT ENFORCEMENT All debt enforcement activity is suspended until further notice. TAX CLEARANCE Current Tax clearance status will remain in place for all businesses over the coming months. RCT (Relevant Contract Tax) The RCT rate review scheduled to take place in March 2020 is suspended. This process assesses the current compliance position of each subcontractor in the eRCT system and determines their correct RCT deduction rate; ie 0%, 20% or 35%. As this process may result in a subcontractor’s RCT rate increasing due to changes in their compliance position, the review is suspended. Subcontractors and agents are reminded that RCT rate reviews can be self management in ROS. Subcontractors can check if their rate should be lower and can then ‘self review’ to get that lower reduction rate. CUSTOMS Critical pharmaceutical products will be given a customs ‘green routing’ to facilitate uninterrupted importation and supply.

COVID-19

Health is Wealth  By JEMMA KEHOE, Nutritional Therapist

T

his is a very unusual time in business. This is a time to value your health now more than ever. For those of you working with teams of people, it is imperative that those teams remain healthy and well to stay creative and productive in line with the demands that business now faces. The following article aims to help advise you how you can protect your immune system through diet and lifestyle support. The information I share below is just some of the many ways I plan to try and keep my family as healthy and resistant to infection as possible in the coming weeks and months. 1) EAT THE RAINBOW Add as much colourful fruits and vegetables to your plate as you possibly can. Think leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower, berries such as raspberries, blueberries and strawberries, peppers and sweet potato. Aim for a maximum of two servings of fruits per day and anywhere between five to seven servings of vegetables per day. Does this sound like a lot? To put it into and context, one day’s eating could look like this: add three to four tablespoons of berries to your breakfast, a bowl of fresh soup at lunchtime, some fruit as an afternoon snack and three different vegetables on your dinner plate. Et voila, you have now consumed between five and seven different coloured fruits and veggies, and your immune system will thank you for it!

16

2) ADD LOTS OF SPICES TO YOUR COOKING Fresh ginger, garlic, oregano and rosemary contain several antimicrobial properties. Dried spices such as black pepper and turmeric also have useful antimicrobial properties and should be added to your cooking as much as possible. One of my favourites ways to get extra fresh spices into my diet is by adding slices of fresh ginger to my herbal teas. So pop a teabag of lemon and ginger tea into a mug and add extra fresh ginger and maybe a slice of lemon or two for flavour and extra beneficial polyphenols. Indian and Thai inspired curries using lots of fresh garlic, ginger, turmeric, curry powder and some coconut milk makes the most amazing comfort food for this time of year. Coconut milk (canned) has several antimicrobial properties so is a perfect immune enhancing food too. 3) FOCUS ON YOUR FLUIDS Consuming an adequate amount of fluids helps to support the immune system. Hot drinks in particular such as broth and soups are very beneficial. Make home-made broth from chicken bones and use this as your stock in home-made soups. Herbal teas such as lemon and ginger, turmeric tea, green tea, or any other herbal or fruit tea are also great options. Avoid commercially produced juices and sweetened or fizzy drinks as the sugar content is harmful for the immune system.

4) SUPPLEMENT WITH VITAMIN D Due to our lack of exposure to strong sunlight in the winter months, it is safe to assume that most of us are deficient in vitamin D. Vitamin D works in several different ways by helping to reinforce the physical immune barriers in the respiratory tract, and also stimulate the immune cell response to viruses. If choosing a supplement, look for one in an oil base such as drops/spray or in a gelatin capsule and aim for between 1,000iu to 3,000iu’s daily (Martineau et al., 2017) for three–six months during winter/springtime. STAY WELL EVERYONE.  Jemma studied Nutritional Therapy at the Institute of Health Sciences where she graduated with distinction in 2010 and previous to this, qualified as a pharmacy technician with Trinity College Dublin. New Business Continuity Voucher goes live through Local Enterprise Offices

M

inister Humphreys introduces new measure as part of COVID-19 Business Supports Package The new Business Continuity Voucher is now available through Local Enterprise Offices and is open to sole traders and companies across every business sector that employ up to 50 people. The voucher is worth up to €2,500 in third party consultancy costs and can be used by companies and sole traders to develop short-term and long-term strategies to respond to the Covid-19 pandemic. The goal is to help business owners make informed decisions about what immediate measures and remedial actions should be taken, to protect staff and sales. Making the announcement, Minister Humphreys T.D. said, “I

know this is still a very worrying time for all businesses. And as part of the package of supports that I announced earlier in the month, I am making a €2,500 voucher available through the Local Enterprise Offices to enable enterprises to avail of vital business continuity advice, to assist them with developing short-term and long-term strategies to deal with the COVID-19 outbreak.” Richie Walsh, Head of Enterprise at Local Enterprise Office Waterford welcomed the new support package. “This is a critical time for small businesses. The

Green Deal Waterford

T

he European Union is committed to becoming the first climate-neutral bloc in the world by 2050. This requires significant investment from both the EU and the national public sector, as well as the private sector. The Waterford Green Deal is a new initiative supported by Waterford Chamber which promotes the ‘greening of Waterford’. Across the following pages we speak to Waterford-born Green Party MEP Grace O’Sullivan, we get tips and advice from the experts, find out what supports are available and what is already being done. The Waterford Green Deal initiative sees the coming together of public and private sectors to enhance the efficient use of resources by moving to a clean, circular economy, restore biodiversity and cut pollution. Reaching this target will require action by all sectors of our economy, including investing in

18

environmentally-friendly technologies, supporting industry to innovate, rolling out cleaner, cheaper and healthier forms of private and public transport, decarbonising the energy sector and ensuring buildings are more energy efficient. We will need to work with international partners to improve global environmental standards and secure funding to achieve our aims, which are all part of the wider ‘City of Opportunity’ initiative, which is also been driven through Waterford Chamber. As we promote Waterford as a great place to live, work, invest and do business to international audiences, the green agenda has to be recognised as a hugely significant player in terms of our future. Work has already commenced, as outlined by Waterford City & County Council in the following pages, but we need to do more and the Waterford Green Deal initiative will lead the charge in this regard. In essence, the over-arching vision is to make Waterford green (carbon neutral), clean (reduced/ no emissions) and vibrant (economic and social) and we need everyone to come together to play their part.

What is the European Green Deal? The European Green Deal is our roadmap for making the EU's economy sustainable. This will happen by turning climate and environmental challenges into opportunities across all policy areas and making the transition just and inclusive for all. The priority areas in the deal are:

CLEAN ENERGY: Opportunities for alternative, cleaner sources of energy

Green Deal European Funding Horizon 2020 is the current EU framework programme for research and innovation. A 350 million euro increase to the European Innovation Council (EIC) Pilot budget is expected to be adopted by the European Commission in March 2020, to support game-changing, market-creating innovation and deep-tech SMEs to scale-up, paving the ground for the launch of a ‘fully-fledged’ programme in Horizon Europe (2021-2027). A one-off EIC Accelerator call for ‘Green Deal’ start-ups and SMEs is expected, whereby all applicants submitting for the 19 May ’20 cut-off will need to demonstrate how their innovation contributes to the goals of The European Green Deal. Carbon Offsetting Carbon offsetting happens when a company or an individual invests in one or more environmental projects to balance out their greenhouse gas emissions. Carbon Offsetting Schemes help fund projects which aim to reduce future emissions. These projects can take the form of clean energy technologies such as solar panels or planting trees to help absorb carbon dioxide emissions from the air. GREEN DEAL

What it means for Waterford  By GRACE O’SULLIVAN MEP

T

he European Green Deal, launched by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in December, is a hugely ambitious growth strategy, designed in response to the existential threat of climate change. From a social, environmental as well as a business, economic and enterprise perspective, the Green Deal heralds a future where Green-thinking will come into play in decision-making across all aspects of our lives, including a particular focus on the world of commerce. We need to change - and fast because we are facing an unprecedented climate and biodiversity crisis that requires deep carbon emission cuts and the urgent protection and restoration of our ecosystems. The science is clear that if we fail to do this, the risks are enormous. ORIGINS OF THE EUROPEAN GREEN DEAL The roots of the Green Deal could be said to date back to the 1930s, when US President Franklin D. Roosevelt launched his “New Deal” in response to the challenges presented in the years following the Great Depression. The original New Deal was a series of public projects, financial reforms and ideas to provide relief and aid recovery. In more recent times The European Green Deal continued its journey with political momentum stemming as far back as the early 1970s, with the advent of

20

Green activism and the formation and work of Green/ecologicaloriented political parties. In the years leading up to its launch, the Deal has developed as an idea that, at its heart is about instigating action across all sectors of our economy, including investment in environmentallyfriendly technologies; supporting industry to innovate; rolling out cleaner, cheaper and healthier forms of private and public transport; decarbonising the energy sector; ensuring buildings are more energy efficient and working with international partners to improve global environmental standards. Instigating change at the massive level needed will be challenging, but the rewards are equally significant if we succeed. We will have more efficient, resilient communities and businesses, as well as cleaner air, water, healthier ecosystems for local communities and tourists to enjoy. To make all this happen the EU will also provide financial support and technical assistance to help people, businesses and regions that are most affected by the move towards the green economy. This is called the Just Transition Mechanism. It will help to mobilise at least €100 billion over the period 2021-2027. IMPACTS ON WATERFORD Bringing that sort of thinking closer to home, how will that impact on Waterford? With Green representation elected at all political levels,

Waterford people have used the ballot boxes to show an already-strong commitment to Green thinking. We have a Green MEP, (that’d be me!); a TD (Marc O Cathasaigh) and two Green Councillors (Jody Power and Laura Swift). The public support that has seen a massive increase in Green representation in Waterford presents the business community, too, with a mandate to respond to that ready-market with innovation and drive. With clever thinking we can build on the already proven success of our flagship Green enterprise, the Greenway. The Greenway has, in its short existence, lived up to and beyond all expectations, proving that the market is there for healthy, family-friendly activities. The spin-off has been excellent, with hospitality and tourism business and direct employment still growing. We can go a step further though, with possibilities around linking in with other cycle-routes, bringing in even more visitors which spells increased local revenue. More cycle routes into town from the likes of Dunmore and Tramore, more pedestrianfriendly walks and more public transport are other areas that offer positive opportunities for development, the movement of people and commercial spin-off, but in a way that’s healthy and sustainable. things companies can do straight away to make themselves greener

means more space for people, better air quality, warmer, more comfortable homes and buildings powered by renewables. Developments such as the innovative North Quays, which will be a blueprint for good planning and development with strong Green credentials, will make Waterford a showcase for how Green-cognisant design and decision-making across all sectors can reap benefits not just in terms of environment, but in terms of social and economic wins. In the areas of agriculture, fishing and the circular economy, there is also massive scope for enterprise and development. The European Green Deal wants to fund just transition. Just transition is about fairness, about allowing people in areas that are not eco-friendly to move to Greener ways of operating while being supported over the course of these positive transitions. As a county with a strong desire to develop research and innovation, again there are opportunities out there for Greenfriendly enterprise and innovations that can change the way we live, and move us all towards a greener environment. LOOKING TO THE FUTURE To make sure we are best-positioned to access the opportunities out there, a new approach is essential. Spurred on by the adoption by the European Commission recently, of the Circular Economy Action Plan, we must ensure

NETWORK • Q1 2020

that our business and enterprise decisions are firmly based on sustainability. Society, and business too, will see benefits in a move from the traditional linear model of “take, make and dispose,” to a circular economy model aimed at getting rid of waste and using and reusing resources. So for example, we would be looking at ‘lifelong’ products that can be renewed, repaired, upgraded and recycled and moving away from the ‘disposable’ nature of the world we live in. These sorts of ideas make economic as well as environmental sense. They also respond to consumer demand, with the general public becoming increasingly more mindful of the importance of protecting our environment and recycling. The European Green Deal, if done properly, will be nothing less than a revolution in how we move, how we heat our homes and power our factories, farm, fish, do business, everything. It aims to transform Europe into a modern, resource-efficient and competitive economy where there are no net emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050, where economic growth is decoupled from resource use and where no person and no place is left behind. From a Waterford perspective, this Deal offers opportunities for us all, to prepare for a more sustainable, socially and economically stable future, in a healthier planet.

CREATE A COMPANY CULTURE WITH GREEN THINKING Engage with your employees and create efficiency goals. This is a great way to engage your employees with the overall company goal but will also ensure that you get wide range of ideas and support for your sustainability initiatives. Make it fun and celebrate successes.

1

RECYCLE Ensure you have recycling bins in each office at designated locations. This is a super simple way to make your company green. Mini recycling trays on desks are another good idea. Employees can empty these into larger office recycling bins at the end of each day for maximum ease of use. Lead by example and your staff will be recycling too.

2

CREATE A GREEN PROCUREMENT POLICY This means sourcing good and services that are produced in a sustainable way. Create a policy that is in line with your company ideals, which might include reducing wate, lowering greenhouse gas emissions, conserving energy and water and using renewable energy sources.

3

TURN OFF THE HEAT & LIGHTS Make a rule that everything must be switched off when leaving the office overnight at the weekend and that lights should be turned off when not in a room. Make it interesting by asking people to donate to an environmental fund if they forget.

4

EMBRACE RENEWABLE ENERGY Organisations of any size can make the change to renewable energy. A range of technology from solar, wind and biomass are available to businesses. By making the change not only will you reduce the carbon footprint of your business, but you are also saving money on the future operating costs of the business.

Building a GREENER FUTURE  By CONOR WALSH, Managing Director, ENCON

R

educing energy use makes perfect business sense; it saves money, enhances corporate reputation and helps everyone in the fight against climate change. The simplest way to reduce carbon emissions is to use energy more efficiently. This overview introduces the main energy-saving opportunities that exist in building fabric, demonstrating how simple actions can save energy, cut costs, and increase staff well-being. Taking a “fabric first” approach is fundamental to the energy performance of a building. The building fabric refers to the roof, walls, windows, floors and doors of a building. Improving and maintaining the building fabric offers many advantages and opportunities:  Reduced energy and maintenance costs.  Better temperature control and thermal comfort for occupants.  Improved productivity: output and morale are enhanced through reducing draughts, solar glare, overheating, colder areas, as well as noise.  Lower capital expenditure: a more efficient, well-insulated building requires smaller heating and cooling systems, or even none at all.  Good investment: better insulation or well-maintained/modified building fabric can increase a building’s value and aesthetics.  Compliance with regulation: the Government stipulates a minimum efficiency requirement

24

for new buildings and major renovations for existing buildings. APPROACHES Typically, there are two approaches to improving the building fabric: whole-building refurbishment, or a single-measure approach. Whole-building refurbishment offers the opportunity to make significant energy savings and maximise the cost-effectiveness of upgrading the building fabric. For example, combining the installation of insulation with new windows will enable the design and deployment of an optimised low energy heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) solution. Single measures are targeted, often opportunistic, interventions and therefore the most common type of building improvement project. These often consist of either roof insulation, wall insulation, new windows or draught-proofing. Whilst this approach can achieve improved energy performance and comfort, it is important to consider how the improvement measure might impact on the function of the rest of the building. For example, adding insulation to a building should always be preceded by a review of ventilation provision to safeguard against surface or interstitial condensation occurring. BUILDING FABRIC AND ENERGY CONSUMPTION The design and specification of the building fabric is a major determining factor of energy use

in any building. Efficient, smart design reduces consumption and costs, and offers occupants comfort and flexibility. Both ventilation and air conditioning requirements are affected by building fabric, however heating usually has the largest overall energy cost implication and impact on thermal comfort. Typically, two thirds of the heat generated in a building is lost through the building fabric. The remaining third is lost through deliberate ventilation and uncontrolled infiltration through vents and gaps in the fabric, allowing warm air to leave and cold air to enter. Reheating the space to balance this loss can be an expensive waste of energy. The rate of heat loss depends on:  Internal and external temperature difference.  The rate at which the building fabric loses heat.  The amount of fresh (outside) air entering the building either by controlled ventilation or uncontrolled infiltration.  Fabric condition: a wellmaintained building loses much less heat, for example through being free from damp. ABOUT ENCON ENCON’s team of highly-skilled professionals and experienced tradesmen are led by Conor Walsh, a graduate of WIT, qualified in both Quantity Surveying and Carpentry and Robert Keohan who is the Contracts Director with over 10 years’ experience in Retrofitting Buildings.

GREENER WATERFORD Waterford City & County Council are actively working on a ‘Greener Waterford’. Here are just some of the initiatives which are currently underway and in the planning. CLIMATE ACTION PLANNING

BUILDINGS

In September 2019, the Council adopted its Climate Change Adaptation Strategy which commits the Council to a series of actions aimed at strengthening the resilience of the Council’s services and improving its capacity to deal with climate-induced impacts.

Waterford Council has been progressively upgrading the energy efficiency of its buildings over the past couple of years and, subject to funding, intends to implement a phased upgrade of all public buildings over the next five years. Recently, for example, Waterford Council has installed new heat pumps in two libraries in Waterford City and Dungarvan which together with new control systems will substantially reduce the energy requirements.

PUBLIC LIGHTING The energy bill for the circa 17,000 public lights across the City and County is the largest single item in the Council’s energy budget and most significant contributor to our CO2 emissions. Starting in late 2020, Waterford Council, as part of a southern region partnership with other Councils, intend to commence retro-fitting all of its existing SoN and SoX public lights with new highly-efficient LED light heads. This will not alone considerably reduce our energy bills and CO2 emissions but also significantly improve the network reliability and reduce maintenance costs as the LED lights have a service life of 20+ years by comparison to the 3-5 service life of the current units.

ELECTRICAL VEHICLE CHARGING Waterford Council currently provides free parking for Electric Vehicles in all its public car parks both while charging at the designated charging points or parked elsewhere in the car park. There are currently 22 public charging points available across Waterford and the Council is currently reviewing its policy with respect to EV charging points with a view to substantially increasing both the number and geographic spread of public EV charging points in conjunction with the recently announced SEAI scheme.

26

PUBLIC BIKE HIRE SCHEME Waterford Council, in conjunction with the National Transport Authority, is intent on introducing a public bicycle hire scheme (similar to those in Dublin and Cork) later this year which will see between 14 and 15 docking stations installed across the City.

SMART COMPACTOR BINS Waterford Council recently installed seven new solar powered compactor bins in the city centre - these bins have an in-built solar-powered compactor which compresses the litter and allows for longer intervals between emptying. The bins are also equipped with smart sensors to alert the operator when the bin is nearing capacity and needs to be emptied or serviced.

POLLINATION PLAN Waterford Council was one of the earlier adopters of the All Ireland Pollinator Plan and is actively working to achieve the actions committed to in the Plan - these would include for example revised grass mowing regimes in public open spaces and roadside verges to encourage the growth of pollinator-friendly wildflowers, the use of pollinator-friendly plants in the summer planting schemes, the planting of native trees and shrubs etc.

A FRESH LOOK AT WATERFORD

RETAIL

 By DAVID FITZSIMONS, Group Chief Executive, Retail Excellence

30

NETWORK • Q1 2020

TOWN REVIVAL For over a decade Retail Excellence has been working on numerous town revival initiatives. The pressure our towns and cities feel is not an Irish issue. It is a global issue. Our involvement with such organisations as the Federation of International Retail Associations (FIRA) and the Association of Town Centre Management (ACTM) has offered some very interesting insights into how to get towns and cities back on their feet. POSITIVE COLLABORATION The first point to make is that things are not as bad as they seem. We have all been led to believe that UK high streets are on their last legs however this is not true. Over 30% of UK high streets are actively growing footfall. It is no coincidence that each of these towns has a positive collaborative structure in place where local government work with local businesses and other stakeholders. Whether this takes the form of a Business Improvement District or a local partnership does not really matter. The key is that by working together in partnership solutions can be found. To underline this point Westfield Shopping Centres are a good indicator of the power of collaboration. In the UK they have amended their rent agreements with tenants to be turnoverbased. This means that they do not receive a flat monthly rent, they simply share a percentage of the tenant’s turnover. This ensures that they are actively engaged with and interested in the tenant’s wellbeing. They work with tenants to drive footfall and revenue. This methodology is bearing fruit with Westfield tenants all enjoying an average 8% growth in like-for-like revenue. Collaboration works. IMPROVING THE OFFER Too much is made of car parking charges in the town revival debate. To be frank you could pay people to park in some towns and they would not be bothered coming as the offer is too weak and simply

NETWORK • Q1 2020

does not entice the shopper. A good starting point for Waterford is to draft a list of stores which are missing from the city and go out and fight for then to invest for the city. The impact of an Avoca in the city would be immense or just imagine a Lush flagship store. They opened one recently in Liverpool and the store is thronged all day long. When JYSK opened their first store in Naas, Ireland it quickly became the second busiest of over two thousand stores. If enticing retail is in place, shoppers will come. While new retail investment is important, we cannot forget the equally important incumbent businesses. They also require our support. Retail development training programmes, shopfront schemes, town gift cards are just some ways to support the current retail and hospitality infrastructure. BEAUTIFICATION Everyone wants to enjoy a memorable shopping experience and public realm and housekeeping standards are central to this. When you look at the standards kept by Kildare Village you know that any town or city can do the same. Kildare Village is pristine with beautiful street furniture, planting, awnings. You cannot work in the Village without specific customer service training. Towns and cities need to apply the same vision. It is not just down to the City & County Council to apply these standards. It is down to all business owners to roll up their sleeves and deliver these standards. In fairness to Waterford, the city has some very impressive public realm. What’s not to like about a street with a roof! CITIZEN ENGAGEMENT When you look at how some retailers manage their social media and loyalty schemes, they in effect have built incredibly powerful communities. There is no reason why towns and cities cannot do likewise. Wouldn’t be amazing if

David Fitzsimons at the recent 'Waterford Retail - A Fresh Look' event. Waterford had a citizen database of thousands of citizens and every few weeks out goes a communication by bulk text and ezine telling people what is on in the city. Amazing events and occasions such as a food festival, outdoor cinema night, Easter egg hunt, duck race down the river and much more. Towns and places need to meet the needs of consumers and those consumers desperately want mid-week convenience and weekend experience. Waterford has to offer both. Mid-week convenience means the city is accessible and easy to get around and shop. Weekend experience is where people park up and enjoy a few hours in the city with something to do – hospitality, retail and one of those aforementioned events. While the Northern Quarter becomes a reality there is no reason that we cannot all work together on the exiting city. I do know that with the strong leadership team in the Council and some incredibly entrepreneurial business owners, the future of Waterford City is a bright one.  David Fitzsimons is Group Chief Executive Officer of Retail Excellence. David was involved with the establishment of Retail Excellence in 1995, when he worked with South Dublin Chamber. David oversees the strategic direction and operations of this not-for-profit organisation. David sits on a number of global retail committees including the NRF Global Retail Council.

Q: You began your career in AOL. Did the passion for tech or fashion come first?

A: My passion for entrepreneurship actually came first! When I was a child my grandad had his own business and I had a black briefcase filled with some of his blank order sheets, invoices and accounting pages that I would spend hours filling out and pretending I was the boss. This was shortly followed by fashion – I begged and annoyed until I got my first sewing machine when I was about eight. My passion for technology was a bit of a late bloomer but I caught up quickly when I got my first computer just as I started secondary school. Q: You have had a lot of support locally, from Waterford Local Enterprise Office, New Frontiers and South East BIC. How important is that support in terms of growing your business?

A: I got some amazing support and I still do – support, advice and chats are still regularly offered and are really helpful. It’s so important when starting a business to have access to a good support system. When I first started out, I didn’t know where to go or what my next steps should be. The New Frontiers Programme really helped me plot out my plan and gave me the groundwork to start building a viable business. to retailers when they are looking to the future?

A: An area of concern from some retailers I have been speaking to is that they are worried that the technology they use is too old and outdated to work with new innovate solutions. But you don’t need an overhaul to come into the digital age, for example we do not need you to be fully tech-enabled to plug into our software. I recommend building out a technology roadmap – it’s useful even for non tech companies!

A: So many challenges, starting a business is not for the faint-hearted! This journey has already been a thrilling rollercoaster ride, I have gotten some amazing experiences, it pushed me out of my comfort zone daily, but the low points have really tested my endurance and my ability to bounce back from rejection. It was a challenge for me at the start to hear criticism about the solution and face a lot of “no’s”, but I learned that the solution doesn’t matter if it is not going to efficiently work for my customers. From speaking to retailers, it is clear how eager they are to find technology solutions to some of their biggest problems. The best technology is not what is seen but what makes an impactful difference – customers still like a human touch. Waterford’s

Blue Plaque Trail

A Civic Trust Blue Plaque is a permanent sign installed on a building in a public place to commemorate a link between notable figures of the past and the buildings in which they lived or had some connection to. It is a unique way to highlight these special achievements and celebrate those who have helped to shape our heritage and history.

 By DES GRIFFIN, Waterford Civic Trust

T

he Blue Plaques in Waterford were installed by the Waterford Civic Trust who unveiled their plaque to Rosamond Jacob at 11 South Parade, Waterford, on International Women’s Day 2016. Rosamond Jacob (13 October 1888 – 11 October 1960) was an Irish writer and Quaker activist, born in Waterford, where she lived until 1920. She was a lifelong activist for suffragist, republican and socialist causes and a writer of fiction. She was a member of Sinn Féin from 1905 and later

34

Fianna Fáil. She was also a member of Cumann na mBan, the Gaelic League and the Irish Women's Franchise League. She opposed the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921 and was especially involved in leftwing and republican organisations in the 1920s and 1930s. She was imprisoned in Mountjoy Jail during the Irish Civil War. In 1931 she travelled to Russia as a delegate of the Irish Friends of Soviet Russia. She was involved in the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom and later in the Irish Housewives Association. Her first novel, Callaghan, was published in 1920, she published four more novels before her death in 1960. She also left multiple diaries that give a gripping insight into life in Ireland at that time. As Jacob was involved in the campaign for votes, she not only recorded what the campaigning was like but also what it was like to cast a vote in December of 1918 when Irish women (over 30) got the vote for the first time. Her diaries are

currently in the National Library of Ireland and numerous books and articles have been written about this historical Waterford lady.  Waterford Civic Trust is a registered charity and is a company limited by guarantee. AZZURRI MANUFACTURING RE-USABLE PROTECTIVE FACE MASKS In response to a shortage of certified respiratory face masks, Azzurri have developed a washable, re-usable, protective face mask, to assist in the protection against COVID-19. Azzurri’s industrial side has over 30 years’ experience producing personal protective clothing for emergency services, through their sister company, Waterford Uniforms. They have re-adapted a certified high-performance material for use in a face mask, to prevent virus droplets entering the nose and mouth. This is a re-usable protective face mask solution, where there is a shortage of supply of certified respiratory masks.

38

The decision to go down this road was made in the absence of face masks, made clear by the daily enquiries the company received saying they were left with nothing to protect their staff and loved ones. Azzurri are producing an initial batch of 5,000 face masks which will be provided free of charge, to local and regional nursing homes and health care organisation predominantly in the South East. Should there be a demand thereafter the Waterford company are preparing to gear up production further, offering these at the lowest possible price, to both the general public and healthcare organisations.

Waterford Chamber is now taking expressions of interest for its fourth Regional Leaders Programme. The programme, run with the support of Waterford Chamber Skillnet and Bausch + Lomb, has become an integral part of the business community of Waterford and the wider region, having nurtured and developed a culture of mentoring for business owners and their employees. “There is some knowledge that can only be gained through personal experience or by learning from the experience of others. The Regional Leaders Programme introduces you to a wide-ranging network of mentors and speakers with invaluable experience. These individuals are honest, open and willing to share their stories. The 1:1 and group facilitated sessions allow for self-awareness, professional knowledge sharing, discovery of career opportunities, and networking. An excellent development programme that I would highly recommend.” – Claire Williams, Chia Bia

It has been well prepared and executed. ” – Elaine Fennelly, Crystal Valley Tech

“I found many aspects of the Regional Leaders Programme very beneficial. The one-to-one sessions allowed me to gain different perspectives and learnings from the experiences and personal stories of entrepreneurs and business leaders. The group sessions provided great insight into the leadership skills and the development and implementation of strategies. I would highly recommend the programme to anybody who is looking to grow and develop both personally and professionally, but I think based on my personal experience it would be very beneficial to business owners who are looking for a broader perspective to apply to their own business going forward.” – Derek Lowry, Almega Business Consulting

“This programme assists one in thinking out of the box in so many ways. I have become more in-tune with my impact within the workplace than ever before. So many incredible mentors offered their time and energy to give insight into how they made their mark within industry and to guide and encourage. Each offered a variety of input from marketing, communications, price structures, strategy planning and other. I would like to thank them for offering more and going above and beyond!” – Janice Taylor, Taylor & Associates

“The engagement and commitment from Mentees in terms of looking at their personal style and business to improve and make them better is so encouraging and inspirational.” – Nora Widger, Theatre Royal

It offers excellent networking opportunities, one-to-one mentoring and group mentoring sessions. You meet like-minded individuals and get to know some very well, as you meet on several occasions throughout the year. Personally, I have benefited in many ways from the programme. Irish Chamber Network Delegation to Brussels A

t the outset of President Von der Leyen’s Commission Presidency, Chambers Ireland led a delegation, which included Waterford Chamber, to Brussels, to meet with EU officials from across the European Commission, the Irish Regions Office and the Permanent Representative of Ireland to the EU to discuss matters of importance to the Irish business community during this new legislative term. Issues that were examined during the two-day visit included the European Green Deal, future EUUK relations, ways to deal with the rising global tide of protectionism, international taxation and the need to leverage EU FTAs for SMEs across Ireland and the wider EU. Speaking after the trip, Gerald Hurley, Waterford Chamber CEO noted the extraordinary economic impact the EU has had on Ireland. “In the last decade, the EU was tasked with addressing the impacts of the financial crisis. The next ten years pose a very different set of challenges, where we must decarbonise the economy and invest in our cities and regions so that they are adapted to a net-zero carbon future. “There are many opportunities for Irish business through proactive

44

engagement with the EU, but Brussels legislators must also be cognisant of the impact that widereaching regulation can have, not only on small companies, but small economies. “The departure of the UK from the EU, and the loss of their support on matters where we shared a common view, means that Ireland must now focus even more of its attention to influence the legislative and policy agenda of the EU. As Waterford’s largest business organistaion, we, along with our Chambers Ireland colleagues, will be playing a very active part in ensuring that the voice of Irish businesses is heard by European legislators. “We want the next Government to constructively engage with the opportunities that the European Green Deal offers, particularly when it comes to accessing sustainable green finance which will aid

us in transforming our transport network, developing renewable energy and supporting innovation. “We’re also calling on the next Government to maintain Ireland’s commitment to open, rules-based international trade, particularly as we adapt to the effects of the UK’s departure from the bloc. As set out in recommendations made by the OECD, more of our SMEs need to think global and be supported to internationalise so they can become more productive. Past Governments prioritised the Action Plans for Jobs. The next Government must commit resources to support SMEs to access new markets, particularly in new FTA countries. If we want our economy to become more sustainable, we must do more to support our indigenous industry to compete globally.”
