Water crisis in Flint
History and facts on the fresh water situation in Flint, MI.
T
he people of Flint have gone years living in unknown terror, and only now have the horrors of their water crisis been exposed. Flint has been experiencing high levels of lead in their water supply and put the city into a state of emergency, leaving the citizens of Flint in fear and in need of healthy, clean water. This all started in 2013 when the city decided to save money by changing their water supply from Lake Huron, which they were paying Detroit for, to the Flint River, which was known for being polluted from the industrial city. One year later in 2014, complaints from locals start pouring in and the water was tested. The results came back positive for E. coli bacteria, yet little to none actions were set to make the water safer and residents continue to drink the contaminated water. Then in February, 2015 a consultant hired by the city claims that the water is safe to drink ignoring the high level of sediment and discoloration. By April of 2015 Flint announces they have failed the Safe Drinking Water Act and soon after switches back to the Detroit water system, the damage is too far gone and a state of emergency was

declared in Flint and the National guard was brought in to help distribute water and filter. Most recently, the city has linked the use of the Flint river water to Legionnaires’ disease which has caused 10 deaths. Mona Hanna-Attisha, a lwocal resident and doctor Children’s Hospital in Flint, is credited for the exposure of the sickly water. In September of 2015, Hanna-Attisha and her team were analyzing patient’s blood and noticed high levels of lead which had seeped into the Flint water supply. “What we found was alarming, but not surprising, based on what we knew about the water” HannaAttisha said in an interview with the Oakland Press. Hanna-Attisha held an emergency press conference to alert the people of Flint that their water was unsafe to drink. Besides the plumbing of Flint being permanently damaged, there is also human damages that are unchangeable. “What’s so damning about lead poisoning is you see the problems forever,” Hanna-Attisha said. “It

In 10 years, we’re going to see kids with behavioral problems like ADHD. In 15 years, we’re going to have more kids with criminal justice issues.” The chaos of the Flint water crisis has caused major worldwide media attention and even brought music artists like Meek Mill, Cher, and Pearl Jam to donate water and urged their fans to do so too. Local radio stations and news stations such as Channel 95.5 and Fox 2 have done bottled water drives to get residents to donate and raise awareness of the crisis occurring in Flint. Governor of Michigan Rick Snyder, repeatedly blamed for the crisis in Flint, says, “I am sorry; we will fix this,” In his recent State of the State address, also saying “You deserve accountability. You deserve to know that the buck stops here, with me. Most of all, you deserve to know the truth.”
Lead poisoning in children can cause a drop in mental and physical development, and even death.

You cant really just blame one specific party on it, I think it’s just a complex entanglement that happened, part of it’s probably on Snyder, because he knew of the murky water that people were drinking.
Multiple people are responsible for the Flint water crisis, mostly those overseeing the water problem are responsible. I’m only affected because my taxpayer dollars are going to fix it.
In April 2014, in an effort to save $5 million, Flint switched from purchasing Lake Huron water from Detroit to treating water from the Flint River.

Living gluten free
What is the difference of living gluten free and living with Celiac Disease? BY RILEY GREGART Staff writer rileygregart@waterforddrift.com
S
o what is gluten anyway? Well it’s a mixture of proteins found in wheat and related grains including barley and rye. People can have celiac disease or a gluten intolerance and not eat gluten. Yet a lot of people just don’t eat it. Why is that? Although it forces others to find healthy alternatives is it really all it’s cracked up to be? People think it can do things like cure obesity, diabetes and cataracts. When really evidence against gluten is unsubstantiated by science so there is no need to stay away from gluten unless you have celiac disease. Eating whole grains and cereals an important part of a healthy balanced diet, which is the goal right? People say they feel better without gluten but this is probably due to the fact that they were cutting out a lot of processed foods and fast foods out of their diet. This occurs in one out every 133 patients
in the general population. Celiac disease is a disease that can only be cured by going on a strictly gluten free diet for the rest of their lives. This seems to be the only cure doctors have found. Celiac affects people by provoking an autoimmune response that attacks the small intestine. The long term result can increase risk in gastrointestinal malig nancies and low bone density. if celiac disease goes untreated then it can lead to other autoimmune diseases such as hypothyroid ism, type one diabetes, and connective tissue diseases. If celiac runs in the patents family then they have a five percent chance of having it . So patients do have celiac they probably find it very hard to find good gluten free options. Gluten seems to sneak its way into everything. Even cosmetics and some
GF
toothpastes. Eating out with celiac can also be quite the challenge. Although certain things say they are gluten free you have to make sure they are made on a separate pan and do not touch anything with wheat. You have to be very careful with cross contamination. Also if patients have celiac you most of the time have to stay away from barley as well. And technically food companies only have to list the top 8 allergens in bold on the bottom. Barley is not in the top 8 so although something may be wheat free it might have barley. So if you have celiac you have to read through the ingredients on all things almost always because barley will make you just as sick. A lot of pizza places in Waterford do have gluten free personal pizzas. But be careful of cross cantamination, if you tell them that you have celiac a lot of pizza places will be very careful. Also The Bakery on Dixie highway offers a ton of gluten free and celiac safe options.

Waterford Kettering’s athletics are sometimes overlooked and assumed sub-par but WKHS’ winter sports never disappoint. Kettering girls basketball is known to dominate the KLAA north and the WKHS wrestling team has been very successful under coach Brett Hanna. Waterford united sporting events such as hockey games, skiing events, and bowling events bring Kettering and crosstown rival Mott onto the same side so the community can cheer for the same team.

On January 27th, Waterford Kettering high school hosted the annual league championships. Kettering wrestling is a participant in the KLAA North division where they placed first in 2016. Kettering wrestling has been dominant in the KLAA north division the past decade, placing first just about every year.
Waterford Kettering may not be known for the most successful boys basketball team, but are in fact full of talent. The Boys are currently at four wins and 12 losses in the KLAA North division. Justin Bonner (left picture, number 23) possesses great talent for the team. Bonner is very strong around the rim. arrogant as LeBron, and Curry seems to be a team player.” Liking a player for his or her skill is one thing, but a like in their personality and attitude is often a great source of thought. “I used to like LeBron, I just feel like he is cocky and he thinks he is better than he actually is,” Spencer said. Despite the fact Curry’s attitude towards the game has contributed to his fan base, so has his skill. Just recently Curry has become the first player in NBA history to make at least 11 threepointers in a game multiple times. One cannot argue Steph Curry is a danger behind the three point line, considering Curry has consecutively made 76 three pointers in a row at practice last season. “I like Curry better than LeBron because he can shoot, handle the ball better than LeBron and he’s not cocky, he’s humble,” senior Elija Hill said. So the question will still remain to stand, who is the better basketball player? Steph Curry or LeBron James?

here has been much debate whether or not Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors is the elite basketball player some may perceive him to be. Some may ponder over him as if he’s a god like figure, or some may like him for what he does best; which is his infamous ability to shoot 3 pointers with ease. Given that Steph Curry is often considered the best in the league at the moment, some do believe LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers may have the advantage. Taking a look at Steph Curry’s personal life, you will find that he is son of Dell Curry, a former NBA player and sibling of Seth Curry, a current NBA player. With that saying, Curry has basketball in his blood. But not always will having an athletic family bring a player glory. There is much more to it. “I like Steph Curry more than LeBron,” junior Tanner Spencer said. “I think Curry is a better player, he’s not as

e catches the ball, then he shoots the ball. Right off the dribble, and straight into a step back. No need to watch the ball fall through the basket, he knows it’s going in. Stephen Curry is known for his lethal ability to drain three’s, and it’s something that comes with ease. Stephen Curry swamps the leader boards for most three’s in one season. Last season Curry set the record for making 286 three pointers in one season. The two years before that, the 2012-2013 season, Curry made 272 three pointers in one season setting the second place record for most three’s in one season. Through Curry’s first six season’s in the NBA, Curry had shattered the record for most three pointers through six seasons. Curry had put up a total of 1191 three’s, followed by Ray Allen whom only got 928 through his first six seasons. Curry’s infamous shot off the dribbled had also shattered records in the 2014-2015 season. Curry had set the record for the most three pointers off of the dribble, making 147 of them and over 43 percent. Many hesitate to say Curry may be the best shooter of all time. At the age of 26, Curry is entering his prime and if he continues his record breaking pace he may be looked at as the best shooter in NBA history. At the start of this year’s season(2015-2016) Curry led the Golden State Warriors to a tremendous amount of team records. Golden State started off the season with a 24-0 record, the best start to a team in NBA history and Curry was a great contributor to the team’s success. Curry had racked up a total of 125 three pointers in Golden States 24-0 winning streak. Whether or not Curry will remain to stay on the track of smashing NBA records, he has significantly proved his self worth as the point guard who can drain three’s.

t the age of 31, LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers is an older player compared to somewhat younger aged Steph Curry at age 27. Although LeBron may be on the older side of the athletic spectrum, he has been a top contender in the league since he was first drafted in 2003 by the Cleveland Cavaliers. At the current moment LeBron is known worldwide as one of the best basketball players in the NBA, and some extreme fans may think he is the best ever. His twitter account user name @KingJames, is not too far off the title some supporters may give him. After all, James has won two NBA championships and two gold medals after participation with team USA’s Olympic basketball team, and those are just few of the “King’s” achievements. Many supporters of LeBron favor him for his ability to lead his team to wins. “Wherever LeBron goes he is going to win,” sophomore Anthony Fox said.

Taking a look at the 2014-2015 NBA season, LeBron’s addition to the Cleveland Cavaliers lead the Cavs to the NBA championship with a 5329 record in the regular season, and a 14-6 postseason record which ended in a loss in the NBA finals . Prior to LeBron’s return to Cleveland last season, the Cavs finished the 20132014 season with a losing record 3349. Many supporters of LeBron have liked him for his reputation in the league, and simply the fact he has been playing a very long time. “I think LeBron is better than Steph Curry because he has a great reputation in the NBA,” junior Cal LeMarbe said. “I still like Curry but I just think LeBron is better, he’s been in the league for awhile now.” Only facts go to show that LeBron James is in fact a top contender in the NBA. But the question will remain. Who is the better player? Stephen Curry or LeBron James?
n order to start a fire, a spark must be present. LeBron James who was first drafted into the NBA in 2003 by the Cleveland Cavaliers was an instant success and undoubtedly created a large fan base in Cleveland. The spark which led to angry fans occurred when LeBron made two choices that may have been the hardest two choices he would ever make in his basketball career: Leaving Cleveland for the Miami Heat in 2010, and then returning to the Cavaliers in 2014. The first flame of anger had actually taken place when LeBron had left the Cavs in his journey to the heat. Upset fans of Cleveland had burned LeBron’s jersey which read the number 23, after he had left the Cavs and changed his number to 6. Angered fans were not done yet. When LeBron had left the Miami heat to go back to the Cavs in 2014, the same thing occurred. Fans of Miami not only had burned his jersey, but they also took to the streets and gratified out billboards and posters that displayed LeBron in his Heat jersey. Some of the captions that covered his face of billboards read “Thanks LeBron.” So why such anger out of the fans? Well taking a look at LeBron’s success, after LeBron had decided to leave each franchise he joined became a powerful contender- while the other began to struggle in the league. The actions taken by some of LeBron’s ex fans go to show how much fans cared for LeBron and how effective LeBron really is to a franchise’s success. Only time will tell if the fire kindled up by LeBron through his career with both the Heat and the Cavaliers will come to a cool down. But for now LeBron will remain wearing a Cleveland Cavaliers jersey, and it’s up to the fans to decided whether or not to support him.

Winter sports on thin ice Many winter sports have been affected by the lack of snow and warm temperatures BY JASON ACCIAIOLI Staff Writer Jasonacciaioli@waterforddrift.com
“Last winter was great we had a lot of snow and good conditions for snowboarding. This winter sucks because the hills are icy and it’s not even worth the money to go.” Maddie Fields, 10
“It has been a very disappointing winter for snowboarding and I have not gone a whole lot. The ski lodges are really hurt by this and they probably lose a lot of money.”
M
any people would say this mild winter is great, but when you ask winter athletes, it’s a very different story. Due to the lack of snow this year, it has been a bad season for all winter activities. Skiers and snow boarders have had a very late start this year. Ski hills were not open daily until early January; whereas last year they were open in late November. In anticipation of a full winter, some people bought season passes. This below average winter has made that an unwise investment this year. Even though the hills are open now, most slopes are not in the best condition. “The hills are poor there is barely any snow up there, it is all ice and fake snow. There is no real snow,” said sophomore Jeremy Carver who snow boards. The terrain parks are not completely built yet because there is not enough snow to build them, normally by this time of year they are completely built. Many people go there for the jumps but it is not worth it because there are not a whole lot of good jumps yet. Lots of people are missing out on snowboarding and skiing. “I can’t go every Friday like I normally would because of the bad weather, I have only been snowboarding once this year” said sophomore Maddie Fields Compared to last year’s winter this winter is terrible. The weather has not been consistent enough for the snow to remain long term and that is why the ski lodges
have to constantly make artificial snow. The Waterford United Ski Team is also missing out. They rely on snow for competitions, and without that snow they cannot compete. The ski team normally practices at Pine Knob ski resort, due to the bad winter their season started later than normal and has not been consistent. Not only has there been little snow, but the temperatures have also been warmer. A few weeks before Christmas there were people mowing their lawns. On Christmas some people were even spotted jet skiing and water skiing. Due to the warmer weather conditions the lakes took a lot longer to freeze over. “The lakes did not freeze over to the point where we could skate on them until like January 10th,” said Junior Cal Lemarbe. Students who do winter activities such as ice fish, ice skate, and snowmobile, have also been affected by this mild winter. It is hard to have fun on the lake when the temperature is 50 in late January early February. “It’s been a long boring winter. Not much snow, not much fun,” said Lemarbe Many people may ask why we are having such a mild winter. The answer to that is El Niño (the warming of the Pacific ocean that occurs every few years and brings warmer temperatures around the planet) according to National Geographic. If this trend continues, there may eventually be no snow.

ne thing that many student athletes don’t realize is how little time most will actually have to play the sports that they’ve been playing since elementary school. Outside the very few that will play at the collegiate level, most students only have about four years to play. Senior Timmy Hagelin had the realization that most seniors have when it gets close to the end of their last season. Hagelin is a state qualifing wrestler and also an all-conference football player who grew up playing both sports as a kid. “I started playing football in about third grade and I started wrestling in seventh, and have played both ever since” said Hagelin. With only about four years of wrestling before he qualified to wrestle at states, Hagelin has both natural talent and skill. Hagelin is currently projected to place at states wrestling at 152 lbs. Hagelin also took first place at the oakland county meet that took place during December. He beat out rival Corbin Moorer who is also a state qualifier from Mott. Although he is most well known for his wrestling he is also an outstanding football player. Hagelin lead the captains in total tackles (19), sacks (five), and also rushed for a pair of touchdowns on offense. Through his four years at Kettering Hagelin has made a name for himself as one

of the best all around athletes. For most waterford athletes the Mott vs Kettering game is the biggest game of the year but for Hagelin, it’s just another game. “I don’t treat it more important than any other game during the season,”said Hagelin “Every game is just as important as the next, it’s important not to focus on a certain game too much.” The rivalry brings the whole community together for one of the most entertaining games of the season. Being a student athlete is much harder than most people that aren’t involved in sports think. Student athletes struggle balancing the responsibilities they have such as keeping your grades up even though every day of the week they have hours of practice. Hagelin on the other hand has no problem with the pressure of keeping his grades up during the season. Hagelin was one of the many captain football players that qualified for the academic all-state award. This award is given to only four teams in each of the eight playoff divisions but the teams must first qualify. “I currently have a 3.1 GPA because I am able to get my homework and other assignments during my academic center,” said Hagelin.

The bright and busy Bernas The commitments of senior Emily Bernas take her far beyond the average high school student BY BROOKE BOYER Assistant Editor-in-Chief brookeboyer17@waterforddrift.com

enior Emily Bernas sprints off the court and rips off her varsity basketball jersey after a long game and throws her choir dress on that was awaiting her on the sideline on over her basketball shorts and shoes. With absolutely no time to spare, she scurries from the gym to the Performing Arts Center, she was just in time to make it for the last song in the holiday collage concert. Being in two places at one time is what can happen when you are a committed and involved student like Bernas. She is on the varsity basketball team, a part of National Honor Society, school musical productions, chamber choir and travel basketball. She also works for Parks and Recreation on the weekends. Aside from her rigorous extra curricular schedule, she also challenges herself academically by taking difficult classes. “To maintain success in each of these activities I just make sure that I stay to a schedule and try my best to not mess up the schedule I set for myself,” Bernas said. “I do the same things almost every day and it has become a habit for me in order to just get everything done.” It’s no question whether or not Bernas is a busy and committed student. The question most people may have for her is how she can manage her stress level. She believes that it’s ultimately someone’s own choice to be committed to a lot of things and that having a passion for what you commit too is beneficial and makes any amount of stress,
12
even if it is a lot, worth it for her. “You just can’t expect yourself to do too much and if you are a person who is always really lazy and not active, then you are going to have to cut something out,” Bernas said. “Ultimately you should just make sure that you’re able to do what you’re going to do before you just jump into doing it.” Bernas believes that her biggest strength would have to be basketball or math. She has signed to play basketball for Albion College and plans to study business administration in college. She has taken classes like AP calculus, AP literature, marketing and accounting to prepare her for her college studies. As someone may know, whether or not you have a passion for the sport you are in you may find yourself feeling overwhelmed or stressed. Bernas anticipates something different in the aspect of playing basketball in college. Mainly because being in basketball is what keeps her calm and relieves any and all amounts of stress she has. “I do think I will be a little stressed only because it will be something new but I have heard from other college students that you don’t have class every single day,” Bernas said. “There will be time for other things.” “With basketball, I think it will help me stay calm in college. That will bring normalcy to it all because it is going to be something that I am used to having,” Bernas said.

The age of Tumblr
How today’s Millennials became Tumblr’s activBY REBECCA PAGNUCCO Illustrator rebeccapagnucco@waterforddrift.com
S
ince its foundation in 2007, Tumblr has been the stomping ground for multiple kinds of internet content. From memes to the frightening Justin Bieber fandom, the site hosts pop-culture in a super easy fashion. More recently, Tumblr has given promise to a very large portion of its community through the emergence of wildly large African American culture and pro-equality bloggers. With blogs containing African-American art, cinema and other types of mediums, Tumblr has become a safer space for teen and young adults to embrace their race, whatever they may be, in an intellectual and very expressive manner. In February 2012, there was a shift in the content of Tumblr-viral one liners posts. Among the funny phrases of sleeping all the time and wanting to be Beyoncé, there were hilarious retorts about “white boys” and the virtues of being African American. With media placed on racism and police brutality, the community of Tumblr wanted to react to everything happening in the world. And everyone did. Those who reblogged photos of minimalist art and cutesy text posts the need to express their personal opinion with their 600 followers. Tumblr youth began watching “Orange is the New Black” the next year and admiring her courage and smarts, so they did what they do best: expressing their opinion and opening room for discussion, learning and growth. And what better outlet than Tumblr, the manic, throthy happy place of the world wide web. After the Spring Valley High School incident last October where a police officer attacked a high school girl, anger was growing in the hearts of users on Tumblr. Feeds were dominated by GIFs, images, videos and posts about Spring Valley High and Deputy Ben Fields. Three months later, social activist bloggers are still fuming. Posting stories, experiences and articles under the hashtags #BlackLivesMatter and #SayTheirName. Along with posts about feminism, inequality, and body shaming, it’s safe to say today’s millennials can be named the social activists of Tumblr. Millennials have been tagged as apathetic and uncaring by their elders, when really they have a fire growing in their hearts for social issues. On other social media site such as Facebook and Twitter people usually only engage with people they know. On Tumblr, users have the chance to connect through interests and themes. The anonymity feature allows users the chance to speak up without being known. Social-justice movements are always active on Tumblr, and gains speed when shocking news and protests happen. After Sandra Bland died while in custody of police, there were extreme spikes in the use of “social justice” and “black lives matter” tags. Since Tumblr users can post anything from GIFs to word posts, and reblogging is very easy, this is an ideal stomping ground for media that may not be exactly acceptable on Twitter or Facebook. The past national movements within the black community didn’t have access to social media. Without tweets and posts, we would have forgotten about Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, and Michael Brown.

The only downside of using Tumblr for social activism are the negative responses that can be sent. While they may be very unpleasant, it can help activists develop a thicker skin. As usual, the obtuse and bigoted responses came flowing into the inboxes of people who had a large sum of followers. A simple sentence could set a 17 year old off on a rant about racism and acceptance. Most often is it basic hatred sent by “anons” that anger those on the path of confusion and self-discovery. The virtual aura of these bloggers can be very hostile and even sometimes mean, causing some to point fingers. As dramatic as it may be, the development and popularity of racism discussions in a large group can inform those completely unaware of what white privilege and racism even mean. Everything that a person will need to know can learn from a self-taught population that is apt to take over the world, one gif’d exclamation at a time.

These traits are ideal for people to have, and they are fairly common. However, their origin changes from person to person based on their beliefs. “I’m not religious at all,” Wagner said. “I don’t need a higher power or a figurative being to look up to.” As of today, Americans are gradually shifting towards an atheistic mindset just like Wagner’s. According to The 2014 Religious Landscape Study, conducted by Pew Research Center, the share of Americans who say they are “absolutely certain” God exists has dropped drastically from 71 percent in 2007- when the same study was conducted- compared to 63 percent in 2014. Around one-half of millennials say they claim to believe in God with absolute certainty. This is evidence of a shift in mindset in the younger generation. Continued on page 18... FEBRUARY 17, 2016

For her, she felt she wasn’t crazy about God right off the bat. “It took a lot of chipping away, it felt like God was just chipping away at my cold heart and giving me people in my life that will encourage me,” Jade said. “If you have faith you HAVE faith, there’s no in between. your heart, it changes your mind, and you become a new person right then and there.” For Kiana, the younger of the two, the strength in her faith came when she heard God at her church’s camp two summers ago. It was a Wednesday altar call, where she and all her peers sat on the floor, eyes closed, hands in laps, and heads bowed down in prayer. In the distance soft music was playing, and through the speakers in the room echoed her youth pastor Billy Foster leading the prayer. Leaders of the camp went from camper to camper laying their hands on their heads to pray over them. Foster eventually made his way to Kiana, but after he left, Kiana was sitting there astonished by what had just occurred. “After I heard God actually talk to me I opened my eyes and no one was behind me, it was just me,” Kiana said. “That was when I broke down, I was sobbing... that’s when my faith was real.” Kiana explains that what she heard over and over again was, “I forgive you, I forgive you, I forgive you.” Kiana’s experience was something she would never take for granted. “I needed to physically hear it from him that he forgives me We’re so big in our religion and I have over everything, and over every lost friends over it but at the end of the day, I mistake I’ve ever made,” Kiana like where I am right now in my life with the said. “From that day forward I people that are there to support me and also changed my whole life around,” believe in the same things I do. Christianity is a religion that originated from Judaism. Contrastingly however, Christians believe in the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. Christian origins start with Jesus of Nazareth. Christians in present day spend a lot of time doing mission work and living as much like Jesus as possible.
ATHEISM
Sisters Jade and Kiana Lamb are slowly becoming a part of the growing minority of highly religious young Millennials. Their relationship with God, their commitments they make to their church, and their devotion to praising the Lord is rare to find amongst most public high schools. According to Pew Research Center which conducted The 2014 Religious Landscape Study, only four out of 10 Millennials say religion is very important to them. This could suggest a multitude of options, maybe the Millennials don’t see the value in faith. Maybe Millennials are too busy with this changing and growing world of technology to take a break to attend a religious service. Or maybe, Millennials are developing a mindset of their own on religion rather than following in their parents footsteps. The Lamb sisters grew up in a home of believers in God, but due to the circumstances, they often didn’t attend church. “We’ve came a very long way from where we first started,” Kiana said. “When we were younger we didn’t really go to church, my mom never really had time for it because she was a stay at home mom, she was just too busy.” Although both of the sisters attended church during their youth, it was nothing compared to their attendance now. Between the two of them they attend church twice a week for a total of 11 hours. Contrastingly to the Lamb sisters, the same study conducted by Pew Research Center reported that 28 percent of younger Millennials attend religious services more than once a week. While 56 percent said they

These four also created Spiderman, The Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, the X-Men and many more. The most famous of them all, Stan Lee has worked his way from a Marvel writer all the way to the former president and chairman of the company. He moved the company from a small publication making only comics to a large multimedia publication which expanded their previous print capabilities. Marvel’s multimedia influence throughout the globe has made them one of the world’s most profiting companies. Earning money through movies, television, comic books, toys, video games and clothing, they are able to make billions in profit. Their most retailed superhero is Spiderman, profiting at just over 1.3 billion dollars, which is about 800 million more dollars than any other superhero in the world. Marvel’s superhero lineup includes Spiderman, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and The Hulk, along with groups such as The Fantastic Four, X-Men, and The Avengers. These superheros also are paired up with some iconic villains such as Doctor Doom, the Green Goblin, Red Skull, Loki and Magneto. Disney bought out Marvel in 2009 for 4 billion dollars and continues to expand the monopoly.Since then they’ve made tremendous progress, creating The Avengers, Marvel’s top grossing film and the fifth grossing film of all time. They plan on carrying out Marvel’s legacy, releasing movie schedules from now untill 2019.

C Comics was the pioneer of superhero comic strips, founded in 1934 in Burbank, California. Army Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson was an American pulp magazine writer when he decided to create National Allied Publications in the fall of 1934. They created their own comic book, New Fun: The Big Comic Magazine #1 cover dated February 1935. The finext four issues were published by Funnies, Inc. then the Fifth by WheelerNicholson himself. The sixth issue is when the iconic writers of DC, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, who also created Superman in the 1940’s. Bill Finger, Paul Dini, Bob Kane, and Bruce Timm, creators of the Batman comics, are some of DC’s comic book hall of fame writers along with Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. These DC writers paved the way for future historic comic writers such as Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. In 1989, Time Warner bought DC comics making them a multimedia company expanding them from just print to every type of revenue. They share number two and three of the most profiting superhero figures ever with Batman (500 million dollars) and (280 million dollars). he powerful lines of a full hearted girl confessing her love to the boy she cannot be with, a classic battle written in the most poetic way. The topic of romance, and novels written about it have shifted far from these classic quotes. Stories of admiration and infatuation have turned into books of betrayal and dishonesty. The situations where romance is found in today's society and what romance to us is all about, has shaped the way we write this genre. Given the classic steppingstone authors like Shakespeare provided, the ways we write about romance now reflect a different expression of love. Our society’s ideas of what acts of romance are have influenced the way we picture “storybook romances” to be. Instead of confessing one's love off of a balcony using iambicpentameter, a simple “good morning!” text is read as a sign of affection. When we hear the word “romance” the color red, flowers and chocolate hearts are some of the connotations I would connect to the word. But what isn't always thought of is literature. I find that literature can be just as romantic as stuffed teddy bears and the red heart emoji. Today when you pick up a juicy romance novel, your mind doesn’t go to the classic Elizabethan age literature, the birth time period for romance. Mostly because it’s adapted to what society today deems “romantic”. Literature today is straying away from over the top confessions of feelings, and began creating stories around simple situations like a boy giving his coat to a girl when she’s cold. The situations that are written about no longer concern your family's name and the star crossed love from across the village, our time period no longer looks at this as an everyday thing. Situations where romance is found today is just about anywhere, and that's how

The water crisis in Africa needs our community’s help
iving in America my whole life, I’ve never experienced any of the real world problems that seem so distant to people like you and me. For years I have lived my daily life without giving the privileges like clean water and food a second thought, until about a year ago. I have always been interested in cultures other than my own, but over the past few years doing research, watching the news, and immersing myself in foreign culture has really opened my

A Drop of Hope is a campaign I create through The Water Project to raise money for communities in Africa that don’t have a clean, sustainable water source.
eyes. After reading countless articles about the mercury and disease polluted waters of India and Africa, i decided to do what I can to help the less fortunate. My goal is to raise 12,000 dollars by next year to fund a water project that will create a sustainable water source for a whole community. With the 12,000 dollars the Water Project will send their employees to a specific village and either build wells or dams so their villagers will have a clean and safe water supply they can rely on.
A Drop of Hope Who does it effect? If we can raise 12,000 dollars, an entire community will have a clean water source that they can rely on. This effects these people’s health, well being, sense of security, and so much more.
Why is this important? People are dying every day from water transmitted diseases and contamination while you and I sit here and eat, bathe and drink without a second thought. It isn’t fair to let people suffer when we have all the power in the world to make a change.
How can you help? There are multiple ways to get involved. The most powerful way to help is to spread the word so we can work towards this goal as a community. The more people to join the fight, the more of a difference we can make. The second thing you can do is donate. Every dollar helps.

115 people in Africa die every hour because of diseases linked to poor sanitation, poor hygiene and contaminated water.
By mid 2011 Africa’s population was around 838 million and it’s natural rate of increase is 2.6% per year. Their rapidly increasing population is accelerating the depletion of available clean water.
The number of countries in Africa with at least 80% access to an improved water source in urban areas increased from 26% to 38% from 1990 to 2010.

Learning that respect is the ultimate test of love, and family comes before anything
arents. The only people who will truly always be there for you when no one else is, no matter what the circumstances. Everybody thinks friends are more important, but they’re not. Friends are great, but they’ll come and go. Parents are always there. My parents constantly get on my nerves, I’ll admit it. I’m not the perfect child who is always kind, sweet, and obedient towards my parents. As I get closer and closer to leaving for college, I find myself looking back on all the times I wasn’t respectful to them. The one thing I regret is not treating my parents the way they deserve to be treated after everything they’ve done and sacrificed, all for the happiness and well being of my siblings and I. I was lucky enough to grow up in a house with two parents who both made sure they did everything they could to keep me alive. They spent countless nights running into my room every five minutes just to make sure I was still breathing, taking me to the doctor’s office every time I got something as little as a scratch on the back of my right index finger, or making me four different d i n n e r s because they wanted to make sure I was liking what I was eating. For the first few years, it was mostly a series of trial and error, all until my brother was born. My parents now had a second kid, and I was quickly approaching the dreaded ‘teen years’. There was less time devoted to me alone, and I quickly realized that I actually liked being the center of attention. I was going to miss telling my friends at school the stories of my mom taking me to the doctors because I sneezed louder than I normally did. Fast forward a few years and you’ll find me at age 14 with a little brother, little sister, and absolutely no idea how to get through being a teenager. It seemed as though everyday was a “mid-life crisis” and

I didn’t know how to talk to my parents about being a teenager. I was afraid to open up to the only two people who know more about me than I know about myself, all because I accepted the idea that my parents just don’t understand what it’s like to be a teenager. Though my mom and I don’t always get along, that doesn’t mean that I don’t respect and value her presence and help. After having a deep conversation with her after a fight one day, I realized what I had been doing wrong for so many years. She told me how lucky I was to be a teenager and actually have a mother figure in my life that I could talk to about girly things, like drama and boys. Her mother lost her second fight with breast cancer and passed when my mom was just 18. The thing we tend to not realize is that our parents do absolutely everything they can for us. They work countless hours every single day, and spend astounding amounts of money for us to pursue our passions a n d dreams, all because they care. If there’s one thing that my m o m has said that’s stuck with me forever, it’s this: “Would you ever talk to your friends the way you talk to me?” Whenever I hear of somebody my age being extremely disrespectful and talking badly about their parents, I feel very bad for those parents. Cherish the time you have with your parents while you can. Kiss them in public, because it’s actually not embarrassing, and don’t believe they know nothing about being a teenager. After all, they were teenagers once too.

Exhausted, irritated, and depressed My life with an Obsessive Compulsion Disorder
BY KALI BERG Staff Writer kaliberg@waterforddrift.com
B
urning hot water rinses my hands, damaging skin cells, without me even considering that as a thought. It gets to the point where my hands get so burned I can barely feel them. I stand there waiting for the numbness to ease the pain, while my hands shake, my mind screaming for me to stop. I don’t do this because I think it’s fun, or because I have nothing better to do. I do this because it’s what my mind says I have to do. It tells me that if I don’t, something terrible will happen. After I wash my hands, I can’t touch anything. All I allow myself to do is go sit in my room. It sounds pathetic, and in all honesty it really is. Sometimes my hands get so dry causing my skin to split, and that leads to them bleeding. I was diagnosed with an Obsessive Compulsion Disorder (OCD) in 2013. My compulsion is mainly with the washing of my skin and also the repeating of certain acts (such as re-reading everything I write in fear that I wrote something bad, or checking on everything before I go to bed at night more than once). According to mayoclinic.org, “OCD often centers around themes, such as a fear of getting contaminated by germs.” To most people, this sounds stupid, and you know what? I know it is. But I can’t help it. Everyone’s mind works differently, and this is just how mine works. The past three years have only gotten worse. The one thing that really made my disorder get worse was all the stress school brought me. I was often alone, which meant my main
focus was always on my compulsion. It’s very hard to cope with an obsessive-compulsive disorder. It has gotten to the point in my life where I can’t even sit next to my siblings, or parents, without the fear of my hands being dirty or of myself being contaminated, and feeling that I need to wash my hands. For me, my OCD has caused depression because i’ve been isolating myself from the outside world. My friends have even mocked me for this problem. They think it’s a joke. But what they don’t understand is what it’s like to go home at night hating yourself because in society’s view, you are ‘pretending for sympathy’ and ‘sick’. I hate the fact that I can’t sit down next to my eight and three year old sisters and ask them about how their day was, or giving my four year old brother one of our once famous ‘dinosaur hugs’ without feeling as if my skin is contaminated with germs. Not only have people in my family made fun of me for what I go through, but I’ve also had teachers laugh at me. Teachers are suppose to be role models. Not people who bully us at school just so they can get a laugh in their day. OCD is not something anyone can control. Even with taking daily doses of medicine, it’s not something that you can make disappear. I have had this disorder for over three years, and I most likely will be stuck with it the rest of my life. If I could, I would change it. I didn’t chose to be like this, it just happened. OCD has serious effects. It messes with your mind and makes you feel as if you’re going crazy.
In my mind whille washing my hands: Common sense says..
My OCD says..
“You’re fine, stop ruining your hands.”
“Keep going, just a few more seconds. You have to.”

Q: What is the focus of your OCD? A: Organization. Everything has to be placed how I need it to be. Q: How long have you known you’ve had OCD? A: I’ve known pretty much since the beginning of highschool. Q: What sets off your OCD? A: When things are not organized, like in school I can’t focus during the lecture unless everything is the way I need it. Q: Are there times where you can control your OCD? A: I have medication for my ocd, so when I don’t take it, anything will set it off. Q: If you could describe your ocd in three words what would they be? A: Frusterating, overwhelming, and confusing.
