London attack claims three casualties, with 29 injured
An attack took place in London, UK that was the worst to happen in 12 years. The perpetrator was a 52 year old British man named Khalid Masood. The man linked to violent extremism, possibly inspired by Islamist ideology. The attack claimed three casualties: an American man and a Spanish native were killed when the attacker rammed a rental car onto the sidewalk, and an unarmed officer died after the man stabbed him while the officer stood guard.
GOP Healthcare Bill still in debate The Republican party has been in limbo on discussions over new health care bill planned to replace “Obamacare, and it is still unclear whether a vote is even going to happen. The conservative House Freedom caucus has been leading discussions on the subject, and meeting with President Donald Trump; but little progress has been made. The moderates have been meeting with President Trump, with him trying to convince them to vote for the bill. Moderates have also been meeting with House Speaker Paul Ryan, who seems to have formed a tense alliance with President Trump in order to accomplish their mutual goals.

Trump takes on the climate change conundrum
S
ea levels are rising, global temperature is rising, glaciers and arctic ice are receding, and snow cover is decreasing. Does global warming exist? Is climate change real? The 45th President of the United States is unsure. Over the past few years Donald Trump’s stance on global warming has changed and been unclear. “I don’t think it’s really an issue he cares about, so him having a concrete stance on it doesn’t really
matter” Junior Cody King said. There have been numerous and on Trump has is a “hoax”, actions to try situation”. “Well, issue in said. “but Despite s u c h of a few “claiming

expensive form of tax. I often joke that this is done for the benefit of China,” President Trump said. “Obviously, I joke. But this is done for the benefit of China, because China does not do anything to help climate change. They burn everything you could burn; they couldn’t care less.” The stance that the President has taken has left people with opposing opinions. “Global warming is occurring right now and is caused by humans” Junior Gage Percival said. “We need to get involved with stopping global warming. I’ve stopped eating meat because of how much the livestock industry contributes to C02 emissions.” Not everything Trump has said lines up with reality in relation to the Chinese. China is currently employing 35 percent more people in renewable energy than in the coal and oil industries and plans to spend more than $360 billion through 2020 on renewable energy sources. Later on Trump went on to say that he “might have” said global warming is a hoax during an interview with Bill O’Reilly. He also later denied saying “The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive” while in a debate. The current White House Chief of Staff, Reince Priebus, also said “He has his default position which, most of it is a bunch of bunk.” when asked what Trump’s stance on climate change is in November of 2016. Things continue to be convoluted because during this time Trump has stated that there is “some connectivity” with humans and climate change. In 2009 he also signed a letter with other large business owners to Obama calling for action on climate change. “We support your effort to ensure meaningful and effective measures to control climate change, an immediate challenge facing the United States and the world today.” Stated the letter. Trump has also showed resentment toward the renewable energy industry saying “To begin with, the whole push for renewable energy is being driven by the wrong motivation, the mistaken belief that global climate change is being caused by carbon emissions. If you don’t buy that — and I don’t — then what we have is really just an expensive way of making the tree-huggers feel good about themselves,”

ust as anything is disputable climate change is as well, but scientific facts are showing that man made climate change is happening and that it is causing global warming. The average temperature of the earth has risen one and a half degrees over the last century alone and is projected to keep rising. Oceans have also risen almost 7 inches across the globe in the last century which poses threats to many cities on the coast. These rising water levels are a direct result of the warming of the oceans. Warmer oceans have in turn melted glaciers and ice caps. Many places have experienced not just warmer weather but also changes in rainfall, floods, and drought. In Peru the Quelccaya ice cap is currently melting and could leave thousands without clean drinking water. These changes in climate are causing weather that happens regularly on earth but not in the regions where they are happening currently.
In 2014 the global C02 output was 9.7 gigatonnes

he most widely accepted cause of global warming and climate change is emission of greenhouse gases. Industry has grown exponentially in the last hundred years which has increased the output of carbon emissions particularly in the energy and meat industries. The burning of coal is a great way to produce energy for consumer use but it is also a main contributor to the emissions of greenhouse gases. The production of meat is also a much larger contributor to greenhouse gas emissions than one may think. To create food and land for livestock deforestation is essential which leaves more harmful gasses in the atmosphere. The livestock itself also emits large amounts of methane which is more harmful than carbon dioxide. In order to aise livestock large amounts of grain and corn must be produced as well for feed. Producing a quarter pound beef alone requires 14.6 gallons of water, 13.5 pounds of grain based feed, 64 sq. feet of land, and .126 pounds of methane. These numbers could also be higher depending on if the cattle is grass fed and which country it is in. facts courtesy of: nasa.climate.gov,The United States enviromental protection agency, skepticalscience.com

TRAPPIST-1 How the seven new planets discovered by NASA could prove to have sustainable life BY BRYCE MOJICA Sports Manager Brycemojica@waterforddrift.com
F
orty light years away NASA has discovered a new solar system similar to our own called the TRAPPIST-1 system. The size of the star that the planets orbit around called TRAPPIST-1 is only 11 percent of our sun. Currently, the planets do not have names but they go by TRAPPIST B-H. The solar system was first discovered by a group of Belgian astronomers at the University of Liège on February 22. The astronomers proceeded to name it after their favorite beer, ‘Trappist’. With our current technology it would take us roughly 11,250 years to get to the new system. One major difference NASA has already found is their orbital periods. They complete a whole revolution around their sun in around the equivalent to one earth day. Earth completes one revolution around the sun in 365 days
which is how we calculate a year. The planets also pass extremely close to each other, which leads us to conclude that they have a much stronger gravitational pull on each other compared to our own solar system. These new planets are exciting news to NASA because some of the TRAPPIST-1 planets seem to be able to support human life. It also could mean that there are other life forms currently living on the planets because of the similarities the TRAPPIST D-F planets have to earth. “The Trappist-1 planets make the search for life in the galaxy imminent,” astronomer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sara Seager said. “For the first time ever, we don’t have to speculate. We just have to wait and then make very careful observations and
see what is in the atmospheres of the Trappist planets.” If astronomers are able to find oxygen on the planets, it would point to photosynthesis occurring on the planets which would lead us to conclude that there are plants living there. Oxygen paired with methane and carbon dioxide “would tell us there is life on the planets with 99 percent confidence,” according to Michael Gillon an astronomer at the University of Liège. The TRAPPIST-1 system could prove to be a major find if there is life on it. As of now we haven’t found extraterrestrial life but with the conditions of these planets it may be the closest we have gotten so far.

I want to hold your hand again. I sit back and think about how protective you were of me. You raised me like I was your own. The way that you would shield me from the harshness of the world. To help keep me young and pure forever. You held my hand at the age of thirteen as we crossed the street because you wanted me to be safe. The warmth I felt as you grasped my childhood in your strong hand that would guide me straight. I will always remember the feeling of embarrassment that would run through me. “I’m not a baby” I’d say. “I don’t want you to hold my hand.” I would bellow, pushing your hand away. I thought I was too. Too grown for the protection you tried to provide. It’s not till after you were gone, that I would sit and think about you. And the ‘I wants’ that will always be in my heart. I want to hear your laugh again . It would fill a room like air. It warmed everyone. Its purity and honest tone was music to my ears. It was blissful. I will always hear it on a good day, a bad day, I’ll hear you utter the same three jokes, then belch out a contagious laugh that would affect everyone. To this day, It completes me. It makes me smile at how you can still warm my heart after you’re gone. I want to see you again. One more time would fill the need. You would embrace me, feeling the love being passed through from your heart to mine. Again, to this day I can remember the embrace. It was iconic. The warmth, the “I missed you”, the smell of you lotion and detergent mixed as my small child nose would catch when I would smother my face in you. I haven’t seen you since the day you were dressed up in your best suit. I remember walking up to you, thinking you looked so handsome, how the white flowers brought out the tan color of your skin. The way they did your hair and the way they placed you made it looked as if you were napping. I saw you and I could hear your laugh, feel your embrace. But as I looked at you I could feel the sadness grow. It took over me and as I looked at you I could only think one thing. “I want to hold your hand again.”
I am 5’8 150 pounds. I’m white middle class and live in the suburbs. I have a 2.93 GPA I scored a 1300 on PRE SAT.. I have 2 parents and 2 siblings. 143,000 other people share the same name as me. I’m not the strongest, the fastest or the smartest. I’m not the weakest the slowest or the dumbest. By all measures I am average. If you listen to statistic and facts I will go to college for four years and graduate with a degree in business, law or maybe engineering. I will get a decent paying job. I will hopefully marry by the time I’m 30. Maybe 35 as statistics say our generation is marrying older. Statics say I will have 1.8 children. I hope to have 1 boy and .8 girl. Fate says me my wife and our 1.8 kid will live in an averaged sized home. I will send my kids to an average school and hope they may one day rise above the meritocracy as that is the most I can hope. I am destined to be average as only a straight white male from a two parent suburban home can be. I played football for 6 years. I have not missed a practice in 5. I can count on 2 hands how many games I’ve started. I can count on 1 how many tackles I have made. I’ve taken over 7 AP and honors classes so far in high school. I have never gotten above a B+ in any one. I am the current class president and honestly there are dozens of people in our class who are more qualified than me. Who have all the measurable that say they are better than me and I am nothing more than average. I’m never going to be the biggest, the strongest, or the fastest. I will never rush for a 1000 yards. I will never be the smartest. I will never have a 4.0 GPA. i will never be valedictorian. I will never be the most popular and have dozens of dozens of friends. I will never be the most creative and create masterpieces that awe and inspire people with their beauty. I will also never be average. I plan on playing 1 more year of football and I will make every play count. I am planning on taking 4 more AP and honors classes next year, my senior year, the year I am supposed to “take off”. I am planning on acing all 4. I will run again for 1 more term and I will be the best president this class has to offer if elected. I may not be all those thing. I may not have all the measurable that say I’m not average. I am no better or worse than anyone else. I was supposed to write this paper about what I want but instead I decided to write a promise. I promise I will never be average. I promise to never sink to my mean. I promise I will do something above and beyond the statistics say I will. And on average I will not keep these promises. But I’m not average.

I want a...
I want to be happy. Growing up you get to look forward to the constant pressing questing of “what do you want to be?” When you were seven it might have been something like an astronaut or a firefighter, but as you get older and you mature you’re expected to give a more mature well thought out answer. During this time we struggle with identity and self-awareness, trying to understand and figure out who we are and what value we may have. When individuals ask me a question as complex as this all I want to say is “I want to be happy.” It wounds vague, but when it’s broken down it’s more sensible. I want a future that makes me happy, a future that I can be grateful to have every day. A career that I look forward to. I want a career that can support me, and diminishes my need to struggle, a career I can rely on. I want to be able to say I do something I love, instead of something I hate just for the sake of making a living. There are costs to making something of yourself, not everything is always easy. However, when the good outweighs the bad it’s so much more worth it. I want to be happy not just in my profession but in all aspects of life, I want more for myself than what I expect and by striving to be great and never settling for second best I hope to achieve that.

LIFE IN AMERICA
Italian foreign exchange student Giorgia Remartini voices her opinion about life in the States STORY BY GIORGIA REMARTINI Guest Writer giorgia.remartini@gmail.com
I
think being an exchange student is the hardest thing I’ve ever tried. You basically leave your country, family, friends and habits behind you for one school year in another country and only you know how many miles there are between the life you’ve built for 16 years. As soon as I got here I asked myself, “Oh man! Why did I do that? Am I crazy?”. The answer is “Yes you are the craziest person in the world”.
Happy Holidays As a Christmas gift, Giorgia and her exchange brother Dominck Witte [Germany] make donuts at Cops and Donuts in Clare City.
At first it feels like for ten months you will lose one year of life back home. But it’s not true at all. It takes a while to understand that you are the luckiest person who has a chance to discover better who you are and what you want. To be honest, the first week for me was terrible. School didn’t start until the 6th of September, although I got here almost a month before that on the tenth of August. I didn’t have friends, my English wasn’t that great, I felt so alone and dropped out of everything. However, the real problem was that I had time to think about my family and my friends back in Italy. As soon as school started I was so busy with homework, school stuff and sports that I didn’t even have time to breathe. The times were different, the school system was weird and everything else was super awkward for me, but time runs fast and pretty soon I got used to that. In the beginning I was a “half year student” (which means I decided to spend only a semester in America), but after a while I made the decision to stay here for the all year, because I’m having a great time. Now I don’t even want to call or Skype my parents because I know that I don’t have,

What cliques throughout Kettering See what staff and students see when it comes to groups and cliques around Kettering BY ANDREA ALVARADO Staff Writer andreaalvarado@waterforddrift.com
B
eing in high school there’s a lot of things you may expect, such as “cliques.” By “cliques” I mean the jocks/the pretty girls/the “cool” kids (well better know as the popular kids), the band kids, the partiers, the skaters, the kids into anime, the list goes on. We see high school movies and they make it seem like high school is just a bunch of cliques. At times it may seem that way, mostly during passing time or lunch. Just take a look around at lunch, you’ll see the “popular or cool kids” table, the band/ theater kids, the freshman, and once in awhile you’ll see people who sit alone or who go from group to group. No one truly thinks about if they’re in a clique or not, they mostly see themselves as a group of friends. But some don’t see what others see. When it comes to certain cliques, or groups at Kettering, everyone sees the kids who sit on the benches, who also are known as the “popular” kids of their graduating class. They seem like they’re very exclusive and not really open to letting new people in, but things aren’t always what they seem. Junior Anthony Fox is known as one of the popular kids who sits at the Junior bench during passing time with his friends. “Our group isn’t really exclusive at all I mean we talk to everyone and we don’t tell anyone that can’t hang out with us,” said Fox Even though Fox and his group of friends don’t seem themselves as a clique, there are others that see something different. Even some of our staff sees what other students see when it comes to this topic. “It’s just apart of high school, groups are like a comfort zone for some people and it can
be a positive or negative depending on their behavior,” said Wasilk Which is a true statement. Cliques or groups are comfort zones for some people, but there are some people that don’t belong to one clique or group. There are students that hang out or talk to others from all sorts of different groups and that are also friends with them. No one really truly belongs to a certain group, but they choose to be apart of that group. People don’t like to be stereotyped or labeled to just one group, when really it’s just
what people see constantly everyday. Looking around it seems like everyday is a repeat, you walk in and see the same people seating on the benches, the same people sitting at the same lunch tables in the morning, the same people who wait by lockers and the same people sitting by the windows. It’s the same thing everyday, no one really notices enough though to see how our lives are on a loop, everything just repeats over and over and over again. Life is too short to be doing the same thing day after day, I know you might think this has nothing to do with cliques or groups around our school but it does. The reason being is because people will get into a pattern of doing things the same way everyday and then how are they going to benefit from it? Not everyone in cliques are mean and exclusive like you would expect. However there are some that are like that, they think as if they are above everyone and that can can do whatever they want to do and treat people as if they are nothing while others are more

Not everyone is this school gets along, we all have our problems with people. Some groups try to be exclusive, but there’s always someone who’s opened to new people joining their groups. Even if they’re different it doesn’t really matter. “I’ll talk to anybody and I know in some groups there are people who are judgemental, but most of us talk to anybody,” said Fox No one in this world is perfect, it doesn’t matter who you are because we are all equals. Yeah we have our own little groups but that doesn’t mean that you can’t hang out with other people or that others can’t hang out with you and the people in your group. These groups don’t define who we are or what we are in life. We can make our own choices and our own decisions for ourselves. People may get wrapped up with the people they’re around and will sometimes lose who they are. “Don’t get confused between what people say you are and who you know you are,” -Oprah So if you see anyone being left out of just by themselves ask them to join you or just go and talk to them. igh school is a hell of a ride. Every single student in this school is in the same car, going down the same road. A typical Michigan road, full of bumps, and potholes, the occasional smooth patch here and there. This road, is called the road of self discovery. Throughout these four short years, us students are put through a lot. Every day, every month, and every year, something is changing. We lose friends, find new ones, discover new music, discover new passions, rediscover old ones. We’re all just trying our best to figure out who we are and what we are into, while constantly being pushed and encouraged to figure out what we want to do with the rest of our lives, once we walk out the doors of this school for the last time. I don’t think there is a single student in this school who would argue with me when I say that it is no walk in the park. We feel pressured and stressed constantly. It is surprisingly easy to get lost on your road to discovery and end up having no idea who you are, or what you want to do with yourself. Getting lost on the road to discovery is definitely not fun, and sometimes it can be extremely difficult to find your way back. It sucks
that we can’t just pull a map out of pockets, and follow it to exactly what path we want to take, to wherever we want to end up in life. Well here’s some good news. Now, you can. With life mapping. “Life Mapping,” is a personality analysis system that illuminates who you really are. It is created to help you bring more understanding of your character and personality traits, become more aware of your instinctive behavioural pat- terns, recognize your biggest strengths and weaknesses, and more. There’s so much more that we can discover about ourselves, with just a simple little practice. So how do you do it? There’s multiple different ways to go about the life mapping experience. One way, is to find someone to help you guide through it. With a quick search on Google, you can find different ways to contact therapists and life map experts, who can lead you through starting your own life map. Another, more easy alternative, would be to just create your own at home. The beauty of a life map, is it yours. All about you. When making your own life map, you can design it any way you want. Any design, any color, anything. So get out there, get creative, and organize your life, with a life map!

How obesity stimulates the U.S economy
BY KEVIN ELKIN Staff Writer kevinelkin@waterforddrift.com
O
besity is said to be an epidemic. Government initiatives and private organizations have gone toe to toe with the menace but have failed to make a dent. More than one third of all adults are considered obese, according to the CDC, in spite of efforts to curb this social trend. It seems as though the more effort put forth to lessen the effects of the obesity the more prevalent they become. There is a reason for this. But it isn’t what you think. Weight loss fads, the perpetual consumption of artificial foods, medical procedures and medication rely heavily on the obesity epidemic. But obesity also stimulates the opposite side of the fence. Health conscious brands are given the ability to charge more for products and services. All of this amounts to a significant portion of the American economy. These sub-industries and their greater prospective industries rely on this consumption. But it isn’t an orchestrated strategy. It is a psychological effect of sales strategies and social culture. For example, if every business is selling moldy bread and you sell mold free bread, you can charge more than if the entire market is selling mold free bread. This explains why healthy brands, such as whole foods, are able to charge more for their goods. Everyone else is selling a worse product. This culture creates tiers of quality and even luxury. Weight loss fads somewhat coincide with health conscious brands. Continuing efforts to fight obesity and fat shaming result in continued efforts put forth by people to lose weight. In January the united states spends twice as much as usual on weight loss programs and half as much as usual on fast food. In February this trend swings the opposite way. People spend half as much on weight loss and twice as much on fast foods, so the trend continues. Similarly, the consumption of artificial foods is a rather obvious effect. The more you consume the more you will want. Artificial foods are addicting and as Warren Buffet says, ”A good

business is like a strong castle with a deep moat around it.” Meaning the best business is a business with a large number of returning customers. It’s no wonder he is a major shareholder in Coca-Cola. Last, but of course not least, is increased medical costs. The united states has the highest medical costs in the world. This is in part because the united states also has the highest obesity rate. Obesity is medically expensive. Even given increased costs to eat and live a healthy life it is far cheaper than the alternative. Obesity has even given rise to an entire industry looking to accommodate laziness claiming to create a seamless experience between technology and reality. The most ridiculous example being the so called “Hoverboard”. Products like this are becoming ever more frequent and have promise of yielding significant returns. People with Obesity are also said to be 25 percent more likely to develop a form of depression in their lifetime. This comes, in part from increased fat shaming and lack of adrenaline from physical activity. Depression is by far in a way the strongest of economic stimulates. The longing to fill a void often results in consumption. Whether that be literal consumption of sustenance or the purchasing worthless stuff on Amazon. The point being people buy things they don’t need often when they are unhappy. This isn’t some conspiracy theory. I’m not saying the ruling class is ensuring people stay fat and ignorant stimulating the economy. Obesity is perpetual because of people’s faults, both which they can control and not. It just so happens that this fault supports significant portions of the economy. It’s not necessarily good, but it’s not necessarily bad. You don’t have to like it, you don’t have to accept it. The fact is the faults of man perpetuate the economy. The fortunate and unfortunate truth is man will never run out of faults.

I should I have the opportunity to have confidence and feel good in my own skin, instead of feeling ashamed or at fault for something I can't control. Logically, it makes more sense to just teach men about morals rather than encouraging women, from such a young age, that they must hide their bodies. There are some pretty terrible things people are doing around the world, but somehow we manage to focus on criticizing people on their sex life, or their style in clothing. It’s 2017, don’t you think maybe it’s time to get your priorities straight?

It is the 21st century, a women can be just as successful without a man to keep her company. We shouldn’t even care about someone else’s sex life. As long as they are old enough for consent and it is consensual both ways, a person can do whatever they please. Anyhow, we have more important things to worry about, like how someone, such as Donald Trump, managed to become our president. Women are even being advised, or warned, to not wear certain clothing just because it causes some sort of a “distraction” or an “excuse” for men to do whatever their pretty little minds desire. S
lut shaming; something we have all heard of by now. Not only is slut shaming inhumane, but it is also highly sexist. Slut shaming is a form of social stigma applied to people, mostly women, who are perceived to violate traditional expectations for sexual behaviors. Rarely do you see a man being harassed, or sexualized, over something so stupid as clothing and actions. Don’t get me wrong, men can still be harassed and assaulted, but it’s nothing compared to the amount of sexual harassment and harm women face on a daily basis. Women are frowned upon for “sleeping around”. If a woman were to meet a man at a bar and have a one night stand she would somehow become a “slut”. On the other hand, men are praised. They start playing games with their buddies to see how many women they can have sex with, and then are congratulated for each woman they sleep with. It has become so easy for us to shame the idea of women having sex regularly. News flash: humans are sexual beings. Sex is an innate part of our manifestation. It is what makes up our thoughts, our actions, our every move. Sex is involved in every aspect of our mental and physical health, whether you would like to admit it or not. The saying “a key that can open any lock is a good key, but a lock that opens to any key is a bad lock” is often used as an explanation as to why a woman, who engages in any, or sometimes even no sexual activities at all, will be branded as a slut, or looked at as if they are worth nothing. This is nowhere near being fair. A woman can be with a guy for a year, and have sex all the time with that one person, and wont be judged, but a woman who has had sex with a few men over the course of a few months is looked at as “dirty”, or in most cases, as men like to say, “looser”, which is the dumbest thing I’ve heard. Slut shaming, itself, reinforces something known as “hetero-normativity” because it relies on the very existence of sexual interaction between a man and a woman. Sex shaming a woman means you’re assuming she has sex with men, or in that matter, even wants any sort of attention from men.

H
ierarchy, inequality, and violence have always had a significant association within the human race’s society. There has always been the leaders and the followers, the rich and the poor, the males and the females, the whites and the blacks. But why does any of this matter? In today’s world we use these differences, these ridiculous differences, to justify the acts of those involved with the “higher status”. There are two main ways people tend to look at situations. The most common one being the “finger pointing” towards the victim. This is often the case when you get a woman, a person of color, someone who doesn’t have enough money to support themself, or a handicapped individual, who has become a victim of something such as
abuse, physical or mental, or even rape. When you get a woman who claims to be raped one of the first question that comes to a persons mind is “what was she wearing”? “Blaming a rape victim for not wearing ‘modest’ clothing is like blaming victims of terror for not wearing bullet proof armor”. People often blame rape victims for their rape because their clothes were a little ‘provocative’, or because they had a few drinks that evening. This is the same thing as blaming a bank for being robbed because they were open for business, which we can all agree sounds stupid to even consider thinking. No excuse is good enough to blame a victim for their rape. Women are looked at as sexual objects. Nobody looks at a woman and
see just beauty. We see seductiveness, and sexiness. We see the teasing and provocativeness “escaping” from their aurora. We automatically assume that the only thing women are looking for is sex. One in every six women has been a victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime and those between the ages of 12-34 are at the highest risk of becoming a victim of sexual violence. We were all taught from such a young age “don’t get raped”. Don’t you think it’s time to start teaching “don’t rape” and start emphasizing that no means no. It is time to start putting the blame on the individuals who commit the actual crime rather than those who endure the pain of the crime.

THE NEWS EPIDEMIC F
ake news is a story written by the media that may be misleading and misinforming the public creating a hoax. Many of these stories use non factual evidence or “alternative facts”, a phrase made popular by counselor to the president Kellyanne Conway during an interview when she defended White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer’s statement about President Trump’s inauguration attendance. While others were calling Spicer’s claims falsehoods, Conway defended Spicer’s statements and said the numbers he used in his statement were not false, but were just alternative facts. While Conway’s idea of alternative facts may seem humorous, many media sources use these so called alternative facts in their own stories. continued from page 16...

Fake News
With the evolution of 24 hour media coverage some journalists may struggle with producing the amount of news stories they need. So some of these stories have been found to use non factual evidence or alternative facts to support their claim. One of the most recent and biggest examples of this kind of reporting was back in January before president Trumps inauguration. Buzzfeed a highly known and read media source created a hoax based on a briefing that Russian intelligence had compromising information on president Trump. Buzzfeed then reported the infamous “golden shower story” of president Trumps visit in Moscow back in 2010. While Buzzfeed claimed to have gotten its intel from a credible source, president Trump immediately denied I click on Facebook to see if it’s a credible source. If it’s a credible source I read it and if I don’t trust it I click off and I don’t read it. I trust it when it’s a site that I recognize. Josie Millikan, junior
all allegations of the story and went to social media and branded it as fake news. Fake news is all around us being reported and at times it may be hard to decipher between what may be truthful and what may be fake. “Students should do their research when it comes to news they are reading. There are some sources of news known to be heavily
biased or motivated by extreme political sides— these should be avoided and considered noncredible. Students should also consider how a source is reported and attempt to analyze any false-like or non-credible claims,” language arts teacher Christopher Burlingame said.
History
Journalism and America have their histories intertwined. Modern journalism was born along with the United States. The first American publication began in 1690, Benjamin Harris’ Publick Occurences both Foreighn and Domestick, but was shut down immediately for not having a license. Many publications at the time were not at all neutral, with most stating clear opinions opposing the rule of Great Britain, while being prosecuted by those in power. 1735 saw the establishment of the legal precedent that print, even if negative, cannot be libelous if it’s true. Peter Zenger was persecuted by the British government for publishing works that spoke of the British government in an evil tone. His lawyer, Andrew Hamilton, proved the precedent and set the tone for journalism for the rest of history. The 1800’s saw the rise of mass produced newspapers. Cheap papers became popular among the working class, and those with the most sensational news became the most popular, and made the most money. With these “penny papers” also came the establishment of more prestigious publications like The New York Daily Times which focused on incorporating journalistic standards, that we still use today.
The Civil War brought the inventions of photography and the telegraph, which helped with the speed and transmission of stories. The war also brought along the formation of the Associated Press, a cooperative venture of publishers to bring stories from Europe to the U.S. The 1890’s held the rise of yellow journalism, a form of sensationalistic reporting where facts were negated or fabricated in order to produce a better selling story. Similarities can be drawn between this period and now, where various publications today choose to use “alternative facts” in order to publish stories that can be I think there’s news sources that have stood the test of time, in terms of they’ve been trusted and reliable for a long period of time and that makes them trusted and credible. sold to a greater audience. From the 1900’s until now, newspapers have been in decline, due to the appearances of radio, television, and finally the internet. Each technological advancement allowed news to be transferred more quickly and more accurately, until the present, where fake news has begun to run rampant with inaccurate information and blaring headlines.

Today
Students today are bombarded with news from various sources, be it from the internet, social media, television, radio, or print newspapers. It’s good that students receive information from various sources, but it can sometimes be hard to discern between the true and the fake. “Students should do their research when it

There are some sources of news known to be heavily biased or motivated by extreme political sides,” Burlingame said. “These should be avoided and considered non-credible. Students should also consider how a source is reported and attempt to analyze any false-like or non-credible claims.” Students can follow public sentiment to determine the trustworthiness of a source. If
a publication is widely renowned as a noncredible source, it should be avoided, or examined with extreme caution. If you doubt the credibility of an article, it is always wise to cross reference it with other publications. “I think it’s very important for people to find multiple accounts of the same information to verify it through other sources.” history teacher Mike Malley said. “I think they also have to use common sense and to be cautious about what they read and what they see.” In a survey of 140 students the number one source of news for students was found to be social media. Getting news from social media can be at times be untrustworthy. News linked to social media has been known to be misleading due to pay per click profits. News sites on social media and other free websites open to the public get their money by the number of clicks or views they get on their story, so in order to make more money and get more views some journalists may give misleading headlines or information just to intrigue the viewer. “It’s very difficult I think in today’s age to do that. I think it’s a very fine line where there is a lot of information available to students on the Internet and I teach a current issues class right
now and a lot of the students say that most of the news that they consume they they find on Twitter and other social media websites that they get directed to throughout you know other social media accounts,” Malley said. “So I recommend students try to if possible read a newspaper at least online and maybe watch some nightly national news and local news, televised news sources that present, maybe a more credible approach to the news than what they might find on Twitter. I think they also have to kind of use in some ways some to common sense and to try to not believe everything they read and to be cautious about what they read and what they see.” There is likely a tone of bias in most reporting, but the credible sources share specific facts as it relates to the issues being reported on.

Some insight as to why Betsy DeVos is unqualified for her position OLIVER DEPAUW Staff Writer oliverdepauw@waterforddrift.com

etsy DeVos is not qualified for the united states secretary of education; however, her money says otherwise. Her copious donations to various senators has provided her the high position she wrongfully deserves. With no actual qualifications to prove she is even mildly capable to do her job, paying her way in seems like a perfect option for DeVos. Providing many traits of a lobbyist, DeVos has kept charter schools within Michigan on their feet as they continue to make empty promises to students and parents alike. Having no education in her job, as ironic as it sounds, is completely true. Some things that would be considered essential to the job, such as a strong knowledge in curriculum or any understanding of it at all, are the same qualities that DeVos seemingly lacks. this woman has the power to change our education system in its entirety, and that’s exactly what she’s going to do. very “educated”. Many students at Kettering are on this program, and to some of them, it is their most healthy or only meal of the day. Taking this away could be devastating to our community, as well as many others throughout the united states. One of her statements “no lunch is free” although being true, is arrogant and uncaring. This will likely provide no benefit to our country, but instead take away what every human should have access to, a meal. This makes absolutely no sense, but then again you don’t have to worry about fixing an education system when you can just starve the sole base of the system, the students. This isn’t the first time Betsy DeVos has screwed things up without any repercussions whatsoever. Giving just about anyone the ability to open a charter school, with no regulations on how they are run. It should also be noted that 80% of these schools are operated on a “forprofit” basis. Schools should be run with the intention of educating students, not reaching

into their pockets for every last penny, and that’s exactly what Betsy DeVos has let them do. The margin between performance and profit has grown larger and larger within Michigan charter schools since DeVos has had her ever so rightfully deserved job in the education system. As if that doesn’t seem bad enough, DeVos continually breaks a staple rule, the separation of church and state. Her belief is that government funding should influence churches to be more involved in the education system. If i recall correctly, the first amendment states “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof” or in other words, SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE. Having Betsy DeVos as our secretary of education is not only going to harm the future of how schools will be, but also tear them at the seams. Choosing her for the job was a terrible decision. a uneducated decision as some might say.

Spring time health tips Spring into a new season and recover the beach body you’ve hid under those oversized sweaters all winter long! With these tips there’s no doubt you can spring back into an active and healthy lifestyle geared towards the warm weather.
1. Spring cleaning -
The start of a new season is the best excuse to do some deep cleaning. Organize your room, clear the clutter, dust the dirt and maybe even run the vacuum over your floors. And when that’s all said and done light up a candle, sit back and bask in the glory of a tidy space.
3. Change your pillows -
Have spring allergies? Consider changing out your pillows. our pillows can hold in a lot of harmful bacteria and dust mites that can lead to springtime sniffles.
5. Consider becoming a early bird - Studies have
shown that people who wake up earlier have more energy and overall feel healthier than those who sleep the day away. Wake up and watch a sunrise to start your day off on the right note. Springing the clocks forward also provides the illusion that days are longer and the possibilities are endless.
7. Keep the jacket -
As soon as the sun comes out of hiding, and the temperature climbs to 45 the sweaters come off and the shorts come on. Don’t give into spring fever just yet, the winds are still damaging even when the sun is shining.
9. Get dirty - Relive your happiest childhood memories,
run around barefoot, feel the grass between your toes and don’t be afraid to play in the dirt. The ground is filled with feel good bacteria that can actually benefit your body’s functions. Exposing yourself to these substances can help strengthen your immune system and cleanse your skin, all while fulfilling your childhood dreams of playing around in the mud.

2. Detox - Ridding your body of toxins and bacteria that
surround you during cold season is a great way to deep clean your digestive track. Now I’m not talking about a full on juice cleanse, but a few bottles of water and some fruits and vegetables throughout your day will work wonders for your body, and your mood!
4. Take a walk - Now that It’s getting warmer,
consider getting your dose of vitamin D and go for a casual stroll. It’s time to peel yourself off the couch, stretch out, and tell Netflix you’re not still watching. Spring has sprung.
6. Eat local -
This spring consider going to your nearest farmers market to purchase your groceries instead of the typical supermarket. Fresh locally grown fruits and vegetables are hormone free, full of flavor and are proven to have a better impact on your body. Plus, who doesn’t love the aesthetic a cute and quaint little market gives off?
8. Wear sunscreen -
Yes, the sun does feel amazing but after hibernating under heating blankets all winter long, our skin is more susceptible to damage. Applying lotions with SPF included can moisturize and protect your skin from the suns rays.
10. Challenge your brain - Start a new book, put
together a puzzle, play a game with friends, put your brain to work. Being mentally fit is just as important as being physically fit. While you’re strengthening your smarts, consider spring cleaning your mental health routine as well. Meditation is a good way to rid your brain and body of negative energies and absorb the good vibes the sunny season gives off.

pring is here, and winter is gone. With spring comes new sports. Student athletes have left the gymnasium after a cold winter to play outdoor sports in a season that brings warmth. Spring sports include baseball, softball, boys golf, girls soccer, girls varsity tennis, boys/girls track and field, and boys/girls lacrosse. Most spring sports run from the beginning of April till the end of May. Those seniors that excel in track may find themselves competing even after school is out.

Waterford Kettering’s softball team is known to be successful. With the start of the 2017 season, there are eight seniors on the team. Notable senior players worthy of mentioning include Madison French, a Bowling Green State University commit and senior Sarah Amenson. A winning attitude “I enjoy being a senior on the softball team because I see myself as a mentor to the lower classmen on the team and I try to inspire them to do well.”
Hoping for the best “I don’t think Kettering will be the best at golf this year. It is hard for us because we lost a lot of talent from last season. My favorite part about being on the golf team is being able to play a variety of courses and play nine holes for free everyday.” Austin Tiernan, 12

hardships throughout the season. For one, Dooley was the only senior on the team. “It is rare for a varsity basketball team to only have one senior,” Dooley said. Despite being the only senior, Dooley still bonded well with the team. ”My senior basketball season was very memorable. As far as the regular season goes, I would say we didn’t accomplish a lot of the goals that we set,” Dooley said. Although it was not the most successful season, Dooley still had a good time on the team and had lots of fun with his teammates.

From bowling Folk has learned how to balance his school life with bowling. After Folk graduates he plans to attend Lawrence Tech and be on their bowling team. Although Schoof had an unfortunate ending to basketball at Kettering, she still has a bright future ahead of her. She has committed to play basketball at Saginaw Valley University.

For some, including senior Sinclair Sahajdack, high school brings on the good byes. “I am done with bowling after I graduate mainly because the school I’m going to doesn’t offer it but I might do a league just for fun,” Sahajdack said. Sahajdack plans to attend Northern Michigan University in the fall, where she will have to give up bowling competitively. “Even though I hated it at the time my favorite part about bowling was the amount of time I spent at the bowling alley with my team,” Sahajdack said.

Griffith, a four year returning athlete on the varsity competitive cheer team, saw much improvement. Griffiths favorite part about being on the competitive cheer had a lot to do with working hard with the team. “Working with my team and not for my coaches just doing what was best for us and doing what we could do not what everyone else was doing,” Griffith said. Griffith plans to not pursue her cheerleading career after high school, so like many she will be saying goodbye to the sport. “I’m not going to college anywhere that has a cheer program but I’’m doing spirit cheer which is a summer camp and I will get paid to cheer and that’s really exciting,” Griffith said.
Brandon Egres
enior Brandon Egres reflects on his senior year of wrestling and looks back at what he accomplished. “As a senior I accomplished a lot, I did not expect to do as well as I did this season. I put a lot of hard work in and it paid off by going to states for wrestling,” Egres said. He competed in the state tournament at The Palace of Auburn Hills. This is a very big accomplishment and something that Egres will remember for probably the rest of his life. After high school Egres plans to go to Oakland University or Central but he did receive an offer from Alma for wrestling and that is under consideration as well.

GET IN THE GAME A
ttention Kettering athletes: If you’re reading this you may be able to play sports at the next level. The world of college sports is a world that has been explored only merely by our own, which has caused many of our capable athletes to hang up the uniform after high school. Know that it’s possible, and that participating in the world of college sports can be a reality. It starts with knowing what’s out there. There are Four main divisions: National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
DIVISION I
Division I is what you hear about the most, and is the most popular. The University of Michigan and Michigan State University, along with schools such as Western Michigan, Central Michigan, and Eastern Michigan, are the popular Division I in our state. (Schools such as Oakland University and University of Detroit also feature some Division I sports) Many athletes dream of going to these schools on a full ride athletic scholarship under the bright lights, however D1 is for a select few. Division I is for athletes who are among the elite of the country. This is easily the most competitive and popular among the four, which means NCAA DI is raking in a ton of money. Because of these things, DI athletics is not impossible, but challenging to get into. If you want to play Division I athletics you have to bring it every day to sport. Intense training programs, diligent food and nutrition plans, and an honest commitment to your sport.
Division I STATS
173,500 student athletes 51 percent of division I athletes receive some level of athletic aid 2012 graduation success rate: 81 percent
Division II STATS
109.010 student athletes 56 percent of division II athletes receive some level of athletic aid 2012 academic success rate: 71 percent
DIVISION II
Division II athletics much more seldomly heard of than Division I, however DII athletics are still very athletics and most give out athletic scholarships just like Division I. Division II schools around Waterford can be found in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). These schools include Saginaw Valley State, Grand Valley State, Wayne State, Northern Michigan, among many others. Often times high school athletes get caught up in feeling like they must go Division II. However when this happens, athletes often times miss the plentiful opportunities that Division II has to offer. Division II is full of scholarships, quality education, experienced and knowledgeable coaching, state of the arc equipment and facilities, and many other things that can make the division 2 experience a good one. However with these benefits, comes the competitiveness of Division 2 athletics. While it is not as competitive as D1, you are still competing against other athletes of your class all across the country for athletic scholarship and spots on athletic teams. It is still necessary to work hard and attempt to excel as much as possible in your sport, but reaching out is arguably just as important. There are camps that will invite those they have noticed, but signing up for camps can be a very good way to get noticed. Another good way to get noticed is by reaching out directly to the coach of whatever school you’re looking at. You can do this by either checking your sports athletic page, and hopefully finding a recruit questionnaire. If you’ve got the ability to play

at the next level, this or directly emailing a coach of your sport can be a very good way to get an email or a phone call back. Once you get either of those things, you can get the ball rolling begin to set up visits, and potentially get an athletic scholarship offer.
DIVISION III
NCAA Division III athletics. The division 3 schools that are popular around here include Albion, Adrian, Alma, among many others in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. To many the simple title makes high school athletes not consider a school in this division, regardless of how good of a fit it could just be. Yes it is true, Division III athletics cannot offer athletic scholarships. It is illegal. But for those who look into it, division 3 can be a great option and level to continue to play sports. Often times Division III schools are private, which often means quite expensive. However, if you have good grades, a good attitude, and you are believed to be a good fit at a D3 school, coaches and admissions representatives will often find ways to make scholarships and loans available to make college for affordable. Getting noticed and recruited at this level is also the easiest, given the fact that it is for the most part the least competitive. Contacting a coach is the first step, where from there you will be asked to apply to the school, in hope that you get accepted so you can enroll and become a part of the school and athletic program. Also, if you are bummed about the fact you won’t get to have a scholarship signing day, you can now be involved in the festivities. The

NCAA released a type of stationery that can be used so that athletes can celebrate their signing day in an appropriate fashion. Division III is full of the same perks that you can get at other levels, don’t let pride or what others say deter you from joining Division III.
NAIA
The most unknown of the four, the NAIA is great way to continue college athletics and possibly receive an athletic scholarship. Over 90 percent of schools in the NAIA offer athletic scholarships, so if you have the ability and know-how, you can make yourself a candidate for this money off school. Schools in the NAIA schools around here include Aquinas, Concordia Ann Arbor, Cornerstone, and many others in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference. The NAIA is very competitive, and just like NCAA athletics it is a privilege to be a part of. The NAIA is considered the least competitive out of all levels that can give out athletic scholarships. This means that if athletic scholarships is a goal of yours, the NAIA is a perfect place to start. Many schools in the NAIA have top of the line coaching, a good education, and a overall good environment to be in and compete in for four years. At the end of the day, you need to go out and get what you want in this competitive world of sports. You have to work hard to improve your skills, but also work hard to get known by coaches. Getting started is the hardest part, but once you do that, the light at the end of the tunnel can clear up and reveal a world of opportunity and athletic scholarships.
