Trump elected president
November 8th was election day in the US, and the new president was decided. President elect Trump will take office on January 20th, 2017. His election has caused tremors around the world, both good and bad. The U.S. economy has fluctuated dramatically, but remained relatively stable. Various world leaders have pledged to work with Trump, including Russian President Vladimir Putin.
U.S Coalition fighting ISIS for Mosul Mosul, a city in northern Iraq, has been under ISIS occupation since 2014. An Iraqi coalition, led by US soldiers, has been pushing the ISIS forces relentlessly for the past month in order to recapture the city. Mosul is said to be the last remaining stronghold for ISIS militants.

Not your average moon November 14 was the brightest moon there has been in the past 68 years. This super-moon was a result of a full moon coinciding with the closest approach to Earth. The Moon’s orbit around the Earth is egg shaped and irregular, causing it to be at different distances away from the Earth at different times of year.
Reopening rolladium The Rolladium Family Fun center is finally reopening. After being part of the community for 60 years, it closed down shortly for renovations, including a 5,000 square foot expansion, and a raised ceiling over the snack bar. The Rolladium is located at 4475 Highland road.

The worth of your work The science department’s new grading change is affecting students greatly BY OLIVER DEPAUW Staff Writer oliverdepauw@waterforddrift.vom
W
hen student’s grades are solely based upon tests, it limits those students who need homework in order to obtain a good grade. Within the science department, tests are worth almost all of a student’s overall grade, which in some cases can be helpful. However, it can also destroy their chances of passing. In the past, the standard grading system was 25 percent practice opportunities and 75 percent tests and quizzes. The new system (as of September 6th 2016) is stated in the syllabus as “standard-based grading”. “At its core, standards-based grading is a system where teachers report scores based on a student’s academic achievement in relation to the state standards. The purpose is to increase student achievement by clearly communicating a student’s progress toward learning outcomes in a timely, accurate, fair, and specific manner. Standards-Based grading provides time for students to practice concepts and make
mistakes by only grading the achievement category after a student has had time to master a concept; it values effort and attitude but reports a student’s achievement toward standards only; a student is given multiple opportunities to demonstrate proficiency toward a standard in any given grading period” It is also stated that practice opportunities will receive no points in the gradebook. This means that while practice opportunities technically have a point value, they are not entered into the gradebook with said value; thus creating a contradiction between the two statements. With this implemented, students are required to do good on their tests in order to pass the
course. Students who don’t feel the need to do their homework view this new rule as a great change, as the homework cannot bring their grade down. This is helpful because it reduces the outside of class work and they can still achieve the high grades they desire. “I think it’s pretty sweet because, I feel like homework is just extra work, and that if I’m studying and I know the material then I can do good enough on tests to keep my grade where I want it,” senior Dom Mara said. For students who tend to do well on tests or standards as the science department says, the system works great, as there is little to no homework needed
to be done in order to pass with ease. Alternatively, it is unfair to those students who need homework in order to strive in their classes. With no point value given, Students grade ultimately depends on their ability to pass a test, which can be problem for many students, as test taking is a skill that is necessary for this new department change. When homework has no point value, students are not forced to complete the work, which is a fundamental piece to understanding the material in order to do well in the class. With no homework requirements or any incentive in order to actually do the work, students are putting their grade on the line to test whether they fail or pass. “I believe that it is harmful since the homework is optional, most students make the choice not to do it, and that doesn’t prepare them for any tests.” sophomore Olivia Schutt said. The new grading system can be both good and bad for the students of kettering, and its up to the tests to decide.

S
tudents at Kettering are upset about the new enforcement on parking passes. Parking passes have been around for a good amount of time, but have never really been enforced well until this year. In October, all of the cars that did not have parking passes were tagged with orange parking violation stickers. The sticker informed on what you were violating, in most cases there was just a box checked that said no valid parking permit. The parking pass warnings do not say what further action will be taken if a parking pass is not purchased. After you get multiple parking warnings you are potentially at risk for a couple things. “Depending on the administrative decision, you can be suspended, lose driving privileges for a week or even up to a year if you do not have a parking pass” Rick Helm, the parking lot attendant said. According to Helm, there are certain requirements that students must meet in order to be able to park in the parking lot. To have a parking pass you need to have at least twelve credits, become a junior, and you have to have your registration, proof of insurance, and a license.

Many sophomores start driving in the second half of the year but technically they cannot park in the student lot even though there are many available spots. “We have to make enough parking spots for not only students and staff but our parking lot is also designed for visitor parking so we have to accommodate for visitors too,” Helm said. Many students still are choosing not to purchase the 50 dollar parking pass. “It is a policy from the district, in secondary schools it is not uncommon to have some sort of a parking pass. We are actually one of the lowest priced,” Principal Frankowiak explains. Out of many school districts in Oakland County, Kettering actually has one of the lowest parking prices. “I think the price is right and is a fair amount, I would pay for one if they actually maintained the parking lot well,” junior Taylor Atherton said. These are several reasons students don’t purchase parking passes. “In the winter there is three row parking because the parking lot is not plowed, and by the back entrance it is ridiculous how the pavement is all torn up and you could bottom

There are several students who have had their cars blocked in because of three row parking. “Unfortunately you are not going to have salt out there all the time, there are different standards, when it gets over 1.5 inches of snow, that’s when the plows roll,” Frankowiak said. That is why the parking lot is not always plowed, there has to be a certain amount of snow in order for the plows to come. The big question students want to know is where is the money going that they are paying and if it is being used to improve the parking lot. “The money goes to the district who pays for the lining of the parking lot and plowing in the winter,” Helm said. It is not Kettering who chooses what the money is used for it is the district’s choice. According to Frankowiak it is possible that our parking lot will be resurfaced the summer of 2017 and the price of parking passes will not go up they will remain the same. There are plans to fix up the parking lot.

Moving to Mars Some challenges that will be faced on the way to Mars
W
e choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills…” John F. Kennedy, September 12, 1962. Spoken years ago, at the birth of our planet’s first space race, Kennedy told humanity that we would make it to the moon before the end of the decade, before we had even invented wheeled luggage. The public thought he was crazy, as did most scientists. However, through the world’s top scientists and a little bit of American ingenuity, on July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins took humanity’s first steps on a celestial body other than the moon. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has hopped on the same path, and is planning to take us with him. With his private company SpaceX already selling rockets to NASA for resupplying the International Space Station, his plan for lowering the price for getting into orbit is already in effect. This is the first step onto the path to Mars. As more objects are launched into orbit, the price to get them there lessens. As more objects are in orbit, the need to resupply and maintain these satellites grow, increasing the need for rockets, produced by companies like SpaceX, and its competitor, Boeing, with their CEO Dennis Muilenburg. With the cheapening of space flight completed, Musk, Muilenburg, and other businessmen that are driving the race forward will confront the next challenge: humans in deep space. Never has man left the confines of Earth’s magnetic field, so we do not yet know all of the challenges we will face in the six month journey to the red planet, but we can prepare for the worst. The tallest hurdle mankind looking at is the lack of gravity, and its effect on human physiology over longer periods of time. Once humans land on Mars, most of the work they’ll be doing would be manual labor. After six months of zero g’s, bones are turned to brittle sticks, if not properly exercised. Transports traveling to and

from Mars will require large quantities of exercise equipment, taking up valuable space and weight. This isn’t the only health hazard. Deep space is chock full of radiation, and radiation turns humans into bags of cancer. The best way to fight this is not yet invented. One of the best materials for reflecting radiation is the plastic polymer polyethylene. Polyethylene is a very common material humans use in their everyday lives, it’s even the same material that most garbage bags are made out of. It may sound ridiculous, but humans could be going to Mars in a spaceship made out of garbage bags. Mars, unlike earth, has a very thin atmosphere surrounding it,only one percent the size of the Earth's at sea level. The gases that it is composed of are also completely different. With very little atmosphere, and no ozone layer, the radiation levels on Mars are five times greater than that of earth's. Another challenge from this is that Mars’ temperature at the surface of the planet is negative 63 degrees Celsius, way too cold for human life. One highly debated solution for this is the use of greenhouse gasses on Mars. Greenhouse gasses are one of the main contributors of climate change, and to increase the global temperature of Mars, they must find ways to trap more heat from the sun in the planet's atmosphere. Possible solutions to create the greenhouse gasses are mining minerals containing the proper elements, and running chemical reactions to let the greenhouse gas escape into the atmosphere, further thickening and raising the temperature of the atmosphere bring man one step closer to terraforming Mars. Mars is a necessity for humanity to continue. With a population of 7.5 billion, humans are using an extreme amount of resources, and that amount is increasing every year. Though widely debated, scientific evidence backs the fact that humanity is quickly burning through this planet. If humans have any desire to exist past the year 2100, they will realize that they need new worlds to expand onto, because this one has just about had it.
The Falcon Heavy: With the need to carry cargo weighing up to 125 metric tons between Earth and Mars SpaceX has developed the Big Falcon Rocket series. The BFR Heavy would mainly be used to transport necessary resources to Mars.

Vaping Clouds A look at how students use vaporizers for a variety of reasons
A
growing phenomenon, with the soul idea for a healthier alternative to consume tobacco products. Vaping. It was originally made to help smokers consume nicotine in a healthier way. Nicotine is a compound found in tobacco products that is a contributor to the deaths of over 480,000 people in the U.S.A. alone according to the CDC. Considering most E-liquids have nicotine, which is highly addictive, which could lead to many students abusing vaporizers. “I vape because I like to do tricks with my friends,” Mike Richards said. “I can do an ‘O;, I can do a jellyfish, I can aim my ‘O”’s, I can blow an ‘O’ through another ‘ O ’ , I can do a ‘tornado’, I can do a ‘ghost’, I can do a ‘french inhale’, and that’s about it, but there is a lot more tricks.” Most would say that practice leads to perfection. In order to perform a lot of tricks, one may have to vape often, in order to be able to do so. “I vape anywhere up to three times a month,” Mike Richards said. Although vaping three times a month does not seem like much, the numbers still add up quickly. When asked whether Mike Richards knows if vape is vapor or smoke, the Richards took a minute to think and looked puzzled by what was being asked. “That is a good question,” Mike Richard said. The fact that there is a student that doesn’t truly know what they are inhaling three times each month and onward up to 36 times a year may scare some. However, this doesn’t apply to every person who uses vaporizers. Many are aware of the problems it has been theorized to produce, for instance,

Spencer Watkins. “I’m sure one day they will come out and say ‘Vaping is harmful,’ but I’d say vaping is definitely the most un-harmful way to smoke, because most people don’t even take it into their lungs, and there isn’t tobacco. It is mostly just additives and E-juice,” Spencer Watkins said. Considering the legal age to purchase tobacco products is 18, there is some concern as to how minors obtain possession of vapes and vape appliances. “A lot of stores won’t card you if you have a vape and are buying juice especially if you already have a vape in your hand,” Spencer Watkins said. “I got into v a p i n g because my friend had a vape and I had enjoyed the nicotine buzz it gave me.” The problem many have with minors possessing vapes is the possibility to become addicted to it’s nicotine, although, it is important to know that not all E-liquid contains nicotine. “Nicotine is definitely addictive,” Spencer Watkins said. “It’s very hard to quit products that have nicotine in them.” Considering the awful effects that nicotine has on the body, many vape users have switched to E-liquids that do not contain nicotine. “You can purchase juices without any nicotine so you can avoid addiction, it just depends on the type of juice,” Sherry Cobbler said. Factual evidence depicting the health risk of vaping is still being discovered, as vaping is generally a new fad. Although there are still many questions being asked about vape, it is still fact that nicotine and additives in E-liquid are not good for your body.

As Kettering approaches the 2016 - 2017 winter sports season Kettering will be with one less sport as there is no Waterford United hockey team. The boys basketball team also brought in a new head coach while the football team lost theirs. Shawn Warner former head coach of the Waterford Kettering football team resigned after a 3-6 season. The administration is now looking for a coach to fill the void he left. The girls basketball team on the other hand looks to continue their playoff streak, with another year of success.

R
eady, set, hike!! It’s the fourth quarter there's only thirty seconds on the clock, the score is all tied up just need one more touchdown to win. You hear students shouting “I believe that we will win, I believe that we will win, I believe that we will win,” He's going, going, going he's gone!! Touchdown Captains!!!! Everyone is cheering and the players are celebrating. Before these teen football players got here they were at the bottom and pushed their way to the top. For example these three middle schoolers from the Corsairs Little League Football and Cheer are doing. This organization has been going on for a little over fifty years and the ages range from five to thirteen years old. These boys eat,sleep and breathe football and the majority of them plan to continue playing in high school. The Corsairs have this saying “Once a Corsair always a Corsair” but in this case these Corsair boys are soon to be Captains. Zane Grant seventh grade, Nate Gregart eighth grade, and Jack Wilson eighth grade, all plan on being a Kettering Captain. These three driven boys are all ready for what comes with being a high school football player and for the hardship and competitiveness that come along with it. “I think high school is going to be harder and more competitive than little league is,” Wilson said. Wilson along with teammate Gregart has played for six years now and will be freshmen next year. But Grant is not that far behind them, he has played for the Corsairs for five years now and even after his injury last year he still is planning to play throughout his high school years. These boys also share the same loving memory of their first touchdown and it helped motivate them and push them to be as talented as they are. However these middle schoolers weren't the only ones that have turned from Corasir to Captain. Junior Matt Edin, along with Seniors Brandon Atkins and Chuck Walker, were also in the same position and they knew exactly what they are going through.

“All you got to do is do your best and just keep your head up,” Walker said. Edin, Atkins, and Walker all know how hard it was going from little league to playing with the big boys. “You just need to work hard and make bonds with your teammates on and off the field,” Edin said. Like Grant, Edin was also injured and was unable to play his freshman year. However after he recovered he jumped right back into playin again. But winning and being competitive isn’t the only important thing, it’s also the little things that come along with it. “I just love the atmosphere from the students in the student section at every game,” Atkins said. Also sometimes there’s little perks of being on the football team I mean not all the time but, sometimes. “I guess you could say one of the best parts of football is the fans and the girls but also just being with my friends,” Walker said. So when you think of football don’t just think of winning, competition, or who’s better than who but, about the little things and the hard work that these boys have gone through to get from the bottom to the top. Even though their ages may be different, their passion, heart and love for football is all the same. So from “Once a Corsair always a Corsair,” to “It’s a great day to be a Captain,”

These students also partake in activities that are largely frowned upon due to the legal repercussions. These teens may be a surprise to some since they value academics highly. When most people think of students who are labeled as “academics”, those who do well in school, and are in AP or honors classes, they probably don’t associate partier as an adjective to describe them. Shannon Jakes* is a high achieving student who is involved at school but also enjoys the party scene. “I think it’s different because I’m not really qualified as a ‘party person’ I’m more like Hannah Montana,” Jakes said. “That’s what I tell people because I’m in every school club, but then I party every single weekend, or I’m at a rave or concert.” Students who haven’t experienced a party may not know what to expect. This leads to misconceptions about what actually happens at parties and what types of people participate. “Parties get a bad reputation, some people go to get messed up but myself and many others go just to have a good time, make memories and meet new people.” Jakes said. “I think you should go to a party if you want to dance or meet people, not just to get messed up.” Unlike most, Jakes doesn’t think about the substances involved at parties, such as drugs and alcohol, as a priority, instead she looks forward to the experience. “I don’t go to get wasted or messed up, I go to socialize,” Jakes said.” And even though plenty of people are doing that, it’s not what the party really is.” Her carefree attitude which is alive on the weekends conflicts with many responsibilities she has throughout the week. Jakes sometimes finds herself questioning her actions. “I go through phases where I’m like ‘Why do I do this?’, I’ve even sat down at a party and I was like ‘Why are we here?’,” Jakes said. “We’re disappointing our parents, we could be studying, we could be doing better things’.” Another concept which frustrates Jakes about the party atmosphere is the thought of being taken advantage of in a sexual way. “If I sense that I’m like not okay I don’t allow myself to go near boys because I don’t want to be harmed.” Jakes said. “I want everyone to know that they shouldn’t feel pressured to do anything they may be uncomfortable with whether they’re under the influence or not.” Jakes isn’t the ‘hook up’ type. She doesn’t value last minute interactions and is appalled by the idea. “If I’m getting drunk or high or whatever I’m doing it’s because I just want to be goofy and fun not because I’m trying to hook up with someone,” Jakes said.
THE LONE WOLF
Seth Johnson* is the academic scholar that is critical of how he’s spending his time and whom he’s spending it with. He’s not willing to deal with stupidity and doesn’t have time for things he’s uninterested in. After being exposed to two parties, Johnson has realized he’s not a fan. “It’s not like the parties you see in movies that are like college parties,” Johnson said. “It’s a bunch of kids who have crappy stuff and they drink themselves to throwing up and that’s where it starts to be not fun anymore.” Johnson finds merit in remembering his night he’s had, and enjoying it at the same time. Also he isn’t that interested in alcohol to begin with. “I don’t really partake in drinking alcohol because that really does mess up your body,” Johnson said. In his opinion, marijuana isn’t as harmful to a person’s body than alcohol. Johnson is aware marijuana is illegal, and can get him in some serious trouble although he continues to do it somewhat frequently because the rewards are worth the risk. “I mean with all the knowledge out there about certain things, it’s [smoking weed] really not that big of a deal anymore,” Johnson said. “It’s just the government is so far behind in what they’re doing.”

Movies and books often portray teens that are sly dishonest people who go behind their parents backs in order to party. Though just as everything that’s on the Internet isn’t true, neither is everything on the silver screen. Some teens are able to be open with their parents about the types of social activities they are involved in. “My parents were partiers too, they understand but they also care about my safety and me getting an MIP [Minor in Possession],” Holden Bryce* said. MIP’s are given out to under age people that are found to be harboring alcohol or other illicit materials regardless of if the have consumed any. The risk of partying and drinking may be high but it’s worth it in the eyes of Bryce, despite past experiences. “I like to drink because it makes me happy and I’m just enjoying myself,” Bryce said. “I look at it like what if I died tomorrow and didn’t do anything.” Many students that attend parties are also responsible and may not be the stereotypical high school-dropout esque character portrayed in movies. “ I don’t think those that are partying are people who don’t care about their life, it’s just people who are having fun with it,” Bryce said.

While drinking and smoking may seem harmless in the moment to some high schoolers on the outside, the effects of it can be dangerous. According to the Federal Trade Commission [FTC] , 43 percent of underage [below 21] emergency departments visits are due to drug or alcohol abuse. Of these visits, they averaged a stay of about 5 days and the mean cost was 19,200 dollars per stay. Not all situations could lead to hospitalized visits or dangers; however, it’s important to be aware of what could happen. The FTC mentioned that other statistics and studies have found that teen marijuana use and alcohol consumption could lead to brain development problems and cognitive impairment. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC] defines binge drinking for females as consuming four or more drinks in one sitting and for males is consuming five or more drinks in one sitting. In a survey by the Harvard School of Public Health it found that 44 percent of college students are binge drinkers and 74 percent say they binged in high school. It is also confirmed by the CDC that 90 percent of alcohol consumed by teens is through binging. The effects of binge drinking has also been associated with a large amount of health problems such as, heart disease, stroke, cancer, liver disease, STDs, and alcohol poisoning. As far as marijuana is concerned, the American Psychological Association [APA] says in the short term there has been correlation between heavy marijuana use in adolescence and negative results. According to the APA there is evidence that shows that heavy marijuana use in adolescence can be shown to impair functions such as attention, memory, poor school performance, higher dropout rates and greater unemployment rates. Lastly, the APA stated that in comparison to nonusers the smokers had “changes in the shape, volume and gray matter density of two brain regions associated with addiction.” Along with these facts, if you or someone you know has a substance abuse problem, there are several things you can do. First, you can seek a counselor’s advice. If you are not comfortable talking to a counselor, you can call Oakland Family Services at (248) 858-7766 or Narcotics Anonymous at (248) 543-7200.

he dreaded, long, harsh winters of Michigan have arrived. The snow can be nice at first until it’s March and still negative 20 degrees outside. All winter long people are getting sick, feeling sluggish, and making it super easy to curl up in their blankets instead of staying in shape. Most people would rather stay in bed, watch movies and have that seventh Christmas cookie that work out. Put the Christmas cookie down, and get back out there. Here are some do’s and don’ts to get you through the dreaded winter season.

• Go to class with a friend: It can be difficult to be super self-motivated when it’s cold and snowy. If you make plans with a friend to take a yoga class or go workout you can push each other and you’ll be less likely to cancel on them. • Carry a water bottle: Water is the cure to almost anything. It increases energy, promotes weight loss and it’s even a natural headache remedy. Bottom line if you aren’t feeling well drinking a lot of water is a good way to help yourself. • Carry hand sanitizer: Germs are spread very easily especially in school. So if you’re working in the computer lab, it’s a great idea to put on some hand sanitizer when you’re done. If you don’t want to buy one a lot of classrooms have hand sanitizer available. Take advantage of that. • Get your eight hours: During the winter season, you can do everything to stay healthy but if your body isn’t fully rested you won’t be able to utilize it in the correct way. Don’t watch that 12th episode. Turn off the TV and go to bed. It’s one of the best things for you. It’s the cherry on top. Just sleep. • Oats: Oatmeal is much more than just a convenient breakfast food; it also provides nutrients that are essential during winter. Oatmeal is high in zinc (important for proper immune function) and soluble fiber (associated with heart health). Although instant oatmeal is more convenient, it is a bit more expensive. To eat healthy on a budget, go with oldfashioned oats.
• Eat too much comfort food: When transitioning from fall to winter it’s typical to swap some of your fruits and veggies for your comfort foods. It’s not that you love the healthy stuff any less but sometimes you just don’t want a cold salad when it’s already cold out. It’s super important to keep your awesome summer eating habits through the winter. • Skip your workouts: When it gets cold and gross outside its so much easier to say I’ll just work out tomorrow when it’s not snowing but, we live in Michigan and winter just doesn’t go that easy on us. So you have to just buckle down and go. You’ll feel so much better after you get a good workout in. • Touch your face: Getting sick in winter is a lot easier but a good way to help from spreading germs is to try not to touch your face. When germs are all over your hands and you touch your face it makes you a lot more likely to come down with something. • Forget to moisturize: No matter how much you avoid hot showers, dry, itchy skin is a given if you dont moisturize. Between the icy conditions outside, desert-like air inside, and requisite hand-washing to ward off germs, your skin is under attack from damaging, drying elements throughout the winter. Find a product that you like and apply often to damp skin after showering, washing your hands, and using hand sanitizer. • Skip sunscreen: If you’re a person who loves to be outside in the winter that’s awesome. Beware the sun still. The bright snow actually amplifies the harmful effects of the sun. Being outside is awesome for you just make sure you’re extra careful with your skin.

The state of New York recently lifted their tax on menstruation products by the help of governor Andrew Cuomo, who signed a legislation that banned the “tampon tax”. Activists and women alike hope this action will open the eyes of other states around the country to get rid of the sexist law. “This is a regressive tax on essential products that women have had to pay for far too long and lifting it is a matter of social and economic justice,” Cuomo said. This historic step forward has been a big win for the freeing of products for women in New York, but now women across the country are ready for change in their own states. Petitions and protests have been held in cities like St. Louis, Washington D.C., and Portland to encourage other state governments to follow in the steps of Governor Cuomo. The movement has been formally named “Free the Tampons” and has embodied women’s concerns of products being accessible in public places and the fear of an unexpected start of a period. The movement aims to break down the barriers that surround the discussion of periods, eliminate the horror stories that come with them, and rid our country of the unequitable law that is the “tampon tax”. An easily accessible tampon or pad could change a girl’s view on being a woman and save them from the humiliation that tends to follow, and that is the goal of dissolving “the tampon tax” will do for women across the country.

Women of all ages have been in the same situations and are forced to go without feminine products because they are deemed “unnecessary” by the government and not offered within public facilities. Females across the country in schools, homeless shelters, and prisons have no other choice to improvise in scary situations. Across America, 39.7 percent of the homeless are women and they faced with the decision of being hungry or feeling clean. Considering the average box of tampons cost five dollars, they often resort to using things such as socks or rags which can result in infections and major health issues. The choice between a meal or being healthy shouldn’t have to be made for any woman. With the country’s tax code, each state taxes “tangible personal property” but make exception for ”necessities”, which include things like groceries, food stamp purchases, medical purchases, clothes (in some states),and agricultural supplies, but NOT feminine hygiene products. We cannot just cross our legs and hold in our period, we are forced to buy feminine hygiene products, and without a product, women are prone to infections and not to mention humiliation. rap, where are my keys?! “Mom, have you seen my hoodie?” “Does anyone know where I set my phone?” “Oh no. I completely forgot.” These are just a few of my lovely catch phrases that I say, and have been saying, for many years. I am constantly losing things unless they’re connected to my body, and I forget things seconds after they are told to me. My mother liked to call me a “ding dong” for the longest time, because of these foolish traits I have. Every time I lost something I had misplaced for the gazillionth time, or I was reminded of something that had gone in one ear and out the other, she would just shake her head at me and laugh, and so would everyone else. It’s just the way I was; I was a ding dong. We dealt with it by finding humor in it. As I got older and my responsibilities grew, being a ding dong was no longer funny to me. No longer was it simply affecting small everyday tasks, but it was affecting my grades. The lack of memory and attention I had became extremely concerning, and frustrating. I could never remember what homework I had to do, or how to do it. I could study for hours on end, go to take the test, and have absolutely no clue how to answer a single question. I would sit there in disbelief at the fact that I had spent endless hours practicing and studying this topic, and now that it matters, my mind was completely blank. Looking at my peers around me acing tests with no problem, doing extra curricular activities, and maintaining steady GPA’s killed me. I never understood how I was doing the exact same amount of work as them, and yet my grades were constantly slipping, while everyone else had A’s. The constant lectures of my parents telling me “I
was smarter than this” and I needed to “stop being so careless and lazy,” started to get very old, and lead me to feel extremely insecure. Trying as hard as I could and never seeing any results began to not only frustrate me, but change my perspective on myself. I came to the conclusion that I really just wasn’t as smart as I thought I was. It wasn’t until just a month or so ago, that I realized the reality of my “stupidity.” I am most certainly not stupid. I have ADHD, and I was going through almost the exact same struggles that an insane amount of women with ADHD experience as well. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, (aka ADHD) is an extremely common, chronic condition. Up to eleven percent of children aged 4-17 have been diagnosed with ADHD in some point of their lives. The most concerning part of this fact, are the words “in some point of their lives.” While the male gender is constantly being diagnosed with ADHD no problem, the female gender has a much harder time. Boys are almost three times more likely to have been diagnosed with ADHD than girls and adults who were not diagnosed in their childhood, who are very likely to remain undiagnosed throughout the rest of their lives. Women with ADHD tend to respond to the condition in different ways compared to men. Us females typically have a more inattentive response to the condition. We have symptoms like disorganization and forgetfulness, that are much harder to recognize, and understand. Males however, have the more obvious symptoms, like hyperactivity, and rebellious actions. People assume women with ADHD are just stupid or careless because of their actions, while people can obviously tell that something is wrong with males, because their actions are much more
noticeable. The unfamiliarity of female’s reactions to ADHD is forcing a great deal of them to suffer undiagnosed for extremely long amounts of time. Trapped in their own bodies, stuck in a jail cell of of their own mind for years, with no way to get out. However, once a brave soul decides that they are tired of being trapped and finally reach out to a doctor, they don’t always get what they need, and their cry out for help becomes pointless. It is concerningly common for a female to go from undiagnosed, to misdiagnosed. A female will go to their doctor or their therapist or whoever it may be, and tell them exactly how they feel. Overwhelmed, disorganized-the common way females with ADHD feel. Instead of being diagnosed with attention deficit as they should be, it is far more likely for that female to be diagnosed with something else, like depression. Being misdiagnosed leads to even more problems. Now not only is she suffering from ADHD, but she is going through pointless treatments for something that she doesn’t actually have. Misdiagnosis doesn’t just come from lack of judgement, either. Females are getting misdiagnosed time after time, because the criteria their doctors are using to diagnose ADHD are outdated. Early clinical studies for this condition were made in the 1970s, and are the same studies that we use to this day. The studies were mostly based on teenage/adult males, not females. How are we supposed to diagnose a women with a condition that has mostly been studied on the male gender only? It’s time to start doing more research, and start paying more attention to women with ADHD, so we can be set free from the cages of our own minds.

My trip down the spiritual path to self discovery and how yoga has benefitted my mind, body and soul
Y
oga is my saving grace, as cliche as that may sound. The practices have strengthened my body, helped me relax to clear my mind of negative energies, and let in new ideas. Each practice is geared toward reaching a higher spiritual encounter and working out the body God gave you. Over time I have taken a variety of different classes with unique instructors to the point where I have rounded out what I believe to be the best stress relief out there. An instructor of mine once told me that our bodies are capable of being pushed far past our limits, but it is our minds that stop us from reaching further into ourselves. Letting go of the stressful ties life hold us in, yoga gives me the chance to take a moment in my hectic schedule to breathe and connect with what my soul needs in a way that my body will benefit from. The key to getting the most out of your yoga class starts with the right instructor. When you can connect with your instructor on a deep

personal level the experience as a whole is transformed. Knowing that they are 100 percent there for you through a session, and have your best intentions at heart is the most rewarding feeling. The bonds I've created with some of my own instructors is one of the main reasons why yoga is still such a prominent factor in my life today. My practice began after a conversation I had with my aunt. She took me to my first class about three years ago, when she began instructing. Walking in completely blind, I had no idea it was going to leave such an impact on me. I was introduced to the spiritual exercise and fell in love with the way it has made me feel ever since. The overwhelming rush of positive energy and the sense of self discovery is something you can only experience through the practice first hand. After my first class I came out of the room with a new perspective on how I wanted to live my life from that moment on.
