Official Launch of Festival and RIAI Awards Exhibition Opening
Lecture: Martin Rauch
6pm WIT Dept of Architecture Official launch of the Waterford Festival of Architecture 2013 with the Mayor of Waterford, Cllr. Jim D’Arcy. This launch will be immediately followed by the Opening of Ireland’s Annual Architectural Awards 2012 exhibition, by Michelle Fagan, President, R.I.A.I and the presentation of Certificates to the winners of the WFA Primary Schools Colouring Competition.
2pm Over the course of two decades of research in theory and practice, Martin Rauch, the Austrian architect, has become a leader in the field of earth building, an expert of international stature, who is sought out as a collaborator by world-famous architects and artists. Since April 2010 Martin Rauch is Honorary professor of the UNESCO Chair Earthen architecture, building cultures and sustainable development.

Architectural Scavenger Hunt 12noon–4pm “The City at Play” will be explored through an activity trail in and around Waterford’s rich architectural heritage. You might be asked to sculpt a piece of art, paint a picture, plant a flower or even dance! Get a team together – it’s for all ages. Prizes to be won! Organised by students of the WIT Dept of Architecture. Sign up on the day, and get your maps, at The Granary, Hanover St. from 12 noon.

Drawing Workshops at Christ Church Cathedral

Staff and students from the Dept of Architecture perform an eclectic mix of music, covering all genres.
Artist Eddie O’Keeffe and Architect George Wright will make pen and ink and pencil drawings of selected detail and artifacts in the Cathedral, and will assist you with your own drawings. Materials supplied.

Wreath Laying Ceremony
“Animating the Urban Environment”
1pm At the John Roberts family grave, Greyfriars Wreath laying by Dean Maria Jansson, Christ Church Cathedral and Fr. Paul Waldron, Administrator, Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity. Followed by a recital from choirs of both John Roberts designed cathedrals; The Choir of Christ Church Cathedral, under the directorship of Eric Sweeney, and The Cathedral Youth Choir, under the directorship of Caroline Reid-O’Brien.
Film Screening- “Eames: The Architect and the Painter” 8pm Garter Lane Theatre The husband-and-wife team of Charles and Ray Eames were America’s most influential and important industrial designers. This film draws from a treasure trove of archival material, as well as new interviews with friends, colleague, and experts.
Architecture as an ArtForm: Exhibition of Architect in Residence Project for Waterford County Council
City Library In January Spraoi invited proposals from Irish street companies and artists from other disciplines for the creation of new work to be staged at the Spraoi Festival 2013. 3rd year architecture students from WIT submitted proposals based on the theme “The City at Play”. They were required to become familiar with the city, and envision a piece of art that would engage it’s audience. Their submissions make up one up one of the exhibitions.
WFA Primary School Colouring Competition City Library The six pictures which make up the cover of this year’s festival brochure are the of winners of the WFA Colouring Competition 2013. Pupils were asked to draw their own interpretations of some of Waterford’s most iconic buildings. All entries will be on display in the library. The Architect-in-Residence Project 2013 takes place in Portlaw NS, and Holy Cross, Tramore. This year the theme reflects the overall theme of the festival, The City at Play, under the guidance of Architects Tom Finnegan, and Harry Bent, and Architectural Technologist, Sinead de Faoite. The exhibition will be officially opened in Portlaw at 11am on Wed 17.

An exhibition of painting, textiles and sculpture. There is a dialogue between the inner and the outer worlds, the external reflecting the internal, a mirror in time. Kathleen Delaney takes the image of a wardrobe merged and entwined with a living root system that serves to ground the object in a series of drawing/collages.
Exploring two different narratives during the Design by Research semester, students studied Aeschylus’s Orestia with the aim of exploring the play spatially and An Tàin where complexities between the thesis and context were targeted. This exhibition of their work is curated by Aleksandar Kostic, 5th Year Tutor, WIT Dept of Architecture.

The Granary
Originally from Waterford, now living in Dublin, Sarah’s work is an investigation into the narrative capacity of empty spaces and explores the symbolic value of architectural structures and the ability of furniture to personify the inhabitants of a household or an interior space. Part of the FOH Space project kindly sponsored by AIB Waterford.
DLS College interpreted the theme ‘The City at Play’ in a range of media. 1st Years to 6th Years elected to produce individual interpretations while the 5th Years 3D’d their pieces. Students of DLS College were thrilled to be part of this newly established link with the WFA and the WIT Architecture Department.
Fringe Event
The Unusual History of Ether with Rebecca Collins Garter Lane Arts Centre Saturday April 20th, 8pm Tickets: €15 (conc €10) A songwriting partnership of Waterford-born singer-songwriter Rebecca Collins and Danish guitarist Mikkel Ploug. The two met several years ago when they played together at the Dublin Fringe Festival and immediately forged a musical connection. They have toured Ireland, the UK and Denmark and were featured on RTE Television, The Works and Lyric FM, The Blue of The Night.
Architecture Detective Trail For all Primary schools, running from April 8th to 19th. Maps will be distributed to schools in Waterford City in early April. Set out and explore the city for its architectural treasures and hidden details, while unravelling the mystery hidden in the clues!
