WATERFORD INSTITuTE OF TECHNOLOGY

Completing the MA in Teaching and Learning in Further and

Higher Education (MALT) was a wonderful learning experience.

All of the lecturers on the course were without exception top

class and very committed. I have vivid memories from the course

where the lecturers created a very positive and supportive

learning environment while at the same time they challenged and encouraged us.

I had previously worked in a number

of management, IT and business roles.

In 2010, I made a decision to change

career paths and I returned to education to pursue the MALT course. The course equipped me with the academic and

practical skills to be an effective

teacher and I am now teaching adults in the Further Education sector.

I find this work very satisfying and rewarding.

I would advise any student

starting out to fully immerse

themselves in the course

and to enjoy the learning

experience. Go into every class

with an open and positive frame of mind. At times, the work will be tough but the satisfaction

of completing the course and

the experiences along the way make it well worth the effort.

WATERFORD INSTITuTE OF TECHNOLOGY

‘I chose to study at WIT because of its reputation for outstanding

graduate employability, excellent teaching standards and impressive

Student Services.

I undertook the BBS in order to achieve high value added skills,

knowledge and networks necessary for me to make improved strategic business decisions that would add significant value to the industry I

work in. The diversity of subjects offered in the course from Economics to Finance to Leadership meant that I gained exposure to every aspect

of a business function and I now have a deeper understanding and appreciation of cross functional relationships and

strategies.

The BBS at WIT is taught by experts in their

field, most of whom have an abundance of

industry knowledge and experience which

ensured the skills I learnt were directly transferable to the market place.

I also had the opportunity to undertake

rigorous research in order to develop new knowledge and innovate business

thinking which I could apply

directly to my day job.

Life has taught me the value of empowerment through

education; the more you learn the more opportunities you

have, simple as. So don’t waste

time, get stuck in and learn

as much as you can. As the

saying goes “because you’re worth it!”

I left secondary school during 5th year. At the time, I felt

that formal education was not for me. Eight years later and

with a better understanding of the benefits of education and

qualifications, I started an engineering degree in WIT through

adult education. As I was working full-time, attending evening classes was the only feasible option for me to partake in studies.

At first, the workload seemed overwhelming,

but with a bit of hard work and help from

my classmates the semesters flew by and

I even enjoyed some of the classes.

Some of our lecturers worked in local

industries, which allowed them to provide

us with real life experience and relevant examples of industry trends.

My classmates were all employees of various local companies,

and each was able to give an

insight to practices and procedures within their

workplaces.

I have recently graduated

with an Honours Degree

in Computer Aided

Manufacturing and I am now looking to pursue postgraduate study.

As it was some years since I studied, I was a bit daunted by

the prospect of attending college. I was quickly put at ease by the very helpful and understanding lecturers. When I complete my qualification later this

year, I believe that it will have enhanced my own life and prepared me with a new

set of skills that will add to my previous experience and therefore increase

and widen my future career prospects. It has given me a greater

understanding and knowledge in the field of IT.

I would advise anyone thinking of doing a course in WIT to “Go for it”. Plan your time

and help is there if you need it. You are never too old to learn something new and who knows - you might actually enjoy the

experience. I know I did. I am glad I did.

It was over thirty years since I had been in education.

As the course was part-time it was flexible enough to

allow me to continue working. The lecturers’ knowledge

and expertise in their relevant fields

was exemplary. I also found that as the

class sizes were small, it was difficult for any student in the class to feel isolated or lost. I would recommend the degree to anyone who wishes to

progress in the field.

My confidence and self-esteem has

greatly improved. It took the fear

out of third level education,

enhanced my life and allowed me to enjoy learning. Adult education is the perfect setting to return to education. Life experience is a powerful base no matter what

course you want to do. Believe in yourself and your abilities

and take the opportunity to

return to education when it

arises. You won’t regret it as

it will add value to all that you undertake in life.

LEVEL

6

The Higher Certificate in Arts in Advocacy Studies was designed by IT Sligo and is aimed at people who work as advocates or would like to develop their skills in this area. The WIT/IT Sligo initiative offers a real continuing professional development opportunity for people working in the field of advocacy. Advocacy is defined as representing others in areas where they require support, or representing persons who cannot represent themselves. Advocacy services go some way to redress the inequalities between the individual and large powerful organisations. For many years, informal advocacy has always existed but formal services are beginning to develop particularly in the disability area. As such it is away to ‘level the playing field’ for marginalised groups it allows them to claim their entitlements and exercise choices; and protects their quality of life in circumstances where they may be dependent on services.
