Go commercial if you want a future, Kiwi clubs warned Clubs need to get “commercial” if they want a longterm future. That was a clear message delivered to the Clubs New Zealand conference by one of Australia’s most influential club administrators. Anthony Ball – the chief executive officer of ClubsNSW since 2010, chief executive officer of ClubKENO Holdings and executive director of Clubs Australia – delivered this message to the Clubs New Zealand conference in March. He stressed the importance of clubs acting as businesses, for their officers to improve their governance and commercial skills, and for clubs to put strategies in place for growth. Ball quoted Clubs NZ estimates that 65-70 per cent of clubs are struggling financially – membership is declining and legislative challenges are mounting. Revenue from beverages is estimated to be down 10% following the introduction of the new drinkdriving laws. Ball – a long-time visitor to Clubs New Zealand conferences and annual meetings – says clubs have to adopt a “commercial mindset”. “You have to find out what your people want and find a way to give it to them. You have to take a long-term view. You have improve and/or extend your current offering, look for opportunities, take calculated risks. He says market research has shown that the combination of bistro/restaurant facilities and goodvalue food and drinks tops the customer wish-list, and is by far the biggest factor in why people visit a club, or which club they choose. Location and convenience, a good atmosphere, a safe environment, and customer service were also

Poem of Anzac Respect Wendy Joy Baker has produced a special poem for Anzac Day for some years now. This year she has entitled it Respect. She will present her poem at the Anzac service in Milton and has been asked to do it at Waihi next year. She has also written a poem on war memorials after chasing up the local council and writing to prime minister John Key about the state of the Mataura Island War Memorial near where she lives in Southland. The council’s response is shown in the before (left) and after (right) photos above. She sees this as a demonstration of her own respect.
Respect
To Respect...those who gave their lives To Respect...those who did survive These war heroes and heroines in our hearts will always be and ‘we will remember them’ as love...we see For respect is the action they gave to all. War took its toll...sadly...many did fall Respect for their Nation they did hold and we will respect them forever... ....deeply...in our souls.
War Memorials on Sacred Ground
Anthony Ball...only one way to go in the top-ranking group of crucial reasons – rated important or very important by more than 85 per cent of those surveyed. Other important considerations – rated important or very important by 53-65% - were family-friendly environment, bar facilities, special benefits for members, courtesy transport home, and live entertainment. Ball used the examples of several Australian clubs that have taken initiatives to raise their commercial performance. These have included offering upmarket dining at reasonable prices, a restaurant featuring fresh garden produce, a “farm experience” including a children’s play area with animals, and the provision of high-quality childcare at affordable prices. One proposed club complex plans an “intergenerational lifestyle village”, complete with fitness centre, retirement village, childcare, swimming complex, respite care, restaurants, cafes and function centre.
Our war memorials are sacred and they sit on sacred ground. These cenotaphs of our country are taongas in communities all around. The names on these monuments are respected each and every day These people served in the wars in such a courageous way. The mana of these monuments and the land they are place upon is filed with love and loyalty for those service people sadly gone. War Memorials are important for our hearts and soul;s They display honour and valour of those who were strong and bold.

NEWS/OPINION
Need for training, information Conference has just ended and what a marvellous conference it was! This year’s hosts, Club Waimea, did an amazing job of helping us to enjoy the excellent array of speakers on offer. Around 250 delegates attended the conference from 58 clubs. Particularly encouraging was the fact that during the annual general meeting, few questions were forthcoming from members, which indicates that everyone is happy with the direction we are taking as a movement. Your voice is important and there was one small issue raised, which we will be following up. An Auckland delegate suggested more detailed financial information would be welcome rather than the breakdown of information we presented this year. A reminder that the financials are available for viewing on the Clubs New Zealand website, but we will definitely be looking at this delegate’s suggestion and will be endeavouring to provide those of you who would like it with more detailed financial information. It was also heartening to realise that board area meetings held through the year have been highly successful, particularly in providing smaller clubs with the information and assistance they need.
ATTENTION SKIERS TUROA – OHAKUNE
We recognise the need for formal training for committee and board members, who play such an important role in the movement. Tom Fisher
President, Clubs New Zealand We realise that the expense of attending the national conference can be unwarranted for smaller clubs, so these meetings are of particular importance to ensure everyone is kept up to date and has the support they need. We also recognise the need for formal training for committee and board members, who play such an important role in the movement. We have approached our training-provider and plan to start offering more formal training opportunities to committee and board members some time this year.
Ohakune Club invites you to visit for refreshments Meals Friday & Saturday nights – Bar Snacks – Snooker – PoolDarts - Sky TV – Gaming Machines TAB Terminal – Internet Access OHAKUNE CLUB 71 GOLDFINCH ST, OHAKUNE PHONE 06 3858221 Email ohakuneclub@xtra.co.nz
With changes to the liquor and gaming laws, is is especially important to meet the need for more information and better training to ensure everyone is kept up to speed with current requirements. This approach will also help bring us into line with the Australian movement, which is already offering formal training to its board members. Watch this space. The clubs insurance policy scheme we have developed with the Abbott Group is now available for all club members. We are in the process of getting information about the scheme out to all clubs. It’s a completely new venture for Clubs New
Zealand. We are excited about it as we believe it provides a win-win situation for both clubs and their members. And, finally, my praise to you all for the way you continue to administer your clubs, both large and small, successfully during challenging times. The conference was once again a heartening experience as I met many delegates and discovered anew the reason why we all continue to love the club movement so much – the special people the movement attracts and their dedication to ensuring their clubs are operated in the best way possible for the benefit of their members.
Jackson joins the RSA’s new National Assn “The RSA has a special place in my life,” says filmmaker Peter Jackson (right), an early recruit for the RSA’s new National Association. He has become a founding member along with New Zealand Defence Force chief Lt Gen Timothy Keating, former defence chief Lt Gen (rtd) Rhys Jones, and investment banker Phillip Meyer. The new association is open to anyone and helps the RSA champion the “Anzac spirit” values, helps provide welfare for veterans and their families, and allows members to keep in touch on line. “My dad used to spend every Friday night with his mates at the Pukerua Bay RSA,” says Jackson.
“When I was old enough – well, almost old enough – he would take me along. it’s a memory I hold dear.” Jackson is helping with preparations for World War 1 centenary commemorations and has designed a museum exhibition in Wellington for Anzac Day as well as a life-sized Western Front battlefield in Waiouru with trenches. He also collects World War 1 airplanes and artefacts, which are on display at Omaka, near Blenheim.

Oamaru cracks double, just misses treble Home advantage was tantalisingly close to everything when the Oamaru Club hosted the 2015 Clubs New Zealand men’s outdoor bowls tournament. Three titles were up the taking – Oamaru grabbed two of them abd was runner-up for the third. Three Kellys – Andrew, Patrick and Bruce – combined with Merve Roper win the coverted Moase Cup final over Papanui Outdoor Bowling Club. Another Oamaru quartet – Gordon Brown, Jeff Williams, John Smith and Joe Gordon – also beat a Papanui four to take the Kelly Plate. Fellow Oamaruvians Peter Bell, Hugh Catto, Darrell Whitburn and Dave Smillie couldn’t quite complete the treble, losing the Jim Dempsey Trophy decider to Mike Gray, Les Denpster-Rivett, Barry
Wilcox and Tony Hart (Hamilton Workingmen’s Club). “We’re not sure if there’s ever been a team from one club in each final,.” says Oamaru Club bowls section committee member Trevor Robertson. He pronounced the tournament as “a tremendous success”, saying that he had spoken to had been happy with how it went. Trevor Robertson thanked all who offered their time to help with the competition, plus the hosting club committees, the women who provided the meals, the greenkeeper, the bar staff, the volunteers, and those filled in at short notice. “Without them, there would be no tournament,” he said.

Waitomo readies for big event Karen Phelps The Waitomo Club is gearing up to host the 2015 Clubs New Zealand North Island men’s golf tournament in November. The club’s golfing section president, Roy Chadwick, describes the event as more like a reunion, with golfers from around the North Island meeting up for the event. “The event has been going for many years and it’s a very social occasion,” he says. “It’s a great chance to meet up with old friends and make new ones. The club is really looking forward to hosting this year’s event and making sure it’s a good one.” Between 200 and 300 are expected for this year’s tournament, on November 6-7. Roy Chadwick says the club has experience in hosting golf tournaments – including the nationals in 2002 and the Clubs New Zealand North Island women’s tournament in 2008. He promises a great tournament with good hospitality at the club each night, and transport provided between the club, the golf course and local motels. Participants will be able to relax and enjoy themselves to the full. Teams of three players will battle for the best net scores over two days, with the winners taking home the trophy. A supporters tournament will run alongside the main event, and this will also be open to women. All participants have to be a member of a New Zealand chartered club and an affiliated member of New Zealand Golf. The first day of the main tournament will be held at Piopio-Aria Golf Club, with the second day at the Waitomo Golf Club. The supporters event will be the same clubs, but in reverse order. The club has a strong golf section of around 20, who compete in national and international club events around New Zealand.
The Clubs New Zealand North Island men’s golf tournament in November will be played over two courses – the Waitomo Town & Country Club (left) and the Pio Pio-Aria Golf Club (below) “We like to look after our visitors,” says Roy. “People can come and enjoy the hospitality of the Waitomo Club, have meals there, and enjoy a drink and the general facilities the club offers. It’s a very social event.” The Waitomo Club, right in the centre of Te Kuiti, is open every day except Christmas Day and Good Friday. A wide range of facilities includes a TAB and up to 18 gaming machines, with a jackpot that starts at $500 and reaches $1000. There are also snooker tables and dartboards – something for everybody, says Roy. The club bistro serves a range of meals, including seafood selections, mixed grills, steak, oysters and scallops. Entrees and bar snacks including pâté with crackers, fish bites, and baskets of chips and burgers. Upstairs, the club has a large area which will be the base for the golf tournament – registration place on the first night, with the delegates’ meeting, prizegiving on the final night. Juniors get their hooks into organisers A new fishing contest for junior anglers worked so well the Whangaroa Sports Fishing Club plans to run it again next year with the hope of even more entries, prizes and fun. Held as “open” event for club members and nonmembers alike, it was divided into three age ranges – up to six years; seven to 10, and 11 to 16. The Whangaroa Marina allowed the anglers to fish off the breakwater for a few hours and a local charter boat skipper, Terry Lay, gave up his time and his boat, Christina, to take several parties of young anglers and their parents for a fish in the harbour. Within a few hours, the excited anglers began bringing in their sprats, trevally, kahawai, spotties, snapper, koheru, kingfish, even a starfish, to be weighed. There were so many prizes – heaviest three fishes in each category and age range, and heaps of lucky
draws that every young angler went away happy. The club also found a major new sponsor, Joseph Stradwick, from builder Stryde Projects, for its annual juniors weekend. He took part in the contest with his children aboard White Noise. . Seven boats and 15 anglers enjoyed a calm, sunny and hot day and a settled sea. On the first day six-year-old, novice angler Zander Adkins, fishing off his Dad’s boat, landed a 39.2kg blue shark on an 8kg line after 20 minutes. This won him the Whangamel Perpetual Cup for the heaviest gamefish of the contest. Marlin Candy, Lucy Cotter and Chloe Mackay all caught skipjack tunas, with Lucy’s 5.22kg fish qualifying for the inter-club junior contest. On the second day, Chloe brought in a 7.64kg yellowfin tuna, Zayn and Zander Adkins landed 8.02kg and 8kg kingfishes respectively, and Jade Thomas caught the biggest snapper (3.3kg) of the contest on a 6kg line.

CLUB LIFE: UPPER HUT T COSSIE
Outdoor courtyard proves a The Upper Hutt Cossie Club’s new outdoor courtyard, which opened in January, is proving popular with members, especially when there’s entertainment or a barbecue involved. The club is targeting private functions, says manager Dean Candy. The courtyard is seen as complementing the club’s other four function rooms. “It will be a perfect venue for wedding ceremonies,” says Dean. “We host post-wedding events at the club regularly, but now we will be able to offer the complete package.” The club sees functions as vital to arrest the decline in bar turnover since the lower drink driving alcohol limits were introduced. “Like all licensed venues, the club’s trading has stagnated since December,” he says. “But weddings, 21st parties etc are good reasons for patrons to celebrate and spend money.” Upper Hutt Cossie continues to actively seek high-profile concerts and shows. As well as giving members the opportunity to see international acts, these events also attract people who have never visited the club and could join. The club recently hosted a darts dinner with two of the world’s leading players, Phil Taylor and Adrian Lewis. Taylor told the sell-out crowd that when they arrived, they thought they were at the wrong venue. This was the best club they have visited – and they have played at many around the world. In June Upper Hutt Cossie will be the venue for a two-day darts tournament which will involve New Zealand’s eight leading darts players and will be streamed live through the TAB. “The tournament will replicate televised darts tournaments from overseas,” says Dean. “A TAB

Dean Candy says that, thanks to the support of the TAB, there will be significant prizemoney for a clubs punting competition on the Saturday afternoon. Trips for partners are being organised to Martinborough wineries, the Te Papa museum and Lord Of The Ring sites. Review cures ‘bad habits’ Club aims to be city ‘showplace’
The New Plymouth Club was looking down a void in the middle of last year – Lindsay Campbell retired in June after nine years as manager and the club’s bistro did not have a manager. “Some would say, `What now?’, but for me, it was a golden opportunity to take stock, take some good advice and do a complete review of the club,” says president Bill Foley. He and the executive began running a critical eye over the workings of the rest of the club, and engaged the services of a consultant, People Plus People Ltd. “It highlighted just how inefficient we were in some areas, so much so that it had become club culture – not a good way it run a business,” says Bill Foley. “After three or four months I could finally get a good night’s sleep. “I must congratulate the committee for making very good decisions during this process. We formulated a health and safety and human resources plan, along with goals to be put in place. “We then hired a forensic accountant, a director of Club Accounting and Investigation Ltd, to do an audit before we hired a new manager. Once again, we were found wanting in some areas – nothing

NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB serious, just habits that had become bad culture.” He believes this is good advice for any club involved in reviewing its operations and plans: “After all, it’s for the benefit of the staff and members of the club who, in fact, make the club what it is. With both exercises completed and new goals in place, they set about finding a new manager, and three months on, hired Peter Grey. “Peter came from outside the club scene, but with a very impressive CV. He is a great acquisition to the staff of our club.
Palmy Nth has a lot going for it From page 10 Examples of dishes include grilled chicken and camembert burgers, seafood platters, steak, cajun chicken salad, and grilled Malaysian beef kebabs. There is also a daily specials board. The club has 18 gaming machines and an on-site TAB, plus snooker, 8 ball, darts, hold em poker and Thursday housie. A courtesy van is provided on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights from 3.30pm until the club closes. Denise Garrigan says the 125th anniversary celebrations helped generate interest in the club, which currently has around 1500 members. “It gave us a lot of exposure, which has translated into more people becoming members because they visited the club, and then realised what we have to offer here.
Bill says New Plymouth continues to buck the national trend on gaming machines: “We are trading really well in that department.” The Government’s lowering of the legal alcohol level when driving has had some effect on the club, he says. “So the square we should be looking at needs to increased in size ... more challenges, I guess, but not insurmountable with a very proactive committee such as ours. The time has come to look into courtesy vans. He says they have applied handbrake a little on the WoW project (future extensions overlooking
the sea) as a temporary measure because of the economic climate, but that committee continues to work towards the aim of “making what we have a showplace for New Plymouth”. Bill says the club has lots going on for people to take part in and is always a welcoming place for members and guests: “You can play 8 ball, snooker and darts, or have a go at the gaming machines or the TAB. There is regular entertainment on Friday nights and live sports on the big screen.” The club also has “extremely strong ties” with the New Plymouth community, and regularly makes grants and donations, and hosts community events.

‘Whole package’ extends to Karen Phelps Which spud is the biggest and which spud plant is the heaviest? A couple of the probing questions to which Invercargill Workingmen’s Club members found the answers at the club’s annual Spud Dig Day. The fun event involves planting a seed spud, growing it and then comparing the results. This year the heaviest spud was grown by Ella McKenzie and was weighed in at a whopping 1.15 kilograms. John Curry won the heaviest shaw (that’s the part of the potato plant that grows above ground) at 10.16kg. The Kevin Herrett Baking Trophy was won by Jude Tosh with a carrot cake. But the day is not all about fun and games, says club manager Kevin Gray. It’s also about raising money for Hospice Southland. An auction of items donated by sponsors raised $6000 for the organisation. The club will add to this, and donate $10,000.00 in total this year. Over the 22 years the club has held the annual event, more than $130,000 has been raised, says Kevin Gray. “For the club, Spud Dig Day is a big event and a chance to give something back. It’s days like this that remind us we are not just a club we have a drink at. We are our own small community and, when we all pull together we can achieve almost anything.” The Invercargill WMC celebrated its 50th jubilee last year, which Kevin believes shows it is “vibrant and going strong”. With a membership of almost, it is the biggest chartered club in Invercargill. It is also the home of the Invercargill RSA. Kevin says the club promotes itself as “the club that has it all.” The club’s real showcard is its Corinthian Conventions Centre, which consists of three fully airconditioned and carpeted rooms.

Kits help schools remember Jo Bailey More than 2500 New Zealand schools are being encouraged and equipped to establish “fields of remembrance” for the 18,166 New Zealanders who died in World War 1. The schools are being supplied with kits to set up fields of personalised white crosses to honour those who served and did not return home, and to engage the students in learning about their sacrifice. Each kit contains 30 white crosses, and stickers with the names of 30 of the fallen. It’s part of an initiative by the Fields of Remembrance Trust, working with the Ministry of Education. “World War 1 was when New Zealand came of age as a nation, and I believe these commemorations are another right of passage,” says David McGregor, independent chairman of the Fields of Remembrance Trust. “We are not about glorifying war, but helping students understand the impact the war had on New Zealand and helping them connect to people from a different time and place.” The trust was formed in November 2012 by three organisations, which serve as its trustees – the Passchendaele Society, the New Zealand RSA and the Auckland RSA. The initial objective was for all communities in New Zealand to create a Field of Remembrance to honour the local people who served. This grew to include the schools project after the Ministry of Education identified a desire to include World War 1 commemorations as a curriculum project. “We made contact with Apryll Parata, a senior executive at the ministry responsible for the curriculum programme, and developed the idea for sending the resource kit out to New Zealand schools,” says McGregor. Graham Gibson, vice chair of the Fields of Remembrance Trust and president of the Auckland RSA, was instrumental in gaining sponsorship, which has helped fund more than 80,000 white crosses, 75,000 stickers and 12,500 posters. The 30 crosses in each individual kit represent the size of a platoon. Every school will also be given stickers with the names of four Victoria Cross recipients, the youngest New Zealander who died (aged 17), an All Black captain, and local soldiers and nurses from their regions. Another of the crosses will commemorate the Unknown Soldier with the label, “known unto God”. The kit also contains poppies, plaques, commemoration posters a guidebook of instructions on how to assemble the field, and background information about the commemorations and ways in
Dame Trelise Cooper shares a joke with a volunteer preparing the Remembrance kits. which schools might like to be involved. “A large team of people put in a huge effort to package up the kits over the holiday period,” says Gibson. “ We are also grateful for the support of Dame Trelise Cooper, who is the first female patron of Auckland RSA.” Many schools have already shared their ideas for commemorations, he says. These include: learning about the lives and experiences of those who died; choosing one soldier to investigate and report on; discovering if any of their own ancestors fought in World War 1; exploring the past through mapwork, writing, reading and music; cooking Anzac biscuits. David McGregor says it is entirely up to the schools how they participate, but he would be happy if they took the opportunity to engage with the RSA and New Zealand Defence Forces as part of the project. “Every NZDF establishment is assembling a field of remembrance. It would be great to see schools invite local servicemen and women to their commemorations, or work with RSA members and veterans to assist with creating fields or holding services.” He is proud of the “marvellous effort” by the Fields of Remembrance Trust project team. “It has been hard work putting it all together. However the results will be well worth it when we see fields being assembled around the country, and our young people honouring the sacrifice of the people, many not much older than them, who never made it home.”

Trees to become a Dion Crooks A massive, 10-year living and growing memorial project on the Coromandel has its origins in the discussion about sustainable tourism for the area. Anzac Day will mark the start of the planting of 18,166 trees on the Coromandel to honour all New Zealand soldiers who died in World War 1. The Thames-Coromandel District Council had endorsed the New Zealand World War One Memorial Forests project, and underwritten the estimated $452,000 cost. Costs will be recouped from grants from external agencies and the sale of the trees to the public. Once the first plantings have been made on the project – also known as the Te Wao Whakamaumaharatanga – the Forest of Memories - on Anzac Day, a push for more intensive planting with schools and volunteers groups will follow. Thames-Coromandel mayor Glenn Leach says one of the goals is to provide a series of forests that provide environmental education for schoolchildren, a focal point for community involvement, and places

of environmental sustainability. He says the project is part of a move to combine heritage aspects with the Coromandel’s natural attractions. “A natural forest memorial fits that so well. It is a way of giving these people a little bit of New Zealand again that they can be remembered by. “It’s also a way of talking to the youth of the country and involving them in our history and in our natural resource. We see it as ongoing process. It will not stop on Anzac Day. We want to provide a means of integrated education that will carry on. Imagine what it will be like in a hundred years.” He says the feedback, goodwill and co-operation from the Department of Conservation, the Waikato Regional Council, local RSAs, iwi, Forest and Bird, Kauri 2000, and the general community has been fantastic. An average of 6000 trees will need to be planted each year to complete the project by the Armistice Day 2018 target. Each forest will commemorate a different battle or campaign. It is proposed to start by planting five forests one in each community board area. As more sites become available, more forests will be added. The aim is produce memorial forests that will

The council is also giving people around the country the opportunity to buy a tree in the name of a family member who fought in World War 1. It will be looking to sell at least 3000 trees to the public to meet funding targets. Contractors will used for site preparation, such as digging the holes and staking, numbering and GPS-plotting, with volunteers involved in the initial planting and maintenance. Contractors will work with volunteer groups to look after each tree in the longer term. Final decisions on sites of each battle are yet to be made, but it is proposed that Gallipoli (2779 trees) will be honoured on DoC land above Cathedral Cove, the Battle of Passchendaele at the new Whitianga Cemetery, the Battle of Messines Ridge (1300 trees) at the Thames War Memorial, the Palestine campaign at the Pauanui-Hikuai (Tangitarori Lane) walkway, and the Battle of Le Quesnoy at Whangamata. A separate site at the entrance to Thames will remember the war dead from the town.

The curator of the National War Memorial in Wellington and his staff have been working alongside an army of workers, builders and specialists for four years to get the park ready for Anzac Day 2015 and the centenary commemorations of the Gallipoli landings. “I must admit we’re all getting a little impatient, but we’re at a point where we can see the end,” he says. “Getting back to normal will be great.” The largest publicly funded commemoration project for the World War 1 centenary has involved building an underground tunnel for traffic so that the park can be developed above. The Arras tunnel, named after the famous New Zealand tunnelling company, opened in September, and work then emerged above ground. Pukeahu commemorates the more than 300,000 New Zealanders who have served their country and the 30,000 who have died. It includes a hall of memories, a carillon, and the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior; the area also encompasses the Dominion Museum, which will soon be home to filmmaker Sir Peter Jackson’s Great War exhibition. The park is intended to be a national place where New Zealanders can remember and reflect on their country’s experience of war, military conflict and peacekeeping, and how that experience shapes our ideals and sense of national identity. Its design allows for the construction of memorials, particularly from countries with a shared
military heritage. The first of these is an Australian memorial that will be dedicated during Anzac Week. A New Zealand memorial is already sited on Anzac Parade in Canberra. The concept of Pukeahu is that it should be about – and for – the people of New Zealand. And for Paul Riley, managing the National War Memorial is a privilege. “I love the place, it’s a beautiful building. I also like the variety – each day rolls into the next, but you never quite know who’s about to walk in the door.” In the 20 years he has been there, he has seen many high-profile visitors from around the world, but he says it’s the veterans and families who come to pay their respects and the school visits he really enjoys. When the Unknown Warrior was interred in a specially built tomb in front of the National War Memorial 10 years ago, thousands came to pay their respect in the first week – mirroring the crowds that turned up to the dedication of the carillon in 1932. Riley is hopeful the park opening on will attract similar interest. The Pukeahu National War Memorial Park will be officially opened by the governor-general, Lt Gen Sir Jerry Mateparae, and the prime minister, John Key, in a public ceremony at 11am on April 18. The ceremony will include a re-dedication of the Hall of Memories and the Roll of Honour, plus a creative performance. Paul Riley admits it will be emotional for him: “I might even shed a little tear. It will be a great occasion.”

Hundreds honour military horses Jo Bailey Three hundred horses, of virtually every shape, size and colour, gathered at a remote North Canterbury cemetery on February 15 to honour the New Zealand military horses of World War 1. They were accompanied at Birch Hill Station, near Okuku, by close to 800 spectators. Following two memorial rides, a service was held where wreaths were laid, anthems were sung, blessings were made, and tears were shed. RSA national president BJ Clark, who was MC, describes the event as “a wonderful tribute to the horses and extremely moving”. The organisers “did a great job”, he says. They worked closely with the RSA to ensure correct procedure and protocol was followed, and the event was handled respectfully. He found the Birch Hill cemetery – which has a large, curved, stone monument with plaques honouring the 10 men from the station who went to World War 1 and the New Zealand military horses – “absolutely stunning and a must-visit”. LtCol Edward Bowler (EB) Millton, who owned the station during the war, commissioned the monument, which was officially opened to the public in 1937. An inscription on one plaque reads: ‘In memory of the horses of the 8th Regiment NZMR that died in the Great War 1914-1918’. Of the 10,000 horses that left New Zealand for the war, only four ‘officers’ horses’ are said to have been repatriated. The others were either killed in the war, sold to Egyptians, or pooled with the British Army. Many Kiwi soldiers shot their horses rather leave them behind in Egypt to endure horrific, slave-like conditions. Thereza Rosanowksi, who lives at Okuku, came up with the idea of a memorial event after spotting

The plaque was thought to be one of only two of its kind in the South Island (the other was found at the Timaru RSA last year and relocated in August to the Phar Lap Raceway at Washdyke). “After a sleepless night thinking about the potential to organise a memorial ride locally, I visited a nearby

friend and long-time resident, Ian Summerfield, who helped plan the trails as he knew the area very well.” They went for a drive to look at possible routes and, within an hour and a half, had positive feedback from every farmer whose land would be traversed. station has been trimmed and is now farmed to raise funds for youth. “It was quite uncanny and all seemed meant to be,” she says. Most of the participants rode or walked one of two trails (six or 10 kilometres) before the memorial service. Purple poppies and ribbons, indicating valour, were worn throughout the weekend, and a wreath of rosemary was laid around a tree in remembrance for Kakahu, EB Millton’s favourite horse, which was buried there. A group of locals spent six months organising the event, garnering support from many businesses and organisations. These included the Rangiora RSA, St John, the New Zealand Pony Club Association, the Canterbury Clydesdale Club and the Canterbury branch of Antique Historical Arms Association. A function in Rangiora the night before the ride included Derrick Millton talking about the history of Birch Hill Station, Paul Sanderson presenting his World War 1 military horse documentary (All the King’s Horses), author and historian Carolyn Mincham, poet Mike Boyd and Rachel Ensor, a supporter of the Brooke Hospital. One of the spot prizes was won by a 97-year-old woman who remembered going to a lunch with EB Millton at Birch Hill when she was 13. Sarah Flint, one of the organisers, delved into the history of the 10 soldiers listed on the Birch Hill Station cemetery monument. Six descendants were cross-bearers at the event. “The event was full of emotion and moving tributes, and provided a real connection to the past,” says Rosanowski. “The World War 1 horses didn’t receive the Dickin Medal for animal bravery or the acknowledgment they deserved. To be able to commemorate their efforts and teach our young people about their plight and sacrifice means they will not be forgotten.”

Jewels of the Coast: Hokitika Gorge (left) and Lake Mahinapua (right).
Hokitika showcases Coast diversity MONDAY: Twenty-four Papanui Club members departed from the club with Ron Sheppard, of Strathmore Coachlines, our driver and tour guide We headed over Porters Pass through the tussock and matagouri lowlands; the cloud had cleared and the snow glistened on the distant mountain tops. Through Castle Hill with the amazing rock formations and skirting Lake Pearson, then alongside the upper Waimakariri River which had a lot less water than usual. Past the bushclad hills of Arthurs Pass National Park, along the narrow winding road to Arthurs Pass township, on to the viaduct to Otira, Kumara, and then Hokitika. Our accommodation for the next four nights was the Beachfront Hotel, right on the waterfront, 50 metres from the sea. We dined at the Ocean View Restaurant – a three-course meal while we watched the sun set. Hokitika was founded on gold mining in 1864, and was the centre of the West Coast gold rush, boasting 102 hotels and three opera houses.
PAPANUI CLUB TUESDAY: We visited Lake Mahinapua where there is a picnic area, and new shelters are being constructed. There is abundant wildlife and the area is popular for boating, fishing, kayaking; there are many walking tracks. Then it was on to the Treetop Walkway, a steel platform 20 metres high. that extends 450 metres over the forest. You can climb to the top of the tower, 40 metres above the forest floor. Next stop was at Ross, a small, historic goldmining town established in 1860 and the base for many miners. The historic Empire Hotel is worth a visit, also the Catholic church (built in 1866). In 1909 a gold nugget weighing 3.1 kilograms was found; it was later named the Roddy Nugget after mines minister Roderick McKenzie. Since 1988 a large opencast mine has operated next to the town. A geologist has estimated that gold deposits of about $7 million lie
under the town, but the residents are not in favour of expanding the mine. That evening we had a mystery trip into the backblocks, ending up at the Royal Mail Hotel at Woodstock for our evening meal. It’s very homely and welcoming, place and surprise, surprise, it happened to be a two-for-one night. Built around 1860, it was the stopping place for mail coaches and has been used as a meeting place, post office, even a morgue. We also visited the glow-worm dell on the north side of town. WEDNESDAY: Travelled inland via Kaniere, Kokatahi and Kowhitirangi to the Hokitika River gorge. It’s a short walk to the viewing platform where you look down on the swing bridge and the blue water of the Hokitika River surrounded by lush, native bush, It’s a picture to behold. We stopped at Kowhitirangi where a memorial has been erected to the seven people killed by Stanley Graham when he ran amok in 1941. Back to Kokatahi and we followed the narrow loop road round the foot of the hills and through the native
bush, looked at the Dorothy Falls and Lake Kaniere, and stopped at the boating/picnic area for a picnic lunch beside the lake. There are numerous walking tracks in this area. Dinner that night was at the Stumpers Bar & Cafe where we were welcomed with a roaring fire and a menu full of choices. THURSDAY: Travelled to Shantytown Heritage Park, a re-created goldrush village. We were treated to a ride on the fully restored bush tramway, some of the group tried their hand at gold panning and found some microscopic specks in their dish. There are museums of the many businesses that operated in that era – sawmill, printer, butchery, blacksmith, foundry, etc – and the re-created Chinatown. Dinner that evening was at the Stations Inn Restaurant and Bar. We were presented with a wonderful menu and delicious meals. FRIDAY: Heavy rain overnight, but a cloudy morning to load the suitcases on the bus and head for home.. A hearty vote of thanks to Ron Sheppard for the organisation of our trips and the secretive places he finds for our evening meals.

TRAVEL: PALMERSTON NORTH COSSIE
RailCruiser big hit on East Neil Grant
The picturesque East Cape was the destination for the Palmerston North Cossie travel club’s annual jaunt. The tour group in a jubilant mood at Mamaku Station before boarding the RailCruiser.
The worst bit about getting home was having to cook meals.
Centrally located in Napier, Palm City Motor Inn provides a variety of accommodation styles to suit your specific needs. From studio apartments to larger two bedroom apartments, and apartments with wheel chair access.
You can’t beat experience when it comes to making travel plans. Palmerston North Cossie Club has long-time stalwart Betty Green, and her friend, Mary, who do the business for the travel club’s annual trip. They make sure there’s plenty of variety packed into the journey. Mind you, as many of the regulars are hovering on either side of 80, it’s also important not to overload each day with too much of a good thing. Betty and Mary put out a paper with several possibilities to consider, then democracy takes over. Once the destination is decided, motels are contacted and booked, regular bus driver Don Busch is alerted his services are required, and the itinerary is planned. This February’s trip was based around East Cape. Taihape is just the right distance away from Palmerston North for a comfort and morning-tea break. Just out of town is the Gumboot Manor with good bus access, good loos, and good stuff for smoko. Taupo is nicely placed for a lunch break, and by the time you get to Rotorua, well, why not stop and put your feet up for a couple of nights? There’s plenty to do around this city. The real highlight was the RailCruiser. Based on the mothballed Rotorua railway line, it has self-drive railcars, like oversized golf carts. Each holds four people, and, would you know it, the controls are operated by a back-seat passenger. Starting at Mamaku Station, they travel 10 kilometres through through bush and past lakes to Tarukenga, giving glimpses of heritage sites associated with timber and tourist operators. Not to be missed, Betty says. Nor is the lunch at Mamaku Station. The Paradise Valley Springs Wildlife Park is another Rotorua attraction with a wide range of exotic animals like lions, deer and possums, and native birds and fish. Heading off to Whakatane, a diversion takes you to the Te Wairoa buried village, a remnant of the Mt Tarawera eruption that killed perhaps 150 people, and wiped out the Pink and White Terraces. The Cortez Motel was the base for most of the travellers in Whakatane. Betty says they were treated really well there. Nearby Ohope has a little business, Scilla, selling handmade, Belgian-style chocolates – individually in a wide range of flavours, and in fancy presentation boxes. Paradise for chocoholics. The scenic journey around East Cape leads to Hicks Bay, going past Pacific Coast Macadamias, which, says Betty, has a Nuthouse Cafe that does super lunches. The Hicks Bay Motel was a great place to stay – the proprietors were exceptionally helpful, she says.

Cape trip
Te Araroa on the way south to Gisborne, has a 600-year-old pohutukawa tree, almost as wide as the bus is long, and quite a sight. The East Cape Manuka Oil and Honey Centre was a good stopping point. Gisborne’s Eastland Motor Lodge, and the Alfresco Motel for the overflow, were most hospitable, as were the people at the Gisborne Club restaurant. A day trip to Tolaga Bay filled in Sunday before the trip to Napier. The Palm City Motor Inn was a really comfortable base in the art deco city. Visits to Marineland and the Pernel orchard rounded off the trip’s activities. “The worst bit about getting home was having to cook meals,” Betty sums up.

TRAVEL: TIMARU TOWN & COUNTRY
Southerners enjoy a taste of Raro Peter Rawson
Member, travel section, Timaru Town & Country Club Our adventure started on October 20 with a drive to Christchurch, flight to Auckland and flight to Rarotonga! Not quite! International flight delayed 12 hours, so overnight stay in Auckland in hotel provided by Air New Zealand or in the airport terminal. Terminal “sleepers” discovered uncomfortable seats and a champion snorer. Arrived in Rarotonga and transferred to the Edgewater Resort without drama. The resort turned out to be a lovely place...always clean and tidy, nice sandy beach, sparkling swimming pool, very pretty flowers in the gardens, excellent meals and very cheerful, obliging staff. A number of activities and entertainments were available and were enjoyed on site, especially a concert that highlighted Cook Islands history and customs, swimming, snorkelling and feeding tropical fish in the bay. There seemed to be at least one wedding each day, although none in our group – despite plenty of encouragement. Not to be missed was the evening happy hour when the women enjoyed a wide variety
of cocktails at half price and the men tried the local beers. We chose to go, as a group, with Koko Lagoon PHOTOS – Above: Ready to rock – and roll: The Timaru Town & Country Club travellers. Cruise Ltd on the glass-bottom boats exploring Muri Lagoon. It turned out to be much more than a boat trip. The entertainment started as we gathered on the beach – singing to the accompaniment of drums and ukuleles – and continued almost non-stop, along with information on and demonstrations of Island culture. We were most impressed by the coconuttree-climbing skill of the Pacific champion and the barbecue-style lunch on Kokomiri Islet. And yes there were lots of beautiful fish to be seen and crabs to be raced. The bus trip was an experience in itself and gave us a good look around the entire island. On other days, smaller groups went to the tropical gardens, shopping (limited, but trust our gang to find their best-ever milk shakes close by the bus stop in town), kayaking and fishing. The biggest smiles of the week were those of the fishermen who spent four hours on the water with Marlin Queen Charters before being rewarded with a good-sized and very powerful mahimahi. Although the tale of its capture was told many times, some details remain murky. But not the taste – the resort chefs cooked a fillet for our last evening dinner. Too soon it was time to pack up. Plane on time, but not before we were able to watch, on the airport television, New Zealand beat up the Aussies at rugby league.
