Cossie offers helping hand to local youth The Upper Hutt Cossie Club is giving away $50,000 to the youth of Upper Hutt to help them to pursue academic, sporting, cultural or entrepreneurial goals Twenty $2500 Kick Start scholarships are being offered to Upper Hutt residents between the ages of 16 and 21. Cossie Club manager Dean Candy says that after a number of years of offering $5000 in scholarships, the club executive decided it wanted to make a significant contribution to the young people of Upper Hutt. An independent selection committee has been set up to judge applications (69 were received) and winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in November. Each year the club gives away more than $200,000 in grants, with the major focus on its annual charity. Also each year the club selects a charity and hosts fundraising events, such as its

annual sports dinner, an Easter fiesta and a charity auction, with the proceeds going to the charity. Over the last six years it has given just under $250,000 to the Wellington Free Ambulance, the Lifeflight Trust, Alzheimers Wellington, the Prostate and Breast Cancer foundations, and the Te Omanga Hospice. This year’s charity is the Child Cancer Foundation.

Donations are based on the benefit to the local community. For example in 2011, every time an Upper Hutt resident required the services of the Lifeflight Trust helicopter or fixed-wing plane, the club paid $2500 towards the cost of the flight. That year 18 Upper Hutt people required the service, so the club paid out $45,000; all the patients survived. In addition to the annual charity, the club deals with applications for funding and supports many local schools, kindergartens, sports clubs and nonprofit organisations.

How to catch a thief – good accounting goes a long way Joanne Newman Good accounting systems keep the crims out. If clubs had half-decent accounting systems in place, I would not be so busy as a forensic auditor, and insurance companies would not forever be processing claims. Unfortunately, most of the accountants clubs engage are not specialists in club accounting; they don’t know what systems are needed to close the door on the crooks waiting for an opportunity to help themselves. We can’t get away from technology, and there are now some great programs that make club accounting easier and more secure. The downside is your staff need to know how to use them. In many cases, they do not, and the result is a bird’s nest that may be virtually impossible to untangle - and thieves love accounting muddles. The most common problems are: * inadequately trained staff who do not know how to code transactions correctly or do journals; * accountants who do not know how thieves manipulate accounting systems; * coding heaps of transactions to a suspense account and not resolving queries before printing management reports. Life would be much easier if clubs got their accounting systems right and became more professional about the way they handle money before a thief forces them to. There are no shortcuts in this area. Employ an accountant who specialises in club work – such as Smart Business Centre Accountants. Do not employ your regular, run-of-

the-mill accountant because he/she happens to be mates with someone in the club, or happens to be located just around the corner. You are not buying a litre of milk at the dairy; you are dealing with club property. You need to be professional about who you appoint as your club accountant. When we put in accounting systems, we have three things in mind: * providing information clubs need, when they need it – not 12 months later when they don’t need it, or when missing funds and the person who took them are long gone. * installing systems and disciplines that make it hard for thieves to pinch club money and property, and easy to detect if they do – this is absolutely critical. * making sure all requirements of the Incorporated Societies Act are complied with. I believe most accountants are doing only the last (and the least important) of these adequately. * Joanne Newman is a New Zealand authority on club accounting and forensic auditing. Masters comes to inner city The New Zealand Masters Games village and headquarters have traditionally been based in a large marquee in Springvale, near Wanganui, But the February 2017 Games will be based round the War Memorial Centre in Wanganui’s central business district. Masters Games chief executive Kathy Cunningham hopes the new venue will bring an energy and exciting vibe to the CBD and give participants and supporters a new experience with ethnic and gourmet food trucks, an acoustic stage, a wine bar and comfortable outdoor seating. The forecourt will be open to all visitors to Wanganui, but only those supporting or participating in the Games will be invited to the entertainment on offer over the 10 nights from February 3-12. The programme the opening night band, The Magnificent Seven fronted by Eddie Rayner from Split Enz, Jordan Luck from The Exponents, and Peter Urlich from Th’ Dudes. The Waratahs, and covers bands Union and CVE make up the weekends headline acts, while mid-week there will be fashion shows, quiz nights and a film festival. The rise and rise of a darts champion Sue Russell Judy Fenton picked up a dart for the first time in 2004 when her husband, Daniel, asked her to play for the Whangamata Club team that was a player short for a club match. She’s now the national chartered-clubs and council women’s champion and a member of the New Zealand Darts Council women’s team A loyal member of Whangamata Club, she has risen through the “darty” ranks at a stellar rate . Now, after winning the Ted Clements Memorial tournament in Levin a year ago, she and fellow top player Tina Osborne, from Auckland, are set to compete in the 43rd Winmau World Masters tournament in London. “We will be arriving in London in the last week of November, with the tournament to held on December 1 at the Lake Side Country Club, Frimley Green, London,” Judy says. While this is the first time she has been such a distance to play darts, it is not her first time representing New Zealand overseas. This “very competitively natured” sportswoman has not only won the North Island and national chartered clubs titles for the last two years, but also three Oceania Masters tournaments, competing twice in Australia and in Swanson, Auckland. She has also won the Dart Players Australia and the Australasian women’s singles titles in 2014 and 2015. Having played both indoor and outdoor netball for many years since primary school age, Judy says her naturally competitive nature has been significant in her rapid rise in darts. “When a tournament is approaching, I’ll put in two to three hours of practice a day,” she says.

Judy obviously has plenty if natural capabilities at the game, but she also accesses an on-line dartsplaying website on which she can play with other similar-level players around the world. “I have a dartboard in my lounge with a webcamera over it connected to my laptop, so I can go on line and play whenever I want with players anywhere who belong. My on-line name is ‘Judge Judy’.” At her local club she concentrates on playing against men who can match her abilities, and has found this has lifted her game. The format for the London event is cut-throat – the best of seven legs in the semi-final and nine in the final. While she has been looking forward to this major event, she has nor forgotten a busy domestic season ahead in the new year – an invitation-only event in Timaru in February and the North Island Chartered Club champs in March.

Levin explorers enjoy ‘cossie- tour’ Kelly Deeks The Levin Cosmopolitan Club’s senior members adjunct headed to the East Coast for a trip in May, taking in the sights from Whakatane to Dannevirke, and supporting cossie clubs on the way. Seventeen members filled two vans from Cross Country Rentals. One was driven by adjunct leader Fred Carrick, while another member’s friend came from Wellington to drive the second van. From Levin, the group headed to Whakatane, stopping about halfway at Taupo, where they calling in for lunch at the Taupo Cosmopolitan Club. “We’ve stopped there several times before, and they put on a really good feed,” Fred says. “As we’re cossie club members, we try to get to all the cossie clubs when we travel. If we’ve got 20 people or so, there are a few dollars spent and we can help the clubs out.”

stayed at the Hicks Bay Motel Lodge; they enjoyed their dinner meals at the lodge and breakfast the next morning. Back on the road, they headed for Gisborne, following at Cape all the way around. While going through some rural country, they passed pigs, goats, horses, and cows on the road. They saw the East Cape lighthouse and carried on to Tolaga Bay, where they enjoyed lunch at the Tolaga Bay Inn. On their arrival in, the group went to the Gisborne Cosmopolitan Club for dinner, and then on to the Eastland Motor Lodge. Next morning, it was a lovely day, the Levinites took off to the top of Kaiti Hill to take in the views over Gisborne, before heading out to the National Arboretum of New Zealand at Eastwoodhill. With more than 131 hectares planted in exotic and native trees, shrubs, and climber plantings, Eastwoodhill is regarded as the largest and most comprehensive collection of northern hemisphere trees south of the equator. The group went in a Jeep on a guided tour around the arboretum, viewing some special flora and a huge variety of native and exotic birdlife which takes sanctuary at Eastwoodhill. While in Gisborne, the adventurers had hoped to take part in a Dive Tatapouri Reef Ecology tour, where they would be kitted out in waders before entering the water at low tide to observe and interact the natural inhabitants of Tatapouri Bay– and feed wild stingrays. Unfortunately, the tide was high at the time and they had to continue on their travels. Having missed out this time, they have earmarked Dive Tatapouri as a must-do at the next opportunity. It was on to Wairoa for lunch and a short stop, then the Taradale RSA south of Napier, for dinner and accommodation next door at the Asure Colonial Lodge Motel. Next day, after a stop in Dannevirke for lunch, the group made it home to Levin. Fred says he thoroughly enjoyed mapping out another great trip and taking his party around.

Blossom and Kelly Deeks Blossoms and butterflies were just some of the colourful features of Timaru Town and Country Club travel section’s trip to Alexandra and Dunedin over South Canterbury Anniversary weekend in September. Fourteen club members joined a Central Travel Club tour of 32 people travelling from Timaru on the anniversary Friday (September 23). After picking up further passengers in Waimate, Oamaru, Milton, and Lawrence, the bus travelled on to Alexandra, where it dropped the Timaru T & C group at the Centennial Court Motor Inn.. Some of the Timaru travellers headed into town for dinner, while others chose to stay put, put their

feet up, and dine at the motel’s Ninety-Six restaurant and wine bar. On the Saturday morning, 12 of the tour passengers took a trip with Clutha River Cruises, to see the historic gold mining sites – they were established in 1861. Ann Thomson, one of the Timaru Town and Country Club travel section, says the boat trip was amazing. Yes, there was “an awfully cold wind“ that had the group dressed up with scarves around their faces. But they got to see all the little huts and stores (made from schist stone) that were nestled amongst the rocks, as well as some of Central Otago’s spectacular scenery. “You couldn’t even see some of the little huts until they were pointed out to you,” Ann says.

scenery win hearts The group made it back to the motel in the afternoon in time to catch the Alexandra Blossom Festival procession, which went straight past the front of the motel. Some of the Timaruvians went to the market stalls, and everyone had dinner at the motel restaurant. On the Sunday morning, the group travelled to Dunedin, via Middlemarch, where they split. Half joined a Dunedin Railways trip on the Taieri Gorge Railway, while the other half went to Discovery World Tropical Forest, Dunedin’s only rainforest, which is filled with lush flora and hundreds of colourful, exotic butterflies. The group came back together and headed to Larnach Castle for Sunday-night dinner and accommodation. It was too cold to dine in the ballroom as intended,

but the visitors were moved to a warmer room and enjoyed their dinner. Some people stayed the night in the four-star Larnach Lodge, while some of the more intrepid tackled a night in the 140-year-old, category 1 listed historic stables next door. They all enjoyed a look-out across the harbour, ocean, and peninsula, but couldn’t see anything for the fog. On the Monday morning, the group visited the Royal Albatross Centre to see the world’s only mainland breeding colony of royal albatross. Attention then turned to the return trip back to Timaru. Ann says the Central Travel Club tour leaders were a lovely couple, who looked after their passengers and provided plenty of information and history about each place visited.

Modernisation on agenda at Waipa Sue Russell A lot improvements are taking place at the Waipa WMC in Te Awamutu. “It has been quite exciting these past few months, says Mark Kelly, who took over as secretary-manager in June. Improvements include updating the club’s upper entrance with an automatic door, the launch of a new Facebook page, and a new website. “I guess the best way to describe what is happening is that we are giving attention to

modernising the look and feel of the club to bring it into line more with the d cor you would expect to find in hospitality venues,” he says. The new website will also be operative in the new year: “We want to compete with other hospitality establishments in the town, and that’s about giving people a good reason to come here and to have a sense of ownership and belonging to the club. That’s the way of the future for us.” Part of that strategy will see a more modern drink offering supplied on certain nights. Mark describes this time as taking carefully planned “baby-steps”. The modernisation process will eventually include conference/meeting space, says Mark. “One of my real interests is in encouraging bigger events to be held at the club. We had a wedding expo in October and a Farewell to Ford Falcon car show on Bathurst day. He says Gary Boys is a fantastic president and the club’s committee has a wave of new members on board. As a special membership offer, any one joining the club goes into the draw to receive a ticket to a Chiefs rugby match. “They will be chauffeur-driven to the game and our courtesy van will bring them back. It’s just a way of adding a bit of interest and anticipation through the rugby season.” The club hasn’t forgotten the importance of families either; a new children’s frames area, with an box, play-station and pool table, will be complete by the end of the year. A free courtesy van is available every day bar Monday and Wednesday. For those who enjoy a flutter on the pokies, the club has 18 machines - a new air-conditioning unit will keep punters comfortable over summer.

Golfers come to enjoy Ngaruawahia ways Ngaruawahia – 10 minutes north of Hamilton and an hour south of Auckland – is gathering popularity in the golfing world. The town is home to an easy-walking 18 hole golf course that offers a challenging length. Secretarymanager Lyn MacRury says the sandy loam does not suffer in the rainy season as it drains very quickly: “We are definitely an all-weather course.” She says the fairways have well defined rough and most of them are bunkered. The poa greens are slick and are renowned for their consistently high standard. The Pro Shop is run by the resident professional, Duncan Bennett, who can help people with golf equipment enquiries.

With a membership of 560-600, the club is a very popular spot, says Lyn. “The modern clubhouse balcony is a great spot to sit and watch golfers coming up the eighteenth while you have a quiet drink. The bar and catering facilities are excellent, and we take bookings for golf groups of all sizes. “We have Stay and Play deals with the Anglesea Motel and the Sails Motor Inn, in Hamilton. And we give a very good discount to all affiliated Clubs New Zealand groups. Tai chi helps bring life into club Sue Russell This year has been positive for the Cambridge Cosmopolitan Club, says secretary/manager Donna Sheehan. “It has definitely picked up since last year with more new members, some of them new to Cambridge, and a group who joined from the retirement village just over the road.” Six hundred people call Cambridge Cossie, which is in Leamington, their club. The club also has, amongst its membership, two netball teams, and Donna says this popular activity creates another membership stream. “If they want to play netball, they join the club because after their games, they come here to unwind and enjoy some social time together.” The Cambridge Cossie Club was founded in 1973 and has regularly added spaces to the original building. Facilities now include 8 ball and snooker tables, 14 gaming machines, and a self-service TAB pod. Once a week, on Wednesday nights, there’s a session of tai chi which is proving popular. “We can have up to 25 people at tai chi,” says Donna. “It’s a great activity for a club to host, and it brings life into the club when it might otherwise be quiet.” The club’s restaurant serves dinner from Thursday through Saturday. Donna says groups are welcome to book lunches by arrangement. Once a month the local Lions Club meets for dinner on a Tuesday night. “We’ve revamped our menu lately. We have a contract arrangement in place for the kitchen services and it works well,” Donna says. A new Facebook page is being worked on, and, once completed, the restaurant menu will be posted on it. From her perspective as manager, Donna says Cambridge Cosmopolitan Club is a very positive

place to work: “We have an excellent, very hard working committee, and that makes all the difference in the world for management and my team.” Subs are tiered – full membership at $50, $40 for senior members, and a category called associate members who pay $25 and may visit the club up to 25 times. Junior membership, for those over the age of 14 and younger than 18 is priced at $10. As the ‘business end’ of the year approaches, Donna says her main goal for 2017 is to work hard to attract more members, and especially more families. “We have really great staff. Clubs can be demanding places to work in and I’m very proud of the way our bar and support staff pitch in to make this club a warm and welcoming place for members and visitors.”

Refurbishment drives growth at Cromwell Sue Russell The Cromwell Town and Country Club, which overlooks the Kawarau arm of Lake Dunstan in the Central Otago settlement, will be 40 years old this year. Secretary-manager Neil McDowall, who has been with the club for two and a half of those years, says the club is in very good heart. “When I joined the club we had around 930 members and, with the help of a very capable committee and a great staff, it has been really satisfying to have seen that number grow to around 1250. That has been partly due to Cromwell’s group as people discover it’s a beautiful town just a short drive from Queenstown, Wanaka and Alexandra. But Neil feels that more importantly, club growth has come from the refurbishment of some significant

spaces that has made the club more user-friendly and welcoming. “We’ve got a million-dollar view and the main lounge looks straight out to Printers Bay. We’ve recently upgraded the front entrance and toilet facilities. More improvements will happen as the club is in a sound financial position.” He is intent on developing adjunct life as a way to engage the regular membership more. Bathurst Day this year was celebrated in with a ‘Show and Shine’ car event. Not surprisingly, fishing is a very strong adjunct and the club’s annual fishing competition will be held on January 2 next year. “Those who enter fish anywhere they wish in the area and bring their prize catches back later in the afternoon for weighing and prizegiving. It’s an event looked forward to by young and old alike.” When Interclub spoke to Neil, the club had just

Kitchen no longer ‘in a thoroughfare’ From page 14 completed a major upgrade of the kitchen area, which he says used to feel like it was positioned in a thoroughfare. Work began on the project on September 19; it has involved closing the kitchen and cooking for about five weeks from a mobile kitchen hired from the local Lions. The kitchen was gutted, and a 2.8-metre extension built, doubling the original size. During the work cooking equipment was relocated and some equipment was upgraded. Neil says the kitchen refit project, led by building company Carpentry South, went smoothly. The

Printers Bay restaurant is now open from Thursday to Saturday from 5.30pm. and he is hoping to introduce a lunch option over the Christmas/New Year period. He’s proud of the service the club offers members and visitors, including children. A jungle gym and a swing were installed 18 months ago. Neil has recently been voted Central Otago/ Southland delegate on the Clubs New Zealand board, and is looking forward to this role. “I enjoy seeing a club grow, and the whole club movement do the same thing. We’ve got a real gem of a club here in Cromwell and I know my staff will do everything to make visitors and guests of members feel really at home.”

‘Significant upgrade’ ongoing at Motueka The Motueka Memorial RSA – a small club of 1100 members – is in the midst of significant refurbishment and upgrade. It’s all part of an initiative by the club to create a modern and inviting facility for patrons and their guests, and, ultimately, attract new members. When Interclub spoke with manager Kevin Gray in mid-October, a courtesy van was in its fourth week of operation, the inside of the clubrooms had been freshly painted (including new graphics and detailing), a new bar had been installed, and new furniture had been acquired as part of the diningroom upgrade. “I’ve been involved in clubs over 30 years and the thing I most enjoy is greeting and meeting a whole array of different visitors,” says Kevin. “We are members of the Motor Caravan Association and have spaces for six motor-homes. The Nelson/Tasman district is a popular destination, especially over summer, and we often have motorhome owners enjoying what the club has to offer.” The club, which is in easy distance of many wineries, has also just launched a wine club. Those wanting a little gamble can choose from nine gaming machines, and the club is equipped for pool, snooker, darts, fishing, indoor bowls and euchre. It also has an active women’s section.

The club restaurant is open six days a week for dinner, with lunches available on Fridays and Sundays. The menu can be accessed from the club’s website (www.motuekarsa.co.nz). “We have recently launched a comprehensive new menu offering a range of options from bar snacks, desserts, low-cost meals and full dinners,” says Kevin. “Key to a successful club is a great restaurant, and I think we’ve got an excellent menu on offer, catering for all tastes and budgets.” The club also hosts a Newcomers to Motueka Group which meets every Wednesday and Friday mornings from 10.30am. Quiz nights, starting at 7pm on the last Tuesday of each month, are also popular, while karaoke night is the first Friday of each month from 6.30pm. In mid-November the club ran an open day as a way of showcasing what it has to offer. “We are very keen to open our doors more and show locals and visitors alike just how great the club is looking,” says Kevin. He maintains that the key to the club moving ahead is the quality and commitment of those on its executive. The Motueka executive is elected on an annual basis, but he says he’s very happy to work with a very stable and helpful group. Timaru T & C Club renovations ‘best thing for years’ Sue Russell Substantial alterations and improvements to the layout and look of Timaru Town and Country Club is the best thing that has happened to the club for years, according to manager Vince Gardner. The club enjoys the prospect of looking out over the Timaru Golf Club; when the golf club merged into Timaru T&C four years ago, one of the aims of the major renovation work was to make best use of the views out to the course. “We have created a new entrance and a new caf space, both in operation, and the middle area of the club has been completed,” says Vince. The total value of the work will come in at just under a million, and Vince says the way club

members rallied around to help in all sorts of ways and gave their time voluntarily to help shift gear, was stunning. “I can’t speak loudly enough of this contribution. Two electrical companies have supplied free labour and opened accounts for us in our name.” The design changes were drafted by Timaru company Draftline, while another local, Gail Turnpike, from Turnpike Interiors, chose the interior colour pallet and materials, echoing and honouring Timaru’s history of architecture. The wallpaper, with its corrugated 3D look, is an example. “The old restaurant was tucked away upstairs,” says Vince. “My concept was to bring food to the forefront of the club. food options located in the perfect place in the club. We’ve quadrupled our food sales.” Gary LeCompte is relatively new to the club as head chef, and Vince says he’s brought a new level of quality to the offerings, with members and guests responding accordingly. The club is blessed to be located in such a lovely situation, he says. “How many clubs have this space and view for members to enjoy The merging of the golf club was a perfect move as that club wasn’t managing to make ends meet any more. By becoming part of Timaru Town and Country, the golf committee can concentrate on enhancing the golfing experience for its members and visitors.” The whole intent from the renovations has been to bring the outside in, and the floor-to-ceiling windows have achieved that. Timber from Timaru’s old wharf has been placed above the reception area. Upstairs is now a dedicated reception/function area, and a new bar will be built to service this space. When Interclub spoke with Vince, the downstairs section of the major project was all but completed: “We’re just waiting for the lift-well to go in and for sign-off on building regulations and compliances, then it’s done.”

Community response to the spaces the club has created have seen three revisions of the project budget, he says. “We didn’t expect the onslaught that has happened. Groups such as the Timaru Rock ‘n Roll Club and Rotary that used to meet elsewhere in the town now come here. Our intent was to become the sports and sub-interest hub of the community, and that’s exactly what has happened.”

The big challenge with the Timaru Town & Country Club interior was to retain the club’s identity while modernising the look. Interior designer Gayle Pike, from Turnpike Interiors, says she retained the basic logo as it its identity of Timaru – the mountains, the sea, the city, the port loop. Updated colours – black, white and silver – became the backdrop of the design, and this has been extended to the club’s vehicles and staff uniforms. “The wallpapers all reflect the club – corrugated

iron, metallic, animal skins, trees etc,” she says. “Designed to enhance the beautiful setting in the golf course, they blend, while creating atmosphere often lacking in public venues with plain, painted walls.” A large slab of wood at the top of the new reception desk is a recycled pile from the Timaru wharf. She says the new kitchen was a challenge visually because it is very open and is part of the members’ area. Design details include numerous steel poles suspended from the ceiling, which carry all the electrical practical cables.

‘Little tavern’ pulls visitors, workers Sue Russell A good way to describe Wanaka Districts Club is that it has an appealing sense of ‘little tavern’ about it. Nestled behind the reserve above the township, the club is home to nearly 900 members, many of whom are seasonal visitors. While the building is relatively small by chartered-club standards, the one area comfortably accommodates a dining room, leaners, chairs and tables, along with a pool table. Noel Payne, manager for the past five years, says one of the jewels in the club’s crown is its expansive outdoor space. “It’s great to have this space right next to the club for patrons to enjoy, a stone’s throw from the clubroom. The barbecue is popular with families and groups; when the doors are open, it creates a great indoor/outdoor connection.” One advantage of the club’s size. says Noel, is that it’s a melting pot of young and older, especially when the town receives its annual wave of winter visitors and young ones working on the slopes.

“The ski workers have adopted this club to a degree. It’s a way for them to meet the locals, and get great-value meals and drinks. The Cardrona and Treble Cone workers start arriving in May and June.” He says it was good to see interest from younger members in standing for the committee at the club’s annual meeting in September. “Marketing the club is a thing we want to do more of. Because it isn’t in the centre of town, it doesn’t attract the visitors. Yet those who do find us and pop in say they enjoy the atmosphere and facilities.” Those include four pokie machines and a warming indoor fireplace. When Interclub visited in mid-October, the club had just enjoyed its Bathurst race-day celebration, which included a stand in front of the large screen. “It was a fantastic day with lots of fun enjoyed by those keen to watch the race and savour the atmosphere we created,” says Noel The club is open every day and welcomes visitors from other Clubs New Zealand members, along with those enjoying the scenery and of recreational activities in the district. Phil calls time after 31 years Sue Russell After 31 years at the Howick Club, manager Phil Saul will step down from his role next year and retire to Tauranga. He plans to gradually hand over to his successor and complete the process by the annual meeting in May. Once settled in Tauranga, the former merchant seaman plans to write a book about his life and experiences at sea in the British Merchant Navy. He describes the club, established in 1979, as very family oriented. Membership stands at 4800 – and is increasing steadily month by month. “We don’t push the club in any way, yet we attract upwards of 30 new members to join each month,” he says. “I think our emphasis on the club being family-friendly has a good deal to do with that. The Howick Club was one of the first clubs to focus on family.” The children’s Halloween disco is an event to look forward to each year, along with the massive kids’ Christmas party on the first Sunday in December when the grassed area at the rear of the club becomes home to numerous roundabouts, bouncy castles and other entertainment. “All the children between the ages of one and 10 who are registered receive a gift paid for

by the parents/guardians, while the club provides all the entertainment free. Anywhere up to 1000 children attend the day and have a great time.” Inside, the club has a restaurant that can seat up to 240 patrons comfortably. While Howick has a typical array of activities/adjuncts, Phil says the “ladies’ section” is particularly strong. A wine group also visits vineyards once a month. Phil describes the club’s executive committee as very switched on and very committed to the club’s growth and success. “They’re certainly not the sort of committee that cruises along for the ride. It makes a tremendous difference for me and the staff at the club to experience their ongoing enthusiasm toward new ideas that will bring about more growth and keep the club relevant.” Every few years committee members take a roadtrip to visit other clubs. Phil says it’s a very good thing to do and an opportunity to pick up ideas.

Bays Club, a community club in Browns Bay, Auckland, is coming out of the doldrums after a gaming-machine slump five years ago threatened it future. General manager Dave Hewitson says that like a lot of clubs, Bays relied heavily on gaming-machine money to help pay for running costs. “The money that came from the gaming machines was really special. When that started falling off, we looked to our kitchen and tried to align it with our bar to push bar sales up. But that didn’t quite work, and a couple of years ago, we got to the situation where if we didn’t do something, we’d fold.” The club had a younger committee with some business acumen, and after a special general meeting in November 2014, club members were asked to back the committee in making changes to create a business hub, rather than running a traditional club. “If we didn’t make changes, the following May we would be closed,” Dave says. “We had to spend some money to make money, so we increased our bar prices slightly, brought the restaurant pricing to

a level where we could still entice members to eat here, and along the way make some extra income. “The committee also dropped the price of membership, and we’ve grown from just on 1600 members, to 3500. Our membership demographics have changed from people in their 70s, to people in their 40s and up.” The club was also renovated with a new paint job and LED lighting; members commented on how fresh it was looking. Bays Club now changes things up regularly to keep that fresh appeal. Dave says the kitchen has been the saving grace, and is now filling the income gap left by the downturn from the gaming machines. “We still receive money out of them, but we’ve now got to the stage where we hope that by the end of next year, the club will be self-sufficient and not rely on any gaming money at all.” The club’s Tiri View Lounge restaurant and kitchen now employs six chefs, and is running seven days a week. Dave says the quality of the food has really improved, thanks to getting the right chefs. “We’ve really seen a change in attitude. People are coming out to eat, and it is helping to drive bar sales. If we still had pies in the pie warmer, we wouldn’t be here.”

Development continues at Glen Eden Kelly Deeks The Glen Eden RSA’s newly developed lounge area will soon be complemented by a new bar. Construction is due to start in early December. The lounge and restaurant were redesigned and renovated from floor to ceiling this year; this involved new carpets, paintwork, and new furniture. The updated area has encouraged new members who have taken advantage of the deal whereby those dining in The Foothills steak and seafood restaurant receive a $10 discount on the membership fee. A square bar will replace the current curved bar, and will split the room into two separate areas. Lion Breweries is providing the bar system and Glen Eden RSA will be one of few clubs to have Stella Artois on tap.

Secretary/manager James Patullo says that with a 10-day construction programme envisaged, the new bar will be ready for the veterans’ and children’s Christmas parties.. On New Year’s Eve, the five-piece Black Rose band will entertain members and help them bring in the New Year with a range of music styles, including rhythm and blues, rock ‘n’ roll, country, and reggae. As part of the redevelopment, 12 purpose-built dartboards were installed in the lounge area, giving 18 in all. The dartboards in the lounge were built for large tournaments, and were in action when the club hosted the national RSA darts tournament over Labour Weekend this year. About 100 players from

Open day ‘huge success’ at Papakura Kelly Deeks A fun open day at Papakura Club has resulted in 30 new members and their families. And the club is planning another open day for 2017. The Papakura Club’s secretary manager, Betty Ormsby, says the inaugural open day in April this year was a response to the difficulty in attracting new members. “It was such a huge success that it’s something that is going to be done every year in April,” she says. “We wanted to show what belonging to a club is

all about. Especially now, when it is so tough to get people in. “The focus is not on alcohol any more; we wanted to show it’s not just a place for drinking. It’s for socialising and sports events in a family environment for Mum, Dad, and the kids.” She says those at the open day were very curious about the club’s 10 sports sections, and the club was able to demonstrate how its equipment is free for everyone to use. “If you want to participate in outdoor bowls, but you’re not sure whether that’s for you, the club provides all the equipment for you to have a social game and give it a go.”

Betty says the club sections were keen to put on a good show. “They were all here. Indoor and outdoor bowls, snooker and 8 ball, a mini-golf course outside. The Papakura Country Music Club, which uses our facilities every second week, entertained.” On the open day, section activities and entertainment ran from 11am to 5pm when a free sausage sizzle was provided for visitors and those involved in the presentations. Papakura’s sports sections have a history of performing with distinction in Clubs New Zealand events. The club’s latest champions recently won a Clubs NZ North Island snooker pairs title, which

Papatoetoe backs a winner by taking on the catering Kelly Deeks The Papatoetoe Cosmopolitan Club started 2016 on the wrong foot, having to replace the air conditioning units in its lounge bar and special function room. The $120,000-plus cost forced the club to put some planned projects on hold, but manager Lynne Smith says these will be re-addressed next year. “The projects put on hold were our new outdoor area and children’s playground, which we will start planning in 2017.” Once that was resolved, she says, the club went from strength to strength this year, taking over the catering in May. “For the first time in its 53-year history, the club is now running the catering, and this has proved very successful,” Lynne says. “Catering is up in terms of turnover. As a flow-on from that, we have more Christmas functions booked than ever” – at least two a week until Christmas. She says more people are visiting the restaurant because of the reputation of the food provided by chef Dean Hobbs. He was engaged by the previous

The Papatoetoe Cossie Club bar decorated for Melbourne Cup day. independent caterer to help with the handover, and enjoyed it so much he wanted to stay on. “He’s doing a great job, and our members love him,” Lynne says. “He’s a very personable chap and gets out there and talks to members.” In November, the club hosted the Papatoetoe Invitational snooker tournament in November, which drew some of New Zealand’s best players to play on the newly recovered tables. The 8 ball section won the Champion of Champions tournament this year for the fourth time in a row.

Gerry Lee will be the main attraction on on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. The Four Fathers will return to the club to help to bring in the new year with covers from the 1970s up to current hits. The group played at the club as part of a fundraising event for the local coastguard – “They were amazing, so we’ve invited them back,” says Katrina. The club will open on Christmas Day for a buffet dinner for $65 per person, $30 for children under 12, and free for children under five. Diners will have a choice of ham, beef and lamb, plus assorted seafood platters, vegetables, and salads, then desserts of pavlova, fruit salad, steamed pudding

Waiuku Cosmopolitan Club has brought some flexibility to its entertainment with a new Open Mic Night on the third Friday of each month. Secretary/manager Katrina Barnett says that after a couple of Open Mic nights, there has been a good response from the public, and some good talent spotted. She says the idea is to provide more flexibility in entertainment provided for members, put the club in the public eye, and introduce new people to what the club has to offer. “Anyone can come in and tell a joke, sing a song, we can have a band in, even anyone who just wants to come along and have a jam session. They might have their talent spotted at the club.” The outdoor area has been overhauled over the last couple of months – a paint job, some wall art, hanging planters, a macrocarpa bar leaner, and umbrellas for the uncovered area. New name proves a catalyst for change Karen Phelps A new name and a new look has set Remuera Club (formerly known as the Commerce Club) up for growth, says club manager Anton Coetzee. The previous name didn’t tell people where the club was located or what it did, he says. People didn’t realise the facilities on offer, he says. Since the name change in October, the club has received many positive comments and membership has begun to grow and now has 900 members. The aim is to double membership over the next few years. The name change has been combined with a refreshed look. The women’s toilets have been upgraded, the bar area painted and re-organised to create a more welcoming environment, and the pool tables re-positioned to make more casual seating available.

Indoor-outdoor flow has been created with new doors opening onto a newly refurbished garden area, which Anton predicts will prove a hit in the warmer months. The Remuera Club (at 27-33 Ohinerau St and a new website (www.remueraclub.org.nz)) has a large dance floor, a sports bar with a large screen, and a TAB – recently refurbished with five 54-inch and a 60-inch television. The club also has 12 gaming machines, four full-size snooker tables and three pool tables. The restaurant and lounge have seating for up to 200. A number of fun events are planned – the annual Christmas party on November 25; a party (organised in conjunction with The Company Company) to ring in the new year (it will be aimed at singles but if you’re attached, you can join in the fun and egg the singles on); monthly entertainment and events through 2017.

Junior membership trialled at Tararua Junior membership – which allows young people aspiring to compete in sports to do so with the guidance of parents and senior club members – has been introduced at the Pahiatua-based Tararua Club. The proposal was adopted at this year’s annual meeting; the club has three junior members so far, but has received many enquiries. Club secretary-manager Alan Fulton says the idea came from a member of the darts adjunct, who had been a junior member of another club when she was 12. “So, it is not really something new, but also not something all clubs have. The idea is to introduce junior members to the club environment, mainly to get them involved in a sports adjunct. Some Clubs NZ tournaments have a junior section as part of the event. Junior membership also allows for coaching and guidance from adult sports people in the club.” Junior members at Tararua must have at least one parent who is a club member, and who proposes the prospective member. Juniors must be accompanied by a parent at all times when on club premises. The Tararua committee decided on a minimum age of 12, but applications are reviewed individually. Once accepted as a member, a junior must join at least one adjunct. On turning 18, junior members become “ordinary” members of the club. Alan Fulton says the club viewed junior members as helping build a base for young members coming through, and they will be comfortable in the club environment as they become ordinary members. The club, established in 1902, has a membership of around 550. Membership has been growing year on year, he says. Many alterations have been made over the years, and more interior refurbishments are planned for the coming months, he says. Many visitors to the club come in camper vans

and caravans. The local council has a caravan dump station on the site, and campers are allowed to camp in the club’s carparking area for the night. “We are a family-orientated club and members regularly bring their children along for a meal from Aunty Sue’s kitchen, which operates on Tuesday and Friday evenings,” says Alan. “We have a large grassed area, which is popular with kids because it allows them to run around and play outside. The Kids’ Christmas party put on by the club is popular with families. It involves an afternoon of fun, games and activities for members’ children and, of course, a visit from Santa. The club also has an outdoor area, which is home to a barbecue for members’ can use at any time. This is handy for working bees when members give a few hours to tidy up and attend to general-maintenance chores inside and outside, says Alan. “The support of members for these is fantastic and is crucial in keeping costs down in this area for the club’s expenses. A barbecue and a few beverages after each working bee are always provided to members.” In recent years, the club has hosted some of New Zealand’s best players for a Dart Players New Zealand ranking tournament in April. Players from the club have performed well in national clubs darts, pool and bowls, and the club has achieved a lot of success locally with its teams and golf adjunct. Weekly members’ draws, sports events, quiz nights and entertainment evenings are generally well attended. A self-service TAB terminal brings punters in on a regular basis and has proved an asset to the club. Gaming is also popular, and is vital to club growth and maintenance. Donations are made annually to a number of charities that benefit the local community and its young people .

Sue Russell Club Wairarapa secretary/manager Angela O’Neale is looking forward to a busy time as the Mastertonbased club prepares for the seasonal increase in visitor numbers in the district. As part of the cjub’s management restructuring, her role has expanded from secretary to general management. “The executive looked carefully at how we could best position ourselves to grow, given that we are also home for Masterton’s RSA, which has become part of what we now call Club Wairarapa,” Angela says.

Wairarapa readies for onslaught While operating as a separate association, the RSA has fully joined with the Wairarapa Services & Citizens Club. Angela says it has been very positive for both clubs – both have averaged 100 new members in each the last three years. She believes the club’s decision to take over the dining and catering services has been a very good thing. “We have Marilyn McKinlay as our catering manager. She runs the bookings of functions and is fully hands-on in the kitchen; Trent Athow is the chef, and four part-time staff help out as required.” Next year will be a big one as the club celebrates

100 years of operation. Planning is yet to get under way, but Angela says it will be a big occasion. “We hope to see as many former committee and life members of the club as possible as we acknowledge the proud history of the club.” The club’s social committee has taken responsibility for organising entertainment bookings on a week-by-week basis, and this has gone very well, she says. “I think it works really well to have a group in charge of selecting bands to perform as you get a wider input of tastes contributing to decisions. On average, a band performs every second Friday night,

and as you get towards the ‘business-end’ of the year, these days, there’s a band every week.” This year’s annual meeting in mid-October heralded a change in the rules for election to the executive committee, and Angela expects this will bring direct benefits to governance. “Before, all members either stood down or stood for re-election each year. UHutt anglers issue challenge The Upper Hutt Cossie Club fishing adjunct is challenging clubs to compete in an inaugural Clubs Trophy event at next year’s New Zealand Angling and Casting Association national championships. Upper Hutt Cossie will host the event from April 4-8. Head organiser Russell Hockley says the club hopes to attract up to 200 competitors for the event which it is organising with the Wellington Surfcasting & Angling Club and the Feilding Surfcasting Club. The event will also celebrate the NZACA’s 60th anniversary. Fishing boundaries for the championship will run from the southern side of the Patea River entrance to the northern end of Porangahau beach. There are many charter operators around the lower North Island, which should provide numerous fishing opportunities. The casting venue is at the Trentham racecourse where both distance and accuracy courts will be provided.

• A couple of Upper Hutt Cossie-ites claimed first and third prizes in a $25,000 Clubs NZ TAB punting competition. Paul Alderson won the $15,000 top prize and Barry Cuneen the $3000 third prize. For Paul Alderson, his victory was some compensation for being disqualified from second place in a previous competition when he mixed his betting vouchers up and lost his prizemoney for failing to follow correct procedure. “I was very careful this year and didn’t have a drink until near the end of the competition. But I certainly made up for it that night celebrating with some mates into the early hours.” Asked what he was going to do with the prizemoney, he said his wife, Sharon, had already spent it – we think there may be a bit of tongue in the cheek in that comment. A $200 punt on the winner of the last competition race resulted in an $800 collect for Paul which took his total winnings to $1585, $300 ahead of the second-placed punter from the Woolston Club, in Christchurch. At one stage Barry Cuneen had just $4 left, but slowly built his winnings up and a $700 collect on the last race sealed his thirdplace spot ssss.

Porirua’s revamped card/gaming area ‘simply stunning’ Sue Russell “I’m a juggler”, is how Lisa Beighton describes her role as manager of the Porirua Club. “You look at club life from a daily perspective and it is often about juggling resources, the needs/wants of the many groups that operate within its walls, and making the best decisions to achieve the greatest good,” she says. She believes the club is thriving and achieving its primary objectives – to be a community resource, and an energised and inviting space for its members. How these aims are achieved demands constant review of operations and services. “It’s about doing what we do every day better. Membership services, communication and increasing benefits to our members have been a real focus for me,” says Lisa. “We try to define ourselves as a hospitality hub. Striving for continual improvement is what makes a club really thrive.” Just finished is a major refurbishment of the club’s card and gaming area. Lisa says the finished area is simply stunning and has exceeded herFrom expectations. page 20 The result is a safe, inviting environment that members enjoy being in, she says. “Shortly we are looking to make plans for better use of the spaces in the club, creating a smaller bistro and sports-club area.” Lisa says this will give members a feeling of a more intimate space and being together, rather

than spread out. The club’s main lounge will still be available for big nights. New benefits for members include access to WIFI, phone/computer charging stations, and the use of modern technologies when it comes to gaming, POS and membership draws. To page 21 “We’re also looking at forming strategic partnerships within the community, which will provide our members with savings benefits because they belong to our club.” The club has about 3600 members and Lisa says growth has been tracking at 5 per cent, a figure she is very pleased with. She says a significant reason for this growth is the commitment towards maintenance and keeping facilities up to scratch. The relationship between governance and management is also central to the club’s success, she says. “The executive committee governs well, setting clear goals and budgets and working with

management to find the best way to achieve these outcomes. My experience of the clubs industry is that often they don’t work out how to do this well and it inhibits growth.” The club has maintained its record of making the the finals of the Porirua Business Awards each year it has entered (five times). It has received an award in each of the last three years.

The club’s sports awards night on November 26 involves the 22 sporting adjuncts, and “a really good night of fun and celebration”, she says. The traditional Christmas party for kids will be followed by the adult version where a “naughty Santa” will entertain. The club will also host lots of local work functions and plans to see in the New Year in style.

Eventually it took just one hand of heads-up to decide the champion, and only a few thousand chips separated the stacks. Garrity Caine was a very close second and took home $4000. This was the third PokerHQ UPW staged at the Petone WMC over Labour weekend. Again it sold out well ahead of time, supporting its claim to be New Zealand’s best poker event outside the casinos. In the Deep Stack Bounty on the Saturday, 200 players vied for the bounties placed on each of their heads. The game was fast paced and cut-throat with the final table emerging after 11 hours and yet another hour to determine a winner. Ethan Mueller (Hamilton) collected a lot of bounties to go with his first prize, and proved that a bit of dedication goes a long way – he waited 45 minutes in the morning in the hope someone wouldn’t make the start time. The big poker event coincided with the club’s first Labour weekend open 8 ball tournament, staged in association with Coopers Auto Company. It attracted 60 competitors, and was won by Dean Garnett (Taradale Club).

David Linton, manager and secretary for the last 17 years, says it is heartening to see membership reach 1200. “A gliding club has opened in town and this has brought new members to our doorstep,” he says. Inside, the club has three pool and two snooker tables and 10 dartboards, and full TAB facilities for members, visitors and guests to enjoy, along with indoor and outdoor bowling adjuncts, golf, fishing and a social 60s club. Under-18-year-olds can join the club through membership of a sports adjunct The single-level building has capacity to hold 800. David says a strong executive committee of eight includes both the president and vice-president. Three trustees, all former presidents, also attend meetings, largely in an advisory capacity. “It is a good model because the trustees hold the history of the club and provide the executive with advice.” The WMC was founded in 1877 and holds a Queen’s Charter. Greytown, was New Zealand’s first inland town, and the club holds the founding document. Its walls showcase the town’s history in with photo murals of early Southern Wairarapa life. “They really link the club to the founding of this area and are of great interest to visitors and those researching the history,” says David.

Located right in town at 120 Main St, the club opens at 11am Monday to Friday, and 10.30am weekends. Dinner is served in the restaurant fro 5pm to 8pm on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays..

‘As long as it’s wild, it qualifies’, according to Raetihi rules Sue Russell Hunters galore are expected at Raetihi Cosmopolitan for the second edition of the club’s Wild Food Challenge on January 21. More than 300 adventurous hunters and gatherers turned up for the first contest last January, and it proved a real winner. “As long as the food is wild, it could be anything from gathering berries to hunting game, or everything in between,” says club secretary-manager Lindsay Campbell. “We want to encourage a wide array of competitors, so we keep the parameters very broad; as long as it’s wild, it qualifies.” Competitors are expected to descend on the club

from all parts;it should be a day not to be missed. Lindsay, who has been in the role for the past 20 months, says he’s pleased to see a steady flow of new members joining monthly – an indication that the club’s core health is strong. “We’ve made a point of increasing the awareness of the club as a venue to the community. We have great spaces and want to be seen as a community facility.” Given its proximity the southern slopes of Ruapehu’s Whakapapa and Turoa skifields, it’s not surprising the club has a lot of members who visit over winter. It becomes the socialising ‘home-base’ for the season with its pool and snooker tables, dartboards and 12 gaming machines very popular.

“We are very strong in 8 ball and the section is part of a tournament involving competition with other clubs in the area,” says Lindsay. “We also have a keen shooting adjunct and an outdoor bowling club.” The gaming machines have been upgraded over the last few years, and the TAB pod is the only such facility in Raetihi. The club operates out of a Lockwood building, with the spoils of members’ hunting excursions adorning the walls. Part of the strength of the club is its committee which works hard and well, he says. A full-timer deals with administration, and the bar is manned by five duty stewards. “Our dining room is open Friday and Saturday,” says Lindsay. “Our menu options suit the style of the

club and are popular with locals and visitors.” Plans include upgrading the look of the dining room. Lindsay describes the club as ‘rugby mad’, so much so it sponsors the Wanganui rugby team. Families are encouraged to come to the club and enjoy the facilities. While there is not a separate junior membership for those under 18, Lindsay sees encouraging families to feel at home as key. “As with many clubs in small settlements, we are the hub for socialising. We always look forward to families visiting and enjoying what Raetihi Cossie has to offer.” The club is open from 11am until late from Thursday to Saturday, and from 2pm other days.

Ohakune tries new short-term option The Ohakune Club draped in its winter coating of snow.

Sue Russell Steve Lighton says one aspect of his job as manager/ secretary at the Ohakune Club is meeting a diverse range of people. “Clubs generally have great people involved – they are positive and want to see their club progress. They feel a sense of pride and ownership in helping create an environment that will see the club thrive. You don’t get that sort of relationship in pubs.” The Ohakune Club has a membership of just over 200, a drop in numbers since the last time Steve worked at the club back in 2013. Traditionally winter has been the predominant earning season given the club’s location on the Central Plateau, but Steve says that in the last two years there has been a shift in interest by visitors in summer to pursue activities such as trail-biking, fishing and tramping the mountain trails. Seeing an opportunity to attract more members,

the club has changed its constitution to include a restricted membership. “We have traditionally had a seasonal membership category for those here to ski during winter, but now we have ‘restricted membership’ for someone in town just for the weekend. Ohakune has a lot of people passing through, and the new membership entitles them to come and enjoy our facilities even for a short time.” says Steve. He hopes those who join this way will, in time,

‘Transformation’ now on fast-track A rise in the National Service Club’s membership base has led to increase in the use of club facilities, says club manager Shelly McGhie.. “Our adjuncts are all active in helping provide a diverse social environment for all members,” she says. “Interest groups such as wine club and punters’ club, are well led with a new addition of a travel club this year.” The club has recently undertaken a full earthquake report and areas that need to be strengthened have been identified. The building committee has been working with structural engineers and an architectural designer on an extension of around 200 square metres, which would transform the restaurant into a multi-function restaurant/function centre. “It is felt that instead of spending a lot of money

moving parts of the club around, we would be better to spend money on an extension, creating more space and easing the use of the current bowls/darts/ function area,” says Shelly. “In the medium term, the snooker, pool, TAB and smoking areas would stay as at present, with the offices and front entrance retained in their current positions.” She says the committee originally saw this as a five to 10-year project, but is now aiming for completion by 2020, the club’s centenary year. The purchase of adjoining land by previous committees , has given the club the ability to proceed. The outdoor, grass bowling green has also been upgraded after a few years of troubles. The new green, which will have some of the best facilities in the Bay, should be ready to bowl on by Christmas.

become full or seasonal members. He and the committee talked to Clubs New Zealand about the idea: “Clubs NZ is an awesome organisation and advised us to call a special meeting to discuss the proposal with our members to ensure the changes were done correctly.” The Ohakune Club’s kitchen operates on a lease arrangement. This ends at the conclusion of the ski season and Steve is negotiating with a local resident chef to work for through until next ski season. The dining room is open Wednesday through Saturday, but Steve is keen to see that extended to Sunday.

The two-storey club has an open main lounge area with two snooker and pool tables, seven gaming machines and restaurant; upstairs is a bar and restaurant, which the club hires out for functions. Each September Ohakune Club supports a Snow Queen event where winter-themed wearable art is on show, worn by local children. “It’s awesome,” says Steve. “They transform the upstairs space into a winter wonderland and it’s great for the local area kids to get involved with it.” Children are not overlooked at Christmas time either. Club members put on a Christmas party, for children and grand-children of members, with the club funding a gift for each child. Steve’s main concerns are to bring the club up to fire-compliance standards and refurbish it. “We’re on a slow progression to revitalise the club, which is 42 years old. It is a focal point for the community of this nice rural town and for the many visitors who enjoy the town and surrounds.”

Merger an exemplar for doing it right Sue Russell Despite the natural concerns and anxiety that attaches itself to a merger of two clubs, especially when one is a much respected RSA carrying a long history in a town, the Citizens RSA Te Puke Club has proved that with the right will and consideration, the creation of a new club can be hugely positive. Gus Cantlon, president of the new Citizens RSA Te Puke Club, says the merger has revitalised the former Te Puke RSA and added significantly to the culture of the former Citizens’ Club. “Talks about this merger have gone on for many years. The RSA was in decline as many smaller provincial RSA clubs find themselves these days, and the Citizens’ Club attitude was very much that the RSA should continue. We put it to them that it was a relocation of their club, not an ending of it.” A huge positive of the merger is that the new club is open seven days a week, something the former Te Puke RSA could not afford to do in recent years. “It has revitalised their indoor-bowls activity immensely and, as members of Citizens RSA Te Puke, they and their friends and guests have access to all facilities,” Gus says. As part of the process, a special ceremony was held at the RSA’s old premises – 60 members gathered to acknowledge the passing of an era. However, there was never a closing; instead, there was a formal reopening just down the road.

Such has been the success of the merger fellow committee members have been approached by other RSAs looking at finding a way to preserve their clubs. An indicator of the move’s success is the makeup of the executive, says Gus. Election results for the new executive reflected the merger of two clubs – an excellent outcome, he says. “We very much wanted to see at governance level a reflection of the fact that we were two clubs that have successfully joined. This we have achieved through the natural election process.” Gus says the national RSA organisation was somewhat reticent about the merger, and while discussions between the national body and those steering the merger were at times challenging, there was never a thought a happy outcome would not be achieved. “We hope that that what our club offers – a very welcoming environment, a variety of activities, facilities geared towards younger members, their families and guests – will attract the younger cohort of returned servicemen and women through our doors. This issue is one of national significance for RSAs.” He says the club is open every day, and has extremely good facilities for all members, including a restaurant with lunches and dinners from Wednesday to Sunday. “You’ll feel very welcome at our club. Since opening in February this year under our new name and identity, our membership has continued to grow and our future looks very bright.”

Kelly Deeks The Papanui Club has made history by winning a Hospitality New Zealand Award for Excellence – the first time a club has achieved. The award,. announced in October, was for the best new/redeveloped bar/ restaurant. And Papanui general manager Keith Ballantyne believes it is a marker for “new clubs of the future”. . “The judges said we have changed the face of clubs in New Zealand. They could be forgiven for believing it isn’t a club. “Since we opened in late January, our membership has grown from 4700 to 12,500. We hoped the new facility would bring an increase in membership, but we never expected it to increase that much.” Papanui’s success goes back to when the club was rebuilt in 2015. The board decided it was time to change the game and create a facility that could provide people with the type of experience expected in today’s hospitality environment. “All old clubs were working to a formula that wasn’t working anymore, so we’ve changed the game completely,” says Keith. “The greatest reaction we want from people is ‘Is this a club ’.” Turnover in The Papanui restaurant has tripled, and staff numbers have soared from 25 to 87 at the last count; The Papanui is now Lion Breweries’ largest single-premise account-holder. “Our operation is now very much 50/50 food and beverage,” Keith says. “Most old clubs’ turnover would be a majority alcohol. Today, you’ve got to have food as well.” The Papanui is now providing three separate areas

with food offerings and three bars, all connected by an outdoor courtyard. The new Embers restaurant offers an Argentinian style of cooking and dining experience, enhanced by

a cosy atmosphere. Diners watch as their meals are handcrafted. The meals are designed to be shared, which helps create a sociable, family-bonding and interactive dining experience.

Centre stage in Embers is a new-to-New Zealand fire-pit. With connections to Argentine cooking, the Maori hangi, and the New Zealand family barbecue, it is a conversation-starter, says Keith. The Carvery serves modern cuisine using fresh, local ingredients, and has a full bar selection. Diners also have views of the local entertainment in the courtyard. Kaiapoi bowlers celebrate centenary Kelly Deeks Kaiapoi Club’s outdoor bowls section celebrated its centenary with a 100th-anniversary bowls tournament over Labour weekend. Around 100 players came to play from across New Zealand. During the celebrations, the club displayed the trophy it won this year in the national club championship fours – its first national bowls title. .

The four took immediate charge of the final in Christchurch, picking up five shots on the second end and romping home 24-5 over the Papanui Club opponents.. Kaiapoi Club general manager Warren McFelin says it was a big honour for the Kaiapoi Bowling Club to host the 2016 national fours championship, and the title set the club up for a memorable centennial celebration. night with a mix and mingle, where past members were able to meet current members. On the Saturday night, there was a formal dinner, speeches, and the cutting of the centennial cake by the club’s oldest member. Some of the club’s history had been researched and the results were presented at the celebrations. Warren McFelin says some this history illustrates how times and attitudes have changed. “In 1917, two young bowlers were caught wrestling on the green after an argument, and banned from the club. “In 1923, it was decided the bowling green would be lit by electric lights. Each player would be charged sixpence, and the bowling club would repay the 35 it cost to install the lights over 10 years.” In 1960, the club changed forever when it was decided women would be allowed to join the section. Warren says they have been a hugely important part of the club. Celebrations concluded on the Sunday with a bowls tournament followed by a prizegiving ceremony. Warren says the Kaiapoi Club’s bowling green is regarded as one of the best grass greens in Canterbury. Members have a very busy programme during
