‘Young star’ makes history

Volume 18, Issue 3 2012

Favourite raceday a winner

Upper Hutt Cossie Club staff member Cameron Lock has created history. He is the first club-industry representative to win the food and beverage apprentice title at the Hospitality Standards Institute Modern Apprentice of the Year competition. He receives a two-week trip to the 2013 Melbourne Food and Wine Festival in March, and the opportunity to attend master classes there with international chefs and front-of-house specialists. Food and beverage apprentices who entered the awards were “mystery-shopped” in their workplaces during August to assess their customer service, their wine-matching skills, and their upselling ability. In the second part of the competition – which was held at the National Culinary Fare in Auckland – the finalists had to recommend wines for a threecourse dinner menu, and do a wine evaluation challenge. Angelo Brown, also from the Upper Hutt Cossie Club, was one of the four finalists. “We were thrilled that Angelo was a finalist because he is another rising young star,” says Upper Hutt Cossie manager Dean Candy. Having two finalists in the competition vindicates the resources the club invests in its staff. It has more than 30 staff doing internal and external; training, he says. Cameron Lock joined the Upper Cossie Club staff part-time as a 16-year-old while still at school. Five years later he is working full-time in a variety of roles – including restaurant front-of-house, as a barista, in the bar and in the TAB. “He has immersed himself in the team culture and is always one of the first to put up his hand to learn, recently hosting our weekly trivia quizzes,” says club manager Dean Candy. Upper Hutt Cossie has also become the first winner of new clubs category at the Hospitality Standards Institute Excellence in Training awards, also held in Auckland. The other finalists were Clubs Of Marlborough and the Hamilton WMC. In thanking the HSI for recognising clubs, he acknowledged the efforts of the HSI’s clubs training adviser, Dianne McKellar. Two days later, the club won the hospitality and tourism section at the Hutt Valley Business Awards The Petone WMC and Empire Tavern were the other finalists. Dean Candy says the club values this even more than the HSI award as “was in our own area”.

Armed robbery training leads way on line Clubs New Zealand’s on-line training hub has begun with an armed-robbery-survival-skills course tailored for clubs. The organisation says the course aims to arm staff with knowledge on how to protect themselves and their club members from death, injury and trauma should they become involved in an armed robbery.. The course, which has been produced by Ban Crime Global, costs $69 (including GST) person. It is a prerequisite of occupational health and safety laws. Clubs New Zealand says it will be working with people in the club hospitality industry to create courses covering topics from customer service to governance. The on-line training hub gives staff and members the opportunity to train at times that suit them, and to work at their own pace. To get started, clubs need to register with Clubs New Zealand for access to their training portal.

Scholarships get a lift for 2013 Clubs New Zealand has increased the number of training scholarships on offer for 2013 from four to six. Two $1500 scholarships (instead of one) will now be awarded in each of the club-step-up and clubcareer-starter categories. One $2000 scholarship will be awarded in the club-achiever category and one $2000 scholarship in the club kick-start category. The scholarships aim to identify talent in the industry and provide a helping hand to ensure that

clubs and their employees can reach their training goals. Applications for the scholarships have opened, and will close at 4pm on January 20, 2013. To apply, read the scholarships information page on the Clubs NZ website (www.clubsnz.org.nz/ training/scholarships),then download and complete the relevant application form. Send the completed application form, along with the required supporting documents, to: Clubs New Zealand Scholarships, P.O. Box 11-749, Wellington 6142.

The clubs can then buy training codes as they need them, assign the training courses to their employees, monitor the trainees’ progress, and reconcile their purchases with the Clubs New Zealand invoice. Clubs New Zealand says it intends contacting clubs and help them get set up and into on-line training.

A lot of positives Some competitors at the inaugural Australasian Clubs Games in Queensland next year will face two types of traps. Trap-shooting (left) is one of the four scheduled sports, while the golfers will face plenty of challenges from the sand-traps (below).

Event promises ‘fantastic time at an idyllic location’ A week in September on Australia’s Sunshine Coast. Sound pretty good? Well, that’s when the inaugural Australasian Clubs Games will be staged next year. A multi-sports event of golf, lawn bowls, darts and trap shooting, this carnival will be hosted in the Sunshine Coast regions of Mooloolaba and Maroochydore from September 1-8, 2013. “We have secured the best of sporting venues for you to compete as an individual, as a team, for your club or representing your country,” says event manager Karen French. “This is the ultimate in trans-Tasman rivalry and we invite you to be a part of it.”

As with tournaments of this type, it’s not only about what happens on the sports field, she says. Two social occasions are scheduled to give all participants the opportunity to make new friendships and renew old acquaintances. Accommodation will be a few minutes’ walk to the Mooloolaba surf beach, restaurants and shopping precinct. Because spaces are limited, she urges people to book early. “Clubbies will have a fantastic time competing at their chosen sport as well as having fun in an idyllic location.” Information/package costs: Karen French, 09 4861644; www.clubs-games.com.

As we come to the close of 2012 it’s important to celebrate the positive changes we have seen in the club movement this year. Some of these will come to fruition in 2013. Training is going from strength to strength, with our involvement with HSI, seminars and on-line training putting our organisation in a great position to understand what is required to be truly great in the hospitality industry. Time is at a premium in clubs, so on-line training that can be done at your own pace in your own time was a logical step. The first course is now available for members to access, and I urge clubs to contact National Office and register for the Clubs New Zealand on-line training hub; this will ensure you have full access to new courses as they become available. Our progress in training this year is important as clubs now employ more than 3800 staff. In the new year Clubs NZ will be looking to employ a full-timer to further develop training programmes and other business opportunities. This year we have seen how the power of strength in numbers has allowed our voice to be heard on the many issues facing our industry. Member clubs have also continued to benefit from our collective buying power to ensure their businesses stay economically viable. This has been accentuated by the reciprocalrights relationship all clubs share with one another in drawing members through our doors and boosting profitability around the country. As a collective we are a powerful group. We should remember this and take this thought into 2013 As usual we have focused on supporting member clubs that may have been struggling. The Canterbury Clubs Raceday at Methven was an excellent event enjoyed by 500 club members; it was part-funded

by the money donated to the Canterbury Clubs Earthquake Fund. All clubs that donated can be really proud the day was enjoyed by all. With the Christmas approaching, I appeal to clubs to ensure staff are aware not to serve visitors until they know they are guests of a member or belong to an affiliated club. Five of our clubs were caught recently breaching their licence conditions by selling alcohol to a non-member. It is a timely reminder. Some clubs are not complying with procedures involving disciplinary matters. Contact Gus at National Office to ensure you have the data to comply with the law and ensure your constitution is up to date with visitors and appeal procedures/ The AGM is fast approaching - in Inverargill in March. We look forward to seeing you there. On a positive note, clubs have upped their overall game this year on how they run their businesses and their offering to members. Congratulations. On behalf of the Clubs NZ board, staff and myself, have a safe and enjoyable Christmas with family and friends and let’s look forward to growing the movement and your businesses even more in 2013.

NEWS/OPINION

Time to spell out our difference It has been a busy year for Clubs New Zealand with continued growth in a challenging market. It has been a great year and we have been seen a significant growth in membership as well as an increase in the number of member clubs. This is in a market where hospitality has been squeezed. As a national body, we have been very pleased with our members and the effort they have put in. Head office has been very focused on providing an increased range of services, and value, to members, particularly in the areas of advice, human resources and training. Tis has helped towards the overall growth, and has partly been the reason clubs have been able to continue to do well despite the economic climate. This year has also brought the need to focus on a number of proposed legislative changes which could potentially affect the future of the Club movement including the Alcohol Reform Bill. We made numerous submissions, both written and oral, on the Alcohol Reform Bill, and we are currently waiting for legislative changes to be passed. We are quietly optimistic that if no further changes are raised, clubs will come away greatly unaffected and, in fact, better looked after. Another significant piece of legislation that came out of left field and required an immediate response by the club movement was the Gambling Harm Reduction Bill. As clubs hold licences for around 20% of the electronic gaming machines in the country. it is a significant issue. We fiercely protect gaming machines as part of the entertainment package in a club. We agreed there needed to be some changes particularly around the grant distribution process, but we didn’t believe it needed the heavy-handed approach this bill proposed. We have just completed the formal submission process and we are waiting for the next step.

Chief executive, Clubs New Zealand

The three-yearly problem gambling levy proposal was another key piece of legislation Clubs NZ fought this year. Clubs NZ has been recognised publicly by the Problem Gambling Foundation as the most responsible organisation providing class 4 gaming. The foundation has said we provide a very safe environment for people playing pokies. We believe we need to be separated from others because of our efforts in this area. The issue we have now is whether the Ministry of Health will recognise this so that we can pay a lower levy. We will find out at the start of 2013. I’m optimistic that the issues Clubs NZ has faced this year will set the scene for the future-proofing of the organisation. It’s tough out there now, and clubs have maintained their businesses. We’ve been very successful because we’ve been seen to be strongly going out to bat on the key issues affecting clubs. The focus for the coming year will be on letting the powers that be know the difference between a pub and a club. We’ve been operating under the radar for too long, but these proposed legislative changes are putting pressure on us to ensure people better understand what we do. We are not just organisations that sell alcohol; we are communitybased clubs.

Tokoroa cleans up at 8 ball Matt McInnes turned the Clubs New Zealand national 8 ball champs into something of a personal benefit. After pairing with fellow Tokoroa Club player Phil Wilkinson to win the doubles national title for the second year in a row, Matt McInnes went on to claim the singles title in an entertaining final against Matt Edwards (North Shore Club). “Matt had a hugely successful week and did incredibly well to win both titles given that there were more than 250 participants from all over New Zealand,” says Keri Low, tournament convener and pool committee member of the Cashmere, which hosted the event. Christchurch’s Cashmere Club has hosted both national and South Island 8 ball tournaments several times, and has fine-tuned its management, she says. “We had some fantastic feedback from players and guests after the tournament. One of the things we did a bit differently this year was to put up a grandstand in the hall, which encouraged spectators to stick around for a lot longer. We also had a corporate box upstairs, where sponsors and invited guests could view the action.” The club last hosted the national tournament in 2009; its plans to host the 2011 tournament were scuppered by the Christchurch earthquakes. “It was great to see everyone supporting the tournament back in Christchurch,” says Keri. “A

lot of the competitors from up north used it as an excuse for a South Island holiday.” The week-long event in early October started on the Sunday with two mini-tournaments – one for prizes, and the second for a winner-takes-all cash prize. The tournament proper began with the pairs on the Monday and Tuesday, then the singles running from Wednesday through to the finals on the Saturday. “It was a full-on week, and we were hugely grateful to the regulars at the Cashmere Club,” says Keri. “It’s a big ask to have your club completely overrun for seven days, but everyone just pitched in. The competitors also supported the club’s bar and raffles and we had some great sponsors on board, who really helped to make the tournament the success it was.” Results: Singles: Matt McInnes (Tokoroa Club) 1, Matt Edwards (North Shore Club) 2, semi-finalists, Brad Campbell (Richmond Club), Brent Wells (North Shore Club). Pairs: Matt McInnes/Phil Wilkinson (Tokoroa Club) 1, Mike Herlihy/Les Nailer (North Shore Club) 2, semi-finalists, Des Blair/Glenn Coutts (Cashmere Club), Adam Marlow/Marianne Edwards (Cashmere Club)

Show us your gurnard girls Raglan’s fishing aficonados have come up with a novel and fun way to celebrate the sport and entice females to have a go. The Raglan Club’s fishing section says its Gals ‘n’ Gurnard competition is all about ‘mainstreaming’ fishing and giving it a go. It’s quite simple – any woman can enter ($25 up to December 22, $30 after that), then get out there on January 5 and catch as many and as a big a gurnard as she can. Raglan’s harbour and coastal waters are renowned for their plentiful supply of gurnard, and

they which can be caught in all sorts of ways – from the inner harbour with the “line off the boat” technique, surf-casting off the coastal beach, or over the bar into deeper water. Prizes will be on the line across various categories. The organisers say they are “seriously organising a huge day and, no matter how big or small your catch, is, an excellent day is guaranteed”. Murray first life member at Clubs of Marlborough A 22-year contribution of unbroken administrative service and leadership has been recognised when Murray Mills was awarded life membership of both the Blenheim Workingmen’s Club and Clubs of Marlborough. Murray, who stood down this year after 11 years as Blenheim WMC president, becomes Clubs of Marlborough’s first life member. Murray and Kathryn Mills moved to Blenheim in the mid-1980s, joined the Blenheim WMC soon after, and became active section members. Murray stood unsuccessfully for the committee in 1990, but was elected in 1991. He was on the committee until being elected vicepresident in 1997; in 2001 he was elected president. He won another contested election in 2002 and was not challenged again until 2011, when he was again re-elected. During his time as president the Blenheim WMC amalgamated with the Marlborough Club to trade as Clubs of Marlborough. As Blenheim WMC president, Murray was involved in the wider management and governance of the new Clubs of Marlborough facilities. He was appointed to the project committee, which was formed in 2003 to manage the merger of Marlborough’s three main clubs. The committee met fortnightly, then weekly, as construction of the new building began, and was dissolved in December 2007, three months after the opening of the new facilities. In 2006 a governance committee was formed to oversee the club’s financial arrangements with the bank. Peter Radich chaired the committee and, as president, Murray was appointed to it. The committee reported directly to the bank until being superseded in 2009 by a finance committee. The finance committee – two independent chartered accountants (one appointed by the bank), and the club’s treasurer, with Murray in the chair – reports monthly to the bank. The Clubs of Marlborough facilities include a Marlborough District Council-funded and managed convention centre. The clubs entered into a bodycorporate arrangement with the council in 2009 to oversee the common areas and the cohabitation of two businesses in the complex; Murray represents the two unit titles owned by the clubs, and chairs the body corporate. In proposing Murray Mills for life membership,

Murray and Kathryn Mills after the award of his life membership. Clubs of Marlborough chief executive officer Lee Davis recalled the beginnings of the Clubs of Marlborough project: “I received a phone call from Murray in Gisborne on a Thursday and the following Tuesday in Blenheim, we shook hands. A partnership was formed that would see a project on paper through to fruition. “We would meet informally daily and, as things progressed, particularly once the tenders were in, this increased to three to four times a day. “As the pressure mounted, we did not always agree; but within a day or two, a resolve would be found that was better than the concept originally discussed – and it always came with his full support. “The time Murray gave me one on one was additional to the many meetings. Although some of those meetings attracted nominal honorariums, his work was voluntary and, on many occasions, must have impacted on his business and personal life. “I sincerely believe that without Murray’s tireless efforts, we would not have what we have here today.”

CLUB LIFE – LOWER SOUTH ISLAND

Oamaru Club keen to add to its busy hosting schedule

If riding a penny farthing bicycle is on your bucket list, Oamaru is the place to tick it off.

There are any number of ways to increase club membership. One that often works, assuming the funding can be arranged , is to upgrade the premises. It certainly seems to be working for the Oamaru Club. “Our members are happy,” says club manager Prem Nath. “They like the relaxing atmosphere, the better light , the whole renovation. “The renovation has led to 30 to 40 new members joining each month. They are mixed ages, too. We are encouraging the 18-to-21 group through the style of music, free pool and snooker, and $5 joining fees for any of the nine sports clubs.” During the renovations – which took a year to complete – club operated from its sports hall. It was hard going, says Prem, but the members stayed loyal throughout. The rewards? A new sound system, new carpet, and improved facilities for pool, snooker, gaming, and the restaurant. Sports are strong at Oamaru; outdoor bowls and golf especially. The club has just hosted the Clubs New Zealand outdoor bowls tournament, which pulled in 600 people, and will host next year’s Clubs

NZ national golf and 2014 Clubs NZ South Island darts and euchre tournaments.” The Oamaru Club has also applied to host the 2015 Clubs NZ conference; the host club will be announced at the 2013 conference in Invercargill in March. “We’ve shown we know how to run the transport and accommodation side,” says Prem. “Our restaurant can seat 120 people at a time. We can cater for any occasion.” Oamaru has plenty of accommodation – 700 beds within 10 to 15 minutes of the club, he says. It also has plenty to offer delegates before and after the conference, or in their spare time. As Prem says, “the town is much livelier than many expect”. There’s no shortage of choice – from the nineteenth century architecture in the old part of town, to museums and galleries, to penguin colonies and cheese factories. Plus plenty of restaurants. You can try your hand (more probably, your backside) on a penny-farthing bicycle. Or out of town, you can take a scenic trip up the Waitaki Valley into pinot noir country.

Te Anau fills community role Rural towns often rely on their club for a venue for weddings, 21sts, conferences and the like. The Te Anau Club is pleased to fill this role, and also hosts regular events, such as Rotary, Probus and line dancing. Club manager Neil McDowall reckons Te Anau is a great place to visit, and he is hoping many delegates to the 2013 Clubs New Zealand conference in Invercargill in March will discover this while by extending their stay in Southland by a day or two. The Te Anau area is noted for its fishing, and will host the Clubs NZ South Island fishing contest in 2014. The stunning scenery in this part of the world is, of course, an attraction in itself, says Neil. He has been a motel-owner in the town for

some years, so is well placed to jack up good deals with a cruising company, coach tours and local accommodation for anyone who gets in touch with him. Te Anau’s touristy attractions include glowworm caves, scenic flights, visits to the takaherearing centre, or, for the more adventurous, walks – including the Kepler Track and guided day-walks on the Milford Track. The town is the jumping-off point for trips to Milford and Doubtful sounds The Te Anau Club sits in a garden setting, complete with its own six-hole chip-and-putt golf course for members and visitors. Nearby is the local on the southern shore of Lake Te Anau is the local golf course. This 18-hole course has some of the most spectacular views a golfer is likely to see. Clubs and trundlers can be hired. The Te Anau Club has all the usual facilities clubs have. The bistro restaurant is open from Wednesday to Sunday, but will open on other occasions if Neil is aware of sufficient numbers likely to be there. He promises to do his best to make sure any Clubs NZ conference delegates who decide to include Te Anau in their conference schedule have a thoroughly memorable time.

Southerners gear up for conference Get on the job and book your accommodation now for next year’s Clubs New Zealand conference/annual meeting in Invercargill. That’s the word from Kevin Gray, manager of the Invercargill Workingmen’s Club, which is organising and running the March 2224 event. “There is plenty of accommodation,” he says, “but I suggest you get your committees organised and don’t leave it till the last moment. The longer you leave it, the further away from the conference venue you will be.” The conference organisers have put together an accommodation guide, complete with a street map, to help people organise their bookings. A package is being sent to clubs outlining accommodation options and links through the Clubs New Zealand and Invercargill WMC websites to Lakers House of Travel, which is doing accommodation and flight bookings for the conference. Lakers can also book trips. Affiliated club members who drive mobile homes can be accommodated in the club’s carpark during

the evenings, but not during conference times when parking will be at a premium. “Any other time no problem, you are most welcome,” says Kevin. And, he reminds everyone that, provided the weather co-operates, it will be oyster season. So bring your gout pills with you. For those driving south or taking a few extra days to explore the winterless south, there are plenty of places to see and things to do within easy driving times of Invercargill, he says. He says planning for the conference is well under way and club members are looking forward to seeing everybody there. “The Invercargill WMC provides a great range of facilities for its members and guests, including a very popular restaurant, open for lunch Monday– Friday, noon-1.30pm, for dinner Thursday–Sunday, from 5.30pm, and lunch Sunday, noon–2pm. “With capacity of up to 1000 people in our upstairs Corinthian Conventions Centre, we are also capable of hosting functions and events.”

Katherine ‘sort of fell into job’ at oasis with a view ‘Heart of the Desert’, a 1951 book by James Parcell, brings to life the early days of the CromwellBannockburn region. It seems an appropriate name as well, for a local watering hole, the Cromwell Town and Country Club. The ‘T and C’ sits on the south side of Cromwell, above Lake Dunstan, looking over towards Bannockburn and the ochre-coloured Carrick range beyond. Across the lake, at Cornish Point, vineyards suggest the possibility of a pinot noir, thanks very much. Schist tors atop the Carricks hint at the flinty notes of a fine Central chardonnay. The brilliant blue sky and golden tussocks bring a Speights label to mind. If, in the heart of a desert, you may find an oasis, and the chance of a drink, then this club is definitely a place to call into. Secretary manager Katherine Cowie reckons she sort of fell into her job. After 13 years in hospitality further north, she began work behind the club’s bar in December 2011. When the manager left early this year, Katherine was asked if she would like the job in April. She officially began the role in July. “Being in a club is totally different,” she says. Some things drive her crazy, and others are great; which makes it just like any other job, really. “It’s a good place to work. It has a nice atmosphere. A happy medium, you might say.” She says she has a good committee to work with, and likes the patrons and the camaraderie that clubs produce. There are 1200 members on the books, but many are out-of-towners. A lot of Dunedin’s citizens come to Cromwell to their cribs, and many are members.

It’s the only place in town you can get a million-dollar view, great company and cheap, cold beer.

PHOTOS Left: The view that all the fuss is about – Lake Dunstan from the Cromwell Town & Country Club. Below: Anticlockwise from top right – the club entrance; the bar; two images of members relaxing. “I think people come here for the view – it’s the only place in town you can get a million-dollar view, great company, and cheap cold beer, with a free smile of course.” Many clubs have strong adjuncts. Cromwell is not one of those; it has only a bowls club, as a legacy from its former manager. Katherine is thinking about extending this to provide more reasons for people to join. The club is hosting a wood chopping event on December 27, and a fishing competition on January 2. Information: cromwelltc@xtra.co.nz Through the year, the restaurant is open from Thursday to Saturday. Over the Christmas period, when Central is awash with holidaymakers, it opens right through the week. The events calendar on the Cromwell website shows so many possibilities, from country music hoe-downs, through triathlons and horse races, to saloon car racing and cherry spitting competitions, that the club should become the go-to place for preparing beforehand or relaxing afterwards Phone (03) 249-7113 • Fax (03)249-8288 cnr Pop Andrew Drive & Jackson St PO Box 57, Te Anau, Fiordland Email: office@teanauclub.org.nz www.teanauclub.co.nz

Gisborne Cossie gets a facelift for Christmas The Gisborne Cosmopolitan Club is getting a facelift leading into the holiday season. Members are getting a new, secure carpark; the building is getting a new exterior paint job; the barbecue area and the children’s playground are getting a spruce-up. The club is also buying a bouncy castle to use at its own events and to hire out for children’s birthday parties and special occasions. Work on the new carpark started in November, and includes new tarsealing and a metalled driveway, secure fencing, and sensor flood-lighting. The carpark will be locked overnight. Members will be to leave their cars and their keys at the club, catch the courtesy coach home, and return for their car and keys the following day. The new carpark is behind the old panelbeating building the club about 18 months ago. A jelly wrestling at the end of the November began the festive-season entertainment. Eddie Low

and Kevin Greaves are next, playing at the club on December 8. Big-name entertainers, such as Dennis Marsh, who is returning to the club to release his new album, and the Howard Morrison Junior Trio, plus some new bands, will feature in on the club’s everyFriday entertainment nights in the new year. The club will hold its children’s Christmas party on December 9. The aim is to build on last year when a similar event was highly successful – 160 children were there. This year the kids will be treated to a sausage sizzle, a bag of lollies, drinks, and plenty of entertainment – such as a bubble machine, a disco, face painting, a clown who will be making balloon animals, and, of course, the club’s new bouncy castle. Special guest Santa will be handing out gifts and having photos with kids.

Members will be given a few special treats over the summer holidays, as well as the regular Christmas special membership draws. Gisborne Cossie has seven adjuncts – indoor bowls; outdoor bowls; motorcycle; darts; snooker; fishing; 8 ball. All of them are very active, both within the club and beyond, with tournaments and trips.

The pokies room is stacked with 18 machines; a new game, Goldfever 2, was installed this year, and a new 10-game machine was due to arrive towards the end of November. The club is involved in a couple of major sponsorships – the Gisborne Speedway, and the Gisborne Tairawhiti rugby-league team.

Talented volunteers play big part in Taradale RSA renovations A huge clubroom makeover that took more than 12 months is nearing completion at the Taradale and Districts RSA Club. It’s part of rebranding and upgrading of RSA clubrooms around the country New Zealand in a bid to attract members. Taradale & Districts RSA manager Ricky Allen says the task has been made possible by team effort among the club’s 2500 members. Many have willingly lent their varied talents to the renovations. He says the club’s strategic planning committee began discussing the renovations in June last year; the aim was to improve the experience for members, and to gather new members. To begin with, the committee wasn’t sure what direction to take, he says. Among other options, the committee looked at merging, re-siting, enlarging. “It didn’t take us long to realise that our club is in a good position geographically for growth, we are basically debt free, we have the facilities, we have active and growing adjuncts, and the interest in making our club relative to its present membership. With an upgrade, we knew we would be attractive to new members.” The committee came up with a tag line – ‘Embracing our heritage, securing our future’ – to reflect the club’s intention to continue doing what

it has always done in a professional manner, while very much concentrating on the needs of prospective members. The club remained during the renovations, which, Ricky says, was something of a miracle, and thanks to the contractors working on the project. “All the contractors were so good, they blended in to the club very well,” he says. “On Thursdays we have housie which is sacred, and the contractors were not allowed to be there. So, every Thursday they would go to another job.” The contractors included colour consultant Amanda Callinicos which helped to transform the clubrooms by replacing dark and heavy colours with light greys and browns to complement the new RSA branding and create a spacious feel within the club. Heavy curtains have been replaced with venetian blinds, prompting one member to comment on how nice the new windows were. “They’re actually the same windows, they just look so much nicer now,” Ricky says. The sports area, the main lounge, the foyer, and the restaurant were all repainted and recarpeted, and the furniture recovered and powder-coated to coordinate with the new colour scheme. 30s Up Club: night out, new friends – and love? The Hibernian Club of Hastings is providing the district’s younger population with an alternative option to have a night out, meet new people, – and, possibly, find love. The Hibernian 30s Up Club held its first dance party in July,. It was the Hibernian Club entertainment committee’s response to a long-standing local complaint there was nowhere to go to meet new people once you hit the age of 30. Word has spread about the Hibernian 30s Up – on tradio, in local newspapers and club newsletters, by word of mouth, and its own Facebook page. About 100 people turned up for the club’s first night, and it was such a success it has met monthly since. Hibernian Club secretary manager Garry Williams says a lot of single people in Hawke’s Bay have found it hard to meet new people. “A lot of people are very grateful for what we’re doing,” he says. “We provide a safe environment, good entertainment, and club prices. Everyone is welcome to come; those who aren’t members can be signed in as a member’s guest.” Local DJ Forgetful Lucy is a regular at the 30s Up Club, providing the music. “Taken” partygoers are given a wristband to wear on the night, so the singles are easily identifiable. The Hibernian Club has a new caterer, Mary Leefe. She has been well received by members and restaurant turnover has almost tripled from last year. Garry Williams says she provides good, honest food at decent prices, with most meals under $20 and available from Tuesdays to Sundays. The restaurant also caters for functions, such as weddings and birthdays, at the club, and a Rotary club meets there weekly. It has a $60 buffet lunch on Christmas Day. The club has three rooms that host functions, meetings, school balls and prizegivings, and the restaurant can be booked for special occasions. The Hibernian Club has a number of sporting adjuncts and hosts a variety of activities and classes, including zumba, tai chi, and line dancing. Members’ Day (December 9) will give members the chance to get together and enjoy a free lunch, entertainment, and games.

Outhouse to full house The Wairoa Club has completed a puzzle with the arrival of local identity John Woon at the helm of the restaurant. He has transformed both the restaurant’s reputation and the popularity of the northern Hawke’s Bay club. Wairoa Club secretary manager Quintin Baty says hiring John Woon to run the restaurant is the best thing the club has done in the 12 years he has been manager. “He is the final piece of the puzzle,” says Quintin Baty. “We’re now picking up new members. Nonmembers come down to have dinner, think it’s wonderful, and decide to join the club.” John Woon is a Wairoa identity. He owned the town’s fish-and-chip shop for 10 years until 2005. He was cooking at the Sunset Point Bar and Bistro, at Mahia, before taking over the club restaurant in February. His business partner in the venture is Anne Vette, who also has a food background – she used to run Mayo’s Takeaway, next to the Clyde Hotel in the main street of Wairoa. The club restaurant has been renovated over the past four years...new paint and carpet in the eating area, new flooring, new dishwasher, and new ovens in the kitchen. Quintin Baty says that when Woon and Vette started, the restaurant was opening at 5.30pm Thursdays to Saturdays. “For the first three weeks the phone would ring off the hook from 3pm with people booking in for dinner,” he says. “John’s first days with us were all full houses. We were turning customers away, so we decided to add an extra day and open the restaurant on Sundays as well.” He says restaurant guests have been rapt with the new restaurant, with the food, and with the service. While the level of reservations speaks for itself, he reports that the club has also been receiving a lot of feedback. Quintin reckons the menu is a crowd-winner... good basic clubbie-type food at reasonable prices, plus Woon’s famous fish and chips, combined with a friendly smile and service. It’s now advisable to book to guarantee a spot, he says. Non-members are welcome to dine and buy nonalcoholic drinks, however, the club is permitted to sell alcohol only to Wairoa Club members, members of other affiliated clubs, and guests of Wairoa members.

Happy trio: Wairoa Club manager Quintin Baty (back) reckons that hiring Anne Vette (front) and John Woon (centre) to run the club restaurant is the best decision the club has made in the 12 years he has been there. The quality of the food and service is attracting people to the club and helping it recruit new members.

Strong sporting flavour at National Service Club Hastings’ National Service Club and its golf adjunct will host the 2014 Clubs New Zealand national men’s pairs golf (Pen Hawkins Rosebowl) tournament. The tournament will be played at the Hawke’s Bay golf course. with the National Service Club providing meals and entertainment for 200-250 golfers. Also on a sporting note, three-time world champion softball pitcher Chubb Tangaroa this year joined former Hawke’s Bay pitcher Owen Walford in the International Softball Federation’s Hall of Fame. Both are National Service Club members. The club has recently upgraded its function room with soundproofing to allow for more private functions – it’s a very rugby-oriented club and can become quite rowdy during All Blacks games.

The National Service Club has several sporting adjuncts, including darts, indoor and outdoor bowls, golf, and pigeon racing. The club has excellent facilities for outdoor bowls, and the committee is looking forward to continued improvement in the hope of having one of the best greens in Hawke’s Bay. The National Service Club began around 1919 with a group of returned servicemen from World War 1 looking for a place for companionship and to socialise with a smoke and a pint of their favourite tipple. The name of the first president, Sir Andrew Russell, appears at the top of the honours board. In 1934 the club opened its outdoor bowling club and soon had a membership of 100. New members

wanting to join had to wait for a vacancy, sometimes three years, before they were accepted. Sundays were club days, with 50 or so members participating, a number of members away at other clubs, centre champs or by invitation. A number of members, including females, have won centre championships in bowls. Women have been able to apply for membership to the mother club since the early 1990s, when the constitution was amended. Until the early 1980s the club maintained an excellent bank balance, but the mother club removed the bar and left the club broke. A benefactor provided the bowls club with an inretest-free loan of a considerable amount of money to rebuild.

onehunga rSa ups its games

it pays to get in early...the bay of islands Swordfish club certainly proved this old adage when it claimed dress-circle spots for its clubhouses at russell (above) and Paihia (below).

The entertainment options have just got better at the Onehunga RSA. The club has refreshed its gaming room, and now has two new machines and two new game-exchangers. There are also six new Pot Black pool tables in the downstairs poolroom. Manager Rona McKenzie says the RSA aims to provide leisure activities to cater for a wide group of people. The lounge is the epicentre of the club, with most activities only a few steps away. The club offers opportunities for a quiet drink with family or friends in an air conditioned room, meals and sporting activities, she says. “We recognise that not everybody feels like an alcoholic beverage on arrival. We have coffee and tea available for a nominal charge as well as a wide range of non-alcohol refreshments, at all times.” She says the objective is to create a friendly atmosphere where professionally trained staff serves with a smile to make members, their guests and affiliated members feel welcome and comfortable.

Swordies hold prime possies on bay of islands waterfront If the Bay of Islands is your base for your next holiday, make sure you enjoy the facilities of the historic Bay of Islands Swordfish Club’s waterfront clubhouses in Russell and Paihia. Both clubhouses open from 4pm daily, serve bistro meals and offer club pricing for your drinks. All chartered-club members welcome. Both of them enjoy prime views of the bay – no matter how long you sit out on the decks, you won’t get tired of the outlook. While you’re there, have a look at the mounted gamefish and memorabilia as well, or sit out on the decks and enjoy the views. And both clubhouses are family friendly, with areas for children to play and be entertained.

The club can arrange a fishing trip in the bay. Most of Bay of Islands skippers are club members, and you can be put you in touch with a skipper to suit what you want to do. Have a go at targeting snapper, super-strong kingis, or have a crack at some of the world’s biggest striped marlin. If you’re into diving, dive charters and guides can take you to some spectacular sights. Golfers can enjoy the Waitangi golf course just up the road where the greens meet the sea. If you’re with a group of friends, call the club and organise a group booking. The chefs can come up with food platters and options for larger groups.

The main lounge bar is the entertainment hub with something different happening every day or night of the week. Activities are promoted through the club newsletter, noticeboards, word of mouth, and at reception and the website, which is updated regularly. Membership has been increasing, and members can join for 2013 for $30. Rona mentions one of the benefits members receive. “Any member can join our Warriors section, which makes them eligible to go in a draw to win a ticket to the NRL final. There are six tickets to be won – the prize includes return flights, accommodation for three nights and match ticket.” She says the Onehunga RSA is “a club of fun, entertainment and activities for everyone of all ages, where “really reasonably priced food and beverages” make for an economical night out. Local entertainment and international shows will feature regularly through 2013.”

What have these six onehunga rSa members got in common? how about a return flight//three nights of accommodation/match ticket trip to see the Storm deal to the bulldogs in the 2012 nrl grand final in Sydney? all they had to do was join the club’s Warriors section – which put them in the draw for the big prize.

budget goes a long way at Glen eden If you’re after a good night out on a budget, the Glen Eden RSA is the place to go, according to secretarymanager James Pattullo. The club specialises in providing meals and entertainment that are kind on your wallet. “it’s probably the cheapest place around to come for a meal, drink and entertainment all at one venue,” he says. Here’s the deal: $7 lunches Tuesday to Saturday with a choice of six dishes, and $3 desserts; an early-bird (5-6pm) dinner for $10; live entertainment every Friday night, and karaoke most Saturday nights; two new, big-screen televisions; a selfservice TAB terminal. The Glen Eden RSA has some very active and successful groups, says James. Around 45 members take part in the annual fishing competition on Kawau Island in November. Both the pool and darts groups are strong – seven of the darts group are heading to Australia next year for a trans-Tasman competition. The club also stages family-type events – the children’s Christmas party (December 1 this year) with entertainment, presents and food; the annual club picnic in late February/early March at Cornwallis Beach with games, races, a sausage sizzle and drinks provided by the RSA. A buffet lunch at the club on Christmas Day will enable members to enjoy the day together. And, on New Year’s Eve, members can rock into 2013 to Retro Vibe performing hits from the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s. And right now is the time to join, says James

Howick warms to $1m makeover A near-$1m refurbishment over the last 12 months has given the Howick Club a contemporary feel, says general manager Phil Saul. The club foyer and reception area has been completely remodelled. The sports bar and lounge/ function areas have new lighting and décor, which gives an airy, spacious feel, he says. The kitchen has been built with the latest equipment, while the restaurant décor has been changed to make for a more modern, relaxing atmosphere. Phil says feedback on the renovations has been overwhelmingly positive, and membership has risen by about 25%. “Everyone’s raving about it. We break the mould in that we’re not an old fashioned club. We’re always looking for innovative things to do that will attract people into the club.”

Its setting in two hectares of grounds gives the Howick Club a relaxing countryside atmosphere. Its membership base of over 3000 is drawn mainly from the Howick and Pakuranga areas of Manukau City. The landscaped grounds are also a focal point for the club and its activities. A Big Boys’ Toys day there saw the club set up trucks, boats and hot rods on site. For the last 20 years, the club has run a popular, fireworks display, which has become a a big deal for the local community. Phil Saul says a lot of top-notch acts – such as Dave Dobbyn and The Feelers – have also played at the club. Many events are planned over the ChristmasNew Year holiday season. Right through summer live bands will play on the patio deck, allowing members can enjoy the long summer days and nights.

refurbishment and redecoration has brought a ‘contemporary and airy spacious feel’ to the howick club, says general manager Phil Saul.

‘We love to share our club and facilities with other clubs, and we hope that over summer, members from other clubs will pay us a visit.’ – Guy Mawson, operations manager, kamo club.

catering changes ‘go down a treat’ at Papatoetoe cossie kamo keen to share your holiday Significant changes to the Papatoetoe Cosmopolitan Club’s catering have been well received by members, says club manager Lynne Smith. The changes have brought in new members as well as members who hadn’t been inside the club doors in a while, she says. Further changes are planned for next year. The sports bar will be renovated, a new gaming room will be built, and the TAB will be moved to make room for the bistro to have a dining area. “We are looking towards the future, and changing the club to what our members want today,” says Lynne. The new caterer has revitalised the menu with an emphasis on fresh, in-season produce. This has gone hand in hand with refreshing the restaurant interior décor to give a lighter, brighter atmosphere. The restaurant serves buffets and an a la carte menu, and the club has been holding themed buffets. For example, a Halloween buffet included Sweet Revenge desserts. American and Hawaiianthemed buffets which have gone down a treat, says Lynne. “The ribs from the American buffet were so

outstanding they have now been put on our regular menu by popular demand,” says Lynne. Brunch, introduced from 10am on Sundays, has proved popular too, with a buffet of fresh fruit, pastries, hash browns, eggs and bacon among other breakfast goodies. The club’s bistro serves a bar snack menu. Pizzas have been introduced – thin-crust pizzas served up in a variety of flavours. including smoked chicken and meat lovers. The Christmas buffet and dance, on December. 15 this year, is a great place for local businesses to hold their work Christmas function, she says. “It’s perfect for smaller businesses that perhaps can’t afford a big Christmas do. This way they can all come to the club and enjoy the feast as well as a live band.” The New Years’ bash will involve a live band (The D’Starlights), which will play covers from the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s. There will also be a giveaway on the night – the prize remains a surprise, although Lynne hints it will be just as good as last year $500 worth of travel vouchers.

If you’re heading north over summer, the Kamo Club would love to see you. The club is open every day and is just off the Kamo bypass as you head north out of Whangarei. Kamo was, of course the venue for the 2012 Clubs New Zealand conference and AGM which showcased the club’s restaurant, main lounge with dance floor, main bar, lower bar, TAB and five pool tables and four snooker tables. The club also has an off-licence. Live entertainment is planned for every Friday and Saturday night through November and December. A a Christmas Eve will have live entertainment by local performer Rick Cozens and a Christmas buffet. Members can see in the new year in with live band Inertia and a New Year buffet spread. The restaurant is open nights Wednesday to Sunday

with bar snacks, including favourites such as toasted sandwiches, pizzas and pies, available any time. Kamo has around 1500 members, and is growing. Operations manager Guy Mawsonl says the club has aggressively pursued the hosting of significant events for club members as well as aiming to draw in new members. Each October the doors are opened to the public for the weekend of the Spring Fever dance festival – a combination of a membership drive, performances, classes, carpark market and live music. “We try and project a very professional image in everything we do,” says Guy. “We love to share our club and facilities with other clubs, and we hope that over summer, members from other clubs around New Zealand will pay us a visit.”

‘upmarket feel’ packs them into new lynn rSa More than 500 new members have joined the New Lynn RSA in the last 12 months. Much of the boom has resulted from the upmarket feel that has been generated in the club by renovations done a year ago, says assistant secretary manager Dale Mays. He says the club is now aiming to get even more people using its facilities. “The RSA is about socialising and meeting people in the local area. We want to focus on supporting the New Lynn area and on becoming a leading light in the community.” A new entertainment manager has just been appointed and, in the new year, the club will work on offering a wider range of music and entertainment options, including rock, reggae and blues. The RSA is already a popular venue for ballroom dancing. The Garden Restaurant has an outdoor dining space, which Dale reckons will be great over summer. Caterers Sarah Connor, who trained at the Hilton, and Marcus Bernzt have come up with a wide-ranging menu. The old favourites, such as roast beef scotch

the renovated bar facilities at the new lynn rSa. with yorkshire pudding and gravy, are still there. But they’ve been joined by the likes chicken breast crumbed with rice puffs and black sesame seeds served with plum and anise sauce, crumbed camembert with caramelised pear and port wine jellya. And whenit comes to desserts, you might like to try strawberry tart with vanilla custard and italian meringue in sweet pastry shells. The RSA has a separate TAB room equipped with flat-screen televisions, and a gaming room. It has also developed The Snug as a place for

families with children to relax. A membership draw every Thursday and Friday night jackpots by $80 a night. And then there’s the doorman’s derby – where members pay $2 and go in the hunt for their club membership number to win them a prize on the night. Getting to and from the New Lynn RSA is a breeze, says Dale. It’s across the road from Lynn Mall, and close to the bus stop and the train station, and Wednesday to Saturday, there’s a courtesy van for members within three kilometres of the club.

‘More trendy’ transformation What began as a revamp in the kitchen has led to a transformation of the Waiuku Cosmopolitan Club’s catering and eating facilities. The initial aim was to bring the kitchen up to health-and-safety compliance levels, and make it more workable for the club caterers. A new coolstore room was built to allow the caterer to work from just one floor – the previous cool-store was downstairs. The kitchen revamp led to redecoration of the restaurant, which was built in the early 1980s and still had what club president Lynda GrimmondReichel describes as a very outdated Cobb & Co style. Before launching into restaurant redecoration, members were asked if they would like to donate $100 towards the project. Each of the first 130 was entitled to have his/her name on a plaque fitted to the back of a chair. The response was so good the club was able to buy 130 new stackable chairs, paint the ceilings, beams and walls, lay new carpet tiles, and generally spruce up what was a very well-used area of the club. “It has given our restaurant a complete transformation,” says Lynda. “It has made it more trendy, and more serviceable to meet the needs

of a growing membership and the use of the club facilities in Waiuku.” The kitchen and restaurant re-opened on February 3 with nibbles and refreshments served through the evening Caterers Dean and Tracey Leuty offer a variety of menus – bistro, a la carte, smorgasbord, buffet. The restaurant is open on Thursday and Friday for lunch, and from Thursday to Sunday for dinner. The caterers cater for all club functions, plus 21st birthdays, weddings, funerals and other special occasions. family-friendly emphasis, new menu at henderson Some exciting changes are coming up at the Henderson RSA. The club has taken over the running of the Red Poppy restaurant and a new summer menu is due for release. The RSA has also developed a family-friendly area outside the library with couches, television and DVD player, as well as activities to keep the kids occupied. Live entertainment is on at the club every Friday and Saturday evening. An 18-machine gaming room, four snooker tables, three pool tables, dartboards, indoor bowls and five big-screen televisions provide a variety of recreational options A fun western-theme night, to be held at the club, is planned for New Year’s Eve, complete with a live

band, prizes for the best costume, and giveaways. Getting there shouldn’t a problem. The RSA is in the heart of Henderson, right across the road from the Henderson train station, and the club operates a courtesy van in return for a gold-coin donation. And if you’re thinking of heading north for the holidays, remember that the Henderson RSA has three holiday units for rent in Matapouri Bay. It’s one those many magic spots on the east coast of Northland – this one’s just a little north of Whangarei. The units, which have everything you need for a comfortable and enjoyable stay, are available to Clubs New Zealand affiliated members at very reasonable rates. Membership at the Papakura Club has been growing steadily over the past year as the club has sought to encourage younger members to join. “We want to get the word out that the Papakura Club is a great place to enjoy a meal, to socialise in, to be entertained, and to encourage all ages to join,” says club manager Betty Ormsby. The club’s annual two-day Jubilee Trophy open fishing tournament took place in early November. It’s a popular event with, typically, around 150 anglers competing for prizes and bragging rights for catching the heaviest snapper, kahawai, trevally, john dory, and kingfish. The club also held its kids’ Christmas fun day on December 2. There were activities for the whole family – a clown, a magician, a petting farm, a bouncy castle and sausage sizzles. Members are now gearing up for the New Years monster mash – a themed evening where members can dress up as their favourite monster and party into the new year to a live band. Heavy emphasis is put on sports groups, with the club offering 10 options – fishing, golf, eight ball, snooker, indoor bowls, outdoor bowls, table tennis, euchre, darts, and pigeon racing. In addition, a group of members meets on Monday evenings for texas hold’em poker and participates in interclub tournaments. Two of the club’s indoor bowlers, Kath Arvidson and Debbie Warren, have won the Clubs New Zealand women’s pairs title for the last three years. Kath has also been awarded a Gold Star for having won five New Zealand titles. The outdoor bowling green has been completely re-sown and the surrounding area given a makeover.

Winning duo: debbie Warren (left) and kath arvidson. The Papakura Club is set in a semi-industrial area surrounded by small businesses, and Betty says it intends to promote business-house bowls on Friday evenings. “This is the perfect place to wind down after a hard working-week, to enjoy good food, cold drinks and a fun night with good company.” The club’s large lounge and dance-floor area make it an excellent venue for weddings, birthdays, conferences and private functions, she says. The sports bar incorporates eight snooker tables, six pool tables and 12 dartboards. The club’s restaurant, which can seat up to 180 people has a menu of European and Thai cuisine. Chef Bee Charenthrop is from Thailand, and ensures that the dishes are authentic. Thai green curry, garlic and pepper prawns and steak, fresh snapper and barbecue ribs are some of what she has on offer.

the Papakura club: the perfect place to wind down after a hard working-week, says manager betty ormsby.

it’s choice, bays members say of club deal The Bays Club is intensifying its focus on what it can offer members, partly as a response to the tougher economic environment, says club manager Dave Hewitson. The club has renegotiated costs with suppliers and is now able to offer food at a better price, he says. The restaurant operates Tuesday to Sunday , and offers specials every day. For example, every day over-60s can eat an entrée and main, or a main and dessert, for $13.50. Dave says more special food deals are in the pipeline and will be in the market shortly. “There will be cheap meal options and more upmarket options, but everything will be cost effective. “Just like the alcohol – we don’t charge as much as the outside world does. Now we are doing the same with food. Because we run the kitchen, we can control the costs.” Another price saver for members is the new E Bet technology used by the club; it gives members a host of benefits, including loyalty schemes and rewards, he says.

The club is also working on improving its website so that people can find the information they need easily, and find out what the club has to offer. Situated just metres from the ocean, the Bays Club has around 1900 members. Not surprisingly membership is growing as people are increasingly realising the price advantages that come with membership, says Dave. “We’re a lot cheaper than most outside places and we have a stunning facility with great views over the Hauraki Gulf. “People are realising that the club is the perfect place to hang out if they want to have a good time for a great price.” The Bays Club’s activities include a wearable arts show, and a kids’ Christmas party on December 9. The club also has Elvis and Neil Diamond impersonators lined up as New Year’s Eve entertainment. “The biggest thing is to keep things changing all the time,” says Dave Hewitson. “It’s about looking after the membership and giving them what the modern world offers – choices.”

Whangamata celebrates its 50th Celebrations, congratulations and conversations abounded in Whangamata over the first weekend of November as the Whangamata Club marked its 50th anniversary. It began with very small beginnings in an old tin shed up the road; today the Whangamata Club has grown to a club of more than 4000 members and is what secretary/manager Gavin Antony terms “a great facility for all occasions” and “the hub of the community”. The club has 15 adjuncts, and is used regularly by community, sports and recreational organisations (there are ‘keep fit’ classes and tai chi two or three times a week). The Whangamata Club has also hosted the Clubs New Zealand North Island darts tournament several times. It took more than 12 months to plan the 50thanniversary festivities, held from November 2-4. The official guest list included Clubs NZ’s area delegate, former presidents and managers, life members, and the current executive committee. Gavin reports a great turnout at the Fridayevening Meet, Mix and Mingle, with many visitors descending on the club to say hello to people they hadn’t see for a long time. On the Saturday night, the club restaurant was host to guests and members, substantial meal and a few speeches. A special champagne breakfast on Sunday morning closes the weekend and farewelled those who had travelled from elsewhere. A special 50th-anniversary booklet has been

published. It has specific detail on the first 50 years and Gavin Antony is already counting it among the assets of those preparing memories for the club’s 75th anniversary and centenary.

Membership booms, upgrade plan in train at Waihi beach Membership at the Waihi Beach Memorial RSA has risen by nearly 50% in the last three years. The 800 new members in that time have pushed membership to 2500 – in a town that has just 2300 permanent residents. In October the club hosted 128 players for the New Zealand RSA golf tournament on the Waihi course. Twenty RSAs were represented, with Bill Newland securing a home-town win ahead of Roy Monteith (Te Atatu). A club upgrade plan is in train at the club. New carpet has been laid, the club interior has been redecorated, and the restaurant has new chairs. The next project is to reseal the carpark. Club policy is not borrowing – all upgrading is to come out of profits. Over the last two years, the club has run Waihi’s Got Talent event. The new club, which opened in 1999, has extensive views across the sea to Mayor Island. The restaurant, which has been operated by the club since 2010, opens for lunch and dinner every day, and

can cater for up to 400 dinners on a busy evening - its specialty is the carvery. It can do functions for up to 160 people, and is offering a $69/head Christmas Day lunch. The club’s entertainment card is fairly full too – Al Dawson on New Year’s Eve; Tony Wellington (a Stars in you Eyes finalist) on January 2; rock n roll with Gerry Lee on January 5, and a Neil Diamond Tribute Show on January 27. Sixteen gaming machines provide a mix of new and older popular games. Club activities include snooker, 8 ball, indoor and outdoor bowls, darts and golf. Two courtesy vans will run seven days (normally Thursday to Saturday) over the holiday period, servicing the Waihi, Athenree and Bowentown areas. Waikanae reinforces community role The Waikanae Chartered Club is looking forward to the holiday season and welcoming affiliated members visiting the Kapiti Coast. They can enjoy the club’s leisure and sporting activities, and its services and facilities in a friendly and safe environment, says Waikanae manager Shar Atkin. The club, which was established in 1975 and is just over the railway line on Elizabeth St in Waikanae, is always open and always friendly, he says. The club prides itself on its involvement with and support for the community, he says The current committee and staff have concentrated on furthering this aspect of the club’s activities, and there has been a recent push to provide a lot of live entertainment. Club facilities are available to members for private functions, and to community groups to hold their meetings and functions. In October Waikanae hosted a fundraiser for a Waikanae School playground upgrade. The club provided entertainment and the gold-coin-donation entry went to the a school. Regular SPCA and Food Bank donation drives are organised by the club, with members providing goods to be passed on to these charities. Entertainment at the club will be ramped up for the holiday season, starting at the end of November when the DnD Showband comes from Christchurch to perform an Abba and a Fleetwood Mac tribute set, along with other popular cover music. Shar Atkin says the DnD Showband is a known quantity at Waikanae. The group has performed at the club before, and puts on a really spectacular and energetic show with elaborate costumes and lighting. January 24 will also be a big night when Scottish entertainer Dennis Alexander performs his eclectic mixture of folk songs, stories, and comedy.

In February, it’ll again be time for the Waikanae Club to host the annual John King Memorial New Zealand Masters 8 ball pairs tournament. The event attracts 36 pairs each year and is a major on the Waikanae calendar. The club, which has a very strong 8 ball adjunct, has hosted this tournament for a number of years, and has been upgrading its tables along the way. The club now has four pool tables of tournament quality. These upgrades led to the club hosting the local 8 ball pool league finals in October. Around 150 people were there, a band provided entertainment, and it is hoped this could the finals could become an annual event at the club.

A $270,000 renovation at Porirua Club aims ro enhance the ability of staff to provide service and assistance to members. The three-stage renovation, completed by RDL Specialist Building Contractors, has increased the size of the TAB, created a dedicated reception area, and extended the club building with two new office spaces. And, says manager Lisa Beighton, the club was named as a finalist in both the ‘hospitality’ and ‘not for profit’ categories of this year’s Westpac Business Excellence awards. (Winners were announced after Interclub went to print). She says stage one of the renovation project, the TAB extension, was necessary because of

the high participation rates in the Punters Club on Saturdays. “We had a large area anyway, but it was getting a wee bit congested on Saturdays. We also go through that same argument as every club, when we have a band versus a rugby game. So, we thought we’d put another big-screen TV in there on a beautiful, red wall, which is a good, dedicated sports area to watch the rugby when we have entertainment on.” Stage two of the development was the reception and raffle area. Porirua Club has never had a dedicated receptionist or reception space, says Lisa. The busiest time for members visiting the club is between 4pm and 8pm Wednesday to Saturday, and that’s when a receptionist is on duty to direct people to functions, answer

munity closer membership enquiries, and provide other services to members and guests. “Because we don’t always have a receptionist on duty, we had to have a reception space that was able to work in both situations,” Lisa Beighton says. “We’ve got a beautiful large foyer, and we’ve created a fully enclosed and lockable computer work station for the receptionist, which is still a welcoming space if there’s no receptionist on.” The reception area fronts the new administration block with glass panelling that carries the club’s logo. The administration block, stage three of the project, has two new offices and a new server room built on to the front of the building. The completed renovations are a credit to RDL Specialist Building Contractors, says Lisa, who was new to her role and to the Porirua Club when the project began. The building company adapted easily to her management, and was awesome to work with, she says. She says the Porirua Club has been experiencing membership growth for the past three years, thanks to a committee and management that recognises both the need to balance governance and management, and the need to be part of the community. “One of the things we’ve been focused on

We’ve focused on getting involved in the community projects and giving the community more ownership of our club. lately is getting involved in community projects and giving the community more ownership of our club. I’m really proud that our board is in to doing that.” The club has recently become involved with an after-school programme for 12 to 14-year-olds, learning about hygiene and food preparation in a commercial kitchen. When the kitchen being used by the programme was no longer available, the programme organisers approached the club for help. “We got involved, and from there it evolved to our caterer giving the kids lessons in the commercial kitchen At the end of the programme we held a graduation dinner here and the kids invited their whanau.”

Foxton RSA rises from the ashes Kelly Deeks The Foxton RSA has risen from the ashes of the old club that was destroyed by fire on November 16, 2006. The rebuilding of the club has now been completed. The new facility, which was officially opened just before Anzac Day in April 2008, includes a restaurant, library, private-function room, stage, gaming room, offices, a parents’ room, and an extensive outdoor, covered area. Development was finished off with the sealing and marking of the car-parking area, and the landscaping of the grounds and gardens, which are looked after

by club member Charlie Potts. The front entrance to the club has been lined with memorial trees dedicated to deceased returned service members. The Foxton RSA will be the scene of the 21 Supply Company charter parade and beating retreat, on December 8. It will be full-ceremonial style as company personnel march with banners flying and bayonets fixed. Local MP Nathan Guy has been in touch with the Foxton RSA to report that funding is available for World War 1 centennial projects. Projects can include commemorative events, memorials, exhibitions, restorations and publications; the club is asking members for their ideas.

Twenty-one members of the Timaru Town and Country Club’s travel section spent 10 days exploring and relaxing in the southern south Island in september. Their travels took them through the Otago and southland countryside and small towns, from one side of the island to the other, and there was a fleeting visit to Invercargill. JOHN and LORRAINE GAsCOIGNE were among the adventurers. They report on where they went, what they saw, what they did, and how much everyone enjoyed it.

‘Great generosity’ from RsAs The original Foxton RSA, which was a combination of a house and an army barracks, had been on the site for more than 55 years. Although it was built to code, the building was too old to have been fitted with a sprinkler system; The building had become an important community gathering place in Foxton, and the club had more than 500 members on its books at the time. The spirit to rebuild from the ruin was there. The club rooms, with entrances from Easton St and Lady’s Mile, began as a house. In the early 1980s, a hall from Ohakea was grafted on to the back of the house. Around 1990, the front of the house was extended and an awning erected to form a smokers’ area. The building was insured, but secretary manager Sue August says the saddest loss was the history, memorabilia, medals, pictures and mementoes. Some medals and trophies were rescued from one side of the building,

Also lost were pool tables and eight poker machines owned by the club, a casino, TAB, and a restaurant. Sue says many RSAs around the country responded with great generosity. Donations of new furniture from Newmarket; mounted weapons on stained timber bases from Upper Hutt; computer equipment, a fax machine, and other memorabilia from Palmerston North; photographs of the New Zealand Victoria Cross recipients from Morrinsville. A number of other RSAs assisted with donations of memorabilia to be displayed in the new clubrooms, and the Ministry of Veterans’ Affairs donated $5000 towards replacement of memorabilia The Foxton RSA executive has decided to complete its collection by buying a photograph of New Zealand’s latest Victoria Cross recipient, Cpl Willie Apiata.

Pat lays on the south for her swansong trip Twenty-one Timaru Town & Country Club travellers covered a lot of ground – and a fair bit of bush and water – during the second half of September. The group left Timaru on September 19, bound for Wanaka lunch at Omarama’s Wrinkly Lamb was followed by visits to the Air Force and Toy museums. Accommodation that night was in first-floor units with a view at the Wanaka Hotel. The visitors say they enjoyed the reception area and found staff helpful.

After an early start and lots of laughs at Puzzling World next morning, it was on to the Fiordland Hotel/ Motel in Te Anau, which to be base for the next six nights. The units were self contained and spacious, with good views. The staff here were helpful too. Friday the 21st saw the group cruising across Lake Te Anau to explore the magical world of glow-worms and sculpted limestone caves – an

A bus...and boats and planes From page 19 underground nature excursion of walking through caves and boating on hidden waterways. Another early start on the Saturday had the journeyers on their way to Milford Sound for a cruise, buffet lunch and close-up views of the waterfalls, wildlife and out-of-this-world rainforest. It was a long Sunday drive to across the Southland coast and countryside – through Manapouri, Tuatapere and Colac Bay to Invercargill, then back to Anau through Centre Bush, Dipton, Lumsden and Mossburn. On the Monday eight of the group headed across Lake Manapouri and over the Wilmot Pass to Doubtful Sound for an overnight cruise on the sound aboard the Fiordland Navigator. The boat trip involved kayaking, ‘tendercrafting’, cruising close to cliffs and waterfalls, and plenty of tempting food. By early afternoon on the Tuesday, everyone was back together in Te Anau to relax and pack for the Wednesday bus-trip to Balclutha. Along the way to the two-night stay in Balclutha, there was a visit to the Mandeville Aeroplane Workshop and Museum, near Croydon, then lunch in Gore. Thursday the 27th was devoted to the Catlins – the three-tiered Purakanui Falls, the Matai Falls, the McLean Falls, fossilised tree remains at Curio Bay, and a picnic lunch at Porpoise Bay. Dunedin was the Friday destination, then, after visiting the city’s Saturday markets, the trippers headed for home, stopping at Palmerston for lunch and hitting Timaru around 4pm. This was the last Timaru Town & Country Club trip to be organised by Pat Edwards. She has stepped down after 25 years of immensely appreciated service as trip co-ordinator, but will remain a member of the travel section.

Clubbies vote Methven trots a hot favourite Clubs New Zealand president Tom Fisher and most of his board members joined close to 500 clubbies at Methven’s Mt Harding racetrack for the fifth Clubs of Canterbury raceday. They revelled in the early-September sunshine, forgot their woes for a day, and let their hair down. From start to finish, there was an ample supply of food, and the beverages flowed to help keep dehydration at bay. All of them vowed to do it again next year. The punters’ club was as popular as ever – although for the third year in a row, the return was a big, round nil. The Hornby Club won the inter-club challenge, while Pam Kelly, from the Papanui Club, was the luckiest punter, turning her $100 spend into a near-$1000 profit. Clubs NZ’s Canterbury area board member, Keith Ballantyne, says this year’s event could not have gone ahead without support from other New Zealand clubs.

Some of the earthquake fund was used to help fund the event, along with support from the TAB, Clubs NZ insurance and Mainland Gaming. “The support shown from clubs through New Zealand following the events in Christchurch over the last couple of years has been overwhelming and humbling,” he says. “The region cannot express the gratitude we feel....thank you.” PHOTOs From all reports, the near-500-clubbies at the Methven trots thoroughly enjoyed themselves. It looks like it. Clockwise from top: Lunchtime; sueallen Lugg and Allan Everest give their horse a bit of encouragement; attack on the chilly-bin; victory dance; Laurie Williams (Hornby) ponders where he puts his cash – just like any self-respecting club treasurer should; this foursome gets down to the serious stuff. CLUB LIFE – CANTERBURY

Hornby looks to commercial income Hornby WMC members are enjoying enhanced surroundings following a $2.5m transformation of the club’s facilities. General manager Daniel Ferguson says the club’s interior decor has been completely refurbished with new soft fittings and furniture, the kitchen has been overhauled, the gaming room has been modernised, and the TAB area has been updated with technology and 55-inch television screens. The purchase of a new courtesy coach has boosted the club’s fleet to three. “The refurbishment has given the club a fresh,

modern feel and has been very well received by our growing membership base,” says Daniel. Member numbers – “now a touch over 6500” – have been increasing consistently since the earthquakes, he says. He put this down to a combination of greater demand for facilities in Christchurch, the western spread of the city’s population and the club’s new surroundings. The Hornby WMC also has some commercialdevelopment initiatives in the pipeline. It sits on its own four-hectare plot of valuable business 2-zoned land adjacent to The Hub mall, the suburb’s main retail centre. The club is refurbishing its two investment properties (leased by The Warehouse and Briscoes), and is looking at further bulk-retail developments on the site of its former bowling green, which has been cleared for this purpose. “Members agreed the bowling green had served its time and we could use the land to develop something more valuable for the club,” says Daniel. “The Hub has its own major redevelopment getting under way over the next 18 months, and the club is poised to do its bit when the right tenant comes along.” Although commercial activities provide income streams for the club, the social and sports activities provided for members remain at the heart of the operation, he says. “When we have a big show, we can have up to 1300 people on site at one time. Lately we’ve

With a $2.5m transformation (above, left and far left) behind it, the Hornby WMC is looking to more commercial opportunities. hosted a sell-out crowd for Herman’s Hermits, and 600 attended the Living Dolls lingerie and burlesque show. Our function facilities are also in high demand from outside bookings.” He says the club has a full entertainment

programme leading up to Christmas, and is looking forward to hosting the Clubs New Zealand South Island trout fishing competition in March. “We’re expecting around 120 competitors. It should be a fantastic event.”

Cashmere functions boom in the wake of the quake Christchurch’s Cashmere Club has been “inundated” with booking requests for its five function areas (including its sports hall), since the earthquakes. “Straight after the earthquakes a lot of distressed people were trying to find alternative venues for their weddings,” says general manager Don Whyte. “We’ve picked up a lot more of this type of activity in the last 18 months.” It was fortuitous that the club’s $1.5m makeover was completed just a few weeks before the February 2011 quake, leaving it poised to take advantage of the opportunities. “The city lost a huge number of function venues in the earthquake, but Cashmere was “one of the lucky ones”, says Don. “We suffered no structural or major damage. We lost a lot of product, but otherwise the club was closed for only a week.” The club is now in the midst of its busiest two months of the year – the racing season and Christmas.

“We’re still getting phone calls from people wanting to book in 150 people for their end-ofyear function; they can’t believe we’re not able to accommodate them. But our function venues are booked solid every Friday and Saturday night until Christmas.” Members are also enjoying the refurbished and refreshed surroundings that include: a new sports bar with numerous plasma and LCD screens; a big screen for major sporting events; eight pool tables; two snooker tables, a full-service TAB, a self-service terminal and a fully staffed terminal. The restaurants and kitchens have also had a major overhaul. Whyte says it’s a “real community hub” and home to various community and sports groups (the Sydenham Rugby Football Club, the Avon City Rock and Roll group, martial arts groups) and service clubs (Grey Power, Probus and Rotary). Like many in Canterbury, Cashmere is enjoying rising membership as police and licensing authorities take a stricter line on clubs serving non-members.

Cashmere Club members are enjoying the fruits of their club’s $1.5m makeover. “The lack of venues in the city, combined with customers’ growing awareness of the rules around drinking in a club environment, has seen our membership grow fairly steadily.

“Over all, we’re pretty happy with the way things are going. There could always be more people here spending more money, but generally the club is performing really well.”

Clubs ‘to and fro’ in post-quake era Jordan Luck (left) and fans (below) on song during his gig his gig at the Woolston Club.

Woolston fills community role in ‘heart of hard-hit suburbs’ The value of the Woolston Club to its local community has become even more pronounced since the Christchurch earthquakes, says general manager Luke Piper. “We’re in the heart of the hard-hit eastern suburbs where everyone has a story to tell. It’s great that we can provide local facilities for people to meet and share experiences. “That’s what the club is all about.” The club’s main buildings “held up really well” through the earthquakes, although there was around $3 million of damage to the main building, carparks, sports grounds and sports pavilions. He says the club is making good progress on repair and upgrade works. Priority has been given to rebuilding the sports grounds on the 7-hectare site – two cricket grounds, three football fields, three bowling greens and two grass tennis courts. Around 500 tonnes of liquefaction had to be removed from Garrick Park (named after the club’s founder), which is also home to numerous clubs, including the Lancaster Park Woolston Cricket Club and the Cashmere Technical Football Club, which has 1400 playing members. “Finding grounds and facilities for all these players has been a real challenge, so it was

important we got some vital sports facilities back into the area as soon as possible,” says Luke. “The cricket season has started here on time and we’re looking forward to providing home grounds for the football teams next season.” Luke Piper, a 33-year-old Australian who originally came to Christchurch on a cricket contract. took over as general manager last June. He had previously managed the Blue Pub, at Methven, and a Kaikoura bar. He says the club has had “a big IT kick” over the last 12 months with the introduction of new Cloud-based systems – an integrated point-of-sale software to improve the administration of members’ transactions and the club’s loyalty-reward points schemes; a new database to track the 5000-6000 members; an updated website. The five bars and function spaces in the club’s main building are “super busy” with functions and catering, says Luke. “The lack of venues and facilities in the city has created high demand. We’ve also worked hard to lift the bar in our service delivery; this, combined with our ability to cater for big groups, has resulted in strong bookings. We are flat out with our own shows and events in the busy lead-up to Christmas.”

Keith Ballantyne It has been 18 months of to-ing and fro-ing, engineers’ reports, geo-technical jargon, building codes and structural strength – and, of course, more than 10,000 shakes. But...we are still here and working through the issues that now dog a “post-quake” Christchurch. So that you know what is really happening, here’s a club-by-club rundown: • Kaiapoi Club: Open and fully operational. Repairs have been done, still awaiting ground repairs and the removal of second-storey restaurant structure. • Oxford Club: Open and fully operational. Repairs done. • Ashburton clubs: Open and fully operational. Some minor remedial work to be done. • New Brighton: Open upstairs and fully

operational. Major repair work nearly finished. • Woolston: Open and fully operational. Repairs completed. • Cashmere: Open and fully operational Repairs completed. • Hornby: Open and fully operational. • Papanui: Bar and gaming open and fully operational. Half the club closed temporarily because of structural issues. • Richmond: Closed temporarily because of structural issues. • St Albans-Shirley: Open and fully operational. Repairs being undertaken. • Rangiora RSA: Open and fully operational. • Lyttelton Club: Open and fully operational. Repairs being undertaken. • Closed since the earthquakes: City Club, Commerce Club, Riccarton Club. (Keith Ballantyne is the Canterbury area member on the Clubs New Zealand board).

The Richmond WMC is still off limits, but manager Ricky Gilmore says the wait for reopening will be worth it.

Richmond reopening ‘some time’ off It may be some time before Richmond Club reopens its doors, but general manager Ricky Gilmore believes the wait will be worth it. “Through all the doom and gloom it is satisfying to know that our members can look forward to a new and modern club, fitted with the latest facilities, furniture and fittings. The Richmond Club will return brighter and better than ever.” After the 22 February earthquake the club’s older main buildings were badly damaged and deemed unsafe to occupy. Fortunately the club was able to transfer some of its facilities into the adjoining 1990s buildings and it reopened for trade on the 19 March 2011. “Although we were running on a much smaller scale and lacked many of our facilities, this arrangement worked well and gave our members a small taste of normality,” says Ricky Gilmore. The club continued to trade in this way until 17th August this year, when engineers hit club management with the bombshell that their newly completed structural reports on the 1990s buildings showed they were below earthquake standard and would require strengthening work to comply. “The news wasn’t good. Although CERA was yet to be notified of this report the decision was made

immediately and unanimously by the committee in attendance and under advice from the engineer, that for the safety of our members and staff, this would be our last day of trading and we would remain closed until the building was brought up to standard.” Nearly three months on the club is still closed and awaiting final costs for strengthening work. Gilmore says club management are considering several different options for the rebuild works and that the strengthening costs will help to determine how the rebuild will proceed. “We are in the fortunate position of being able to maintain payments to our staff and are also trying to look after our members by running our courtesy van to and from the CRE Bowling Club and the Shirley St Albans Club.” Although the club is closed, its office staff attends weekly to process wages and Gilmore is onsite each day to complete administration duties and deal with insurance representatives and contractors in preparation for the pending demolition of the older buildings. “It’s impossible to say exactly when we’ll reopen, but members can rest assured we’re moving as swiftly as we can and look forward to the day we can welcome them back through the doors.”

The restaurant is temporarily closed due to earthquake issues. Also our gym is operating on a limited basis for the same reason. • • • • • • • • •
