An architect’s drawing of the $1.1 million extension of the Gore and Districts Memorial RSA.

Membership drives extension Peter Owen Work has begun on a $1.1-million extension at the Gore and Districts Memorial RSA’s building. This expansion is just the latest signal of the RSA’s success. Not only is it the preferred social centre for many of Eastern Southland’s former service personnel and their wives, but it is now one of the most popular clubs in the region. Membership has topped 2200 – and continues to grow. Manager Steve Brinsdon says the expansion had been on the cards for a long time and it’s great to see the project under way. He says much of the funding will come from the club’s reserves and the balance from a bank advance. The time is right to do that, he says: “We can get it paid off while interest rates are low.” The addditional facilities will include a conference or function room, which will allow the club to cater for large (up to 500) conventions, weddings and meetings. “It will give us another room to cater for groups without having to close our bistro as we do now if we have bigger groups in,” says Steve Brinsdon. “And it will have another bar, which will make life easier.” The extension will give the club much-needed breathing space. The sports room will be moved into a new area (currently a carpark) and the billiards room will be expanded into a function room. A wall with a poppy symbol will “tie in nicely with the cenotaph”, says Steve Brinsdon. He says it was hoped that the new facilities will be up and running by the middle of the year. Brinsdon believes Gore’s membership is among the top five for RSAs in the country. A big celebration and open day is being planned for the club’s centenary in September 2017, and he is confident this will bring in more members. “People are aware because we open our doors. Everyone is welcome for a meal. We would like them to be members though. We need to concentrate on the next generation. It’s not the end, it’s just the beginning.” Gore has eight sub-branches – which would not survive on their own, but sit under the Gore wing. With 200 members Mataura is the biggest of these. These sub-branches do not operate full-time – they

have a few meetings, and base their activities largely around Anzac Day Despite Gore’s commercial success (“we run it as more of a business than a club”), Brinsdon says the RSA is about the welfare of the soldiers in the area. Brinsdon believes the Mataura Licensing Trust is also to thank for the RSA’s successes too. Because the MLT governs the area it helps to prevent competition intruding on the RSA’s bar. One of those behind the success of the RSA in Gore has been Fred Cooper. His efforts for the RSA in general, and in Gore and Mataura in particular, led to life membership awards for both the Gore and Mataura branches, and two Gold Star badges for services to the national RSA (the first on March 3, 1981 and the second on May 10, 1997). He was Otago/Southland RSA district president

for two years, and the RSA representative on the Southland Pensions Board for 12 years. He has been associated with all RSA working bees since 1957. Several years ago he was honoured with the Queen’s Service Medal for his services to his community. He sees the RSA as primarily a welfare organisation; looking after the interests of returned personnel and their widows is very important. He has been an active visitor to sick and distressed exservice personnel and their widows for more than 47 years and continues to do so. He was responsible for the purchase of the Gore RSA’s very central site, for designing and building the premises, and then for the design and construction of alterations and extensions, and the purchase of adjoining land.

Establish a clear money trail. You should be able to track the flow of every dollar that passes through the club.

How to catch a thief – why clubs need system audits System audits are not done to get rid of managers or to catch them out on something. They are about working with the club manager and committee to prevent fraud and make it easy to identify when it does happen. System audits: • Make things more transparent. Transparency is the best way to stop tongues wagging and finger pointing when the till does not balance or stock goes missing. • Establish a clear money trail. You should be able to track the flow of every dollar that passes through the club. I call it a money snail trail. • Make sure things are done efficiently by using the latest technology. All clubs should have their management systems reviewed at least once every three years. That review will reveal any holes that can be exploited and bring things up to speed with technology. It will also reveal which systems are not being put into practice. Committees are not doing their stewardship role properly if they are not regularly reviewing their systems. I have been doing system audits for 15-plus years. In every case theft has been reduced as a result. Would-be thieves know things are so tight they won’t get away with it. The audits I do are a three to four-day process. At the end of it, I prepare a written report which I deliver in person to the committee. That report is a detailed analysis of:

Joanne Newman • your systems weaknesses, • the risk areas, • how those risks can be reduced. And just as importantly, it’s no use having a systems audit done if it’s not put into practice. I follow up to make sure it is. I have the advantage of seeing a club’s accounting and control systems as an outsider looking in. Sometimes fresh eyes will see tell-tale signs in the behaviour of a staff member or manager that those working within the club cannot see. I come in with no preconceptions and without any relationships that may influence my judgment. * Joanne Newman is a New Zealand authority on club accounting and forensic auditing. Clubs need to get closer to councils Change is like death and taxes – it will keep happening. The Clubs New Zealand movement is operating in an ever-changing environment and we must continue to keep up with change as it affects our business. Food, liquor and transport law changes don’t make running a club easy. Couple this with local government authorities throwing their weight around and councils who don’t understand what our industry is really about and it’s clear we have some challenges to overcome. For those of you I haven’t had the chance to meet yet I’ve been involved in the club movement for some time – president of the Otorohanga Club for 10 years and 17 years on executive, deputy chairman of the Clubs New Zealand board, eight years as area delegate for King Country, Chairman Clubs New Zealand Financial Risk and Audit Committee as well as sitting on FRA since its inception. As many of you will know, I have always worked for members, doing what I believe is correct. In my day job I’m a service manager for Giltrap Agrizone overseeing three workshops – Otorohanga, Rotorua, Mangakino. I have responsibility for about 30 staff, with eight of these guys being mobile service technicians covering King country, central North Island and the Bay of Plenty. Previously I was five years with Tadano Cranes around New Zealand and prior to this I spent 13 years as operations manager for OTL-Freightlines group. On a personal note, I’m married to Heather and we have three children aged between 23 and 32 and three grandchildren. So now, as the new president of Clubs New Zealand, what do I believe that we need to do going forward? I believe one key is that Clubs New Zealand needs to get closer to the mayors and councils. These authorities dictate what our clubs can and can’t do but if they are not informed correctly it can result in bureaucratic nonsense. For example, in my role as president of the Otorohanga Club, I had thought I had a good rapport with our local mayor until Anzac Day three years ago, when I was having breakfast with him and realised the disregard he had for what our club did and how gaming actually worked. We had some intense email exchanges, which concluded in me attending council to educate them on the important role our club was playing in the

President, Clubs New Zealand community. Changes to gaming are another big issue. With the gaming goose not laying as many golden eggs clubs need to start watching their spending more and understand where their club’s incomes actually comes from. Most of our facilities have been built on the back of gaming and clubs need to make sure their bar and restaurant can stand up for themselves financially. Change also needs to take place from a head office level. For example, I believe that we need to make sure clubs that are supporting initiatives like Clubs New Zealand insurance continue to reap the financial benefits they deserve. Capitation is another big issue and is up for discussion at the Clubs New Zealand Board and AGM. I also feel strongly about supporting the RSA and what they stand for. My youngest son is in the air force and I have not missed a dawn parade since the RSA joined the Otorohanga Club. As a movement we will continue to be there for the RSA clubs that are part of our organisation. But not all change is a challenge. As an organisation there have been lots of positive changes. It’s clear that Clubs New Zealand is not here to make money but because we are now in a strong financial position we are in a very good space to be able to support clubs better than ever. I think head office is operating very well – we have good leadership and staff understand their roles and get on with things in a friendly and professional manner. Change will continue to happen and clubs of the future will be different. We need to keep on letting government and other officials know that clubs play an important part in communities throughout New Zealand. Clubs do good things for our communities, mostly by just being a club. Finally I would like to acknowledge the important role our past president, Tom Fisher, has played in getting the Clubs New Zealand movement to where it is today. I look forward to carrying on from where Tom has left off and helping to guide our movement into the future.

Tom hands over the baton Departing Clubs NZ President Tom Fisher’s contribution to the club movement over many decades and the support of his wife Dulcie was acknowledged at the 2016 Clubs NZ AGM and Conference held at the Upper Hutt Cossie Club on March 17-19. It was a visibly emotional Tom Fisher who congratulated new President Bryan Fergusson and wished him all the best in his new role. With Tom stepping down there were two nominations for his position with Fergusson defeating Pat Mitchell in the ballot. The three days featured the biggest Hospitality and Gaming Expo ever hosted by Clubs NZ on the Thursday with over 45 stands, including the five major gaming companies who each had five of their latest poker machines on display. The conference on the Friday featured some quality keynote speakers from both New Zealand and overseas. Australian hospitality guru Daniel Munk urged clubs to have a pokies upgrade plan in place while Darryl Lovegrove broke into song while talking about

the phenomenal international success he enjoyed after forming The Three Waiters. Former Prime Minister Dame Jenny Shipley completed the day with a thought-provoking address on leadership. There was quality entertainment throughout the three days with DKCM showcasing their many award-winning shows including the Three Maitre Ds, Faulty Towers, Mrs Browns Boyz, the Buble Experience and Midtown Boys. Irish band Noodles had the crowd rocking on St Patrick’s Day and one of Wellington’s leading acts Lock N Load performed for four hours non-stop on the Tui Friday night when six Tui Girls were in attendance posing for photos and giving away Tui gear. Fifty clubs contested the $2300 Clubs Punting Challenge sponsored by the TAB on the Saturday afternoon won by the Weymouth Cosmopolitan and Sports Club.

Cossie Club Manager Dean Candy was proud of the work his staff did over three very busy days. “I received very positive feedback from delegates about my team, our facilities, transport, meals and the entertainment. “On the Friday morning we pre-sold 50 breakfasts and expected 100, but when nearly 250 turned up

the restaurant staff did an amazing job getting them through with little delay. “Also my executive was hands-on throughout the three days and we had excellent support for volunteer drivers from our members.” And will the Upper Hutt Cossie Club be applying to host the conference again in the future. “If we do hopefully I will be retired by then.” said Dean. The 2017 Clubs NZ AGM and Conference will be hosted by Clubs Of Marlborough and the following year by the St Johns Club in Wanganui.

CLUB LIFE: PAPANUI CLUB

Papanui Club ushers in new era Sue Russell

Bernie O’Fagan, manager and founder of Christchurch based RM Designs, has no doubt that the design, use and feel of Papanui Club’s new facilities is pioneering a whole new era in modern club design. RM Designs was given the role not only of designing the new 3000sq metre club, built on a geotechnically stronger site than the original club in north west Christchurch, but also oversaw its project management. It gave Bernie and his team the opportunity to work closely with the club’s executive and building committee for two years. “We came to understand through the feasibility, design and construction phases just what this new club would mean to its members and what struck me, right from the start, was how the club saw the rebuild as an opportunity to strike out in new directions and redefine what their club would represent to the community of members and wider population,” says Bernie. The brief, he says, was simple. The leadership of the club wanted Papanui to be the best club in New Zealand, creating an atmosphere which would appeal to a much wider membership. “They wanted spaces that would access new limbs of business for the club and which would in turn attract new members. It was all about growth in new directions and future-proofing the club financially.” The way the project was managed created opportunities to work flexibly with design elements throughout with work getting underway on the substantial ground infrastructures while the detail of the spaces above, having received resource consent, will still in concept form. This created cost consideration options throughout the build. “We were very conscious the new club had to be designed in a way that would attract visitors and

members through its doors. I look at the completed building and one thing stands out for me – the building has a real sense of ‘arrival’ to it.” Pivotal to the design and flow of the building was the precept that spaces would be used for multifunctional purposes. The advantage, Bernie says, is seeing a club operating that way is that wherever one is in the building there is activity and view of other areas. A large green courtyard, with roofing technologies that can be opened and closed depending on the weather, acts as the central hub of the club. All other spaces connect one way or another to this. The benefit, Bernie says, in designing the hub is that the traditionally separated spaces of bars, lounges and activity areas still common in many clubs has been removed from the club’s footprint. “What is so appealing is the way the members have embraced this new more open, flexible floorplan. Gone are the days of sitting at a specific leaner day in day out and there has been a real taking up of ownership of all the spaces by the members.” The club’s brand new gastro area has set a benchmark in dining experience. Central and very

visible to those dining is a solid fuel Argentinian designed ‘fire-pit’ grill, creating an atmosphere all of its own and an engaging eating experience. Best of all Bernie says, the club is attracting a multitude of patrons, from regular club members, to groups accessing spaces for their activities, to a substantial number of venue bookings. “This club has certainly embraced a new commercial era and through the courage and vision of its executive and management has heralded in the club of the future.” RM Designs specialises in commercial hospitality and retail design and project management work with significant clients and projects spread across the length and breadth of the country. “We are a close-knit team. There’s a dozen of us with a solid core of highly experienced design operatives. At the end of the day we measure our success on the ringing of the till for our clients and what has been created at the Papanui Club is a direct product of the close partnership between the club and RM Designs.”

Papanui’s ‘amazing new expression’ of Sue Russell Seizing the opportunity to redefine what a modern day chartered club looks and feels like in the wake of the earthquake was the best thing that ever happened to Christchurch’s Papanui Club, according to its manager Keith Ballantyne. “I have to thank the executive of the club for sharing the vision of rebuilding it in a way that has future-proofed the business and created a very modern and welcoming club for the community,” Keith says. Following three years of planning and building the new Papanui Club finally opened its doors late January and since that time Keith says the impact of the open, fresh and appealing design has been phenomenal. “We have welcomed 2000 new members and the club is buzzing.”The $14 million project involved rebuilding the new 3000 square metre club toward the rear of its site, on stable land. Central to its design and function is an open courtyard hub offering indoor outdoor flow for members and visitors. The hub is the heart of the club and Keith describes it an inviting airy space. Recognising the shift in demand from patrons and guests away from only supplying alcohol to supplying food resulted in creating three dining options; a sports bar, a traditional carvery and a new dining experience, ‘Embers’ – New Zealand’s first open fire grill Argentinian inspired restaurant. “We decided to seriously look at food provision in the club and in our research I went to Sydney’s restaurant of the year, which has an amazing fire grill. ‘Embers’ has proved extremely popular and is bringing in a whole new patronage,” says Keith. The move into the new club took two hectic weeks and as a result of increased activity and membership, Keith says the staffing numbers have doubled, making the Papanui Club a significant

a modern day club Big views, wide

range at Havelock Karen Phelps Established in 1949 Havelock North Club is the only club in the region. With just under 700 members and growing, the reason that the club has been successfully operating for so long is the facilities on offer and the large range of activities and adjuncts the club offers, says club secretary manager Raquel Renall. Set in the heart of the village with views of Te Mata Peak and the surrounding region, the club offers members a unique place to relax with family and friends, offering full bar facilities and restaurant. A recent upgrade to the gaming area has seen it modernised with a lighter, brighter colour scheme. Tinted windows have removed the need for curtains and opened up the area. Machines have been updated to offer Multi Stacks, Cats and Cards and two Megastars with ten games each. Another area of the club, which has recently been modernised, is the restaurant kitchen. Over the Christmas holiday period committee members completed the renovations themselves to make the space more user friendly. The result has been faster, more efficient service for customers, says Raquel. This follows on from renovations to modernise the décor of the club restaurant.

With a view of Te Mata Peak and its iconic Sleeping Giant outline the restaurant offers a changing a-la-carte menu with a variety of dishes based on locally sourced seasonal produce. There are nightly specials and the restaurant is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. It can also be hired out for special occasions. The club is in the process of developing an outdoor area complete with plantings and a safe playing area for children. Raquel is also hoping that once finished the area will be able to host jam sessions for local musicians and singers, providing a bit of entertainment for members as well as livening up the atmosphere and attracting the wider community to the club. She says that the Havelock North Club offers a variety of member benefits including live Sky Sport coverage; three big screen TVs, on site TAB and a courtesy van. Recreation and sporting activities on offer enable groups to meet up and share their passion with fellow members, says Raquel. The club has snooker every Tuesday night at 7pm plus Day Dash Snooker on the first and third Tuesdays of every month and every Wednesday at 1.30pm. There is also indoor bowls every Tuesday night at 7pm and the club has two 8-Ball tables onsite.

Like-minded club amalgamation a ‘huge success’ Karen Phelps

Million dollar views and a warm welcome await at Club Vista.

The decision to amalgamate the Kapiti Club and Paraparaumu RSA under the umbrella ‘Club Vista’ at Paraparaumu Beach has been a big success according to Club Vista deputy chairman and Paraparaumu RSA president Chris Turver. Since the amalgamation last September membership has risen by 750. “The amalgamation has been brilliant. There has been good will all the way through. It’s introduced two different groups of people and, as an organization, has given us collective strength,” he says. Chris says that it was a nine month process to amalgamate, driven by the fact that each business was experiencing serious financial difficulties accentuated by the change in liquor laws, which saw attendance and bar takings fall. “In Paraparaumu district there were 202 licensed liquor outlets. That told us that we are now operating in an age of very intense hospitality competition,” he says. Change was needed and after informal talks between both parties a joint steering committee was formed in January 2015 to direct the amalgamation. Chris says the biggest challenge was the desire for the Paraparaumu RSA to continue to function as an independent incorporated society. Provision has been made for this in the Club Vista trading entity but Chris says the most difficult aspect of the amalgamation was ensuring the structure was correct. The Paraparaumu RSA will sell its old site and has moved into the Kapiti Club premises with both the groups sharing in the asset value of the building. Club Vista – the name reflects the outstanding waterfront view the premise has – operates with a governing board of directors including two each from both organisations and a recently appointed fifth member to add more governance experience. A seven-person operations committee includes two from each club, two with specialist skills and with the club president as chairman. Separate from this is the RSA executive board. Adjuncts have combined.

Club Vista president Ken Rand is pleased by how positively RSA members have taken to their new club because it was a big wrench for many to leave the old RSA building and in many cases have to travel further. But mementos and memorabilia around Club Vista displaying moments of both the RSA and Club’s proud past ensure everybody continues to feel a sense of connection. “One of the most encouraging features is that new members include many young families and professional couples and the changing dynamics means there is a real sense that we have a great future,” says Ken. Facilities at Club Vista for club members to enjoy include pool and snooker tables, TAB, gaming machines with jackpot and Sky TV. There is regular live entertainment as well as a weekly quiz night, housie, jazz on the last Sunday of the month and karaoke every second and fourth Friday. There are regular member draws and meat raffles. The club offers six adjuncts: Cue Sport, Entertainment and Wine, Outdoor Bowls, Fishing, Golf, and Hurricane Supporters. Half price taxi fares for members make visiting Club Vista a safe and economical entertainment experience, says Chris. Other benefits of amalgamation have been the ability to invest back into Club Vista. Steps so far taken include building the Club Vista brand with new signage and a repaint of the building, remodelling the kitchen to provide a better restaurant service, and improving systems to support the increased membership. There are plans to continue to upgrade the rest of the Club Vista facility over time. Membership of Club Vista now sits at 2550 and growing. When people join Club Vista they also have the option of joining the Paraparaumu RSA for $10 extra, an offer many members have already taken up. Chris says it’s a good feeling to be part of a thriving business after the financial strife the individual businesses experienced when they were operating on their own. “If there are other towns like us and trading is going down the gurgler it would be worthwhile considering whether it’s possible to amalgamate with a like-minded club. It’s certainly worked well for us and been a huge success.”

‘Conflict pillars’ stand tall at memorial A new war memorial park has been opened and dedicated in Takaka. It is on the site of the former war memorial library, which was destroyed by fire five years ago. Golden Bay RSA vice-president Noel Baigent says the idea for a new memorial arose when RSA executive discovered the Tasman District Council was poised to “take” the land for commercial purposes. The RSA made a presentation to the Golden Bay Community Board in 2012 and, after public consultation, the council agreed to work with the RSA to create a new park. An invitation to the local iwi, Manawhenua ki Mohua, to participate resulted in a waharoa (gateway) being erected at the park’s entrance. The memorial’s “conflict pillars” commemorate not only wars overseas, but also the New Zealand Wars – a pillar is dedicated to “our former foes”. Funding for the project was sourced from the Lottery Grants Board, the Tasman council, local businesses and other sponsors. Before work started on the park, a Mauri stone was buried and blessed at the main entrance. The park was created using local contractors, local marble, local handmade outdoor seating, local native trees, shrubs and grasses (apart from some native Australian greenery to bring in the Anzac spirit). The main features of the park are: • The conflict pillars commemorate all conflicts in which New Zealanders have been involved - Nga Pakanga Whenua O Mua New Zealand Wars 1843– 72, the South African (Boer) War 1899–1902, World War 1 1914–18, World War 2 1939– 45, Malaya and Borneo 1949–66, Korea 1950–53, Vietnam

A field of Remembrance.

Partners return to WW1 fields The success of their combined efforts last year has inspired the Fields of Remembrance Trust and the Ministry of Education to again support early-learning services in New Zealand’s four-year World War I commemoration. Each early-learning service will be sent a World War I commemoration package containing three white crosses to commemorate the men and women who died serving New Zealand in that conflict. The trust has selected three names to go on the

memorial crosses: • Sgt Dick Travis – New Zealand’s most decorated soldier, killed in action in July 1918. • Staff Nurse Nona Hildyard – died October 23, 1915 on board the SS Marquette after it was hit by a German torpedo in the Mediterranean Sea.. • 2Lt Thomas Grace – killed in action on August 8, 1915 at Chunuk Bair, Gallipoli. The commemoration package aims to inform younger generations and stimulate conversation

about this part of New Zealand’s history. The trust and the ministry hope that getting children and tamariki involved in what is a hands-on commemoration will help pass on the importance of remembering the impact of World War I on New Zealand. Last year around 2500 commemoration packages were delivered to schools and kura for Anzac Day. • Information: Ministry of Education’s dedicated World War I webpages: http://goo.gl/tKkNdj.

Jan Lawrence reckons she’s got the hang of organising poppy days. And, she jokes, she now has the “diploma” to prove it – in the form of a Howick & Pakuranga Times veterans’ community service award. Jan got involved with Howick RSA activities nine years ago when she joined the women’s section. Five years ago she was nominated for the executive committee and this is her fourth year of co-ordinating Poppy Day. “Mike Cole (the then president) asked me if I would take over the poppies; he said it involved only one day,” says Jan. “It’s a huge six-month job. I never let him forget that he said.” The project involves around 500 volunteers dealing with close to 50,000 poppies. Work on the coming Poppy Day started last November, and Jan’s whiteboard went up at the RSA clubrooms at the end of February. Volunteers – including the RSA women’s section, line dancers and mahjong groups – pin the poppies and assemble them in boxes of 500 ready for distribution to stands at retail centres, to schools and small businesses (“there are hundreds of them”) and industrial areas (Macleans College students drop off more than 500 poppies through East Tamaki). Jan Lawrence is also working with the executive committee on the April 5 Anzac Awareness Day when children from local schools are invited to the RSA to talk with special speakers. “We’re trying to incorporate a few younger speakers this year to make people aware that the RSA is not just a place where the old diggers sit with a pint of beer,” she says.

Australian red ensign signifies comradeship at Petone railway ceremony When the flag is raised at the Petone railway station this Anzac Day, it won’t be the New Zealand flag, whatever the outcome of the referendum, Instead an Australian red ensign will be hauled up the tall kauri and jarrah pole. Petone Community Board member and history enthusiast Gerald Davidson says it’s a tradition that goes back to the first Anzac Day memorial at Petone in 1916: “It was suggested in 1915 that Australian

CLUB TRAVEL: PALMERSTON NORTH

Sharks, crocodiles, T-Rex and a touch Neil Grant A city the size of Palmerston North has only so many eating places, so it is important to get out and sample other gastronomic delights, for comparative purposes of course. And, as you will discover, when you find a goodie, you just have to go back to make sure. Betty Green and Mary Hurley are the organisers of Palmerston North’s Cossie Club travel section annual trip. They’ve been at it so long that their trips have that required mix of entertainment, fun, education, rest breaks and toilet stops that keeps the travelling stalwarts coming back for more. Whenever travelling north, Taihape’s Gumboot Manor is the first stop. Good toilets, an easy bus park and good morning tea choices at just the right distance from home make it an essential. And so it was on Monday, February 8th this year when 42 members bade driver John Busch, “Good morning,” once again as they set off for Auckland. Lunchtime hunger was satisfied at “The Shearing Capital of the World”, as Te Kuiti modestly refers to itself. The ever punctual Uzabus pulled up at Parklane Motor Inn in Takapuna at about 5.00pm. The group are happy to do a long day’s travel as long as they have an easy day two. Kelly Tarlton’s was Tuesday’s excursion. Betty notes there have been many changes since she last saw it. This sealife aquarium is a must, she reckons. The conveyor belts are a luxury for travel-weary viewers. Expect close, but safe, encounters with sharks and stingrays, Antarctic displays, seahorse aquariums, and many other marine wonders. The lunch is pretty special, too, it seems. Continuing the educational theme, the War Memorial Museum kept everyone occupied in the afternoon. Then to start the gastronomic side of things, they went to the Bushman’s Grill in

Members of Palmerston North’s Cossie Club travel section pose for a group photo at Butterfly Creek, alongside a friendly T-Rex. Northcote. Betty says this place is so good that they went back there the following Monday and Tuesday nights. Those bushmen must be doing something right. A ferry rides occupied Wednesday. Waiheke Island is considered one of the top 10 must sees in Auckland. Lovely beaches; desirable, if expensive, wines; art galleries and historic reserves are all on hand. The bus trip around the island laid it all out. Birkenhead RSA provided a fitting finish to the day – you can’t beat a fine meal consisting of roast and dessert all for $12, now can you? Butterfly Creek was the next attraction. Here, on Thursday, they found crocodiles and other reptiles, butterflies, wetas and other insects, and most

alarming of all, a display of dinosaurs. And lunch. The afternoon saw them visit a hydrangea nursery. “I’ve never seen such big-headed hydrangeas,” Betty says. Recovering from this, they had a good dinner at the Papatoetoe Club. Silverdale, north of the city, boasts a pioneer village, gardens and shopping. Orewa nearby provided lunch. Then, a swim in the Wairewa hot pools and a drive round the Whangaparoa Peninsula. The Hibiscus Coast RSA was the dinner stop. Back on the ferry on Saturday for a harbour cruise a fine, relaxing and enjoyable way to see the city sights. At Brown’s Bay, people chose whatever they wanted for tea from wherever they wanted to buy it.

Drivers are required, and are entitled to, a day off, and Sunday was John’s day of rest. The travellers did their own thing, then gathered for a fish and chip meal followed by a rousing game of housie. Animal lovers took in the sights at the zoo on Monday morning, balanced by an afternoon trip to Motat in the afternoon, especially for the blokes. This transport, history and science attraction is really one of a kind in New Zealand. Tuesday’s lunch was in the revolving restaurant up the Sky Tower. While most of the dining had been at the economy end of the market till then, fine dining with a view was pretty special. Wednesday’s trip home took the other route via Tirau. Home, and ready to be tucked up, by 5.30.

Everything from petanque to ukuleles at Alexandra Districts Club Springtime in Central Otago sees the orchards ablaze with blossom ranging from purest white to rich pink, depending on the type of fruit being grown there. On Friday 27th September 1957, the Alexandra Horticultural Society held its spring flower show, followed the next day by a parade up the main street, and entertainment in Pioneer Park. Every year since then, the Alexandra Blossom Festival, which extended to a couple of weeks, has drawn crowds from near and far. The Alexandra District Club’s involvement includes the influx of visitors, all intent on having a fine old time. Many are affiliated club members from throughout New Zealand, and others come from places like Dunedin and Invercargill who maintain Alexandra membership for just such occasions when they are on holiday. The club’s bistro is open from Thursday to Sunday. “It’s a busy bistro, well supported by members and their guests,” says club manager, Chrissy Nesbitt. “Rebecca, our chef, and her fabulous helpers have created an affordable and extensive menu catering for all tastes. We also can provide special catering services for such things as weddings, Christmas functions, corporate events and any special occasion you may have.” There is the usual range of adjuncts – pool, darts,

croquet, bowls and fishing for instance, plus some less usual ones, like gentleman singers, petanque, and most recently, a ukulele club. “They started just two or three weeks ago, but they’ll grow. They meet every Sunday for a jam session. “They are just playing for their own enjoyment at the moment, but soon they’ll be putting on items for other members’ enjoyment.” There is also a craft group who meet on Wednesdays and engage in sewing, crochet and embroidery. “There is always something going on at the club, sports, raffles, Thursday night members’ draw. It’s just the place to be if you want a friendly, social, and relaxed atmosphere.” The Alexandra RSA, incorporated with the club, put a float into the blossom festival parade this year and won $500 for the most innovative and decorative entry. Of the 1600 club members, 250 are RSA members. Chrissy is new to the club scene having spent many years in hotels. “I love it. It’s so different – more family oriented. There’s a care factor. The staff, committee and members are very supportive. As you might expect, planning is under way for Christmas and New Year celebrations. There is fun to be had.

CLUB TRAVEL: PAPANUI

Top of the south tour a popular jaunt MONDAY: Twenty six members (including four new members) of the Papanui Club Travel Section departed at 9am from Christchurch with our trip organiser and coach driver Ron Sheppard at the wheel. On a cool but sunny morning we headed north on SH1, passing through familiar country, turned left at the Waipara junction and had a short stop at Culverden for, as someone called it, a pee & tea stop ... or was it (P&T). Off we go again but 10 minutes later, whoa; about turn. Someone left their purse in the tearooms toilet. Luckily it was still there and we were on the road again wending our way through Lewis Pass with recent snow along the roadside and hanging on the tree tops. Turning right at Maruia Junction we followed the Maruia river and then the Upper Buller Gorge river to a lunch stop in Murchison. Parcels from the second hand shop were seen being smuggled on to the bus. Onwards through Kawatiri Junction and the Golden Downs State Forest the land flattened out through the Wai-iti Valley and Richmond area. Those sneaky Nelsonians have stolen some of our road cones to beautify the base of the cliff along the waterfront near Tahunanui. Stabilisation of the cliff face is in progress, and they even worked late one night under floodlights. We arrived in sunny Nelson, to the Harbourside Lodge, our accommodation for the next four nights, located on the waterfront overlooking the marina. We dined at the nearby Anchor Restaurant & Bar, and a feed of whitebait was very popular with many diners. TUESDAY: Awoke to a clear sunny morning and enjoyed the wonderful complementary breakfast provided by the establishment and ready for a 10am departure. Off to the World of Wearable Arts & Classic Car Museum. A colourful display of many costumes and designs of imaginative wearable garments by artists from New Zealand and around the globe. The classic car museum displays vehicles through the ages, and since our last visit another

building has been opened out the back. We moved on to Richmond for lunch, spent some time in the mall and inspected the new block of shops that include a large K-Mart store. From here we travelled back through the city centre and on to the Founders Heritage Park. This is a replica 19th century historic village, with buildings that have been moved here and restored or are look-alike rebuilds. Many of the artifacts on display have been donated by the local residents. Would you like to live the way they did?. Back to our accommodation and spruce up for evening dining at the Honest Lawyer. The beer battered fish, or steak and Guinness pie seemed to be the favourites. Ron also got a chance to practice his coach backing skills in the dark!. WEDNESDAY: 9am departure, and after an earlier breakfast we headed off back through Richmond, Motueka, and the grape and hop growing area of Riwaka, over the Takaka hill (791 metres), through the predominantly dairying valley area to Takaka town. Takaka is the gateway to Golden Bay and is an art centre of New Zealand, with many artists living and working in the area. Time out for a look at the shopping, have some lunch and then on to Te Waikoropupu (Pupu) springs. This is the largest cold water spring in the southern hemisphere, discharging a staggering 14,000 litres of water per second. An easy walk through the bush on the upgraded track and boardwalks to the springs, and a round trip back to the car park. We then checked out the Pohara marina and rock formations, and Ron practised his backing skills again. An icecream stop back in Takaka, then off over the hill back to Nelson. To round off a long day out we ended up at Smugglers Pub and Cafe at Tahunanui and enjoyed another great meal, while a fire flickered away in the centre of the table. THURSDAY: Awoke to low cloud and rain, on the bus at 10am and retraced our way back through

A visit to the World of Wearable Arts and Classic Car Museum (top) and a tour of Woollaston at Mahana winery were highlights for the members of Papanui Club travel section. Richmond to Mapua. Located at the Waimea River estuary, where in 1934 over 450.000 cases of apples were shipped from the wharf. In the 1960s most of the apples were now being shipped from Nelson and the last went from Mapua in 1964. The large cool store is now home to several galleries, artisans workshops and the boatshed cafe. Off again via Ruby Bay and Tasman, had a look at Port Motueka, then into Motueka town for lunch and more retail therapy. We then went off via a back road through Braeburn and Upper Moutere, an area well known for its artists and sculptors, to the village of Mahana, and eventually the winery “Woollaston at Mahana”, and were taken on a tour of the winery. Built entirely of concrete, set into the hillside, with tussock and shrubs growing on the curved roof is this 18-metre high, four-level, gravity fed winery. Following through the wine making process from delivery of the grapes, to the French-made oak fermenting barrels to the Italian bottling plant that can do 2500 bottles per hour. Each of these operations is on a different floor. The first grapes were planted in 2000, the first harvest in 2005 and now the winery has an annual production of approximately 20.000 cases of wine. The lowest level also has the facilities to hold functions and cater for wedding breakfasts. We were offered some wine tasting in the lower cellar before being taken back up to the sales area

where there was a display of artist Toss Wollaston’s works. After making our way back to nelson and a short rest time, it was off to dine at the Nelson Suburban Club & RSA where the day was rounded off with a four-course buffet meal. FRIDAY: Well, all good things must come to an end, so the saying goes, as we board the bus at 9am heading for home but, as we exited the street, turned left this time to go via Blenheim and the east coast route. Wending our way through the Wangamoa forestry and logging areas, the lush green pastures of the Rai valley cattle country, through the grape growing and winery area of Renwick. The majority vote decided to forego a stop in Blenheim and to carry on to Kaikoura for lunch. Travelling through Peter Yelland wine country and out to the tussock covered sand dunes along the east coast, past the seal colonies on the left with the snow covered seaward Kaikoura mountains on the right. The lunch stop at Kaikoura, the whale watch centre of New Zealand, resulted in more parcels going south. Finally the last leg of our round trip along SH 1 through familiar country again and home to the Papanui Club. A hearty vote of thanks and applause to Ron for his organisation of another wonderful trip. Really enjoyed by all. – BARRY MOULD

World champs Bernie’s ‘final goal’ Karen Phelps After a year off from playing competitively, darts champion Bernie Smith has come back onto the scene with a bang winning the South Island men’s singles title in the 2016 Clubs New Zealand darts championships. A member of the New Brighton Club, Bernie admits he lost enthusiasm for the sport after the earthquakes and although he continued to throw darts at home he no longer had the drive to compete. “Sometimes there were earthquakes while I was playing and I used to go right off it and couldn’t play. It unnerved me,” he says. But Bernie says having a year off from the sport he loves felt strange and although he was a bit nervous coming back after playing the Canterbury Classic tournament, where he placed third, his

New Brighton Club member Bernie Smith is all smiles after winning the South Island men’s singles title at the Clubs NZ darts championships. confidence returned. Playing darts runs in the blood – both his father Henry and brother Lennie are also

darts champions having both won New Zealand’s titles. It’s not surprising therefore that Bernie was introduced to the sport early but although he played at home in the garage and in the pub with friends, Bernie didn’t start playing competitions until his late teens. He started playing at pub social leagues, didn’t do too badly and so carried on, he says modestly. He started playing more seriously when he joined the Richmond Workingmen’s Club and later the Woolston Workingmen’s Club. Over the years Bernie has won a large number of titles including the Clubs New Zealand championships singles, New Zealand Darts Council singles, New Zealand Darts Council men’s pairs twice and the Clubs New Zealand South Island singles three times. Bernie has also headed overseas to play for New Zealand in New Zealand Darts Council teams travelling to France, Australia, USA, Singapore, Fiji

and Japan. “Darts has been pretty good to me,” he says. Although he acknowledges winning feels great it is the social aspect that appeals to him just as much and he says he’s made some good mates. When he has a big competition coming up he returns to his roots – the garage – practising for an hour each day. His advice for other darts players is simple: “Just try and enjoy the game. It gets quite nerve wracking but if you can relax that’s the key. It’s the hardest part but the most important part of playing darts.” Next up for Bernie will be the Clubs New Zealand nationals in July followed by the New Zealand Darts Council nationals in August. Bernie’s next goal is to head to England to play in the World Darts Championship. “I’ve never been and it’s the only thing in darts I haven’t achieved so that’s my final goal.”

Darts runs in the blood for mother and daughter She admits that she never practices yet Tara Mears has proved her metal as a darts champion once again taking out the South Island women’s singles title in the 2016 Clubs New Zealand darts championships. This year her win was made even sweeter by also taking home the women’s pairs title with daughter Nicole, 26, in the first major competition the two have competed in together. “I was more proud of her than of myself,” she says. “It’s my daughter that drags me to all the tournaments – she’s darts mad.” Both are members of City Club in Nelson, encouraged to join by Tara’s father Errol, 83, who played for New Zealand in the seventies with wife Ollie. Tara says it was Errol who encouraged her to play darts from a young age.

“Dad has pushed me all the way. As soon as I could hold a dart in my hand dad had me at the board. I loved it and used to say to dad I couldn’t go to school because I had to practise my darts,” she says with a laugh. Tara has mainly focused on playing tournaments in the local region due to family and other commitments, which make it more challenging to travel further afield. She has previously won the women’s singles title in the Clubs New Zealand darts championships in 2012 – the only other time she’s ever competed in this competition. Tara twice competed in the New Zealand Masters Games coming runner up each time and admits she has her sights fixed on winning as her next goal. Tara also plays with her brother Kelvin, another family darts champion. The pair is set to defend their mixed pairs title in the upcoming Seddon Shield competition

Classic boaties land striped marlin The Whangaroa Sport Fishing Club held its annual contest for the older ladies of the sea; the classic boats contest, which this year was re-defined as being for launches 30 or more years old, rather than the 40 years previously used. This may have helped the number of participants as we had an unprecedented 11 boats and 25 anglers take part. The weather was fair and this year after an absence of a few years, a marlin was landed for the contest. It was caught by Alwin Haagner from Auckland, a member of the Big Fish Fishing Club, who fished with his friend and skipper Tony Gyde. They offered the fish a live bait out the back of Stephenson’s Island and weighed in the resulting striped marlin at Whangaroa, at 104.7kg. Charter boat Diomedea also did well during the contest with angler Jeanette Franks, wife of the skipper Dave, tagging and releasing a kingfish, mako

shark and striped marlin, and also weighing in a kingfish of 10.82kg caught on 6kg line using a live bait at the Cavalli Islands. Willie McIntyre skipper of Waima Star also caught a good fish, landing a yellowfin tuna of 31.8kg on 37kg line, using a Kilwell fruit salad lure trolled at the back of Stephenson’s Island. While Willie played the fish for 25 minutes his wife Jane took a turn in the wheel-house. The prizes were sponsored by Cater Marine in Opua and of course Alwin, Jeanette and Willie won prizes and trophies. Alwin had the heaviest marlin, the fish with most IGFA points and the International Paints Toplac Trophy for the heaviest fish of the contest. Jeanette had the heaviest kingfish and also won the Whangaroa Health Services Trophy with her two tagged fish.

Over 73 boats took part in a mass start to the Waitara Offshore Fishing Club’s annual competition. 239 anglers on 73 boats made for a spectacular start to the Waitara Offshore Fishing Club’s Panasonic Annual Competition in February. With $40,000 in prizes up for grabs competition was fierce to land the big one. A total of 281 fish weighed in for the day across five species, snapper, gurnard, kahawai, blue cod and tuna. The lucky anglers hooking the heaviest fish

included a 7.87kg snapper, 5.62kg Tuna, 2.04kg blue cod, and 3.2kg kahawai. A mass start of all the boats crossing the bar made for a spectacular sight, with the Coastguard setting up a portable base at the river mouth to make sure everyone crossed over the bar and back safely. The Coastguard also deployed the Todd Energy Rescue Boat for the day to keep an eye on the amateur fishing fleet.

Club a hub for community events Palmerston North Cossie The Palmerston North Cosmopolitan Club is further cementing its place in the community with a range of important events, including ANZAC Day commemorations, scheduled to take place this year, says club manager Desiree Garrigan. It will be the fourth year that the club has hosted ANZAC Day events for the city with the Dawn Parade march and second parade later in the morning both commencing from the club. A $5 breakfast and a morning tea will be held on the day at the club as well as entertainment throughout the afternoon by live band Joint Effort. On 27 May the Manawatu Jazz Festival Friday night celebrations will be held at the club with one of the major bands taking part in the festival playing live. In 2017 the club will hold the Clubs New Zealand North Island Men’s Golf Tournament. Desiree says that the club has always focused on playing a significant part in the community, including making the club more user friendly for families, children and women. The club has reinstated its annual children’s Christmas party, which is proving very popular, making for a great family day out. The children’s menu at the club’s Pirani’s restaurant has been revamped with fun items named specifically to appeal to children including Crabby Burger and Chips (which references SpongeBob SquarePants in its title), Minions and Chips (mini hotdogs and chips) and Not For Nana Ice Cream Sundae, after club staff noticed that when kids ordered this particular desert

Nanas found it hard to keep their spoon out of the bowl. The club has also been offering more options for women to enjoy the club with speakers and events held last year such as style guru Jackie O’Fee and a Pink Ribbon Breakfast for women to mark breast cancer awareness week. “The club provides a safe place for women to meet their friends,” says Desiree. “We believe there is a market for women who do not want to go into town but still want a night out with friends with good entertainment suited to their needs.” Younger people have also been joining the club in greater numbers. The Palmerston North Cosmopolitan Club has introduced an intermediate membership for young people from the age of 12. “We have some very good young bowlers, 8 ball and darts players but we recognised that they couldn’t participate in club competitions so now they can. We hope this initiative will also encourage other young people into our sports adjuncts and also to learn the values of the club,” says Desiree. “We also have more members joining the club in the 20-35 age group. They can come and have a drink and meal in a safe environment as well as play a game of snooker, which has become quite popular, with their friends.” The initiatives are part of a move to bring the next generation into the club after the club reached a big milestone ,celebrating its 125th anniversary a couple of years ago. Established in 1889 one point of difference for the Palmerston North Cosmopolitan Club is that it has fought to retain its permanent charter, which the club sees as a valuable part of its heritage. With the club’s new mezzanine bar recently

New Plymouth initiatives make it ‘a club like no other’ A number of new initiatives and improvements, driven by recently retired president Ian Gyde, are helping the New Plymouth Club membership to grow, according to acting club president John Yandle. Among the changes the club’s popular initiative of subsidizing taxi rides to and from the club has received a further boost when the subsidy was increased to $10 per ride, meaning people can continue to visit the club safely. Investment in the venue has also been made with the club boasting a new computerized till system using Swift POS, which is increasing efficiencies. The new system allows members to simply swipe their membership card at the door to enter draws as well as benefit from the club’s loyalty system which sees $1 credited to the card for every $50 spent as well as access to brand specials.

The club offers draws on Thursday and Friday night jackpotting after a maximum of six weeks to $1500 for the larger of the draws. John says it is not unusual for the maximum jackpot to be reached. In the restaurant, menu boards are now computerized screens. The restaurant offers weekly specials as well as the usual favourites such as seafood baskets, burgers, roast of the day, rib eye fillet and lamb shanks as well as some international dishes. In a bid to increase its profile in the community and better communicate what the club offers a marketing firm has been employed. Initiatives such as open days have so far helped to raise awareness of the important part the club plays in the region. For example the club offers five local schools $1000 scholarships to enable promising young students to

further their studies. John says the club will continue to seek to communicate opportunities it is offering that help to benefit the community. John admits he may be biased but he reckons the New Plymouth Club is one of the best in the country. It is certainly ranking highly in certain areas such as its sporting adjuncts. The New Plymouth Club and recently held the 43rd National Chartered Clubs Outdoor Bowls Tournament with 136 teams of four which was run with very successfully with the assistance of the Taranaki Bowling Centre, says John. The club has also had several of its junior members competing in both 8 pool and snooker including some that have played in overseas tournaments and against ranked professional players with very good results. The club currently holds the Clubs New Zealand tournament trophies for euchre, cribbage and 500. The New Plymouth Club is over 100 years old after celebrating its centenary in 2008. “We offer a restaurant with uninterrupted views out to the Tasman Sea and the New Plymouth coastline, excellent bar facilities and best of all great staff who welcome patrons and visitors with a smile and go that one step further to make sure everyone is happy,” says John. “The New Plymouth Club is certainly a place like no other.”
