When Upper Hutt Plunket staff and volunteers decided to celebrate the organisation’s 107th birthday by staging its annual devonshire-tea fundraiser at the Upper Hutt Cossie Club, they thought they would like to invite a guest of honour. Who else but Madeline Anderson? After all, she’s 107 and she’s an Upper Hutt Cossie member. Madeline obliged and helped Plunket raise more than $500. Here she is with five of her Plunket friends (from left), Rachael Hickson, Kylie Thorpe, Dawn Nobbs, Pauline Smith and Beth Moroney.
‘Bit of fun’ but no joke Karen Phelps It started as a bit of fun at the Avondale RSA, but after a decade the RSA Idol competition has got so popular four RSAs are now involved and the event is becoming increasingly competitive. The competition, which is open only to amateurs, was started by the Avondale RSA many years ago. Club secretary-manager Louise Ockey says the inspiration came from similar competitions on television.. Last year the Henderson RSA and the Glen Eden RSA joined in to create a West RSA Idol competition. This year the New Lynn RSA came on board. Now the West Auckland RSAs are considering a West Auckland-versus-South Auckland competition next year as the event’s popularity continues to grow. Theft from clubs remains a significant problem. Today, somewhere, someone is stealing from a club.
How to catch a thief Theft from clubs remains a significant problem. Today, somewhere, someone is stealing from a club. Every time I am called in to find answers to the loss of club funds, I am reminded about the need for robust controls and systems to detect and prevent fraud. Clubs that don’t have good systems will become a victim sooner or later, just as those who leave their house windows and doors open will one day find everything gone. Clubs, in particular, need good systems because they are cash businesses. System audits are not done to get rid of managers or to catch them out on something. They are about working with club managers and committees to prevent fraud, and make it easy to identify when it does happen. System audits should: * Establish a clear money trail. You should be able to track the flow of every dollar that passes through the club. I call it a money snail trail. * Make sure things are done efficiently by using the best technology. * Make things more transparent. Every club has gossips. Making things transparent takes oxygen from those who having nothing better to do than undermine the good work of others. All clubs should have their management systems reviewed at least every three years. That review should reveal holes that can be exploited, and which systems are not being put into practice. I have been doing system audits for 15 years, and in every case, they result in a reduction in theft -

would-be thieves know things are so tight they won’t get away with it. I have the advantage of being an outsider looking in at clubs’ accounting and control systems. Sometimes fresh eyes will see tell-tale signs in the behaviour of a staff member or a manager that those working within a club cannot see. I come in with no preconceptions and without any relationships that may influence my judgment. Committees are not doing their job if they are not reviewing their systems regularly. Club officials have a responsibility to protect club property. Good systems protect club cash. * Joanne Newman specialises in club accounting and forensic auditing. The Palmerston North Cosmopolitan Club has been through some very bad years, but has come out the other side. And it recently reached a milestone when it celebrated its 125th anniversary. “This club is in a very good position now, but that hasn’t happened through good luck,” says president Richard Green. “It has happened through hard work by the manager, the staff and the executive.” Around 300 guests were at the anniversary celebrations, which began with a glass of bubbles, nibbles and photographs. Club staff were dressed in period costume, and Clubs New Zealand president Tom Fisher addressed the gathering. The anniversary cake was cut by a threesome – Keith Edwards, at 93 the oldest active member; Tom Drinkwater, the longest registered member (65 years); and Benjamin Warby, 16, who joined under the junior membership initiative. Feilding High School’s wearable art show, Evento, presented a showcase of designs. Richard Green says it was a night when the club’s history was recalled and many tales were told. The club was founded with 44 members in 1889 as the Palmerston North Workingmen’s Club and Mutual Society of Arts. Frederick Pirani, who was the founder and first president, had arrived in Palmerston North in 1884. He was a councillor, member of Parliament, and published the Manawatu Daily Standard,

Richard Green, Palmerston North Cossie Club, speaks at the 125-year anniversary celebrations.
A provisional charter was obtained in 1888 and a permanent charter was granted in 1889. The membership included gentlemen, bushmen, solicitors, carters and bank managers. The club has fought to retain its permanent charter which, says Richard Green, is a very valuable asset. ‘’There are not many clubs with a permanent charter left. The Government has tried to get rid of them, but we fought that, mainly for its historical value. It’s a valuable part of our heritage.’’ Life has not always been smooth for the club. Fire has twice gutted the premises (not long after the club was formed, and again in the early 1920s), there have been five changes in location, and a name change to the Palmerston North Workingmen’s Club and Literary Institute. Fears that prohibition was to be introduced led to the “Literary Institute” change so that the club could establish a library. Land was bought and new premises were opened in Cuba St in 1904. Membership then stood at 406, and by 1912 had grown to 942. Bigger premises were needed, but plans were shelved because of the outbreak of World War 1. It is not recorded how many club members served overseas, but they were kept on the roll and did not have to pay a subscription during that time. In 1927 the club name was changed to Palmerston North Cosmopolitan Club. By 1942 there were 1099 members. Sixty-three of them members enlisted in World War 2 and members voluntarily imposed a levy of one shilling a month to provide comfort parcels to servicemen. A spruce-up before the 1953 royal visit was marred when many members lost relatives and friends in the Tangiwai rail disaster on Christmas Eve. Richard Green recalls a story from 1967: “It occurred at the time 10 o’clock closing was introduced. It tells of a number of bandsmen enjoying an after-hours drink when a police sergeant and a constable were seen to approach. The members descended to the cellar, glasses in hand, with the last one down closing the cellar door. They sat in the dark drinking and smoking, but the sergeant was a non-smoker, detected the smell of smoke, opened the cellar door, and booked them all.” Women were admitted as members around 197273. They had previously been allowed in the club just once a month for a dinner dance and could not be served at the bar. In 2000 Julie Fabish was elected the first woman president and, in 2008 Desiree Gavigan was appointed the first female manager.

Signing-in crucial over the holidays With the festive season approaching I know you will all be busy, so my message as the year draws to a close is short and sweet. As usual, one of the main issues facing clubs in the festive/holiday season will be monitoring visitors coming through club the clubs and, in particular, signing them into clubs. I don’t need to remind you that all visitors to a club need to be identified. If – or when – a police sting arrives at a club’s premises, all member clubs need to have ensured that every person on the premises is a financial member or a signed-in visitor. It’s an important point if clubs are to comply with legislation and avoid problems – and well worth remembering as the silly season come upon us. This is a busy time, and all clubs must be vigilant on this issue to ensure they are fully compliant. Speaking of compliance, all clubs should by now have adapted their constitutions to ensure they adhere to the new Sale of Liquor Act, which came into effective from December 18, 2013. Both of these issues are examples of the type of strategic planning that is going to be a vital for the future of clubs.

President, Clubs New Zealand As this year draws to a close and we head into next year the Clubs New Zealand board is going to look at how we can communicate better with individual members of our clubs to inform them directly of the Clubs NZ organisation. We are doing this so that we can all enjoy an even more prosperous 2015 as the movement continues to grow. I wish all club members, executives and staff a merry Christmas a happy New Year, and look forward to seeing you in 2015.

Thames visit full on for Hamilton Cossie clubbies HAMILTON COSSIE A trip to the Thames area was one of nine outings the Hamilton Cosmopolitan Club travel section has achieved over the past 12 months. Because a number of members could not get away for the weekend in March, the party chose to go by van and chairperson Trish Gouk’s car. The action was full on. First on the agenda on the Friday morning was the Toyota factory – most conveniently, placed across the road from the motel – with morning tea included. This was followed by a visit to the gold mine and stamper battery and the Butterfly and Orchid Gardens (with muffins and tea/coffee as part of the deal). After booking in at the motel the group had dinner at the local club – a very welcoming group with first-class food, says Trish.
On Saturday morning it was off to the market, then on the train for the Waikino-Waihi trip and lunch at the Waihi Beach Memorial RSA. It’s well worth the effort just to see this club, and Ohinemuri Wines is a must, says Trish. The travellers finished the day with a stop at the Cheese Barn (at Matatoki), where they enjoyed sampling and comparing a selection of cheese varieties. Dinner was at the club that night and, as part of the entertainment, some of the Hamilton Cossie crew demonstrated the art of line dancing. Sunday morning was spent at the Goldfield Shopping Centre, with some of the group grabbing a ride on the mini steam-trains. Lunch at Ngatea was accompanied by a visit to the water gardens and, on the way back to Hamilton, there was time for a stop at the Department of Conservation establishment at Miranda.
The Cheese Barn at Matatoki (left) and old gold mine stamper battery (right) were points of interest for the Hamilton Cosmopolitan Club on a recent visit to the Thames area.

Kaikoura Seafest a salty sojourn STOKES VALLEY COSSIE On Friday, October 4, 17 members of the Stokes Valley Cosmopolitan Club travel adjunct set off for a weekend of fun, food and frivolity (that’s another term for beer and wine) They were picked up by Co-op Shuttles on time at 6am and delivered to Wellington airport to board a Jetstar flight to Christchurch. The bookings were made through Expedia – great to deal with and no booking fees. On arrival at Christchurch Airport, the group was met by Ace Rentals and taken to the depot where they picked up three Toyota Previa vans hired at a very good price. The convoy hit the road for Rangiora where a booking had been made at the Monteiths Brewery Bar for brunch. These people were so efficient they rang while the group was on its way to check on progress and estimate time of arrival so that all the pre-ordered meals would be ready at the same time – great service when serving 17 people. On through the beautiful countryside of North Canterbury where none of the group had been for many years. The travellers were amazed at the spread of vineyards. The group got to Kaikoura early in the afternoon and booked into accommodation at the Lobster Inn. The town was buzzing with the Seafood Festival and there was not a spare bed to be had. The Stokes Valley visitors enjoyed a well earned beer or two in the Lobster Inn Tavern right next door. The stunning scenery of the snow-covered Inland Kaikouras seemed just an arm’s length away out the window. Tea was a “make your own arrangements” deal before retiring for the night in anticipation of a big day on Saturday. Saturday morning dawned with great weather and it was off to enjoy the festival. A large and wellbehaved crowd enjoyed good food, great beer and wine, and entertainment from a line-up that included Midge Marsden. The group wandered back to the Lobster Inn mid-afternoon with the intention of a “nanny-nap” before dinner. The courtesy coach delivered them back into town and a great steak was devoured along with more of that liquid that aids the digestion. Sunday morning, and the convoy motored north, heading for Picton. There was a brunch stop at The Store – a cafe sited right on the Kaikoura coast with magnificent views. At Picton, the homeward-bound group got rid of the rental vehicles and booked into Bluebridge

They sailed to Wellington to be met by Co-op Shuttles which delivered them home to Stokes Valley. Big fish start biting after stormy start PAPAKURA CLUB It wasn’t the most auspicious start for the 18th annual Papakura Club fishing trip to Great Barrier Island over the October 2-4 weekend. The Sealink ferry coped superbly with the 35-knot winds and rain on the crossing from Auckland, but the conditions cut out opportunities for the 26-strong group to have a practice run before the big competition the next day. “A few people got a quick hour’s fishing that day, but they were in pretty quick for a hot shower and a cuppa,” says trip organiser Neville Cobbald. The next day proved little better with winds blowing 50 knots and 1.5 to two-metre waves crashing into the shore at Tryphena, from where the group usually departs. Instead, they drove to Medlands Beach, over the other side of the island, and found the water as smooth as glass. All the boats were launched and the competition began in earnest. There were four teams of five and one of six. Neville says safety is paramount in the challenging island environment – no fishing before 5am or after 6pm, and skippers have to advise him of their fishing spots for the day. The competition began with the usual initiation for newbies – one newbie had to down a dry WeetBix and the other had to eat pilchard bait that had been on board for two days. Competitors are permitted to catch only five
snapper; it’s a self-imposed target to ensure the trip has minimal impact on the natural environment, says Neville. Because nothing under 2kg is allowed to be kept, a few fishers went home empty handed. A 20-pounder (9.1kg) or greater is the main aim, but is no easy task. Two competitors achieved the target this year, with 9.64kg and 9.22kg fish. The biggest snapper catch (27.5lbs), remains a personal best for club member Michael ‘Tooley’ Chipman. The main individual prize for the competition is the CC Memorial Cup, named after Neville’s brother, the late Colin Cobbald. It goes to the person catching the highest accumulated weight of snapper. This year Neville’s son, Stewart, 33, who has been eyeing the prize for about 12 years, took home the title with four snapper totalling 18kg. Each fisher’s points are calculated to determine the team with the highest and lowest accumulated weights. This year’s winning team clocked an average weight of 8.926kg of snapper and won $600. There was a three-way tie for the first time for the lowest average weight of 6.828kg. Leftover drinks were combined into a pitcher and the losing team members had to drink a glass as their “prize”. In the old fellas-versus-young fellas contest, the youngies’ top 10 snapper totalled 60.68kg to the oldies’ 54.14kg. However, the old fellas still hold a 3-2 lead in the competition. The trophy is a hunk of kauri wood carved into the shape of the island by a young fella four years ago. “Because it came from a dam, it’s called the ‘dam
Wild weather failed to stop the hardy members of the Papakura Club on their annual fishing trip to Great Barrier Island. The victorious fishermen show off the silverware and the `dam log of wood’. log of wood’,” says Neville. “We total all the points from the 35-year-olds and under, and from those over 35. It hangs up at the club and gives a good atmosphere as we give each other a hard time.” Neville and Colin Cobbald initiated the fishing trip years ago after seeing the catch of a land-based fishing club, which included 20lb snapper and large kingfish. The pair asked around and found that the catches came from Great Barrier Island, and the Papakura Club annual fishing trip was born. Neville Cobbald says competitors are as keen as
ever, and there’s a waiting list of clubbies to join the trip. “We’re mad boat-fishermen, but this is something different as we fish only off the rocks or a beach on this trip. Rock fishing is pretty hard work, but we make it even harder because it’s a pretty social weekend as well. Because it’s a fairly hard weekend, the guys always say they’ve had enough when they return, but a week later they’re asking when the next one is,” he says,

Cruisers enjoy tropical treat at Vanuatu STOKES VALLEY COSMOPOLITAN On the May 5 this year, 10 Stokes Valley Cosmopolitan embers boarded the P & O cruise ship, Pacific Pearl, in Auckland and sailed for Vanuatu. The group had booked the cruise through Harvey World Travel Lambton Quay, Wellington branch, with Emma Herbert doing a great job of organising all of the detail. The first four days were spent at sea sailing to the furthest away port of call at Champagne Bay, where the holidayers spent the day swimming, snorkelling, checking out the craft items on sale from the locals, and having a general wander around the Island. It was very warm and the lure of a cold beer back on board had some of taking the ship’s tenders back in the mid-afternoon. Overnight they sailed for Pentecost Island, famous for its island form of bungy jumping. Mad buggers – there’s no stretch in the vines they use, so a face full of dirt is standard. Again, very warm around 35 degrees, so most of the group needed to stay in the shade when not swimming in the 27-degree sea, which was beautiful. The locals again had lots of goods on display and very entertaining groups singing and dancing, plus hangi-style, cooked food. The thought of a cold one and real food back on board won the vote again. The next day was spent at Port Vila with the ship coming alongside. The Stokes Valley group took one of the dozens of shuttle vans driven by the locals into the township and soon found the huge duty-free store they had been told about. Super cheap prices, such as 1125ml Jim Beam $15. After the shopping (which was all delivered back to the ship for collection back in Auckland), they were fortunate to be approached by one of the very friendly locals who offered to take them on a fourhour tour of the main sights for $80. He was the best tour guide you could hope for, with a real passion and enthusiasm for his country. It was Sunday (Mothers’ Day) and he really went out of his way to treat the women. The ship then sailed for Mystery Island, the southern-most island of the Vanuatu group. The weather had changed to the point where sea conditions were too rough for the ship’s boats to ferry people ashore, so the captain decided to start steaming back to Auckland, which took the next two days and nights. On board, the group was enjoying fantastic food served by two waiters dedicated to their table who looked after their needs every evening. During the day, the travellers either went to the self-serve buffet or full-service restaurant. There was a diverse range of entertainment during the day into the evening before dinner, and shows every night after dinner. Solo artists such as Pete the Piano man and Dan, a singer musician who would give Donovan a run for his money. On-board service was terrific, with the “cold ones” never more than a hovering waiter away. The group thoroughly recommends cruising as the most relaxing way to have a holiday.

Fortuna makes it easy to race a horse Every horse that thoroughbred syndication company Fortuna Ltd has sent to the races this racing season has greeted the judge. “It has been a fabulous outcome for our many owners,” says Fortuna principal John Galvin. “Since August 1, Highly Likely, Sir Darci, Prince Henry, Windborne and Darci’s Dream have all won for us. Three-year-old filly Darci’s Dream also earned valuable “black type” for her owners by winning the Canterbury Belle Stakes at Riccarton.” Galvin says the philosophy of Fortuna, which he
established in 2007, is to involve as many people as it can in the thrill and excitement of owning a thoroughbred racehorse. “We want to make it easy for people to be involved and have the confidence to do so. We put a lot of effort into acquiring nicely bred, athletic young horses that have the physical characteristics necessary to be a competitive racehorse. “Then we have some of the best people in New Zealand, headed up by Matamata trainer Jason Bridgman, preparing and training our horses. We
back that up by having them ridden by leading jockeys, and, finally, we adopt the highest standards of communication and financial transparency with our clients.” Fortuna also races its horses in Singapore where they are prepared by former New Zealand champion trainer Mark Walker, who is based there. “The reason we race in Singapore is that the prizemoney is fabulous,” says Galvin. “Some of our clients want to race horses only in New Zealand so that they can go to the races to
watch them race; others prefer to chase the higher prizemoney in Singapore. “Many of our owners have a foot in both camps with a share or two in New Zealand- based horses as well as shares in Singapore-based horses.” Getting involved in a Fortuna syndicate is easy, he says. Bathurst theme makes a big hit CROMWELL TOWN & COUNTRY Neil McDowall, the new secretary manager of the Cromwell Town & Country Club, says he is putting the needs of members first. A chef by trade, McDowall has spent six years managing the Te Anau Club and says that moving north is definitely warmer (we think he was smiling at the time) A number of initiatives are in the pipeline with aim of ensuring members have a better experience than they have had before at the club, he says. The Bathurst event at the club was a celebration of the great Bathurst 1000 race. It was done in style with a projector so that everyone could view the race, and share in the food and giveaways (which included a ‘Smart TV’. The club is also looking at resurrecting it’s spud growing competition in which the heaviest spud is auctioned off for charity. Neil McDowall says a club member has also suggested a four-wheel-drive rally, which may also be a possibile new event if there is enough support. “We would also like to involve other local clubs in what we are doing, and an event like that might be the way to do it,” he says. The Cromwell Town & Country Club has a steady membership of around 1000. Renovation of the toilets and the entrance-way has made the venue more comfortable and modern, he says. There is talk of renovating the kitchen, bar and restaurant areas but nothing has been confirmed and, at this stage, he says it is just in the idea phase. Set in a winning spot right on the shore of the Kawarau arm of Lake Dunstan, club members enjoy stunning views of the lake. People can park their boat and come into the club for lunch, or there is an outdoor area where they can relax and enjoy the sun. The restaurant serves snacks and meals, people you can place a bet on your favourite sport at the club TAB, play a game of darts or pool, or just relax in the comfort of the large lounge and take in the views over the lake and the surrounding vineyards. “Our aim is to provide a comfortable relaxed and friendly atmosphere where members and guests can kick back and enjoy each others company, ” says Neil McDowall.

Exciting holiday programme on offer OAMARU CLUB A $2.1 million renovation completed two years ago and an exciting programme of events leading up to Christmas and New Year makes the Oamaru Club a place to be over the holiday season. Events planned leading into 2015 include a music show on November 28, with music from The Eagles and Queen, the club’s annual children’s Christmas party, and the Christmas cabaret with a live band, The Grizzlies, helping members see in the new year in style. The club, which is in Severn St, Oamaru, the club provides entertainment, restaurant and bar facilities to its members as well as giving back to the community. Active sections include snooker, table tennis, indoor and outdoor bowls, cards and darts. Club facilities include 18 pokie machines and a
full-service TAB. Snooker and pool tables can be used free of charge. Regular raffle nights are held from 5pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays; these include a popular money raffle where members buy a ticket for the chance to win first prize of $100. Tuesdays and Thursdays see the membership lucky draw with a jackpotting cash prize that can build up to $3000. There is live music every Saturday. ‘Revitalised’ choice MOTUEKA MEMORIAL RSA The Motueka Memorial RSA is in the process of taking control of its kitchen and restaurant, employing its own chef, and revitalising the menu. Anatoki salmon, lamb shanks braised in red wine, and lemon and thyme marinated chicken breast with greek salad and home-made fruit chutney are some of what’s on offer. “Members were asking us for more food options, particularly more healthy options, and we will be seeking to deliver these as well as enhancing the presentation of our food in general,” says club manager Bernee Fransen. The Buffer Drummond Restaurant is named after the club’s longest serving president. “He was quite a character and was president for 30 years,” says Bernee. “He made such a contribution to the club it was appropriate to name the restaurant in his memory.”
Chef Robert Harding brings many years of experience in the industry and Bernee says he has developed a “cult following” through his innovative and tasty cuisine. The new restaurant will offer a blackboard menu plus carvery, buffet, bistro meals and takeaway options. Favourites such as a daily roast of the day, sirloin steak and fish of the day will continue to feature strongly in the new menu. There is RSA also a special menu for kids. By taking control back of the restaurant, the RSA has also been able to negotiate better deals with suppliers resulting in even more competitively priced meals, says Bernee Fransen.. The restaurant is open seven days and can seat 120 people comfortably, which makes it the largest restaurant in the area, says Bernee. The club has 10 beers on tap as well as a lot of non-alcoholic drink options. Facilities also include nine gaming machines

Concept plans for the exterior of the Timaru Town & Country Club’s new restaurant. The building project will start in late January and is expected to take just three months to complete.
New restaurant creates stir in Timaru Left: A view of the interior of the planned new restaurant.
TIMARU TOWN & COUNTRY More attention to food has seen the Timaru Town & Country Club increase its turnover and membership base. “We’ve been doing special food deals – $10 lunches and $15 evening meals – to bring people into the club,” says secretary manager Vince Gardner. “We’ve managed this by negotiating better deals with suppliers. It’s proved a winning formula,” He says revenue across the club has risen as people have been drawn inside the door, led by their stomachs, then choose to use the other services on offer, such as the TAB, gaming machines and the bar. The club is now planning a new kitchen and restaurant, which Gardner says will help to unify the it – the present facilities are on the second floor. The second floor will be converted into a function room, and the restaurant and kitchen facilities will be brought downstairs into the heart of the club. Plans have been put together by a local design agency
and the club membership voted unanimously for the renovations to go ahead. The new restaurant will overlook the golf course
and will include a café. It will be set up to cater to those wanting a quick bite, and will have buffet options for those who want to linger.
The club also plans to widen its drink options i and will include more upmarket wines to cater to new tastes. The new restaurant will be open seven days a week for lunch, dinner, and morning and afternoon teas. The project will start in late January/early February, and is due for completion three months later. The aim is to also draw more young people into the club. “Food is the predominant reason people go out now,” says Vince Gardner. “Within the club market, people’s tastes are shifting upwards, so we will offer upmarket options as well as the tried and true. “Members of our club are quite excited about it and the momentum behind it has been huge, and surprised even me. “It will allow us to cater to a growing market of need for more dining-out options. We are noticing growth as we are offering people what they want.”
satisfies hunger for more food options and the Alec Dawson Trust Lounge. Complete with leather couches, a coffee table, a coffee machine and books, this chill-out zone is seen as a fitting memorial to Alec Dawson who was a long-term member of the club. Bernee Fransen, who took over as manager last July after various roles in the club for the past 15 years, says the RSA has had a good year, “Growth has been amazing with 20-25 new members each month.” She says this is partly the result of the club extending its hours – it is now open from 2.30pm10.30pm Sunday to Thursday and 11am-12pm Friday and Saturday. But she also sees the growth as a reflection of the many younger people joining the club as it continues to work on being user-friendly. The club has reached out to the local community by hosting a group for newcomers to the town where they can meet and share information. A 50-plus walking group also meets at the club.

Trades night reaches out to locals GERALDINE TOWN & COUNTRY The restaurant at the Geraldine Town & Country Club is getting busier as locals and out-of-town visitors discover the MENU options, Says club manager Katrina McCabe. Juicy burgers with onion rings and Thai green curry – all made from scratch – are firm favourites. The Maslins on Talbot restaurant reflects the intersection of the two streets where it is located. The restaurant is open Friday and Saturday from 5pm and for lunch on Sundays. Big windows provide a light, bright atmosphere and there is seating for up to 40 people. Sliding doors open into the club hall, which can seat 120 people. The restaurant has a $10 Sunday roast lunch special and gluten-free options are available on request in recognition of the growing need to cater for guests with special dietary requirements. The club’s main bar area has just been
redecorated, and the club is equipped with nine gaming machines, four free, pool tables, dartboards and a sheltered, outdoor-smoking area. A courtesy van is provided to help ensure members get home safely. A “trades night” is coming up in December – it’s an opportunity for local businesses to bring their workers to the club for a night out. Katrina McCabe says it’s a great way for the club to reach out to the local community and to showcase what it has to offer. With Christmas approaching, the club will hold its annual children’s Christmas party with games and prizes galore; the same evening, there will be entertainment for the adults to celebrate with a live band and supper. And, of course, the New Year party is sure to be a hit with a live band to see in 2015. The has 560 members, and continues to grow. New members are charged a $20 joining fee for the first year.

After four years as vice-president, JoAnn Scheres is enjoying her role as the first woman president of the Putaruru District Services Memorial Club. “I am in my third year as president and, even though I had the years before that as vice-president, the role of president was a very big step. You had to prove yourself a bit,” she reflects. She says her style is very hands-on at a dayto-day level; she runs the business side of the club and is catering manager. She’s busy, but says it’s very important to be aware of everything that is happening.” She describes the club as the hub of the township, which gives it its special character. “It’s a great venue. There’s no other facility in this town that can accommodate 400 guests. We often have weddings, birthdays and special events, and recently hosted the Better Business awards. Everything you need for a successful event is here.” Of concern is the fact it is becoming more difficult and more costly to obtain special licences, which she believes could spell disaster for small to medium clubs. “With the new government rules to obtain special licences, it’s becoming prohibitive. It makes everything that much harder.” There are two problems – the cost and the time involved. It is not always possible for clubs to work with the time-frames now demanded by local councils to submit applications. “I’m determined to get the best value I can for the
application fees we have to pay, but I still resent the fact we work so hard to make a profit and then have to part with, at times, quite substantial amounts.” Hosting events creates really important streams of income and brings in new people who wouldn’t necessarily visit the club, she says. “Finding that balance between the club being a members’ club and opening our doors to others is one of the elements I’m very aware of.” JoAnn would like to see Clubs New Zealand take a leadership role on the issue of special licences at a national level, lobbying for an easier, less expensive and more consistent process for member clubs. The Putaruru District Services Memorial Club has 537 members. As with many clubs, the core of members who use the facilities regularly is under 50%. These members are the backbone of the club and their contribution is appreciated, she says. However, many of the less regular members still choose the club as a venue for special events, such as anniversaries. “We host quite a few businesses for Christmas dinners in the build-up to the festive season and regularly host functions for local groups. I’m very aware that community-based groups often don’t have vast sums of money to pay for venue hire and we don’t charge a fee for many. It’s a way we can support the wider community we operate in.” The club is open seven days a week with meals available Wednesday through Saturday. “We’re a friendly, hospitable club doing the best we can in these challenging times. I’m very proud of how hard my staff and the committee work to maintain this.”

Support and sport opportunities turn RSA decision ROTORUA RSA Training schemes for management and staff, gaming-machine and staffing support, and the opportunity to compete in sports events with other clubs lie behind the Rotorua RSA’s decision to join Clubs New Zealand. Manager Cathy Donoghue is looking forward to attending Clubs NZ’s club management conference at the Howick Club at the end of November. The Rotorua RSA was established in 1916 by returned servicemen from World War 1. “We have a very strong service background from World War, World War 2, Korea, Malaya, Borneo, Vietnam, and United Nations peacekeeping missions, but we’re now having to change our focus because we hope we don’t have another big world war,” says Cathy “We’re now more reliant on associate members. We still have a very strong naval association and women’s section, the air force, merchant navy, and Kings Empire Veterans. These clubs are still here but their members are dwindling as well.” She says it has always been a communityminded club, and is now working towards building up its family-friendly aspect over the next 18 months. The Rotorua RSA club is now offering a youth membership. Many locals have taken advantage of this and are enjoying learning how to play snooker,
8 ball, and darts from seasoned players, she says. Local businesses and social groups are also being offered the opportunity to challenge club members to tournaments in snooker, 8 ball, indoor bowls, golf, dance sports, and darts. The club has also increased its on-line presence and has made itself more available through social networks with its own Facebook page and website. One of the major changes this year has been the closure of Robbie’s Restaurant after 13 years; the club took over management of the restaurant on November 5. Cathy Donoghue says managing the restaurant will open up a new line of business for the club at a time when the local drinking population is dwindling, and people prefer to go out for a good meal in a nice atmosphere. “Food is the way a lot of people are going these days. And with the new drink-driving laws reducing the permitted blood-alcohol limit, we as hosts have to be more responsible. We’re encouraging people to use our facility and our van to get home. We’ll be able to be more so with the restaurant on our side.” The club is also managing the catering for functions at the restaurant. It is open for dinner seven nights a week, and lunch six days a week. “We’re also opening on Christmas day for lunch for anyone who wants to have a good Christmas Day, a good meal, and leave all the mess behind,” says Cathy.

Birthday bash recalls birth in baker’s back room
The Tauranga Citizens’ Club (Incorporated)
TAURANGA CITIZENS The Tauranga Citizens Club celebrated its 80th birthday on June 10 this year with a party for members who enjoyed discounted meals, music, a birthday cake, and $2000 worth of giveaways on the night. The idea to form the club was born in a back room of a local bakery by a group of six men. It has resulted in an established facility with more than 5060 members. Len Crew, Artie Stewart, Jack Hill, Harold Hodge, Herb Long and Bert Riggar met regularly after work for sociable libations at a local hostelry before forming the United Sports Club. The club’s aim was to encourage and promote sports as well as liaising and scheduling fixtures on the domain and the adjacent Wharepai field. Membership numbers soon reached 17, with meetings convened in a room inside Woods Bakery next to the recently demolished Masonic Hotel, on The Strand. The six men soon established a more independent base on McLean St in a former cement-storage, tinshed, previously owned by Guinness Brothers. In 1946, the club changed its name to the Tauranga Citizens Club. It then moved to on Elizabeth St where facilities consisted of one large upstairs

Lifelong member Betty Stamp says joining the club 38 years ago is the best thing she ever did. “It has been a safe place where one can go on their own. I had lost touch with all my old friends, but found them all here.” A full house of financial members and their guests joined in the June 10 celebrations at the club. Sense of community the key PORIRUA CLUB When a club is experiencing 10% or so growth in membership each year, it speaks volumes about having the right building blocks in place. Such is the case with the Porirua Club. General manager Lisa Beighton says the key to creating growth has been a shift in philosophy to strive to become the community hub rather than a private members’ club. “Most of my career has been in clubs and I have come to realise just how important a sense of social responsibility is, and the difference clubs make to not only our members, but our community as a whole. “We went through a time when the clubroom was being tagged. Our solution came from becoming ‘louder and prouder’ about being a community facility and giving everyone in our area a sense of ownership – this has led to a big drop in issues.” The stability to nurture growth also comes with low staff turnover – another key ingredient in the club’s happy situation, Lisa says. “Governance and management in the club is very good. We have really clear delineation in terms of interaction with staff. I remember in my earlier days in this industry how difficult it could be when, as a staff member, you were being instructed what to do by members of governance. That doesn’t happen here.” At the heart of this healthy separation is a high level of reporting from management to governance, leaving governance secure and “very much in the boardroom”, setting policy and enabling all the staff to do their jobs. “The board is very good,” says Lisa, “full of sensible people who all have strengths in different areas, and know the ramifications of poor procedures and governance.” She says the club has a high level of community engagement, which resulting in it winning two
the club and, at the same time, giving back to the community. “We had a black-and-white ball because some of our members wanted to get dressed up, and we named Women’s Refuge as the benefactor. It wasn’t a ticketed event as such, but if people wanted to reserve a table there was a charge; members also donated prizes to auction and we raised $1500 that went towards wood and food for two houses.” Lisa, who is responsible for organising the club’s entertainment, says it is “an incredibly supportive environment” – the governance group very much takes the attitude of trying things. She quotes the mechanical bull-riding night as a case in point. Porirua has also hosted the Clubs New Zealand national euchre tournament this year. Organised largely by the Porirua card adjunct, the event was a huge success and showcased how friendly and welcoming the Porirua Club is, says Lisa. With a membership of just under 3000, the club looks set to continue to grow and to continue celebrating being very much a part of its community.

The Porirua Club won both the vibrancy tourism and hospitality award, and mediumbusiness award. Lisa says the club’s success in winning these awards reflect the level of connectedness
it has forged with its community. Joining the local Chamber of Commerce has squarely put the club among the local business fraternity and created a significant networking environment on which to build relationships and business, she adds. The club has also succeeded in finding and implementing ways of bringing more people into

The Ekatahuna Club started as a ‘gentlemen’s club’ in 1906 – the domain of a select few, a place to socialise where no liquor was sold. The district was a dry area with no liquor licences and it was a serious offence to sell liquor. “Ladies’ nights” were held once or twice a year, with men decked out in formal attire and women in ball gowns. Fast track nearly 11 decades and, having had a spell as a workingmen’s club, the Eketahuna Club now has a membership of about 130 men and women. “Women pioneered membership in 1985 and, in fact, the first woman member of the club, Joy Hanson, passed away in November last year, marking another milestone of the club,” says the club’s manager, Elaine Smith. In 1966 the club was granted its first licence at a cost of $10. The following year, renewal of the licence cost $160, something that one member of the club was so gob-smacked about he took the matter to the local member of Parliament, who. despite agreeing the hike in cost was beyond reasonable. did not do anything to change matters.
These days Elaine Smith celebrates the way the small club has found a way to survive. She puts this down to the amazing level of community commitment to wanting to see the club go on for many years to come. “Volunteers man the bar and do firewood for the two fires. The kitchen is also all voluntary, while other members have done painting and electrical work. Being a rural club, we have dairy and sheep farmers as members, and their input into the financial health of the club is enormous through rearing calves each year to bring in another source of income.” Unlike many chartered clubs, the Ekatahuna Club does not have pokie machines. Elaine says some members comment how nice it is to be in a club without them. The annual motor-bike ride is supported by local riders as well as others from the Wairarapa, and Manawatu areas, and the South Taranaki Club. The event has been part of club life for nearly a decade. The 10th Transport army unit, which is based at Linton (near Palmerston North) has been parading in Eketahuna on Anzac Day for the last 23 years. A get-together at the club follows. “We have many members who have shifted away from the area but who maintain their membership,

Elvis will be in the building UPPER HUTT COSSIE Australian comedian Kevin Bloody Wilson and United Kingdom singer Ben Portsmouth – regarded as the world’s number one Elvis performer – are the latest international acts engaged by Upper Hutt Cossie. Wilson’s show will be on Saturday, November 29, while Portsmouth, who will be backed by the Roger Fox Big Band, performs on March 14 next year. “Upper Hutt Cossie will be the only Wellington venue for both of these acts, which gives us the
opportunity to showcase their facilities to the greater Wellington population,” says manager Dean Candy. The club places huge emphasis on its entertainment calendar and many national and international acts have performed in the last few years...The Searchers, Dragon, Mi-Sex, The Feelers, Hello Sailor, Titanium, Blacklistt, and John Rowles, and numerous tribute shows. The club has developed a close relationship with PaperPlus and has been the venue for several book launches; the latest was with Robbie Deans.

Others to have visited the club include Jo Seager, who returns on December 9, Masterchef’s Simon Gault, The Food Truck’s Michael Van De Elzen, and mediums Kevin Cruickshank (over 400 in attendance) and Deb Webber. “Jo Seager loved the venue and has recommended the club to other writers,” says Dean Candy. He wants to engage an international act as the showpiece of the 2016 Clubs New Zealand national conference, which will be hosted and staged at Upper Hutt Cossie,

NZ MASTERS GAMES
The NZ Masters Games will celebrate 25 years of competition when the 2015 edition rolls out in Wanganui from January 30 to February 8. The event, which alternates year by year between Wanganui and Dunedin, is firmly established as “the Masters Games in New Zealand, and certainly not one to be missed”, says Wanganui Events Trust chief executive officer Judy Doyle. The inaugural annual New Zealand Masters Games was held in Wanganui in 1989. The event has grown in scale from 1500 entrants competing across 29 sports to more than 8000 entrants and 67 sports. Next year’s Games will be the biggest yet – nine days, 57 sports, more than 2400 individual events, and a target of 6000 competitors. Many of the Masters Games events are aimed primarily at having fun with mates and making new friends, says Doyle. You don’t need any experience or equipment. You just roll up and it’s there for you. Watch for the “fun” events on the entry forms. The intimacy of the city is a notable aspect of Wanganui as a venue. The NZCT Games Village at Springvale Park is within 10 minutes of the main street, and 42 of the 48 venues are within 10 minutes’ drive of the village. Judy Doyle says the sports venues are top quality and the weather is guaranteed to be perfect. For the first time, a games app is available for the 2015 Games. You can download it to your tablet or phone from the app store or Google play. Registrations are open. Visit the website, find the Games on Facebook or phone for a registration book, and browse the multitude of activities in store.
Masters Games a celebration of life Mike Cronin
Close to 6000 entrants will be competing in 57 sports at next year’s New Zealand Masters Games in Wanganui from January 30 to February 8.
A clever man once said: “My aim in life is to die as young as possible…as late as possible.” This seems to describe the essence of being a “master”. Our bodies may be said to be past their prime and we can no longer expect to be elite or the very best, yet our minds are still as sharp as ever. Our experience of life has also led us to appreciate better what we have and to revel in every moment – to get the most out of life. Maybe, as a “master”, we are truly now at our best. And because we will continue to learn until our last days, it could be argued that the best years are still ahead of us. However, do you recall the freedom of adolescence, the absence of responsibilities, how life was just about you? While growing up has presented us with new challenges and brought responsibilities, we remember – and maybe even sometimes pine for – the carefree days of our youth. In the words of Whitney Houston, “Would you like to have one moment in time where you can be free.”
A clever man once said: My aim in life is to die as young as possible ... as late as possible.
Just for that one day, to recapture that freedom of youth. The Masters presents that moment to feel that way again ... to enjoy a day (or a week) that is just about you. The carefree environment of a fun-filled Masters combined with the wisdom of experience can make these days the best of our lives, when life can be celebrated for what it is.

for unrivalled joy and satisfaction at achieving their goals. The Olympics is a wonderful spectacle for many reasons, but most significantly for the way it brings so many people from so many backgrounds together for the common purpose of sports competition based on peace and harmony. In a humble comparison, the NZ Masters seeks to achieve the same outcomes. By watching or competing at the Olympics, you can share in the buzz of Kiwis taking on the world; by being part of the Masters, you can be part of similar action, and relive the thrill and emotion of Olympic-
style competition by doing it for yourself. Olympic-style competition can contribute to our lives, and lead us to reflect on the heroics and achievements of all those who have competed at this level. We can follow their example and continue the philosophy of peace and respect for others through honest and healthy competition as we put our differences aside to enjoy one another’s company and experience moments that will stay with us for the rest of our lives. Yes, becoming part of the Games can make a difference in your life.

Party planned for half-century Sue Russell Next year will be special for Wanganui’s Castlecliff Club as it celebrates its half-century. Over the weekend of May 23-24, current and past members, employees and guests will have lots of opportunities to socialise and share memories of the club’s history. Castlecliff Club president Peter Gosnell says the celebrations are eagerly looked forward to, and he and his fellow organisers and hosts plan to do everything they can to give the club the birthday it deserves. “We will have a luncheon on the Sunday and an informal get-together starting at 11am on the Saturday. “It’s going to be very nice to catch up with members and employees who all, in their special way, have created the club we have today.” The Castlecliff Club has a membership of 832 across three membership strata. It offers junior membership for students from age 13 and has a special pensioner category as well. The club operates from the original purpose-built clubroom in Tennyson St. “We have always been known as a very friendly club that welcomes visitors. When we get this feedback, it is very gratifying because not every club is like this.” Peter acknowledges that having great staff – some have been with the club for year – really helps cement the culture and the standards it maintains. “Our bar manager, Donna McKinda, has been with us for more than 30 years while club manager Anita Hodgetts has chalked up eight years in the role.” Most days of the week there’s activity happening at the club from the various adjuncts. Monday is indoor bowls day and on Tuesday, the club hosts housie. Wednesday is a rest day from scheduled activity, but there’s plenty on offer on Thursday when darts, cue sports and cards are played. On the same day, there’s a ‘senior get together’ in the afternoon where about 40 club members play bowls and darts. Texas hold’em poker is on the schedule on Friday night. A downstairs bistro bar has just been developed and it offers meals ranging in price from $14 to $25. Though the 50th birthday is still some months away, work is well under way on a special commemorative book the club has commissioned. “The book will give us a wonderful account of the journey of this club,” says Peter. “I’m expecting that many people who attend the club’s anniversary

‘Pursuit of social recreation’ thrives The Papakura Club was formed in 1939 for “the association of gentlemen in the pursuit of social recreation and relaxation”. The club’s first home was upstairs in what was commonly known as the Blue Room, on the corner of Elliot and Great South Road where it operated for nearly 20 years. It was there in 1946 that application was made to become an incorporated society. By the mid-1960s the club had moved to an East St building that was to become the Forge Nightclub; in 1978, Papakura Club Inc built clubrooms at 5 Croskery Rd. Today the club has more than 1000 members, and room for lots more. Membership is $60 a year, $30 for over-60s. The club is open seven days a week 364 days of the year. The Bees Restaurant is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 5pm to 9pm serving Thai and a-la-carte meals. Benefits to club life include an array of activities encouraging members to get involved and enjoy one another’s company. There are 10 sports sections – golf, table tennis, 8 ball, snooker, indoor bowls, outdoor bowls, euchre, darts, fishing, pigeon racing. Texas hold’em poker is held on Monday evenings, and social table tennis on Monday and Friday afternoons, Housie and trivial pursuit are on alternate Tuesday evenings, and mah jong enthusiasts meet on Thursday afternoons. The outdoor bowls section is looking to boost its numbers and is looking for men and women to join its ranks – all skill levels welcome. The annual, two-day Papakura Club Wild Buck jubilee fishing tournament, held on October 31 and November 1, attracts fisherman from all over. There are prizes aplenty and all fish caught are auctioned, with proceeds going to Drury Rotary for distributiion to the local community and Totara Hospice. The Papakura Club books shows for members’ entertainment – Credence Clearwater will be there on December 13 and Rud Stewart on February 27. The club’s New Year’s Eve theme this year is ‘Rock A Round the Clock’ with the Roger & the Ramjets band. Rock’n’roll classes have started on Sunday evenings to encourage and assist members to rock into the new year.

Sunday market a `destination you will want to visit’ Clubs are pretty inventive at getting their locals to come and see what they have to offer. The Onehunga and Districts RSA is hosting a weekly Sunday market (it started on November 2 and will run through to just before Christmas). It’s an occasion for local artists and craftspeople and sellers of artisan food to show their community what they have to offer. The promoters say, “You won’t find any cheap $2 stuff here – this is a destination you will want to visit. If you are after that ‘one off’ gift or simply to take a look at some truly great pieces of work, then this market is the one for you.” There is a range of social activities on offer at the club, including regular music shows. ONEHUNGA & DISTRICTS RSA seems to be something different happening every day of the week. In October, for instance, members could take part in RSA league poker, club poker, housie, trivial pursuits, and a Halloween night. Live music is a regular feature, along with raffles, 500 cards, and line dancing. In November, the big event will be an Elton John and Billy Joel tribute concert, preceded by a smorgasbord dinner in the club’s Orpheus Restaurant. The concert is part of a tour that includes Spain, Las Vegas, Germany, Italy and Egypt.
The Orpheus restaurant is open for lunch and dinner from Thursday to Saturday. The menu shows very reasonable prices, such as scotch fillet and eggs for $16.50, or a chicken burger salad and fries for $10. The kitchen also produces bar snacks. The lounge bar is the centre of much club activity. As with most clubs, you can move from there to play darts, snooker on one of the two tables available, pool on one of the six tables, or place a bet with the TAB. The club has a catered function centre available for family occasions such as twenty-firsts or weddings, or business meetings and seminars. It has its own bar and sound system, and can accommodate 350 people.
Plenty of things to love about RSA: especially at Christmas “What We Love About Auckland“ was the heading of a series of articles that ran in the New Zealand Herald newspaper. For two-thirds of the country’s population the answer may well be, “The fact that we live in Dannevirke (or Westport or Hamilton or somewhere.)” James Pattullo, secretary-manager of the Glen Eden RSA, reckons that’s because they have tried it at the wrong time of the year. “People should come at Christmas time,” he reckons. “It’s certainly the best time to come

GLEN EDEN RSA to Auckland for a holiday. The motorways are deserted.” That might change a few people’s minds. So might the fact the Glen Eden RSA, like many clubs, sees itself as a community facility, and works hard to provide responsible activity and plenty of fun. For clubbies, the fact that there are 56 chartered clubs in the greater Auckland area is further incentive to give the city a bit of a look. Like most RSAs, Glen Eden now has few returned services members, and has had to widen its scope. The club’s outreach into the community includes welfare officers supporting members and their families in need, hospital and retirement home visiting, and transporting members to hospital or doctors’ rooms. The local stroke club uses the RSA clubrooms regularly, and fundraising events are held there for local families who have members needing help with financing the cost of travel overseas for medical
treatment that is not available in New Zealand. Last Easter, the club hosted the Interdominion darts competition, an annual event held alternately in New Zealand and Victoria or New South Wales RSLs. A hundred and twenty Australian competitors were among the 200 taking part from Thursday evening to Easter Monday. Accommodation had been jacked up at Lincoln Green Hotel, and the club and other hired vans ferried people between there and the club. “People really enjoyed it,” says James Pattillo. “They said we were the smallest club that had hosted it, and that they had the best time because they weren’t miles away from one another.” Glen Eden’s fishing adjunct headed to Great Barrier Island at the end of October for an annual competition. Rumour has it that because women members have won for the last two years, they will be put on a boat going somewhere hopeless to givr the blokes get a chance. End-of-year events – such as the bowls club’s dine and dance, the veterans’ lunch, the sports sections’ prizegiving, and of course, the New Year’s Eve party – are being organised.

RSA aims to be club of choice in fast-growing western suburb NEW LYNN RSA As New Lynn rapidly becomes the hub of West Auckland, the New Lynn RSA is seeking to meet the needs of the growing suburb, says club secretary manager Dale Mays. Located in the centre of the action opposite Lynn Mall and the new train station, the New Lynn RSA is well situated to play a big part in the area, including catering to families, he says. “The train station has made a big difference to the RSA with many members taking advantage of the handy transport,” he says. “Millions of dollars are being poured into New Lynn by central and regional government. The hope is that New Lynn will one day rival places like Newmarket as one of the most prestigious town centres in the Auckland region.” To cater better to the young families populating the area, the New Lynn RSA now allows children to enter the bar area as long as they are accompanied by an adult. The RSA also has a ‘snug room’ capable of accommodating around 20 people. This is a separate area within the club, a relaxing place for families to hang out with television, coffee tables, comfy couches and chairs. The RSA is also taking youth memberships, and its junior section can be joined by teenagers 13 years and older. It’s just another way the RSA is hoping to reach out to the next generation, says Dale Mays. The club has a full TAB in a separate room off the sports bar with 11 televisions and self-service pod. Next door is a gaming area with a modern décor. The upmarket New Lynn RSA’s restaurant has capacity to seat 120 people. An outdoor area allows for al fresco dining. A hall, which holds around 300 people, can be hired for functions. The RSA will host The Dreams’ Fleetwood Mac tribute tour on December 13 and there will be a prize for the best dressed Stevie Nicks. On New Year’s Eve D’Starlights will belt out hits to herald in 2015. The train station makes getting to and from the RSA easy, says Dale. The station, the largest New Zealand railway project for several decades, involved a kilometre-long trench being dug through the town centre along the railway corridor allowing trains to pass through the town centre in both directions every 10 minutes without holding up traffic. Mays has certainly seen the flow-on effects of the project already. The club’s membership stands at 2500 – and more than 500 of them have joined in the past year. “It is predicted that there will be 10,000 new residents living in New Lynn in the next five years,” says. “The RSA is modern, but retains the important RSA focus, and we hope to cater to some of these people moving to the area. We aim to be the club of choice in the New Lynn community.”

Action-packed Christmas HOWICK CLUB Two years after a $1.5-million upgrade of its premises, Howick Club is reaping the benefits with an increase in membership, says general manager Phil Saul. “We get some really good feedback about the club. People love the new modern look,” he says. Set in two-hectare grounds, the club offers a country feel set in the midst of the city. The large grounds also allow the club to offer a wide range of activities on site, including a Big Boys’ Toys day (when the club sets up trucks, boats and hot rods), a children’s farm day (with farm animals brought to the site) and a popular fireworks display. The fireworks event has been held for more than 20 years and draws thousands of club members and members of the public to the club. “It’s our way of giving something back to the community as well as letting them know we are here,” says Phil. He says the Howick Club has something for everyone: “In winter you can relax with a drink in front of an open fire in the lounge bar before being spoilt for choice from the a-la-carte menu of our restaurant. In summer, take a glass of wine and nibbles out to the patio and listen to live jazz. “‘Or you can participate in a range of social sports and activities in the sports bar while you watch live sport on one of the many, big-screen TVs around the room.” There’s live entertainment every Friday, and regular Friday-night karaoke sessions are held in the sports bar. You can also enjoy a variety of shows in the function area, which can also be hired by members for special occasions, such as weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, etc.” The club restaurant is capable of seating 240. The Sunday buffet is crammed with people. Themed evenings include French, Italian and Indian cuisine. The gaming area has 18 machines (five recently upgraded), a TAB, darts, snooker and pool tables.
Snow day is a big event for the children (above) at the Howick Club, one of the many club activities that keep the staff busy. An action-packed schedule is planned for the Christmas-New Year period. A children’s Christmas party will involve some large rides (such as roundabouts), food and entertainment, and, of course, a visit from Santa Claus. Phil is expecting thousands at the event. On Christmas Eve the club will hold a family evening of Christmas carols and on New Year’s Eve,
Black Fire will belt out the hits to see in 2015. Phil Saul says club membership is increasing steadily – an average of one new member joining each day. The club does not advertise – all new memberships come by word of mouth. The club’s current membership stands around 4300, drawn mainly from the Howick and Pakuranga areas of Manukau City.
Pop-up café caters for members and travellers A pop-up café is being offered by the Waiuku Cosmopolitan Club every weekend to cater for club members, locals and travellers on the popular Glenbrook Vintage Railway. The café, in the club’s downstairs bar, will flow outside so that customers can enjoy a cuppa, coffee and a bite to eat in the sun if they wish, says club secretary manager Katrina Barnett. It’s a new concept for the club and one she hopes will cater to the needs of the area. “Around 500-600 people travel on the train each weekend and are deposited right outside the club. It made sense to offer them refreshments and we hope they will also see what the club is all about,” says Katrina. She says the train is indicative of the changing face of Waiuku and that the area now has a more upmarket feel. The club’s Shunters Restaurant was renovated in 2012 and serves a variety of dishes from old favourites such as apple crumble to foreign dishes

WAIUKU COSSIE including Thai curry and scallops wrapped in bacon. Thursday night is the $20 carvery buffet, which is always popular, says Katrina. The club provides live entertainment each week, Thursday nights are ever-popular, with local artists performing and a membership draw. Handle Club (where people buy a handle of beer with a tag, and numbers are drawn for prizes during the evening) and karaoke competitions entice members on a Friday night. Recently the club moved its gaming room downstairs, leaving the upstairs area free to be hired out as a function room. A wedding for 300 people has already been held
there and as Shunters Restaurant is also situated upstairs catering is a breeze, says Katrina. The club also has a meeting room for hire. Waiuku Cosmopolitan Club operates a number of sections within the club – euchre, indoor and outdoor bowls, darts, snooker, golf, netball, touch rugby, country music, line dancing, 8 ball, axemens, fishing and punters clubs. December will see the club busy with various sections and members’ Christmas parties. A masquerade party is planned for New Year’s Eve. The club has around 1450 members after a recent membership drive. Katrina Barnett says membership is increasing as more and more people base themselves in Waiuku and commute to Auckland for work.

Table tennis cashes in on the bounce from the robot “Some clubs say they have 10 to 20 per cent of their members using their club on a regular basis. Far more of our members use our club on a regular basis,” says Lynne Smith, secretary manager of Papatoetoe Cosmopolitan Club. “I think that’s why we are so successful. We’ve got a very loyal base. We’re not high in numbers, but we’ve got a high membership usage.” One possible reason for this high usage is the club’s gymnasium. “It’s a great drawcard. It’s very popular. People join the club to use the gym. Young people especially like it. We are looking to expand it. We always have someone on duty at reception, and gym-users sign in there, then sign out when they’ve finished.” Other sports are part of the deal – there are 13 sections. Table tennis is a growing adjunct. After the club hosted the North Island championships at Queen’s Birthday weekend, a table-tennis robot that had been on display was brought to the club for expert or novice players to challenge. It was so popular the table tennis section adjunct is looking at buying one. Section members have also started coaching children aged from five to 13 at the club. Snooker is strong too. Each November Papatoetoe hosts an invitation tournament which draws senior-level players from around the country. Local businesses sponsor a table. A three-day 50-year club jubilee in April was a great event, Lynne says.
PHOTOS Right: All living and financial foundation members of the Papatoetoe Cossie Club were made life members at the 50-year jubilee. Lower left: The lineup of living former presidents at the jubilee.
PAPATOETOE COSSIE “All living and financial foundation members were made life members of the club on the Sunday. There were 18 of them. We had a lovely luncheon – it was a special day for them.” She says the club looks out to its community by making rooms available free for groups, such as Probus and Rotary. Subsidised taxi vouchers are available for members to use so that they can leave their cars at home and come to the club.
There’s a band playing every Saturday night. Lynne says this is a long-held tradition and well patronised by members who like ballroom dancing. Other social events include Melbourne Cup Day with the customary dress-ups, and, for the four Saturdays before Christmas, there will be dine-anddances. These are popular with small businesses , which can book a table or two and be part of a larger social event with other firms. And, guess what? New Year’s Eve is going to be a real knees-up.
It’s a great drawcard. People join the club to use the gym. Young people especially like it.
Constitution changed in the interests of affordability The Bays Club has changed its constitution to offer more affordable membership options. Club manager Dave Hewitson says the aim is to make the club a community-friendly facility accessible by all. “Membership fees have been reduced to $50 per year and associate memberships have been abolished, which means everyone who joins is a full member and has a say in the club. “Other changes allow Gold Card members to automatically qualify for a vet membership, which gives them a full year’s membership for $25.” Set just metres from the ocean, the Bays Club was renovated in September with new paint, carpets and LED lighting giving what Dave describes as a “very contemporary” appearance. The club has a lot to offer, he says. The Tiri View Lounge restaurant opens from Tuesday to Sunday and has specials every day. As an example, every day over-60s can eat an entree, main and dessert for $16.50. Wednesday night is steak night, with $10 rump steaks on offer ,and Thursday night, you can get an entree, main and glass of wine for $22.50. He says the focus of the restaurant is on fresh,
BAYS CLUB New Zealand ingredients and wholesome meals at affordable prices. The club runs its own kitchen, which gives it control over the food that is offered, he says. “We can cater our menu to the tastes of the locals. We can cook what our members want.” Chicken filo pastry, lamb’s fry and bacon and fresh fish are some examples of what’s on the menu. Dave Hewitson says the large outdoor deck is a popular place for members to enjoy a bite to eat or a drink from the restaurant, café or sports bar. The club has a raft of events planned in the leadup to the holiday season – including the annual kids’ Christmas party on December 14 and a concert by New Zealand fiddle player Marian Burns on December 20. There will also be the usual New Year celebrations. Then, on January 24, the club will stage a Rod Stewart tribute show featuring Rud Stewart, who is being billed as Europe’s premier Rod Stewart tribute artist.
Papatoetoe Cosmopolitan Club
Tribute singer Rud Stewart is booked for the Bays Club on January 24. If you want to know if this fellow is the real deal, ask Rachel Hunter, The club has 1700 members and Dave Hewitson says the aim is to increase this by 600. Members are being encouraged to spread the word, and to join a friend and receive a reward voucher. Membership in general is growing as more and more people latch onto the value and realise the
price advantages of belonging to the club, he says. “We’re a lot cheaper than most bars for drinks and we have a stunning facility with great views over the Hauraki Gulf. People are realising that the club is the perfect place to hang out if they want to have a good time for a great price.”

Rewards from restaurant ownership WAIHI BEACH MEMORIAL RSA It has been more than a decade since the Waihi Beach RSA Inc, formerly the Waihi Beach Memorial RSA, moved to its stunning spot high above Waihi Beach. It has flourished in those years. The club’s secretary-manager, Bill Garth, now is in his sixth year overseeing the busy life of the club, says a significant change that has had a positive spin-off for the club is the decision to take over the running the restaurant. “Since taking on employment of the staff at the restaurant, we have increased its profit margins from 8 per cent to 21%,” he says. “That has been huge for the club and has really helped solidify our finances. But, most importantly, we have got complete control of what is served in terms of standard and price.” He has been in the hospitality industry for 40 years and has seen independent contractors come in “all guns blazing” saying how much they are going to make a difference but ending up cutting back on quality and service. “Our Gunners’ View restaurant is extremely busy seven days a week now. We’re expecting to cater for more than 400 meals a night over the Christmas period. In an average week, we would do 1000 meals.” The Waihi Beach RSA has 2500 members and, given that the population of Waihi Beach is 2000, Bill says the club must be doing lots of things right. Of that membership 104 are returned servicemen, 430 belong to the services section and the remaining near-2000 are “club members”. “We’ve just changed our associate member status to ‘club member’ because we feel it is more meaningful,” he says. The club works with five-year development plans
Since taking on employment of the staff at the restaurant, we have increased its profit margins from 8 per cent to 21%.
An annual sports dinner hosted by the Waihi Beach RSA has been a profitable fundraiser for the local rugby club. Dick Tayler has been the host, and guest speakers have included Warren Gatland (above). and Bill is pleased that one of the big boxes – to have a membership of 2500 by 2014 – has been achieved. He’s looking forward to seeing an upgrade of the outdoor furniture and, eventually, the building of a children’s playground. “We have to do all we can to attract families.
Facilities like a playground tell families we care about them enjoying themselves and are prepared to invest in helping this happen.” He doesn’t describe himself as a 9-to-5 manager.: “In this industry you have to work flexible hours. I come and go, and if we’re in for a busy night, I’ll come back later to help out.”
Giving back to the community who so loyally support the club is something he sees as greatly important. The annual sports dinner is a highly successful fundraiser for the local rugby club. For the last two years, it has been hosted by Dick Tayler, with Colin Meads and Warren Gatland as the guest speakers. The Waihi’s Got Talent school competition is in its fourth year. First prize of $1000 goes to the winning school, with the individual winner receiving $250. The club has been nominated for the service business category of the local business awards, and Bill is very proud of this achievement. The progress the club has made is especially satisfying given that he’s decided to hang up his manager’s hat in February. “I’ve seen many goals we set achieved, and the next manager will take the club on from here. For me, I always intended to return to Christchurch and I’m very much looking forward to being back in the South Island.”
World War 1 centenary service attracts large crowd Left: The RSA’s 1014 Anzac of the year, Banapa Avatea, speaks at a special World War 1 centenary service held at the Huntly RSA.
HUNTLY RSA Huntly RSA’s history was researched this year by club member Jean Beverland, who put together a presentation for a service held at the club to celebrate the centenary of the start of World War 1. Huntly RSA secretary/manager Claire Cormack says the service was well attended by more than 100 people. They enjoyed a mix-and-mingle afternoon with some typical World War 1 foods, which were made and brought in by members with recipes from the time. Many stories were shared by people with family members in the war, and posters were on display with the information Jean Beverland gathered about the men from Huntly who died in the war. She also unearthed Huntly RSA dates back to early 1918, when John Porteous, known as Jack, was asked to muster as many returned servicemen as possible to hold an Anzac service. Twenty men turned up to the ceremonial church service at the Presbyterian Church. From this gathering a sub-branch of the Auckland RSA was formed with Jack Porteous as secretary, a position he held for 45 years. The club’s first president was Kenneth Caldwell. By late 1918 there were 80 members and an effort was made to build clubrooms. Five hundred pounds was raised, but it was not quite enough and
HUNTLY RETURNED SERVICES ASSOCIATION 42 William St, Huntly Ph: 07 828 9732 e: huntlyrsa@xtra.co.nz w: www.huntlyrsa.co.nz was invested. By the mid-1920s, there had still been no effort to erect a memorial for the Huntly men who had given their lives during World War 1, so the Huntly RSA decided to use its funds to improve the site in the main street and erect a cenotaph. The RSA continued to be homeless, and in 1944 the club was meeting in the supper room of the Town Hall. By January 1945, it had moved to the old Drill Hall, which, by 1946, was being called the RSA Hall.. The Huntly RSA remains on that site today. By 1949 the club had 423 members and a start had been made on additions.

RUAKURA CAMPUS CLUB
INTERCLUB • VOLUME 20, ISSUE 2 - 2014
Craft beer goes down a treat Sue Russell For David Ross, manager of the Ruakura Campus Club in Hamilton, the reason he chose to apply for the job was very straightforward. “The working environment is the most important thing to me. You are dealing with people who want to join the club to be part of a community project.” The club is run by the members, and it is restricted to members and their guests. The Ruakura Campus Club is within the bounds of the internationally renowned Ruakura Agriculture Research Centre, home to AgResearch, in Hamilton. The club’s membership reflects its location – about two-thirds of them work at Ruakura, at the nearby Innovation Park, or at the University of Waikato, just round the corner. Along with an array of sport and leisure activities, the club caters for the serious and not-so-serious participant alike; with squash, soccer, cricket, tennis, darts, petanque and swimming. The the club also has a reputation for specialising in supplying craft beers from New Zealand and overseas. “We have quite a strong following of craft beerdrinkers in our membership and usually have up to different types of beer on tap all the time,” says David. “This has become a real point of difference and a special part of the club culture we have embraced in recent years.” The club began pouring craft beer through the interest in home-brewing of long-serving member Neil Towers. He recognised there might be a niche market for the club, and it hasn’t looked back. One of the club’s strengths is that it is not tied to contracts with a specific brewery, which means David Ross can buy craft beers from any source locally or overseas. “There has become such a strong interest in the craft beers that I think it has possibly been the saving
of the club,” he says. “On a Friday night, 60% of the total sales would be in craft beer. It’s getting a bit like the wine market where there has always been an interest in tasting. Now the same thing applies to beer.” He acknowledges the situation of the club, serving those working on or near its campus and their families, may well be a factor contributing to the craft-beer success. Members are more likely to be able to afford to buy what’s on offer. “People expect to be paying more for the beer options we offer, but they also tend to be satisfied after having had one or two handles rather than more, which is often the case with the mainstream brews.” He has strong feelings on the question of responsible drinking. He believes there should be recognition and financial incentive given to clubs that deliver a historically safe, licensed environment to their patrons. “If there are a good licensees looking after their patrons properly, then maybe they could get a rebate for the excise duties paid. “I would have thought there would be a way for good performance to be monitored and measured, and some financial recognition flow back to those clubs working responsibly.” Along with his management role, David Ross also runs the club café ‘CC’s’ The café offers a wide selection of food during weekdays and the club’s bar does food on Friday evenings. “It’s always great to see our members use the club for birthdays, weddings and the like,” he says. “It just reinforces how much this club is a special community belonging to its members.”
The Ruakura Campus Club’s facilities include an outdoor area (top), and an array of sporting activities, including tennis (above), squash, soccer, cricket, petanque, swimming and tennis. The club also has also carved out a reputation for supplying a variety of craft beers (below).

Surf not the only thing pumping Sue Russell Raglan Club is a vibrant, forward-looking club nestled in the heart of the small North Island westcoast town. While Raglan’s population settles around 2600 permanent residents, the club has a membership of 1100-plus, boosted by a significant proportion of holiday-makers and bach-owners. This mix of permanent and visiting club members adds to the club’s character. Club manager Chris Lourie says the club is in good heart. Since taking up the role in February he has focused on initiatives to bring further business and life to the club. Most significant has been emphasis on hosting entertainment and events, and the results have been well worth the effort, he says. “To attract bands and for the clubroom to be more user-friendly for events has meant we’ve moved things around a little inside. Not only have we now got a much more professional looking stage area, but the pool, snooker and darts activities are now within easy reach of one another, making it feel a whole lot more social and benefiting the flow.” Significant energy has also been put into the club’s restaurant, which recently reopened with a new name, Left Hand Break, in keeping with the left-hand break surfing phenomenon that Raglan is famous for. A new chef and staff have been employed. “We made the deliberate decision to move away from a contract-type arrangement for catering to employed staff,” says Chris. “There are advantages in this change. For one, we’ve got an ability to expect the standards of food and hospitality we think appropriate from the restaurant are consistently delivered, and for the restaurant staff they feel part of the whole operation.” New to her role as club president, Josie Warren is relishing the challenges that come with leading the club through a time of change. “We are working very hard on creating a culture of positivity because it hasn’t always been that way. When I’m asked about what my main job is, it is that I go about extending invitations to everyone connected with the club to ‘join us’ on that journey.” Key to her role has been developing relationships. “You don’t necessarily have to agree, but it is an important part of my job to gather some understanding of other points of view. I then walk the path where I can take up this information and find common themes and work with them,” Josie says. Raglan Club has an array of activities on offer: 18 pokie machines, a big-screen TV, TAB pod and screens, competition standard dartboards, snooker and pool tables to name a few. The club’s doors are open seven days a week to its members, their guests and members from clubs with reciprocal visiting rights, says Chris.. “We’re very happy also to sign in and welcome non-members who may wish to see just what we have to offer, including a lovely green space with picnic tables at the rear of the club, ideal for barbecues and special gatherings.” You’ll find a warm welcome and for visitors to the town over the busy summer months the club offers the opportunity to rub-shoulders with the locals and maybe find out just where the best fishing spots are..

Clubs discuss merger possibility The 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force Association club in Gisborne may not be your busiest club in the town, but it carries a proud history and has a unique culture. Club manager Bill Allen, who has been in the role for three years, says the club services its community of members well. “We have about 400 members. Housie is very popular at the moment and Sunday is our club’s day for entertainment. All the club’s around the district have their own entertainment day, which works really well; it means we’re not competing against one another.” Darts is another big sport played at the club. The Gisborne Dart Club uses the club’s facilities on Tuesday and Friday evenings. “It’s not unusual to find 12-14 teams competing at these events,” says Bill. Gisborne is an area where a lot of seasonal work takes place. This ebb and flow in the life of the workforce is reflected to a degree in the life of the 2nd
2ND NZEF ASSOCIATION
These are tight times for a NZEF Association itself, something Bill says is part of the culture of the club. “With a segment of our membership is laid off seasonally, it changes how busy we are,” he says. “But it has always been this way and its part of who we are.” Anzac Day sees a fair proportion of the Gisborne community in the club’s premises enjoying the hospitality and one another’s company. The 2nd NZEF Association employs two full-time duty managers and two part-time cleaners, along with Bill who takes care of the office, wages and account management duties. The club has 14 pokie machines. “These are tight times for a lot of clubs and we’re not complaining at all,” says Bill Allen. “We manage to pay our accounts and we own the building, which has a valuation of $1.4 million.
lot of clubs and we’re not complaining at all.
Discussions are starting between the Gisborne RSA, the Gisborne Cosmopolitan Club and the 2nd NZEF about the possibility of merging. Bill Allen says the advice and support received from Clubs New Zealand has been very useful in facilitating discussions and pointing out key issues for the clubs to consider. “That support has been great and, as they have nothing to gain and nothing to hide, they bring an objectivity to the discussions that are helpful. The
trend these days is very much around clubs merging which means there’s a gathering body of experience to draw from.” The sub-committee formed to look at the viability of merging plans to bring matters to the workingplan stage and then take the concept/proposal to their members for consideration. “My attitude to the whole issue is that, in my role as manager of one of the clubs, I would be acting negligently if I did not engage in this question. I would be being remiss in my duties.” Meanwhile, apart from Mondays when the club’s doors are closed, most days a small but loyal core of members will be found inside its walls, enjoying one another’s company and the facilities the club has to offer. The 2nd NZEF Association clubrooms can be found in Palmerston Rd, Gisborne. As a member of Clubs New Zealand, its doors are open to members, their guests, and members of clubs with reciprocal visiting rights.

Key to the growing success of Hastings’ National Services Club is entertainment – and plenty of it – says club manager Shelly McGhie. Since taking up the role over two years ago, she and the entertainment committee have put energy into ringing the changes with a variety of entertainment options for club members. The club is fully booked up with entertainment gigs to the end of the year and, along with this, its function space is sought-after for private events, including weddings. “When our members know there is great quality entertainment to look ahead to, it keeps the whole energy level up in the club,” says Shelly. “Along with that, I’m also keen to make sure that the life of our adjuncts is as vibrant as possible because most of our core members are also members of the adjuncts.” The club’s adjuncts include golf, snooker, indoor and outdoor bowls, pool, darts, and racing pigeons. There’s also a wine club that meets monthly and a punters club. “There seems to always be something happening

There’s plenty on offer at the Taradale Club as this montage shows
Activities, energy galore A glance at The Taradale Club’s website gives viewers a good perspective of how much activity the club has on offer. Manager Tony Leathers, who took over in July 2012, says the vast array of adjuncts and activities sits at the heart of the club. “There is so much on offer at the club. Our members are spoilt for choice,” Tony says. Membership stands at 1800, though more than 40 years ago the original constitution allowed for a maximum of 500 and a waiting list stood for many years. The club opened its doors in 1972 and 20 years later, admitted women as members. Fast-forward another 20 years and more than a third of the members are women. The club’s expansive complex, including the outdoor bowling green, is now valued at more than $2 million. With a big emphasis on community engagement, the club has reciprocal visiting rights with several other clubs in Hawke’s Bay, including the squash club, bowling clubs affiliated to the Hawke’s Bay Bowling Association, and the Napier City Rovers Football Club. The Napier City Country Music Club uses the premises on the second and fourth Sunday of each month from 1pm–4pm for a music session that is popular with members and guests. “We even have an arrangement in place for students from the Eastern Institute of Technology to use our facilities as temporary guests,” says Tony. “It’s an arrangement that works very well.”

There is plenty on offer in terms of entertainment with most weeks booked well into the beginning of 2015, and for members and guests to enjoy the catering facilities. Main courses vary between $11 and top of $20. Tony says the “special lunch options at just $7.50 are excellent value for money”. With more than 15 adjuncts, including bridge, darts, euchre, fishing, golf, housie, and salsa/ social dancing, there is always activity in the club – something that Tony says really keeps the energy up. “I think that’s what a club should be all about. For many of our members, it’s the centre of their social lives, and I know it plays an important role in keeping some of them actively engaged and positive.” The club is open seven days a week, and members from clubs affiliated to Clubs New Zealand and the New Zealand RSA are welcome..

New retail site provides security The Hornby Working Men’s plays a major role in Christchurch’s Hornby area by providing facilities for community and sports groups and local businesses. These facilities are on the doorstep at little or no cost. As well as having a large membership base , the Hornby WMC owns business 2-zoned land that it has developed and leased as part of its investment strategy in retail assets. The club is building a second retail site to complement its 6000-square-metre development that houses The Warehouse and Briscoes, The new project will create 4000sq m of lettable area and around 170 carparks. Before the first sod was turned, the club had leased 94 per cent of the floor space. Tenants will include Bed, Bath & Beyond, Baby Factory, Anytime Fitness, Rebel Sport and Toyworld. This assured, long-term income stream will allow the club to develop and plan strategically.
HORNBY WMC The security provided by the club’s retail assets is being strengthened by a post-earthquake shift of population from the eastern side of Christchurch to the west. This has seen the Hornby WMC catchment swell as areas such as Wigram, Halswell, Prebbleton, Templeton, West Melton and Rolleston have seen significant population growth. When the dust settles on new retail development, the club will look within its own four walls for its next investment opportunity. It will need to ensure it can accommodate what appears to be continued membership growth and ever-increasing demand on bar, dining, meeting and sporting facilities. The club always welcomes new members, affiliates and their accompanied visitors.
The Cashmere Club will celebrate its 40th anniversary on Saturday, April 25 with a dinner, live band and guest speakers.

Challenge to encourage younger set From page 28 at the club,” she says. “Line dancing has become popular and the Hawke’s Bay Jazz Club is here every Thursday night.” Plans are in place to give the kitchen/dining room area a full redecoration, something Shelly says will really make a difference to the atmosphere inside. “That’s a challenge we’re working with at the moment – to encourage younger people to come through our doors and see what we have to offer. We’re also ‘home-base’ for a lot of tradespeople.” Minimum age to join the club is 18, however over-16s are welcome to become part of the club by joining an adjunct, which Shelly says is a great way to bring the next generation in. “By joining the club as a junior member through connection with an adjunct, the young ones meet the
real core of the club and learn about our standards and our culture in a way that is a good grounding for them.” In total, the club employs 15 full-time and parttime staff. Shelly says the only job she hasn’t done is the cooking. “We employ our own kitchen staff, and our meals are very good quality. Our $10 specials are really popular and there’s plenty of variety.” With the club’s annual meeting approaching in November, she reflects that it has been a good year. She is proud to acknowledge the club’s first woman life member, Melva Malkin, who died this year. Melva was one of the first woman to join the club and was an active member, including some years on the committee. The club doors are open from 11am to late on Sunday and Monday, and from 10am to late Tuesday to Saturday.
