Celebrating the Signature difference By Jo Bailey Building a new home should be a fun experience, and as stress-free as possible, says Rhys Gould, who with his brother Mike, owns Signature Homes Canterbury. “With the right people working alongside you, the building process should be an enjoyable and rewarding experience. Good as Gould - brothers share passion for industry By Jo Bailey Brothers Rhys and Mike Gould bring broad experience in the construction sector to their ownership of Signature Homes Canterbury. “My background is in the commercial and volume end of the construction market,” says Rhys. “Whereas Mike is a registered electrician.” “We believe our complementary skill set is a key strength of the business.” Prior to taking on Signature Homes Canterbury, Rhys worked in the civil engineering and construction sectors for over 20 years. He has held senior management roles in finance, information technology and telecommunications, operational management, project management, mergers and acquisitions; and worked for a number of major Australasian companies including Fulton Hogan and Downer. He is also a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) through the International Project Management Institute (PMI), an Associate Fellow of the NZ Institute of Management, and an ACA with the NZ Institute of Chartered Accountants. Mike is a registered electrician who has worked in the construction sector for over 23 years, including several years as the owner of a
prominent residential building franchise in the North Island. “Mike knows the residential building industry intimately and was fully versed on the benefits of being part of a group home network in terms of access to great design, economies of scale, buying power and well-proven systems, that assist in the delivery of great homes to clients.” Both are directors in the business, with Rhys taking on more of the general manager’s functions as well as overseeing sales and project delivery. Mike manages earthquake repair scopes and oversees the design and drafting side of the business as well as estimating functions for repairs and new builds. The brothers are well-supported by a “great team” with the skills and competency to deliver a top quality product and stand by it. Company helping Canterbury to rebuild By Jo Bailey Signature Homes Canterbury is one of the few group home building companies in the region to get involved in large-scale earthquake repair works. The company’s earthquake repair division is run separately from its new home building operation, but still under the Signature umbrella. It has already completed numerous major repairs over $100,000 and has built relationships with all the major insurance companies. “In the early days following the disaster we did a lot of urgent repair work and carried out 500 scopes on damaged homes for a major insurance company,” says director Mike Gould. “By the end of this process we were pretty well versed on what was required at the front end of earthquake repair works.” Signature Homes Canterbury is also working with IAG, Southern Response, Vero and Tower on total rebuilds of replacement homes. The company has dedicated a team of professionals for its quake-repair works who first assess and gain necessary rebuild approvals, then progress and manage the building works. ”A key person in this division is Kathryn Mitchell, who deals directly with home owners and prepares and coordinates all the documentation, pricing and scope of works. She also assists with gaining building consents, then preparing for works to begin on site.” Kathryn says it is “very satisfying” for the company to help return people to healthier, warmer homes. “In some cases people can combine their repairs with renovations or re-modelling work to give their 50- or 60-year-old home a modern update.” On-site health and safety is a major focus for Signature Homes Canterbury, given the more complex and sometimes dangerous nature of deconstruction, rebuild and repair projects, says Mike. “All of our staff and any sub-contractors we use are Site Safe qualified. “The whole landscape for health and safety has changed and it has become a more costly process. However we welcome the changes and take the safety of our people and clients very seriously.”
Signature Homes Canterbury has a dedicated team of professionals to handle all facets of its quake-repair works. Although repair and rebuild work is not what Signature Homes is traditionally known for, Mike says it has enabled the company to expand and develop its building skills and expertise. “It has also given us a different perspective of dealing with clients and the issues they face which makes us a better all-round builder,” says Gould. Longer term, he expects some of the company’s repair work to flow into more new home projects. “The company has grown on the back of a lot of this insurance work, which has enabled us to take on staff and establish relationships with suppliers and sub-contractors. “With our new home building operation now firmly established and growing, we look forward to continuing the relationships that we have developed with clients on the repair side of the business so that they will hopefully choose us when they build their next new home”
Knock Down and Rebuild Signature Homes’ Knock Down + Rebuild service is aimed at making the process of removing or demolishing an existing house and rebuilding a new one on the site a far less daunting prospect for homeowners. “This service is a good option for people who have a great section but an old home that has passed its use-by-date,” says Rhys Gould. “They could knock down the old one and build the house of their dreams, or even build two, rent one and live in the other, or sell one or both. The possibilities are endless,” says Gould. He says the Signature team works closely with clients to outline what is
involved in the process including permits and costs. They then manage the project for clients and guide them every step of the way. “This service is well suited to earthquake-damaged homes and is ideal for people who love their current location, but whose older home no longer meets their needs.”
