New Aquarium in Main Office: Recently, the Cactus Jack Foundation made a $1000 donation to CLMS to purchase a fish tank for students in our Explorers and Support Center program to maintain. Their donation was featured in a New London Day article, and as a result, Mr. Don MacKenzie of Boats, Inc in Niantic offset that donation by offering us an entire 65 gallon, bow-front, fully operational aquarium, WITH FISH! Last week, Mr. Sachs, along with several students, went to Boats, Inc to help disassemble and move the aquarium. Staff at Boats, Inc. came back with us to CLMS to help reassemble the aquarium here. Lillian Peccerillo, an Avery Point student studying marine biology, along with a friend, served as advisors that day to make sure we were successful moving the fish. In addition, Lillian has offered to volunteer her time to come in to CLMS each month to talk with our students about all things related to our aquarium and marine biology in general. THANK YOU Cactus Jack Foundation, Don MacKenzie of Boats, Inc, and Lillian Peccerillo of UCONN, Avery Point for your support of CLMS!

7th grade students on the Osprey team just completed a unit on comparative government in world geography classes. Students had the ability to experience four types (dictatorship, democracy, anarchy, and monarchy)of government by participating in a three day government roleplay. In each class students were randomly selected to take on the roles of dictator and monarch. Additionally, all students had the opportunity to participate in the chaos that ensued while in a state of anarchy. As a part of the democracy roleplay, students created their own ideas of what the ideal government would be like. Students had the opportunity to prepare a speech/campaign and deliver a speech to their classmates. Following the democratic process, students voted for their new leader. The following students earned the support of their classmates in the election: Nathan Murphy, Cole Gaynor, Cameron Hill, and Connor Motzko and Logan Anderson his running mate. Congratulations to all of the students who participated.

Dear Parents/Guardians, During the week of February 25th, your child will be taking part in Say Something Week at Clark Lane Middle School. We will be discussing how to recognize warning signs, signals and threats of potential violence and the importance of taking action by telling a trusted adult. As a parent/guardian, we know it can be hard to know how your child is feeling. Today, many teens and adolescents turn to print, video and online channels to express themselves – their thoughts and hopes, but also their anxieties and personal feelings. Some even go as far as hinting at hurting them self or someone else. Their friends and peers - the eyes and ears of a school and community - may see these communications, but may not always understand what they are seeing or know what to do with that information. Say Something teaches all of this. 6th grade students will view a presentation from Sandy Hook Promise on Monday, February 25th. Additionally, all students will participate in an activity and discussion during Wingman Wednesday that reinforces the message of Say Something. I encourage you to talk to your child about Say Something and share what they have learned. Not only will this conversation help you learn to recognize any signs in your own child’s expressions, but it demonstrates to them that you also take this subject seriously and can be one of the trusted adults your child turns to if they suspect someone may need help. We know that schools are extremely safe places and Say Something will help keep our young people and community safe. For more information on Say Something, please visit: http://www.sandyhookpromise.org. Thank you, CLMS School Counselors

Clark Lane Connects! Coral Team students wrapped up the poetry unit with an artistic culminating activity- Blackout Poetry. Students chose a poem, scanned the words for a meaningful message contained with the text, highlighted those anchor words, blacked out remaining words and phrases to create a new poem within a poem! Great job!

PHYSICAL EDUCATION & health DEPARTMENT NEWS 7th grade Health students have begun their last unit of the trimester: drug abuse and prevention. This week, students explored the dangerous effects of alcohol on the adolescent brain, as well as what happens when a person is intoxicated. Next week they will continue to learn about the other gateway drugs: tobacco and related products (cigarettes & ecigarettes/juuls), prescription medication misuse and abuse, and marijuana). 8th grade Wellness students have started their final research projects, each relating to a particular drug of abuse. Students have spent two classes researching the details and dangers of their chosen drug, and will continue next week by creating a project to display their knowledge. Students can choose from a research paper, a PowerPoint presentation, an interactive game, or an expert video. They will present their projects next Thursday and Friday. The Physical Education department has been working hard at preparing our students for the CT Physical Fitness Assessment this spring (April). Since January, students perform various muscular endurance exercises, posted around the field house and gym. Cardiovascular endurance activities, such as the PACER, were performed daily in class. February brought us “Healthy Heart Awareness “month. Activities engaging students in all the components of Health Fitness were the focus. Practice testing on the push up and curl up tests were included as a part of our daily lessons. Fitness activities – including dance, yoga, basketball and volleyball – were offered before school all week.

In addition, we completed an exciting month of Badminton play, with recreational game options (single, doubles, “King of the Court” and “Alligator” games, as well as a competitive doubles tournament. Game rules were stressed, as well as etiquette, team play and sportsmanship! On Thursday and Friday, 7th and 8th grade P.E. students participated in the National Youth Risk Behavior Survey, an anonymous survey developed by the CDC which monitors six categories of health-related behaviors that contribute to the leading causes of death and disability among youth and adults, including—  Behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and  Alcohol and other drug use violence  Tobacco use  Sexual behaviors related to unintended pregnancy and  Unhealthy dietary behaviors sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV  Inadequate physical activity infection Next up: Volleyball! Stay tuned & Stay Fit!!! The Wellness team

We will be putting together a short survey to see if a 6:00 start time for concerts would appeal to people. Thanks so much to the sixth grade parents for making a switch to the earlier time on short notice!
